#he’s def not benevolent

i know its probably been done to death but i love the concept of the shivering isles as only a realm of "madness" insofar as no one in tamriel has a concept of what neurodiversity or mental illness is lmao

Omg I love your writinggggggg. We need that religious kink with Aegon (or Aemond), we know their mother had to have accidentally given these boys some religious trauma on top of their horrible daddy and mommy issues djdkjdndmd —@thattargboy (on anon cuz it’s a sideblog)
So. I had a hard time with this one but I loved it. When it comes to religious trauma there’s so many angsty ideas that pop into my head. So def went darker than intended. Hope you like it though!!! @thattargboy

Father, Mother, Maiden, Warrior, Smith, Crone, and Stranger
The statues stood tall in the great Sept besides the faceless Stranger. Candles were lit, people praying to the gods quietly. Knelt down, lips mumbling and begging. You kneeled at the feet of the Mother, praying for her patience and strength.
He was behind you.
Aegon hated the Sept, avoided it at all costs much to your own Mother’s chagrin. He took after most male Targaryens, fashioned themselves closer to gods than man. High in the sky on gleaming, golden Sunfyre. You felt he would burn ten times hotter than any dragon flame in the Seven Hells.
You didn’t know why he accompanied you today. Prick preferred to waste away drunk in Flea Bottom or go take his dragon on a reckless joyride. You shook the moron out of your thoughts to pray.
Most devout Mother, grant me your kindness, wisdom, and love for all.
Save me from my wicked blood.
Save my children from abomination they had no choice.
O benevolent mother, please.
“Is this what you do all day?,” he drawled. Aegon leant on a column lazily, lidded eyes glassy. Your lips twitched but you remained placid. Turning to face your husband, and brother, you said, “No Aegon. This is one of the many things I do in a day.” Not like he cared.
Aegon yawned, “So exciting.”
Your chest tightened in anger. The hot headed dragon blood did not like being smothered like this. Aegon snorted, “They’re not real. I don’t know why you waste your time.” You couldn’t help but tighten cold hands in your dress hard as possible.
Angry tears welled up in your eyes, but you remained silent and hoped he would get the hint and leave. Nope. You heard his boots scuffle to your side, the prince falling to his knees. Your own lilac orbs met violet. He raised an amused brow, getting closer into your space. You snapped your head away with a huff.
“What do you want? I figured you’d burn up stepping foot in here.”
Aegon’s pouty lips turned down. He mumbled, “That’s what mother always said,” the blonde jerked his chin towards the statue, “I always prayed to her and received nothing.”
Exasperated, you deadpanned, “Because you defile all of her daughters. Really, why are you here?”
“Our actual mother told me to come see you. Said it might save me from my wicked blood to sit with my pious sister.”
Aegon looked more uncomfortable and downcast, eyes dropping to the floor. You eyed him coolly before remarking, “She won’t answer our prayers because we’ve committed a grave sin. Marrying blood into blood like the dragon does.” You looked up at the carved statue, face loving but cold as the stone it was made from.
Your brother laughed, “If we’re doomed why waste your time here dear sister?”
Finally you snapped at him, “I believe that maybe she will pity me for being married to my own brother, one who is a drunkard that lies with whores until he’s sick with it!”
He flinched as if struck, pale curls swishing as he turned away. Your eyes flickered down to his pallid hands, trembling at his sides. Guilt ate at you— hate begets hate. You stammered, “I- I’m sorry Aegon, please.”
His gaze flashed back at you with a newly found anger. Aegon hissed, “What makes you so high and mighty sister? Because Otto and Alicent like you so much? You’re no better than me looking down on everyone like you do.” He gripped at your wrist and yanked you forward.
Aegon’s snarling face was mere inches from you now, wine on his breath per usual. His cheeks were flushed and eyes wild. You hated how handsome your husband was. All of the Targaryens were ethereally beautiful like that— making attraction almost inevitable.
“S-stop. I said I was sorry,” you murmured.
He growled, “Apologize to the Mother then. Apologize to our mother for spurning your brother while you’re at it.” You whimpered softly, eyelashes fluttering under the pressure. Alicent was the last thing you wanted to think about when Aegon was stirring up unholy feelings. Anger, lust, you couldn’t tell.
The elder sibling wrangled you back up, tucking himself behind, knees caging your legs in. You whispered in shock, “A-Aegon? What are you doing? People will see!” His chin came to nestle on your shoulder, hands came round to clasp over your own.
“We’re only a couple praying. They wouldn’t dare approach when the white knights are about.”
His hips were flush with your ass, cock throbbing between your cheeks. You whimpered again, face reddening in embarrassment. He rutted against the giving flesh softly, purring, “C’mon and pray for your dear brother’s salvation.”
“Y-you’re ma-my husband,” you said.
“Knew you as my lovely sister first,” Aegon mused.
He rutted harder, gasping into your neck. He licked and sucked at the soft skin, you moaning before cutting the sound off. One of Aegon’s ringed hands snuck between your legs. He growled, “Pray for me now. Save me from the fires of hell.”
You felt woozy, limbs wobbly and weak. Your husband’s fingers drug against your sensitive bundle of nerves, shame and desire overtaking any rational thought. You warbled, “O Mother, please save us from sin. Forgive my brother for he knows not your forgiveness, ah!”
Aegon was panting now as he used your body for pleasure. He whimpered, “G-good, keep going, so sweet.” The blonde’s fingers slid through your slick to glide easier around your button. Your thighs trembled while you recited, “Save your child from the fires of the Seven hells, smile upon thee O Mother!”
He groaned desperately, moving faster and faster. Your own breath was a nervous staccato, quivering hands wringing together. You whined, “No more, I’ve prayed, Aegon!” His swirling digits paused while he smugly joked, “Say stop and I will.”
It only took you a shameful beat before begging, “Please, please don’t stop Aegon.”
“That’s my sweet little sister.”
You shut your eyes, unable to take the shame. The Mother’s presence loomed over the pair of you— just like Alicent’s did. But he felt so good. Your head lolled upon his shoulder while you whined and gasped. Aegon groaned, “When we’re blood of dragonlords we don’t need this nonsense mother forces upon us,” he drug his fingertips up sharply, “If you want something, take it.”
You gasped and stilled in surprise, whining high in your throat as your cunt tightened and gushed between your taut thighs. Aegon cried out into the sept, echoing as he reached his peak. You felt his cock throbbing and leaking onto your fine dress, Aegon smiling against your mottled neck.
In a fit of clarity you scrambled from the elder sibling, feeling a retch bubble up. You cursed, “You’re sick! No one will ever love you— blackened and vile creature!” Aegon blinked out of his stupor, eyes suddenly going wide.
He murmured, “You don’t mean that. Don’t say that.”
Still sprawled haphazardly on the floor you reiterated, “No one will love a wretch like you Aegon, as much as you drown it out with the drink.”
The prince’s cheeks grew wet with tears, another shaky plea leaving his lips. He watched you get up and give another scathing look before stiffly walking away with a Kingsguard. His violet eyes looked up to the Mother. He screeched at the bitch. The dried spend in Aegon’s pants now felt disgusting. He was disgusting.

Kinktober: Day Eleven
My Reward (Diavolo x Sub GN Reader)
Tumblr media
size kink, slight daddy kink, dumbification!
Tumblr media
"My, such an adorable sweetheart I have" he praised, pressing the tips of his fingers against your sweet spot. Gold eyes gazed down at you lovingly, drinking up the sight of you being so utterly ruined with just his fingers alone.
Your pleasured noises sounded like music to Diavolo's ears, relishing in your broken chants of "Daddy" as he drove you over the edge once more.
He slowly takes out his fingers out of your hole, bringing them to his mouth. The groan that leaves his mouth reverberates in his chest, tempting him to so much more than just what he previously planned.
The demon lord cups your waist, lifting you up so you were face to face with the handsome man. Gently, he presses his lips against yours, slipping his large tongue into your mouth. You gag around the large muscle filling your mouth, sucking on it slightly.
"Dear, forgive me for this but I can't hold back anymore" he husks out, tone apologetic and yet, his lust filled eyes betrayed any evidence of remorse your lover had.
Releasing his aching member from it's confines, it stands proudly. Slowly, he slides it into them inch by painstaking inch, watching their dazed eyes roll back into their head.
A pleasant smile graces his lover's face, rubbing their tummy when Diavolo bottoms out. "I adore how you look when you're filled to the brim with me—well, I adore you no matter what you look like" he drifts off, leaning into your palm that reached out to caress his face.
Their eyes, as befuddled as they were, were filled with love along with an absolutely delectable swirl of lust. Those very eyes stared at him with such intensity no amount of emotion coming from anyone else could surpass.
"Dia, wuv youu~" they draw out almost incoherently, disoriented and unable to think of anything that wasn't about the man they loved so dearly. Diavolo smiles uncontrollably, kissing your palm. "I love you too, so so much" he whispered.
He begins to thrust into you, eyeing the expression of pure delight on your face. Apologies in advance but, you won't be able to walk for quite a while the demon muses to himself, knowing that you'll "force" him to carry you around—you don't really have to force him since he'll do it regardless.
You've been so good, you've always been good; a delight to be around, always benevolent and bright in his eyes. You work so hard, Dia can't help but regret not being to spend time with you all the time.

Sarah J. Maas really does a good job as a writer when it comes to guiding the reader into the opinion you want them to have for the best emotional investment in the story. … It’s never going to be 100% unanimous (often it’s fun in a way because everyone has their own interpretation, favorites, etc.) however I think her fandoms have more generally conclusive agreements & that’s a pretty impressive feat saying how often her characters & their relationships change; they are built, destroyed, & rebuilt again. The ability to twist the story (even starting with the Beauty and the Beast comparison within A Court of Thorns and Roses is impressive). And I say this as a fan who tends to be PRETTY loyal to my favorites, her books have been an exception.
Tamlin (the beast) is at first a VERY hesitation drawing character, by the time one finally starts to like him; it still feels off (& confusing because isn’t he “supposed to be” the main love interest? “Shouldn’t you” like the MAIN LOVE INTEREST?) then when you finally start to think you love him, your all in on the ship, it starts BREAKING YOUR HEART, until one page changes everything & you now LOATHE HIM FOREVER. 1 book, 7 chapters, & the reader goes through it WITH Feyre.
Rhysand (the beauty😂😊😘) goes from a “who is this tall dark “beautiful” stranger”, to holy**** he’s the one decapitating people😅 & now everyone is terrified of him (for & with Feyre), so the hatred officially starts, until it presses pause because it’s just straight up confusing (“what am I supposed to feel?”) and start getting confused by all the feelings for him; one second he’s annoying, then hilarious, then everyone is drawn to him, until you can’t tell if you like or hate (or love to hate) him. AND THEN SOMETHING IS DEF UP AND YOU NEED TO KNOW WHAT RIGHT NOW so you spend all this time guessing & waiting & brooding & pining—until you think you understand him & “even if it’s fucked up you love him” & then you REALLY do LOVE him and your just WAITING for Feyre to realize it too… And then EVERY shoe drops; you never knew anything, now you know EVERYTHING, & they are officially ENDGAME… until that gets too literal & now your crying CAUSE IT CANT END & thankfully it doesn’t! It just begins 80 times over for Fae Infinity (depending on how that whole death bet bargain goes😅).
Sam we fall for him (even knowing from DAY 1) how it ends; we fall for him because she did; and he did love her. Truly, steadily, from the beginning—to the end. They had something real, a beautiful promise (to be kept… & betrayed, not by them but by the very universe) born among sorrow but not out of it. Something good, built by them. We fall for the assassin, the boy, the best friend; the one that should’ve gotten to be the one or at least gotten more time… the first love, always love, & un-ended one because it’s ending came without a goodbye & before it even had a chance to begin…
Dorian the beautiful & forbidden prince — the good boy, to one day make a good king & a good man; the dreamer you fall for because he wants to make the world better & just might be a better benevolent ruler; ever-looking for his equal to rule by his side. The forbidden affair, yet always almost promised to be — the Daughter of Terrasen & the Son of Adarlan — enemies to friends to lovers (& friends again) burdened with glorious purpose & dark powerful pasts. The might have been; two sides, same coin… seen by all… seemed fit to be…
Chaol the opposites attract; magnets always in orbit always moving toward this; them. The love that brings life, back to-well-life. The guard & The Assassin; the killer & the protector; the prophesied end to evil rule, a woman scorned & hell-bent to burn the crown to the ground — the one who gave everything for an ideal, a good man, given to protect it at the cost of his very life & all he knew; the daughter of ruin & the fallen — the son of ruiners who destroyed to survive, yet survived nonetheless. A truly good man in a world of evil, a goodness that makes her believe again. A resilient sun, she blazes among deaths darkness, he watches her like Icarus. They are the goodness that came out of the ashes. Opposites yet the ones that understood (even to a fault). It was always meant to be… right?! — Their story. You see & fall for yet ANOTHER future, their “brood of children” & running away together. Until…
Rowan I have yet to meet him but from the little (trying to stay spoiler free) he is her match. Though I was strongly team Chaol… and Dorian… and Sam… I am sure I will fall once again…
There is something genius in that

What are focaccia's relationship with other LS members?
Ohhh I believe I have some of it saved up. As her lore progressed, not much has changed about how I initially felt on her relationships with the rest of LS so here they are!
Risotto: finds him the most intimidating at first for obvious reasons. But as she gets to know him she founds out he's actually pretty kind. He doesn't hurt civilians and gives her a space to stay never forces her and makes his intentions clear plus gives her the opportunity to better her stand. She sees him as a benevolent man eventually, feeling bad about how he got into passion and supporting his cause to take it down. They become good friends after finding out their both prefer silence and a good book in each other's company.
Prosciutto: 2nd most intimidating, mostly bc of is personality. At first she thinks had he not been the way he is she would think he's a nice guy and fall for him. Over time his more nurturing side is unveiled (during 'training') which brings out really strong emotions in her. She's definitely never had a proper mentor figure and she quickly figures out she really likes his approval and praise. She mistakes it for wanting to get better at her stand power but it quickly becomes unrelated to that. Like wanting to make him feel better when he's stressed, wanting to make him laugh, see him smile, kiss him- oh no.
Pesci: Her first true friend! She finds out he's also under Pros' wing and isn't very experienced with his own stand. Plus, he's much more nicer to her than the rest of the guys. They both like drinking milk (Pesci bc of health reasons) and she defends him against the dudes when they make fun of him. She supports Pesci when he's insecure and vice versa so they got a lot of mutual support going on and he likes to bake while she likes to help him during that which is always fun. Hangs out the most together as friends.
Formaggio: She thinks he's the typical sleazy guy and she should stay away from him. But he def makes her laugh quite a lot and she starts enjoying his company. He's one of the ppl that make her feel more comfortable around LS as she gets to know them and she eventually finds a good friend in him too with his laid back nature he's pretty easy to talk to and a lot of the times he initiates contact which is why she eventually doesn't mind initiating contact with him either he kind of brings out the more carefree less reserved side of her.
Illuso: at first bc he's pretty quiet too she thinks maybe they could be similar and maybe she'd find a friend in him but he opens his mouth and his arrogance falls free she doesn't say anything but internally she thinks he's annoying for that but as she gets closer to LS she enjoyed hi company too next Formaggio but she doesn't like when those two argue unless it's a silly argument.
Melone: At first she thinks he's creepy obviously but finds out he's really easy to open up to and talk to. He's not judgmental and likes to talk about literally anything (and also stuff like zodiac signs etc) so she finds herself taking to him for a long long time. It's very unexpected for her to find friendship in him bc of how she saw him at first. Even after finding out how his stand works she still saw a genuine person in him.
Ghiaccio: oh man she's intimidated yes but also irritated as hell she really doesn't kike shouting and she tolerates his presence at best. Usually when he's not shouting he's not bad. But she finds herself walking on eggshells bc of him and she doesn't like that. She has to leave the room if he shouts and makes it clear how much shouting and yelling triggers her anxiety (smth both Ghiaccio and pros work on later)
Sorbet and Gelato:. They don't pay her much mind but are friendly hey enough with her. They're the only two members that confirm to be a mystery to her especially bc she thinks of they're already so wrapped up in each other she couldn't even have space for friendship in there but they've showed her some kindness here and there helping her out sometimes. Though some of the stuff they say still creep her out.

One personal solution to the blood dilemma is to imagine Dracula sending his monsters to regularily hunt down criminals, invading soldiers and other undesirables in society to drink their blood, going out of his way to avoid drinking the blood of innocent paesants by virtue of him considering it as being "beneath him" and viewing Wallachia as his land and so wanting to protect it, which would tie in nicely with Isaac saying that humans were foolish to bite the hand that fed them. Basically having him act as a pseudo-benevolent ruler, though one who is benevolent mostly just due to his own sense of pride
I also think Dracula sent his minions to hunt. He def comes off as the kind of ruler who gets off the throne only on dire circumstances :P
I like your interpretation! I can see him preferring only a certain kind of blood, so maybe he'd only feed on warriors who oppose him or might threaten Wallachia, not random peasants. He has standards, thank you. Also he wouldn't want to be noticed by common people, I suppose.
you also cannot convince me that he didn't use hector and isaac as convenient juice boxes lmao. bet that cursed blood tastes nice
After his first death, I'm not sure he usually lives on long enough to need to drink? But most likely he fed on the girls he kidnapped in RoB... by that point his morals have flown by the window :\

ALP-LUACHRA
— “ Found across Ireland, the Alp Luachra is certainly not a benevolent member of the fairy host. Meaning “ferocious little creature”, this small animal is a fairy parasite, causing illness and withering in humans. Regional dialects give him different names; Art-luachra, Airc-luachra, Arc-luachra, “Dark-looker”, or even Ail-cuac. Should a man be stricken with a thinning sickness, it is usually the Alp Luachra to blame, starving the man of his nourishment, no matter what he eats. “
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
— pink rocky exoplanet filled with nitrous oxide, or more known as laughing gas
because of the laughing gas, he is almost always constantly loopy, out of it, and doing things that someone WITHOUT laughing gas wouldn’t do
— alp LOVES tormenting his planet-mates
if you have moons, you better hide them😭 he is quite literally crazy and will torture them with strange cryptic ass messages. but! he enjoys torturing his fellow planets too. somnus and pre-dosore specifically (<— my buddies’ planet ocs)
— while humanoid, he is about 7’0 feet tall, doesn’t wear clothes, and has light pink fairy wings and antennae. despite his cutesy appearance, he is fully grown, and would be considered an adult
though, in his regular planet form, he is about the size of mars (tiny guy!)
— patterns always change on his surface, due to the rapid shifting of his tectonic plates constantly. he is also incapable of harboring life
— he has strange cartoon logic, being able to bend, twist, express comical emotions, summon strange weapons (that he’d have no idea even existed), and more. he is fr an ai bot 🗣️🗣️🗣️
yaaaaay das it for nowwww!!!

Okay, so. TIME FOR ANOTHER NOA RANT, I’m so so sorry guys.
So, Noa’s mind was uploaded into a supercomputer, right? Well, I doubt that even a computer that powerful, especially considering the time period (it def has nothing on what Seto was making in the DsoD era, for instance) would be able to contain the entire mind of a human being, even a child, including all of their memories, their personality, preferences, AND their core…sentience or whathaveyou. Not to mention, although he was mostly stagnant and didn’t seem to age pysically, he was still learning new things, getting information off the internet (?) etc.
I think in the first place that not all of Noa made it to the digitalworld, but also that the longer he stayed there, the more of his older memories, ideals, etc. would be deleted to make room for the new ones. (I already have my own theories hcs etc about the “real Noa” vs the “digital virus copy” Noa but quick aside that the idea of his already existing files not only being deleted but being corrupted probably is. Quite unpleasent.)
Not to mention that imo the digitalworld is essentially Hell in some form (I even have made a Dante-esque layer system out of it but that’s another post), and isolation in a place like that will degrade your sanity even if you WEREN’T slowly having your human memories and all being deleted/corrupted. (oh and the thought of what happens when you fuse a consious human mind with a computer program like that is quite horrific in an “the angles cut me when I try to think” type of way, considering he’s alive and knows he’s a person but also. Very much not)
So yeah, I would have been willing to do pretty much anythig to get out of there, especially since he’d been there for I think a little under a decade already? He probably thought he’d be there forever, and he still mostly had the maturity and development of a preteen. Of course he did bad things, he was desperate and scared, and probably also under the influcence of some major file corruption (which I sorta associate with his Biblical prophet thing, there’s no way the ‘voice of god’ he hears is actually some benevolent diety but ANYWAY).
I’m sorry for how incoherent this was I’m just. Him…

Namor: Conquered Shores #1 SPOILERS
I’m gonna be read/reviewing the comic that has gripped my BODY AND SOUL today, and I’m gonna make it everyone’s problem.
Tumblr media
We start off Namor, 100 years in the future, and the explanation for why is short but to the point, I’m really glad Cantwell didn’t dwell on the whole end of the world plot because I have read those kinda plots so many times and I have zero interest in another one.
Tumblr media
When we first see Namor you get this sense of aloofness from him, as if he’s looking down at these two humans like they are bugs he can easily squash, even his offhanded judgement of “I don’t really care enough, to be honest” would make one think he’s removed himself from the situation of the surface human struggle to survive.
Tumblr media
Ferry’s art is wonderful, I do love how pointy he made Namor’s ears! But the sketchy quality of his work, really works for the story imo because it’s been giving me these raypunk scifi novel book cover vibe, it but it def has that astonishing stories cover art feel to it. As a person who loves most of the Punk subgeneres (cyberpunk, raypunk, steampunk etc.) this was great for me.
What I want to quickly point out is how awesome the colorist is as well, the toxic air in the surface world being represented by this mist is such a great touch!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's so refreshing to see Atlantis thriving when all we ever get in the current comics is another Atlantis is destroyed plot. I love the undersea scenes Ferry has created, it really has this beautiful underseapunk futuristic vibe.
Tumblr media
Namor’s arrogance is present as well, you can almost hear him saying “Am I not the most benevolent ruler?” and “It was I who usered in this golden age of Atlantis”, I love how Cantwell doesn’t shy away from his Pride and Arrogance which are both key traits for this character.
Tumblr media
You do not know how great it is to have Nita back, for many people who may not have read Namor and Nita comics, there is a Big Brother and Little Sister relationship, and when she died it really messed him up because she was the closest family he had. Future!Nita is now Queen, and there is a coldness to her in her regards to the humans that past Nita didn’t have, who knows what has turned her heart colder, one could explore a lot in the 100 years since to understand why.
However the aloofness we felt from Namor in the opening pages is contradicted by Nita’s words “When you do return home, you obsess over the suffering of the surface settlement clamoring for aid to a doomed people.” Namor once again showing that even if on the exterior he is a salty mean bitch, inside he is a bleeding heart. I love how this comic shows that Namor is still trying to bridge the gap between his two people, and how he’s always been the one to stand for and between them depending on the circumstances. The Atlanteans in the comics have always hated and mistrusted the surface world, Namor is one of the few who would actively seek peace (outside of plots that would require him to take vengeance for his people, etc)
Tumblr media
I ADORE this scene, lol. This Snobby Bitchy pair hold my whole heart, but I really love the third panel in the center, Nita trying to copy Namor, she’s looked up to him ever since her escape from Llyra’s clutches, and it’s just so cute, little sister coping her big brother. Also her words, her wanting Namor to be there to advise her. DO YOU KNOW HOW LONG I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR 1 CRUMB OF SUB-MARINER FAMILY FEELS? SO LONG.
lol, to Namor slyly suggesting/joking she give up her crown if she feels the burden is too much and have a council XD this is that dry sarcasm I don’t get from Namor these days because writers never write him well! I’m just really happy about this comic.
Tumblr media
Eudora is a great addition to the supporting characters. I do love a tiny science nerd lady.
The cool blues of the thriving people beneath the waves vs the harsh reds of the decimated world above really provides the best contrast between the worlds. I think the artist and colorist collaboration is perfect in setting the tones for each world.
Tumblr media
I've always said "Namor going to the surface world should feel like he is setting foot on an alien planet bc to him the humans ARE aliens, their world isn't the world he was raised in by his mother, Princess Fen", for once I finally get that feeling that Namor is in another world.
Tumblr media
There is this vibe, this tone, that Cantwell sets within his words that I'm trying to describe, it's like a sadness? but deeper. It's sorrow. It's like they lost something long ago, and while Namor's people are thriving his heart is torn with sorrow over the plight of the humans. This whole surface scene is just ALOT, but the way Namor is shown is so in character, yes Namor is older and less brash and less ready to talk with his fists, holding himself back even when attacked. I like to think it’s because Namor knows how sensitive things are in the relationship between his people and the humans. A human dying at his hands would make his mission to convince the rest of the surfacers to move to one of his undersea settlements much harder, they already hate him.
Tumblr media
I was NOT expecting Jim to show up in issue one, but aaaahhhh my HEART, the way Namor is screaming for him!!! I wonder how long has it been since he’s seen Jim? I just love Namor and Jim SO MUCH, and this comic is gonna make me cry over them I just know it.
Tumblr media
Cantwell's letter at the end of the comic is a must read as well! I really enjoyed reading it and it really feels like I have a person who understands what makes these characters so beloved even if most of the world and time has forgotten about Jim and Namor.
Tumblr media
There’s more I haven’t talked about but I urge people to give this comic a read and to follow along with future comics!

current newest brainrot is diluven as fairytale everythings
I mean like - fairytale AUs. ALL the fairytale AUs - og, disney, reworked, e v e r y t h i n g
So far i got:
Cinderella/Fae AU (totally not in the process of writing that one, nope, not me) - just. Venti in a pretty dress, yes pls (also lots of probably not-that-true fae lore, bc i am a beginner with fae lore but once i grab an idea i grow several wildly different things out of it, oops)
Tangled AU with Diluc as the princess for a change - babyboi be struggling with expressing his need for freedom and Venti!thethief helping him (yes to all the musical scenes) - i have this really strong image of Dottore as Mother Gothel (bc of the manga, where he was being very predatory towards my poor boy Diluc) also Corona/whatever the name of the kingdom is def has a missing person poster left up for Diluc (his fake/new name could be Phoenix? Bc that sounds vaguely science-y and i don't wanna name him after a vegetable) and Crown Prince Kaeya (also Captain of the Guard aka, taking the role of Max the horse in this) spends half the runtime trying to figure out if Venti is scamming him with Diluc or if that introverted idiot is really supposed to be his older brother (the answer is yes. Yes he is.) I have no idea what to do with the magic hair bit, but i am sure it can be worked in somehow - i am really hoping my hoe of a muse won't decide that i wanna write this one, i am in the middle of way too many projects
Mulan AU, bc we love that one too - i admit, i don't really have the logistics worked out, even in my head, but i got this image of putting people in squads - like Anemo, Pyro, etc... Poor Venti wanting to be in a squad with hotguysecondincommand!Diluc but gets stuck in the Anemo squad instead (i have no idea where that one would go or even who would fight who, or even how the plot of Mulan - og ballad or rework - would fit into it, but i can hear BE A MAN be sung by genshin characters and that is a GOOD image)
Little mermaid AU (yes Venti as a princess again. We love Venti in pretty dresses!) - basically usual premise, but couldn't leave my fav princess story out - would have a bit more time for the bois to fall in love tho bc yes, we love some extended date scenes (no idea who Ursula/the sea witch would be or if they were even malevolent or benevolent in this story, but... yeaaaah. The rest of teh Archons can be mermaids too, cause why not, there's supposedly 7 of them anyway)
Beauty and the Beast - kinda more like the og tales (aka Venti!Belle is not an only child, there isn't really a Gaston character, etc... i might end up writing that one if i am not careful enough xD) - fairy!Lumi gets drunk and curses Diluc, bc everyone's fav redhead is a mess when it comes to love... Nobody turns into furniture, instead, they are locked in paintings (only one painting per person, meaning they can't even reach anyone! So sad, but hey at least they can gossip with Belle!Venti about the master of the house... i put way too much thought into this help xD
Just. All the fairytale AUs. I need more and even more than that

Project Maultifaceted - Relationships
This is a three-part post focusing on three types of relationships Maul has presented in EU and canon contents: (barely) romantic relationship, familial relationship, friendship. I think this character is written in a special case where his familial relationship is tangled up with mentorships, so I will be putting Palpatine’s interactions in with familial.
Links to my other Maul!content collection pjt: "Smile" (x), "Voice" (x).
Part I. Relationships bordering on an ambiguously or metaphorically romantic nature:
Spoilers alert
Kilindi Matako
Maul’s impression of their first encounter. His first impression of Kilindi is of her sparring against two Rodian boys (who decide to pick a bone with Maul for the rest of their short lives), it can be implied that Maul thinks Kilindi as “capable;” or it’s more a omniscient narrator’s commentary.
Then there’s this: the budding desire to establish a positive relationship
Tumblr media
As a tween in Orsis Academy, Maul is doing great with training lessons and seems to enjoy being here quite a lot (except for having to suffer the prohibition of using the Force) because 1) he can fight people (def don’t want to be his opponent no sir), 2) he has a mentor who respects him (more later), 3) at least two students show sign of benevolent interest in him. He does not quite play along with others due to either a character trait, if we take it from George Mann’s An Unwilling Apprentice:
Tumblr media
Or it’s simply a result of growing up without peers (and having possibly the most dastardly Sith ever plus a droid as caretakers). Maul’s early Sith lessons is seen already taken root, as he distrusts people’s intentions and questions them at every turn. He does not understand why Kilindi seems to be interested in him, and is surprised when she proposes to spend time together. But despite that, and his awful recollection of “swimming” on Myeeto, he makes the decision to go swimming with her.
Tumblr media
“Not that he would ever tell her.”
Windham was tasked to write this—who knows why—as a middle-grader book. The language and depth of character exploration fit the demographics. Personally I think we would have a better book if this was written at least as a YA, but for this end-product we got, I say it is nicely done, and I enjoyed little moments like this one and when Maul “suddenly felt irritated” as Kilindi wants to give him some advice on the upcoming hunting (and having her advice written in a way to show she is an observant and capable fighter indeed, also that Maul was not above receiving genuine help; awesome, Windham. I grow to like Kilindi very much).
Young Maul and Kilindi did remind me of my first secret relationship/crush-however you call two kids being affectionate with each other but knew it could never worked and would never say it out loud
Tumblr media
IIRC, Maul is arounf thirteen at this chapter. He is brought up to question everyone’s motivation around him (which is just due lesson for a Sith, who are always about to stab each other in the back), to view interpersonal relationships in a utilitarian way, but the brainwashing is not done completely yet. He is unable to simply file away certain feelings, even though he already senses those do not have a place in the destiny he believes he would have.
Then, when Maul is around fifteen: He is not a good teamplayer, a trait unfortunately persisted into adulthood and undermines him eventually, but he collaborates with Kilindi very well. When they are both tested by the Death Watch instructor Meltch Krakko, he is protective of Kilindi
Tumblr media
If we take a concept from SW canon, this is when I see shatterpoints of Maul’s destiny have existed that could have pushed him into other directions. If Maul had treated Kilindi aloofly constantly instead of making (the minimum amount of) effort to get to know her; if he was not bullied by the Meltch Krakko, and given in to use the Force not only to save himself but to beat him down; if Krakko did not try to sell him to Mother Talzin; if Krakko did not double-cross Talzin… He might have been brought back to Dathomir as a teen, or grow up having some semblance of a relationship with Kilindi (although I can’t see this end well; Sith and their ideas of “passion” aside, I doubt Palpa wouldn’t teach young Maul a lesson on attachments).
(Windham, Ryder. The Wrath of Darth Maul. 2012)
The Orisis Academy and Maul’s interactions with several students are recurring elements for several writers in his EU content, though each writer has their own take. James Luceno, for example, in his short story “Restraint,” makes it most clear Maul does experience physical attraction towards his two female friends:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As he is dispatched to kill everyone in the academy by Sidious due to the risk of his force-user indentity being leaked, Luceno adds that "Maul decided he would miss Daleen and Kilindi, and Trezza especially. But he accepted that their deaths were essential to Darth Sidious' plan--a Grand Plan, in which Maul was now an accomplice."
He is still capable, and willing to feel emotions other than anger and rage. Which are not forbidden by the Sith philosophy by any means. In fact, we have a prime example of the legendary Darth Malgus, using his grief to enhance his power and connection to the dark side, after killing his lover Eleena Daru. Whether Maul is intended to be a self-aware character at this or not, he holds onto grief and sorrow as much as anger and rage to fuel his connection (likely not; he is one of the least self-aware character I came across. Might be because of Sidious' training on him to focus on the present moment).
(Luceno, James. “Restraint.” Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter. 2011)
Komari Vosa
After the destruction of Orisis and Maul’s positive relationships, we don’t get anything that seem to suggest he’s interested or ever sought out to establish any relationship beside the Master-Apprentice. Until Lockdown.
In this book, Maul is tasked to find a mysterious weapon merchant in the prison colony of Cog Hive Seven, where at the climax, his path crosses with Vosa’s, despite their initial misgiving (which is kinda stupid imo, no reason other than “i want to see them fight”), they fight side by side eventually and Maul completes his mission, with Vosa hinting at a “what if we work together” and of course rejected by Maul.
*An interesting lil something here when Maul is disgusted by certain imaginations regarding a may-or-may-not-be thirsty warden Sadiki Blirr (it is written that “she can’t take her eyes off” Maul as she watches him fight like a beast so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
Tumblr media
Then we have him and Komari Vosa, who he grows a sense of respect if not something a bit more after witnessing her defiant act against the giant worm
Tumblr media
After Maul saves Vosa, Vosa returns the gesture by turning off the micro-denotators inside his hearts with the Force.
Tumblr media
Maul is not reacting to physical touch very well as a Sith Lord should we all have seen Pre Viz getting his we-pals-now-hand smacked away
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another shatterpoint perhaps? Likely not, as Maul is already on the Sith path, going with Vosa would be undermining his pursuit for power, as well as getting them both killed by Sidious. I like how Schreiber gives Maul a moment of near-reflection, near-temptation for something else other than the destiny Sidious promised him. But now he is already getting pretty good at putting away thoughts he can't process without destroying his identity😂
The novel ends with a smudge of a shadow of the barely existent tiny snip (you get the point) of longing:
Tumblr media
(Schreiber, Joe. Maul: Lockdown. 2014.)
Sinya, a Twi'lek bodyguard of the Black Sun. This encounter happens in EU, directly after Lockdown, the plots are actually connected.
Need I say more xD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then there’s the 2017 Star Wars: Darth Maul comics. An excellent collection that fills in some gaps between the new canon Maul timelines.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I enjoyed the artwork as well as the writing. However, as I read, I could not shake off this strange suspicion that Maul’s *first* Jedi kill is framed here in a metaphorical way of losing one’s virginity; the rush before and the disillusionment afterwards (due to his misplaced connection)….. Anyone else see it too?
Aight, the other relationships will have to wait until I assemble more braincells. Feel free to dm me your interpretations and HCs or holler in the comments:3

The doctrine of self-affirmation is a central element in Spinoza’s thought. Its decisive character is manifest in a proposition like this: “The endeavour, wherewith everything endeavours to persist in its own being, is nothing else but the actual essence of the thing in question” (Ethics iii. prop. 7). The Latin word for endeavor is conatus, the striving toward something. This striving is not a contingent aspect of a thing, nor is it an element in its being along with other elements; it is its essentia actualis. The conatus makes a thing what it is, so that if it disappears the thing itself disappears (Ethics ii, Def. 2). ...
... For Spinoza [love toward others] is an implication of [self-affirmation]. Since virtue and the power of self-affirmation are identical, and since “generosity” is the act of going out toward others in a benevolent affect, no conflict between self-affirmation and love can be thought of. This of course presupposes that self-affirmation is not only distinguished from but precisely the opposite of “selfishness” in the sense of a negative moral quality. Self-affirmation is the ontological opposite of the “reduction of being” by such affects as contradict one’s essential nature. Erich Fromm has fully expressed the idea that the right self-love and the right love of others are interdependent, and that selfishness and the abuse of others are equally interdependent. Spinoza’s doctrine of self-affirmation include both the right self-love (although he does not use the term self-love, which I myself hesitate to use) and the right love of others.

Sorry I need to vent about Dr van helsing. I’m not even that far into today’s Dracula update, but Quincy saying he’s honest?! He hasn’t told anyone anything! I mean I guess he hasn’t been lying but that’s just because he’s not telling people things, and then he’s getting mad that they haven’t figured out what’s going on. He’s probably an awful teacher; he would def teach like middle school level kids as if they’re in a doctorate program. Imagine keeping that many secrets and being called honest.
Another thing about van helsing, is there a reason why he didn’t just remove her head and do whatever else de-vampiring things that needed to be done without an audience? Like him and Seward saw her in the coffin, then he gets all of her suitors together to go back the next day but her body’s gone; why not just do the procedure that first day, either with Seward’s help or go back later without him? It just seems cruel to casually ask her fiancé if he’ll help with beheading her corpse.
Aha, well, you sent me this yesterday, but I will answer it in light of today's update. As I have said about VH before, he is two things: one, the archetype of the Eccentric Genius With Bad People Skills, and two, almost an exact narrative parallel/foil to Dracula. Dracula is the menacing foreigner who comes from abroad to hurt Lucy; Van Helsing is the benevolent foreigner who comes from abroad to help her. Except as I've also discussed, his methods are so similar to Dracula's -- the secrecy, the unnecessary possessiveness over Lucy, the conviction that only he knows what to do, etc -- that he totally fails at it, comprehensively. All his eight million PhDs didn't teach him any social skills (can attest from personal experience, this is accurate to PhD students). So he's already playing a game of catch-up and often doubling down on his mistakes rather than fixing them, since he's still so stuck in the Only I Know What To Do. And he... doesn't.
So in the last two entries, we essentially see VH waaay overcompensating. It has struck him that it might be useful to have everyone given definite proof as to what they're dealing with, i.e. undead Lucy and the vampire who made her that way -- and in his mind, the only way to make them finally and fully believe is to have them see it for themselves. He's obviously not entirely wrong here, since Seward briefly backtracks in believing him even after seeing it, and it is overall a horrible situation. So VH wants to make VERY SURE that everyone knows he didn't actually kill Lucy or otherwise hide the truth from them (even if he did, uh, kind of hide the truth). So his method is just to go full bore, blunt-sledgehammer of truth, make them ALL see Vamp Lucy so they are all on the same page and have had that same experience, and basically get them into the belief stage as fast as possible. This is, again, after he held off on it before, but, well, needs must and all that.
It is obviously an absolutely horrible ordeal for Arthur to have to kill Vamp Lucy, but it does seem to give him some peace, and her as well obviously, so he's ultimately grateful that VH asked him to do it. There is an obvious narrative/sexual symbolism in Arthur, who was supposed to take the "blood" of Lucy's virginity, now taking the blood of her carnal/voluptuous (LEARN ANOTHER WORD, BRAM STOKER) over-sexual vamp self instead. He has already said that he feels married to her due to the blood transfusions, and this is a dark echo/mirror of the wedding night they will never get; Arthur is LITERALLY penetrating her with a phallic object, as he was supposed to do when she was alive. So they're consummated, in a way, and it gives Lucy her "virginal" peace and purity back, saving her from the dark sexual/physical ravages of Dracula by re-establishing her as a respectable married woman, even in death. So that's why I think Stoker did that.
As for VH, he then finally gets on board with the "everyone should know everything" train, and gives them all a long and delightfully pedantic lecture about the origins of vampires, who Dracula really is, etc etc. Except then he straightaway doubles down on yet ANOTHER of his long-running mistakes: he is the one who suggests that Mina should be excluded from the group "for her safety," when it wasn't until Mina taking this all into her own hands that they got anything done. Mina has been by far the most fearless and effective Dracula investigator thus far (along with Jonathan, #HarkerPowerCoupleFTW). This is despite the male characters' casual or benevolent misogyny toward her, especially Van Helsing's. He gushes over her and worships her as a goddess and keeps talking about how she's really like a man because she's so smart and doesn't have Hysterics!!! like those other ladies! But he still doesn't trust her, even now, to have the proper fortitude for the work, and I feel confident in saying without too many spoilers, that yeah, that is gonna backfire BIG TIME. In some ways, VH is the ideal Victorian patriarch, but as we have seen throughout the book, and as I have written about in previous posts, that model of behavior is repeatedly shown NOT WORKING. His effort to "protect" Mina might be well-meant, but it is patronizing, misogynistic, assumes (STILL!) that she can't do this work on the same level the guys can, and yet again, womp womp, VH is gonna be wrong. Stay tuned.

weekly reads (12/10)
the bed me books (#1-3) | felicity niven: ★★★☆☆ (duke) | ★★★★★ (baron) | ★★★★☆ (earl)
⤷ series of regency romance books built on the premise of the fmc approaching the mmc for a temporary liaison. felicity niven is quickly rising to the top of my favorite hr authors. one thing i appreciate is the flaws of her characters, especially the mmcs. since many books in this genre appeal to fantasy, sometimes the leads are portrayed as ideals — that while the mmc can be imperfect they can't be too imperfect as to be unattractive or unsexy to the reader. i don't decry this since i actively seek these books out myself. however niven seems largely unafraid to paint her mmcs in unflattering and unattractive lights. and she does all this while maintaining a romance that is still pretty swoonworthy. i also just appreciate that sometimes her leads aren't conventionally physically attractive, which is my catnip in romance novels.
in duke i felt for the fmc and her plight. the chapter where the mmc writes a series of letters while he's convalescent in london and desperate to know if she's found another suitor is my favorite. he kept the lie up a little too long for me to swallow easily since all the while she was literally trying to find a way out of poverty. so that deserved a much longer grovel than it got. but i LOVE that she figured it out much earlier than he or the audience realized. a strength to the writing is how niven withholds information, especially if it's a pov character keeping a secret. and the reveals always catch me by surprise then make me appreciate how much everything they've done or how they act make perfect sense now in retrospect.
earl was just so sweet. i love a short king mmc and the way he just doted on the fmc was so heartfelt i teared up. they're just perfect for each other: he's chatty and sunshine and kind of shameless and uncultured while she's dark, reticent, bookish, and more pragmatic. one amazing small detail is that whenever it was the fmc's pov chapter, her words were written straight out in dialogue because she was ashamed of her lisp but in the mmc's, it was phonetically kept because he loved everything about her, especially the things of which she's most ashamed.
baron though was just the right amount of angst i've been craving. i LIVE for the premise of an mmc who's been too stupid and paternalistic (think knightley but if he was also an idiot) to realize that he's been in love with the fmc all this time until it's too late. and like the actual ramifications of that (the RAMMYS bro). i relished in his despair lmaooo but i was crying basically every other chapter because i could see so much of myself in phoebe and the way she basically molds herself to other people's validation especially the mmc's that a huge part of her journey is shedding that and learning who she really is.
anyway much as i enjoyed these books, my favorite niven is still a convergence of desire. that one is just honest poetry like there's no fighting that
the benevolent society of ill-mannered ladies (#1) | alison goodman: ★★☆☆☆
⤷ i read this thinking it was an hr with mystery elements but turns out it's more historical heist with mystery and romance elements. which i appreciated as a mini palate cleanser but def caught me off guard esp since i felt the romance was not as well paced as i would have liked. but i did appreciate the social justice bent of the "heists" (though any historical fiction that features all the protagonists or "good characters" with modern/anachronistically progressive outlooks on politics or being on the right side all the time kind of turn me off which is why i appreciate anne with an e because characters like anne and marilla who are fundamentally good still initially fall prey to the biases of their time but eventually learn for the better. like if it wasn't for the fmc's sister in this book i would have found the whole thing a little unbelievable to be enjoyable but I DIGRESS.) anyway the machinations in each section were structured a little too same-y that it was slow going on all parts except the "escape" portion of the heists, which i found acceptably suspenseful
my best friend's exorcism | grady hendrix: ★★★★☆
⤷ have no connection to this time period so i unfortunately couldn't fully appreciate the references but idc. this shit wasn't scary (except for a lil bit in the beginning when that normal ass voice said her name which was just unnerving in how deceptively mundane it was) but it did make me sob. you can't give me lifelong devotion (whether you construe it as purely platonic or queerly romantic) and not make me froth at the mouth. these characters prickled me like they always do in horror but i've never rooted for horror protags more than these two best friends. i do get thematically and functionally why the exorcist did what he did but i didn't really feel the impact of it because we don't spend nearly enough time to understand much less be invested in him. the ending otherwise was pretty much perfect.
