friends at the table fans are absolutely the most insufferable type of fan. no question about it. we KNOW we're insufferable too, and very loud about it. the niche we have carved ourselves is too great. a PODCAST (hard media for people to get into) about playing ROLEPLAYING GAMES (weirdo nerd interest to get into) and not even the mainstream ttrpgs but the indie ones that 75% of the already niche weirdo subculture don't know about, and every season is about insane gay people and grappling with huge philosophical concepts and the world changing and also freaky weird shit like a guy who is all bees and mechs that keep you alive for a hundred years. and yet its the best media you could ever consume and you desperately need other people to talk to about it otherwise the little bugs in your brain will DIE. of course we'll fight a war with the shrek cats and be fucking insane about it. of course we will

buddy dawn fills me with such visceral anger and deep sadness because on one hand he’s how he his. he sees the people around him as sinners, most not even because of their actions but because they dont follow helio, he preaches to kristen about how “all lambs return to the pasture” and he tells her that, no actually, he’s never cast a spell or hurt someone, its helio doing it through him! which is also incredibly sad to me.

i grew up in the south and my town had 10-20 churches, i know that kid. he is an asshole, and he is an inch away from not seeing himself as a person if not for his god. because such a strong denial of his own autonomy doesnt start at not wanted to take accountability for his actions, it starts from being taught that without a god you would be nothing. idk man i know that kid, and its not likely that he’ll ever look at his religion and say, “hey wait, these are arbitrary rules that have been changed or forgotten over years of worship and does my god of the sun and corn really care enough about pre-marital sex to send me to hell.” buddy dawn probably never thinks about whether or not he’s happy in worshiping helio because how are you to turn your back on the god you’ve been taught to think works through you

Give me a potential AU and I'll tell you five facts about what would happen in a story

They all have very different types of magic that they use. Rinne is a very flashy and showy person and his magic very much reflects that. Niki's magic is more hesitant but it feels much more comforting, especially when combined with food. HiMERU's natural magic is very dark, though he has opted for something cold yet bright since taking on his persona. Kohaku has a very subtle magic but it's very powerful in its own way.

They still meet completely by accident. Rinne and Niki are traveling between towns and meet HiMERU and Kohaku who have been traveling together for a while at this point. Niki cooks them a meal with what provisions they have left and they offer to stick around, at least for a while since they seem to be heading in the same direction.

Rinne probably insists on taking odd jobs for the fun of it, though he has a keen eye for when something is more than meets the eye. He lets Kohaku pick a job once and warns him that it seems like it's more dangerous than it looks but Kohaku picked it because he knows it could have some really important information related to what he and HiMERU were contracted for.

This mission does end up being turned on its head and Rinne ends up using the magic he grew up learning, which is very defensive in nature and long thought to be a dead art, to protect the other three bees from a blow that would have otherwise been fatal. This is really the moment when the group decides they're in it for the long haul together. Rinne is more or less fine, but he does need some Niki cuddles to get better (this is a lie but Niki deals with it anyway).

It probably still takes some teeth pulling to get Kohaku and HiMERU to talk about why they were together in the first place, but it turns out Rinne and Niki were looking into the same thing for completely different reasons and they're all friends now so they should help each other out yeah? We'll find your brother and you'll help us restore Rinne's village or something. Haven't completely thought this point out but you get it.

I may just be delirious but I kind of feel like there's something there about some of the most traumatic events in Arakawa's life arguably stemming from/being made worse by being loved too much.

Like, Toshio's death, right. The death of a parent is always always going to be traumatic, particularly when your other parent is abusive, but I feel like being there, being the first to the scene, made it so much worse. Especially when it should've been a good memory.

Non-zero chance I'm just projecting because I was there for my own father's death and I was around Arakawa's age at the time, but it's like... it did have very specific life-long effects, didn't it... the way he keeps coming back to Peking duck and talks about it like he's had it before when he can't even bring himself to eat it unless he's with family (and indeed, never did, up until right before he died)...

And then there's his former patriarch. Of course, he seemed to see Arakawa as more of an object--fully under his control and something to be thrown away at the first sign of autonomy. But I feel like, before then, Arakawa must've been his "favorite," if he was willing to arrange a marriage between his daughter and Arakawa. Which I expect is what made his reaction when Arakawa told him he was (technically) having an affair with Akane and wanted out of the family that extreme in going as far as to send men after Akane and Ichiban.

The last one I can immediately think of is not exactly traumatic for him, though it is traumatic For Me so I'm counting it, but it's of course what we were talking about with Jo hesitating so much at the thought of killing Arakawa that he passed up the chance to save him.
