Have you read the last post of GRRM in Not A Blog? He wrote this:
That was all back in 2022, but very little has changed since then.   If anything, things have gotten worse.   Everywhere you look, there are more screenwriters and producers eager to take great stories and “make them their own.”   It does not seem to matter whether the source material was written by Stan Lee, Charles Dickens, Ian Fleming, Roald Dahl, Ursula K. Le Guin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Mark Twain, Raymond Chandler, Jane Austen, or… well, anyone.   No matter how major a writer it is, no matter how great the book, there always seems to be someone on hand who thinks he can do better, eager to take the story and “improve” on it.   “The book is the book, the film is the film,” they will tell you, as if they were saying something profound.   Then they make the story their own. They never make it better, though.   Nine hundred ninety-nine times out of a thousand, they make it worse. Once in a while, though, we do get a really good adaptation of a really good book, and when that happens , it deserves applause. I can came across one of those instances recently, when I binged the new FX version of SHOGUN.
Seems he is pissed at HBO?
Yeah, he was good at pretending he didn't mind the changes in GOT, but I remember reading that before the series, he had a lot of people come to him and propose how they would adapt the books, sometimes only focusing in Jon, or Dany, and he didn't like those ideas because they weren't taking into account they were not the only main characters. He was also against adapting his books because he knew the technology wasn't good and wouldn't be a good production.
With GOT, he defended the differences, but in the latest post you can read between the lines how dissappointed he was with the adaptation of his books.
I mean, he could have said that before SHOGUN he was fine with GOT (or HOTD), right? I imagine he doesn't mention them because... well, he prefers to be part of the writers and try to save some of his ideas, and you want to have a good environment, is better if you don't criticize them, right?
Whoa. That is not a subtle dig, isn't it?
He makes no mention of HOTD or GOT but the sheer omission itself seems incredibly damning to me.

Last Voyage Of The Demeter
It's honestly a bit of a wonder that nobody has done something like this before. The doomed voyage of The Demeter is a small piece of the overall story, but it is very much a story within the story, and even though the ending is a bummer and kind of a given, there are enough turns there to make a decent horror movie and at least one very memorable character in the form of The Demeter's captain whose final middle finger to his Transylvanian passenger is pretty iconic
Anyway, I was pretty excited to watch this movie, partially because I'm re-experiencing Dracula along with the rest of the world through Dracula Daily and partially because the director is Andre Øverdal, whose career I've been gleefully paying attention to since Troll Hunter in 2010 and, perhaps more salient to this movie, the locked room chiller The Autopsy of Jane Doe.
As for the results, it was certainly a decent attempt. From an adaptation standpoint, it was a mixed bag. While some choices were unexpected but decidedly sensical, like the decision to use less of the Debonaire and Devilish Dracula and more of the Fucked Up Man-Bat Dracula, others I didn't love but understood, like doing the "vampires and thralls burn like hell at the slightest brush of sunlight" thing. Some choices, however, did feel like they were motivated by a series of studio notes. One such presumably noteborn idea is having the landlubber characters of Mr. Clemens and Anna taking the lead on the whole thing, one presumes to not spend too much time with salty sailors in this salty sailors having a bad time movie.
Other decisions still seem more like Øverdal seeing what he could get away with, like including a child in this doomed journey for no other apparent reason than to tell the moviegoing public he isn't afraid to put some child murder on screen. As far as transgressiveness goes it's not paradigm-shatteringly huge, but he'll get some point for having me wonder if he's actually going through with this child peril business.
In general, the horror in this movie works decently, although I do feel we're given too much of Dracula's gnarly ass too early. I know references to the shark basically not being in 75% of Jaws are practically a cliche at this point, but it keeps being harped on because it works and so many horror movies forget that no matter how good your FX is, it's nothing to the power of growing paranoia. Granted, Drac has a few tricks up his fleshy sleeves to save for the finale, and seeing those tricks unfurl it's pretty rad, but I would be happy with sacrificing some screentime from the feature character for some tension-building.
From a cinematography standpoint, the movie works fine. Some of the day-for-night-looking business in the third act does strain the suspension of disbelief a tad, but I appreciate the effort put into a movie that is for the most part perceivable to the eye in a generation where more and more horror movie ADs seemingly go "It's dark, because dark is scary, right?" without thinking much on the people who try to watch the thing.
When we are talking aesthetics though, I would say Demeter's biggest sin is choosing to give the Count's blood draining the most comically overstated Glugg Glugg-noise I have heard outside of depictions of thirsty Looney Tunes drinking water. Like, I get using sounds the audience might be familiar with as a base, but when I expect your very scary horror villain to eventually tilt his head back and go "Ahhhh" then it might be time to reconsider.
So in short, I wouldn't call Last Voyage of The Demeter an instant classic or anything, but it's entertainingly pulpy gorefest of the kind late summer is made for in my opinion. I could have done with more gore actually, but it could be that the two new Evil Dead movies have desensitized me somewhat. Also, you know what they say, Waste Not, Want Not.

ohh, that's too bad about your computer not being able to play dreamlight valley! i have heard that the game is supposed to have a mobile version, but i'm not sure if it's been released yet or not, so that could be something to look into. also, i can totally see that about tarzan wanting to dive right in and learn about everything around him. i'm sure that if jane were there with him she'd also be really excited to show him new things and help him with anything he didn't understand. oof, yeah, i didn't wanna be too harsh about wish in case you were still really looking forward to the movie, but i admit that my mixed feelings about it are more on the negative side. i like a couple of the songs, but they're riddled with strange and poorly written lyrics (for example, "i'm a star, watch out world here i are" or "i let you live here for free and i don't even charge rent") and some of them sound so generic that i just feel like i've already heard them before. after seeing the concept art and hearing about some of the ideas that didn't make it in, i ended up feeling like the movie had a lot of missed potential. it's a shame, especially since this was disney's 100th anniversary film. there is one other tarzan reference besides the shoutout in the credits, though, so definitely look out for that when you watch it! that's true about mark mancina, i see a lot of praise for tarzan's soundtrack that's specifically about phil collins, but mark created such a good score to go with his work. i'm really glad he got to work on moana as well. ooh i see, that does all sound pretty interesting! i love to read as well and pretty much always have a long list of things i'd like to read, and never enough time for all of them LOL. but i'll definitely have to add the tarzan novels to that list and try to check them out someday. are there any other tarzan movies you enjoy besides disney's version? -🌟
I looked, and is is available through Apple Arcade… but same problem, don't have a compatible device, lol. Not into computers/phones/etc enough to try and keep up with the latest. Would rather stretch my devices as long as I can and save the money for my collection. Oh well, maybe someday I'll play it. Would be so awesome to see more of Jane helping Tarzan learn new things though!
I agree with you on the lyrics, some of them are so bad!! I remember hearing those lines for the first time and feeling embarrassed for them. They sound like they're from a cheap bootleg ripoff, not from the most prestigious animation company in the world. They should be ashamed of themselves, they used to have incredible song lyrics.
That's awesome there's one other Tarzan reference though!! A very good reason to give it a watch!
Mark's score for Tarzan and Brother Bear are so beautiful. As soon as I saw he was doing Moana I knew I was going to love it!
Ah, the pain of never having enough time to read… and it always seems that when you do, you can't find anything to read! I'm currently halfway through the Asian Saga by James Clavell. I've read those books so many times I've lost count. I was about a third of the way through Shogun when I found out that there's a new FX series based on the book that's going to be on Disney+ at the end of February! Although I've finished reading Shogun since, I'm trying to finish reading the other 5 books before the series starts… I don't think I'm going to make it, lol.
I hope you enjoy the Tarzan novels if you get to read them!!
I haven't seen many other Tarzan movies, but I did really enjoy Greystoke with Christopher Lambert and Andie MacDowell. Of the ones I've seen it feels the closet to the books. And it has an unexpected connection to the Disney version… Andie MacDowell's voice was dubbed by Glenn Close, so it's like seeing Jane and hearing Kala!
Growing up I watched the Tarzan tv series starring Wolf Larson and Lydie Denier, which was my first introduction to Tarzan. It takes place in more modern times, and Jane was French in it. I watched it again a few years ago, and it was definitely not as good as I remember it being. But as a kid I found it thrilling, used to stay up until 3 am every Saturday to watch it!

CHAPTER FIVE
Title: Jane Doe Pairing: Kryber [Amber Liu x Krystal Jung] Fandom: f(x) Genre: Drama, romance, mystery Summary: When everything goes wrong in your life, there’s only one thing to do: party until you pass out. Amber is having a hard time getting along in society and one night, she’s simply done with its bullshit. She goes to a club and finds this mysterious stranger, introducing herself as Jane Doe. With a force greater than the sun’s gravitation, Amber is drawn to the beautiful brunette as if she had been all that was missing in her life and tries to find out who she is… However, Jane Doe isn’t planning on going easy on her. Word count: 1400 Rating: T A/N: Excuse the grammar mistakes, I’m not a native English speaker Read it on: AO3 & asianfanfics Moodboard: x
The next morning, Amber woke up due to a killing headache and the sound of ringing church bells in the distance. The first thing she did was groan. Not only did her head ache, but her body was sore as well. She felt awful; the lack of sleep mixed with a hangover didn’t do her much good. Her bad condition didn’t keep her from immediately noticing that the spot next to her was empty though. The longer she managed to keep her eyes open, the more memories of last night crashed over her like a wave. She was naked under the covers, which meant that the mysterious girl hadn’t been a dream. Still, she would be lying if she said that she wasn’t disappointed that she hadn’t stayed. When she looked around the room, it became clear that she didn’t leave any traces. It was like she had disappeared completely; vanished into thin air. She guessed it was fitting after all. Yet, the longer she looked, the more she noticed that certain details didn’t add up. Amber didn’t remember turning of the light last night, yet the lamp in the corner of the room wasn’t shining anymore. Her dishes of last night that she had been too lazy to clear and had left on her kitchen table were gone. The clothes she had worn were folded and were positioned in a neat heap on her desk even though she knew one hundred percent sure that the beautiful stranger had thrown them somewhere in a corner last night. There was a glass of water on her nightstand with two little pills next to it. Amber guessed they were painkillers by the look of them. There was a little, yellow note sticking out from under the glass. Getting the note was the first thing Amber did that morning. She unfolded it, knowing it just couldn’t be accidental. Without getting her hopes up, she opened the note, revealing only a phone number. A small smile formed on her lips and she looked at the elegant handwriting. Amber managed to find her phone in the back pocket of her jeans. The first thing she did was make a new contact and save the number. She doubted for a moment when she had to enter a name, but eventually saved the number as ‘Jane Doe’. Despite the agonizing headache that caused her to prefer death over anything right now, Amber managed to get up and take a shower. She smelled like sweat, alcohol and sex and the scent was enough to make her gag. When she was done – and felt a bit better – she opened her fridge to silence her rumbling belly. Sadly, her fridge was as good as empty. With a sigh, she started to get dressed to go to the store. She took her most comfortable clothes out of her drawer: an oversized, black sweater, her favorite jeans, a snapback to cover her messy hair and her fake Ray Ban sunglasses to hide the dark circles under her eyes. Amber took her skateboard and left her apartment. When she skated to the supermarket a few blocks away, she noticed how tired she actually was. By the time she arrived, she was panting slightly. Amber got some fresh groceries and was on her way back home when the church bells rang again. On her way back, she passed the church and longingly let her gaze go over the impressive building. It was Sunday morning and normally she would have attended the service but she had woken up too late this morning. She reckoned it wouldn’t be that bad to skip one, but she still felt sad she couldn’t go. A stream of people was leaving the church and blocked the pavement, causing Amber to be forced to jump off her skateboard and walk until the mass of human bodies would scatter off. She walked until there was enough space to skate again. As she let her board fall on the ground again and got on, she noticed a flicker of long, brown hair in the corner of her eye. Amber didn’t pay any attention to it, until she felt someone bump their shoulder hard against hers. A little irritated, she looked up into an angry pair of eyes. They belonged to a man, with sleek, light brown hair, black eyes and full lips. The male wore a shirt that looked like it cost as much as all of her clothes together, tucked in a beige pantalon that ended just above his calves. With his hair pushed back, he looked like a common rich guy. He was the definition of handsome, although his angry appearance took away that effect. He was the last one of a group of friends to leave the church, walking in the way Amber needed to go too. They all had the same fancy, wealthy-looking style and the straight backs of people who had never known anything but fortune. “Don’t block the pavement, girl,” he hissed towards her. Amber was ready to bark something back, but the young man already turned around and walked away. His friends joined him, all of them with their heads held high. He threw her another filthy look and grabbed one of the girls by her hand, pulling her along. Amber sighed and shook her head, watching them go. Right when she wanted to get on her board and skate off, the girl who was holding hands with the rude passer-by turned around. For a moment, their eyes met but Amber looked away, only realizing a few seconds later that those dark eyes were strangely familiar. Amber immediately jerked her head up, her mouth already opened to say something. The beautiful, mysterious stranger smiled to her with the same smug smile she had showed so many times yesterday evening. Their eyes locked and she winked, causing Amber’s mouth to fall open a little bit more. Before she turned around again, she mouthed words that Amber unmistakably recognized as ‘call me’. The brunette flashed another smile before turning around and hooking her arm around the man. All Amber could do was stare at her, dazzled about her sudden appearance. She stared until the girl was nothing more but a dot in the distance, eventually disappearing around the corner, her long, brown hair waving in loose ringlets around her shoulders. The most remarkable thing was that she looked like she didn’t stay up all night, let alone spent the night with someone else. There were no signs that she had spent yesterday evening drinking in a club, doing body shots or hooking up, except for a small red spot in her neck that Amber recognized as the spot she had bitten down upon in the heat of the moment. Her tight dress of yesterday was replaced for one that was looser around the legs, more of a summer dress, that ended around the knees. Her heels had become ballerina’s – which immediately turned her a lot smaller, probably even shorter than Amber herself. The way she had her fingers intertwined with the rich adolescent made her toes curl with jealousy. When Amber came home, she didn’t even care to unpack her groceries – she simply shoved the entire bag into the fridge – and immediately got her phone. During her ride home, she had thought that it had vibrated, indicating that there was a message, and she hadn’t been wrong. It was the number she had saved this morning. Jane Doe. I had fun last night. I don’t say this to everybody. You have something about you that’s special, Amber. Don’t be fooled about my appearance at the St. Paul’s Church, a girl has to get by in this world, doesn’t she? Be sure to contact me. Krystal Jung. Amber started to laugh. She laughed aloud, shaking her head, reading the message over and over again until her eyes got stuck at the name at the bottom. Krystal Jung, she was called Krystal Jung. Had a name ever fitted a person better? She guessed not. Krystal… She indeed shone like crystals and was even more stunning than one. Amber immediately changed the name of the contact and eagerly started to type back.

“Framing Britney Spears” Archives Our Shifting Understanding of Mental Health | Bitch Media
The 2021 New York Times documentary Framing Britney Spears chronicles the singer’s rise to fame, her personal battles, and her 12-year conservatorship, problematically managed by her father, Jamie Spears. Throughout the film, which aired on FX and Hulu to massive viewership, control is a prominent theme: Who actually has control over Britney Spears, the person; Britney Spears, the entertainer; and Britney Spears, the business enterprise? And what does that mean for her mental health? Framing Britney Spears doesn’t purport to know the definitive answers to those questions, but it does present this truth: Our patriarchal culture weaponizes mental health and demonizes mental illness. Women who don’t hide their mental health issues are rarely handled with empathy or genuine concern. Instead, they’re dismissed as “crazy.” Like Bertha Mason in Jane Eyre (1847) or the narrator in Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s short story The Yellow Wallpaper (1892), women are often blamed for the toxic conditions that keep them hostage. For Spears, her celebrity magnified her struggles, turning the painful aspects of her private life into mass entertainment under the guise of public lessons in morality.

Hulu New Releases: April 2021
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
While the first day of spring technically belongs to March, everyone knows that it kicks into high gear in April. To celebrate the changing of the seasons, Hulu is finally bringing back its signature original series for April 2021.
Season 4 of the multiple Emmy award-winning The Handmaid’s Tale premieres on April 28. It’s been awhile since we’ve seen June and her dystopian world. In fact, it’s been so long that our own world decided to endure its own dystopian pandemic in the meantime. Hopefully this series’ return will mean we can keep our political and social collapses on television where they belong.
Aside from The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu isn’t brining much else to the table in terms of originals this month. Thankfully, the one other original that Hulu has in store for April sounds completely righteous. Sasquatch, the latest docuseries from the Duplass brothers producing team, will cover exactly what the title promises. This three-part series heads off to the Pacific Northwest for a tale about an elicit pot farm and the possibility that three men were viciously murdered by Big Foot on it. Sign us up!
Library titles for Hulu in April 2021 are also pretty thin. But April 1 does feature the arrival Mad Max (1980) and Die Hard (1988). Then April 28 sees the arrival of…well, Arrival (2016). Those aren’t bad streaming options in case the weather in April decides to not be spring-like.

Godmothered (Disney+, 2020)
If only these inflatable scarecrows could talk...
Starring: Jillian Bell, Isla Fisher, Jane Curtin, June Squibb
Plot Synopsis: A young and unskilled fairy godmother ventures out on her own to prove her worth by tracking down a young girl whose request for help was ignored. (x)
In My Humble Opinion: Just like Noelle before it, Godmothered debuts on Disney+ with a production background much fancier than your usual Hallmark feature. Director Sharon Maguire comes from the Bridget Jones series. The cast is filled with names that maybe aren’t as stacked as the cast of Noelle was, but would certainly be enough to merit a theatrical release. The production budget is high enough to merit Academy Award nominated composers and fancy enough visual FXs and an animated sequel to boot. There was money that was put into this movie.
It’s easy to get distracted by how fancy everything is when you are used to talking about movies that shoot in three weeks or less. Godmothered is the fancy, shiny object of this year’s line-up. No doubt about it.
Not that it doesn’t have merits outside of that. It’s charming enough. Isla Fisher remains one of comedy’s most wasted actresses. The pseudo-love interest is super cute. There’s a couple of good laugh lines. In general, there are worse ways to spend a Saturday afternoon.
However, Godmothered has its major flaws as well. Jane Curtin is wasted on an antagonist role that is supposed to give a sense of urgency to the film’s plot but mainly feels like a waste of time. Plus it’s major deconstruction of what constitutes a “Happily Ever After” is rushed into a couple of monologues and is not as central to the film’s thesis as the press materials would want you to believe. In general, the film is a knock-off of both Enchanted and Elf except that those films were much funnier versions of what Godmothered is trying to do which results in the film coming across as a pale imitation. Maybe that’s why Godmothered was always intended to premiere exclusively on Disney+. You can have all the money in the world, but what does it mean if it isn’t used to make the best possible product?
Beyond that, this is a blog that reviews made-for-TV Christmas movies and thus it feels like it is my duty to note that Godmothered is a film that didn’t really need a holiday setting (it frankly, might have been better without it). There are a couple of set pieces at Christmas events (notably a Christmas parade), and we are sadly forced to listen to “Sleigh Ride” but the celebration of the holidays doesn’t really have any bearing on the plot of the movie. If you were coming to Godmothered looking for holiday magic, there are better places to find it.
Watch If: You think Boston Tea Party re-enactments are a civic duty, if you stress pluck your eyebrows or if you are killing it with teen girls and shut-ins.
Skip If: You are a tooth fairy who has been to Burning Man, if you are a grumpy princess or if you are a raccoon who is bad at sweeping.
Final Rating: ★ ★ (★) ☆ ☆

The 25 Biggest TV Shows that Defined the 2010′s
Tumblr media
Described as the golden age of television, the 2010’s redefined what we saw on our silver screens. With many of its programmes being compared to the work of the film industry, television changed before our very eyes these past ten years. We said goodbye to our favourite politicians, fell in and out of love with an after school club that sang show tunes, and crowned the king of the seven kingdoms. The 2010’s has an abundance of programming for us to watch, so making this list was quite the difficult task. In order to be considered for this list, the majority of the show’s seasons would have had to be aired from January 1st, 2010 to December 31st, 2019. And, each show has been ranked based on its impact on television/its audiences, as well as the quality being taken into account (but not being considered quite as much as the former). So, before we move into another ten years of the ever-changing landscape of the small screen, let’s take a look at the best shows we watched.
HONORABLE MENTIONS (26 - 40)
26. Top Boy 27. How To Get Away With Murder 28. Keeping Up With The Kardashians 29. One Day At A Time 30. Rick and Morty 31. Jane the Virgin 32. New Girl 33. Broad City 34. Crazy Ex Girlfriend 35. Master of None 36. Bob’s Burgers 37. You 38. Insecure 39. Bojack Horseman 40. The Simpsons
Tumblr media
25) This Is Us, NBC (2016 - present)
Renewed until 2022, ‘This Is Us’ was the simultaneously heart wrenching and heartwarming drama that changed the game for television this decade. From its phenomenal cast performances to the well thought-out story arcs for each character, the family drama was one of the most significant programmes of the 2010’s. What made the Emmy award winning programme so special this decade was its ability to give each character a personality that felt real. We didn’t like these characters because they were interesting, we fell in love with them because they represented the realities of life. From Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) depiction of heavy insecurities from being overweight to Rebecca's (Mandy Moore) struggle of being a single mother, ‘This Is Us’ is a show about real people, non-fabricated.
Tumblr media
24) On My Block, Netflix (2018 - present)
A surprise hit for the streaming platform, ‘On My Block’ was the most-binged show on Netflix during its premiere year. For both seasons that the show has been released, ‘On My Block’ has been an internet sensation, having its audiences watching the show as quickly as possible to avoid spoilers. The youth drama captivated audiences with its relatability, comedy, and the fact that it doesn’t shy away from reality when it touches on gun violence and life for kids in rough neighborhoods.
The show definitely had its impact for the past two years, and it also deserves more. For a show with minimal advertisement to capture the hearts of so many worldwide - and to even best the streaming network’s veteran programming - is a feat that is worth celebrating. ‘On My Block’ is a show that celebrates the underdog in life. It puts young, poor people of colour at the forefront and allows them to tell their own stories - be it dramatic or comedic.
Tumblr media
23) Killing Eve, BBC America (2018 - present)
A show that really made a name for itself was the international hit ‘Killing Eve’. The drama starring Jodie Comer from ‘My Mad Fat Diary (2013 - 2015)’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy (2005 - present)’ star Sandra Oh took the world by storm with its intense and teasingly romantic performances. Oh and Comer became one of the greatest pairings this decade with their love-hate relationship in ‘Killing Eve’. The leads both equally balance each other out with their ability to be both comedic and dramatic whilst teasing both a romance and a constant desire to detonate the other, which is a quality not many can possess. The BBC programme succeeded in a crowded market of dramatic content by ensuring that it was impossible for one woman to have carried the show, as even though Comer has the task of portraying multiple personalities throughout each episode, Oh is just as striking with her nervous, intelligent and chaotic portrayal of the vulnerable and fervid Eve Polastri.
Tumblr media
22) Big Little Lies, HBO (2017 - present)
With an all-star cast like this, it would’ve been a real shame had this show disappointed. Luckily, there’s a reason these A-listers joined the show as ‘Big Little Lies’ had us on the edge of our seats each week. Dealing with the influx of made for bingeing TV programmes being released in one set, the cable show had a lot to fight against, as it required fans to stay on board each week whilst retaining the ins and outs of the crime drama. ‘Big Littles Lies’ succeeded in the attention-span battle as each episode was carefully curated so that we wouldn’t forget the important details. Moments were revisited whilst every scene changed the story somehow without adding too much that we got confused.
From the phenomenal cast to the striking writing and directing, the HBO drama is a defining show of the 2010’s as it was one of the few shows that made it almost impossible to log online without reading spoilers. Although it may not have the same hype as another fellow HBO programme, it still held its own and had us writing theories and listening to podcasts to keep us going until the next episode.
Tumblr media
21) Brooklyn Nine Nine, NBC (2013 - present)
After being cancelled by FOX in 2018, the show was resurrected by the Gods at NBC and given two extra seasons to last until 2020 (for now!). The irony in this show is that it didn’t make much noise until its cancellation, where the silent fanbase made their voices heard. Although the reaction of fans isn’t quite the reason it got renewed, this still proved to be a pinnacle moment for television in the 2010s. Many shows lose their network, but not many make as much a spectacle as ‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ did, leading it to becoming one of the most talked about shows of 2018. And there’s a reason for that. The cop sitcom may have its problems, but what it does successfully is give us a reason to root for every character they have (including Hitchcock and Scully!). A constant trope in comedy television is that there tends to be a few characters that are outright awful - at least to the more than casual viewer. But with the now NBC comedy, each one is lovable and has gone on their individually engaging journey throughout the years. Rootable characters are the root to every TV show that touches its viewers’ hearts, and ‘Brooklyn Nine Nine’ does that with every single on-screen persona.
Tumblr media
20) American Crime Story, FX (2016 - present)
When it comes to biopics, television hardly gets noted as having some great renditions, but ‘American Crime Story’ is changing that. The debut season that detailed the OJ Simpson trial is probably one of the best seasons of modern television as it cleverly and accurately dictated the trial from the murder up until the verdict, giving viewers as close a look as possible to the reality of the crime. Sarah Paulson gave us a phenomenal performance as Marcia Clark whilst Cuba Gooding Jr. delivered OJ better than anybody imaginable.
The second season was also on par with its predecessor as ‘Glee (2009 - 2015)’ alum Darren Criss lead the show to another year of critical acclaim as Andrew Cunanan in ‘The Assasination of Gianni Versace’. Much like the first season, this one was an award show favourite, and on top of that, solidified Criss as a seasoned actor in the business.
Tumblr media
19) When They See Us, Netflix (2019)
Created by Ava DuVernay, the Netflix mini-series focusing on a significant part of the drastic life of The Exonerated Five’s lives. Each of the six episodes carefully detailed their story, ensuring each movement and word connoted the struggle faced by Kevin Richardson, Antron McCray, Yusef Salaam, Korey Wise and Raymond Santana. What lands this show on the list isn’t the critical praise or accolades, but the detail oriented work on display throughout the series. ‘When They See Us’ did what many shows have deterred from over the years, and that was telling a real story with no boundaries. What makes a biopic successful is when it encourages its audience to research the original story after watching it. And after being viewed by over 23 million people less than a month within its release, we saw conversations take place about the Exonerated Five. We went back to watch the original documentary, found out more about the evils of Linda Fairstein, and conversations about the initial arrests grew and grew. ‘When They See Us’ was a phenomenon that created relevant conversations and truly defined this decade.
Tumblr media
18) The Good Place, NBC (2016 - 2020)
In 2016, the creator of ‘Brooklyn Nine Nine (2013 - present)’ and ‘Parks and Recreation (2009 - 2015)’ took on a more challenging project as he created ‘The Good Place’; a comedy that tackles the meaning of life and how important we are to each other and the universe. The US comedy has become a staple in comedy as it challenged its conventions whilst keeping up the light-hearted nature we all anticipate. What made the show so special is that it gave us an abundance of extremely imperfect characters and relished in it. From the narcissism to their careless nature, it’s surprising that the season one finale plot twist even took us by surprise, but somehow it did, and that’s because beyond the fact that these people were mostly terrible, they were, above all else, lovable. Throughout the series we learned to love them for their bad sides, and saw that beyond what made them such horrific people, they were pretty decent. ‘The Good Place’ was a show that aimed to prove that humans are more than the good and bad things that they do, and although it has deteriorated in quality in the latter seasons, it still holds quite a large influence over this decade.
Tumblr media
17) Veep, HBO (2012 - 2019)
One of the saddest losses of the 2010’s, ‘Veep’ was the excellent kind of programming that this decade will forever be remembered for. Beginning with a slow start, the Julia-Louis Dreyfus lead show stole our hearts with its wit and relevant comedy. ‘Veep’ took on what the world was focusing on - politics and feminism - and put it at the forefront of a primetime TV show. And to ensure we were watching, we received a stellar cast and perfect writing each episode. The political comedy is something that can be rewatched again and again, and never get old, which is why it’s such a shame we won’t be seeing it anymore. But maybe sometimes it’s better to bow out early.
Tumblr media
16) Grey’s Anatomy, ABC (2005 - present)
If we’re going to discuss programmes with longevity, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ has to be on the list. The most successful programme from TV veteran Shonda Rhimes, the medical drama has been a powerful force in the industry. Launching the careers of the likes of Jesse Williams and Golden Globe winner Sandra Oh, ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ can be credited for getting a generation of young adults/teens into television drama. Some of the biggest fans of TV today found their love for the medium through Rhimes’ programme and have remained loyal ever since. Although the show isn’t quite at its peak anymore, it’s still holding strong, and it’s hard to find a television fan that hasn’t been captivated by the drama in the Seattle-based programme. The show has placed this high on the list as it’s had an immense influence on today’s TV (fans) and its longevity is unmatched.

15) Love Island, ITV2 (2015 - present)
Like many British reality shows, it took a year or two for ‘Love Island’ to finally make some noise, but when it did, it was most definitely heard. Making headlines in season two and becoming one of the most watched British shows just a year later, the romance-based reality competition forced viewers across the world to spend their summers with young singles searching for love and an Instagram following. On top of consisting of catty arguments, shocking twists and viral memes, ‘Love Island’ captured the hearts of reality TV fans worldwide for its relatable nature. Young people would tune in every summer to see people just like them search for love in a similar dating pool. On the surface we would be seen taking to Twitter to insist that certain women were being “mugged off” whilst her love interest was simply playing a game, but beyond that it became a starting point for conversations around misogyny, racism, sisterhood and mental gymnastics. From the beginning of the season, patterns would be noticed by audiences when the black contestants would typically be the last ones chosen - in the season five premiere, the final four singles left to be coupled up were all people of colour, three of which were black. The mistreatment of women like Samira Mighty and Yewande Biala would create discourse across the internet on misogynoir, and the constant talk of “tall, dark and handsome” would form interesting dialogue on what that really means. It may not seem like the most cleverly put together show, but everyday it made its worldwide viewers tune in as soon as they could to see the action as it poured out, so that we could interact with each other live. It’s rare for a reality show to be this well loved across the globe, as many competition programmes of the latter half of the decade were usually watched by the country it originally aired in, but the ITV2 show’s ability to create discourse and fanfare is what made it the powerful programme that it is (which was so big that even ‘Saturday Night Live (1975 - present)’ made a sketch about it). With the dating programme’s relatability, youth, easy-to-watch nature and its ability to create a conversation, it became a pinnacle of the 2010s that has had other networks attempting (and failing) to emulate it.

14) The Big Bang Theory, CBS (2007 - 2019)
With its wit, humour and unique take on life as a modern nerd, ‘The Big Bang Theory’ became a frontrunner in the comedy genre for the entire 2010s. Bowing out gracefully in the final year of the decade, the nerd-oriented comedy took the decade by storm, being one of CBS’ most viewed shows for the majority of its stay on the network. What captivated audiences was the simplistic comedy that was stylized as though it was intelligent. The show made basic science-related jokes that those fresh out of Biology class would understand, and thus make the joke somewhat relatable. And that’s not to bash the show for not having funny jokes, because it did, it just had a certain audience to appeal to. ‘The Big Bang Theory’ was never going to be funny in the same way that ‘Barry (2018 - present)’ is. The Jim Parsons-lead sitcom earned its play high on this list as the show was a huge international success. Existing for the entirety of the decade and only leaving because the lead lost interest before the fans did, it’s clear that this was a very beloved television programme, and when it comes to comedy in the 2010s, this will always be brought up.
Tumblr media
13) Modern Family, ABC (2009 - 2020)
When it came to comedy in the 2010s, no true fan of the genre ended the decade without loving at least one episode of ‘Modern Family’. The family sitcom which has been followed by similar shows on the same network such as ‘Fresh Off The Boat’ and ‘Black-ish’, remained a dominant force in the genre for the former half of the 2010s. Tying the record for Most wins for Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys with ‘Frasier’ (5 wins) from 2010 - 2014, it was a clear critical success and a definite frontrunner throughout the years. But beyond what the critics have said, fans have taken a liking to the show as it offered simplicity with humour. ‘Modern Family’ took an average concept of a dysfunctional but loving family, and detailed how their simple yet outrageous scenarios were relatable to both the audience and each other. Every time we tuned into an episode of the American sitcom, we were given a half an hour of fun, light entertainment that kept us entertained for the entire decade. For those that were in their teens, we related to Haley Dunphy (Sarah Hyland), who was always confused about her path in life and wasn’t always doing the right thing. For those that were seen as the sensible member of the family, we related to Alex Dunphy (Ariel Winter) who, although she appeared to have everything together, she never really did, and relied on her relationship with her sibling in order to feel superior but to also be vulnerable. Gloria Delgado-Pritchett (Sofia Vergara) represented the underestimated yet striking individuals, Claire Dunphy (Julie Bowen) portrayed those with the incessant need to impress their parents, Phil Dunphy (Ty Burrell) was made for the hopeful parents always looking to do the right thing, whilst other kids could find themselves trying to findt their way in Luke Dunphy (Nolan Gould) or Manny Delgado (Rico Rodriguez). Everybody had their place in the family represented in ‘Modern Family’, so we found ourselves attached to see that play out every episode, with its charm, chaos and light-hearted nature. Also, Cameron Tucker (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitchell Pritchett (Jesse Tyler Ferguson) created a space for queer representation that both conformed and challenged the existing conventions, which especially for the beginning of the decade, was quite transformative.
Tumblr media
12) Atlanta, FX (2016 - present)
A critical darling from its very first episode, ‘Atlanta’ gave us some of the 2010s most iconic episodes. From the jarring 'Teddy Perkins' episode to the innovatively shot 'B.A.N.' from the first season, this show was daring from its origins. The aforementioned season one episode proved to audiences that ‘Atlanta’ wasn’t an ordinary programme; the experimental production plays out as a talk-show, with some fake commercials being played between the story. With episodes like ‘Teddy Perkins’, the Donald Glover created show delivered one of the most unsettling projects this decade. The original airing on FX even aired with no ad breaks in between, forcing viewers to feel as eerie as intended. ‘Atlanta’ earned its place as one of the most defining shows of the decade as it proved to be daring without failure. Each episode told a story, and with its blend between comedy and drama, it really was a pinnacle programme from this era of blurred genres.
Tumblr media
11) House of Cards, Netflix (2013 - 2018)
Netflix’s very first original TV show premiered back in 2013, and although a controversial programme today due to its male lead not knowing how consent works, we can’t deny the power that this show had throughout the years. Without the success of ‘House of Cards’ some of today’s biggest Netflix originals like 'Queer Eye', 'The Crown', 'Sex Education' and ‘Russian Doll’ may have ceased to exist. Due to the impact of the political drama, the streaming platform may not have had enough selling points to take on traditional broadcast television. ‘House of Cards’ may not be held to high regard anymore - with good reason - but it played its role in the golden age of television, and was one of the few significant shows that changed the way we watched television forever.
Tumblr media
10) Orange Is The New Black, Netflix (2013 - 2019)
‘Orange Is The New Black’ was one of the few shows that changed TV viewership. Being one of Netflix’s first original programmes, it allowed the market to open up to the idea of binge-watching a programme, and giving traditional cable television a run for its money. But beyond changing how we watched television, the Jenji Kohan production changed what was on television. Prior to its controversial and damaging season four finale, the first three seasons of the show gave fans a welcoming set of episodes featuring strong, real and vulnerable female characters in serious situations and relationships. This continued on until the last season, however since the incident in the fourth season occurred, it took the show until its final installment to truly recover from its quality. But that doesn’t deter from the fact that this show had its impact, and found its way into people’s homes in ways that others couldn’t quite capture. ‘Orange Is The New Black’ created heart-wrenching stories tackling immigration, sexuality, rape, racism and more each episode. What made the show oddly superior to most of its peers is that although the lead was probably the most boring character on the show, the ensemble were so full of life and character that it more than made up for it. With characters such as Nicky Nichols (Natasha Lyonne), Poussey Washington (Samira Wiley) and Taystee Jefferson (Danielle Brooks) grabbing fans’ hearts every time they appeared on screen, it made the prison-based dramady something special. We dealt with Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) and her annoying antics so that we could see if Nicky was ever going to find the love and peaceful life she deserved. We dealt with the lead of the show in hopes that her connection with Taystee would give her the justice she fought for throughout the entirety of the programme. ‘Orange Is The New Black’ was far from perfect, but it ushered in a generation of new and diverse programming that put women at the forefront. It got a lot wrong, but as its intention was to change the way we watched TV, it ensured we got what was missing.
Tumblr media
9) American Horror Story, FX (2011 - present)
Creator Ryan Murphy was known for some less serious projects prior to this, and although they were successful, this is the project that transcended him into one of the biggest stars of the 2010s. ‘American Horror Story’ premiered to rave reviews from fans and critics alike, and throughout the years placed itself in the meme Hall of Fame with moments like Emma Roberts’ “surprise, bitch”. The show was able to make an almost non-existent genre in TV thrive and survive for almost ten seasons. Fans flocked to this show because it didn’t rely on jump scares to consider itself “horror”. ‘American Horror Story’ created characters who, with visuals combined with their literally insane character work, gave the show the fear factor even blockbuster films of the same genre were missing. Murphy and co. created a cast of characters that although were only ever with us for a season or so, gave us a reason to come back each time. The cast itself are also a flawless set of performers, but it’s the writing from each episode that’s allowed the show to become a pinnacle of television in the 2010s. Also, Sarah Paulson.
Tumblr media
8) Rupaul’s Drag Race, VH1 (2009 - present)
Nothing redefined a whole genre of television quite like ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’. Ushering in a unique and fresh feel to the reality TV competition genre, Rupaul and his clan of drag queens delivered 10 seasons of the show this decade, as well as the four ‘All Stars’ seasons, and the international spin-offs. The show made its mark on the world with the help of the internet, as the viral memes such as Jasmine Masters’ “and I oop!” and Coco Montrese screaming “I’m not joking, b*tch!” were shared millions of times across the world wide web. We also got to see the queens have their lip sync battles impress fans around the globe; from Alyssa Edwards and Tatianna’s “Shut Up And Drive” to Brooke Lynn Hytes vs Yvie Oddly’s “Sorry Not Sorry”, the queens had fans gagging each week.
Drag has been seen as a fairly underground art form for many years, and throughout most of this show’s reign, the idea that it would remain this way was pretty consistent with its fanbase. However, within the latter years of the 2010’s, the queens of the werk-room transcended their talent into global fame, and have allowed drag to become the mainstream work of art it always deserved to be. Each season a talented and fiery bunch of drag queens strut into the werk room to be crowned ‘America’s Next Drag Superstar’. And with its wit, unique storytelling and ability to become instantly viral, ‘Rupaul’s Drag Race’ easily became the best reality show of the 2010’s. The show became so popular that the previously underground medium has given queens success at the Primetime Emmys, and even launched one of its biggest stars - Shangela Laquifa Wadley - into the Oscar winning film ‘A Star Is Born’. The rise to the top was a tough one for the drag competition, as the masses were never clued into the idea of drag as a concept, let alone a show full of openly queer artists, yet through the years the show and its cast prevailed. What made the show so special was that queer audiences could not only see themselves and their stories portrayed on television, but they didn’t have to deal with tragic endings and disrespectful storylines in order to do so. Queer fans could enjoy the programme for its fun nature whilst still feeling represented. And although the racial diversity only picked up towards the later seasons, it is still one of the most diverse programmes on television. The programme isn’t perfect when it comes to diversity and inclusion as it still has to tackle its gender bias, treatment of the queens of colour themselves and the fact that the scene behind the camera is still very much mostly white. But, that’s not to say that it hasn’t made some progress.
Tumblr media
7) Black Mirror, Netflix (2011 - present)
It was pretty hard to be a TV fan this decade without hearing of this show, let alone surrendering and watching at least one episode. The science fiction anthology series cleverly took on a varied set of themes and challenged its viewers to question their everyday thoughts and actions. From having a Prime Minister have sex with a pig, to Miley Cyrus’s dramatic portrayal of Ashley O and the iconic San Junipero episode, it’s difficult to not navigate this episode without being entertained by this show one way or another. Although the Netflix programme doesn’t have to focus on long-term storytelling, it does have to convince us to care enough for new characters and stories each episode. The anthology series has allowed many kinds of tales to be told, and has managed to build a dedicated audience each time it returns. From its excellent accolades to its incredible critique, ‘Black Mirror’ is a programme unlike any other, and is by far one of the greatest programmes to come out of the 2010s.
Tumblr media
6) Glee, FOX (2009 - 2015)
Although criticized for its inconsistent writing and eventual fan service, ‘Glee’ was a show unlike any other, and remains impactful to this day. The FOX musical dramady did something beyond being a decent show, it paved the way for LGBT+ representation for years following it. If there’s one thing the 2010s should be remembered for, it’s the amount of openly queer characters on our screens (be it good or bad). When ‘Glee’ had one of its leads, Kurt Hummel (Chris Colfer), come out in 2009 episode ‘Preggers’, an iconic moment of television immediately arose. Hummel may have made some questionable decisions since then, but the rest of the show followed suit with giving queer people somebody to see themselves in. Santana Lopez (Naya Rivera) had one of the greatest coming out scenes in 2011, Coach Beiste (Dot-Marie Jones) dealt with being in an abusive relationship in 2012, Wade “Unique” Adams’ (Alex Newell) gender issues were explored in 2015, and Brittany Pierce (Heather Morris) was given positive bisexual representation throughout the series. Although nobody’s story was ever perfect, the show opened the doors for more LGBT+ representation following it. Since its premiere, we’ve seen more (and somewhat better) queer representation in ‘One Day At A Time’, ‘Sense8’, 'The Bold Type', and creator Ryan Murphy's other programmes 'The New Normal' and 'Pose'. ‘Glee’ came at a time when queer youth needed representation more than ever, and it may not have been the best, but it was there, and it taught a generation of teens a whole lot about themselves, and for that, it ranks pretty high on this decade-end list. They also happen to have the most Hot 100 Entries of all time (soon to be topped by Drake, who is only one song behind), and received 18 Primetime Emmy nominations during the peak of the show in 2011, so some may have said it did quite well.
Tumblr media
5) Parks and Recreation, NBC (2009 - 2015)
Beginning right at the end of the last decade and ending in the middle of this one, ‘Parks and Recreation’ definitely had a good shot at making an impact throughout the 2010s. And it managed to do exactly that. On top of being one of the few shows to have a worthy series finale, ‘Parks and Recreation’ was a programme that warmed our hearts every single episode and reminded us of a better life in an unfortunate political climate. Leslie Knope was a beacon of light in a dark world, ensuring that despite living what can be described as a simple life, she created something extraordinary. The Michael Schur original ranks so high as it has been a part of one of the most enjoyable kinds of comedies - the mockumentary - and did it extremely well. We’ve seen many shows make their mark amongst this genre, but ‘Parks and Recreation’ was able to do so without the help of a big Primetime Emmy push, and created a devoted fanbase. With the timeless memes and the rewatchable episodes, the citizens of Pawnee gave us some of the most enjoyable moments of the 2010s that will carry us into the 2020s just as well.
Tumblr media
4) Fleabag, BBC One (2016 - 2019)
What appeared to be the quiet assassin of 2019 turned out to be one of the biggest shows of the 2010s. Phoebe Waller-Bridge released her one-woman show in 2013 in England and was soon picked up by BBC Three. Whilst the first season had its fair share of attention, it wasn’t until it returned for a second season in 2019 when Waller-Bridge truly left her mark. Viewers across the globe fell in love with the dark yet witty comedy as the show wasn’t afraid to show what figuring it all out was really about. It was dark, it was morally unhinged, it was funny, it was crass, it was flawed, it was simply real. Waller-Bridge captured complicated women in every episode, whilst remaining real and funny. This show - much like the very underrated ‘Chewing Gum’ - gave an honest, humorous voice to regular women just trying to figure life out as oddly and uncomfortable as possible.
Tumblr media
3) Pose, FX (2018 - present)
The most vital LGBT+ inclusive show of the latter years of the decade, FX’s ‘Pose’ gave a platform to trans performers of colour with innovative and provocative storytelling. Although the show only arrived in late 2018, it’s earned a place on the list as it has helped push under-represented communities in the world of TV. With the likes of Billy Porter leading this show, the FX programme already had some celebrity prominence to keep it afloat, but beyond that it created stars out of its ensemble. The show has tackled the aids epidemic, life as a black queer person (most notably trans) and the origins of a lot of today’s queer culture. ‘Pose’ has set the tone for the next decade, and not only has become an important aspect of queer culture, but the television industry. As described by star Dominique Jackson in an interview with E!, "these things happened. You can't just sit in the comfort of your suburb and not realise that homelessness has occurred. Most of us who have lived in that time where the fear of contracting HIV and aids, the fear of wanting to work, the fear of walking the streets and not knowing if you're gonna get to your destination because someone is gonna kill you because of their thoughts about what you do in your bedroom, or how you express yourself. These things need to be seen. This is what 'Pose' does. It shows you everything about the juxtaposition between the rise of the Trump era, the literary scene, and the ballroom culture."
Tumblr media
2) Stranger Things, Netflix (2016 - 2020)
One of Netflix’s biggest successes since its streaming origins in 2007, ‘Stranger Things’ was a quick fan favourite as soon as it debuted. Initially pitched as a mini-series, the 80’s-based programme became a word-of-mouth success so big that Netflix had no other option but to renew it again, and again, and again (in which 2020 will see its final chapter). What makes the success of this show so fascinating is that it was able to take a mostly child-oriented cast and create a project that attracted the masses beyond that age group. It would’ve been easy for ‘Stranger Things’ to become a Tumblr sensation for a year or two, being forgotten by most subscribers and its existence being remembered only by the GIF sets on inactive blogs, but it was much more than that. The Duffer Brothers allowed the show to reach into the hearts of multiple age groups by tugging on the heartstrings of loving parents with children, kids and teens longing for an adventurous life, and those with a reminiscent/romanticized vision of childhood in the 80’s. ‘Stranger Things’ became more than what was on the tin, and ensured that every viewer was giving a suspenseful and emotional first eight episodes that were so addictive many of forgave the show for its dismal sophomore year.
Tumblr media
1) Game of Thrones, HBO (2011 - 2019)
Not only was this Emmy award winning series here for practically the entire decade, but it maintained its prominence for every single one of the years - even during its hiatus in 2018. Whether you loved the show or not, and no matter what your feelings regarding its final season are, there’s no denying that when it comes to the 2010s, ‘Game of Thrones’ will be the one show we will all reminisce on - for better or for worse. With the influx of streaming and on-demand services taking over, this HBO original will probably go down as the last show that we watch together. The programme was so popular that it practically forced its worldwide viewers to watch it beyond 1am on a Sunday night just to avoid seeing spoilers and to be able to talk about it freely the next morning. Even those that didn’t enjoy the show found it difficult to avoid spoilers, and for that, this show is definitely the show of the 2010s.

CHAPTER FOUR
Word count: 3300 Rating: M A/N: Excuse the grammar mistakes, I’m not a native English speaker Read it on: AO3 & asianfanfics Moodboard: x
They managed to get their jackets – hers being a beautiful beige coat that looked like it cost more than Amber made in a whole month – and get out of the club, never letting each other’s hands go. They had decided that it would be Amber’s place since the girl had given away that taking someone home whilst her sister was sleeping in the other room wasn’t very sexy. Since Amber had her own place – even though she had thin walls – it was quickly decided that they would go there, just to be safe. She knew it was normal to feel nervous before sex but she had never felt so utterly panicked. Even though this girl made her safer than anyone has ever made her feel in such a short period of time, the thought about showing off her body for her made her feel insecure. Amber had been all of her life ridiculed for her fashion sense and her boyish appearance. She felt like a woman but wearing revealing clothes was already a hard thing to do, let alone get naked. But during their walk home, the brunette kept squeezing reassuringly in her hands and it made her feel a little less like freaking out. They entered Amber’s apartment complex and moved upstairs. As soon as they had entered their apartment, one pair of beautiful chocolate brown eyes were pointed in her direction. It made her a bit uneasy. Now that the music was gone, they had gone oddly quiet. The amount of alcohol that ran through her veins had been already broken down a little by her liver and it made her head feel less clouded. The mysterious girl smiled knowingly, already guessing what was going on in her mind. “You can still send me away,” she offered, as she closed the gap between them slowly. Her glances reminded Amber of a predator on the hunt… slowly nearing their scared prey, ready to rip out their throat or open their belly with one flick of her wrist. Her heels slowly clicked on the floor. Each click made her tense her muscles more. Amber had trouble to answer. As the girl stepped towards her, she tried to step away. The problem was that her apartment wasn’t big and sooner rather than later her back bumped against the wall. She was forced to stay put whilst the brunette came closer and closer, watching her thoughtfully, still expecting an answer. “I-… n-no, just stay,” she stuttered, when they were belly-to-belly again. With her heels, she was just a little bit taller than she was, meaning Amber had to tilt her head a bit upwards. Her hand was cold when it slid into her neck, cupping her cheek. Amber watched how she let her eyes dwell on her lips. Her breath got stuck in her throat. “Good, I was already worrying you would send me away,” she said, with half a smile on her face. Amber swallowed audibly. She had to refrain herself from pulling her closer roughly and kiss her again. But without her little helper called alcohol, it was more difficult to let herself go like that. Amber shook her head though; the desire to keep her close and unravel all of her mysteries was still bigger than the uncomfortableness of doing something like this for the first time. She wanted her to stay until she could read her as if she had known her for years. The brunette suddenly closed the gap between them, causing Amber to step backwards in surprise until her back was entirely against the wall. It had no use, though, because the girl pressed her belly against hers. She kept one hand on the wall, to support herself. Amber was trapped between her and the wall and she wasn’t entirely sure if it was a bad thing. Amber felt her stroke with the tips of her fingers over the delicate skin in her neck, eventually pulling her closer when she couldn’t stand it anymore to just look at her lips and not touch them. Amber kissed back but it immediately felt off. The only sound in the room was their lips moving over each other and it made her painfully aware that she was about to have a hook-up with a woman. Back in the club she had still felt really tipsy and the music had drowned every other sound. It had been easier to kiss her when she had been lost in the moment. Now, that moment was over and she couldn’t get the feeling back anymore. It didn’t take long for the beautiful stranger to notice that Amber was having a hard time and she eventually stepped back. Amber immediately looked down, knowing fully well that it was her fault. “This feels very one-sided,” the girl said as she placed her hands on her hips, shaking her head. “If you don’t want me here, just tell me and I’ll leave.” “N-no,” Amber stuttered. “It’s not one-sided… It’s just that.. I don’t know. It’s hard to explain.” “I’m listening,” she said icily. Amber took a deep breath and looked up. For a moment, she was mesmerized by those deep, dark brown eyes. The coldness in them made her bite her lip softly. “I…” she started. She stopped again, not able to find the right words to express what went through her well. Amber refrained herself and decided to just throw it out, knowing that if she didn’t, she’d probably lose the mysterious girl. “I have never done this before…” she muttered, almost inaudible. “What, sex?” “No- I, I mean, yes. I have had sex, just not with a woman,” Amber elaborated clumsily. “I just don’t know what to do…” Her hard eyes softened immediately and a small smile formed on her lips. It grew bigger until it eventually couldn’t contain a light chuckle anymore. Amber looked down. “You thought I hadn’t noticed that already?” she asked, crossing her arms in front of her chest. With a slow strike, she closed the gap between them again. She placed her hands upon her cheeks, lifting her head so she was forced to look at her. The brunette sighed for a moment and bit sensually on her lower lip. “You’re so cute,” she muttered, before she closed in to kiss Amber. Clumsily, she placed her hands upon her hips, still a bit uneasy in this position. The kiss didn’t last long and when she pulled back, her mouth moved over to her ear. “I guide you,” she whispered. A quiver ran down Amber’s spine. Her eyes fluttered shut. “Just tell me what to do to make you more comfortable,” the brunette muttered. “Music,” Amber immediately answered. She found that her voice had become thick of sensation. She felt the other girl smile when their cheeks brushed together. “I suppose you have a speaker here, then?” she asked, as she bowed back. Amber nodded and immediately ducked underneath her arm to go and find it. As she set up the speaker, the girl plugged in her phone. She searched a playlist that fit the situation – obviously Spotify had a playlist that would settle down someone who’s nervous to have sex – and put it on. The song that filled the room was not one Amber knew but she immediately felt more in the mood. The instruments played a low and dark tune, accompanied by the heavy voice of a woman, hitting the base notes every once in a while. She pictured the singer singing the song in a velvet, bordeaux red dress and blood red lips. When she turned around to face the young woman, it seemed that her eyes had turned a shade darker, from chocolate to black. She walked over to the light switch and dimmed it, causing her small one-bedroom-apartment to be enveloped in semi-darkness. Amber was just able to see the contours of her body. The white of her dress seemed to glow. “Better?” she asked. Her voice had dropped a few octaves. Amber’s breath got caught in her throat. “Y-yes,” she stuttered. A small, smug smile formed on the brunette’s lips as she stepped closer again. Her heels clicked rhythmically on the wooden floor. With every click, Amber’s muscles tensed up more. When she was finally close enough to touch, it was almost unbearable to handle. Amber was the one to place her hands around her face and pull her closer. Their mouths connected in a wave of lust. She could feel the girl smile triumphantically against her lips. Suddenly, the sound of their kisses wasn’t at all so bad. Amber could feel a knot tie in her stomach, tickling her heart and her abdomen. Her apartment wasn’t large and within seconds they had found the bed. Amber was pushed onto her back as the brunette crawled on top, immediately kicking off her heels. The mattress creaked under the pressure of their weight. Amber had her arms wrapped around her small waist, keeping her close. With every movement of her hips, albeit just a small adjustment, a jolt of electricity ran through her body. Their heated breaths mingled in a way that turned her on even more. Eventually, she felt the tips of her fingers crawl underneath her shirt, stroking the soft skin underneath. They were cold and Amber gasped for breath, causing the other girl to chuckle. They moved upwards, her fingers trailing paths over her belly ever so lightly that it made goosebumps appear all over her body. Amber was naturally a bit awkward during foreplay, but the mysterious girl made her feel even more insecure. Not only was she a beauty unlike she had ever seen before, she also seemed to know exactly what she was doing. There was little that wasn’t completely controlled and whenever Amber responded by gasping or moaning, she smirked shamelessly. There was little the girl had to do to get Amber to the point where she didn’t want anything more but to make her unbutton her jeans, but that didn’t keep her from extending the foreplay until it almost physically hurt. Because Amber was still rather helpless, she had gotten rid over her own dress – not even needing Amber to pull down the zipper, because she was that impressive – leaving her in her black lingerie. It was nothing special, just a normal bra with hipsters, but on her they looked better than anything had ever looked on anyone. Unlike having sex with guys – who just wanted to bang as much and as soon as possible – the brunette paid a lot of attention to the small details; the touches; the little flick of the tip of her tongue around her hardened nipple. It all created so much more tension that by the time she had worked her way down, Amber was already panting and had accepted the fact that having sex with a woman was so much more better than having sex with a man. Her long fingers fumbling with the buttons of her black jeans were almost agonizing, even that little friction made her buck up her hips. It made the beautiful stranger smile even more smugly. She knew damn well what she was doing and Amber couldn’t even be mad at her for teasing her so much. Right before she was able to take off her shorts, Amber grabbed her wrist. “What’s your name?” she asked, for the third time that evening. The brunette raised her eyebrows for a moment, then grinned devilishly. “Why do you want to know? So you can moan it when you come?” Amber’s cheeks turned dark red and she let her go. The girl laughed and shook her head, pulling down her underwear with one simple movement. Amber didn’t lay long exposed under her gaze. Sooner rather than later, she had her back arched, a pair of fingers inside her and a grinning dark-haired beauty hoovering over her, placing feather light kisses in her neck. When Amber was done, she knew it was the young woman’s time to lay back and enjoy. The only problem was that Amber had no idea what to do. She had tried to pay attention to what the brunette had done to her but It had been incredibly difficult to note down what felt good and what felt less good. Basically, everything she had done had made her moan and had brought her closer to the edge. Amber had been too busy to pay attention and now she didn’t know what to do. Luckily, there was very little the brunette didn’t notice and it didn’t take long before she pulled her into a kiss and whispered in her ear that she’d help her – guide her. The thought only turned both of them on more and Amber was eager to start. Within a few more minutes, she could hear her own name escape from the brunette’s mouth in hot, breathy moans. Nothing had ever been so extremely satisfying and arousing as hearing the young woman mutter her name through gritted teeth as she squeezed her eyes shut, arched her back and tensed her body in pleasure. It was complete new experience to have someone have an orgasm by the things she did. With guys it was mostly their own actions that caused them to finish; the more and the heavier they thrusted, the earlier they came. Amber would, in fact, only need to spread her legs and nothing more was required of her. It was different this time and it was much sexier than it was to just spread her legs. When the brunette was almost at her climax, Amber finally got the hang of it a little and dared to do a little more, which resulted in the girl digging her nails into her shoulder and tense around her fingers not soon after that. Amber thought that they’d fall asleep after that, but she was proved quite wrong when she was pushed onto her back again. “Did you think I was just going to leave it with one time?” the brunette had asked her playfully. She had bowed down and sensually let her tongue run over her earlobe before whispering: “Don’t you want to make the most out of this night?” Amber had budged immediately. It took another hour and a half before they were finally done with each other. Panting, they laid side by side, Amber a little heavier than the brunette because she had been last before they quit. The blankets were twisted and knotted around their legs; it was too hot to pull them up to cover their naked bodies but it was too cold to toss it entirely to the side too. The bedsheet underneath them felt damp with their sweat and somehow that wasn't all unpleasant. The faint light in the back of the room and the moonlight were the only things that lightened the room which caused Amber to just make out the woman next to her. She didn't hesitate to let her gaze wander over her body: sprinkled with little drops of sweat, she seemed to shine like a chrystal with the moonlight falling onto her skin so beautifully. There were a few red stains ruining the picture; places where Amber's teeth had made bitten down onto the delicate skin in a moment of lust. She wondered if it would bruise up tomorrow or whether it would just stay slightly red; a reminder of their night. “Are you going to stay the night?” Amber asked. She tried to hide the hope in her voice but it was in vain. The mysterious woman turned her head and smiled. She propped herself up on one elbow and kissed her tenderly. “If that is what you want,” she said, after they broke apart. Amber looked at her for a moment, knowing fully well that she never wanted her to leave anymore but hesitating to say that, then took the blankets and threw them over their naked bodies. The girl smirked and turned to her side, giving Amber the space to lay down next to her and become the big spoon. Amber wrapped her arms around her tiny waist, pulling her body closer to hers. It felt like they fit perfectly, like their lips also fit each other’s perfectly. Almost as if they were made to do so, Amber wondered. She immediately pushed that thought out of her head. If she wouldn’t tell her her name, then there was no chance of them sharing more than a one night stand, was there? “What’s your name?” Amber muttered in her ear after a while. The brunette looked up to her and smiled weakly. “You’re persistent, aren’t you? Why, if I may ask?” Amber shrugged. In the semi-darkness, her dark pupils seemed to have turned black. They weren’t uninviting, though, but rather comforting. The only indication Amber had that made her realize this wasn’t all a dream was that the beautiful stranger had her fingers twisted around hers, holding her hand tightly. “You intrigue me.” Amber was surprised that she could answer so quickly and that she was so sure of her case. It made the girl laugh softly; a tinkling sound that she hadn’t heard often that evening. She had seen her smirk, smile and grin but she hadn’t heard her laugh before. Amber found herself dazzled by the sound for a moment. “What do you think will happen once you know my name?” she asked Amber. “Nothing would happen. It’d only take the mystery away, it’d take away the adventure and the romance.” “You act as if we’re participating in a drama,” Amber murmured, a little bit disappointed. The girl smiled and took her face in her hands. She bowed down and pressed a soft kiss upon her lover’s lips. “Tonight, we can pretend to, if we want to. Let me have it my way for once, tomorrow we will have to get back to our dull lives and pretend to like it. I like this and I want this, but it’s a luxury a girl can afford only once in a while.” Amber frowned. “Were there more like me, then?” The brunette chuckled and wiggled her eyebrows playfully. “Who knows? Does that bother you?” “Yes,” Amber immediately blurted out. Yes, it bothered her. Yes, she wanted to be the only one. It was hard to deny by now. The girl’s eyes sparkled mischievously. “Why would it bother you? You don’t even know me.” “But I want to.” She laughed, for the second time that evening. Amber noticed that her eyes squinted together in an eye-smile whenever she did that. The girl pressed another kiss against her cheek. “Cuddle with me,” she said, as she laid back down again, pulling Amber along with her. With a sigh she positioned herself around the brunette, taking on the role of the big spoon. Amber pulled the blankets over their naked bodies – which have grown cold during their conversation – and let herself enjoy the feeling of her skin against the soft material of the sheets. “Will you be there in the morning?” Amber asked, as she closed her eyes and let her head rest upon one of the pillows. She heard her lover smirk. “Who knows?”
