Years before he was a Civil War hero and, eventually, President of the United States, Ulysses S. Grant was a young Army officer stationed in Detroit. From 1849-50, Ulysses lived with his wife, Julia, in this modest Greek Revival abode. The home was built in 1837 and originally located at 253 East Fort Street, between Rivard and Russell. That area would come to be known as Black Bottom, the fabled, predominantly African-American neighborhood that was razed to make way for the Lafayette Park development in the 1950s. In 1936, threatened with demolition, the Michigan Mutal Liability Company purchased the home and relocated to the now-former Michigan State Fairgrounds, where it was presented as a gift to the state. For decades, the Grant home was decorated in period furnishings and open to the public. However, since the Michigan State Fair ended its run at the State Fairgrounds in 2008, the historic structure sat in a state of neglect. In 2018, it was announced that the structure would yet again be moved, this time to the Eastern Market, close to its original location. In the summer of 2020, the landmarks was cut in half horizontally and relocated to the corner of Orleans and Wilkins streets, near the Dequindre Cut. Plans are to rehabilitate the home and transform it into an education/resource center. Donations to the project can be made at michiganhistory.org. #Detroit #Eastside #EasternMarket #BlackBottomDetroit #LafayettePark #GreekRevival #UlyssesSGrant #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #deserve2preserve #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #RawDetroit #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #MotorCityShooters #PureDetroit313 #DepictTheD #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #ThisPlaceMattersDetroit #MichiganPlacesMatter #SavingPlaces (at Eastern Market) https://www.instagram.com/p/CmrduvRLQBj/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Revival of Greece's Economy and Flourishing Tourism
Following a challenging decade of economic adversity, Greece has undergone a remarkable transformation in its financial landscape. The nation's woes began in 2008 when a debt crisis culminated in a state of bankruptcy. Seeking financial assistance, Greece turned to international organizations, primarily the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the European Central Bank (ECB), and the European Commission. However, these financial lifelines came attached with stringent conditions, necessitating the implementation of unpopular austerity measures and crucial economic reforms. These measures encompassed tax increases, reductions in public spending, and structural adjustments aimed at curbing the budget deficit and reinstating economic stability.
This turbulent period witnessed a decline in local incomes and pensions, leading to the closure of numerous enterprises as banks faced insolvency. By 2013, nearly a third of Greece's population grappled with unemployment, as the nation's financial crisis stemmed from years of unsustainable borrowing, excessive governmental expenditure, and a lack of fiscal discipline.
Since then, Moody's has characterized Greece's economic, financial, and banking landscape as undergoing a "profound structural transformation," with national insolvency yielding to rekindled investor confidence. While a greater number of individuals now enjoy employment with improved wages, the looming threat of inflation poses a substantial challenge to their quality of life. Furthermore, the benefits of austerity measures have been distributed unevenly, leaving some individuals still striving to recover from the closure of their ventures.
On a different note, multinational corporations like Microsoft, Pfizer, Cisco, JPMorgan, Meta, and other enterprises from the Americas, China, and Europe have significantly amplified their investments in Greece. Additionally, the tourism sector has played a pivotal role in the nation's economic resurgence. Greece's rich historical heritage, awe-inspiring landscapes, enchanting islands, and Mediterranean climate have established it as a highly coveted destination for global tourists.
Landmarks such as the Acropolis in Athens, the Palace of Knossos in Crete, and the archaeological site of Delphi have all captured the fascination of visitors. Greece boasts an impressive array of over 6,000 islands and islets, featuring iconic tourist destinations like Santorini, Mykonos, Rhodes, and Crete. These islands are renowned for their idyllic beaches, crystalline waters, and vibrant nocturnal offerings. Moreover, Greece has become a preferred stop for cruise ships, enabling tourists to explore multiple Greek islands in a single voyage.

1880 - Oliver House, Toledo, Ohio --- The Greek Revival Style Oliver House, located at 27 Broadway Street in Toledo, Ohio has quite the history as it still stands and operates today. --- Isaiah Rogers was the architect who designed the building, which was built by the William Oliver family who owned the land, as Oliver was one of Toledo's earliest real estate investors. --- The Oliver House overlooks the "Middlegrounds," and early site of railroad, immigration, and commercial activity. It opened in 1859 as Toledo's premier hotel. --- Isaiah Rogers, the architect, was known as the "father" of the modern hotel, as he revolutionized the hotel design with advances, such as water closets and mechanical call-buttons. --- The Oliver House was the last of Rogers' hotels in the U.S., and is listed on the National Register of Historical Places and Historic American Buildings Survey. --- Today it is home to Maumee Bay Brewing Co., and Rockwell's Steakhouse. --- https://www.thegenealogyinvestigator.com/time-travel-in-toledo-ohio --- #genealogytribe #thegenealogyinvestigator #genealogy #toledoohiohistory #toledohistory #toledoohio #historynerd #ancestry #familyhistory #oliverhouse #greekrevival #isaiahrogers #architecture #middlegrounds #maumeebaybrewingco #rockwellssteakhouse #hotels #waterclosets #callbuttons #broadwaystreettoledo https://www.instagram.com/p/Cg_6fIQuWx_/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Last part of this Greek Revival project. The customer saved this cabinet and wanted to feature it in the closet to her office. As it was in a corner it needed missing parts added and a base to sit on as well and being stripped and primed. The last picture shows how it started. #woodworking #finewoodworking #cabinetmaker #cabinetrestoration #hardwarerestoration #greekrevival https://www.instagram.com/p/CfZEBjUryyv/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

NEW PRESTON, CT
The Hill Church
First Ecclesiastical Society
New Preston, CT
1824.
This gorgeous stone church is not located in the town center of New Preston, rather ‘up the road, and a hill, a bit’ in a wonderful setting.
Across the street is the 18th stone house, originally a tavern and formerly owned by American fashion designer Bill Blass, now owned by Daniel Romaldez. The gardens were redesigned by @miranda.brooks.gardens which integrated the beautiful church into the design of the landscape.

This stately, well-preserved Greek Revival home at the corner of Moross Avenue and Church Street in Mount Clemens was built in 1835. It was built by Captain Sylvester F. Atwood, who commanded "Lady of the Lake", a ship that carried cargo by river from Detroit to Mt. Clemens. The home is believed to be not only the oldest in the city, but among the oldest in Macomb County. Originally located on Gratiot Avenue, it was purchased by Edgar Weeks, a United States Congressman, in the late 19th century and relocated to its current location, once part of the Moross farm. #MetroDetroit #MountClemens #MacombCounty #GreekRevival #Neoclassical #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #casasecasarios #houses_ofthe_world #beautifulhouseoldandnew #TheAmericanHome #houseportrait #BrickStory #PureMichigan #PureMittigan #VisitDetroit #Michiganders #ThisPlaceMatters #MichiganPlacesMatter (at Mount Clemens, Michigan) https://www.instagram.com/p/CQ6USsdDppu/?utm_medium=tumblr

In 1936 Robsjohn-Gibbings recreated an ancient Greek mosaic for the floor of his Madison Avenue showroom. His iconic klismos chair, now reproduced by Sedaris, was faithfully modeled after examples from antiquity, such as found on a c400 BC stela (second photo). #robsjohngibbings #greekrevival #neoclassical #antiquity #ancientrome #classicalgreece #classicalrevival #stela #klismos #mosaic #vintageclassic #americanchic #interiordesign https://www.instagram.com/p/B9Xn0QOJFD0/?igshid=jkgeh2ptpmw6

What's your favorite #architectural style found on #CapeCod? I'm a suckered for #greekrevival. This image connects the past to the present pulling the 19th century into the age of automobiles. People come for the sand, surf, and seafood, but one of the major contributions is the inherent beauty of the buildings that have managed to be preserved. Right across the street is a brick rendition of colonial revivalism, a Victorian, and a neo-classical just in this little stretch of Harwich Center. #depreciated #linguisticconcept #lyricdocumentary #documentaryphotography #architecturephotography #buildingdesign #columns #facade #porch #harwich #massachusetts #newengland #capecod #capecodinsta #capecodinstagram #capelife #capecodphotographer #capecodphotography #visitcapecod #visitma #visitmassachussetts #artuphoto (at Harwich Center) https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci-_uBRPjV4/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
