I’ve named this edit... “Harriette and Carl Did It First but Steve and Laura Did It Last AND Better”
Tumblr media
It’s so interesting to me how this show started with such a focus on Carl and Harriette and I have no doubt in my mind that if Steve had not come on the scene then it would have remained the same. Steve Urkel came on the show and the sparks between him and Laura just shifted the entire show for the better. Carl/Harriette were the first to sit on that little swinging porch chair, they were the first two people to kiss on the show, and they were the first two characters to appear on the show. The show starts on a shot of Carl/Harriette. And that shift that Staura created is no better illustrated by how they were the last to sit on the swinging porch chair, they were the last couple to kiss, and the very last shot of the entire show is of Steve and Laura kissing. Steve and Laura are iconic and will always be famous!! 😍😍💖💖

I wish they would have found a reason to write Harriet out of the show, instead of replacing Jo Marie Payton with Judy Anne Elder. I also don’t like how they recasted a much lighter woman than the OG Harriet. It’s like Daphne Maxwell Reid as Aunt Viv. After Janet Hubert got replaced with Daphne then suddenly she had no storylines outside of being a house wife.

Kellie Shanygne Williams-Jackson (born March 22, 1976) is an actress. She is known for her role as Laura Lee Winslow, the middle-born child of Carl and Harriette Winslow on Family Matters which ran (1989 to 98).
She was born in DC. After Family Matters, she began acting in What About Joan. In 1996, she had a recurring role as Charisse J. Mitchell on Moesha, and Michelle, Nikki’s rival on The Parkers. In 2006, she reunited with her former Family Matters co-star Darius McCrary on Eve for two episodes “Separate, But Unequal” and the final cliffhanger episode “Daughter Don’t Preach” as Lynn. She was on Clean House for six episodes in 2009, as a substitute host.
She co-created the Kellie Williams Program in the DC area. The program will provide DC students between the ages of 14 and 20 an opportunity to produce a television show to air on Comcast Cable Local On-Demand. She stated, “I wanted to create a program similar to the one I grew up with (Howard University Children’s Theatre). I wanted to bring it to the masses, not to just people who were familiar with the arts but to people who had never experienced any art.”
She attended UCLA and majored in Psychology.
She married Hannibal Jackson (2009). They have two children together. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #womenshistorymonth

Steve Urkel, menace to society?
In the 90′s the formula for sitcoms was dysfunction = comedy. There are many examples of this in various shows like Boy Meets World, Martin, My Brother and Me and the topic of today Family Matters. Last year I set forth to debunk the rumor of Judith Winslow that one day young Judy went upstairs and never came back down. So to do that I watched the first 4 seasons of Family Matters and on that journey there was a lot to unpack and that’s not all happening today.
Tumblr media
(AI generated Steve Urkel Drawing Using WOMBO)
Since I brought it up the last episode Judy was on was Grandmom Winslow’s wedding episode. She did not go upstairs during that sequence for any reason. What is even funnier is that a few episodes before that during the credits the Winslow's sit down to watch something on TV Judy is sitting at the end of the couch. Urkel decides to try to squeeze himself in the middle which bumps Judy off the couch onto the floor. I don’t know if that was intentional foreshadowing like they knew that the contract for her wasn’t renewed or whatever but it is ironic that Urkel dethrones her and she is gone within a couple episodes.
While I was watching the show to see when exactly Judy disappeared from the show a lot of things about Urkel bothered me while watching the show. Not things that were funny, but things that were played for jokes and I’m just sitting thinking “someone should probably call child protective services.” For those who don’t remember Family Matters that well, Urkel shows up for one episode in season 1 and then in season 2 he’s worked in more as a regular character until it basically became the Steve Urkel show left in many a 90′s kid’s memories.
Family Matters was originally a spin off of some show I don’t remember the name of where Harriett Winslow is an elevator attendant and Carl shows up from time to time. There’s even an episode where Harriett asks for a raise and gets fired because elevator attendants aren’t needed and half of the episode is her stressing about finding a job but since it’s a sitcom before that 30 minute mark hits she got a job. You don’t really need to watch it unless you have a extreme curiosity.
So what bothered me about Steve Urkel? Early on it’s established that his parents seemingly do not care for him. In one episode Urkel says that he’s not allowed in his home before his curfew time. Another episode indicates that he’s not eating after he runs to the Winslow’s fridge and grabs their cheese. These are jokes quickly passed off as jokes in the early part of season 2, I don’t remember exactly what episodes. The greatest thing that I found issue with about Urkel is his pursuits of Laura Winslow. He was relentless and often put himself in physical danger to get a date with Laura. One episode he sat on the Winslow’s roof during a storm and refused to come down unless Laura went on a date with him. In season 4 Urkel was following Laura on dates trying to sabotage them.
Urkel was basically presented as this lovable character and at the end of every episode all would be forgiven. I feel like that can only go so far, he caused so much money in property damage repeatedly breaking the Winslow’s kitchen windows, destroying other parts of their home with his inventions, burning down Rachel’s Restaurant as well as many other things. At what point does someone say like hey maybe we need to do something about Urkel, he’s cost this family so much money in repair costs, he’s constantly harassing our daughter something’s got to give.
What makes the situation even more complicated is that when Urkel met Myra in season 4 he was practically out of the picture. Laura had this episode where she realized that she missed Steve bothering her and went to talk to her Aunt Rachel. Aunt Rachel could have said something like you know what, do something to take your mind off of Steve, he’s happy and you can be happy too. Nope she reinforces the fact that Laura missed Steve and gives her the idea that Laura considered him a friend. Which caused Laura to interfere with the relationship between Steve Urkel and Myra. Honestly the whole thing was kind of undeserved for the character Myra and I think after possibly going back to that season and refreshing myself on some things I could do another in depth look at the Laura, Steve and Myra dynamic. For now I will leave you with this, Steve Urkel might have been a funny character and even now you might look back at some of the things he did and laugh but he probably should not have been around the Winslows at all.

‘Family Matters’ star Jo Marie Payton claims Jaleel White once tried to ‘physically fight’ her on set
NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles! Nearly 24 years after “Family Matters” came to an end, Jo Marie Payton is recalling a strange encounter that allegedly occurred on set. Recently, the actress, who starred as Harriette Winslow, opened up about working alongside co-star Jaleel White, who played Steve Urkel, and how things allegedly got ugly while they filmed a Season 9 episode titled…

Family Matters
I loved watching Family Matters growing up, but I never saw every episode and I definitely never saw them in order until now. After 3+ months (shout out to Hulu!) I finally saw the entire series in order. Here are my thoughts.
1. The show was always better with Rachel in it. Telma Hopkins never should have been bumped down to guest star with a few random appearances.
2. The writers absolutely needed to explain what happened to Judy. It would have been so easy for a character to mention her every now and then or something! Dropping her and having everyone pretend like she never existed was a bad move. And then to essentially replace her later with 3J…it just didn’t make sense, although I loved Orlando Brown/3J.
3. They never should have replaced JoMarie Payton as Harriette, especially in the middle of a season. I know that by season 9 she would have been playing this character for over a decade, but either her contract needed to be reworked to keep her until the end of the season, or the writers should have stopped writing storylines for Harriette. Judyann Elder was fine, but she wasn’t JoMarie.
4. STEVE AND LAURA. I’m SO glad they ended up together. I always knew they did but I never knew how. Until about a month ago I had no idea how the writers managed to separate Stefan and Steve. But gosh darn it, we deserved to see their wedding!
5. I don’t know how they managed to get away with a part sci-fi/fantasy sitcom, and I don’t know how in the world they got it to work, but it did. Maybe because it was the TV wizards Miller and Boyett. I love this show.

Steve and Laura would have trust fund babies. Laura would make great money being a lawyer and Steve would make great money from his inventions, he would work part time with NASA as either an engineer or he would have his own lab. Also I am going to take his commercial with Snoop dog as canon, he will be growing his own weed called Purple Urkel, he will have his own cheese factories, and he will be inventing amazing things. He will have Stefan around to model and Laura would never have to worry about not having any money. When they have kids she will be able to take full maternity leave and she will be financially equipped.

The Mommy Myth: Threats from Within (Part Two)
Tumblr media
For sure Carl and Harriette, because this terrain is going to get racist.
If Mary Beth Whitehead faced negative media scrutiny, what of the many women of color who were dealing with addiction and gave birth to “crack babies”?
youtube
One thing I want to note: there were medical researchers who did find “crack babies”, however most of them were horrified to see how the issue was sensationalized and, like Ira Chasnoff, were horrified at the term and found that poverty was more unhealthy than cocaine. As noted in the video, most of the babies filmed were premature birthed babies in general, but that didn’t stop the media (high from Reagan’s War on Drugs) from depicting the mothers as in-human beasts and their children as sieves for the taxpayer. It was another way to pit moms against other moms and it pumped up a ablelist narrative.
1982: Nancy Reagan, tired of her image of a frivolous rich woman who spent a butt-ton of money on White House china, Adolfo suits, and brought a astrologist to the White House, took up the War On Drugs as her cause. Despite the sensationalization of the media, drug use was declining since it’s peak in 1979-1980 and a April 1986 poll said only 2% of respondents named drugs as a very important national problem. In September 1986, Dan Rather hosted a CBS special called 48 Hours on Crack Street which influenced a different number on a new poll where respondents named drugs as the most important problem in the nation. Did I mention that this exacerbated the stigma against inner-city neighborhoods?
youtube
That was a scene from National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983) and if you thought I used this video as a illustration as what “Middle America” viewed inner cities and (indirectly) poor people of color (or POC in general), you’re probably right.
Tumblr media
That’s right Erica, stick it to the so-called “All-American” label with all it’s exclusive implications that plagued little girls of color in the 1980s and 1990s (still figuring it out now for myself). It also didn't help that unlike in the Mad Men days when pregnant women, to quote Mark Darcy, smoked like a chimney and drank like fishes, that we were more aware of the dangers of pregnancy than in the past and as a result, expectant mothers were faced with a list of don’ts. Of course this information wasn’t readily available (we didn’t have social media like we do now for example), health care is often out of reach for poor people of color, many poor people of color are often doubtful of doctors, there is racist and sexist bias in the medical profession, and also many communities lack the access to educational resources about health. And speaking of mothers lacking access to educational resources, NBC news connected teen pregnancy with drug abuse, especially black and brown teen moms.
“Crack Babies” were noted to be, very expensive and high-maintenance (are all these old men in the news a bunch of fuckboys?): short attention spans, learning handicaps, lack of discipline and impulse control, they had disabilities like cerebral palsy, they “cost” the taxpayer up to $20 billion a year (of course the price tag for the “Star Wars” program was high), and many white figures of influence (judges and politicians) lamented that the “social service delivery system” will be overwhelmed and they will be delinquents. Most of these figures surrounding “crack babies” were pulled out of someone’s seat of their pants. But these sensationalized reports contributed to the idea that poor people, people of color, and poor people of color were hopeless cases and not worth devoting time or a cent to assisting them with their lives.
Tumblr media
In 1989, the Los Angeles Times had a headline about “Drug Orphans” and about crack mothers who seemed to have lost or lacked maternal instincts and about kids abandoned by their drug addicted mothers (sometimes until mom found her fix); aside from the Welfare Mom, the Addict Mom was used to marginalized women of color who are poor and require some sort of assistance. Unlike the speed-abusing Pamela Rae Stewart Monson, they were an anonymous face on which the news viewer and reader can project their prejudices upon and we weren’t asked to sympathize with such mothers nor their children. And then when the mothers directly abused their children? NBC covered three black women up on charges of child abuse for doing coke while pregnant and one district attorney considered them “wanton” and these womens’ soundbites emphasized their lack of restraint: “I could not help myself”. Then there was the case of Jennifer Johnson, who was charged with delivering drugs to a minor, she admitted to being an addict but had no intentions of hurting her baby and told her doctors she had used cocaine to get treatment; this resulted in her getting arrested and she was given the distinction of being the first woman convicted of using drugs while pregnant. The news focused on a black woman up on manslaughter charges in Illinois because she allegedly used crack and it killed her baby but then the charges were dropped.
Tumblr media
While the Karen Wheeler’s/Betty Draper’s of the world were sipping their 5th glass of wine when the kids got home from school or even balancing a lit cigarette with that champagne, the Joyce Byers and Tamme Dawsons of the world were being more scrutinized by law enforcement, society, and the media at large. There was more support for arresting mothers with drug addiction, and it was women of color who were more arrested and charged for “a crime against the fetus” than white women. When the media got out addicted mothers trying to get clean, it was white women who had the limelight while women of color were nameless, while the white mom was ultimately humanized. It was poor women of color and poor white women who were arrested the most and no arrests have been made at country clubs, Bloomingdales, at chic restaurants, or even in Congress.
Tumblr media
Speaking of humanizing mothers, the media hardly featured a drug addicted mother who loved her kids. Marsha Rosenbaum, a researcher with The Lindesmith Center, had studied “crack mothers” and found that most of these women had a strong sense of responsibility and pride for their children, nurturing them and wanting to be better role models. Many tried to quit (but Reagan cut many drug rehabs from the budget) but found, like wine moms and wine, that crack helped them escape temporarily from the stresses of life and parenthood especially in impoverished settings. Claire Sterk, in her 1999 study on women addicted to crack cocaine, pointed out many of these mothers survived a multitude of traumas like physical and sexual abuse, neighborhood violence, racism, sexism, but turned to crack out of desperation; they viewed motherhood as their most important role and often worked overtime to provide for their children and get help to quit their addiction, often upon the news of their pregnancy. But this wasn’t seen on the networks. The Crack Baby Epidemic was hype! Motor skill issues associated have disappeared after seven months! (And let’s be real, there are adults who lack good motor control even well into adulthood)
In fact what was less covered was infants suffering under the effects of alcohol (wine mom and fetal alcohol syndrome), other drugs, tobacco (”I need a cigarette”), poverty, lack of prenatal care, and poor diet. In fact one study stated:
Cocaine does not produce physical dependence and babies exposed to it prenatally do not exhibit symptoms of drug withdrawal. Other symptoms of drug dependence--such as ‘craving’ and ‘compulsion’---cannot be detected in babies. In fact, without knowing that cocaine was used by their mothers, clinicians cannot distinguish so-called crack-addicted babies from babies born to comparable mothers who had never used cocaine or crack.
The Celebrity Mom obsession made ordinary moms feel like flabby pieces of shit, so the “Crack Baby” hype made these moms feel more superior. But really, is pitting women against women a good idea? Is beating someone down or feeling superior to them very productive? Make our lives better? Let’s have Cady Heron tell us something.
youtube
Next we will cover some more notorious moms in the media, with actual names, whose kids have died (some by their own hand).
