Day 28: Made you smile
Rated Teen, Beryl/Darcira and Ishnah/Veil, Oathbringer spoilers Cross posted on ao3
“I’m sorry I only have three cups,” Beryl said as she passed them out, then poured red wine in each. Veil thought it was sweet of her.
"Don't worry about it, I'd rather drink from the bottle anyway," Veil said, and traded with Beryl. After all, she had an image to maintain in front of the other members of the Unseen Court.
They sat in various places across Beryl’s small living space. Veil sat on Beryl's small bed with Ishnah close beside her, which she took as a hopeful sign. Darcira was curled up in a chair, looking like she was trying to spontaneously enter Shadesmar. Beryl sat cross-legged on a small rug on the floor. There were no windows, but the room was lit with topaz chips, giving the space the cheerful orange glow of a cozy fireplace, if not the warmth.
“I’d say it’s about time we got to know each other better,” Veil said to her assemblage of Lightweavers. It was just the women tonight. They were mostly new, and they needed a chance to relax and have fun together. “How about we play Heralds?”
Darcira groaned, but the others perked up. “Full ten?” Beryl asked eagerly, wiggling a bit as she sat.
“How about just the female Heralds, since it’s ladies’ night tonight?” Veil suggested with a small smirk. Shallan Davar was their boss, so this drinking game would be completely inappropriate. Veil, though…she thought she might get a chance to kiss Ishnah before the night was through.
. . .
A few turns in, Darcira had drank a few times but hadn’t been picked yet, and she was a bundle of nerves about it. Were they excluding her, or did they see she was nervous and they were trying to be nice? Darcira couldn’t tell. She knew it was important to spend more time with fellow Lightweavers, but everyone was so intimidating! Veil and Beryl were so cool and collected, and Ishnah was practically attached at the hip to Veil. Darcira couldn’t blame her, but where did that leave her? On the outside, looking in as usual. She absently wiped her sweaty palms on her skirt as she worried.
“Next up,” Veil said. “Hmmm, I pick…Darcira!”
Oh storms, here we go. Which Herald was the least likely to get her in trouble? Certainly not Chanarach or Vedel, and her mind went blank when she tried to think of a skill that the others wouldn’t know… “Shalash?”
“Aw, come on!” Ishnah complained, but Veil nodded approvingly.
“It’s a good frostmelter. Tell us a truth we don’t know about you. If any of us know it, you have to drink. But if we don’t know it, we all have to drink.”
Darcira was sure she was the most boring person alive. She knew these were supposed to be interesting! “Well,” she said, bringing her knees tighter to her chest, “the first time I ever Soulcasted something, it was completely by accident. It was Mother’s birthday, and her very favourite food is sweet kumaballs. I wanted to make it for her, but we were out of lavis. So, I held the empty jar in my hands and prayed to the Almighty to give me a miracle. I heard a voice asking for change, and, well, I’m sure you know the rest. I heard a pop, and when I opened my eyes, the room was dark and the jar was full of lavis!”
“Did you make the kumaballs with it? How did it taste?” Beryl asked.
“Oh, it didn’t taste especially good,” Darcira said, smiling wryly as she remembered. “But Mother says it’s the best birthday present she ever got.”
The others awwed and clapped, and as they all took drinks, Darcira started to relax. Beryl’s smile especially seemed so inviting, Darcira decided maybe she could join her on the floor.
. . .
As Darcira joined her, Beryl took a long draught of wine to show her appreciation for the story. Darcira really was very sweet, and the story had just made it more apparent. “It’s your turn to choose someone,” she reminded her.
“Oh! How about you then?” Darcira asked. “If you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind,” Beryl chuckled, then gave Ishnah a fleeting, but meaningful, look. Before the party, they had each admitted a certain truth to each other, and had offered to give each other help. “I choose Chanarach.”
The others oooohed. “Darcira, you have to make up a rule for Beryl to follow!” Veil explained. “What will you have her do? You could make her say ‘yes Brightness’ after everything you say.”
Ishnah clapped her hands. “No no I’ve got it! How about every time Beryl wants to say something, she has to whisper it to Darcira first for her permission.”
Beryl laughed, but inside she was thanking Ishnah. “Yeah, I’d do that!” she said casually.
“Oh, that seems like…a lot,” Darcira said quietly. Storms, she was so shy. It was adorable.
Ishnah reconsidered. “Okay, how about this, Darcira: Whenever you want, you can whisper something to Beryl, and then she has to say it on your behalf. Doesn’t matter how vulgar or rude.”
“Do it!” Veil said, swinging her bottle around.
Beryl reflected on the fact that she was so very grateful for her friends.
“Okay,” Darcira said, looking down. “Not every time, right? Just when I want?’”
“You’re the boss!” Beryl said.
Darcira met her eyes, and her heart fluttered. Then to her great joy, Darcira leaned in and whispered, “Tell them I’ll do it.” Darcira’s nose brushed against her hair.
“She says she’ll do it!” Beryl announced. Storms, it was starting to feel warm in here.
. . .
“Your turn!” Ishnah announced to Beryl. “I think you should choose Veil. She’s hardly had a chance to drink.”
“Or make any of you drink,” Veil swaggered.
“Veil,” Ishnah said, and pointed at her. “Choose your Herald.”
She was ready with an answer, of course. “Vedel,” she announced.
Darcira blushed.
Ishnah's heart skipped a beat. This is it!
Beryl grinned. “You have to kiss…Ishnah!”
Thank you Beryl, Ishnah thought. You blessed woman.
“I accept the challenge,” Veil said, then looked to Ishnah. "Do you?"
"In the spirit of competition, I accept," Ishnah nodded graciously, but she was singing inside.
They were already side by side on the bed, but it wasn’t close enough for Veil. She got up on her knees, then swung a trousered leg over Ishnah’s lap. She took her by the cheeks, leaned in with a smile, and gave her a long, searing kiss that made Ishnah feel the heat between Veil’s legs where she straddled her.
Ishnah couldn’t contain her dumb smile after that. Veil patted her cheek, then got off her. Beryl winked at her, and Darcira was staring with her mouth open. After a moment, she leaned over to Beryl and whispered in her ear.
“Darcira says that was hot,” Beryl said, and then the two of them cheersed and took a drink.
Ishnah was inclined to agree.
. . .
Veil could feel the smoothness of Ishnah’s lipstick on her face mixing with the warmth of wine in her belly. This was going very very well. “I choose Ishnah next,” she said, only slightly slurring.
Ishnah grinned. “Chanarach.”
Veil looked her up and down. “Every time someone says ‘storms’ you have to undo a button on your havah.”
Darcira gasped.
“Oh, it’s that kind of night,” Beryl giggled. “Do it Ishnah!”
“Yeah, I'll do it,” Ishnah grinned. Veil knew she would. After that kiss, all of Veil’s suspicions had been confirmed. They were going to get sloppy tonight.
Darcira whispered in Beryl’s ear, and Beryl laughed uproariously.
“What did she say?” Veil asked, but Beryl wasn’t able to contain her laughter long enough to talk. “You have to drink if you can’t say it!” she called out, pointing at Beryl.
Beryl took a long drink to calm her laughter. Then she looked at Ishnah. “Darcira says storms storms storms storms storms storms storms!”

Did you know water heater stands cost like $30?
I've never been happier about an immediate issue in my life. I can afford $30 right now. The rest of it can wait until we've had time to recover and save up.
I probably do need to do something about those deck beams sooner than later though. I'll figure out how one water proofs and reinforces that once the wood rot has already set it. That can be my overwinter project to figure out because my guess is I can't realistically do it until after frostmelt anyway. Hopefully one more year won't do in the deck lol.
We need to get a few pipes flows graded because it looks like all the slopes are the wrong angles and are backing up into their respective pipes, but that just means slow draining for a while and making sure we treat the pipes to prevent clogging while we save up for that. Most of it should be quick easy stuff, under the sinks and all, and only a few should involve having to go into the actual gummyworks of the house. Those will be the much later projects, and the sink stuff can happen earlier probably.
It's gonna be nice to have a home again and feel like I get to take proper care of it. Make it what I want and need it to be, now that I know more about how to do that. I'm really looking forward to making this place feel like home.

No worries or rush or etc if this doesn’t hit your fancy but for a prompt: Kaeya - nightmares - hurt/comfort?
HELLO HI DEAR THANK U THANK U this was a fun lil piece, i hope you enjoy it!!
tiny, quiet hours of the night - T - 1.4k
tags: established relationship, canon divergence, nightmares, slight hurt/comfort (but mostly the comfort part)
--
His heart aches for Kaeya on these nights, the ones where the Abyss refuses to release him, refuses to let him rest. It’s been better lately, but it does not make these nights any less painful.
Kaeya wakes from a nightmare, and Diluc does his best to comfort him.
[read on ao3]
--
Diluc wakes with a sharp breath, brows furrowed as awareness filters in.
Cold - that’s the first thing he notices. The blankets no longer cover his chest, and he blinks his eyes open to find-
“Kaeya?” His voice is still scratchy with sleep, but he pushes himself up to where Kaeya sits in the middle of the bed. He doesn’t look over, remains painfully still with knees pulled up to his chest and arms wrapped tightly around them. It’s colder here, Diluc can feel the ice radiating from Kaeya’s skin, but he inches closer regardless.
“Don’t.” Quiet, sharp, and Diluc stills with his fingers just a moment away from brushing Kaeya’s skin. “Too cold.”
He sees it now, the prickle of frost along Kaeya’s bare skin, sparkling gently from the glow of the moon seeping through the window. In place of reaching out to touch him, Diluc lets a gentle warmth radiate from his palm.
Kaeya sucks in a sharp breath, but does not pull away from Diluc, and the frost begins to melt. It drips in tiny beads of water down his arm, and Diluc shifts his palm to hover over a new patch of skin.
It is in this way that Kaeya begins to thaw, and his grip on his knees loosens slightly as the ice gives way to tracks of cool water that drip down onto the bed, onto the blanket, and Diluc does not care enough to worry if they’ll regret it later.
“Another nightmare,” he says once he’s certain that Kaeya is no longer at risk of freezing to death in the middle of their bed.
He doesn’t speak, just nods very gently, and Diluc leans in. Lets his palm - cooled, now - press lightly to the bare expanse of Kaeya’s back.
“No,” Kaeya says aloud, then, just as Diluc’s lips part. His eye flicks over to catch Diluc’s, and the barest hint of a smirk touches his lips. “I don’t particularly want to talk about it.”
Diluc shuts his mouth, nods at Kaeya.
His heart aches for him on these nights, the ones where the Abyss refuses to release him, refuses to let him rest. It’s been better lately, but it does not make these nights any less painful.
After a time, though Diluc does not know how long, Kaeya shifts again. He releases his legs, finally, and they fall to the side as he leans into Diluc, and it is like breathing to pull Kaeya into his chest, to press a kiss to his frostmelt-damped hair.
“It’s childish, I think,” Kaeya says quietly, and Diluc’s brows furrow. “To wish that it would all just stop already.” A huffed breath that might be his attempt at laughter.
“The nightmares?”
A subtle nod.
“But life is not so simple, certainly not for me.” Kaeya’s voice takes on that painfully amused tone, the one that turns his words dismissive and resigned. “It’s a naive thing, to wish it all gone in the blink of an eye.”
And Diluc does not know what to say to that, for Kaeya isn’t wrong. The world is not a kind place, has not been gentle with either of them, least of all Kaeya - perhaps that’s the very reason for his childish desire.
But simplicity has never been a part of their vocabulary, he supposes. In place of words, he pulls Kaeya tighter against his chest.
“You should rest,” Kaeya says quietly, even as he curls further into Diluc’s chest. “I didn’t mean to wake you.” And still Kaeya clings tighter, and Diluc runs a hand through his hair.
“I can’t help when I’m asleep,” he says decisively, and Kaeya huffs out another amused sort of breath.
“If you sleep, then at least one of us will be well-rested.”
“I’d rather be awake with you.” It’s an easy truth, and Diluc considers that perhaps some things are far simpler than he’d been prepared to claim. Some things persist, some things defy pain and heartbreak and choose instead to endure. Some things live at the core of Diluc’s entire being, a truth so unshakably certain that no twisted path can force it to shatter.
“Come on, let’s get you some tea.” A pause, and Kaeya makes a distinctly disapproving noise. “I’m not giving you wine at this hour, and besides,” he shifts his hand, presses it flat to the mattress. Grimaces at the cool touch of water that’s seeped in. “This isn’t exactly a comfortable place to stay.”
Kaeya heaves a long-suffering sigh, a sure sign that he’s already on the end of forcing his nightmares back, then crawls from Diluc’s arms toward the edge of the bed. Glances back over his shoulder, lips twisted.
“Will you keep me warm?”
“Always.”
A smirk tugs at Kaeya’s lips, and he shoves the blanket aside and stands. Bypasses the wardrobe and heads for the door, and Diluc stands to follow him.
------
He returns from the kitchen with two cups of tea in hand to find Kaeya already settled on the sofa, a blanket tucked around his shoulders. He glances up at Diluc’s approach, and his distantly neutral expression shifts into a soft smile.
It’s a rare thing, that smile - genuine, like it was when they were kids, and Diluc melts in its presence. He hands over Kaeya’s tea and does not bother warning him of its heat - he’ll drink it regardless, and demand that Diluc keep him warm all the same.
Kaeya requests that quietly, though, by way of lifting the blanket enough for Diluc to climb under it, to settle at his side and pull him close. It’s second nature at this point, to raise his body temperature just enough to warm them both, and Kaeya hums as he leans into Diluc’s side.
It takes until he’s halfway finished with his tea before he shifts again.
“Do you ever wish we could go back, Luc?” Quiet, a little wistful. Diluc glances over to find him staring at his mug, gaze a bit distant. It sharpens, though, as he turns to Diluc. “Back to when we were kids? It was easier, wasn’t it?”
Diluc nods without thinking - it undoubtedly was.
“But I don’t know if I would want to return,” he says, and Kaeya’s lips press into a line. Curl up just barely at the corners.
“I know.” His thumb brushes along the side of his mug, slow and rhythmic, and Diluc sets his hand gently on his arm. He stills, then, and his smile widens just a bit. “I suppose it would be quite painful to return to our childhood.”
“Painful?” Diluc scoffs, and Kaeya glances over. Leans in, and Diluc goes easily into the brief, warm kiss.
“I wouldn’t have done that when we were kids. Just thought about it.” A pause, and he tips his head. “A lot.” Although it’s Kaeya speaking, Diluc’s face flushes with warmth - he was perhaps also a guilty of such daydreaming...
“In any case, I wouldn’t trade it for where we are now,” he continues, and Diluc exhales a sharp breath. Something like relief, perhaps even just that they’ve changed the topic back to less...embarrassing territory.
An elbow connects with his ribs, then, sharp but not so much as to cause any damage, and Diluc frowns in Kaeya’s direction. Finds a bright blue eye staring at him, accompanied by a smirk on Kaeya’s lips, and Diluc sets his jaw. He’s certainly familiar with what comes after such a look.
“Come on, Luc, don’t tell me you didn’t think about it too.”
“I have no idea what you’re referring to,” he says quickly, and knows that he does not convince Kaeya with those words. Still, he’ll make the attempt to salvage his pride, at least.
“Didn’t you ever fantasize about kissing me, hm?” The mug lands with a thunk on the table, and Kaeya turns to face Diluc properly. “Never thought about my hands on your body, or being pinned to the ground beneath me while we sparred?” His gaze turns devious, and when he climbs into Diluc’s lap, Diluc cannot say that he detests it.
“No? Hm, what about my hands in your hair, combing through it?” He does it as he speaks, gentle and warm in a way that lights Diluc’s body on fire. “Pulling it?” Sharp sparks of pain that do little to cool him, and his hands settle on Kaeya’s thighs.
“I thought about that, too,” he says with a lazy smirk. “You were always so gentle with me,” he muses as Diluc leans close, as his breath ghosts across the now-warmed planes of his chest. “I wondered if you’d ever-” A sharp gasp as Diluc sinks his teeth in, intentional in his timing, and Kaeya coughs out a breathless laugh.
“But I suppose some things take time,” he adds as he shifts on Diluc’s lap, and Diluc’s fingers dig into his thighs. “And for you, Luc, I was always happy to wait.”

ok no one asked but i want to talk about my months. i’ll even be nice and put it under the cut so you don’t have to endure a long post on your dash
so. the calendar is pretty wonky when you compare it to ours.
first of all, their year starts with the beginning of spring being the first day of the first month, Frostmelt. and then it goes from there.
the weeks are only five days long, and there’s six weeks in a month, amounting to thirty days in each month, with the standard twelve months in the year.
but wait! they have two week-long months called Planting Days and Harvest Days respectfully, and its like at the time of the year to plant/harvest crops and they’re a time for hard work. (the week after the harvest days, though, is usually one of celebration) so technically there’s fourteen months.
so that’s approximately 370 days in a year, but the thing is, the rotation of their planet takes a bit longer than ours. so what they do is they take the last month, Year’s End, and they basically extend it until spring arrives. so there’s not a set 30 days in the month. the month lasts until spring comes. could be 30 days, could be 40-50, could be 22, it all depends. scholars and farmers can usually predict with a few day’s accuracy when winter’s going to end, though.
hrrrmmmm what else is there. i guess the months themselves??
in order from beginning of the year to the end of the year, it goes
Frostmelt
Raindance
Planting Days
Summerbloom
Sun’s Peak
Warmwind
Mid Year
Summerset
Harvest Days
Redleaf
Lightfrost
Snowfall
Icefeld
Year’s End
Edit: i might switch the planting days with summerbloom, bc summerbloom roughly corresponds with may and up here at least you shouldn't plant until the end of may bc it still frosts until then
(chinhands) HRRRRMMMMMMMM

Summary/Excerpt:
There’s beads of condensation on their raincoat that glisten as they move, drips down their collar occasionally and leaves the feeling of frostmelt on their skin. Guang-Hong doesn’t mind that much. Although irritating, it’s something that keeps them awake, wide-eyed and observant, and for that they’re willing to sacrifice even the least mundane of comforts in a place like this; they’d noticed, while in the field—the charge in the air isn’t just from the eminent rains.
(It's in a small village tucked nigh perfectly between the foot of two hills, locked forever in a slow-moving manner of life, that Guang-Hong meets a painter named Leo and a means of trouble that could only be described as magical.)
