Book recommendations: retellings part 1
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love a good retelling. So much so that I had to split the retelling section in two, possibly three parts or there'd be too many books to fit into a picture properly. I love getting creative with old and familiar stories, while other books retell stories I wasn't that familiar with at all.
I'm starting with Six Crimson Cranes and the Dragon's Promise
The first book is an East Asian inspired retelling of the swan princess, I'm not sure if the second book is a retelling of anything. If you don't know the swan princess, the basic premise is that the evil stepmother sorceress turns the princess' brothers into swans and she has to find a way to undo the curse.
The series follows Shiori, the princess and youngest child of the emperor. In Kiata, magic is locked away and forbidden, but Shiori was born with magic and had to keep is hidden away. At the day of her betrothal ceremony, she loses control and catches the attention of her stepmother Raikama, who uses her own dark magic to turn her brothers into cranes and curses Shiori so that when she speaks one of her brothers will die. Voiceless and alone, she has to find her brothers and undo the curse.
These books really feel and read like a fairytale, and while I am not super familiar with the swan princess I like how elements of the fairytale are woven into the book. Pun intended, because weaving a net is a big part in both the book and the original fairytale. My favorite part is Raikama, the stepmother, and villain of the first book. She's a very complex character and I loved learning more about her and why she cursed Shiori and her brothers.
The editions I have of this book are absolutely gorgeous, and I believe they're the UK edition hardcovers. I'm not sure if people in North America will be able to find these editions, and the US edition has a different cover.
Next up is the Girl who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh
This is a retelling of a Korean fairytale that I'm not familiar with, and the story itself reads like a fairtale very similar to Six Crimson Cranes. I'd say if you like this one, you'll like Six Crimson Cranes and vice versa.
Mina comes from a land plagued by deadly storms and the people believe the sea god, who was once their protector, has turned against them. Every year they choose a girl who is thrown into the sea in the hope that she turns out to be the sea god's true bride and will appease him. This year, Mina's brother's girlfriend is chosen to be the sacrifice and her brother goes after her to save her, which could result in his death. So Mina jumps into the sea instead, sacrificing herself. She finds herself in the spirit world, the world of gods, a place where a mortal like her can't survive long. There, she finds out the sea god is sleeping, and the storms won't end until he wakes. But not everyone wants the sea god to wake up, and they will do anything to stop Mina.
I think one of the best aspects of this book is the slowly developed dislike to romance with Mina's love interest, who is not the obvious choice here, and I love the mystery behind what happened to the sea god and the eventual explanation.
Like with Six Crimson Cranes, the edition shown on the picture is a UK edition with a different cover from the US one.
So this is Ever After counts as a retelling of King Arthur, but it is really more of a rom com in a medieval fantasy setting.
The story takes place after the main quest where Alek pulls a magic sword from a stone (which did not come pre sharpened) with which he beheaded the evil sorcerer king (rather clumsily).
To make sure another evil ruler doesn't take over while they go rescue the princess, Alek temporarily assumes the crown at his mage best friend Matt's advice. Only it turns out the princess is already dead and Alek is stuck as king now.
Worse, there is no way to undo his coronation and if he doesn't get married before his next birthday he'll fade away. Alek doesn't want to marry just anyone, and since he has a little time left, he decides to test potential romantic connections to all this quest companions with Matt's help using common romance tropes he finds in the dead princess' diary. But it turns out love might have been right in front of him all along.
This book is hilarious and pokes fun at lots of common rom com tropes as well as fantasy tropes. The land is called "the land of Ere in the realm of Chickpea". Alek and Matt are both so clueless about each other's feelings, it is funny but at times also frustrating, and they try the most ridiculous things to see if they can pair him up with one of their other companions. If you dislike miscommunication or main characters being dumbasses, you probably won't like this book. There's a fun secondary cast, and their companions all fit pretty much into classic dnd classes such as the rogue, the bard etc
Also by this author: In Deeper Waters, a little mermaid retelling that I'll cover in retelling part 2
Last but certainly not least is Malice by Heather Walter
Now, for most of the books I rewrite the summary in my own words with what I think are the most important things to mention, but the official synopsis of the first book is so brilliant and I could never outdo that, so the next part is copy pasted from Goodreads.
Once upon a time, there was a wicked fairy who, in an act of vengeance, cursed a line of princesses to die. A curse that could only be broken by true love’s kiss.
You’ve heard this before, haven’t you? The handsome prince. The happily-ever-after.
Utter nonsense.
Let me tell you, no one in Briar actually cares about what happens to its princesses. Not the way they care about their jewels and elaborate parties and charm-granting elixirs. I thought I didn’t care, either.
Until I met her.
Princess Aurora. The last heir to Briar’s throne. Kind. Gracious. The future queen her realm needs. One who isn’t bothered that I am Alyce, the Dark Grace, abhorred and feared for the mysterious dark magic that runs in my veins. Humiliated and shamed by the same nobles who pay me to bottle hexes and then brand me a monster. Aurora says I should be proud of my gifts. That she . . . cares for me. Even though it was a power like mine that was responsible for her curse.
But with less than a year until that curse will kill her, any future I might see with Aurora is swiftly disintegrating—and she can’t stand to kiss yet another insipid prince. I want to help her. If my power began her curse, perhaps it’s what can lift it. Perhaps, together, we could forge a new world.
Nonsense again.
Because we all know how this story ends, don’t we? Aurora is the beautiful princess. And I—
I am the villain.
This in an adult fantasy duology, and retelling of Sleeping Beauty told from the perspective of a character based on Maleficent. Alyce is not the one who cast the curse on Aurora, but she does have similar powers to the original vila who placed the curse. The way the curse works is all women descended from the original queen of Briar are cursed and will die without their true love's kiss. Cursed women also only have daughters. To make sure this doesn't spread to too many descendants, only the Queen is allowed to have children and other female relatives are not. Some survive the curse by kissing the right person on time, some die. Aurora's mother survived, but true love's kiss doesn't guarantee a good partner or relationship. Aurora's two older sisters both died, and Aurora doesn't have long left. Because of this, she's forced to kiss random men pretty much every day.
The fairies from the original fairytale are graces here, women blessed with minor magical powers to enhance beauty, intelligence, creativity and such, but they are bound by strict laws telling them they have to use their power for the people, they cannot move to a different country, etc. Alyce is the dark grace, her powers don't really work the same but she makes elixers to, but to harm people, at the request of rich people. I found it really interesting how the culture built around graces lead to people being extremely vain and superficial. Alyce was an easy to root for villain, and I love her dynamic with Aurora, especially how it develops in book 2, which I won't say too much about yet because spoilers.

Let’s Switch Things Up And Talk About Love
I have been single for the past four years because I’m simultaneously a hopeless romantic and a complete and utter train wreck. I love love but I just can’t seem to make it last. I either attract obsessive weirdos or avoidant assholes. At this point, the idea of going on a date fills me with dread. And when a man flirts with me, I get the strangest urge to run away screaming “stranger…

Books that I’ve read recently and would recommend. 🖤 Part 2
A Dowry of Blood by S. T. Gibson. A reimagining of Dracula’s brides, written in letters to Dracula from his first wife, Constanta. I love anything vampire-related and can’t even describe how much I loved this book.
A God in the Shed by J. -F. Dubeau. A fantastic horror novel set in a messed up little town. A murder investigation, a serial killer, a god trapped in a shed (literally), the occult, ancient evils, blood and gore, and lots of twists and turns.
The Poppy War by R. F. Kuang. A historical/grimdark fantasy novel heavily inspired by the Second Sino-Japanese war. Very violent and graphic, but an amazing read.
My Best Friend’s Exorcism by Grady Hendrix. A fun 80s demon possession story set during the satanic panic. A teen girl drops acid, gets lost in the woods, and accidentally gets possessed by a demon — and it’s up to her friend to save her. Gorey and campy.
Maggie’s Grave by David Sodergren. A pregnant woman, falsely accused of being a witch and brutally murdered, takes revenge on a Scottish town centuries later. Fun, fast-paced folk horror meets splatterpunk with an endless amount of gore.
The Island by Adrian McKinty. A tense, fast-paced thriller set in in an island off of the coast of Australia. This book genuinely stressed me out and made me want to bite my nails, but I couldn’t put it down. A bit of Wolf Creek vibes.
Delicious Monsters by Liselle Sambury. A ghost story and psychological horror with dual timelines. Family drama, a haunted house, toxic parents, etc.
Never Lie by Freida McFadden. A psychological thriller with a great twist. When their realtor doesn’t show up, newlyweds take shelter from a blizzard in a manor that belongs to a missing psychiatrist.
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. This book and the world within it makes my heart flutter. A dreamy, whimsical fairy tale blended with East Asian folklore.
The Overnight Guest by Heather Gudenkauf. An atmospheric mystery/thriller. A writer travels to an isolated farmhouse where two unsolved murders and the disappearance of a girl took place decades earlier, and plans to finish her book while snowed in. Things go down hill after she finds a young child outside and decides to bring him in from the cold.
Clytemnestra by Costanza Casati. A retelling of Greek mythology, and such a beautiful and heartbreaking book.
A Day of Fallen Night by Samantha Shannon. A a high fantasy novel and standalone prequel to The Priory of the Orange Tree. Amazing world building, amazing writing, amazing characters, and dragons.
Ring by Koji Suzuki. I’ve always loved the films, both Ringu and The Ring, but I’ve never read the book until now and I highly recommend it if you haven’t either.

1 of the more annoying things about online fandom culture is the tendency for people to describe their enjoyment of characters who have done heinous things with phrasing like "i am a [character] defender" or "[character] did nothing wrong" regardless of whether they would genuinely defend that character. its okay to love and be fascinated by an imaginary guy who you'd never defend. that said i'm a heather lim defender

Best & Worst Series 2023
I saw a booktuber do a video of these questions and I really liked them, so thought that I could answer them here! Credit goes to bookslikewhoa & thoughtsontomes on youtube. Feel free repost and add your own answers!
My post from last year
In total I read roughly 32 series in some shape or form:
I read and completed 12 series this year (meaning I read books 1-- end)
I finished/wrapped up 2 series this year
I started 11 series
I caught up with 2 series
I continued with 0 series
I DNF'ed 7 series
1.What is the best series that you caught up with this year that is still a work in progress? Legendborn by Tracey Deonn for sure. I read books 1 and 2 this spring and it's a new favorite. Also the Wayward Children series deserves to be on here, because I finally caught up with the books back in Jan/Feb.
2. What is the best completed series that you are still catching up with? Technically I'm reading the Damar books by Robin McKinley. I read book 1 a few days ago and I'm currently reading book 2, so I guess I'm catching up on it.
3.What was your favorite first book in a series this year? Favorite was Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett, but I also really enjoyed A Declaration of the Rights of Magicians by HG Parry and The Fifth Season by NK Jeminson too.
4.What is a first book in a series you read this year that you think should have been a standalone, not a series? Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim. I enjoyed this book quite a bit, but I think it should have been a standalone. I did not read the sequel, nor do I plan to.
5.What is your most over-hyped series of the year? The Poppy War by RF Kuang 😬. I generally liked it, but by no means thought it was worthy of the hype it got. Same with Empire of Sand.
6.What is a series that you DNFed this year? A bunch: Empire of Sand, The Last Binding, Six Crimson Cranes, The Isles of the Gods, Fourth Wing, The Mimicking of Known Successes, The Cemetery of Forgotten Books.
7.What was your favorite series finale of the year? The finale to The Expanse series, Levithan Falls. A very satisfactory and good conclusion.
8.What was the biggest cliffhanger you had in a series this year? Probably the ending of The Stolen Heir by Holly Black.
9.What is your most anticipated next book in a series that you read this year that will come out next year? Again, Emily Wilde- with the second book coming out Jan 2024.
10.What is your most anticipated series to catch up on with? The third Crescent City book by SJM. This is shaping up to be my favorite sjm series so far.
11.What was your favorite series that you finished this year? I had so much fun with the Age of Darkness series by Katy Rose Pool that I just have to include this one. It's maybe not the best ever, but I really enjoyed it. Also the Broken Earth series by NK Jemison.
12. What is the most surprising series you liked this year? I decided to give the Mistborn Era 2 a try, and I ended up enjoying it. It was a good audiobook to listen to during my drive into work, and I'm glad I read another Sanderson series.
13.What is a series you finally bailed on after holding onto it for a long time? None.
14.What is the series you meant to catch up with or finish this year that you didn't? Possibly the Veronica Speedwell books, but I haven't read one of those in a few years now, so it might just be a dnf 🤷‍♀️
15.What is a series you finished or caught up with this year that you think is greater than the sum of its parts? I reread the Heroes of Olympus series on audio and while there are certain books/scenes I like from the series, I would consider it overall greater than the sum of its parts.
If you're still here and reading, then here are all the series I read this year. This is obviously more for my record keeping than anything else!
The Shadow of the Wind (The Cemetery of Forgotten Books) by Carlos Ruiz Zafon. Not planning on continuing any time soon.
Wayward Children series by Seanan McGuire. Read books 4-7 on audio. (caught up)
Ninth House (reread) + Hell Bent by Lehigh Bardugo (caught up)
Emily Wilde's Encyclopedia of Faeries by Heather Fawcett (new series)
The Folk of the Air trilogy by Holly Black (reread on audio)
Kingsbridge books 2 , 3 & 0 by Ken Follett
The Stolen Heir by Holly Black (new series)
A Day of Fallen Night by Samatha Shannon
The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi by Shannon Chakraborty (new series)
The Expanse 7, 8 & 9 by James SA Corey (completed series)
Legendborn & Bloodmarked by Tracey Deonn (caught up)
The Heroes of Olympus series by Rick Riordian (reread on audio)
A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske (series dnf)
The Mimicking of Known Successes Malka Ann Older (dnf on audio)
Empire of Sand by Tasha Suri (series dnf)
Age of Darkness trilogy by Katy Rose Pool (completed)
The Poppy War trilogy by RF Kuang (completed)
Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim (series dnf)
The Shadow Histories by HG Parry (completed)
The Isles of the Gods by Amie Kaufman (series dnf)
Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros (series dnf?)
Skyhunter & Steelstriker by Marie Lu (complete)
The Broken Earth trilogy by NK Jemison (complete)
Shades of Magic trilogy by VE Schwab (reread on audio)
The Chalice of the Gods by Rick Riordian
The Fragile Threads of Power by VE Schwab (series start)
Mistborn era 2 by Brandon Sanderson (complete on audio)
Murtagh by Christopher Paolini (inheritance spinoff?) (series start)
A Strange and Stubborn Endurance (reread) & All the Hidden Paths by Foz Meadows (complete or caught up?)
Howl's Moving Castle trilogy by Diana Wynne Jones (partial reread)
Damar by Robin McKinley (complete)
The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper (reread on BBC radio version)

Escape Room Headcanons (I WILL BECOME THE CEO OF THIS FANDOMS HEADCANONS)
1.) THESE TWO ARE LONG LOST BROTHERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
You can't tell me otherwise. Also, since I'm the #1 Game Addict Dad lover, I've given him a name. (His name is Sung-Min Keng. Because I said so.)
2.) Sung-Min and Sujeong worked together before the altar of majority. I just. Love this concept. I also am in love with them both so it only makes sense I would make this headcanon </ 3
//SPOILERS
[I would also like to think that Sujeong and Chunsam became friends after they got out. Bonding over knowing the same dead guy, y'know? Maybe Sua could get involved in this friendship. They all just need severe comfort.]
3.) Sean has ADHD. While he definitely has something along the lines of antisocial personality disorder, I love projecting onto this man as well. Therefore, ADHD-haver Sean.
4.) Sean is trans, biromantic and demisexual. It just makes sense to me. Along with that, Heather is bisexual, male-pref. I don't make the rules, she's a girlkisser of sorts. They're the strongest bi pairing I've seen in a while 💪💪
5.) While its clearly obvious Sean overreacts to someone trying to be friends with him, he is probably also touch-sensitive. Like. He refuses to let others touch him unless if he initiates it. Yes I'm projecting again. ALSO, along with that, he has a tendency to get attached to really specific objects. He's sentimental as FUCK for the most random things. Like that metal rod from seasons one and two. Prime example!!
Hope y'all like this, I'm trying something new. 💪💪 read escape room on webtoon if you like puzzle-based thrillers!!!!! best shit ive read in forever

I follow and ADMIRE DA:NCE Awareness. They are the campaigning arm of Mary Bawden’s dance ministry, Soul to Sole Choreography.
The guest blog post by Heather Harrington, a New Jersey dance professor, intrigued me greatly. She wrote:
“I would have put myself in a better position if I had just worn red lipstick,” explains Kayleen Babel, who gives advice for trying out for college dance teams on her YouTube channel. She later explains that make-up and hair are part of your appearance score, and that you should try to look like the members of the current dance team. You want to blend in, not stand out as an individual. If a male basketball team required an appearance score based on hairstyle and make-up, sprinkled with a warm smile, what would people think?
Aesthetic sports and activities including dance, cheer, ice skating, synchronized swimming, and gymnastics (including rhythmic) rely on some degree of subjective judgments, with some of those judgments scoring appearance. How one looks becomes just as important or more important than what one does.
And those lines are texts are real wham lines:
As competition dance continues to grow in popularity in the US, it’s mostly female participants seek out college dance or cheer teams where they will find similar routines in movement vocabulary, choreography, and performance quality. Members of a college dance team can continue competing at Universal Dance Association (UDA), United Spirit Association (USA), and the National Cheerleaders Association (NCA). The routines for the dance teams can vary from pumping hip-hop dances, jazz, high kick, lyrical, to more cheer-oriented movements with pompoms (read: pom routines).
Young people are exposed to the college dance teams through clips shown on social media, and promotions for training clinics geared towards middle school and high school students. Being on one of these teams can be exhilarating—you move as a unit which can create a sense of camaraderie, belonging, an identity, and new friends. And, you are seen.
However, when people are moving and dressing the same, a pressure develops to not stand out— one must appear and move like everyone else. Here the disciplinarian actions come into play; weigh this amount, wear your make-up, hair, nails this way, pluck your eyebrows, smile, gesture this way, wear this costume and fit into it. Any discipline that is defined as an aesthetic sport invites surveillance of appearance. When a person is judged on their appearance, the potentiality for body control and abuse increases. Adults are playing with a vulnerable growing ego in children and young adults; they want to be accepted and wanted. Rejection is hard and the fragile ego in an activity that honors conformity and uniformity is acutely aware that any misstep away from the norm can mean dismissal. When one’s individuality is not honored or respected, a person feels a danger of being replaced. Personhood is hard to achieve with objectification, but feeling like a product is easy.
Pause and reread the text again:

This article unlocks several core memories, especially the University of Washington poster for the tryouts for their 2016-2017 cheer and dance teams.
The poster required girls to get tanned; look like a typical fitspo model (ripped abs and slender limbs); wear solid black sports bras; mid-rise shorts in said solid color; and a vague “girl-about-town” lipstick shade worn on lips, to name but some.
As a combo dancer in my early youth and a dance fan, I’m all for precision in choreography in group dances. I’m also all for form-fitting dancewear. But the UW poster highlighted the “wear your make-up, hair, nails this way” disciplinarian actions that fuel the body control.
And not to mention the “wear your skin this way” rules for tryouts. This is a barrier to some Filipino prospective cheerleaders and dancers, as they might have elders who constantly would admonish them to whiten their complexions or keep them pale.
“One of the first things that comes mind is objectification and idealization of Western beauty, which are values I would like to believe the University doesn't want to perpetuate," Jazmin Perez said, “As a student of color who looks nothing like the student in the poster, this feels very exclusive.”
Ginang Harrington highlights the lessons learned from the UW cheer and dance tryout poster fiasco from 2016:
Aesthetic sports and activities should not end, but the people who participate in them should resist exploitation and objectification by respecting their personhood— they do, not just appear. Each person is an individual, not part of a monolithic whole. Personality can be encouraged by parents, teachers, coaches, and judges so that a participant learns to see her self-worth and pushes back against people who want to take it away. These dancers will not be on the sidelines, but instead center. They will have power, agency and ownership of their bodies.
And that serves a lesson for parents. If your children wish to join a dance team, read and reread the tryout/audition packets and forms CAREFULLY. Do the coaches require dancers to don volumized hair, false lashes, and lipstick in “girl-about-town hues” alongside them executing clean pas de kiltses (turning C jumps), grandes jetes en faces (side leaps), and triple outside turns? Do they offer mandatory weigh-ins? Do the costumes not jibe with your and their morals?
If any applies to the dance team tryout requirements, either switch ones if possible OR join a non-competitive dance group with teachers who are highly knowledgeable in dance terminology, dance history, anatomy, abuse prevention, and child development. Look especially for ones who are Youth Protection Association in Dance (YPAD) certified.
Look for teachers who emphasize solid and anatomically sound dance technique, no matter what color your lips and skin are and no matter how “athletic” you look. (All bodies are athletic bodies.)
youtube
Gotta end this post with Bob Boross’s 1994 lyrical dance number (which might rather suit its theme well). This was a time when almost only men would do grands pirouettes a la secondes with releves in between in routines in this jazz dance subgenre AND when costumes covered knees and midriffs. Ah, the good old days!
