↳ user there’s probably a technical term for what her position is and i just don’t know it, but bc there’s so much going on around the track at any given moment, sometimes the press and other media workers are focused on something or someone else, so she’s hired on by mclaren to specifically focus on mclaren to make sure that there is content for mclaren or mclaren sponsors to use. she’s not just lando’s photographer, she also takes photos of oscar, the pit teams, and the other staff that work in the garage, but she was hired on when lando started so her portfolio is pretty full of him. hope this helps!

In 2019, when you took on the job of being McLaren’s lead photographer, you hadn’t expected it would garner you the amount of attention it has, or that it would slingshot your career to levels of success you never could have anticipated, or that you would get a best friend out of it.

When you first met him back in those early days, you’d thought Lando Norris was an arrogant, pretentious, self-righteous prick who thought he was hot shit because he was a Formula One driver. However, he’d quickly proven you wrong when he’d admitted to you that a lot of the confidence was an act━ carefully constructed to hide his insecurities about his performance both on and off the track.

“I mean, we’re drivers, yeah?” He’d said. “But we’re also actors. We’ve got these personas that we have to uphold even out here on the paddock, and I’m always worried I’m not playing the part well enough.”

It hadn’t made a lot of sense to you then, you thought he was pulling off the persona of Total Douche remarkably well, but in Shanghai, things changed.

After the Chinese Grand Prix, things were dour. Lando had DNFed━ the first in his Formula One career━ which contrasted greatly with his previous accomplishment of P6 in Bahrain. Carlos Sainz hadn’t been doing very well, either, and it didn’t paint a very pretty picture for McLaren so early in the season. You’d thought he’d throw a hissy fit, tear Daniil Kvyat apart for his role in the crash, or at the very least throw some shade his way, but he hadn’t done any of that. He’d accepted his fate with grace, joked to the media about how boring the race had been because of what had happened, and then gone on to congratulate Carlos for at least finishing.

What was even more shocking, was that despite his disappointment and the frustration he must’ve been feeling, instead of going back to sulk in his lonesomeness or drown out his feelings with booze and loud music at some club, he’d comforted you later that evening.

The morning of the race, as you’d been getting ready in your hotel room, you’d gotten a text from an unsaved number admitting to you that they’d been taking part in a months-long affair with your boyfriend but had been previously unaware that he was already taken and therefore wanted to let you know to clear their conscience. You’d managed to hold yourself together then━ mostly because you’d already done your makeup and, quite frankly, didn’t have the time to sob it all off and then attempt to salvage it━ but as the day drew to a close and the adrenaline of the race and its excitement wore off, and with nothing else to keep you distracted, you were struggling to keep yourself composed.

Lando had somehow noticed in that weirdly perceptive way of his that something was off, and he’d sat with you, asked what was wrong, and listened when you━ through tears━ explained the situation to him.

“He sounds like a total fucking muppet,” he’d commented after you’d said your piece, and he’d done it with such a deadpanned expression that it had startled a genuine laugh out of you. Because yeah, you’re (now ex) boyfriend had been a muppet.

After that━ and after all the rom-com and ice cream binging you’d both done in his hotel room afterward much to the chagrin of Lando’s nutritionist and the displeasure of his PR officer━ you’d rescinded your initial judgment of him. He was significantly less dickish than you’d originally thought, and it let you finally understand what he’d meant when he’d talked about putting on a persona.

The cocky, know-it-all prick that Lando pretended to be half the time was all just an act to hide his overly self-critical nature fueled by his insecurities.

By the end of the season, he’d gained a little confidence of his own and had subsequently toned down the assholery when he no longer needed to “fake it til he makes it,” and you were calling him your friend.

It’s 2023 now, and he’s since been upgraded to best friend status━ a role he takes very seriously, and constantly reminds you of.

“I’m your best friend━” case and point, “━you have to come to Bali with me. Literally, like, what am I gonna do without you there? Do you expect me to just go by myself? What if I get lost? Or what if somehow the mafia, who have unknowingly had a hit out on me for years, track me down there and I’m kidnapped and ransomed off for billions of dollars? What will you do then?”

“You just want me to take pictures of you,” you answer, rolling your eyes only because you know he can’t see you through the phone.

He gasps in mock offense. “I cannot believe you think I value you so little! I want you to take pictures of me and be here to help me make fun of awkward tourist spray tans so I don’t feel like a total asshole for being the only one who laughs.”

You laugh at that. “Well, unfortunately laughing at bad fake tans doesn’t pay the bills.”

“But taking pictures of me does.”

“Yeah, when McLaren is paying.” You turn back to your laptop, a photo put on pause mid-edit splayed across the screen. It’s of Lando, as most of your photos tend to be despite your attempts at keeping things even between the McLaren boys. It’s the last of the images you need to send over for their 2023 sendoff, and when it’s finished you’ll officially be without work for a painstaking two months. “I’m on break too, technically, until they need promotional shit for the new season.”

He huffs, and you can almost imagine the childish pout on his face. “What are you even doing, then?”

You hesitate, not because you don’t want Lando to know about your winter plans, but because you don’t really know how he’ll react, which means it could be anything between genuine happiness for you and congratulations, or abject horror and feigned screams of anguish. He’s always been dramatic like that, but even more so now that he’s comfortable enough with you and himself to have crawled a decent way out of his shell.

Even still, he’s your best friend and it would make you a pretty shitty person if you didn’t tell him.

“Believe it or not,” you start, wringing your hands together, “but Manchester City actually hit me up with an inquiry. Asked if I’d be interested in working with them on a project documenting their training throughout the winter months. I said I would love to.”

He pauses for a good long moment, and you prepare for the screaming, but all he says is━ “Man City? You traitor. I thought Man United was our forever!”

“Be so fucking real right now, Lando Norris,” you answer, laughing as you do so. You’re relieved, at least he hasn’t gone the feigned anguish route, but you also can’t tell if he’s happy for you or hiding his true feelings behind humor like he’s prone to doing. “You know damn well you only watched them for Christiano Ronaldo and he hasn’t played with United since 2009.”

“Technically he played for them in the 2021-2022 season,” he grumbles.

“Yeah,” you deadpan, “and he was dogshit. We both agreed to pretend it never happened.”

He groans, “I can’t believe this. My day is ruined and my disappointment is immeasurable.”

“Oh, get over yourself. It’s only for the winter. I’ll be back in McLaren Papaya by February when they need me snapping shots of you and Oscar next to the new livery,” you promise.

The reality is that it’ll probably be sooner. McLaren has always been good about getting you back at HQ pretty quickly, either to get some snapshots of the beginning of Lando and Oscar’s pre-season return or to just capture some material of the engineers at work to promote their readiness. You understand why they can’t keep you around all year━ no Lando and no Oscar means no you━ and with the sheer amount of content you capture and edit for them throughout the season, they’ve got enough to last them the handful of weeks you aren’t working.

Unfortunately, you aren’t working with a driver’s salary to keep you sustained over the break and rent certainly hasn’t been getting cheaper. In past years, your bank account has been chirping with crickets when you’ve returned to work after the winter, and that was before your landlord had decided to make your life a living hell.

You have an important job, but it’s by far the most important, and sometimes sacrifices have to be made. Working in sports media taught you that early on.

“Who knows?” Lando’s voice snaps you back. “Maybe Jack Grealish with his perfect hair and perfect calves will steal you away and you’ll be in sky blue forevermore.”

You laugh, “Jack Grealish is a happily taken man, and although he does have perfect hair and perfect calves, I’m more of a Haaland girl anyway.”

He guffaws. “I can’t believe I’m hearing this. You’re so far gone that you already have a preferred player. Jack Grealish is England’s poster boy! Everyone loves him whether they like City or not!” He heaves a dramatic sigh. “Christ, I can already feel you slipping through my fingers. I give it a week over there at Etihad before you call me up telling me I can find a new best friend because you’ve replaced me with Phil Foden and Julian Alvarez.”

“For someone who supposedly hates Manchester City, you’re certainly well-versed in their roster.”

“Well duh, I need to know my competition,” he says, like it’s obvious.

“Ah, yes,” you snark back sarcastically. “Because you, a Formula One driver, have to be worried about the football players of Manchester City.”

“Apparently I do if you’re calling yourself a Haaland girl now!”

You burst into cackles and he’s following shortly after with chuckles of his own that eventually peter out into a comfortable silence. You are really going to miss him for the few months you aren’t working with him.

The Formula One schedule is so jam-packed across the season that it typically means you’re getting to see him every day for an hour or two at least, if not for the entirety of the time he’s at the track. You follow him and Oscar to their sponsor obligations, their interviews, and everything in between. It’s honestly rare if you’re not getting a moment to goof off and dick around with one another━ and it’s even rarer for you to not actually see one another face to face in passing at the very least.

The off-season is your least favorite time of the year for this very reason, and though it makes you feel a bit full of yourself to think so, you imagine Lando doesn’t enjoy this time of year much either for the same reason.

“I promise I won’t replace you with any of the City boys,” you say after the silence has stretched on a moment longer.

He huffs again, but you can envision the smile tugging at his lips. “I suppose even if you do, I’ll just show up to a match and steal you away again.”

“As if. Have you seen Grealish’s calves?”

Y'ALL! We got an album drop and that cover is *chef's kiss* So happy Taylor Swift Album announcement day to all of my friends who celebrate! As a lil treat for the grammys and the album, I just whipped up a tiny few sentences about Alex and Henry going to the grammys. I think this will make it into Story of Us at some point, even though Trav didn't go to the Grammy's. ANYWHO. Sorry this one isn't the prettiest or the most exciting, I just was really excited for Tay Grammy content! (also. Henry's fit is inspired by tay's fit but also this by eve)

Henry isn’t typically nervous before award shows; he’s fully gotten the hang of the red carpet, and tonight he’ll have Alex by his side so he has nothing to worry about. It’s the announcement he’s been sitting on for two years, a secret he’s been keeping from almost everyone who wasn’t directly involved with the album’s creation, Alex included, that has his stomach tied up in knots. Dressed to the nines in a white, strapless corset top and matching white slacks that have a skirted train trailing him off of the back, Henry feels close to invincible with Alex in black with white accents at his side, their hands linked as cameras snap away and call for their attention. He’s out of it, though, and he knows Alex can tell. Alex’s fingers squeeze his as he leans in to press a kiss to his cheek and whisper into his ear. “You’re going to be amazing, baby.” Baby. It sends warmth curling in the pit of Henry’s stomach, and he gives a red painted, close-lipped grin to the photogs as he and Alex continue down the carpet. He’s thankful for the elbow-length black gloves that hide how much his palms are sweating, grateful his composure is on point, that he’s worked hard all of these years to create a perfectly curated mask he puts on for these events, hiding his truths from the outside world.

This was my first op of the con and I was determined to get my hug pose. It was also my birthday, which I told Jensen when I walked up to him. He had that huge smile on his face, exactly the one you see on the pic, when his entire face lit up before he said “OHMYGODHAPPYBIRTHDAY” in like one go. It ended up being my least favorite op of the weekend, but it does say a lot about the quality when I don’t even hate myself on this, I just wish my face was different (which is a whole other issue 😂). I also walked off with a huge heart and so much love for this dude being the kindest guy I’ve ever met (and honestly? At this point, I have met A LOT). Anyway peep the Destiel flannel and the Angel Cas tee by @sailorsally 🫶🏻

For this OP we were told they weren’t doing poses unless it was really quick, so I shoot my shot: I walked up to them and asked “could you guys adopt me for like, half a second here and pretend that I’m your kid?” Danneel absolutely bursted out laughing and Jensen had that huge smile on his face before telling me “of COURSE we will” before we went in quick for a pose. I love this one, I’m gonna frame it and pretend they’re my host family from far away or something.

This was my first pic on Sunday. I wanted something a little different and I really liked my outfit. Based on my autos I had with Danneel the day before and the panel she had with J, I knew she was a very attentive and kind-hearted person, so I just walked up to her and asked if we could just hold hands. She recognized me from the day before and immediately went “of course let’s do that!” Now, most celebs, once the photog is done, go into next next next mode; not Danneel. She waited for me to turn and say goodbye before releasing my hand from hers, and not before squeezing it so tight it felt like a hug 🥹 Anyway I love her, she’s a goddess, please bring her to more cons so she can feel even more love.

Idk what to say about this one, apart from the (very visible imo) fact that Jensen was absolutely delighted when I said “you go in the middle this time, we’re gonna bear hug you”. Ruthie’s so vibrant and I’m just happy to be around. A witch, a hunter and little old chaoticdean. ❤️

What to say except that this is my favorite con pic ever? I asked if I could perch on his shoulder and he could act like my bodyguard. I had no idea what face he was making until I picked up the photo from the desk two hours afterwards. That’s Dean. That’s Dean being my bodyguard. So from here on out, every hate I ever get? You’ll have to go through him first. And something tells me he’s not gonna let it slide. ❤️

just wanted to add to your last post, there was also a few pictures going around with him in those tityrestaurants as you mentioned lol, it's also called Hooters.

hevwas seen there a lot and what's funny about it is, it was right after he said he wanted to spend more time with his wife and kids, and how happy he was with his work because he gets to be with them, and then boom, picture after picture of him with those girls.

i don't think he stopped going there, but I think he stopped taking pictures with the girls, because after that gen started to squeeze her hand on his neck more and her posts became moe cringey and vulgar and she started to go to cons with him.

he's trying to break free but she won't let him. 💰💲

Oh my goodness Anon thank you for the ask! I had this funny feeling this wasn't exactly his first rodeo at places like this. After your bless-ed ask came through not too long ago, I decided to go look up on Google "Jared Padalecki Hooters". Lo and behold, below we have an Instagram post where it seems he ASKED for an autograph from this girl here, Nadira who was Miss April in 2021 for Hooters. A signed calendar for April 2021. Below is the post for everyone's viewing pleasure. "To Jared ♥♥ Thanks for coming in! Keep being Awesome :) XOXO, ♥ Nadira ♥" is what the autograph reads. Note the date for this post below says May 16, 2021. This Hooters is located outside of Dallas, Texas and is over 3 hours and 15 minutes from his home in Austin, Texas. It doesn't seem like he was there that time for a Creation convention because funnily enough, the one that was scheduled for March 2021 was rescheduled for January 2022.

I also found this old photo seen below on Pinterest which led me to this site here. It seems Jared has always had a thing for Hooters and other similar types of places, even brought Gen to a location based on this photo as someone commented when they were seemingly first dating "Natalie88 I'll be happy if it turns out that Jared and Gen are really dating!" Well Gen, you should've seen it coming that Jared is a boobs man and he likes them "breastaurants". Why Gen would get so uptight about them knowing this is how he was like from the get go, man don't get me started on this kind of illogical thinking.

I will say this Anon, I am very happy you mentioned this to me, not gonna lie :D Funny story, when I was first dating my ex who is my son's dad years ago and mentioned I believe did black magic on me also once upon a time, he decided to tag me along to a strip club with a few friends of his. While one of them was on the phone with his girlfriend at the time and lied about being "at a bar" (more like a strip club "bar" ha ha). I swear the drinks at strip clubs are so overpriced it's ridiculous but hey, they do serve breakfast super early in the morning! So yeah, long story short I was super drunk apparently and my ex decided to pay $50 or $60 for me to get a dance from one of the strippers. The girl who gave me the lap dance actually did let me touch her and straight up put MY hands on her boobs. I at one point said to her "am I supposed to do this?" with such a "confused yet happy" look on my face as my ex put it (and was smiling the whole time I got the dance). She told me that they don't allow guys to touch them but admitted they give the ladies better lap dances because "we don't have to worry about them getting horny". She also told my ex at the time "your girlfriend is so cute", must've been because I asked if I'm supposed to do this like a moron when she clearly put my hands on her boobs and I also had them on her hips and then waist at one point.

As for Gen not letting Jared go, I do believe her time with black magic is coming to an end. I think Jared and her are exhausting all measures available to make their marriage stay alive. It seems even though he made other trips to Hooters and stopped photographing himself at these places, it seems he has started back up again in recent months. Hmm, thank you so much for coming by Anon with this tip.

Can we talk about tzp? I’m glad to have found your blog since you seem to have the same opinions as I do about this situation (as opposed to the Twitter fans who want to force people not to talk about it lol).

I have to say, I absolutely LOVE that he is gay and married for a very long time. I’m so happy for him. His hubby seems like a cool dude too. They are CUTE! That being said, selfishly I wish he’d be more open about it. It bothers me that there’s this elephant in the room now and it’s not being spoken about as if it’s a bad thing! The fans are the worst! A fan met tzp yesterday in London. This fan said he was walking alone with his friend (lol…obv his husband). In the comments someone said “oh how cool! Glad you met him! Was the friend his husband?” And within hours the whole post was deleted. Last weekend he went to Joey Kings wedding with Garrett and a friend of joeys posted a Polaroid of them. Someone reposted it but so many people were commenting “delete this!!” I don’t understand why these fans are intent on keeping this info buried. Instead of just saying “wow that’s great congrats!” and moving on they just want it ignored.

I’m not really sure what my point is with all of this, it just kind of bothers me. Sure he’s entitled to privacy and I imagine he wants to protect his hubby since he’s not a public figure. I respect that. But trying to come off as straight feels a bit problematic. And fans saying he’s been outed is just ridiculous. Apparently he was very out before kissing booth and at that point deleted things and took his ring off. Which makes me sooo sad. But he did post his man several times since then. Just not a whole lot like before. I noticed he hasn’t posted him at all since the movie came out and he’s blown up. It’ll be interesting to see what he does now. He hasn’t deleted him off his ig so that’s good. They did, however, delete the video that people dug up of tay using the husband’s last name. Not sure what to make of that. Anyway I don’t think he needs to do anything or announce anything. But I wish he would post him more!

By the way it seems literally everyone in his professional life knows. First of all G went to London and hung out with T, Nick and some other cast (there was a picture), the director and a couple of the actors follow G, all the the photogs, fashion people who work with tay follow G, etc. So he’s clearly very out. Just not to fans. But I’m not understanding why I guess…

Of course we can talk everything tzp! He looked absolutely gorgeous last night! It's not fair, it looks so effortless! Styled by harry lambert too. He's killing it, both him and nick are. I'm so happy for them!

I'm sort of on the fence here. One one hand (what i'd like to believe) is that they're going for a glass closet. It's the perfect example of what a glass closet would look like. He hasn't really commented on his sexuality, but he's not afraid to be himself (manners and all) and have his husband tag along to events and posting him on ig. He just let things be without denying or confirming a thing.

On the other hand, it seems like they are trying (at least some effort) to make him seem straight (or not married to a man at least), deleting the taylor gerson video, taking off his wedding ring and not coming clean after being out for years before. I don't think this will work very well and for long. Fans and the queer community knows. The evidence is there and easy to find. Deleting things off the internet once people know is impossible.

The fans are guarding his closet for him (as we've also seen fans do for h and l - it's annoying as fuck...). It leads to fan policing, lying and the elephant in the room is growing. If his husband comes with him to events and are seen with him by fans, they're clearly not that set on hiding it. If they're pictured publically together fans and uas should be able to share it. Take cues from them, if they wanted to hide they would.

So since i'm not totally sure what they're going for here (closeting or glass closet) and i'm not clear on tzp's ambition, it's hard to have an opinion on why they are doing what they're doing. Other than the obvious reasons celebs are closeted in Hollywood.

I feel she’s going to release a single only to try to drum up label interest because she isn’t signed to any label, only a talent agency. Maybe she read our tips here where people suggest she just self release a song or cover. The pictures are likely for this project and why not take couples pics while they are at it, while they have a photog pal there, if we can believe the loved up pic rumors. People are making a mountain out of a very shitty diy anthill. I bet the cover of this SoundCloud single is her walking around NY with her oil slick perm and those $5 posies 😂 the one thing I will say is maybe Alex is getting out of his funk by being outside, spending time with his friend and partner and i think it’s a good look for him. He looks amazing. Maybe he’s gonna try to recapture the feelings he used to have for Lou back in 2018, because let’s face it, those feelings have been long gone. I’m gonna try to not be so negative about his relationship anymore. I hope he’s happy, even if I don’t think he is.

man, I've been so busy I've hardly had time to process that the Kraken season is over...so buckle up, this gon be a long one...I'm so grateful to have found hockey, which has taken the place as my main source of serotonin since the music scene has become such a shit show and my favorite bands have become accumulating disappointments. I'm so grateful to have met the people I have because of this team. I'm grateful that I have personally grown as a photographer because of this team. I've never photoed sports of any kind prior to this....aside from my mom making me photo my sister when she did collage basketball....and it's such a completely different monster from concert photog, but also super fulfilling. Plus, I am literally just a fan with a camera, I have no obligation to share anything, I owe no one any of the shots, I take these photos for 127% of my own enjoyment. If there is a shot of my Favorite™ I want to keep for me, I can and will keep it for me and my close friends only. Which is surprisingly freeing and a good feeling. That considered.....I took a few minutes to throw together a photo summary of my Kraken encounters this season. I've been hoarding photos all season to hopefully get me through the off season with minimal withdrawals....so you can expect more photos to trickle through this account as the offseason wears on.

11/8/22: kraken v predators. lars doing lars things. unfortunately geeks was clearly caught in friendly fire. W 5-1.

11/9/22: Tanev at practice.

12/17/22: Geekie and Burky at practice.

1/16/23: Kraken v lightning. kraken ice is so pretty. L 1-4.

1/21/23: Eberly and Jones at practice....jonesy says gtfo.

1/22/23: Kraken Skills Challenge: Lars & Dunner. I just think they're neat.

2/20/23: Sharks v Kraken: McCann. Being able to visit my best fren and have her take me to see her team play my team in her city was the highlight of my year. The score, however, was not. L 0-4.

3/9/23: kraken v senators. I absolutely would not want to be that guy. lol. but it was such a frustrating game. L 5-4.

3/29/23: Gourde having a good time at practice.

4/1/23: My favorite Dunner doing my favorite Dunner things at practice.

4/3/23: Kraken v coyotes. After a team celly I some how caught Matty tripping over his own skates....don't worry, in the next shot he was laughing so hard about this. W 8-1.

4/6/23: Kraken v coyotes. Being at this game was memories I will never forget. From the people in front of me lifting an infant in my line of view, to the row of girls behind me who were there for I'm not sure what reason, but clearly had no idea hockey was even a sport before this day, to the dude on my right man sitting next to me, to the fact I was sick af and snotting in my mask(not covid, I tested like 80 times that week)....none of that hindered my joy of seeing the squid squad clinch a playoff spot. So much happy. big W 4-2.

4/13/22: The last practice this season I was able to go to. so you get some love for Gru.

4/24/23: kraken v avalanche game 4: I didn't think I'd ever be able to be able to go to a playoff game, but my haunting of the apps plus the fact I got an alaska check in april allowed me to be able to see this game in person. It was a wild ride. Seeing Canner get hurt was one of the worst things ever. Seeing Ebs score the ot winner one of the best things ever. By this time in the season I acknowledge that Sprong's absolute madman, cryptid, gremlin energies have grown on me like mold and I've become overly fond of him. I will be very Sad™ if they don't keep him. (and I wonder where that gum ended up....) W 3-2.

5/13/23: Kraken v stars game 6. I thought my personal season had ended and I wouldn't get to see them until next season. But because they lost the game prior it caused ticket prices to plummet and I was able to scoop one up for an insanely low price. I'm so very very very glad I did. It was probably my favorite game I went to this year. It was the win that forced game 7. It also ended up being the last home game of the entire season. So special. W 6-3.

I'm so thankful to the Kraken for giving everyone...the fans, the city, the team, the game, THEMSELVES....the season they did. Seeing them the first year while not even knowing what a power play was....but also knowing that those passes should probably connect to other kraken players.....to seeing them fucking dominating like they did this year has been one of the funnest things I've taken part of in the city of seattle in the past decade. Being able to roll out of bed and drive down the street to see (and photo) them practice is one of my favorite things to do. And the game skates.....also one of my favorite things. And buoy....boy did I have some questions and concerns when they first unveiled him....but now, I'm completely smitten. I adore him. He's perfect. A perfect ball of high strung anxiety that is just right for seattle.

And I'm thankful for all you kraken/hockey fans who have followed and interacted with me here. It was an awesome season and I can't wait for the next.

This is nirikins, was around a lot in the party days. Henri didn’t actually punch him, he shoved him out the way (now that I look it up again!). They h8ed him bc he always knew where they were. Then when Twitter came along he “worked with” fan accounts to send him tips of their location.

He’s got beef with willy bc willy APPARENTLY convinced k8 and the middletons to legally complain that he’d was harassing them for taking pics of them. Willy also h8s him bc he used to follow George around like a total creepo. They threatened legal action then too. He kinda stopped following the royals after that.

Related note, his photog employee Jesal was the one to break the news that k8 was about to give birth to George bc they were staking out the hospital

OH and he had beef with me too bc my url was his name once and he h8ed it lmao. Called me a sad twat IIRC which was my header for some time. Him and Jesal deleted all their tweets after the George thing so I can’t go back.

Book review: The Overstory by Richard Powers

This is a collection of short stories and novellas with the theme of trees. It was well written and won the 2019 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, but I wasn't crazy about it. To me, being around nature is a source of happiness, but the stories were just depressing.

The first story follows immigrants named Jorgen and Vi Hoel who move to Iowa from New York to start a farm. Joel brings along a bunch of American Chestnut seedlings and plants them, but over the years they die off one by one until only one remains. This tree, however, becomes massive and is a local landmark. Subsequent generations of Hoels begin photogating it every season. Nicholas Hoel, an artist, keeps the tradition going. One winter the family gathers back at the farm, most of which has been sold off, for Christmas. Nicholas decides to brave a snowstorm on Christmas Eve to go to an art exhibit in Omaha. The rest of the family stays put. Nicholas almost dies in a car wreck on the way back. When he finally arrives home, he is greeted by silence. He enters the house to find his entire family dead from carbon monoxide poisoning. But guess what remains? The chestnut tree!!! Its “...profligate twigs click in the breeze as if this moment, too, so insignificant, so transitory, will be written into its rings and prayed over by branches that wave their semaphores against the bluest of midwestern winter skies.”

The next story is about another immigrant named Ma Sih Hsuin. He is a Chinese Muslim from a immensely affluent family who leaves for San Francisco to escape the communists who will descend on his family in another 6 months and send them to workcamps. In the US, he becomes a successful engineer who develops an early version of the cell phone, marries a southern woman named Charlotte, and has three daughters. He enjoys camping and has a happy life. He plants a mulberry tree in his yard because one of the things his father gave to him before he left was a ancient painting of Fusang, a magical mulberry tree from the far east where the elixir of life is hidden. But as his daughters grow up, the mulberry tree grows sickly despite all the care he gives it. Despite his phone becoming licensed, when he realizes he cannot save the tree, the normally cheerful Ma Sih Hsuin becomes depressed and “puts a Smith & Wesson 686 with hardwood grips up to his temple and spreads the workings of his infinite being across the flagstones of the backyard.”

I get that Powers was emphasizing the theme of nature being infinite in comparison to individual humans, but the heavy mood and imagery in this book just seemed over the top to me. Stylistically, I also found it to be very similar to The Dubliners by James Joyce, which I read once in high school, again in a Cultures of Colonialism class at Stockton, and a third time in a James Joyce class at Montclair State, and at this point I’m sick of it. For these reasons I found this book’s 500+ pages to be repetitive and tedious, even though in the end Powers did a somewhat unique thing where the 9 characters from the short stories came together to protect the forests.

He makes sure to wave to the audience and camera as he leaves, partly in thanks for their support and mostly in apology for making them witness such a disappointing performance. The problem with drawing first in the group means another agonising wait for everyone else to skate their program before he’ll know where he stands. But scoring nearly ten points below his highest of the season is already a bad sign for his hopes at the title. With any luck some of the others might end up going the same way, but Charles has never liked cruising to a victory on the back of his competitors’ failures. He wants his wins by his own effort. “It was unfortunate with the combination today. I will have to see the footage later to know what went wrong but the axis felt a little off. I am just happy to be back at Worlds and will give it my all tomorrow,” he says later in the media pen.

To be picked out of hundreds and hundreds of girls, to be singled out by Seb, the Sebastian Vettel who has shot for the likes of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, it’s all an up-and-coming model could only dream of. She has to stop herself from pinching her arm even now, still not entirely convinced this isn’t an elaborate dream her head has conjured up. Someone like Seb didn’t personally deal with someone like Charles. And they certainly didn’t slide someone like Charles their name card in a bar with a wink.

He did not wish William a happy bday and doesn't have a lot of pics of W, but maybe it's a coincidence. I think he genuinely liked Harry and Sentable. But who knows. Photog follow a loooot of accounts, Samir Hussein is the same, they usually follow big Fan accounts, idk if they look at what the accounts actually post

Probably because if they follow the big accounts they expect big numbers of followers in return?

The Squad sees him following Omid and think "okay he is a Squadie so I much follow him because he is on our side" and they follow him.

wait so do you do photography for bands and stuff? thats been something i really wanna get in to but i have no idea how those things work lol

i do!! this is my favorite thing to talk about lol I followed a very weird path to a lot of the opportunities that I've had but getting into it is actually very easy and I wish I had done it earlier!

first off - gear. if you have a camera already there's a very good chance you can make it work for what you want to do, but what does help is having a lens that's good in low light, so f/2.8 or f/1.8. Those aren't necessarily expensive but make a whole world of difference in difficult lighting situations (here's a canon example that i started out with) You can also get away with lenses more like the ones that come with your camera if you're just going to use flash though (also not super expensive to get a basic speedlight) i could go on and on here so always happy to answer more specific questions about gear

find small venues and basements and bars where there are no camera policies where you can just show up and shoot (bonus: they also generally don't care about flash) bring your camera to shows that you were already going to be at - that's how you start your portfolio. and if your friends are in bands, that makes this even easier

shoot shoot shoot ~ shoot anything and everything that you can and play with camera settings and editing until you find something that speaks to you! learn more about the fundamentals of photography and look at your favorite music photographers' work and try to reverse engineer editing that you like. don't necessarily get too tied down to one look right away because those things change over time anyway tbh Also if you're shooting digital, shoot in RAW alwayssss

share ~ tag the band, tag the venue, etc (when bands make it clear that they're stoked to see cool photos of themselves it makes it easy to slide in with an offer like "hey would love to swap photos for a list spot" or "would love to collaborate on a shoot sometime" when you're starting out, just so you're spending a little less money to do this and maybe even making a little instead) it's a mutually beneficial relationship and you'll prob make some friends!

put together a portfolio and keep it up to date with everything that you're vibing with as your style evolved (a website is ideal for this) and then inquire about contributing to zines and music/entertainment publications and blogs that can get you photo passes to cover bigger shows where you have to have a pass to bring your camera in (probably won't pay but will get you opportunities, practice, and exposure and it's not a bad way to make connections) Also talk to other music photogs you find yourself around (but definitely ignore the shitty mediocre middle aged men who have holier than thou attitudes and awful looking portfolios lol do not let them make you feel bad) there are plenty of rad people out there who are down to talk shop if you're looking for $$$ for this, apply to in-house photographer positions at venues or for venue adjacent companies like livenation, etc. (don't be afraid to ask other people who they're there shooting for)

keep sharing photos you're genuinely stoked about. just for your own sake. bc you literally never know who is going to see and also be stoked about your work. sometimes it'll be a person who has 75 bucks for you to shoot one set or sometimes it'll be a person who could change your life. I shot shows in bars for a couple years and the right person saw it and enlisted me to tour (nationally and eventually internationally) with a big band bc he liked my eye and my energy. this is all a lot but really the hardest part is getting started and you should 100% just grab a camera and shoot anything and everything you're able to!!
