Beverly Jogs
I was following the discussion on a facebook group dedicated to the restoration of Colonial homes the other day, very deliberately avoiding preparing my syllabi for the new semester, when the term “Beverly jog” came up, and it was clear that a lot of people on the thread did not recognize it. That surprised me, but it might just be an eastern Massachusetts phrase. There might be other terms: I…

“glorification of an imagined unified Western Traditional Culture as the single objective best culture is a fascist red flag” and “a lot of modern vernacular architecture is boring, actively harmful to the mental health of people who live around it, destroying older buildings that had more personality, and shoddily built + as bland as possible for the ever profit-focused needs of capitalism” are concepts that can coexist
like. yes, be wary of Roman Statue Profile Pics decrying “modernity” on Twitter, but the idea that IKEAfying the world is somehow Progressive and if you don’t like it you MUST be far-right is just. bizarre

The Wentworth-Gardner House
We were in York Harbor all last week with family and friends, several of whom had never been to this region of New England before. So I was a bit of a tour guide, in my fashion. On a morning tour of Portsmouth, we passed by my favorite house in town, the Tobias Lear House, as well as its more famous neighbor, the Wentworth-Gardner House, one of the most famous Georgian structures in the country.…

Secluded 1720 Georgian home in London was further modified in 1750. Terretts Place is in a secluded courtyard and ‘blind alley’, discreetly sequestered behind shops and restaurants. Lit by a once-gas double lantern, it is an enchanting enclave of just 5 dwellings. Originally, it was a standalone house, but in the 19th century, houses were added on both sides, creating a terrace. 4 floors, 5bds, 3ba, £2,850,000 / $3.454M
Entrance hall. Wow, this is very original. It's good to see that no walls were knocked down and the wood is still intact.
Now, that's a Georgian fireplace and deep dental crown molding.
Lovely red second sitting room.
Isn't this kitchen amazing? The wide plank floor is original and there's a strip of tiles to protect it in front of the stove and sink. A modern farm sink and backsplash were added. A modern stove is in the original fireplace.
Elegant dining room.
You can tell that the stairs are original by the wear in the middle.
The bedrooms are on the 2 upper floors.
There's a bath on each upper floor. Look at the antique hardware on the door.
Bedroom #2. They're not very large, but they're cozy.
Stairs entering the 4th, and uppermost, floor.
This is nice, a larger, brighter bedroom.
The courtyard and garden in the back of the house.
Has a nice rose arbor.
Lovely yard just needs a little cleanup and trim.
