i’m thinking about elle argent from heartstopper and i just love the way they handled her journey as a trans girl. being trans in any school is hard, but i can’t imagine how much harder it is in same-sex schools, and elle used to go to an all-boys school. we never see her at that school and trying to hide that she’s a girl, we meet her when she’s already changed schools and is clearly in a better place (which btw i love that they did that instead of adding lots of trauma and angst to her storyline) but she mentions some things about her time there, and the way it’s all presented is just perfect

elle never feels like a trans character who is there just to teach the audience what a trans person is or what our struggles are. no one even says that she’s trans, we just know it. and i love this specifically bc we see elle in the same way as her friends do. it’s like we already know her, it feels more personal in a way

during charlie’s birthday, when charlie is going to present his friends to nick, he says that elle used to go to their school in response to nick saying she looks familiar, and in the comic he says “she goes by elle now“ or something like that. he doesn’t say “oh yeah she’s trans so she’s a girl but used to go to our school” and he doesn’t go into like, definition mode, he doesn’t start ‘explaining’ what trans means or anything. nick just understands immediatly that she’s trans, and no one makes a big deal out of it

when elle eats lunch with tara and darcy for the first time, they talk about elle coming from truham and elle says that higgs is much better. she also talks about how she kept getting suspended for her hair length. she doesn’t need to explain herself or her identity, tara and darcy just get it, they know why she used to go to an all-boys school, they know why she got suspended for having long hair (which is ridiculous, i hate those rules)

and there are other examples like when charlie says one of their teachers is a massive transphobe, or when elle mentions that harry used to pick on her sometimes bc surprise, he’s a transphobe as well

i love the way her experience is presented because it feels so natural and normal, they don’t make a big deal out of it. elle being trans is an integral part of her character, and they make sure to not ignore that part of her, but they also just present it as this normal thing that her friends know about. they get it, and they simply treat her as the girl she is. elle’s arc goes beyond her gender identity and she gets to just exist
