Tormas growled and plucked the coins off the wooden counter. The crone was right; he wouldn't get a better price for the hides he was selling. Not here. A half-orc was a half-enemy, and an enemy isn't paid a copper more than the possible minimum, if they get paid at all. The job posting had offered silver for hides, and Tormas had been paid in silver.

He was overcharged at the bath house and barber, but at least he smelled fresh and his hair was braided tightly to his scalp again. He was rejected at most eateries in town, until at last he found himself picking his teeth for stringy hare meat from a stew with thin broth. Lodgings were easier to procure, though he was once again overcharged. Breakfast was burned bacon and undercooked eggs, and he left town with a single coin.

Hey, Mixed Race people raised in white household, what’s the craziest thing your white family did to you?

It was recently brought to my memory that when I was in early elementary school (probably kindergarten til grade 3/4), there was one special day in school I dreaded. It was always towards holiday break. My mom would pick out all my hair into a massive Afro and send me to school. No scrunchies or headbands or anything. Just me and a ball of hair.

And I was a spectacle. I was 1/2 of the black kids in our school (the other was my brother) and all eyes would be on me that day. People would touch me and put things in my hair and beg me to do it everyday so they could play with it all the time.

I didn’t know it was wrong. I grew up in a world where other black people only existed on TV. I didn’t know that most of these kids I grew up with would become teenagers hurling slurs at me in the halls of our school. I assumed that laughing at me was the same as laughing with me so I joined in the laughter cuz I was too young to know better.

My mom never taught me to do my own hair. It was a ponytail and nothing else my whole life. Except when she wanted to display my blackness for the whole fucking town to see.

TL;DR- my mom used my blackness for clout and the memory was repressed until last week
