Summary: Once is sheer luck. Twice is a kindness. Wei Wuxian does not go through life tallying his encounters with handsome river gods, and he is already content with what he has. But the thing is—Lan Wangji keeps coming back. Kay's comments: Since AO3 is currently down, here is one of my favourite Twitter threads that has since been archived on AO3 as well, so I've included both links. It's a lovely Spirited Away AU in which Lan Wangji is a polluted river spirit and Wei Wuxian is a bath-house worker, who is actually a fox spirit as well, but can't transform while he works and pays his debt off. I'm very weak for this setting, because Spirited Away is one of my favourite Ghibli stories and yukla wrote a truly beautiful Wangxian AU.
alternate universe, sprited away, river spirit lan wangji, fox spirit wei wuxian, bath-house worker wei wuxian, strangers to lovers, getting to know each other, angst with a happy ending, fluff, thread fic, getting to know each other, mutual pining

a little bedtime story I wrote for @mdzs-owns-my-ass-i-guess to help them get to sleep (I wrote it ...live? LMAO idk what word to use. essentially I wrote it a few sentences at a time while they read) & so while its not explicitly stated as wangxian, you can definitely tell where its origins lie. I hope you enjoy!
*Little detail i wanna add: the "fox" is a fox spirit like my oc rahul is a wolf spirit- so he can change back and forth between human and fox as he pleases so long as he has his pelt.
*the mc here is at the bare minimum a mortal of some kind like a human.

.✦ In The Mountains ✦.
Once upon a time, deep within the sharp mountains of a lonely winter glade, there was a man who stood before a great towering peak of snow.
The man was searching, searching for something.
He'd been walking for days, so he decided to have a moment of respite and rest with a small fire.
he rubbed his hands together and held them near the flame, watching the colors dance around the edges of his palms as his mind ran circles, laughter echoing in his memories.
He ran along side a little fox, eyes like rubied crescents on his own of winter sky. He smiled, never having felt such elation that his companion brought.
But then the fox disappeared into the dangerous glade in the mountain.
It'd been 13 years since then.
He sighed deeply, bringing his hands back to himself in order to look at the calluses and flushed tones of his fingertips. He couldn't stay in the mountains forever, he had to go back home. He had family waiting…but…
He missed him.
The village didn't.
He decided he was too anxious to rest longer, and snuffed out the fire with a bucket of snow, pulling out strips of bland dried meat that he could eat on the way. He'd be scolded for this, if he was at home. But he didn't have the resources to cook up here, it was too cold.
It didn't matter though. As long as he treated them with respect. Like the little fox did.
He could remember that bright smile hiding behind his caramel fingers. Like he was the most playful mischievous fox in the world, but he thanked the earth for every meal he had.
He remembered how the villagers blamed him for animals going missing, for food stolen from their stores.
But he trusted him.
He bundled his cloak closer and breathed out clouds of ice, eyelashes lowering to shield from the cold.
soon, soon he would find him.
His head whipped upright as he heard laughter, eyes widening as he saw a wisp of black fur trail behind trees and disappear between them.
He ran after it.
He ran and ran and ran, until his legs burned from the rush.
Until he went tumbling, a mess of black and whites and reds and blues. He groaned and lifted his head, shaking the snow off his head as he listened to the quiet laughing beneath him.
He felt the ice and snow melt away in an instant.
Quietly, he brushed away the snow on that pinkened nose, familiar eyes of stormy nights gazing back into his own. And he cried.
He cried and hugged him tight, the frost banishing from his heart as those arms came to rest around him as well.
The feeling of being able to hold the one he loved once more, it felt as if he couldn't breathe- ah, perhaps not, it was simply a kiss so breathtaking he forgot how.
He never wanted to leave again.
The snow wasn't so bad, when you had the sun to melt it away.
The End✦.

Obsessed with AUs where wwx is a fox spirit but may I propose an additional idea?
wwx is just an ordinary cultivator but the Lan elders think he's a fox spirit
It's surely the only way he was able to seduce lwj. There's no way lwj would behave this way with an ordinary man.
Lan Qiren has to have monthly meetings on this where he reassures elders over and over that no, Wei Wuxian is not a fox spirit. No, he is not stealing Wangji's yang or qi. Yes, he is causing disturbances but that's because he's a disobedient, dishonorable delinquent. And please stop trying to find fox dens to destroy. It's ruining the landscape of Cloud Recesses and harming local wildlife.

1. Would have been Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian.
After the Sunshoot campaign and for some reason Wei Wuxian is in Cloud Recess and Lan Qiren discovers that they don’t have a core. But the lan clan had a technique to fix a lost core for others that had been attacked by others that could melt their core. @nikkiwhitecraft
I was the requester for #1.
I am sure that part of the story that Wei Wuxian and Lan Q had to travel, and that was when it was discovered that Wei Wuxian had no core, and Lan Q was annoyed he never said anything and the Lan Clan had a technique to restore a core that was lost/melted as the core melting clan was known.
Thats all I remeber

2. Hey! Im looking for a fic where the jins got the tiger tally, and that they wanted to 'flood the world with vermillion light'. I remember that it was post-the first siege of the burial mounds, and WY was maybe dead? After which the other sects had to fight the Jins, and there was also something about the people wishing that WY was alive. Please help me find it! Thank you so much!
FOUND! I'm pretty sure this is the deleted "When the World Comes Crumbling Down, you Will Call my Name" by pft_a_Frog22. The archive link was https://archiveofourown.org/works/35867848.

3. Hi! I’m searching for a fiction on AO3 where Wei Wuxian is a Rogue cultivator, he founds Lan Wangji floating in a river/lake and saves him. Wangji don’t remember anything due to the trauma he has suffered and his core is damaged altogether. He had a severe injury on his back but when he recovers he starts to travel with Wei Wuxian, not knowing his brother is searching for him. Because of his poor health issues he breakdown with a fever in the middle of a hunt, far from everything, during this time Lan Wangji loses consciousness, Wei Ying is visited by a strange fox spirit, really creepy whom he made a pact with to save Lan Wangji life's. In the history, Wei Ying has an uncle that reach both of them to advise something, Lan Wangji discorver to be a really powerfull fox spirit, i think they call him Huxia or something like this, Wei Ying "dies" by the venom of a fierce corpse (most like become one of them) and is ressurected by the Jade Emperor himself, the Demon subdue palace is actually a palace and Wangji's mother was the previous Huxia.
I’m going crazy cuz I remember ALL the history, but not the name of the fiction.
I appreciate the help with all my little heart. ❤️ @myukisora

4. Hi, could you please help me find a wangxian fic? I apologize for the inconvenience, especially because i don’t remember much of the plot except select few parts of it and i dont remember if it was a thread on twitter or on ao3.
The scenes i do remember are as followed: Prior to this scene, wangxian might have had an argument or were avoiding each other because i dont think they had spoken to each other in a while. The scene i remember is WWX going to JYL’s place where everyone is gathered for a get together, wwx dotes over JL, going on about how he’s the favorite uncle. When he enters the living room, he sees LWJ on the couch, and sitting next to him is JZX half brother MXY talking to him. He thinks they are sitting a little too close and he gets a bit jealous but doesn’t say anything. I’m not sure if I remember it right, but i think people or mainly nhs kept saying how MXY resembles WWX, worsening the situation. Wangxian and their whole eye contact happens and everyone in the room is tense because of their interaction or lack their of. WWX suddenly goes to the bathroom, leaning into the sink…waiting and LWJ follows him in. They end up reconciling.
Thats all I remember, I know its not much, and i have been struggling as well because of it going through my bookmarks on ao3 and twitter. I’m hoping someone remembers this part as well and can mention the fic. Thank you!
Hi, the fic you mentioned is not the one :/ i am so sorry for the inconvenience. I can try adding more context. It’s the fic about WWX entering JYL’s party at her place and finding LWJ sitting on a couch with MXY. The scene is towards the very end so MXY’s presence is more of a cameo, he wasn’t present for the fic. WX might have a fwb situation that went wrong or it might be a lwj fucks fic. Lwj follows wwx to the br, its tense as wwx stares at him through the mirror but they both make up

6. Hi, hope you are having a great day! Could you, please, help find a fic, which, I think, had a wangxian arranged marriage due to growing Wen threat, but honestly cannot remember the exact premise. But there was a scene where wrh manages to get wq married to lwj as a second wife, and wwx felt like he failed the Jiang-Lan alliance. And there was a big confrontation between wq and wwx, where she tells him the reason for the marriage was to save her family. And lwj might have been ill or cursed and wearing a mask (not sure).

7. Looking for help finding the name of this fic on ao3 I’m have trouble hunting it back down. Burial mounds settlement days canon divergence.
Essentially the premise is that the people living in Yiling often see Wei Ying taking care of and teaching A-Yuan by the river and a woman one day who was also there to wash her clothes asked him to look after her son while she was busy. This snowballed into Wei Ying basically running a little informal school out of Yiling where he teaches and just looks after any child that is brought there, including orphans and prostitute’s children which is kinda illegal. Lan Zhan knows and regularly visits. If the children show aptitude for cultivation they usually get sent to the Lan or (later in the story) the Jiang. The rest of the Wens kinda accidentally become a part of the Yiling community so much so that they all move out of the burial mounds and into the town proper. Because they’ve all left the mounds and disconnected pretty hard from the cultivation community they don’t even realize that the Jin’s sent people to attack the mounds. They found no one and declared to the world that they had slayed the rest of the wen dogs alongside Wei Wuxian. Jiang Cheng only finds out his brother is alive because he’s been informed that a small school in the Jiang territory hasn’t been paying taxes and when he goes to investigate finds Wei Ying safe and sound. @coffeehousefanfics

17. Hey mods! 💜
I’m pretty sure I found this fic on here but now I can’t seem to find it. I’m not sure if it was on a itmf or fic finder. But it’s the one where wwx takes a curse from some ghost in order for her to move on. It’s a curse where he can’t see or feel anyone that feels “strongly” about him. He assumes the juniors all either hate or fear him and I forgot what he assumed lwj. They say to break the curse he has to accept the others’ feelings. So he tried to accept the fact that jin ling hated him although jin ling did not mean what he said and was confused at how wwx reacted. I think lan jinyi was the one who figured out wwx couldn’t see them because he launched at him as if he was going to attack him and wwx didn’t flinch. In the end he starts seeing and feeling impressions of them until he can see them in full again. Please help? I’ve been through my history and bookmarks and all open tabs of ao3. No such luck.

WWX goes to visit Cloud Recesses, still unsure about LWJ. There was also a scene when one of the babies gets snatched by an eagle or some other bird and LWJ saves them? AU ask game: (I keep forgetting the name) daemon au? The one where they have spirit like animal companions, technically their soul manifest.
Hi, thanks for the ask!
Oh, hey, that's His Dark Materials—sure! Also, I don't know much about naming daemons in Chinese, so I haven't named any of them.
Neither Jiang Cheng nor Wei Wuxian's daemon had settled before the fall of Lotus Pier. They were often similar so they could play together and accompany the duo more easily, Jiang Cheng's in the form of a leopard cat and Wei Wuxian's in the form of a fox, or an Asian small-clawed otter, or a monkey that liked to ride on Jiang Cheng's daemon's back.
(Before Wei Wuxian came to Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng's daemon was most often a dog—a "superior dog," which reduced but did not eliminate his mother's criticism. Either a Chow-Chow or a Tibetan mastiff—big, tough, smart working dogs who only like their people. He liked his daemon like that, but the leopard cat was also good, since they can swim and play in the water. So it was fine, he could do it for Wei Wuxian. Sometimes, when she was startled, or if Jiang Cheng was really mad, she turned into a tiger. His mother liked this form best of all.)
After Jiang Cheng's core was crushed, his daemon disappeared; but after he got his core back, she appeared again, settled as a tiger, ready to search for Wei Wuxian. When they found him, his daemon had gone, and he said simply that they had been separated by the Wen. Jiang Cheng looked for her often, with no luck.
When Wei Wuxian returns, his daemon's settled form—a crow—matches well with Lan Wangji's elegant male crane.
Jiang Yanli's daemon was a soft-spoken butterfly. Jin Ling tells himself he will never, ever, ever have a daemon that fragile.

AU in which Wei Wuxian is a fox-spirit, Lan Wangji is a dragon and A-Yuan is a half-fox spirit, half-human. In his human form, Lan Zhan has antlers and while they are studying in Cloud Recess, Wei Ying is bold enough to constantly remark how chewable they look. Thing is, fox spirits always crave something to gnaw, and the younger they are, the bigger the need. Lan Zhan is nothing but offended at these remarks.
Skip forward. Soon after Lan Zhan takes A-Yuan into custody, the kid begins to express the same need. Of course he doesn’t say anything, but he keeps staring at Lan Zhan’s antlers. A-Yuan has a variety of chewing toys made from special materials and/or enchanted to the point that you can use any of them as spiritual weapons if you, say, decide to hit a walking corpse on a head with it. But even being just half-spirit, A-Yuan destroys all of them sooner or later, and he can’t control himself properly, so he ends up gnawing and destroying lots of other things while he’s on it. Dragon antlers, on the other hand, are known to be practically unbreakable. Even Wei Wuxian, a pure-blood fox-spirit noted to be remarkably strong for his young age, probably wouldn’t be able to break them.
So Lan Zhan makes a compromising decision.
Skip forward. When resurrected Wei Wuxian notices it for the first time, he thinks his eyes are playing tricks on him, but on the closer inspection he confirms that one antler has a small chip. Wei Wuxian thinks that Lan Zhan must have encountered a deadly enemy at some point. It should take an unprecedented amount of spiritual power to deal damage to a dragon antler.

MDZS-On Wei Wuxian and huli jing
So. In fanarts and fanfiction, Wei Wuxian is often depicted as a huli-jing, or a jiuwei-hu (nine-tailed fox). This is why the jiuwei hu is such a good animal to represent Wei Wuxian in particular.
Huli-jing, from 狐狸(huli, fox), and 精 (jing, spirit) and jiuwei-hu, from 九尾(jiuwei, nine tails) and 狐(hu, fox)
The jiuwei-hu first appears in the Shan Hai Jing, described to be "similar in shape to a fox but with nine tails, its cry sounds like a infant's wail, eats people, if you eat it, you will be untouched by evil"
It is a auspicious creature, and symbolises that the ruler of the time is just. It can shapeshift, and cultivates its power and gains tails. If it lives a thousand years, it will become a fox-immortal.
From then on, there are several records of jiuwei-hu as a benevolent creature. In the Qinhan period, the 孝经 records: "the nine-tailed fox is the most virtuous of creatures". In East Han, 班固's 白虎通义 records: "the fox is a virtuous creature and an omen of many children and grandchildren"
However, in the Tangsong period rumours about the fox as a huyao(fox-monster) or huli-jing(fox-spirit->usually malevolent). As time went on, more and more stories of jiuwei-hu as monstrous spirits appeared. The characteristic of eating people was part of the twisting of the fox's nature, and imperial concubines were sometimes accused of being shapeshifting huli spirits intent on causing destruction by "seducing and distracting" the emperor. Often, when dynasties fell, it would be blamed on a woman, usually a concubine, for leading the emperor astray, and they would be accused of being huli-jing.
The huli-jing and jiuwei-hu are mainly known as malevolent spirits, who trick and confuse people, and huli-jing can be used an insult to women.
This ties in well with Wei Wuxian's story. For starters, the cry of the jiuwei-hu-其声如婴儿-is described with the same character as Wei Wuxian's name, 婴,meaning child or baby. The shift from the huli-jing's story from benevolent creature to malevolent creature echoes Wei Wuxian's story arc. He begins as a beloved young master, strong and clever and with a good reputation, before descending to a near-mythical figure feared and envied in equal measure, surrounded with rumours and accusations. It's only at the end of MDZS that his name is cleared, and like the huli-jing in present times, is beginning to regain its former glory. The huli-jing is now the subject of many novels and they are portrayed as benevolent almost as much as malevolent.
Thus, Wei Wuxian being a huli-jing is a damn good idea. Kudos to whoever came up with it.

Foxxian + Dragonji bookstore/cafe, friends to lovers AU 🥰☕️📖
Lan Wangji's tail swishes with anticipation as he watches the door from behind the register.
Any minute now, his cozy, peaceful cafe/bookstore will be filled with all the chaos a Hulijing has to offer. His heart dance
The customers have long since been chased away by the small snowstorm outside, leaving the cafe in comfortable silence.
In the center of the room, surrounded by large chairs, a fire crackles eagerly, offering its heat and warm, flickering light to the space. Outside, snow drifts lazily to the ground. For now, it lays pristine and undisturbed, but it's nearly 7pm, which means any second now --
Bright laughter floats in from outside, as though carried in by a wayward snowflake. Lan Wangji sits up straighter. Its source bounces into view of the large windows a second later. Lan Wangji watches fondly as the hulijing kicks up the snow and attempts to catch falling flakes in his mouth.
The top of his head is covered by a bright red beanie, with space for his blackish-grey ears to stick out. What is visible of his long, raven hair is speckled with white spots of snow, as are the nine bushy tails behind him. The rest of him is covered by a large, black cloak with a gold pattern stitched onto it. Jyl must have gifted it to him for his birthday a few weeks ago, Lan Wangji guesses. It's a nice replacement for the ratty, faded red coat he used to wear.
As though sensing Lan Wangji's insult to his former favorite jacket, the Hulijing abruptly spins around to look through the window. Silver eyes lock onto him immediately and a wide smile stretches across the fox spirit's face, sharp fangs visible. He quickly bounds to the door, still kicking up as much snow as possible as he goes.
"Lan Zhan!!" He cries, pushing the door open. Lan Wangji isn't sure if Wei Wuxian's presence or the cold air fills the space faster, but they each slam into him with great force.
"Wei Ying." The corners of his lips tick up in a soft smile. Wei Wuxian's gaze softens ever so softly. He skips over and rests his elbows on the counter, leaning into Lan Wangji's space, the way he always does. It once irritated Lan Wangji beyond all reason, but now it feels like a relief. Like the warm sun has finally decided to kiss his chilled skin.
"What do you have for me today?" Wei Wuxian asks with an eager grin.
"Due to the weather, the special today was a hot chocolate with..." Lan Wangji intentionally trails off. It has the intended effect.
Wei Wuxian's eyes sparkle with interest. He leans a little closer.
"Oh? Is there something more?"
"Mn. Chili peppers."
Wei Wuxian gasps dramatically and reels back, out of Lan Wangji's space. It doesn't feel like a loss in the face of such clear delight.
"Chili peppers?! No way!?"
"Yes way," Lan Wangji answers mildly. Wei Wuxian tilts his head back in a laugh. "Lan Zhan, you are too much!" He declares, ears twitching happily. "I'll take one of those!"
Lan Wangji nods and sets off to make it, intentionally not charging him, as always. And as always, Wei Wuxian stuffs far too much money in the tip jar when he thinks Lan Wangji isn't looking. They fall into a comfortable silence as Lan Wangji makes the drink. Wei Wuxian browses the new arrivals section absentmindedly. When he finds one that intrigues him, he carefully tugs it out and flips through it.
"Hey, Lan Zhan," he calls just as Lan Wangji is squirting an unreasonable amount of whipped cream onto his drink, the way he knows Wei Wuxian likes. As an afterthought, he sprinkles an extra dusting of chili powder as well.
"How long do you think I've been a regular here now?"
Lan Wangji sets the drink on the counter and considers it. "Hm. Around eight months, I believe."
Eight lovely, wonderful, warm months of Wei Wuxian visiting him every evening at 7, no matter the weather or the kind of day he's had.
"Eight months? Wow," Wei Wuxian shakes his head in disbelief. He slides the book back onto the shelf and returns to the counter. He pulls the warm mug into his hands but doesn't drink from it yet.
"And..." He hesitates. Concerned curiosity teases Lan Wangji's mind. Wei Wuxian very rarely hesitates unless he's talking about something especially serious. "Do you think... um, do you think we're friends?"
Lan Wangji blinks. That was not the question he was expecting.
"Yes, of course," he answers immediately. The tension drains from Wei Wuxian's shoulder and he offers him a relieved smile.
"Okay, good. I think so too, but I wasn't sure..."
"You weren't sure I felt the same," Lan Wangji finishes for him, heart twisting painfully in his chest. "Wei Ying, I look forward to your visits every day. Getting to know you has brought me great joy over the past several months."
As he speaks, Wei Wuxian's eyes grow wider, a bright flush rising high on his cheeks. "I hope to keep you in my life for many years to come."
Wei Wuxian squeaks and lifts the mug to hide his face. "Lan Zhaaaaan," He whines, ears flat against his head. "You can't just say things like that! My heart can't take it! Are you trying to kill me?!"
Lan Wangji huffs and moves to wipe down the tools he used for the drink.
"Of course not. That would contradict my previous statement."
"Well, how am I supposed to know when you say things like that?" Wei Wuxian lowers the drink to pout at him. "It sounds genuine on the surface, but I really almost had a heart attack, er-gege! How do I know that wasn't your intention all along?!"
Lan Wangji peers at him from the corner of his eye, intentionally letting it glow a little.
"You don't," he says darkly. It gets the desired reaction.
Wei Wuxian's jaw drops in horror, but his eyes shine with glee, tails flicking happily behind him. "I knew it!" He gasps. "This has been your plan all along hasn't it?!"
Lan Wangji curls his tail around his own leg and looks away. "Maybe. Maybe not."
A wide, toothy grin cracks Wei Wuxian's mock scared expression. "Well, I've got my eye on you now, er-gege! You won't be able to take me out so easily!"
"We'll see."
Wei Wuxian laughs and finally brings the hot chocolate to his mouth. The second the liquid hits his tongue, his eyes roll back in an exaggerated moan. The pointed tips of Lan Wangji's ears burn. He hurries to cover them with his hair before Wei Wuxian notices.
"Mmmm this is so good, Lan Zhan!" He cries. "Definitely the best I've ever tasted. You may not be able to top this, honestly."
Lan Wangji preens at the high praise. "I will try my best," he promises.
Wei Wuxian grins at him. On his nose is a small dollop of whip cream. Lan Zhan leans back and tightly grips the counter behind him to prevent himself from leaning forward to kiss it off. They fall back into silence, occasionally broken by Wei Wuxian's quiet sounds of enjoyment and words of praise.
When he finishes the beverage, he leans back with a satisfied sigh, rubbing his belly happily.
"So good," he mumbles, eyes half-lidded. The combination does unspeakable things to Lan Wangji's self-control, so he busies himself with emptying the pastry cabinet in preparation for tomorrow.
Wei Wuxian watches him quietly, tails swishing lazily. When Lan Wangji absentmindedly slides him a leftover lotus cake he knows he likes, his expression turns thoughtful.
"Say, Lan Zhan," he starts, leaning forward to rest his head on his hand.
Lan Wangji hums, not looking up from his task.
"Do you happen to have any relationship advice books?"
Lan Wangji pauses.
"...Relationship advice books?"
"Mhm," Wei Wuxian confirms, watching him closely. "See, there's someone I want to woo, but I'm not sure how to go about it. I feel like I've tried everything, but nothing seems to work."
At this, his bottom lip juts out in a pout, ears drooping sadly. Lan Wangji hardly notices. A loud buzzing fills his ears, dulling his senses. He feels like a movie character in a scene where a bomb has gone off nearby. Stumbling around, shaken and confused, trying to figure out what happened. There's an empty spot where a large structure used to be and a new reality needs to be processed.
Wei Wuxian has someone he wants to woo -- someone he wants a relationship with. "And since I happen to have a friend with a cafe slash bookstore," Wei Wuxian is saying, oblivious to his plight. "I thought maybe he'd have something to help me out."
And he wants Lan Wangji's help to do it. A growl builds in his chest at the thought of helping put Wei Wuxian in another person’s arms. He forces it down, along with all the other unreasonable feelings of jealousy and bitter disappointment. No matter how bad Lan Wangji wants him to, Wei Wuxian does not belong to him. Nor does he owe him anything.
Lan Wangji developed these feelings by himself. They are his own problem. Wei Wuxian is under no obligation to return or take responsibility for them.
He is coming to Lan Wangji as a friend. And so a friend he will be.
"The self-help section is the case closest to the window. Relationship advice books are on the second shelf."
Wei Wuxian chirps his thanks and skips to the indicated location. As he browses his tongue pokes out between his teeth.
He looks so pretty like this, curious and determined. Lan Wangji wants to carry him up to his apartment upstairs and hide him from whoever is trying to steal him away. The pastry plate in his hands almost shatters from his tight grip. He rips his eyes away and still his tail that had begun flicking angrily across the floor.
It is time to do the dishes, he decides. In the back, where Wei Wuxian is well out of sight. Perhaps the sound of the rushing water will drown out his shameful thoughts.
---
"Lan Zhaaan," Wei Wuxian singsongs when Lan Wangji shuts the water off. "Come help!"
Lan Wangji takes a deep breath to brace himself, then steps back to the front. Doing the dishes did indeed help him calm down a bit. Which is good because he has a feeling things are about to get a lot worse.
Wei Wuxian fixes him with a teasing grin when he comes into view.
"Er-gege, isn't it poor business practice to leave your favorite customer all alone?"
"I did not leave my favorite customer alone. Just a regular one," Lan Wangji deadpans.
Wei Wuxian sputters. "You --! You are so mean!"
"No one believes me when I say you're the meanest person around, yet the proof is right here!"
Lan Wangji raises a brow. "No one believes that?"
Wei Wuxian deflates a little. "Yeah, okay, everyone believes that one -- but they shouldn't!"
A swirl of happiness curls in his gut. If Wei Wuxian ever thought him mean or cold and unapproachable, he did so with gleeful amusement. A rare person who appreciates a rose's thorns, even when they prick his finger.
"But still!" Wei Wuxian cries. "You're not closed yet. What if someone came in?! I called for you so many times, but you didn't answer! I would have had to make that hot chocolate myself!"
Lan Wangji shudders at the thought of anyone tasting something Wei Wuxian made with easy access to spice. "Exactly! Very irresponsible of you, er-gege," he scolds.
Lan Wangji doesn't roll his eyes, but it's a close call.
"There is a storm and I close in 15 minutes. It is unlikely someone would come in."
"You called for my help?" he reminds. "Ah, yes!" Wei Wuxian jerks upright and slides a book towards him.
'How to Get the Man of Your Dreams in 5 Simple Steps' the title reads.
The urge to burn it is so strong tendrils of smoke slip out of Lan Wangji's nose. Luckily, Wei Wuxian is too busy flipping to the table of contents to notice. "Okay, so I'm gonna read out this person's ideas one by one, and you tell me if you think they would work on you."
Lan Wangji pauses. "On me?"
Wei Wuxian hums an affirmative. His ears twitch like he's nervous, but Lan Wangji doesn't know why he would be. "Yeah, I mean, you've gotta be one the toughest nuts to crack in the whole world," he laughs, the sound a bit pitchier than normal. "So if it works on you, then it could work on anyone, right?"
"Perhaps," Lan Wangji agrees slowly. "But everyone is different."
And much less biased than he is, he doesn't say. Anything Wei Wuxian does works on him, even breathing.
"Not that different or chumps like this would never sell anything! So just listen, okay?"
"Mn."
"Alright, the first one is easy. Make eye contact."
Lan Wangji's brows scrunch. How does that count as a first step? He tries to look at the book, but Wei Wuxian sweeps it out of sight.
"Ah, ah, ah!" Wei Wuxian chides. "Don't look away. You gotta try it to know if it'll work, okay?"
Lan Wangji hesitates. "I thought you were just going to say them?"
"I will say them," Wei Wuxian confirms. "But how will you know it'll really work if you don't try it?"
That is... somewhat true. But still, this seems a bit odd.
"Just trust me, okay Lan Zhan?" Wei Wuxian looks at him with pleading eyes.
"...Mn," Lan Wangji agrees. When their eyes finally lock, Lan Wangji can suddenly no longer recall why he felt uncertain. Satisfaction swirls in those silver eyes, drawing him in like a siren's song. He's always known how beautiful they are, but never how dynamic. Every shade of grey seems to be hidden in their depths. Lan Wangji thinks he could spend hours cataloging each fleck. Maybe he could even publish the results.
"Good boy," Wei Wuxian murmurs. "Is this working for you?"
"..Mn," Lan Wangji croaks.
"Okay," Wei Wuxian says breathily. "Okay, that's good."
"All these steps need to be combined, so don't look away."
"I won't." He couldn't, even if he wanted to. Wei Wuxian has had him completely enthralled from the moment he first stepped through the door all those months ago.
"The second step says to hold their hand." Lan Wangji reaches out his hand with no hesitation. Half a beat later, warm fingers lace between his and squeeze. Oxygen shakes and rattles its way out of Lan Wangji's lungs. He squeezes back.
There's something in Wei Wuxian's eyes that Lan Wangji can't quite place. But it fills him with tentative hope. "This doing anything?"
Lan Wangji nods slowly, like honey dripping from a spoon. "Mn."
"Good," Wei Wuxian murmurs. "Third step is to smile."
A soft smile stretches across his lips, as easy as breathing. Lan Wangji has seen a lot of Wei Wuxian's smiles. Each one has a special place in his mind and in his heart, but this one may be his favorite.
"This one also works," he concludes without prompting.
Wei Wuxian chuckles and squeezes his hand again.
"I'm glad. Three out of five so far isn't bad. Maybe this book isn't total garbage."
"It does not seem to be," Lan Wangji agrees. "Fourth step?"
Wei Wuxian inhales shakily and nods. "Fourth step is to tell them what you like about them."
An emotion fleets across his face, but it hardens into determination before Lan Wangji can read it.
"Lan Zhan, you are one of the kindest men I have ever met. It is one of the world's greatest atrocities that some people are too dense and self-absorbed to see how smart, wonderful, funny, and thoughtful you are. I hate to think of what my life would look like without you in it,” he pauses to take a deep breath, then continues.
“If that's too broad, then I also like the way your eyes sparkle when you talk about the latest piece you learned on the guqin or a cute rabbit picture you saw earlier. I love how you challenge me, but never in a way that makes me less. And, in the beginning, it fascinated me how someone who seemed so cold could design a space as warm and inviting as your cafe is. I didn't believe you did it yourself for weeks, Lan Zhan!" His laughter fades into a fond smile. "But that was just because I didn't know you yet. Now I can see how it perfectly reflects you."
"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji gasps. It's a miracle Wei Wuxian's bones haven't been crushed from how tightly Lan Wangji is gripping his hand. He should lighten his hold, but his muscles refuse to comply. "Wei Ying I --"
"Step 5," Wei Wuxian stops him. The words sound as though they're stumbling out of him, like if he stops now, they may never be heard. "Is to confess your feelings and hope to the heavens that they're returned because you have no idea what you'll do if they're not."
Wei Wuxian takes a deep breath and allows his eyes to slip closed. Silence blankets the room. Lan Wangji watches him closely, his breath frozen in his lungs.
It seems Lan Wangji was wrong. The spell he's been under was not caused by those gorgeous silver orbs, but by Wei Wuxian's mere existence. Wei Wuxian visibly steels himself and when his eyes open, they pierce straight into Lan Wangji's soul.
"I love you, Lan Zhan. You're the best person I have ever known and I've been in love with you for a long time now. And, if you'll allow it, I'm sure I will be for the rest of my life."
It takes half a second for Lan Wangji to lunge over the counter and pull him into a searing kiss.
Another half second for Wei Wuxian to overcome his surprise and enthusiastically throw himself into it. Five minutes for Lan Wangji to flip the store sign to close and tug Wei Wuxian towards the stairs, their lips never parting.
10 minutes to realize he never responded and fervently whisper "I love you, I love you, I love you. Best person I've ever known. I'll love you for the rest of my life."
2 hours for them to slow down enough to actually talk things through. What they mean to each other, what they want to be, and for how long they've wanted to be it.
1 month for Lan Wangji to buy a ring and ask Wei Wuxian to marry him.
And less than a second after that for Wei Wuxian to say yes.
♥️The end♥️
I loved writing this and I hope you all enjoyed it! I wrote it for @fae-hulijing‘s birthday a couple weeks ago and loved the thought of moving it on here! It may be one of my favorite fics I’ve written!

.✦ Blackened Wings. (Pt 1) - Happy Halloween!! 🦇
Tumblr media
WC - 1080 ( .MDZS Bat flock AU✦. )
Summary: The siege of burial mounds was set, but upon arrival none were found- all belongings left behind besides the clothes on their backs and Wei Wuxian's scripts. When there is nothing else left behind and no traces to find, what more is there to do than move on?
Timeline: Post first siege on the timeline. Wens/WWX did not die in the seige, and are completely off the map.
Prompt 26, for my Writing/Drawing Challenge- Animal.
.✦
Lan Wangji had been spending a great amount of time with the bats that had chosen to roost under his roof- he knew it wasn’t good practice to be in close contact with them, but he felt especially attached to them since they showed up not too long after Wei Wuxian’s and the Wens disappearance.
He was, of course, distraught. Absolutely devastated and worried- but he was very much wounded, so what could he do in such a state? When he went there to see, there really had been nothing left of them. All of their belongings were still there besides the clothes that were likely still on their backs, and Wei Wuxian’s inventions.
The assumption was, despite months of searching, that they had all died, ran away, or the most nausea inducing, been secretly done away with or decided to die together on their own terms. There was just no evidence, nothing- it was like they were spirited away.
Like they never existed.
Lan Wangji had drank that night. So much so that he thought he might disappear too- his brother had brought him home safely though, somehow.
He’d spent the next few nights trying to sneak out, being brought home and at one point even restrained- his family didn’t want him to go on a search for someone they considered evil, but especially when injured and having no leads- he didn’t care. However all he was allowed was time sitting on his deck, the night sky all he had to keep himself from going completely out of touch.
He could remember stories that Wei Wuxian told him as he looked at the stars- how he hoped his parents were two of those very ancient lights watching over him- on a long past anniversary of his mother’s passing.
And then…they came from that sky.
A somewhat large, black and red bat with a group of small white bats- he hadn’t ever seen the small white kind before, but the larger one looked kind of like a flying fox. It was large, but it wasn’t as big as some he’d seen- which made him think it was a different breed than those he’d seen in the past. Its wingspan was impressive, but its body was smaller than a cat’s. The small ones could fit in his palm if they allowed him to hold them, with sunburst orange details and dark gray wings, accented by that same golden color mixed with a light, delicate red on the outer fold of their wings. The smallest of them had an especially brilliant hue and a lovely fluffy white coat, and was the friendliest of the bunch. A baby, he presumed.
He’d focused on them, watching them hang from the beams and all huddle up inside the larger’s wings in what he assumed to be to stay warm. It was still chilly at night, and the white bats were quite small- and as they were white primarily they likely didn’t get a lot of heat retention. The larger bat though was the one who shivered. The smaller ones would huddle close, and eventually the larger one would fall asleep for a short time.
So he watched them, and stopped trying to run away. For some reason the bats stuck around, and one of the smaller ones especially loved to fly over to him and hang off his robes, sit on his shoulder or on his head. The larger one would quickly follow as if worried, but would stay as well when treated to pets and figs. It turned out even the smaller ones ate fruit as well, which he found unusual. He’d never met such small bats that didn’t eat insects and rather ate fruit.
It became his reason to keep going day to day, the only reason he didn’t rush off with his injured body looking for the one he loved. He had to stay here as long as he was injured, but he felt the time was easier now, spending time with his bats.
“A-Ying,” Lan Wangji whispered to the large bat, watching as its head turned to him expectantly. These bats were so smart, and the little things this one did reminded him of all the cute characteristics Wei Wuxian had. Rubbing its nose with its wing, tilting its head when told something curious. He still remembered the angry flapping accompanying a quite squeaky, chittery shriek the bat had made when his uncle had gotten too close to the little white bat. Those two seemed bonded, despite the little one appearing to have some sort of family amongst the other white bats left.
“Is it alright if I name your little one too?” Lan Wangji asked softly, watching as it leaned forward to give him a little lick on the nose with its soft little tongue. He exhaled quietly like an attempt of a laugh despite the exhaustion, listening to the soft mewling and chirps that sounded like real laughter to him.
“What about ‘Sizhui’?”
The bat moved its head back as if it truly understood the words, mouth slightly ajar with its head tilting ever so slightly and eyes wide- as if he was looking into his heart with those dark eyes.
“It is from a poem…do you want to hear?”
The bat chittered quietly in response.
“Yearning for but cannot chase after you, longing for someday when you will return.” He looked outside briefly, where the bats usually were roosting. The bats however were roosting in the corner of his room where it was warm, except for the littlest one currently hooked into his lapels. “It loosely means ‘chasing memories’, or another: ‘to yearn for’.” He gently scratched under the large bat’s jaw, watching its ears vibrate with happiness to the affection, but still stare at him so closely. It was unusual to see the bat this focused.
“Do you like it?”
The bat gently booped their noses together and wiggled its ears again, the soft little clicks bringing the corner of his mouth up, however tired it was. “Little Sizhui then.”
He paused, remembering the boy that followed at Wei Wuxian’s heels. He called the boy little radish, didn’t he? He missed them so much…
He hadn’t realized he had started to drift to sleep until he felt something soft gently wiping away the tears he hadn’t known he shed. His eyes cracked open just slightly, and he could have sworn he saw pale anthracite blue looking back at him.

Hope you guys enjoy Halloween! Random Information about this au:
WWX turned himself and the Wens into bats together to “disappear”. The bats start roosting under the edge of the Jingshi roof in the corner and LWJ watches them during his recovery days. He thinks it's in his head that two of them remind him of wwx & wy but doesn't care - he protects them now, and even a bit of the vice versa.
WWX is a fruit bat (I felt like a flying fox would be too big), and the wens are Honduran white bats. They are seen as a flock, despite WWX presenting as a different breed. They CAN change at will, except for Wen Yuan which WWX keeps tight control of because he’s a kid and accidents can happen. They don’t though, so the Lans assume they are all just regular bats that have taken a liking to the Jingshi roofing.
(Extra: convo excerpts when developing, it won't be completely cohesive):
Sasu: Someone is mean to LWJ (forcing him to accept liquor, etc etc) bat wwx pops out and starts squeaking at them from inside his lapels. It scares em off (works almost everytime).
A-Yuan is still little so he stays on LWJs shoulder half the time (tucked under wwx wing the rest of the time).
Yuyu: “Pristine cultivator Hanguang-Jun” chilling in front of his uncle who’s seething. Cause there’s two bats on his nephew; One is chewing his ribbon.
Yuyu: Would be funny if only wwx was the big bat and all the wens and a-yuan were just-
A tiny mob of fluffs under his wing
Sasu: jfhshfjfj beautiful, I like the idea. Maybe not a flying fox size cuz that's huuuuuuge but fruit bat. still big enough!
Yuyu: Everyone in Gusu just sighs as they now not only got “totally not pets” bunnies but bats too. Wangji privilege smh
I like to imagine Qiren is like….slightly afraid of the larger bat
Sasu: all the Lans start to like the small bat flock tho cuz the big one brings bugs and fruits to the small ones
they also don't poop there which is a plus xD
I'm sure they wouldn't like guano on Gusu paths
Yuyu: Omg.
Maybe one of the smaller bats got stuck in Qiren’s closets or something
And well….
Qiren might explode
Sasu: jfhsgdjfb LMAO LWJ is just like “why did you close them in there” and just babies the bat and feeds it a berry or smth
Yuyu: The lost bat was a-yuan ಥ_ಥ Hence wwx was just panicking flying everywhere
Sasu: I think wwx woulda led them to the closet and just sqUEAK
Qiren: "no u cant get in there!" but then heard the other squeaks gjhsgxjf
LWJ just following them around like what's wrong and that's how he ends up on the scene jfjshdhf much bat cuddles after that
Yuyu: wlskjheiocewin one day LWJ just full on cuddles bat wwx like a plushy and wwx bat is just (a bunch of flustered emojis) And all the other bats are just looking at him from the other side of the room like e u e
Sasu: HAHAHAHA they know they for sure know- god I'm dying a little imagining LWJ petting wwx slowly while he's going to sleep like he's a cat (and falls asleep with his hand on him)
Yuyu: God imagine if that’s how he poofs back into a human- /jk
Sasu: ignshdjfn fruits basket style. imagine he wakes up and sees the bat replaced with wwx nods
Yuyu: Wwx has not dared to move all night
Sasu: wwx panic shifts back into a bat and LWJ wonders if he was seeing things
Yuyu: Just eyes his water next to his bed all suspiciously……"did i accidentally drink"
Sasu: hfhsbdjd - he starts calling the bat a-ying (cuz wei ying would be too on point) and the bat seems a little flighty so he's like ‘did i catch smth’ nfhshdjjf he's sus but also doubtful haha ‘maybe i offended him’
aw but imagine he like recognizes mannerisms in bat wwx that human wwx would do, like rubbing his wing over his nose a lot, having human like expression and these squeaks that seem like laughter (and he of course gets scary or protective depending on who he's with) so he act like air puppy sometimes or shows his teeth at other times and he likes to wrap his wings over LWJs shoulders to have a full body rest
Yuyu: A living blanket
Sasu: mn, living blanket with claws
Yuyu: Lwj has learned not to voice this opinion out loud or the bat gets upset (A puppy! Of all things)
Sasu: kfhsgzcjfj hahaha- that’s just the term for fruit bats they’re nicknamed air puppies. I don't think LWJ would call him that, maybe some juniors tho haha
Yuyu: Jingyi
Sasu: pft haha Jingyi bonds with bat a-yuan nods the bat LWJ personally named Sizhui because he is small and reminds him of the little boy wwx once cared for owo
so a-yuan is a shoulder bat for Jingyi a lot when he's in his kid years
Jingyi says he's his best friend and has to be convinced to leave the bat at home when training dnhdgshsj
Yuyu: Mo Xuanyu lives in this? I can imagine him being absolutely infatuated with the bats, also hilarious if he looks at wwx bat for like 1 min and is just ... leans in whispering, Yiling Patriarch!?
Sasu: wwx, internally: that's my name don't wear it out
wwx, outside: angry bat flutters
how would he recognize tho
vkjdhdj hahaha
Yuyu: Haah love bats, wonderful stuff
Sasu: Bats are the best (❁´◡`❁) ❤
