Danmei and Baihe C Novels and Manhua Officially Licensed in English

Things are getting licensed fast enough that keeping a list like this up-to-date is basically impossible, but I saw someone asking in the tags so I figured I'd try. All titles are danmei unless otherwise noted (very little baihe is licensed so far). I've included Chinese titles and linked novelupdates for each title when I was able to find them, but sometimes publishers change the original titles so much that I can't track them down, apologies.

Basically: this is everything I know of as of May 7, 2024. There might be more. I tried.

For the latest danmei news, Danmeinews.com is a great resources.

Note that some of this information was sourced from this Carrd, last updated in March 2023.

There is a list of danmei with official licenses on NovelUpdates, and a similar list on Goodreads. Both look fairly up to date to me. Here's another danmei-specific list on Reddit that to my eye looks accurate for the larger publishers but isn't thorough for some of the smaller ones.

There are a handful of titles I know of that are official translations of C Novels, where the C Novels aren't danmei or baihe but are often treated as adjacent within fandom (as in: I've seen people shipping characters from them, lol). I've included two above under the entry for titles from Aloha Comics (Link Click and Nirvana in Fire) and here are a couple others I currently know of:

The Grave Robbers' Chronicles (Daomu Biji) by Nanpai Sanshu (six volumes are available in English from Things Asian Press

The Legend of the Condor Heroes (She Diao Yingxiong Chuan) by Jin Yong from St. Martin's Press

Romance of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguo Yanyi), attributed to Luo Guanzhong, available in multiple translations

The Seven Heroes and Five Gallants (Zonglie Xiayi Chuan), attributed to Shi Yukun, there are two translations to English listed at the linked Wikipedia page

Note that to the best of my knowledge both of these are considered very substandard translations. I've personally read the official DMBJ translations and... yeah... and I've heard the LOCH translation is also mediocre.

I will add to the "Honorable Mentions" list if I find any other more mainstream titles with official translations.

Please don't come at me for including a couple classics. The characters shippable, what can I do? I've written fic for Romance of the Three Kingdoms...

A handful of other licenses are mentioned on the Carrd I linked at the beginning of this post; I have no idea the status of those titles and wasn't able to find information on them while putting together this post other than what was listed on that Carrd, so I've omitted them.

As a final note, I've personally purchased from every printer on this list EXCEPT Monogatari Novels (I'm holding off because of the controversy and will see how things play out) and Chaleuria (which I vaguely knew existed but nothing beyond that).

Seven Seas translation varies but the editing is general strong and the editions are sturdy and nice. Extras that have come with final volumes are lovely. I am buying literally everything they publish except for You've Got Mail, due to information about the author that was shared with me that the author is a transphobe. Note that Kinnporsche by Daemi is not danmei as it's Thai (and I've heard unsavory things about the author - I don't have a link for that as the information was shared with me on Discord, and I encourage you to do your own research rather than taking my word for it). No judgement if you make a different choice than me, to be clear, I'm just sharing the information I have and why I personally am not buying the books). Note that Seven Seas isn't without controversy, especially for treating their contractors poorly resulting in them unionizing. Some people have also been unhappy with the fidelity of their translations compared to the original Chinese (I've been satisfied personally but ymmv).

Peach Flower House has inconsistent inconsistent editing quality, but the books are very readable, and I'm excited that they're working with translators such as E. Danglars. I haven't bought any of their special editions so can't speak to their extras, but I've bought all their print translations and will continue to do so going forward.

I just got my first title from Via Lactea last week and finished reading it on Sunday, and the translation read very well and there were minimal errors. It also came with a bundle of cute extras, which I wasn't expecting and pleased, and writing this post has caused me to cave and spend $150 to buy the rest of their books. Thank you, tax refund. (Should I spend this money? No. Did I anyway? ...)

No Rosmei titles have actually shipped yet, so I can't speak to their quality, though the previews they've shared on social media (as outlined here, for example) read decently and I'm optimistic. The cover art is also lovely, and they've been communicative and responsive, for example they've already issued a statement related to a recent controversy over perceived poor marketing for At the World's Mercy.

Tl:dr, the above is absolutely everything I personally know about mlm and wlw Chinese novels and manhua that have been licensed for English publication. I hope it helps someone.

wait.. i’m literally on here or weibo almost 24/7 ( as you can tell lol ) but I feel like i missed something. i’m seeing clowning related to xz’s photos and how it looks like he is a groom and it’s a wedding photoshoot. the place is also famous for wedding shoots ( allegedly, idk. i’m not from there ) so turtles are imagining again. lol. freakin coincidence that wyb’s GRA photoshoot was done at a wedding shop. plus the “wedding outfits” for weibo night. which is all clowning and galaxy braining.🌌

now, we’re joking around, like where’s yibo? he should be taking photos with his partner.

then i see comments that there is this one song WYB recently listened to. meaning, as recent as when XZ flew to singapore which is called 超人不会飞 (superman can’t fly) by Jay Chou. i know WYB and everyone else is a big fan of Jay Chou but the clowning comes from the timing of when he listened to it. let me get to that first.

turtles are interpreting it as WYB longing to “fly” to where XZ is and be with him but he can’t because of all his work commitments. he wants to take a breather. thinking about what his life is and the constraints, and at times like this, when they spent days in Beijing, but now they have to be apart, it affects him even more.

however when i read the lyrics, it could also be because he can relate to what jay chou is singing about. here’s the english translation i found here. i have bolded the ones i felt like WYB relates too. literally no need for explanation. just read it. It fits with his status in life so much that it’s almost scary.

I don’t think there is anything wrong with how cpfs are relating this to cpn cause that’s just how it is. But sometimes, there are other reasons why they do what they do.

SO MY CONFUSION COMES FROM HOW THE HELL DO PEOPLE KNOW WHAT HE RECENTLY LISTENED TO. I can’t seem to dig up how or maybe it’s something we don’t talk about. I have never experienced this kind of tidbit related to them before so I wanna know the source. Or is this like the gaming cpn where certain people know and they will not divulge the boy’s account for privacy? if anyone knows, feel free to comment. If i find out in the future, I will share.

In which I over-engineer my baihe tbr list for the next month or so.

Traitors' End (诛佞) by Liu Yuan Chang Ning (流鸢长凝). Gu Qingtang time-travels back into the past, and gets caught up in a complicated web of honour, debt and gratitude. She becomes prince consort to Princess Yin Ning, who tries to stab her on their wedding night.

Summary:

Yu Sheng (鱼生) or Yusang in Cantonese, meaning “raw fish” in Chinese, is a salad dish comprising thinly slicesd raw fish and various seasonings that are mixed together as diners toss the ingredients. It is a dish usually eaten during Chinese New Year. Traditionally a simple dish with few ingredients, the yusheng recipe has evolved over the decades and now comprises a wide variety of ingredients. Our second yusheng for this Lunar New Year is a small serving of Grand Fortune Abalone Yusheng (S$49.90++) from White Restaurant. In line with the coming Year of The Rabbit, this yusheng comes with an auspicious rabbit ornament.

Today, the common form of yusheng is the 七彩鱼生 (Seven-coloured Raw Fish salad) served in local restaurants during the Chinese New Year period. Also referred to as 发财鱼生 (Prosperity Raw Fish Salad) or 新年鱼生 (Chinese New Year Raw Fish Salad), this colourful take on yusheng was said to be created in the 1960s by chefs Lau Yoke Pui, Tham Yui Kai, Sin Leong and Hooi Kok Wai, together known as the “Four Heavenly Kings” in the Singapore restaurant scene.

The ritual of eating yusheng during Chinese New Year involves all the people at the table tossing the salad and uttering auspicious phrases. The dish is deemed auspicious because of the homonymic meanings behind its ingredients, which suggest blessings and good fortune for the new year: 鱼(Yu) is a homonym for “fish” and “abundance”, while 生 (Sheng) means both “raw” and “life”. Together, yusheng implies “abundance of wealth and long life”. In the Cantonese dialect, the dish is known as 捞起 (Lo Hei), where “lo” implies “tossing up good fortune” and 起 (Hei) means “to rise”, again a reference to a prosperous business and thus its popularity with businessmen during the new year celebrations. The ingredients of yusheng vary among restaurants, and one such recipe is presented below along with examples of auspicious phrases that may be uttered as each ingredient is added.

Step 1: All at the table offer auspicious greetings.

Words: 恭喜发财 (Gong Xi Fa Cai - Wishing you wealth and good fortune) or 万事如意 (Wan Shi Ru Yi - May all your wishes be fulfilled).

Step 2: Add fish, which symbolises abundance or excess through the year.

Words: 年年有余 (Nian Nian You Yu)

Step 3: Add pomelo over the fish for luck and auspicious value.

Words: 大吉大利 (Da Ji Da Li)

Then dash pepper over the ingredients for greater prosperity and fortune.

Words: 招财进宝 (Zhao Cai Jin Bao)

Pour oil, circling the ingredients to symbolise the multi-fold increase of profits and to encourage money to flow in from all directions.

Words: 一本万利 (Yi Ben Wan Li) and 财源广进 (Cai Yuan Guang Jin)

Step 4: Add carrots to the fish, indicating blessings of good luck.

Words: 鸿运当头 (Hong Yun Dang Tou)

Then place shredded green radish on the fish, symbolising eternal youth.

Words: 青春常驻 (Qing Chun Chang Zhu)

Next, add shredded white radish for prosperity in business and promotion at work.

Words: 风生水起 (Feng Sheng Shui Qi) and 步步高升 (Bu Bu Gao Sheng)

Step 5: Add condiments. First, sprinkle peanut crumbs on the dish, symbolising a household filled with gold and silver. As an icon of longevity, peanuts also symbolise eternal youth.

Words: 金银满屋 (Jin Yin Man Wu)

Sesame seeds follow, symbolising growth in business.

Words: 生意兴隆 (Sheng Yi Xing Long)

Add deep-fried flour crisps in the shape of golden pillows, with wishes that literally translate to mean that the whole floor would be filled with gold.

Words: 遍地黄金 (Bian Di Huang Jin)

Step 6: All at the table stand up and toss the salad an auspicious seven times with loud shouts of Lo Hei (捞起) and other new year wishes.

Action: Mix ingredients by pushing them towards the centre, which is an encouragement to push on the good luck to all at the table. Some may lift clumps of the salad as high as possible to symbolise the increase in good fortune.

This Yu Sheng (鱼生) only came with five small pieces of abalones so we enhanced it with an additional can of baby abalones. When we are ready to toss, we found out that the restaurant had mistakenly given us two containers of oil instead of one oil and one yuzu sauce. Without the sauce, there is no sweetness, so sis quickly juiced a couple of Mandarin oranges to replace the forgotten sweet sauce. Overall, not a satisfying eat due to the lack of a crucial condiment.

Biography of Xue Cheng (ZS38)

[He grew up in the south but later moved north, and served Houmochen Yue and then Yuwen Tai and the court at Chang'an.

Also a quite involved description of Emperor Wen of Western Wei's tipping vessels.]

Xue Cheng, courtesy name Jingyou, was a native of Fenyin in Hedong. His great grandfather Hongchang on encountering the chaos of Helian led his kinsmen to move away to Xiangyang. Cheng mourned his father at a young age. The family was impoverished and he personally ploughed [the fields] to support his grandmother, [but] if he had some leisure time, he read writings and records. At the time people were not yet amazed by him.

When Outside the Jiang [i.e. the southern realm] selected people, they very much considered families with generations [of service]. Cheng, since he was a migrated lodger, was not being picked up and employed. However, he relied on his talent to show his spirit, and not once chased after the gates of those with generations of benefice.

The Commander of the Central Gentlemen of the Left, Wei Qiandu of Jingzhao, spoke to Cheng, saying:

My lord's gates and lands are not inferior, and [your] personal talent is not lacking. Why does not Cheng rely on frequent visits to the personnel section?

Cheng said:

“Those with generations of birthright climb to high positions, the gallant and capable sink downto lowly companions.” The ancients considered it lamentable. [I] take the liberty of not yet being able to do it.

Qiandu announced to people, saying:

This one is young in years [but] extremely desolate and defiant. It is only that he has not come across the [right] time, and that is all.

Middle of Xiaochang [525 – 528], he took his staff and switch and returned to Luoyang. Before this, Cheng's granduncle Zhendu, together with his clansman Andu, took hold of Xu and Yan, and reverted to Wei. His son Huaijun saw Cheng, and they very much became friendly and on good terms with each other.

During Erzho Rong's deposing and installing [the emperor], he thereupon turned back to Hedong and halted at Huaijun's house. He did not interact with human beings, but the whole day read books, copied and summarized them in his own hands, having in hand two hundred scrolls. Indeed, the commandery warden, Yuan Xi, had at the time been inviting and soliciting him, treating him with equal courtesy. Huaijun always said:

You have returned to your home village, but do not make designs for producing a legacy, and do not assent to take a wife. Do [you] intend to go south again?

Cheng likewise contentedly secluded himself and did not change his habits. Middle of Putai [531 AD], he was designated Servant in Affairs-at-Centre, concurrently General who Cowes the Waves.

When Shenwu of Qi raised troops, Cheng then went east to roam within Chen and Liang. He spoke to his clansman Xiaotong, saying:

Gao Huan depends on troops to infringe on the Sovereign. Destruction and chaos will soon begin. Guanzhong is a land of superlative shape, surely there will be a hegemon king living there.

Therefore he and Xiaotong travelled together to Chang'an. Hoomochen Yue¤ heard about him, and summoned him to be Gentleman-at-Centre to the Acting Tribunal, with appointment as General who Quells the Distant and Colonel of Infantry. When Yue¤ murdered Heba Yue, all the people of the army congratulated and encourage each other. Cheng alone spoke to those close to him, saying:

Yue¤'s talents and strategies are basically few, and he wilfully murdered a good general. In the affairs of defeat and destruction, his then are not far off. We now forthwith will be made prisoners, what is there to congratulate and encourage!

Those who heard considered Cheng's words to be true, and therefore had a troubled appearance. Soon after Taziu pacified Yue¤, he pulled in Cheng to be Army Advisor of the Records Chamber.

When Xiaowu of Wei moved west, he was granted General who Conquers the Villains and Central Unassigned Grandee, and ennobled Baron of Xiayang county with an estate of 200 households. When Emperor Wen of Wei was enthroned, he was designated Attendant Gentleman of the Palace Writers, promoted General who Calms the East, got added to this estate 100 households, and advanced in feudal rank to be an Earl.

4th Year of Datong [538 AD], the Xuanguang [“Spreading Brillaince”] and Qinghui [“Pure Beauty”?] Halls were completed, and Cheng made a hymn for them. Emperor Wen of Wei also built two tipping vessels.

One of them had two transcendents who together held a single alms bow and placed together on a single plate. On the bowl lid there was a mountain, and the mountain had a fragrant air. One transcendent also held a metal pitcher which overlooked the top of the vessel. By using water to pour on the mountain, which then set out out into the pitcher and then gushed into the vessel, smoke and steam passed through and issued from within the mountain. It was spoken of as the Transcendent Tipping Vessel.

One of them had two lotus leaves [?] placed together on a single plate, their distance from each other a full chi, and in the middle of them there was a lotus seed hanging down above the vessel [?]. By using water to gush onto the leaves, which then set out onto the seed and flowed into the vessel. There were wild ducks and toads as decorations on it. It was spoken of as the Water Lily Tipping Vessel.

The two plates were each placed on a single couch, the bowl was round but the couch was square. In the middle there was a person, the image of telling the Three Qualities. Everything was set up in front of the Qinghui Hall. The vessels' shape resembled gong觥 pitchers but square. If they were full, they were level, and if overflown, they tipped over. Cheng made a hymn for each of them.

Beginning of Datong [535 – 551], the ceremonial regulations had many shortcomings. Taizu made Cheng, together with Lu Bian, Tan Zhu, and others assist in settling them. He himself, due to the roaming and partings in generations past, did not listen to tones or music. Even in secluded rooms and solitary places, he regularly had an anxious appearance. Later he was incriminated in an affair and died. His son Shu inherited. His office reached Lower Grandee of the Ritual Section, Ceremonies Similar Great General, and Diplomatic Envoy Deputy.

US Brinksmanship Over Debt Ceiling Sparks Global Concerns

After US President Joe Biden and congressional leaders failed to make any breakthrough on the issue of raising the US government's debt ceiling during a closely watched meeting on Tuesday, concerns are growing over what has been described as "catastrophic" impact on both the US and global economies if the US defaults on its obligations.

If the debt ceiling is not raised, the US government could fail to pay its bills starting as early as June 1, and defaults on US debt could lead to a recession in the US and severe consequences for the global economy, US officials and analysts warned. While US officials often reach a deal at the last minute, brinksmanship over the issue could still send jitters through global financial markets, analysts noted.

For China, while downward pressure remains on economic growth as some recent indicators have showed, the pace of recovery remains solid and the Chinese economy will be resilient enough to cope with any potential uncertainty, analysts said, with some arguing that the US' brinksmanship could accelerate de-dollarization and help boost the yuan's internationalization.

Default Risks

Biden met with congressional leaders, including Kevin McCarthy, a Republican lawmaker and speaker of the US House of Representatives, to discuss the debt ceiling issue, but the two sides apparently remain at loggerheads. Following the meeting, Biden said that the "politics, posturing and gamesmanship" will continue in the coming weeks, although he described the meeting as "productive," adding that defaultis "not an option." Meanwhile, McCarthy said, "I didn't see any new movement," as AP News reported.

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen warned that the US government could run short of cash by June 1. As that deadline is rapidly approaching, concerns are growing that US leaders will not be able to reach a deal on the debt ceiling soon enough to avoid potential damages. The White House has warned that a US default could lead to an economic recession. Yellen has also been reaching out to US business leaders to "explain the 'catastrophic' impact a US default on its debt would have on the US and global economies," Reuters reported on Monday. Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Biden said on Tuesday that it was possible he could postpone a trip to Japan and Australia to stay in Washington for the negotiations.

The debt ceiling issue has become a tool for partisan fights between the two main political parties of the US, and repeated fights over the issue have brought great uncertainty to markets, said Gao Lingyun, an expert at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences in Beijing.

Though US leaders will likely reach a deal in the end, "the result will come at the cost of US citizens and those of other countries," Gao told the Global Times on Wednesday, noting that raising the debt ceiling will mean "diluted" holdings by US and global holders as well as increased debt for the US government. "This US practice is unsustainable."

The US has changed its debt ceiling more than 100 times since World War II, and while the two US political parties often fight over the debt ceiling, they often reach a deal to avert a US default. However, even if a US default is averted, merely getting close to the deadline often causes serious financial repercussions. In 2011, a protracted fight over the issue prompted US ratings agency Standard & Poor's to downgrade the US' credit rating for the first time, sending global financial markets down significantly.

Currently, while many anticipate a deal on the debt ceiling before the deadline, the US economy is already facing great uncertainty, including a crisis in its regional banks, analysts noted.

"Changes in the aftermath of the banking crisis remain uncertain, which is an unstable factor for the recovery of the global economy, and the market cannot read the direction of the US dollar," Hu Qimu, deputy secretary general of the digital real economies integration Forum 50, told the Global Times on Wednesday.

De-dollarization

Hu said that given such uncertainty, many economies around the world need to find safe havens to reduce reliance on the US dollar and the disruptions caused by risks in the US. The partisan fight over the debt ceiling issue "could bring some opportunities for the yuan's internationalization and de-dollarization," he said.

As the US government continues to weaponize its dollar hegemony to sanction other countries and the US economy faces growing risks, many economies have moved to reduce reliance on the US dollar and some have switched to the Chinese yuan or other currencies for settlement.

"After experiencing the crisis in 2008 and the impact of various malign US actions on countries in recent years, this time is an opportunity for countries to push for de-dollarization," Hu said.

While China's economy also faces growing downward pressure due to shrinking external demand, the country's economic recovery this year is still widely expected to be a bright spot in the otherwise grim global economic outlook.

Official data showed on Wednesday that China's imports fell 7.9 percent in April, while exports grew 8.5 percent, slower than the 14.8 percent growth in March. The data prompted some foreign pundits to hype concerns over China's economic outlook.

However, Chinese analysts noted that weakening external demand is the reason and other growth drivers such as consumption and investment will likely help the world's second-largest economy to rebound steadily.

"Using the monthly trade data to badmouth China's economy is unconvincing. Among the three main growth drivers of the Chinese economy, foreign trade only accounts for about 20 percent," Hu said.

Meanwhile, Chinese officials are moving swiftly to take measures to stabilize growth, including support measures for the trade sector and consumption. A meeting of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee on April 28 noted that work should be coordinated to ensure sustained economic growth, boost the dynamism of the economy, improve social expectations, and prevent and defuse risks and hidden dangers, according to Xinhua.
