Any talented fanfiction writers in the Heartstopper fandom who want to write my Charlie Proposes First headcanon?

So, it takes place around the time that Charlie graduates uni (Nick graduated a year prior) and they’re moving into their first place together.

Tao has joined Charlie to help him do some moving-house shopping, and they pass by a jewelry store and Tao wants to stop to get Elle something for her birthday. Charlie sees a ring that it just so perfectly Nick. (At this point marriage is still kind of a far-off concept in Charlie’s mind. Like they’ve talked about getting married at some point but in a very abstract off-in-the-future kind of way.) He casually points out the ring to Tao who is like, “Haha, you guys have basically been married for years now, are you finally ready to tie the knot?” and Charlie kind of laughs it off, but then they go home, and Charlie cannot stop thinking about the ring. He doesn’t tell anyone, but he goes back to buy it and decides he’ll just save it for when he and Nick are both finally ready. But then just having the ring makes marriage feel more real, like he realizes he’s actually going to get married to Nick Nelson one day and he starts to kind of obsess over it and how he might propose. He wants it to be a grand gesture but he also wants to make it special and personal but not too cheesy and also not too public but not too boring either. In true Charlie Spring fashion, he gets himself all worked up over it, and to calm himself down, he starts to carry the ring around with him, just so he’s ready if the opportunity ever presents itself.

Anyways, flash forward a handful of months and Nick and Charlie are home for the holidays staying with Nick’s mom, and they’ve offered to do the Christmas dinner shopping. They’re walking through the store, just chatting, and Charlie can feel the ring in his pocket. He just stops and looks at Nick and all of the sudden realizes “I am so in love with this man, and I want to be married to him, like, yesterday.” And without even really thinking about it, Charlie blurts out “We should get married” and Nick thinks he means like someday eventually, so he just says “Yeah?” and turns around all smiley like nothing’s happening, and then he sees how nervous Charlie looks and he realizes Charlie is serious. Meanwhile alarms are going off in Charlie’s brain because he’s starting to realize like, “Oh shit, I think I’m proposing right now?!!!!” And he scrambles in his pocket for the ring and is like “Yeah!” and fumbles out this unplanned but incredibly heartfelt proposal. Nick is completely stunned and isn’t really saying anything, and Charlie’s brain starts to spiral like “Oh shit I’ve fucked it up! What am I doing proposing to him here?! Charlie Spring, you complete idiot! Of course you would pick the least romantic place in the entire world to ask the love of your life to marry you. As if he would say yes to you in a Tesco! You couldn’t have thought this through more?!” And then Nick starts to tear up and fishes around in his own pocket and pulls out… you guessed it, a ring! And they both start sobbing, and say yes to each other.

Turns out Nick had bought a ring back in the summer too and had wanted to propose but didn’t want to add stress to Charlie’s already full plate with graduation and starting a new job and moving into a new place, so he had decided to wait. He’d been trying to work up the nerve to take Charlie to the beach where they had their first date and propose there, but just wasn’t sure when it would be the right time, and he didn’t want to rush Charlie into anything if he wasn’t ready to be married just yet. And Charlie’s like, “Oh my God, I am so sorry I ruined your proposal! And I asked in a Tesco of all places. I’m an idiot!” And Nick hushes him and is like “You’re not. It was perfect. You’re perfect.”

And then they go to the beach anyways to celebrate their engagement.

I think Tori Spring was in a manic, or at least mixed, state at the end of Solitaire.

Also, just a heads up that this post is long and detailed. I'm not making up a headcanon based off nothing, y'know? Also, spoilers. If you don't want to be spoiled, please don't read this post until after you finish Solitaire. Note this post is VERY, VERY detailed with a shit ton of psychiatric mumbo-jumbo, to put it informally. A lot of clinical terms and definitions are used here because I'm a fucking nerd when it comes to this stuff. Due to this, I really don't expect this post to get popular, haha.

Did I, seriously, research Bipolar Disorder just to make a point? Yes. I did.

According to the official NHS website,

The manic phase of bipolar disorder may include:

• Not feeling like sleeping

(It is implied she hasn't slept.)

• Feeling full of great new ideas and having important plans

(She's talking about Solitaire as if it's some big, important thing she has to do. She's been obsessed with it. As I said in my previous point, it's implied she refused to sleep because of the obsession.)

• Feeling very happy, elated, or overjoyed

• Talking very quickly

• Being delusional, having hallucinations and disturbed or illogical thinking

(This is up to interpretation. She could be using a metaphor, but she mentions being scared of the "giants and demons" multiple times throughout the book.)

Now, you may be asking: Willow, why manic instead of hypomanic?

Good question. Hypomania cannot involve hallucinations or delusions. Psychosis does not occur in hypomania, only mania, which is more severe.

Another question you may ask could be, Okay, but why did you bring up mixed states if mania seems to fit well?

Also a good question.

You see, a mixed state is when someone experiences both hypomanic/manic and depressive symptoms at once. Which may, also, be what Tori is going through.

While Tori, at the end of the book, shows more (in my opinion) symptoms of mania than depression, the latter isn't nonexistent.

Back to the NHS descriptions.

During a period of depression, your symptoms may include:

• Feelings of emptiness or worthlessness

• Suicidal ideation

(There's more examples in this part of the book, but in my opinion, this is the clearest expression of suicidal intent she gives, as well as the earliest.)

• Feelings of guilt and despair

(Note how she says failed. She thinks very lowly of herself in this sentence, clearly. Even though it wasn't her fault, and, objectively, she did all she could.)

Of course, there's more symptoms of mania and depression than what I just listed, but those were the ones that I had proof of Tori experiencing. If you want to look up bipolar disorder for yourself to learn about it more in-depth, by all means, do.

Back to the point of this post. Tori Spring shows symptoms of mania at this point of the story. However, depression can also involve psychotic symptoms and difficulty sleeping. THIS is where it gets complicated.

In my opinion, however, it's not entirely impossible that she was experiencing a mixed episode, OR that maybe, at the very end of the book, she experienced a sudden drop into depression. Both are possible, and since I'm not in Tori's head, all I can do is guess.

A misconception you may have is, Wait. Willow, doesn't Bipolar require mania and depression for diagnosis? If Tori was only experiencing a mixed episode, she can't have bipolar, right?

You're actually wrong.

Let me take out an ICD-11 description.

Although a single Manic or Mixed Episode is sufficient for a diagnosis of Bipolar Type I Disorder, the typical course of the disorder is characterized by recurrent Depressive and Manic or Mixed Episodes. Although some episodes may be Hypomanic, there must be a history of at least one Manic or Mixed Episode.

So, therefore, Tori Spring can classify as Bipolar with a "history of at least one Manic or Mixed Episode." Which, she has.

I think that's it. If you made it THIS FAR without falling asleep or getting confused as shit, I applaud you.

ah yes im pretty sure they're all very active there canonically too! might be a different platform im getting mixed up with but heres some:

Nick posts Nellie. a LOT

Tori has a playlist story (she has superb music taste) (idk if u can make insta private stories i don't use it much but if not she posts music on her story)

Charlie also posts Nellie but mainly posts about whenever he's with his friends

Darcy posts memes, ones that she made herself and ones that aren't hers

Tara however posts the most gorgeous poems she scribbled down in like five minutes

Elle posts drawings she does and the clothes she makes

Harry posts his fortnite wins and rugby game wins 😭

Nick and Charlie post each other very often and tag each other in it with funny captions

part i. adopting a new friend

nick had taken you to a pet shop since you've been wanting to adopt a dog for a while

"you gotta let the puppy choose you!" he told you, smiling at one of the dogs while he played with its floppy, fluffy ears

you giggled, "they're all adorable so i don't mind choosing, i'll love any of them"

after a little while, a small, white labrador approached you and sniffed your hand, before licking it and getting closer to you

"think we've got a winner!" nick pet it "have you thought about any names?"

"not yet but i'm sure i'll give it one soon," you grabbed the puppy and took it to one of the workers, telling them you wanted to adopt it

part ii. struggling with gender and names

"so uh... nick... speaking of names" you started, while the pet shop worker got your new puppy a collar and some toys and filled in the paperwork

"i've uh... been struggling with some stuff..."

"oh, did something happen?" he asked, worried

you sighed, "well... it's just that everyone has been... misgendering me and... using my dead name"

he frowned, "oh, y/n*, i'm so sorry... you shouldn't have to go through this..." he put his arm around you

"i'm sure that soon people will start using your preferred name, i really hope they do," he pat your back, "if they don't... i'll fight them"

you chuckled, "thanks, nick," you said, as you played with your new puppy and purchased its new toys

from then on, nellie and your new puppy had become inseparable.

whenever you headed over to nick's house, you'd bring your puppy with you, because you knew it'd want to play with her

nellie almost treated it like her own child, wanting to protect it from everything and also take care of it

sort of like nick, he wanted to protect you from any harm the world could do to you

heartstopper headcanons because i need them.

nick is one of those people who type on a keyboard with his pointer fingers only.

charlie paints his toenails for fun rather than his fingernails, which tao describes as a “crime”.

tao is a terrific liar.

elle’s favorite thing to draw are cats. if she’s ever out and sees a stray, she’ll give it a snack of some sort and draw it while it feasts.

tao is allergic to dogs.

darcy has a collection of temporary tattoos. tara was super nervous the first time she visited darcy’s house, but that dissipated when darcy decided to show off the collection and they just tattooed each other for an hour.

charlie does some impressive cartwheels.

darcy did ballet for five years when she was younger and always got in trouble for pirouetting into the walls. she didn’t mean to honestly, but one thing led to another and she’d end up in a heap on the floor again.

issac spends his free time at playgrounds. he says that the swings are the ideal reading spot. whenever there are children at the playground, he sends an angry message to the group chat regarding the fact that he can no longer read in peace.

imogen styles her hair with butterfly clips whenever possible. once she put one in nick’s hair when he wasn’t looking, and he walked around with it on until charlie (who absolutely adored it) pointed it out.

tori stole charlie’s diary once when he was about ten years old and memorized every word. when she’s trying to convince him to do something he wouldn’t like to do she just begins quoting some embarrassing line and charlie instantly does whatever she wants.

elle likes putting makeup on tao. tao always lets her because he finds it super fascinating.

tara loves horror movies, which is something she and tao bond over.

8. tao is a horrible singer but he GIVES IT HIS ALL!!! whenever he sings it's a fucking show. everyone shut up and look at him

7. charlie can hold a tune but meh

6. tara's done choir for years. she's very average and she knows it but she enjoys choir. soprano but lacks breath support

5. darcy can sing very well but chooses to sing badly. she has this rich deep contralto voice that would make any girl swoon but instead she'll serenade you with the pokemon theme song or something

4. elle is a very good singer and she's a bass which people don't always expect. the transphobic boys at truham used the make fun of her for her voice but she's like "can you hit an E2??? i think not"

3. nick can FUCKING SING (ty kit connor!!) but doesn't tell people bc his head's in the game but his heart's in the song. he records himself singing and thinks about posting them but never does. truly the troy bolton of his time

2. imogen is an incredible singer but excels the most in the musical theatre genre. she has a strong mix and her special talent is that she can easily sing "so much better" from legally blonde without getting winded. everything about her screams theatre kid but in a good way

1. isaac has the best voice in the group bc he's the most versatile. a tenor but not in a toxic way (if you know you know). he can do all sorts of genres. musical theatre, opera, pop, rock, etc. he's the person you least expect to participate in karaoke night but he fucking kills it everytime. he has the range darling

what do you think the story will entail for book five, and are you excited or sad?

Oh my god I have so many thoughts! As a reader of the Nick and Charlie novella though, I think we all have a general idea of where it’s going! I’m really excited to read books 5 (and 6!) but sad for it to end. 😢

One headcanon I have though is that when Nick is trying to fill out the “My future” planning sheet for school, he doesn’t know what to put for career, education, etc. The only one he fills in with any confidence is “Family: Charlie” and Charlie probably finds that after the events of the novella, and it really soothes his anxieties about long-distance. ❤️

I so badly want Imogene to be a-spec wether it’s an ace identity, aro, or both I think it would make somethings so much better

One, more representation in media. We know issac is confirmed. It would be amazing to see multiple types of a-spec people to show how much we all vary

Also, I think it would be amazing. She (maybe it was just me being a-spec and no comprehension of romance/sex) was like throughing herself at Nick. Like she was thinking well we’ve been friends, so we must love each other

Cause that’s what society told her. She saw her classmates going out and she wanted to fit in. So why not Nick? He’s nice. She could make it work

That’s also why she was so happy to seem Nick and Charlie together. It didn’t bother her at all. She was happy, and dare I say relieved?

Also the whole ally scene? It would make so much sense for a closeted a-spec to react like that

(This is all my opinion and I’m not saying teen girls can’t have crushes)

ok but i think the greatest way imogen and charlie could become besties is them joining forces in teasing nick. they have huge arsenals but of completely different things! id love for charlie to mention something about how nick was crushing on him before they started dating, only for imogen to scream-laugh and remark “jesus nick, i knew it was bad but i didnt know it was that bad!” or for imogen to bring up something really embarrassing nick did in like year 8 and for charlie to fall to the floor in laughter. idk that dynamic between those three rattle around my brain in the nicest way possible
