At least half a dozen times I've seen the exact same phrasing of "why would you want to ship a grandpa and a toddler" from antis talking about proshippers
Is this just the weirdest hypothetical ship dynamic they can think of? Or is there some unknown to me grandpa x toddler ship that's very popular in anti circles?

The first commission we got was a bit... Foolish. XD @jadpeanut wanted us to make a fake thumbnail with OG Grandpa Lou that any fan of @superbonusroundgames might get.
For those of you that don't get it, give this a watch. Then maybe subscribe to Super Bonus Round afterwards.

How to do a reboot injustice. (What Rugrats 2021 Has Taught Everyone)
Hello once again.
I come back on before the 2nd decade of my annual countdown to revisit a popular entry I did.
6 years ago with the reboot wave cresting, I took a look at what I now realize was its peak (with Animaniacs close behind)
DuckTales (WooHoo!)
How it encapsulates the old with bringing in the new.
Yet the wave despite it cresting San Andreas style still kept going. Although we did get some other great continuations with the notables being ICarly, Doogie KameAloha, Queer Eye, and Twilight Zone 2019. There is one that manages to undo so much in a short period.
Rugrats aired from 1991-2004 with its spin-off All Grown Up going until 2008. In it we saw the babies learn the lessons of life while in their own world and mindset.
Tumblr media
With 2 movies that saw the group expand and continue to grow.
But also a finale that just seemed more to fulfill a fanfic than tell what seemed to be building up as a well defined final chapter of a story.
No matter how much 4am pudding or baby doing what a baby has to do we got to see a crown jewel of Nickelodeon thrive.
Tumblr media
Until being overtaken by a certain cleanup item from underwater that is now like the energizer bunny.
But here is where this twists. Like the aforementioned SpongeBob spinoffs Paramount+ decided to bring back the babies into the modern era of the 2020s.
Now the main 5. Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, Lil and Angelica keep the same traits and wonder that was prevalent all those years ago.
Tumblr media
But our deep dive begins here as changes are made.
Beginning with the aging down of Susie Charmichael. Now no longer the foil of Angelica, she is placed into the playpen with the other 4 as she was intended to have been around the pickles since she was born. Sometimes this is good but she worked as a foil and wise older spirit, now she’s just another member.
Tumblr media
Taking her place age wise is Kimi, and although Chas still dates Kira now Kimi is mainly thrown in where Susie once was.
But the big stuff comes with the parents. And surly enough has been said about a certain person who has been written off.
But Howard DeVille deserved better. Especially considering the original that had him meek but caring parental wise. Especially with Betty being the strong willed maternal figure for Phil and Lil.
Also prevalent is Grandpa Lou, who goes from Golden age veteran to Middle Aged spirit.
Even the normal traits of Stu and Didi seem more like box checking than homage to a classic.
There is only so much of a reboot that can be twisted before it actually starts to harm the original’s legacy.
And with Rugrats here that is the case.
Tumblr media
Now is this a bad show. No the stories are still good. With the highlights being the recreations of classic moments in the preview shorts that came out before the release.
You have an iconic property that has been around 30 years and you just fit them into modern standards. When some were curious to know how those babies would have been if they had grown up into today.
Tommy being a director, Chuckie getting together with Susie and being a risk analyst. Phil doing his own Mike Rowe style look at Americana. Lil with her sense of determination inherited from her mom becoming an entrepreneur. Dil hosting his own podcast on SoundCloud and Spotify about the mundane and weird things in our world.
Tumblr media
Even Angelica getting over her upbringing to become an important figure in the world with a loyal duo of Kimi and Harold by her side running her day to day operations. That would have been far more interesting to see.
More so if they continued to stay close and have a next generation of their own to have their own adventures like they once did.
All that we could see glimpses of here potential for something better but bogged down in 2 things that play large into calling this injustice.
Familiarity and modernization.
(Note I have no issues with characterization here I’m just pointing things out as I see them.)
And I’ll see you all in November for the countdown.

Character ask: Angelica Pickles (Rugrats)
This is for the original series only, not for All Grown Up, Rugrats Preschool Daze, or the recent CGI reboot, which I've never seen.
Favorite thing about them: She's funny and sassy, and overall she's a great antagonist whom we love to hate and love seeing get her assorted comeuppances. Yet I also like that she has sympathetic moments now and then, which save her from being too hatable.
Also, she has the perfect little brat voice. Cheryl Chase is an expert at voicing little girls – both as Angelica and as Mei in the first English dub of My Neighbor Totoro, you'd almost think she was a real preschooler.
Least favorite thing about them: How mean and bratty she is. That probably goes without saying.
Three things I have in common with them:
*I'm an only child.
*My parents sometimes spoiled me when I was little.
*I love cookies.
Three things I don't have in common with them:
*I didn't bully younger kids as a preschooler.
*I'm not blonde.
*I've never owned a cat.
Favorite line:
From "Slumber Party," when Tommy asks her what a slumber party is:
"If you have to ask, you'll never know."
From "Rhinoceritis," when she brushes aside Chuckie's concern that her dad seemed mad at the chaos caused by her attempts to play doctor:
"That's 'cause he's threatened by working women."
From "Angelica's In Love," her uniquely childlike way of describing romantic heartbreak:
"I felt like a toy without batteries."
From "Toys in the Attic," her imitation of Boris and Minka's Yiddishisms at the end:
"Cable schmable! Who needs the cable when you got family by your side?"
And of course her catchphrase:
"You dumb babies!"
brOTP: Her cat Fluffy, and in her more sympathetic moments, the babies.
OTP: Maybe either Dean or Jean-Claude from "Angelica's in Love," but really she's too young for romance.
nOTP: Any adult.
Random headcanon: Just like Aunt Miriam and Grandpa Lou, she and Tommy will eventually talk out their differences as adults and become friends. Like Miriam, Angelica will admit that she only bullied Tommy because she was jealous of how much everyone liked him. Hopefully this will happen before they're in their 70s, though.
Unpopular opinion: Hmm... I haven't spent much time in the show's adult fandom, but apparently it's fairly popular to ship her with Chuckie when they're older. So I guess the fact that I don't ship them is my unpopular opinion.
Song I associate with them:
"Vacation" from the special A Rugrats Vacation, where the characters all go to Las Vegas.
youtube
Her version of "One Way or Another" from The Rugrats Movie.
youtube
And her mangled rendition of "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" ("My country, tears of thee/Sweet land of lizardy...") from the episode "Beauty Contest."
Favorite picture of them:

Daria’s Rugrats - Chapter 1 - Part 1
Nearly Four Years Later
Tommy's Birthday
11 June 1991
Daria awoke. She sat up in the bed, she then recalled that it was her brother's birthday. Or rather, adopted younger brother, but she rarely thought about that. Her current Mom and Dad were better than what she could remember of her biological Mom and Dad. 'Happy Birthday, Tommy,' she thought. She got up and got dressed.
Once dressed, she left her room. She could hear her parents in her brother's room, saying 'Happy Birthday'.
She went downstairs.
As she started breakfast, she could hear her parents talking about the day, particularly her father being enthusiastic about a toy he had made.
Her Mom placed Tommy in the high chair, and proceded to feed him. “Now, what does Lipschitz say, Stu. We need to distract him.”
That got Daria's attention. “You doin't need to distract him,” she said.
“Yes we do,” her mother said as she turned her attention back to Tommy. “OK, Tommy. Open the Pod bay door!'
Daria sighed. She was sure whatever Lipschitz recommended wasn't helpful at all. Tommy flinched.
“A little to the left, Stu,” her mother directed.
This time her father managed to get the food in Tommy's mouth.
“Stu, Daria, let's do the birthday checklist,” Didi directed, once Tommy had his breakfast.
“OK, Shoot,” Stu said.
“Um, carrot brand cake with health nuggets.”
“Check,” Stu said.
“Pin the tail on the Donkey.”
“The version with suction cups?” Daria asked rhetorically. “Check!”
“The puppet show?”
"Oh, yeah. Puppeteers, stage, props, and puppets arrive at eleven," Stu said.
“Perfect!” Didi said.
Daria sighed. She saw her grandfather approaching. “A puppet show for one-year-olds? Why, the little sprats aren't even gonna remember it!”
“It will make for good baby photo embarrasment opportunities,” Daria snarked.
“Daria!” Didi admonished.
“She makes a good point!” her grandfather said.
“Besides, do we want to be remembered as the family that settled for less?”
Betty DeVille rang the Pickles doorbell. The door opned. “Hi, Daria.”
“Hi, Mrs. Deville.”
“How are you, Daria?”
“I'm fine. Totally ready for Tommy's Birthday,” Daria answered. “How are Phil and Lill?”
“They're fine, but we also have little Chuckster,” Betty said.
Her husband, Howard moved aside allowing young Chuckie Finster to come forward.
“Hey, you think we could just pen these pups?” Betty asked.
“Over there,” Daria said. She bent down to Chuckie's level. “Hi, Chuckie.”
The red haired boy refused to make eye contact, instead lowering his gaze.
'To be expected,' Daria thought. She looked over to where her grandfather was complaining.
“Puppet show for one-year-olds? Why, when I was a spud, we didn't have puppet shows! "If we wanted entertainment, we went out back and pulled up stumps!”
“He's always, like that, don't worry,” she said to Chuckie. She stood up. “You know where it is,” she said to Mrs. DeVille.
“That I do.”
Chuckie and the twins joined Tommy in the playpen. The adults all ran outside chasing Spike, leaving Daria to watch them. (Except she continued reading a book she had been reading earlier.)
“I have one word to say to you,” Tommy said to his friends.
“What?” Phil and Lil asked at the same time.
“Dog food,” Tommy said.
“Dog food?” the twins asked.
“Dog food. I tried to get some from Spike's bowl, but Grandpa stopped me,” Tommy explained.
“Why would you want to eat that stuff?” Chuckie asked.
“Well, Spike eats it, and look at him!”
They looked out the window in the yard, where Spike was running around.
“He can do anything he wants to. He even gets to sleep in the flowers! Maybe, if we eat that dog food, we'll turn into dogs!" Tommy explained.
Lil watched Tommy's grandfather shoo Spike away from the flowerbed. “You mean we get to sleep in the flowers?”
Phil watched the dog lick Lou in the face. “And lick people?”
“And wear a collar with our names on it?” Lil added.
Chuckie saw Spike scratch himself. “I don't know. Maybe it's not such a good idea. Dogs don't have it so good. They always get fleas and junk.”
“Fleas? Let do it,” the twins proclaimed.
Didi came to the playpen. “Oh, I almost forgot to put on their little party hats!” she said.
“I still think that's a bad idea!” Daria objected. She sat down next to the playpen. “I don't like them either!” she said to Tommy.
“She's right,” Betty said. “They'll stay on for, oh, three minutes tops!”
“Get in the picture, Daria,” Didi said, gesturing with her camera.
Daria sighed and sat in the playpen. She put Tommy in her lap. “Like this?”
“Yes,” Didi said. She took the picture, as Tommy was beginning to squirm in Daria's grasp, Chuckie was backing away and the twins were showing signs of restlessness. “Done!”
“Good!” Daria grouched.
“Hey. Isn't it time to bust the pinata?” Betty asked.
“Let's wait until all the kids get here!” Didi said.
“Well, who's missing?” Betty asked.
“Daria and Tommy's cousin, Angelica,” Didi answered. She noticed Daria frowning at that.
“Oh, right, Angelica.”
