I honestly love being in a niche corner of the ATLA fandom as a Zukka shipper LMAO
(I know it’s grown exponentially since the resurgence in 2020, but it’s still on the more niche side of ATLA ships)
Like of course there are bad eggs in any corner of the internet, but 99% of the time, it’s genuinely so chill over here because we’re all just enjoying a fun fandom ship! We know they aren’t canon and we usually aren’t seeking out ship wars. We’re just here to relax and have a good time!!
Along this line, I also love being a fan of the “Hakoda adopts Zuko” trope because it’s so lovely over there too!!
This is why I like to find my nice little spot(s) in a fandom and just stay there lmao - I get to have all the best parts of fandom culture with minimal toxicity😌

Heyaa, when the requests are open can you maybe do a princess x Zuko where the princess is always clinging to Zuko when she's cold? Just a random thought that came into my mind since Zuko is a firebender hehe :)
pairing: zuko x princess!reader
a/n: this is technically part of the fire lilies series but can also be read as a solo piece independently
summary: princess and zuko go penguin sledding
~ part of the fire lilies series ~
Tumblr media
The rush of cold wind against your cheeks is exhilarating as you glide down the snow covered hills. Your delighted laughter carries through the air and brings a smile to Zuko’s face as you enjoy a day penguin sledding out in the palace courtyards.
Being kidnapped by Gilak and having your life threatened once again had been a traumatic experience for both you and your boyfriend, so Hakoda and your mother had advised you take a much needed day off for yourself. He could handle the work of drafting plans for an eco friendly oil rig and the foreign embassies while Pakku and Katara took on the school for the time being. Though you were hesitant to take a day off knowing there was so much to be done, Zuko had been the one to finally convince you that you desperately needed a break.
Today would be his last day in the South before he had to return home, and so you figured the best way to spend your time together would be with a trip through memory lane. You hadn’t been penguin sledding together since you were kids, so it seemed like a good idea to both of you to revisit your favorite pastime from when you were children.
You slow to a stop as you reach the end of the hill and land onto the plush snow below you with a laugh. The chill of the ice sends shivers down your spine but you choose to ignore it. All the back and forth traveling you’ve been doing hasn’t allowed your body the chance to acclimate to the weather of your home yet, but you try not to let it bother you.
“Having fun?” Zuko asks with a laugh as he helps you up off the snow. You immediately cling to his figure in an attempt to steal some of his heat, prompting the Fire Lord to raise a brow as he wraps his arms around your frame. “You’re not getting cold, are you?”
“Of course not,” you scoff indignantly, though your subtle trembling says otherwise.
“Maybe we should head inside-“
“No!” You immediately cry out in protest before he can finish his sentence. “We’ve hardly just begun the day. Don’t you want to keep penguin sledding?”
“Of course I do,” he assures you with a comforting kunik, “but I worry the cold might be too much for you.
“Too much?! I’m Chief of the Southern Water Tribe, I don’t get cold.”
“Alright,” Zuko relents with a chuckle at your adamant rebuttal. For a water bender you’re surprisingly stubborn, but he loves your headstrong nature more than anything. “Let’s keep sledding.”
Your face lights up with glee when he finally relents and allows you to carefully pick up your penguin and carry him back up the hill while showering the creature with praises and pets. He’d forgotten just how much you enjoyed the activity, and it was nice to see that same smile from your childhood again. It had been years since you both went sledding, since you both were just two kids unaware of what the future held in store for you, since you both were free of fear and responsibility and hurt. The war had taken a lot from you, forced you both to grow up too fast, so he was grateful for the fact that you both could just be kids again, even if only for a day.
“Y/n,” Zuko calls as the sun begins to set and the day begins to end, “I think it’s time we head inside for dinner. Your mother said she was making five-flavor soup for us.”
“Just one more time down the hill?” You plead with your best pout, though you know it doesn’t take much to convince Zuko to give in to your requests.
“Alright, but that’s it,” he tells you with a chuckle before following you up the hill. The courtyard lanterns begin to glow beautifully below as the moon starts to overtake the sky, and you exchange playful smiles with one another before beginning your decent down the snow.
Zuko’s hair blows wildly away from his face, his grin the biggest you’ve ever seen it, and you’re so caught up in admiring him that you don’t even notice the large pile of snow you’re about to crash into.
“Princess, look out!” Zuko tries to warn you, but it’s too late. You can do nothing but pull the penguin to your chest and shield it from the impact as you collide into the snowy mound. The Fire Lord winces on your behalf before quickly rushing to your aid. The otter penguin emerges after a moment and shakes the snow off its body before waddling away, but you fail to do the same. Zuko has to dig through the slush to pull you out, and as he lifts you up and into his arms he’s able to feel just how cold to the touch you are.
“Th-Thhere’s s-snow e-every-wh-where,” you complain through chattering teeth as you wrap your arms as tightly around his neck as possible in a desperate attempt to feel his warmth.
“Let’s get you inside before you freeze to death,” he comforts while carrying your trembling figure back inside the palace. If not for Zuko’s body heat, you’d surely already be feeling the effects of hypothermia taking place.
Thankfully, your boyfriend is able to swiftly make it back inside the palace and carry you through the halls towards your room. The heat of Zuko’s embrace melts the ice inside your clothes, but the dampness only seems to worsen the feeling of cold. You shiver incessantly, and he can only look on guiltily as he tries his best to ease your discomfort.
Finally, he swings the door to your bedroom open and carefully sets you back on your feet before helping you remove your heavy coat. He sets the wet material aside to dry before coming up to your trembling figure and rubbing his hands up and down your arms in an attempt to spread heat across your limbs.
“I’ll go find your mother and tell her what happened. You stay here and get out of those clothes before you catch a cold,” he advises you with a meek smile, a red blush tinting his cheeks when he realizes he probably should have phrased his sentence more delicately. Zuko presses a tender kiss to your forehead before leaving to give you your privacy and shutting the door behind him.
Your skin feels like ice as you peel off the rest of your ensemble as quickly as you can. You were so used to beach days at Ember Island and swims in the lakes with your friends that you’d forgotten just how cold the water could be. Considering you grew up in the South, you’re a tad embarrassed to know how easily it gets to you now. You’d been away for so long, and even when you returned home you still found yourself venturing out often, so a part of you wondered if maybe you’d never fully readjust to the climate.
“Y/n?” A voice calls from the other side of the door followed by a gentle knock. “Zuko sent me to check on you. I have the warmest blanket I could find. May I come in?”
“Just a second, Mom,” you reply as you scramble to throw on a fresh set out of clothes and make yourself decent for visitors. After slipping into the warmest dress you can find, you open the door and allow her into your room.
“Someone got a little carried away penguin sledding, I hear,” she says with a teasing smile before draping the blanket around your shoulders. “You’re like ice! Thank spirits Zuko has that natural fire bending warmth to him or you might have frozen out there!”
“Yeah,” you murmur in agreement with a dejected frown, one that your mother notices right away.
“My little koala otter, what’s the matter?”
“I’m just a little embarrassed, I guess,” you admit with a sheepish laugh. “I thought I’d gotten over my aversion to the cold.”
“I think anyone who managed to get snow in their clothes would be cold,” she notes with a faint smile before pressing a kiss to your forehead. “I’m just happy to see you having fun again. You had to grow up very fast, something your father and I should have worked harder to prevent, so it’s nice to hear your laugh again and see you sledding like you did as a little girl.”
You smile at her words before pulling her into a tight hug, hoping the action conveys all your appreciation for her. Zuko walks in then with a tray of steaming five-flavor soup and tea in the hopes it will return some of your warmth to you.
“I’ll let you both enjoy your dinner alone,” she says after removing herself from your embrace. Exiting the room, she pauses to give Zuko’s arm a light squeeze. “Make sure she stays warm.”
“Yes, Kira,” he replies with a nod before returning his attention to you. “Let’s get you settled in.”
Setting the tray aside, Zuko escorts you back to bed and tucks the blanket around your figure as best as he can with you sitting up. Once you’re comfortable, he presses a tender kiss to your forehead before handing you the cup of tea. It’s the same cup from the set Iroh had gifted you some time ago, and the sight of it brings a faint smile to your face as you take in the smell of jasmine.
“You’re already starting to feel warmer,” Zuko notes pleasantly before trading your cup for the bowl of soup. “I should have warned you about that pile of snow sooner.”
“It’s okay, I don’t regret a thing. I had so much fun today, the most I’ve had in a while. I wish you didn’t have to leave tomorrow.”
“Don’t worry,” Zuko assures you as he uses his bending to reheat your tea before it can grow cold, “the day will come where we’ll never have to be apart ever again.”
“I can’t wait,” you confess with a smile only for it to fall at the sudden sneeze that leaves you.
“I think you might be catching a cold, my love,” Zuko notes with a frown.
“Will you stay and keep me warm?” You ask with a pleading look, one that makes it impossible for him to deny your request. How could he say no to your sweet face?
Climbing into bed with you, Zuko envelops himself around your figure and allows you to steal his warmth. He’ll never get tired of being your personal heater, and he’d be happy to spend the rest of his days like this.
You’ll never reacclimatize to the cold, because no matter where you go, Zuko will always be there to bring warmth to your life.

Father of the Bride
Hakoda swallowed hard against a lump in his throat. He had imagined this day so many times since Katara's birth. The details were different, though. She wasn't marrying a proven warrior from among their people. That was fine. She had spent so much time traveling the world, expanding her horizons, creating her own paths. Hakoda didn't think there were one in a thousand men at home who could keep up with the woman his daughter had become, and he had resigned himself to the fact that she might not end up with a Southern Tribe man years ago.
But he hadn't considered that her marriage might take her so permanently from home. A foolish oversight on his part, he admitted. And at least she would have the means to visit her family a few times a year. Still, he felt a pang. Same one he felt when he left his children behind with Kanna to go fight a war too big for him. Now that pang was tempered with bittersweet happiness as he watched the final preparations being made on Katara's wedding gown-a stunning piece of art even to Hakoda's untrained eye. All silks and linens in shades of blue and silver that recalled the bridal outfits of her homeland. Furs and leathers would be too hot for the climate, but Katara wanted to tell everyone up front how she would bring her own culture to merge with her new people. Her groom-to-be not only supported this decision, but had come to Hakoda and Sokka to ask them how he, too, could incorporate the Southern Water Tribe into the wedding on his end. That had been a long night, with strong drinks and stronger emotions, but at the end of it, Hakoda had decided that despite his initial misgivings about the marriage, he couldn't have picked a better son-in-law than Zuko.
Fire Lord Zuko. Fire Lord Zuko was going to be his son-in-law. Sometimes the thought made Hakoda chuckle. Sometimes it sent a chill down his spine. Not that he was worried about Zuko himself, but Katara's proximity to his throne. The crown. She would be coronated the next night in a ceremony as lavish as the wedding. She would become the Fire Lady. Co-ruler of the country that had spent a hundred years ruining countless lives with a war over something as silly as imperialist pride. Hakoda didn't think they deserved his daughter. If Zuko had earned his trust and respect, the rest of the Fire Nation certainly haven't. Not the nobles, anyway. When he brought them up to Katara, she laughed, though it didn't reach her eyes, which were flint hard and grimly determined. She told him no matter where she went in the world, she would have to fight for any respect she got. At least here she would have Zuko fighting beside her. Hakoda wasn't sure he agreed that was a worthy trade off, but he knew better than to try to talk his daughter out of it.
The Fire Nation had already benefited from her presence. As a foreign advisor, she had fostered trade and exchange agreements between the Fire Nation and all of the Water Tribes, Omashu and Gaoling. As an ambassador, she'd helped negotiate reparation packages that have helped the parts of the world hit hardest by the war recover. As one of Zuko's most trusted counselors, she'd helped him work the Fire Nation's budget so the government could provide for education, health and services for returning soldiers. The same kinds of programs she'd helped Hakoda and Sokka build in the Southern Water Tribe. It suddenly struck Hakoda that she had been acting as Fire Lady for a long time. Before she and Zuko had even realized they were in love, maybe. Today and tomorrow would just make it official. Hakoda still didn't think the Fire Nation deserved a Katara, but any chance he had of talking her out of it had long since slipped by him. And he now he wasn't sure he would talk her out of it, even if he did have the chance.
The final touches were done. The maids stepped back in a flurry of excited chatter. Kanna stepped forward, moving stiffly in her old age, smiling up at her granddaughter through tears. She had had this moment with Kya years ago, and Kya should be standing in her place now. Kanna reached out and ran her fingertips over the necklace she had passed to her daughter, and her daughter had passed on to Katara. Kya was here, Kanna assured herself. And Kya would be here with Katara as she made these next steps, first as a wife, then as a queen, then someday as a mother and grandmother herself.
"She would be so proud," Kanna told Katara. The two women embraced. Then Katara stood up, head high and looking as regal as any queen in any nation ever had, and turned to Hakoda.
"Are you ready, Dad?" she asked. Hakoda shook his head.
"I was never going to be ready for this," he confessed. "But it doesn't matter. You are ready."

Working on (yet another) ATLA wip in which during the invasion Azula helps Zuko escape and goes with him (because her beloved dumbass of a brother clearly has not been paying attention to all her subtle warnings on how not to get dead and clearly needs a more direct approach at keeping him alive and mostly in one piece). And in the process of getting the fuck out of dodge, Bato who's been separated from everyone else ends up accidentally crashing their escape party along with Toph and the four of them end up on the run together.
Toph gets along with the two runaway royals who are as suspicious and untrusting if Bato as he is them...at least until the fire siblings unintentionally trauma dump about their fucked up childhood and Bato decides "I'm dad now" and adopts them against their will.
Eventually Azula and Zuko just give up on fighting it and are like "okay cool, you're gonna be Firelord after we kill Ozai and then we can just chill for like, five god damn seconds"
And anyway eventually they all meet up with the Gaang and Hakoda and co and it's just like...
Hakoda:
This is my daughter Katara: Master Water Bender, Teacher of the Avatar, brave and true of heart.
And my son Sokka: genius inventor, master strategist, unmatched in his fierceness and loyalty.
Bato:
This is my new daughter Azula. She'll sell your soul to satan for a fire flake and then use that fire flake to take over hell.
And this is my new son Zuko. He's faral and will probably bite you. Don't leave him alone too long or he'll probably end up trying to fight god again.
And this is Toph... I don't know if I've adopted her or if I'm being held hostage but either way I've started saving up for the next time I have to bail her out of jail.

the thing about hakoda being so chill and rolling with the weirdness of the boiling rock escapade is that he feels super guilty about leaving his kids and is trying to be the Best Coolest Dad to make up for it. this is most obvious in how he interacts with katara bc her having negative feelings towards him makes it VERY clear that he's putting in effort to respect her feelings & be a good dad but this absolutely explains how he interacts with sokka too. like yeah he's probably concerned about his kid breaking into a high-security prison to break him out but he's also not gonna be like "that was so reckless you shouldn't have come!" bc criticizing his kids is NOT what he's trying to do right now. he is supportive and affirming! you're a genius and we're gonna get out of here! also it just straight up wouldn't be helpful. like yeah it was reckless and he's concerned but what can he do about that now? best to just focus on solving the problem at hand. freak out later. out of earshot

Just thinking about sokka as a character makes me lightheaded and in need of a long nap (as opposed to the regularly scheduled lightheadedness and need for naps) so I understand. Do you think the time he spends with suki and the kyoshi warriors/on kyoshi island ever help him untangle that web and maybe see Duty differently?
this is a good question. i mean, suki has a lot in common with sokka, and he recognizes her as his peer, someone who has his back as much as he has hers, and she also seems to possess a far healthier approach to her role as a leader, protector, and warrior. i actually think that if anything were to break sokka and suki up, it would be due to suki growing exasperated with how closed off sokka is, but that really depends on how their relationship (and sokka individually) develops after the war ends. in "the serpent's pass" they do manage to navigate their relationship in a healthy way, but post "boiling rock" they largely repress their trauma and pain and fear, and use hedonism and sarcastic detachment to cope, at which point they don't seem to actually communicate their anxieties, but rather mutually acknowledge that the world may be ending, they were both at their lowest points during "the boiling rock," and now that they've reunited they may as well just take advantage of the time they have now and distract themselves from the inevitable. so both modes are possible, depending on whether they choose to communicate or simply use each other as vessels for pleasure.
like, to be clear, i do think their love is real and true and good, and also that their coping mechanisms are completely understandable, but when we see them together after the boiling rock, they are not only in the honeymoon phase of their first real relationship (at least in sokka's case, but i'm also assuming this is true of suki) but also that this "honeymooning" is exacerbated by a "fuck it we ball" attitude born of trauma and stress. so after the war ends, sokka and suki would have to have a real conversation about what they each want from their relationship now that they finally have the space to heal, and i obviously think that they'd stay together (although not in like a "committed monogamous marriage" way, lol) but that sokka would still be really cagey about actually divulging the details of what happened with yue and generally refuse to talk about anything he's repressed (i actually think suki would eventually learn about it through katara) and that would invite a strain of tension into their relationship that suki may or may not get fed up with (but i also think that if she did dump him, the next time they saw each other she'd immediately be like "im sorry for dumping you for being too depressed i shouldn't have done that" and sokka's like "it's chill i wouldn't be able to put up with me either" and then they get back together and have insane sex who said that).
but to answer your initial question, i do think being a kyoshi warrior is like, canonically/thematically speaking, far more valuable to sokka than being a southern water tribe warrior. becoming a kyoshi warrior is sokka's first step in overcoming the burden of conforming to a standard of masculinity that he cannot truly embody, and while he still subscribes to the patriarchal logic he absorbed thru hakoda, after meeting suki he no longer believes in gendered bioessentialism. what suki does teach sokka in "the warriors of kyoshi" is invaluable (she is literally his first ever teacher/training partner, everything he had learned up to that point he had to learn entirely by himself), but it's largely external: sokka learns how to fight, sokka learns that men and women are not ontologically differentiated, sokka learns to accept his feminine inclinations. and obviously, that is also hugely important to sokka, as someone who has defined his worth via his role as a warrior and as a man, but who feels inadequate in both roles. but it's primarily what suki teaches later that is truly valuable to his internal state: how to accept help, how to relax, how to rely on others, how to be in a partnership.
suki already does a lot throughout the show to incite growth in sokka, so it does feel logical to conclude that he would continue to grow by spending more time with her. however, i do think that as much as suki can help him unravel the tangled web of his psyche, there is a knot at the center that may never be broken, simply because sokka has spent the majority of his life operating on a level of cognitive dissonance that, if he truly recognized and acknowledged, would probably unravel him entirely. he cannot look himself in the eye, and i think it would only get worse after the war (to live past the end of your myth is a perilous thing). so the simple act of appreciating and loving suki does undeniably help him to unspool that thread, but he'll never untangle it entirely, because how can he.

ocean in your eyes (fire in your heart)
Read now on Ao3 at https://ift.tt/QIYZMJA by missmooney_xo After the battle at the Northern Water Tribe, Sokka is captured by Zhao. It's not incredibly ideal, however, he reckoned he could escape if given the right motivation. Most of which is provided by his cellmate, Prince Zuko, the boy they've been fearing for months. The Fire Prince who has spent the last few months of Sokka's life miserable, trying to keep him, his sister and the all-powerful twelve year old boy alive. It's his rotten luck to be locked up with Zuko, he's only going to foil his plans wherever they go. At least, that's what Sokka thought. The thing about war is, the smoke rises so high, so thick, things aren't as clear as they once were. Sokka believed all Fire Nation was evil, that it was only capable to destroy. All he saw when he looked at the Fire Nation was the fire in their eyes. But what could possibly happen when he starts to feel the fire in the heart of one, golden-eyed boy, who is more than he appears? Sokka's got a lot of learning to do, as does Zuko. Slowly, they're finding that as long as they're together, they might be able to take on anything. Road Trip Au Atla Verse
Zuko realizes early on in his banishment the truth, doubts his uncle cares because adults can't be trusted and sends a letter to azula to let her know that he is still her big brother and he cares about her but he is not going to go on a fool's quest.

For the guessing word game! Chill.
Some sibling teasing and fatherly nostalgia for you?
“Not you, apparently,” Katara says, giving him an arch look. “Cutting your primping time short, aren’t you?” she says, prim expression immediately breaking when Sokka presses cold-chill fingers to the back of her neck, their needling so familiar that Hakoda half-expects them to start shrieking and trying to shove snow down the back of each other’s tunics.

ZKMC Week Day 3: Hunter/Monster // Cure
The full fic is not finished yet, but I wanted to share what I do have.
----
It was cold and raining when Zuko stepped off the bus in the quiet little town of Mossville. The hood of his coat was drawn up over his head, his golden eyes almost glowing in the shadow cast on his face, in the darkness of the overcast evening sky. Late into the autumn season, many of the trees were already bare of leaves, their branches twisted and dark as they stuck out ominously into the sky. Soaked piles of leaves lay scattered about the roads, blown against the walls of buildings and stuck in the roots of thick bushes that lined the gardens of houses; they formed hiding places for small animals that were unlucky enough to not have shelter from the abysmal weather.
Zuko’s boots slapped against water built up on the pavement as he made his way further into the town. Porch lights flickered and wavered in the rain, illuminating shuttered windows and deadbolted doors. The streetlamps were all but dead, one or two casting meager light a few inches around the bulb but not reaching the ground below. The rest were hollow, empty. Dark.
The air was heavy, the blanket of fear that had enveloped the town almost suffocating in its intensity. It was a feeling he was intimately familiar with, the feeling of a town being poisoned and sucked dry by whatever monster haunted its grounds.
It was his job to find that monster and destroy it.
The steps of the house he was looking for were adorned with plump orange pumpkins. Planter boxes and large flower pots sat in every spare space on the porch, filled to the brim with dark masses of leaves and flowers, the colors of which Zuko could not discern in the grey dimness. The porch light was off.
He knocked.
The slight murmur of voices that he had been able to hear above the downpour stopped. He felt the energy shift from casual enjoyment to fear and suspicion, heard the scraping of chairs as people stood from the dinner table.
The porch light came on with a hum of electricity and a bright flash of a bulb; Zuko blinked several times as his eyes adjusted to the sudden change.
“Who is it?”
The voice came from beyond the still-closed door, muffled slightly but still audible. Zuko’s eyes flickered over the peephole set in the center of the wood. He lowered his hood, casually, so his face was visible. His damp hair clung to his skin, the chill temperatures cutting into him.
“Zuko Sozin. I’m looking for Hakoda Kuruk.”
He heard mumbled words, confusion, and fought to keep his face neutral instead of annoyed in case he was being watched through the peephole. Several long seconds passed, and Zuko pulled his coat tighter around himself.
He couldn’t blame them for being suspicious. He would have been suspicious himself if they weren’t wary of him. When people called him in, it meant they were in trouble, and from what little information he’d been given already, he knew that this monster was an expert at gaining access to people’s homes without breaking and entering.
“Oh, for fuck’s sake, Sokka!”
A new voice this time. Female and fierce, but also sweet and full of kindness. A bright spot in the darkness of this fearful town.
The door was pulled open, almost violently, and then halted after just a few inches, the door chain catching the wood with a slight thud. There was a flurry of motion - Zuko caught sight of a mass of dark brown curls as the scent of peonies tickled his nose - before the door was shut with a muttered, “fuck.” There was the sound of fingers scrabbling at the chain, another muffled curse, and then the door was swiftly pulled open again.
Zuko was suddenly facing a young woman with eyes like the sunlit ocean and a radiant smile that showed off the dimples in her cheeks. Thick, chocolatey waves cascaded around her face and neck; his eyes caught on the necklace at her throat, dark velvet ribbon with a light blue stone, contrasting with skin the color of his morning coffee. She was shorter than him by at least a head, her slender frame buried beneath a sweater three sizes too big for her; it hung off one of her shoulders, revealing the fact that she wore nothing underneath it. He traced his eyes over the spattering of freckles where the sun had kissed her skin until they disappeared beneath the fabric, and then raised his gaze to meet hers once more.
His breath caught in his throat, the smell of peonies tantalizing in his nose.
“Come on in,” she said brightly, stepping aside so there was room for Zuko to maneuver his way through the door.

Just for fun, here are my rapid fire rambling thoughts on the ATLA ships and platonic dynamics hehe (please don’t go full ship wars tho - these are just my opinions as a chill multishipper!)
My Favorite Ships:
• Zukka - My current brainrot and main ship!! I know they aren’t canon but I really love them and their potential okay😭I just feel like their personalities would work so well! Sokka would call Zuko on his shit and Zuko would be good at grounding Sokka when he needs it. Plus I have seen some absolutely breathtaking AUs with this ship! And fire-and-ice vibes except gay! Them <3
• Kataang - Cutiessss!! I love them! They may not be the ship I think about most often, but when I do think about them, they’re adorable! Aang is such a “my wife” guy and Katara absolutely adores him back! Also the last airbender x last southern waterbender dynamic goes HARD! I like that these two are canon!
• Yuetara - Listen I know they barely interacted but THEY’VE ACTUALLY GROWN ON ME SO MUCH LATELY AND I VERY HIGH KEY SHIP THEM! Something about like, Katara thinking about Yue when she bends is so😭Their story would be heartbreaking in the best way!! Sapphic noncanon blorbos <3
• Mailee - These two are SO cute and have so much potential rahhh!! Again, love some noncanon sapphics <3
• Batkoda - Super SUPER cute and silly and fun! The dads fr <3 Bato is either Katara and Sokka’s adopted uncle or their stepdad and I love it for them hehe! This usually pairs well with a “Hakoda adopts Zuko” AU lmao!
Other Canon/Relatively Popular Ships:
• Zutara - A pretty good ship! I see the potential and tbh it’s very very fun to think about sometimes!!! However, some of y’all toxic Zutara stans need to leave my boy Aang alone lmao. Those who are chill tho, I rock with y’all!! Overall, I’m not opposed if it’s done well and I do occasionally seek out Zutara content! I personally do prefer seeing/writing them as found siblings tho, especially with the Azula and Katara parallels!!
• Sukka - Canon cuties!! I really like them! Suki my BELOVED <3 She’s so underrated!
• Yukka - Also canon cuties! They make me sad tho ahhhhh😭😭😭
• Maiko - Also ALSO canon cuties!! They have an interesting dynamic that I can really appreciate! And gotta love Mai <3
• Jinko - Jin my beloved! These two had a super cute dynamic during the one episode they had together lmaoooo, tho I don’t think about this ship too too often.
• Tokka - I don’t mind it if it’s them getting together as adults! But tbh I personally don’t prefer shipping them as teens and I think Toph’s crush was just a typical young girl crush on someone slightly older lol. Definitely not horrible and most Tokka shippers are relatively chill! I like to think Sokka sees Toph as a little sister tho.
Now For Some Of The Crackship-y/Less Popular Ships (based on ships I’ve actually seen):
• Zukki (Zuko/Sokka/Suki) - Power throuple fr and I love some polyamory!! While I mostly lean plain Zukka, this is extremely fun to think about and would be a great dynamic!
• Mai/Ty Lee/Suki - Saw this in a Zukka fic once and it was adorableeeeee! I may not have plans to actively write this or anything, but it’s cute! Another power throuple!
• Jetko - I don’t think they would be compatible long term, but by god they are very very fun to think about in a “Jet flirts with Zuko and Zuko is completely oblivious and they share one kiss before everything goes to shit” way lmao!
• Taang - I can respect it!! I will always love them as chaos siblings personally, but it’s a totally valid and chill ship!
• Katoph - Not a bad ship at all! I’ve only come across like one post tho lmao. Also I do think I heavily prefer them as found sisters, but that’s just me personally! Again, totally a valid and chill ship!
• Azutara - I’m very neutral on this lmao. I don’t despise it at all and it could be pretty interesting?? But tbh really not something I plan to seek out.
• Azulaang - I mean?? I’m also pretty neutral on this one. Aang would be kind to her if she was trying to get help but…idk lmao.
• Tyzula - I see the potential, but I personally think Mai and Ty Lee had a healthier and more interesting and more realistic dynamic. Just my preference tho!
(I think I just want Azula to be in therapy before I reallyyyyy ship her lmao, but NOT THE KIND OF “THERAPY” SHE WAS GIVEN IN THE COMICS)
• Zukaang - I don’t love this as a ship honestly. The canon age gap as teens is sketchy for my personal taste, tho I’ve seen people ship them in “Aang was 16 when he got frozen” AUs and that’s…better and I can get behind it a little! It would be interesting! But I think Roku being Zuko’s great-grandpa just still throws me off of this ship. I don’t have any beef with the shippers tho! I’m very “live and let live” and I have seen so much worse lol.
Can’t Forget My Fav Platonic Dynamics!
• Sokka and Aang - Two found brothers who share one idiot braincell when they interact LMAO! Love them always <3
• Sokka and Katara - The siblings ever!!
• Zuko and Aang - Enemies to found brothers!! Canon besties! I love their friendship and their parallels SO MUCH!!
• Toph and Katara - Absolutely ADORABLE as found sisters!!!! Love them!
• Zuko and Katara - I really like their development in a platonic sense and I think they’re very very fun and lovely found siblings by the end!!!! Zuko is 100% the brother that just “yeah my sister can and will whoop your ass” LMAO!
• Zuko and Toph - Also very found siblings in my head!! Only have a handful of solo interactions in canon but I DON’T CARE! I WILL FOUND FAMILY THEM ANYWAY! I’m a “Toph seeks out Zuko for sibling hugs/cuddles when she’s cold because he’s basically a space heater” truther.
• Uncle Iroh and the Gaang - Zuko needs to learn to share because that is ALL OF THEIR Uncle!!!
• Hakoda and Zuko - I thrive in this section of the fandom!! They have exactly one (1) frame together in canon, but I ADORE Dadkoda adopting Zuko! Something about it is just so wholesome and cute!!! My very very fav ATLA fics are this trope!!#LetHakodaBitchSlapOzaiAndAdoptZuko2024
• Uncle Iroh and Zuko - God they make me so ALSNDKSNXNCNSNSNXNX, y’know?
• The Gaang as a whole - Obvious I know, but I really do love them😭They all bonded sm and I adore their little family!! I eat up fanart of the Gaang cuddling like CANDY omg. And yes Suki is included in the Gaang because WHY WOULDN’T SHE BE!
Anyway, thanks for coming to my TedTalk. If you made it to the end, you get a big platonic kiss on the forehead MWAH!

thinking about dadbod hakoda...specifically modern au like he used to be more "in shape" but then kya passed and now he's working multiple jobs to support the family and doesn't see his kids as much as he should and he's wearing cargo shorts and ratty old hoodies most of the time and he's stressed and doesn't really think he's attractive ESPECIALLY not to his tall hot best friend bato who seems to live a totally chill childless life but little does he know that bato a) wants to help him & be there for him and his family and b) short-circuits every time hakoda raises his arms and his shirt rides up

Ok bato and hakoda relationship analysis go
FUCK you guys are really gonna make me talk about bakoda aren't you. you're not gonna like it but okay here goes
let me spin you a yarn that i promise is relevant and not me going 'ha you asked a chill question and now im going to tell you about myself'. so fact number 1: i posted taob when i was 17 in the horrific august of 2020, back when i thought i was straight. fact number 2: the way i write is that i do one massive fuck off plot outline of the WHOLE thing and while i do edit and add things as i go, i generally stick to the plot outline. so for context of how ridiculous that is for a project like taob, the plot outline for ch39 that we've just had, that was posted 300k+ words and 2 years into the story, is the same plot outline i had before i even wrote a single word of taob in 2020. make sense? SO why am i talking about this, you ask? because not only did i think i was straight when i was writing my little outline, but i also had a lot of personal shit surrounding queerness and just general internalised things, and while that obviously doesn't show in taob (hella1975 homophobic in hit zukka fic confirmed) the lack of what i'll call 'excessive' (i obvs dont mean that but i cant think of another word) queerness is where it manifested itself. i was in a stage of my life where not only did i myself not know why i was so desperate for more queerness in what i read and wrote, but i also thought i had to JUSTIFY every aspect of queerness i represented (jokes on me bc i dont think any of my readers are cishet+non-aspec and if they are hi you are brave how did you get here). taob is this huge thing that got wayyy out of hand in the best way, but honestly it started when i was literally just a confused child. do i ship bakoda? yep i do those fuckers deserve it. do i think tom nook should get together? hell yeah! will it make it into taob? probably not, bc i can't change the way i write and unfortunately than means sticking to the plans i made at the beginning. at least my foreshadowing is good though <3 sorry gay people
ANYWAY anon im so sorry i kinda just used you as a way of clearing up something that has been talked about in the cult for months without even giving you anything about hakdoa and bato but yeah <333 i dont mind the 'hella make bakoda canon' jokes bc it genuinely is very funny to me to taunt you guys constantly but i also do actually love and respect you guys a lot and i want you to know im not just doing it for the sake of it lol

the population of avatar is really just. straight up goofy. even if you try and be generous its 74% earth kingdom and 25% fire nation, and thats mostly because fire nation has germinated its seed everywhere but there's just. not enough land. they try and pretend like "oh look see hama and the swampbenders and hakoda" but cmon theres like maybe a few hundred water tribe people worldwide, and the few we see outside the tribes themselves only prove further how tightknit they are... like wow i guess the big cool waterbending master was dating grandma all this time thats not suspicious at all. in korra they try to imply it exploded in population or something? maybe they fucked a lot. theres def more than a few in republic city so maybe we're at a generous 5% of the population instead of like... 0.5%
fire nation is clearly second place. they have a lil funny set of island and they probably spread out a lot during the hundred year war but that comes off more as military outcroppings than having Beloved Local Cop so I don't think they much spread outside of being born in a prosperous nation. but genociding a whole nation honestly didn't change the population percentages much. i'd believe they're still a large chunk of the people in lok if not moreso just for funsies
theres one air dude in atla i think... then there's like five proper air dudes in korra (we lost the first guy i think? idk who that was), and a bunch of air acolytes. depending on how u count it theres like a few fingers worth of people or maybe a few hundred? its like really orders of magnitude here.
theres SO many earth kingdom fuckers though thats like most of the population holy shit they're everywhere. theres like 100 million ppl in ba sing se and then republic city is like 10 billion people i think so where else did all the earth people come from
also theres a bajillion spirits but they're chill

OMG I just watched the DoBS pt 2 of S3 in ATLA.
I'm very late and have skipped stuff whuch I should go back to...
BUT WHAT THE ACTUAL HECK THERE IS SO MUCH STUFF I HAVEN'T SEEN MUCH META ABOUT ?!
My boy Sokka ??? Literally the best strategist ? Hakoda being the bravest dad ever ? I can't even ? Sokka is so so so smart and underrated. I can't even. The way he guessed Ozai had a bunker. His impeccable team work and complimenting Toph. The way he knew where Azula was going though she did get him. Ofc, Toph being the best earthbender. The way that little powerhouse found the effing bunker. She folded that hugeass metal door. Aang being Aang, the last hope of the world y'know. And Azula. Azula is absolutely fabulous. Then there is the parallel between her manipulating Sokka with Suki and Ozai manipulating Zuko to stay with Ursa...That was very interesting. Some other tumblr user had put a screencap of them and mentioned some parallel but I hadn't caught on since I hadn't seen the episode. I think it was smokey-liveblogs ? Feel free to correct me OP or anyone else who knows. I apologize if I am mistaken.
One thing I really liked was that the guys were free to express their feelings. Sokka's tears broke my heart. Poor baby, it feels as if the trauma from losing his mom, and Yue caught up to him...He probs wouldn't have survived losing Suki. Let's not talk abt Zuko, I have a very soft spot for sad abused kids.
Also, Azula's portrayal is probably one of the reasons some of us (me included, yea don't come for my head pls) keep on forgetting she's 14. The voice acting, the makeup, the smoothness...My girl coulda been some very influencial general or minister instead of Zuko's sister/ 2nd queen consort instead of Ozai's daughter and I wouldn't have questioned her abilities as a military strategist/politician. (And pls don't misunderstand, I am not pro Ozula or whatever, what I mean to say is that this little girl is so skilled she could have been a major adult villain and no questions would be asked lmao. Even now, many ppl think she is the older sister.) It's also very creepy...What kind of upbringing made Azula this manipulative ? While I have no doubts that Azula is very cunning and intelligent, I do not think that this level of manipulative prowess is normal for a small 14 yo, she literally caught the other smartest character in the show aka Sokka and grabbed him by the feels, and he does not strike me as a hothead (Zuko)/ Softie (Aang). The parallel is meant to show where she got it from (aka dear old genocidal phoenix papa).
I have already spoken about my own opinion on the Zuko/Ozai showdown. While most people find it -rightfully- cathartic, I personally feel it was not the smartest choice nor the most pragmatic. Aside from my own preferences, the writers could have avoided putting themselves in a tight spot with Zuko being able to kill Ozai and choosing not to "because destiny duh" then trying to convince Aang to do it, which many people -rightfully again- claim is non-sensical at best, hypocritical at worst, since Zuko is chill with calling for his death, though some think that seeing his demise as a necessary evil is not the same as killing him because he's still his father... I think that the confrontation would have been more interesting at the end of the series with a defeated Ozai instead. I would have loved it if Zuko decided to leave a letter and disappear to save Iroh/do stuff. Not only would it have avoided these writing "complications", but also it would have told us more about Zuko & Ozai's relationship indirectly. Would he care to open and read ? How much time would it take him to realize that Zuko peaced out of the palace lol ? What would have Zuko done had he left with Iroh or would they have gone separate ways ( Z with the Gaang/I with the white lotus)? Imagine my dude decided to join the invasion asap lol ? I am not sure as I am very new to this whole writing meta or whatever what this is considered to be, but I think that the main reason for this scene is probably to show the badassery of lightning redirection and "Iroh's teachings" finally getting through Zuko by having the very special technique he created saving his life from Ozai's abuse and generally horrible ways (imperialism, racism, genocide, child abuse, and so on...). It could have been replaced with something even more badass in my humble opinion : maybe him stopping combustion man with it and saving the Gaang's lives, Iroh's whole every nation/element matters coming full circle with him genuinely realizing the severity of his mistakes and protecting people of different nations from his country's march of genocide, the lightning being more than the symbol of the abuse he's been through, but all of FN's sins against its citizens and the other nations. I find this idea interesting in that it would have made Zuko's conflict and learning fit more into the grand scheme of things instead of an individual scale (he redirected lightning twice, once to save himself, and once to save Katara in canon, which is sometimes interpreted as a romantic gesture rather than a purely selfless one).
I didn't want to tackle the emotional impact of their confrontation because I feel it has been very largely touched upon by other very talented meta writers. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Again, going back to Toph and Sokka...Their wisdom is amazing. They may be children, but they are wise beyond their years. They stopped Aang from going to his own death. No, you weren't ready yet, sweetie pie. I love how they didn't lose faith despite their defeat. You can't save the world if you aren't very, very tenacious.I would have shipped Sokka x Toph if it weren't for the age gap and Suki's existence. 🙈
And...The water fam standing amidst of the bombings/chucking projectiles and planning...I wonder how this show was actually aimed at kids...Not easy to watch. I love how it absolutely captured the raw, vile brutality of war.
PS: Hakoda digging Katara's waterbending skills gave me life too, especially after seeing that episode where Pakku refused to teach her because she was a girl. And also, God I love healing, especially as a real life biological/medical science enthusiast. 🙈💖 *squeals* + Hakoda/Bato/the other adults being selfless and letting the kids escape as opposed to Ozai leaving Azula to fend off intruders...I'll never laud enough Hakoda's shielding his kids from the war.
PS 2: english is my 3rd language so I apologize for any strange sentence structures/incoherencies.
