Queer friends to lovers is actually a superior trope. When they know eachother the best it's like they're communicating telepatically, when they have many inside jokes that only they can understand. The slowest slow burn, the angst and the jealousy. Even better when they don't understand why they're getting jealous at first and are still in denial about it.
The "what if it's just platonic and I'm making up stuff?". YEARNING AND LONGING. Dreaming about one another, or looking at eachothers' lips, or just starting at one another while trying to pretend that they're not hopelessly in love with them. The PINING. The " what if they're straight?".
Friends to lovers is just superior especially when it's queer.

Hello!
Can I request a list of prompts based on the trope of an office romance? Also if possible can you add the trope of rivals to lovers, that is if you are ok with it. 😊
'sure ૮ ˶´ ᵕˋ ˶ა !!'
office rivals to lovers
prompt list by @bonbonbee
they're your superior and have been assigned to manage you. "you're a mess." "correction. i'm your mess."
"here's the report you wanted." flip, flip "2 pages? that's cute cupcake, it's also not going to make the cut."
"i got zero sleep last night completing my paperwork. i feel like crap." "you look like it, too." they did not think that, in fact, they wish they were with you in bed that morning to see your adorable morning face.
pov: you had to stay at the office working overtime on a company project. they see you at your desk on their way out, your eyelids drooping. sigh "i know we're not friends or anything, but we are coworkers so let me help."
gulp "hey, uhm, you want coffee or something? they fixed the coffee machine yesterday." "you want to get me coffee?" i want you. "correct."
"you are possibly the most vexing individual i've ever met. and mind you i know a lot of people! and don't even get me started on the way you speak."
pov: you're telling your work-best friend about your newest talking stage until they hear. "this isn't show and tell, miss." "you're just jealous." "maybe i am." "what was that?" "go back to your work, (last/name).
"shoot! i missed the bus!", you yell out. "stranded, ms. (l/n)?" you sigh, it just had to be them, right? turning around you spoke, "no." obviously you were stuck, for god's sake, it was raining in a big city! "need a ride then?" they smirked, and you caught onto the obvious innuendo. the car ride was silent, but those gossiping hens at the office definitely were not.
you were currently on cloud 9, floating in the clouds. oh, how you wished you could nap like this for the rest of eternity. unfortunately, you were getting woken up by some honeyed voice you must say. who was that angelic being? "ms. (l/n)?" they tapped your shoulder. "ms. (l/n), please wake up." oh.
(meeting) "i'm pretty sure the presentation is on the screen not on ms. (l/n)'s face." "apologies, sir," they uttered.
"hey, what time do you get off?" "6 PM." "what a coincidence, me too!" "what exactly are you trying to pull here, (last name)?"

New game! Forbidden Magic, by Frances Pauli
New game! "Forbidden Magic" by Frances Pauli is now available on Steam, iOS and Android. It's 40% off until August 31.
As a paranormal agent, your job is to keep magic under wraps. Can you catch a magical arsonist before you lose your heart?
Forbidden Magic is a 145,000-word interactive paranormal romance game by Frances Pauli, author of Brimstone Manor. It's entirely text-based, without graphics or sound effects, and fueled by the vast, unstoppable power of your imagination.
You’re a mage on parole for a crime you didn’t commit. Or, maybe you did, but you certainly didn’t intend to get caught. For penance, you’ve been assigned to the Organization for the Protection of Sorcerous Secrets, a task force dedicated to keeping the paranormal out of the public eye.
The vampire who works in the basement is out to get you. Your boss is literally a devil. And they’ve assigned you a hellhound for a partner, a shapeshifter who just happens to be your high-school crush. (Or, choose your own background! Maybe you were the hellhound’s crush? Or perhaps you were rivals, instead?)
Whether you use your superior sleuthing skills, rely on some magic of your own, or resort to dirty tactics, it’s not the worst gig. Hunting down rogues and mopping up public displays of magic could even be fun. But when a magical arsonist goes on a rampage, you'll need all the help you can get to keep the city safe and to keep your secrets, even if it means working with a human from a rival agency.
The closer you get to finding the arsonist, the closer you get to losing your heart. You used to be very close with the hellhound-shifter who’s now your OPSS partner. Could there be the sparks of something more? Your job is to keep magic out of mortal hands, but wouldn't it be nice to put yourself in the hands of that tall, broad-shouldered rival agent? Or perhaps you'll take this opportunity to seduce your boss, the dazzlingly competent and even more dazzlingly dressed devil? And then there’s the suspect whose vulnerability just might melt your heart…
• Play as male, female, or non-binary; gay, straight, or bi.
• Romance a shifter, devil, mage, or even an ordinary human.
• Choose your relationship trope: friends-to-lovers, friends-to-enemies-to-lovers, second-chance romance, and more.
• Choose your magical specialty and build your power!
• Investigate crime in a hidden magical part of the city: fey-owned nightclubs, elf-run diners, secret government agencies, and more.
• Work to keep magic a secret, or unleash forbidden knowledge into the wider world.
As the city burns, let your heart catch fire!

continuing from this post, i think i’ve figured out why i ship talisto and i blame it all on holly black: jude duarte and cardan greenbriar are talia and mephisto coded.
lemme try to explain the dynamics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jude & Talia
What’s there to say? They’re both badass strategists and natural-born leaders. They will make themselves heard and will not take nor tolerate bullshit. They are both clever with their plans and also don’t trust easily. Their guards are up constantly and they don’t tell their allies/friends everything (ie Jude’s coup and the whole Princess Brenda thing). They have also adapted to the rapid and traumatic changes in their lives — Jude with the murder of her parents and Talia with the fall of Xeris — and of course the adapting to a new world.
Sure, Jude takes things to an extreme by pursuing murder on occasion, but you can’t tell me that Talia wouldn’t do the same in her shoes (albeit with some hesitancy, but none the less will do so as a last resort). These two girls are a force to be reckoned with, and do all the research necessary to make sure they know all the facts and know all the plays to win.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cardan & Mephisto
I don’t need to explain this. It’s so obvious that Holly went so far as to basically make Mephisto Cardan’s faceclaim.
Cardan and Mephisto are both younger siblings, so they are familiar with the shadow of their older — and better, in the eyes of their father figures or something — siblings. They also both have no shame in being the villain of their stories while also being sorta carefree and charismatic I MEAN LOOK AT THEM!! But they also, deep in the core of their soul, have goodness and love inside, and a strong urge to protect and sacrifice everything for those closest to them (Jude and Praxina respectively). They grow over the duration of their screentime/booktime into lovable and openly more caring characters.
Seriously guys the parallels between them are right fucking there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jurdan & Talisto
What else can I say? Enemies-to-lovers is the superior trope and if the Jurdan dynamic — while slightly questionable bc ✨bully romance✨ and just general canonical confusion — doesn’t give you tingles, imagine the applied to Talisto’s already current dynamic. I can already see Talia’s fuming face ready to absolutely destroy Mephisto and his obnoxious, degrading laughter as he walks away in Faerieland during their lessons. I can also see how the turns have tabled with Talia holding a knife to Mephisto’s neck and Talia’s grinning face as she pulls of the greatest coup in history…
I guess what I’m saying is that I would not be opposed to a Talisto Cruel Prince AU because it just makes sense.

I've never found Pansy interesting and don't know why so much of the fandom like her. But since you'll be writing a Panville fic, I'm willing to give it a shot. I'm Genuinely curious about what you like about her. Could you give us some of the reason why you like her?
so, i'm going to get on a soapbox for a second (or a high horse)
first off, i don't think your message was combative or confrontational in any way! but i do get a little defensive when it comes to some of my preferred ships/characters (especially female characters) because i shouldn't have to justify why i like them or why i find a story arc with them as the central focus interesting. you know?
however, seeing as you do seem genuinely curious, i think it is two fold.
there is a quote from JKR about pansy and it goes something like this: "I loathe Pansy Parkinson. I don’t love Draco but I really dislike her. She’s every girl who ever teased me at school. She’s the Anti-Hermione. I loathe her." now on the surface this is a whatever statement right? how could we disagree with it? of course we loathe pansy, the narrative *wants* us to loathe pansy. she's mean! but when i think about it longer than thirty seconds i get a little cringed out. because when i was a teen, i was the anti-hermione. i liked fashion, and makeup, and traditionally feminine things, i had a large group of friends and i liked my boyfriend. i was popular in the traditional sense of the word. i don't think i was a mean girl but who hasn't ever, in their life, been mean? so does the narrative (author) loathe me as well? i feel similarly about pansy that i do about lavender, that they were written from a place of deep misogyny and by a person who bought into the YA trend that main female characters needed to *not be like other girls* to be interesting.
the other half of my enjoyment of pansy & panville is that i don't like caricatures, and i really like redemption stories. genuinely. and as a fic writer, and a person who enjoys complex characters, typically the worse a character can start out, the more i want to push every button they have until they start learning some life lessons. pansy is PERFECT for this type of story. she was awful. she was raised to be the most bigoted, vapid, vain, conniving, prejudiced bully imaginable. she tried to hand harry over to voldemort! she is every resentment and insecurity rowling had as a middle schooler personified. so, if i take all of that, and try to fit it into as realistic as a person as i can, wouldn't pansy's mindset post-war be fascinating?? does she double down on dogma and hatred, or does she start to see a life and a world without division and is desperate not to be left behind? does she remain selfish and superior? or does she maybe learn there is more than one way to be good and brave? there are facets to her personality that are very queen bee-esque and despite her many flaws and failures, she still has strengths. using subtext, and a little of my own personal experiences, we can deduce that she is: confident, driven, calculating, sometimes wildly ignorant, and not very nice. in terms of a romantic story she is exploding with potential for an opposites attract (hate to love) scenario. neville is humble, content, morally steadfast, and most of all he's kind. pansy can learn a lot from him, but at the same time, neville could benefit from someone who won't coddle his more... wallflower(?) tendencies.
now i won't go into my entire history with hp fanfiction (unless you have enough time to hear ten years worth of experiences) however, i've become pretty attached to this little corner of fic for the reasons stated above. it's no secret that i like redemption stories and enemies to lovers as a romance trope. that's just what *i* enjoy. you do not have to enjoy it. but i do think it is important to think critically about the source material before deciding whether something is worth exploring or not.
i'll leave it with this, rowling has stated on the record that: "Let my girls be Hermiones, rather than Pansy Parkinsons. Let them never be Stupid Girls." and this bothers the shit out of me. i don't think girls should be hermiones or pansys or ginnys or whatever the fuck. i think girls should be whoever they are and not get told that their interests, or their experiences, or their stories are unworthy of being told because they aren't the smartest person in the room. so not only is pansy an interesting character for me to explore, she also feels like a wrong that i can make right. however small of an imprint that leaves on the world. pansy feels like a representation of what femininity is when it is defined at its worst and i intend to tear it to fucking shreds.
TLDR; pansy reinforces girl on girl hate for no other reason than vilification of teenagers, redemption arcs are fucking fire, and the idea of one character's weaknesses being another character's strength is SUCH a good foundation for romance.
thanks for the question <3

TW: slurs, death threats, typical bullying stuff
on my 11th birthday, during 5th grade, there was this giant fight between my classmates because a friend of my bully told my friend that he liked her but because she was associated with me, his friends got mad at him and then my friend's friend got mad at him which caused his friends to be mad at her and it sorta spiraled from there with my classmates getting into fights over crushes and I watched the chaos unfold
at the time, I didn't know that I was aro, and both at the time and now I thought it was an over-exaggeration, but I still don't quite think that would've been the normal situation if my bullies weren't so dramatic so it's probably not an allo thing and was just a "these specific people are weird" kinda thing
anyway, because of this fight, people started making assumptions about who had a crush on who, it was weird, but eventually someone got to me and assumed I had a crush on my bully and I was so genuinely hurt by that that I almost punched the guy in the face, the only thing stopping me was school rules against physical violence (verbal death threats and drawing yourself murdering a classmate are okay but tag is banned bc someone tagged a little too hard once).
I've seen so many other aros talk about how enemies to lovers is the superior trope, but as someone with experience of having someone that wanted me dead, tried to get everyone else to turn against me, and frankly made my life a living hell while I also hated him for what he would do to me and wanted so badly for him to disappear (aka, an enemy), I could never get behind the enemies to lovers trope. To me, it sounds like rebranded "he's only bullying you because he likes you!" I see nothing wrong with liking stories like that but the amount of the conversation that goes "it is objective fact that enemies to lover is the only good romance trope" is troubling to me (or even worse: "much more relatable/realistic"). It's never "I like enemies to lovers more than other tropes," it is always objective language used. It feels like that classmate telling me that I must have a crush on the guy that called me dyke and fag because that's "just how it works." I'm not mad at anyone who likes the enemies to lovers trope, there is no possible way they could know who I am or how it affects me and I'm not gonna tell someone to stop enjoying something because I don't like it. I know people are going to get defensive about this so I want to make it very clear that I have no ill will to anyone and maybe you don't see this trope this way and that's fine, fiction is very much open to interpretation. I just wanted to get my thoughts about it out there and maybe there will be someone who can relate, maybe I can help others who feel the same feel less alone.
this is also not a invitation to argue or debate this with me, I could never be in the right headspace to defend how my trauma affected me, so please don't tell me I'm wrong about something this subjective and personal. I'm not trying to say anyone who likes enemies to lovers is wrong or morally corrupted or that they've never been bullied or harassed, this is just my experience. I know I sound like a broken record with that but I really just want to make it clear.

Remaking the HIStory Franchise
For @heretherebedork who likes to challenge me (off the back of this post.) More fantasy remakes of BLs!
I took this as a double dare: Who would fix it? is my main challenge. Because MUCH of the HIStory franchise is in need of fixing. But also, who would make it worse? This time, I took Taiwan out of the remake running (this is their franchise) but I got to put Korea in! He he, that means I have WATCHA to play with. This’ll be fun.
HIStory My Hero
Tumblr media
Who gets it? Korea’s Hwang Da Seul
Body swap, friends to lovers, university set, soft, sweet low heat. No side dishes. No triggers. But then the original is also not quite BL and not particularly romantic. Girl dies and her consciousness transfers into in the body of the boy who (maybe) had a crush on her boyfriend. She has a week to make her old boyfriend fall in love with her new body. I'm not a fan of body swap but I think I want Korea to try it on for size. I’d hand this one off to Hwang Da Seul partly because she picks really GOOD actors, and that’s required for body swap to work. I don’t feel she has to reuse a pair for it, though, and I’d be fine if she wanted to age up the characters.
Who’d fuck it up? GMMTV, they flipping can’t handle body swap, I wish they’d stop trying.
HIStory Stay Away From Me
Tumblr media
Who gets it? 02 Productions in Vietnam
University nerd's dad marries actor idol's mom and moves the now stepbrothers in with each other. It's a cohabitation romance with the stepbrothers trope on a classic popular/nerd, sunshine/tsundere pairing. It’s a perfect vehicle for Vietnam. They would add more and better kisses for a superior ending, plus good domesticity, and give it a bit more length. Bah Vinh hasn’t played an idol character yet (right?) and I think he would be VERY good in that roll.
Who’d fuck it up? Japan. I don’t know why they can’t handle celebrity romances but they REALLY can’t (see Given & Love Stage).
HIStory Obsessed
Tumblr media
Who gets it? The MoD Triage people in Thailand
Uke obsessed with seme to the point of losing himself and his identity dies after being rejected, and then has a chance to reboot his life. He decides to save himself by never falling in love. But destiny is a bitch, and this time the seme becomes obsessed with him. I think mad good things could be done with this story line if it were extended out bu Thailand. It’s fun and complex. So I’m giving it to Thailand’s premier fun and complex peeps. Go forth and multiply!
Who’d mess it up the most? Cheewin and COPY definitely. I shudder to think.
HIStory 2: Right or Wrong
Tumblr media
Who gets it? Japan, the studio who did Old Fashion Cupcake
It's a teacher/student power dynamic, tsundere/sunshine pairing, plus cohabitation with themes of self acceptance and family domesticity. It's a slow burn but high heat (and that heat is good). The uke is out gay, the seme is unapologetically bi. Japan already loves a teacher student age gap pairing and this is right in their wheelhouse. They won’t shy away from the implications and I want them to confront their own social issues and restrictions with regards to gay marriage... which they would. I like the original, but I think this would be a whole lot better, actually.
Who’d mess it up the most? Korea probubly, they can’t handle questionable content dynamics, they get to scared, teacher/student + gay would probubly break them. Although there is a part of me that wants to see them try... and squirm.
HIStory 2: Crossing the Line
Tumblr media
Who gets it? WATCHA in Korea
This is sports romance (volleyball) with a good boy/bad boy pairing is my favorite of the franchise. There no clear seme/uke. There's great kisses but it's medium heat. The side dishes are the stepbrother trope but they’re very tame, and there’s no other triggers in this BL. I have to give it to the studio that doesn’t fuck up, WATCHA.
Who’d mess this one up the most? Easy, MAME.
HIStory 3: Make Our Days Count
Tumblr media
AKA HIStory 3 The BL That Shall Not Be Named
Who gets it? It has to go to GMMTV.
I say that knowing the best thing about the original was the authenticity of the heat levels, so it should go to Cheewin or MAME, BUT they’d fuck up the characters, so... GMMTV gets it. Purely on the grounds that they would fix that ending. (They don’t do sad BL.) Also they have a deep actor pool to pull from for the cast, I’d like Aof to direct so it retains its depth. It doesn’t have to be high school, I’d bump this one up to university and hand it off to a really seasoned team. Also I think the seme character MUST stay himbo, so EathMix can’t take on this show. It’s gotta go to someone who can do physical and emotional comedy, that’s why I chose Tay. Could he be opposite Gun for this? That’d be fun. I’ve always wanted them to play off each other.
Who’d mess this one up the most? Obviously Wabi Sabi, they keep creating sad things these days, they’d just dwell in that stupid ending forever.
HIStory 3: Trapped
Tumblr media
Who gets it? Japan’s Life: Love on the Line team.
Look, I have been wanting a yakuza BL from Japan forever. I dithered in a BIG way on this one. Despite the mafia theme, there are actually very few triggers and it's full consent and quite sweet for how much they throw in sexy. Lots of little domestic moments too. The ending needs to be resolved though and it needs higher production values but from someone who will not fart around too much with the story. I thought long and hard about Korea, but Strongberry already tried and I just don’t think they are ready.
Who’d fuck it up? Most of Thailand, frankly. It’s a marker of my mistrust these days that I couldn’t face handing this one off to Wabi Sabi. Once upon a time I might have. Vietnam definitely can’t do the production levels required.
HIStory 4: Close to You
Tumblr media
Who gets it? Cheewin and COPY A BANGKOK
There’s nothing wrong with the leads in this office set romance, but the side couple are stepbrothers as a grumpy/sunshine pairing, including obsession, dubious consent that went to the dark side. They need correcting and Cheewin has been really trying to correct for queer rep lately, so you know what? Let’s see what COPY could do with a proper office set romance. I mean Cheewin did do Why R U? and Cutie Pie there’s hope.
Who’d fuck it up? Star Hunter, can you imagine?

BL Recs - Office Romance
Anyone else loves a hot inappropriate office romance? 🌝 I’ve been exploring this genre in manga/manhwa for a while and have found so many gems! This trope usually walks hand in hand with light humour, flirty banter, enemies to lovers and cute slice-of-life (not to mention the sexy a/b/o dynamics!) which I absolutely love. These are all light and fun comfort reads, perfect choices as a palate cleanser between heavier, angsty stories. Here are some personal favourites - I hope you enjoy them!
Ameiro Paradox by Natsume Isaku
Tumblr media
A change in the stakeout team throws Onoe, reporter for a weekly magazine, together with his contemporary, Kaburagi, a photographer. Onoe secretly considers Kaburagi his rival, and Kaburagi's haphazard way of doing things goes against Onoe's strong sense of ethics--there's nothing but conflict between them. But, in joint pursuit of a scandal, the two of them begin to care about each other...?
Beta Off Not Dating by Mintran, Saena, Doojja
Tumblr media
Juhyeok is a clueless beta who is thrust into the messy world of alpha-omega dynamics when he leaves his wholesome beta college to work at a more diverse company. There, a full-on fistfight and loud makeup. Repulsed by the pheromones that trump common sense in this crazy environment, Juhyeok swears himself off dating until he saves up enough money to move to a faraway haven for betas.
Day Off by Qing Cai
Tumblr media
Sometimes sweet, sometimes sour, and always relaxing, this is a fluffy office romance about a powerful yet gentle superior (who’s occasionally a picky eater) and his cute and earnest subordinate (who’s a silly young Gemini).
Doushitemo Furetakunai by Yoneda Kou
Tumblr media
On his very first day at a brand-new job, shy Shima is trapped in the elevator with a hungover mess of a guy…who turns out to be his boss. Togawa’s prickly exterior definitely puts the rookie recruit on-edge, but it doesn’t take long before Shima’s every waking thought is invaded by his overbearing yet totally thoughtful superior.
It’s Not Like That by Gangto, Lime
Tumblr media
Under pressure from his unimpressed parents, BL writer Lim Iro is forced into applying for a “real” job. But instead of a cover letter, he accidentally submits an unreleased extract from his book instead. Disaster! Or maybe not…? Faced with Iro’s unconventional application, Baek Ho-ryung, the dashing CEO of Beus drinks company, is intrigued.
On or Off by A1
Tumblr media
Yiyoung is building a startup with his college friends. They get a chance to present their proposal to SJ Corporation, one of the leading companies in the country. But in the meeting room he sees Kang Daehyung, the extremely handsome company big shot that's very much his type.
Perfect Buddy by Lash, Daki
Tumblr media
Seo Hyunsoo is sure of one thing: people are scum and they will always disappoint you. Sure enough, at his very first company dinner after his transfer to a new department, he finds his coworker, the obnoxiously upbeat Baek Youngchan, performing an unsavory deed in the men's bathroom. As much as Hyunsoo would like to avoid Youngchan from that point on, Youngchan seems intent on not letting him out of his sight...
Punch Drunk Love by Moscareto
Tumblr media
Park Sunwoo, who prefers a pair of thick glasses and an awkward-fitting suit, is an employee of DM Electronics' Financial Accounting Team. While secretly spying on his unrequited love as usual, he finds out that Jung Taemoon enjoys promiscuous and rough one-night sex.
The New Recruit by Moscareto & Zec
Tumblr media
After spending his 20s getting over a crush, Seunghyun vowed to never give his heart to someone in the same field again. Enter Jongchan, Seunghyun's tough new boss with a surprising soft side.
You Get Me Going by Moscareto, Oh doyeon
Tumblr media
Despite being thirty-three, Young-won sure is gullible. He falls in love way too easily, comes on way too hard, and still believes that he’ll meet “Mr. Right” sooner or later. Not that he knows who “Mr. Right” is, but he sure does know about “Mr. Wrong,” a.k.a. Kang Hyun-woo. Young-won swears that he’ll never, ever get together with this polar opposite of his, but the universe sure seems to think different.

𝐓𝐇𝐈𝐒 𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐀𝐓 - 𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐏𝐄𝐒 𝐄𝐃𝐈𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍
slowburn or love at first sight (there's NOTHING better than months of plotting and rp coming to a head. you and a partner losing your shit like you didn't personally write the bastards making a first move. good stuff.)
fake dating or secret dating (both but something something realism. queer ships especially)
enemies to lovers or best friends to lovers (enemies to best friends to also lovers. looking at you caro...)
oh no there’s only one bed or long-distance correspondence (alt rp like letters or texts has had me in a chokehold in the past. only one bed is a very basic forced interaction trope)
hurt/comfort or amnesia (the amount of dynamics i have based on this..)
fantasy au or modern au (i like AUs, sue me)
mutual pining or domestic bliss (one followed by the other)
smut or fluff (not that interested in writing smut (with a few exceptions) ngl to you, tenderness is where it's at)
canon-compliant or fix-it (i write mostly oc's 🤷)
reincarnation or character death (obv, with the amount of muses i have who are connected to undeath somehow. character deaths are too final and man, writing them as a fitting end to a narrative and a character is TOUGH. it's also contrary to popular belief, by and large, not the worst thing you could do to a muse. so as a tool for tragedy it's mid sometimes.)
kid fic or road trip fic (?? ...it's a fanfic tropes meme i'm filling out for roleplay. idk.)
arranged marriage or accidental marriage (purely because the former implies political dynamics which are always fun to explore)
college romance or middle-aged romance (god, let people be in love in their 50s. i don't just mean middle aged couples married for a few years, i mean older adults finding love. it's always such a hard hitter)
time travel or isolated together (the SUPERIOR version of only one bed, but make it forced co-existing. better yet? forced co-existing for the sake of survival)
neighbors or roommates (again. co-existence. more chances for shenanigans)
sci-fi au or magic au (i love robots/androids/cyborgs too much not to have a bias but lbr, most of my stuff on here is some flavour of fantasy because it's way easier for me. wish i wrote better sci-fi but alas.)
angst or crack (pure unadulterated pain is the main tenet i operate based on. trite bullshit is good too though)
apocalyptic or mundane (slice of life just be cute as hell sometimes)

brutercup: problematic lesbians
brutercup is a little complicated. a lot complicated. they're not exactly good for each other and i don't want them to be x
hate at first sight. not even because of the good vs evil alignment, just because both their personalities are dominant + competitive - qualities that aren't necessarily bad, but are worsened by buttercup's slight superiority complex and brute's enjoyment of being on top. she doesn't like letting anybody win, which drives buttercup up the wall when she just can't.
it starts in the physical fight. but brute takes it out of the battlefield and into daily life. slips her way into buttercup's friend-groups, her hang-out spots, etc. (if i believed brute went to school i'd say she'd join buttercup's after school clubs too.) can drive buttercup out of her comfort zone just by existing, brute gets under her skin that easy. worse because brute probably enjoys seeing the reactions.
infatuation on brute's end. morbid fascination on buttercup's. leads into a very turbulent descent from enemies to something not-quite-friendly, not-quite-romantical; some kind of underlying tension, maybe even attraction. buttercup would refuse to acknowledge it for a while, and brute wouldn't really take the time to figure out what she feels, just knowing that whatever feelings/opinions she has make her want buttercup.
despite her cockiness, buttercup doesn't know what to do with attention when it's actually put on her. nevermind attention that is intense, unreadable, and persistent. it's easy to get to her from there: brute falls first + forces buttercup to stumble along after her.
i really like the trope of the 'degenerate x jock' with a corruption arc. buttercup doesn't have huge amounts of academic prowess to begin with, just makes it easier for brute to lead her further astray - especially by goading her into things buttercup usually has better self-control over.
their relationship would eventually begin to softe as they actually got to know each other beyond the unresolved tension. maybe brute would let buttercup win a little more, or buttercup would make what they have more of a game. cat and mouse/fox and hare. don't think the relationship would really lose its edge, though, which wouldn't allow them to truly settle comfortably; especially given that brute is an unapologetic criminal and buttercup is unwilling to stray too far from the path of righteousness.
there's also the fact that despite brute's bullying in the beginning, buttercup gives just as good as she gets. it's something that keeps things interesting, but also keeps either of them from losing too much ground. i don't think brute would ever concede to buttercup being her equal, which obv leaves them on uneven footing also.
still one of my favorite ships, maybe because of the complicatedness to it. not really romance, not really enemies-to-lovers. frenemies with benefits ??
which is also why i love greens^3 (brute x buttercup x butch). having a mediator really shifts the dynamic. 💚💚💚
maybe something on that next?

About one of my newest projects
Title: Jonas Corbin’s Guide to Life
Jonas Corbin’s sophomore year of high school is getting off to a good start - he’s been assigned the locker next to his childhood friend and long-time crush Kiera Bernhardt in the same year that Kiera’s rather intimidating older brother has gone off to college, giving him the perfect opportunity to confess his feelings. However, will he be able to talk to Kiera without choking? And why is their mutual friend Chloe suddenly being so harsh towards him? Tells the story of Jonas’ sophomore, junior, and senior years at Foxwood High School in New Hampshire.
Other things:
Lots of esoteric references, mostly to anime and JRPGs.
Some degree of fourth-wall awareness, but not to ridiculous levels.
Teen characters are treated with respect.
Despite being named after a specific character, has an ensemble cast. Jonas is the narrator, though.
Everyone is ****ed-up to some degree, just like in real life.
At the same time, no one is purely good or bad. Again, just like in real life.
Some supernatural elements, although most, if not all, of them would be Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane.
Musical numbers, not necessarily in every episode, but a decent number.
Starts out fairly lighthearted and gradually becomes darker throughout, possibly even with some deaths, but never loses its humorous side and ends on a hopeful note.
No one is beyond redemption, but not everyone accepts it.

Older Than They Look: In college, but has been mistaken for a high school student at least once.
Photographic Memory
Victorious Childhood Friend: To Adrian.
A Lighter Shade of Black: Mark and especially Connor are both Jerkasses, but they're nowhere near as bad as Nick and Jared.
Alliterative Family: The Beaumont siblings are named Joel, Jessica, and Jadyn.
Kyle Levy's deceased mother and sister were named Kellene and Kendra, respectively, although it's averted with his father Michael.
Amicable Exes: Jonas’ parents, at least to a degree.
Animesque
Beta Couple: Brad and Caitlyn become this for Jonas and Kiera.
Birds of a Feather: Brad and Caitlyn turn out to be this.
Birthday Buddies: Courtney Anderson and Jadyn Beaumont, both born on May 19.
Bisexual Love Triangle: Connor Urquhart has a crush on fellow Goth Christi Wong, but is also strongly implied to be mutually attracted to his best friend Mark Seaver.
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: Chloe, Kiera, and Alicia, respectively.
The cheerleaders Jessica, Nina, and Ashley also qualify.
Boke and Tsukkomi Routine: Jonas and Brad sometimes fall into this dynamic.
Bonding Over Dislikes: Logan and Christi first bonded over their shared dislike of "Relena Piece-of-Crap".
Mark and Connor first met at a ski lodge, where they bonded over a shared dislike of skiing.
Cracks In The Icy Facade: Connor is introduced as a cold, aloof Jerkass, but in an early episode, he helps an injured Courtney to the nurse's office and makes sure she's all right.
Dramedy
Dysfunctional Family: The Bernhardts, and really most families in this series in their own ways.
Ensemble Cast: Despite being named after Jonas, the core six (Jonas, Brad, Chloe, Kiera, Nate, and Alicia) all get roughly equal focus, and other characters also sometimes get A Day in the Limelight.
Feminine Mother, Tomboyish Daughter: Valerie and Chloe Seaver.
Five-Bad Band: Mark’s gang, initially. Can also be a Five-Man Band in episodes focusing on them.
The Big Bad: Mark Seaver (although he is, at worst, Affably Evil)
The Dragon: Nick Murphy
The Brute: Jared Murphy (of the Genius Bruiser type)
The Evil Genius: Connor Urquhart
Token Good Teammate: Lauren Reinholt
Kid-of-Heel Character: Jadyn Beaumont
Five-Man Band:
The Leader: Jonas Corbin
The Lancer: Brad Thompson
The Big Guy: Chloe Seaver (ironically, the shortest in the group)
The Smart Guy: Nate Kellerman
The Heart: Kiera Bernhardt
Sixth Ranger: Alicia Ramsey
Flirty Stepsiblings: Kyle Levy and Courtney Anderson, although most of the flirtation comes from Courtney.
Foolish Sibling, Responsible Sibling: Lydia and Shea Renfrew, respectively.
Gender-Equal Ensemble: The core six is composed of three boys (Jonas, Brad, and Nate) and three girls (Chloe, Kiera, and Alicia).
Headbutt of Love: Lydia does this to Morgan this a few times after they start dating.
Heel-Face Turn: After his failed suicide attempt and subsequent coma in season 2, Connor turns over a new leaf and goes from a gloomy, cynical Jerkass to a gloomy, cynical Jerk with a Heart of Gold.
I Call It "Vera": Adrian calls his car "Alcyone". It should be noticed that everyone in-universe thinks this is a terrible name… even Kiera, who normally worships the ground her big brother walks on.
Incest Subtext: Connor is implied, and eventually confirmed, to be attracted to his younger sister Morgan. This is part of why he hates himself, and why he's so cruel to her.
On the subject of Connor, Kiera has a crush on him because he gives off the same "vibes" as her brother. Take that as you will.
Intergenerational Friendship: Jonas forms one with Mr. Starovski, and Principal Mazlish to a lesser extent.
Jock Dad, Nerd Son: Jacob and Nate Kellerman.
Monster Brother, Cutie Sister: Connor and Morgan, and Adrian and Kiera to a lesser extent. It's worth noting that unlike most examples of this trope, Connor and Adrian are both very handsome.
Nice, Mean, and In-Between: For the boys, Nice Jewish Boy Nate Kellerman (nice), egotistical, mischievous Deadpan Snarker Jonas Corbin (mean), and Gentle Giant Lovable Jock Brad Thompson, who still isn't afraid to tell it like it is (in-between). For the girls, kind-hearted Animal Lover Alicia Ramsey (nice), Jerk with a Heart of Gold Chloe Seaver (mean), and gentle, but sometimes snarky, Team Mom Kiera Bernhardt (in-between).
The Anderson-Levy siblings also qualify, with sensitive literary-magazine editor Thom being the Nice, Jerk Jock Kyle being the Mean, and Courtney, who sometimes acts as a mediator between her older brothers and sometimes plays them against each other to watch the fireworks, being the In-Between.
Noodle Incident: Something that happened to the core six (minus Alicia) in eighth-grade science lab, which they have vowed never to talk about.
Not So Above It All: Although they're usually the voices of reason, Nate and especially Kiera both have their moments of this.
Odd Friendship: Jerk Jock with a Heart of Gold Mark Seaver and effeminate Goth boy Connor Urquhart.
One Degree of Separation: Most of the characters are linked to each other in a complex web of relationships.
Practically Different Generations: Jonas is ten years older than his half-sister Samantha, and Hannah Brooks is thirteen years older than her half-sister Renee.
Production Nickname: The Bernhardt siblings each have one. Kiera is "The Brocon Lacrosse Girl," due to her brother complex and passion for lacrosse, and Adrian is "The Anti-Fraggle" because he's tall, grim, and hates radishes, unlike the small, jolly, radish-loving Fraggles.
Red Oni, Blue Oni: Jared and Nick Murphy, respectively, with Mark Seaver as their Purple Oni.
Mark is also the Blue Oni to his sister Chloe's Red Oni, and the Red Oni to his best friend Connor's Blue Oni.
Logan is the Red Oni to most people, but the Blue Oni to his Genki Girl sister Saige.
Riddle for the Ages: How did someone as childish and irresponsible as Donna get primary custody of her son?
Why does Thom insist on spelling his name with a silent H?
Rivalry as Courtship: Chloe and Mia start out as athletic and romantic rivals, but eventually resolve it and become a couple.
Secret Diary: Connor has one which he keeps hidden in his dresser. However, it's later revealed to be not so secret to Morgan.
Shout-Out: A long-haired, drug-addicted alt guy named Connor, who has a bad reputation, a strained relationship with his sister, and a penchant for black nail polish… sound familiar?
Adrian's car has a "My Other Car Is A Gundam" frame around its license plate.
Because she doesn’t like the name Dandelion, Lauren secretly calls her family’s pet Pomeranian “Toby”.
Word of God has stated that Nate's Character Tic of tying his hair back when he's thinking is a reference to Violet's similar tic in A Series of Unfortunate Events.
Jessica Beaumont and Ashley Cournane are both named after fictional cheerleaders - Jessica Wakefield and Ashley Hammond, respectively.
Sickeningly Sweethearts: Michael Levy and Marissa Anderson.
Six-Student Clique:
The Head: Jonas Corbin
The Muscle: Brad Thompson
The Quirk: Nate Kellerman
The Pretty One: Alicia Ramsey
The Smart One: Kiera Bernhardt
The Wild One: Chloe Seaver
Slice of Life
Sliding Scale of Idealism Versus Cynicism: Falls somewhere in the middle, leaning slightly toward idealism.
The Glorious War of Sisterly Rivalry: Between Nina Chapman (The Smart One) and her older sister Zoe (The Popular One).
Theme Naming: The Urquhart siblings both have Celtic names that can be used as first or last names.
Those Two Guys: Josh Reilly and Robbie Wolfe.
¡Three Amigos!: Jonas, Brad, and Chloe, although somewhat disrupted by Chloe’s attraction to Jonas.
Town Girls: Chloe (butch), Kiera (neither), and Alicia (femme).
True Companions: The core six.
Vitriolic Best Buds: Jonas and Brad, and Kiera and Chloe to a lesser extent.
Wacky Parent, Serious Child: Donna and Jonas form a rare mixed-gender example.
White-and-Grey Morality: Jonas' relationship with Principal Mazlish applies, with the former being straight-up chaotic good and the latter being, at worst, lawful neutral.
World of Snark
Some tropes I want to include:
A Day in the Limelight
Amateur Film-Making Plot
“Anger Is Healthy” Aesop
Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other
Both Sides Have a Point
Brick Joke
Call-Back
Chain of Deals
Continuity Porn
Couch Gag
Did They or Didn't They?
Dumbass Has a Point / Jerkass Has a Point
Enemy Mine
Enmity with an Object
Evolving Credits
Fade to White: How the series ends, signifying Jonas' "ascent" into the world after high school.
Fair Play Whodunit: Maybe a spotlight episode for Josh and Robbie.
Ferris Wheel Date Moment: At first I wasn't sure this would work with Kiera's fear of heights, but I found out from the trope page that it's actually common for the girl to be acrophobic, so… ^_^
Flippant Forgiveness
Friendly Enemy / Reformed, but Not Tamed: This would eventually apply to the Murphy brothers.
Funny Background Event
Hard Truth Aesop: Abusive parents are still complex humans like everyone else.
Intergenerational Friendship
Joke and Receive
Leitmotif
Magic Realism
Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane
Mundane Made Awesome
Musical Episode: Also A Day in the Limelight episode for Mark and Connor, in which they form a band with Jared (lead guitar), Morgan (vocals), Alicia (keyboard), and maybe Christi (rhythm guitar).
Not So Above It All
Out-of-Character Alert
Parents as People
"Rashomon"-Style
RPG Episode
Saved by the Awesome
Shown Their Work
Something Only They Would Say
Spoof Aesop
Stealth Pun
Strange Minds Think Alike
Stylistic Suck
The Greatest Story Never Told
Thinks of Something Smart, Says Something Stupid
Unusual Euphemism
Vignette Episode
"What Do They Fear?" Episode: For Brad's arachnophobia, Kiera's acrophobia, Mark's claustrophobia, Connor's gephyrophobia, and/or Morgan's coulrophobia.
What You Are in the Dark
“Where Are They Now?” Epilogue
Whole Plot Reference
You All Share My Story
Tropes to avert:
A Weighty Aesop: And in the unlikely event that I were to do an episode with one, it would emphasize moderation rather than abstinence.
Anvilicious: Any and all morals should be as subtle as the B in the word "subtle," except for spoof morals.
Character Shilling
Diet Episode: See A Weighty Aesop, above.
Girls vs. Boys Plot
Hate Sink
Kids Shouldn’t Watch Horror Films
Limited Wardrobe
New Technology Is Evil
Pair the Spares
Real Men Have Short Hair: As a direct Take That! aimed at this trope, Jonas' hair gets slightly longer with each season as he matures, although the two factors are otherwise unrelated, and it's never mentioned in-universe.
Shipper on Deck
Social Media Is Bad
Strangled by the Red String
Teens Are Monsters
The Friend Nobody Likes
Where the Hell Is Springfield?: Foxwood is located somewhere in the Seacoast region of New Hampshire.

Oh. OH THIS TRIO IS PERFECT AND EVIL. All of them are so good for all three of the tropes???? Omfg, what are you doing to me, my dear, devious friend????
*ahem*
Slow Burn: Letant - As much of a flirt as he is, I can see Letant really, truly wanting to woo a person he's interested in for more than a fling. He'd take his time drawing them in, creating interest, and making them as curious about him as he is about them. Once they caught on that he was interested in them That Way, he'd totally go all out on the romance, but keep the pace slow - really drive his potential mate crazy with affection before falling into bed with them. He'd want them as desperate for him as he was for them.
Fake Date: Shran - Realistically, I know that he and Letant would probably be swapped, but...but can't you just imagine how smooth Shran would be??? He'd see this as an interesting opportunity to get closer to a Human officer, maybe to understand their species better. He'd be charming, gentlemanly, and then one as he's telling them goodnight after one of their fake dates it hits him: HE CAUGHT FEELINGS FOR A HUMAN. Would they date him for realsies?? Would they even consider him as an option?? What would it be like to...kiss them? 😍 I'm sorry, this concept really reached into my brain and said "MY TURN."
Enemies to Lovers: Dukat - Listen...Hear me out. I know I haven't written him this way yet, but I AM GOING TO. He has the perfect, slap-able face, the cocky attitude, and the smug superiority.
Thank you, my friend!!! 💙

Love triangles
I loathe love triangles with all of my being. They are singularly one of my most hated tropes in romance and spoil the well for me almost every single time - which is a dead shame because it is unfortunately a rather common conceit.
What I realised when I was thinking about it yesterday - and this is an interesting point from a structural perspective - is that in order to develop the relationships (even if you are guaranteed to only be committing to one), you are effectively halving the development of each relationship in respect to the other in terms of narrative space.
That makes for a very difficult task and I feel like almost no one writing a love triangle (sincerely, with feelings for both sides or at least equal consideration given to each, because there IS one caveat where I'm down for a love triangle) realises that this is something you need to be really careful about and, other than my true love soulmates forever inner crybaby demon complaining about competing love interests, is probably the reason it so often ends up falling flat.
Of course it depends on what your expectations are for romance. If, 'Character A has feelings for Character B' constitutes appropriate and believable development then of course a love triangle is not asking you to suspend your disbelief. For me, I do not Fucking Buy It, and when it comes to romance I want to see genuine development of the romance and feelings involved, which means at least one of the relationships is going to be more poorly developed... so why do it?
Love triangles inject ambiguity into a story, which is why they're a common trope and easy shortcut to tension; they divide fanbases into shipping wars which is, from a rather cynical perspective, an easy way to cultivate fan engagement and name for your brand (Team Edward/Team Jacob might be one of the most culturally relevant products of Twilight, despite the fact the presence of the love triangle doesn't make any sense at all and was clearly a cheese on the author's or publisher's part to pad out the series).
If you are doing love triangles for other reasons (e.g. thematic ones: a common YA trope is that the love triangle represents the protagonist's choice between two ideas she must reconcile with, e.g. peace and war (Peeta or Gale)), it is obviously a little more justified but I think that if you want to thematically augment and imbue one of the romances to convey what you mean to convey, it means one of the romances will suffer or be obviously completely out of the competition and inappropriate. So even if it's ostensibly thematically justified, it doesn't make it interesting. Further, I think there's an issue here in that if, say, fans generally expect childhood friends-to-lovers, they're not exactly going to get the thematic message that a character like Gale should be sending, and would be upset about the culmination of his character as a way to forcibly 'end' the romance; obviously controlling fan reaction is not something you should ever try to do, but I don't think the love triangle manages to convey the themes more effectively than not. That's the crucial point.
Tumblr media
So if love triangles firstly reduce total romance development (think about the usual space afforded to a traditional romance to make it believable and moving!), and secondly are not necessarily superior vehicles for conveying thematic ideas, then I think the reason they are enduring tropes is because of that artificial ambiguity. We KNOW the character stuck in the middle will end up with one or the other or alone (or all three at different parts of the story), which means it can feel wishy-washy if they work at it back and forth, or ultimately the ambiguity is not worth very much, or the story can feel unfair because sometimes storytellers will value the 'less likely' option e.g. the more poorly developed one, just for the sake of shock value. That is partly why I hate love triangles, because they can feel like a joke on the audience.
I hesitate to say this so declaratively but I feel like love triangles are often a product of lazy storytelling. Not just lazy storytelling but paint-by-numbers romance which doesn't care about romance CONCEPTUALLY. Not just romance as a means to an end but romance as a fully lived-in visceral experience of the characters that isn't just 'who will end up with whom'. I'm not about to criticise it from an unrealistic perspective (who even ends up in that many love triangles!?!!?) but from a perspective of emotional verisimilitude, I find it hard to believe in a story where love is centred and valued that it could be reduced to something that feels oddly transactional or even gameified - Character C cultivated enough Romance Points with Character A so he wins. It just has a tacky feeling in the mouth.
I still feel critically that the sacrifice of romantic development for the sake of two potential romances is the critical flaw, and that's the most interesting takeaway; it doesn't mean they can't be done but it's something to be cognisant of (and I've never seen this criticism before but forgive me if someone's already said it, it felt novel to me lol). It's not just concrete development that has to be split but emotional narrative space (what the character is thinking and doing) and thematic narrative space (which with some examples can be mitigated but nevertheless in this case, one romance will automatically be 'stronger' than the other), which can get messy and exhausting really quickly.
I'm sure there are ways it can be done properly - I think this is true of anything in storytelling, it's almost universally fixable (the one caveat where I tolerate it, if not love it, is when it's only a misunderstood love triangle, and there really is no such one) - but very particular to love triangles, they represent boring and overdone trends in romantic storytelling that thinks competition is more important than actual development and treats them as almost requisite, and love triangles are not a small enough trope to be potentially overlooked because they are a major structural consideration in the story but are treated too casually.
I want to see the full development of a romance, not half.
