Good afternoon everybody! We'll it's a lazy Sunday so I'm going through my aqua parcels. Thought you might like some "behind the scenes" fun stuff!
Many steps are involved in gem identification even when purchasing from a trusted source. Regardless of where originally purchased, I PERSONALLY examine each loose gemstone thoroughly.
In addition to magnification and my Presidium dial gauge, which I use to measure the gems, I used a chelsea filter, dichroscope, refractometer, polariscope, and special lighting.
After identification, clarity, cut, color, and carat weight are established. The last step is to apply all of this to current price per carat evaluations and established a fair and highly competitive asking price. I subscribe annually to Gemval services, which I wholeheartedly recommend. Proportions (length to with ratio) is also a consideration, the overall make of the cutting, as well as the condition of facets (especially if the stone came out of an existing mounting).
The larger rectangular cushion cut aqua measures 18mm x 13.3mm x 9mm (13 carats!). It has very pleasing color, don't you think? I really prefer aquas that have a very slight greenish undertone.
The smaller aqua measures 12mm x 8.6mm x 6.2mm (4.38 carats). This one has a more desirable blue color and deeper saturation than the first one, but I still have a thing for the slightly greenish undertones of the first one.
For grading purposes, obviously I follow industry standards. But for purchasing for myself, I don't always go by those strict standards. I think its much more important to follow what you personally LOVE, and how the gem speaks to you! Both gems are very pretty though!

*raises hand* re: tanzanite being heat-treated... what does that mean?
Also, I never thought about jewelry not retaining speculative value. I suppose the whole "diamonds are a girl's best friend" thing makes it seem like that jewelry/gems are an investment/safety net.
Good question!
Now, let me preface this by saying: 95% of all colored gemstones on the market have had some manner of artificial treatment to make them more appealing. Generally speaking, this is a known quantity, and not something you need to be alarmed about.
By far the most common treatment (and it's attested in the archeological record, btw, so humans have known about this for a long time) is heat treating. You heat a mineral to a certain temperature for a given amount of time and sometimes the clarity will be improved, or the color will change or intensify. Courtesy of r/gems, here's a great side-by-side comparison of what most tanzanite looks like, before and after heat treatment:
Tumblr media
This isn't a scam and it isn't some big secret -- it's best to assume that any given colored stone has been heat treated unless you have an independent lab report from a reputable firm saying otherwise. No, a private appraisal isn't good enough. No, the jeweler's word isn't good enough either. Heat treatment is stable (i.e. permanent) and not discernible to the naked eye, so it's not something you as an average consumer needs to worry about. It's also not a value determinant in almost any stone. Nobody gives a crap if your amethyst is 'unheated'. Nobody cares. Don't get tricked into paying a premium for it.
The majority of tanzanite is reddish-brown when it comes out of the ground, and only after heating do its lovely blue-violet tones show.
For your second question, while diamonds do retain more of their value, speaking very generally, than almost any colored stone, the speculative value of gemstones bought at retail is, like most things, effectively nil. Buy things because you love them, not because you're hoping someone will pay you more for them later -- the late capitalist need to turn every blessed thing on the planet into a casino chip is what turns people into motherfucking Daleks.

Alexandrite
Tumblr media
Did you know?
That Alexandrite is a mineral that can change color depending on different light sources.
The term Alexandrite came from Emperor Alexandria ii.
Alexandrite that comes from the Ural Mountains of Russia is colored green in daylight to red in incandescent light.
Tumblr media
Other varieties of alexandrite may be yellowish or pink in daylight and a columbine or raspberry red by incandescent light.
Tumblr media
This chameleon-like color shift is the result of its uncommon chemical composition which includes traces of chromium, the same coloring agent found in emerald. The unlikelihood of these elements combining under the right conditions makes alexandrite one of the rarest and most expensive gemstones on Earth.
The alexandrite mined from Russia’s famed deposits set the quality standard for this gemstone. Today, most alexandrite comes from Sri Lanka, Brazil, and East Africa, generally paling in comparison to the vivid colors of Russian gemstones.
With a hardness of 8.5 on the Mohs scale, alexandrite is softer than sapphire and harder than garnet—the other gemstones that can change color. However, due to its scarcity, alexandrite is more valuable than most gemstones, including rubies and diamonds.

Is there a gem that is particularly overrated, in your opinion?
Oh boy, yes indeed. Lemme tell you a little story about Tanzanite.
Tanzanite is a blue-violet variety of the mineral zoisite. It's gorgeous, not gonna lie:
Tumblr media
HOWEVER, because it only comes from a small mining area in Tanzania, it's been oversold for decades as an 'investment' stone, when the fact is, there's tons of the stuff, and the overwhelming majority of it is heat-treated. It has no investor value whatsoever. Also it's soft and brittle, so it's not great for rings. You see a lot of watery, lavender-colored tanzanite being sold on cruise ships and it's inevitably sold as "it will be really valuable someday."
Folks, my literal job is to assess items for sale on the secondary market, and let me tell you: jewelry is an investment in your presentation. An investment in your wardrobe. Maybe an investment in your relationship. But it does not, and almost never will, have a speculative value. If anyone is trying to sell you jewelry on the basis of it retaining or even gaining value, run.
Also stop buying tanzanite rings. You're just asking for heartache.
