BORN ON THIS DAY:

Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire (née Spencer; 7 June 1757 – 30 March 1806), was an English aristocrat, socialite, political organiser, author, and activist.

Born into the Spencer family, married into the Cavendish family, she was the first wife of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, and the mother of the 6th Duke of Devonshire.

As the Duchess of Devonshire, she garnered much attention and fame in society during her lifetime.

With a preeminent position in the peerage of England, the Duchess was famous for her charisma, political influence, beauty, unusual marital arrangement, love affairs, and socializing.

She was notorious for her gambling addiction, leading to an immense debt.

She was the great-great-great-great aunt of Diana, Princess of Wales.

Their lives, centuries apart, have been compared in tragedy.

She was also a great-great-great-aunt of Elizabeth II by marriage through the queen's maternal grandmother.

On the 14 July 1775 Lady Mary Coke wrote in her journal:

Has Lady Greenwich told you of the Duchess of Devonshire, Lady Melburn, and Mrs. Damer all being drawn in one picture in the Characters of the three Witches in Macbeth? They have chosen that scene where they compose their Cauldron, but instead of ‘finger of Birth-strangled babe, etc.’ their Cauldron is composed of roses and carnations and I daresay they think their charms more irresistible than all the magick of the Witches.

The National Portrait Gallery writes of their copy; “The composition has no parallel in Gardner's oeuvre and it is assumed that either Damer or Melbourne suggested the design. Melbourne is also thought to have commissioned the work which has descended in her family.” In his biography on Anne Damer Jonathan David Gross notes; “The fact that the Melbourne family owned a copy of the portrait, rather than the more detailed painting, however, suggests that Anne was the likely originator and that Lady Melbourne received her copy as a gift.” However he notes that “Mary Coke’s journal suggests, at Lady Greenwich’s prompting, that the three young women dreamed up this monstrosity together.”

Trip to Chatsworth House

Today I was able to visit Chatsworth House to conduct more research surrounding my project. I decided that I would go and take photos as well as asking the tour guides for extra information that could be useful to me during unit 3.

Although it was quite a dismal day, due to the weather, I felt it quite elevated the beauty of the Chatsworth gardens, and I especially enjoyed the inside of the house as it was everything I had hoped it would be. The Georgian decorations within the house were truly beautiful.

Here are some of the photos I was able to take and that I will be printing off to use in my sketchbook;

I was also able to view the portrait of Georgiana which I was really looking forward to seeing in person.

Lady Georgiana Cavendish

1757-1806

Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, was one of the most charismatic figures in Georgian society. She was renowned for her style and her involvement in politics. She was the first wife of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire, and the mother of the 6th Duke of Devonshire.

Georgiana could indulge her passion for fashion, introducing the vogue for elaborate and tall hairstyles. She also loved gambling, and ran up huge debts over the course of her life. Her husband’s status meant that Georgiana could also be involved in political life. Although women could not vote, Georgiana was very well known and became a central advocate for the Whig Party.
