I have recently come across some claims that Goth is strictly a music subculture, and that if a person does not listen to goth music, they are not a *real* goth. I wanted to know your opinions on this, as someone with great knowledge on the gothic subculture and its history.
Sincerely,
A wee baby bat
AHAHAHAHAH oh G-D the never ending argument ... er, debate.
The short form of my opinion: Yes, the modern goth subculture sprung out of the postpunk music scene of the late 70s/early 80s. But part of the reason the subculture thrives to this day is that music scene went hand-in-hand with a specific aesthetic and artistic references.
And who is defining "goth music"? That umbrella term covers a LOT of sub-genres. There is no checklist of Bands You Must LIsten To In Order To Be Goth. (There isn't, I will fight those who say otherwise.)
So. The goth subculture is strongly tied to music, but that isn't the sole thing that defines the subculture.

It’s July 11th, meaning it is both Peter Murphy’s birthday and the anniversary of the release of Joy Division’s Substance, two important days in goth history.
Hell yeah, a bigass history of goth as reported by John Robb. He focuses on 1980s goth and its impact on music and culture but goes into the future a bit. All of the shit you want to read about by someone who was there.
January 17th, 1980, Tracy Pew, bassist of Australian goth band The Birthday Party, is arrested for drunk driving. His arrest prevented their concert with the San Franciscan hardcore punk band the Dead Kennedys (…a dream lineup!).
thus is a long shot but: im doing a project on goth fashion/culture (focus on fashion) in the 80s and need sources if anyone wants/can reccomend good ones 🙏
... and another thing about 90s goths and wardrobe ingenuity
We were devoted shoppers of those weird tiny import shops that were always in the 4 block area that also had the used bookstore, Tower Records, a comic shop, and a 2nd hand clothing store. The tiny import shop was a source of incense, essential oils for our perfumes, cheap silver (or silver-plated) jewelry, gauzy scarves, flowing gauzy skirts with interesting embroidery (and sometimes little mirrors along the hems!), and if you were really lucky, rayon velvet dresses that buttoned up the front.
I had one of those dresses, bought when I had a little extra money. I wore that thing to death. Over lace & cotton petticoats I made from thrift store curtains and tablecloths. Unbuttoned to the waist to show the layers of gauzy skirts. With thrift store belts and silver chains.
... I miss that type of store.

Rest In Peace you absolute messy (probably queer) literary icon. I hope you are partying with your husband and late daughter and conversing with Mary Shelley and Jim Morrison somewhere.
