Rocket is captured by a Ravager crew hoping to get rich off the excessively large bounty on his head. Throwing a wrench in everyone’s plans is the Terran girl they hired to do some freelance assessing on a recent haul of goods they’ve seized from a Xandaran luxury liner. Oops.

slight AU starting pre-GOTG volume 1 (but will hit most of the same major plot points). slow burn + eventual smut with a lot of pining in the middle. kinda enemies-to-lovers? (but only one of these idiots thinks they're enemies).

let me be real with you: this fic is really about wish-fulfillment. not just the eventual smut (but that too). mostly i just want someone to be nice to my best boy raccoon back to main masterlist.

If the characters from Ikemen Genjiden were animals, which ones would they be?

Okay, this is not solely based on how they look but also how they interact with other characters and their reactions, etc. I'm also not comparing their behavior like this:

'Luke(Ikepri) loves honey, Bears love honey, so therefore Luke is the bear.'

Also I some of these ideas came from looking up some fanarts.

Yoshitsune - Mouse. What? Did you actually think I would call him a tiger or a lion? No. I'm calling him a mouse because he's a very innocent bean. He's mostly expressionless and sometimes oblivious. He loves warm cuddles and most of the time he sleeps with food in his mouth. Also, look at this cute small scene from a manga drawn by a fan:

Benkei - Big Mama Bear. Cause why not? He's so big and warm, and always gives bear hugs. Mama bear? Because he loves taking care of everyone. He may look intimidating on the outside, but he's super overprotective, though he doesn't admit it. So bear suits him the best.

Yoichi - Wolf. Not like a lone wolf, but more like a cunning and evil wolf in sheep's clothing. Don't fall for his baby face, he himself has stated that he's a bad guy and does all the dirty business for the Rebels. He's intelligent and knows when and where to be kind. Above all that he's also very caring and playful with his own friends. (And also I saw a fanart of him and Yoshino as the big bad wolf and red riding hood.)

Kurama - Cat. A very sullen cat. Cat because his angry face and offensive personality kinda remind me of Kyo for Fruits basket. Also when I think Kurama is a cat, I think of a black cat being wrapped around in fairy lights, because he likes shiny things.

Shigehira - Rabbit/Bunny. More than Yoshino, I think Shigehira is the perfect fit for a rabbit. He's kind, beautiful, and also a baby. He always gets teased by certain immature grown-ups (Yoritomo, Morinaga, Kagetoki, Tamamo.) almost every day for almost everything. And I won't lie, he does gives the best reactions ever!

Morinaga - Tiger. For Masamune 2.0, this is a perfect fit. He's brave, passionate, optimistic, and loves challenges. So I don't think there is any reason not to.

Kagetoki - Snake. He's the brains of the Shogunate. He's intelligent, wise, charming, and also quiet. For me, he's kinda like a Mitsuhide 2.0. Kagetoki has a sophisticated personality and likes to mislead others by making him look like he's the bad guy when in reality he's not. He may look and sound ruthless and strict but in reality, he's a person who needs someone to remind him when to eat, drink or even sleep.

Tamamo - Doggo. He's fluffy, playful, messes things to get attention, and is super friendly. He loves when someone pets his tail and that someone is always Yoshino and Shigehira.

Yoritomo - Chameleon. Because he's a two-faced bastard. His personality changes in seconds. One second he bullies Yoshino and the next second he's the perfect Shogun. One second he gets turned on by Yoshino's sexy face and the very next second he's smiles like this-(⌒‿⌒). So I think this is perfect for him.

Yoshino(MC) - Fox. Because she's very cunning than she looks. She's intelligent and doesn't need anyone's help to solve her problems. She grasps the situation quickly and adapts to any kind of circumstances. She also has the talent to capture everyone's hearts quickly even when she's not trying. And also, she's super stubborn!!!

For Akihito, Yasuchika, Ibuki and Sueharu....IDK. I still don't know anything about them.

Ok so the one thing I have yet to see for this fandom, weirdly enough is a hybrid au. (Unless I missed it, thats also up there) Though I did see some fanart art on Pinterest at one point of the characters as animals, so I mean I guess? (If I find it again Ill write in the artist) Anyways Lets start with an obvious Character

Carmen!

- So Im stuck between two for Carmen actually, A sheep makes most sense, I mean black sheep? Or a sheep with red wool maybe? Though also maybe a fox? A cunning sly fox? To obvious? Anyways Sheep Carmen.

I would assume she would have big fluffy hair, and its thick hair. The type that makes you want to cut it all off. (Perhaps that short hair in the flashbacks?) She would have floppy sheep ears on like the side of her head, and a little cute sheep tail. Also if where going past just ears and tails. Should would have hooves. Like ones like a Faun maybe? I would expect it would take some time to learn to be quiet with hooves, but I would think she would manage.

Ivy and Zach

- I think Zach and Ivy would both be a breed of dog. (They drove cars instead of chasing them) I cant really explain it, (and im not so sure this is concrete for them) But I believe they would be mostly Golden Retriever. (And another mix of dog in there) I think it stems from loyalty and friendship. Which I think is sweet. They would look like every basic werewolf oc ever. Except with some changes. First of they have red fur (gingers😒/j)

I think Zach would have pointy ears near the top of his head and the more shaggy type hair then soft. He would have a bug bushy tail that would be speckles with lighter spots (Freckles). Also, paw feet. No I don't have an explanation for this. (Toebeans maybe?) They would again be that ginger red with speckled spots. Also sense he is a dog he would have sharper nails to imitate a dog.

Ivy on the other hand would have more droopy ears near the side top of her head. I feel like the tips of her ears would fold over slightly. She defiantly got the more fluffy hair of the two. I would think it would be very soft to touch. She would have a more sleek tail, not as bushy as Zachs (Zack? Im spelling it like my brothers name) I think she would have speckles to, but very light and not many. Her tail would probably lead in to a lighter tip then the rest of it. She would also have paws! From the Knee down (Same as Zach. Also I would like to believe they bend like a cats. So there a tad shorter then usual in this au) She also would have longer nails.

Shadowsan

- Panther! I couldnt really find an animal (Besides a Panther) that felt like Shadowsan. Hiding in the shadows, not seen by its prey, the perfect fit for the disappearing act. Also tell me Shadowsan doesnt fit the "I hate you, But secretly like you" trope of a cat. Or well more tolerates. But my point stands. (Many have tried to distract him with string. He has yet to crack)

He would still be tall, obviously. He would have pointy black cat ears. His hair would be sleek and almost shiny. And a sleek spotted tail (Normal Panther, not a black panther) I feel like he would have more claw like hands, perhaps his hands are almost paw like with long claw like nails. He may even have fur up his arms? He also gets the paw treatment. With the toebeans and everything. No one can escape. Also he may have extra spot like birthmarks on his face to imitate spots, but Im not concrete on that. He may also Purr, but has yet to admit it. (Carmen can keep her mouth closed) Finally, Shadowsan goes for the more nightly Capers, not only because of the shadows, but also because of Panthers nocturnal nature. Though his sleep schedule is a little messed up due to the diurnal society norms.

Player

- Player honestly, Raccoon. (This spawned from a fic where he was compared to one, Ill link it of I find it again) I just feel like he would be a little bastard trash rat. Also tiny claw hands, perfect for typing and fidget toys. And a tiny animal, perfect for a tiny person (Isnt he like canonically under 5'0? Or am I wrong?)

He would have the trademark raccoon mask around his eyes, of course. (Is it eye bags, or a marking. We may never know) He would have the pointy raccoon ears on top his hair, and would have softer straight hair. The striped raccoon tail, bushy and soft with normal gray and black strips. He would have grey paws leading down into a darker Grey around the foot of the paw. He would have more rounded nails and paw like hands. More nimble and long. He also Purrs to (Finding out raccoons can purr is like the purest thing ever) And of course a hell of a sleep schedule. Cause again nocturnal. It was already pretty bad before he met Carman, but oh boy did it go down hill after that.

So Im only doing Team red for now, I might do other characters after this? (I have the idea to make Jules an owl and Maybe a poodle for Devinux? Ill think on that one) and If I wrote a fic out of any of this it would probably just be a oneshot book mostly focused on team red. Anyways my hands hurt from typing this. But I would love to hear other ideas for this random AU I came up with!

So I had to change a lot of things, but I loved the idea way too much to do something easier and more classic instead. x) First of all, the male and female roles are reversed here, with N/Zoroark as the kitsune/shape-shifter fox, and Hilda as the one who saved him, also, it's the fox's spouse who surprises him here, and not their child (there are a lot of tales likes this in Japan, in which someone discovers their partner is not really human, like "Tsuru no Ongaeshi", I'm pretty sure this kind of variation from "Kuzunoha" exists somewhere).

And of course, my fanart is also based on the theory that N is a Zoroark ^^ Here is also a shiny variation of it :D Since if you reverse the colors of a shiny Zoroark, his color palette appears to be similar to N's... If N really is a Zoroark in the games, maybe he's a shiny one ?

It is the story of a man who saves a fox from a hunter, then meets a beautiful woman he marries. I'd love to hear about your favorite pokemon!

OKAY so my long time favorite is Ninetales. I loved Ninetales ever since I was a little kid because I just loved graceful animals and ever since I played Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team, I was in love with that graceful, mystical fox. I honestly don’t know if I still love Ninetales as much as I used to, but I still have this deep fondness of Ninetales because of how much I loved her when I was young. She’s a pretty basic-looking fox monster, isn’t she? Over the years, Gamefreak came up with so many more fox Pokemon with much more creative designs and gimmicks, but Ninetales will always be the best fox Pokemon to me. I also looove her Alolan form. I might actually like Alolan Ninetales better than Kantonian Ninetales, but I’m still not sure (at least I still don’t have a plush of Alolan Ninetales.... hmmm.).

My other long time favorite is Suicune. Another really graceful, beautiful animal. Their aesthetic is what I kind of strive to be perceived as: elegant with both a vague sense of femme and a vague sense of masc. Strong, yet dainty. I always kind of admired how the species they’re based off of is so much more vague than Raikou and Entei’s. I used to argue with people that said that they were supposed to be a wolf in YouTube comments. Because logically, they would be a leopard, since Raikou is a tiger and Entei is a lion, right? But they really don’t look like a leopard, do they? Even though logically I always knew they’re supposed to be a leopard, they always looked more like a fusion of a wolf and a horse. My two favorite animals at the time I started liking Pokemon, which is probably another reason why I took such a liking to them. They sound like what I imagine a polar bear sounds like, and that’s beautiful.

I’ve always had such a fondness for Absol that I’m surprised I never regarded him as a favorite of mine sooner, but. Absol was the first Pokemon I really sympathized with. The whole being blamed for natural disasters thing. I would wake up to reruns of the Hoenn seasons of the Pokemon anime playing on my TV and got really excited when one day it happened to be an episode starring that cool Pokemon that saved me and BulbasaurS from Articuno in PMD: Blue Rescue Team. I always knew she was a good Pokemon and I wish it was as obvious to the townspeople in that episode as it was to me. They were also the closest thing Pokemon had to a wolf at the time to me, my reasoning being that Absol is misunderstood the same way wolves are (my big thing at the time was being mad that wolves were always the bad guys in most media)! So you could imagine my confusion when I went to look up fanart and saw Absol lumped in with the cat Pokemon because of his face. I still think her anatomy is more doglike than catlike.

I went nuts over Buizel. I coveted that Buizel Pokedoll plush on PokemonCenter.com every single day probably for months until the day I actually got it from Nintendo World. I imagined myself as a Pokemon trainer with Buizel as my partner, somehow being able to take down a Ho-Oh on its own (I don’t think I really understood that Ho-Oh was a powerful legendary Pokemon at the time tbh). The weird thing is, I don’t even like water-type Pokemon, or anything to do with water powers in general. The other weird thing is that I don’t really remember actually using Buizel on my team when I played Pokemon Diamond. I assume it’s because Diamond was my first main series Pokemon game and I guess I didn’t really understand switching Pokemon from you PC and leveling them up until I got way, way later in the game. Buizel is one of those Pokemon that I kinda forget exists, but whenever I remember him my heart goes doki doki.

Between Buizel and Quilava, I’m pretty sure I loved weasels before I even knew that much about them irl. When I heard about HeartGold and SoulSIlver coming out, I knew I was choosing Cyndaquil not because of Cyndaquil (although he is really cute), not for Typhlosion, but for Quilava. I was just gaga over Quilava. He has such a simple design but man he is so adorable. The middle of the evolution lines for the starter Pokemon have always been very underrated and I always thought Quilava outshined both his pre-evolution and his evolution. Typloshion always just kinda came off to me as a generic tough guy, while Cyndaquil at least is cute in a more unique way than your typical cute Pokemon. But Quilava oozes with personality. I’m like 75-80% sure if I had a Pokemon partner it’d be him.

Turtwig. My first starter Pokemon ever. I remember seeing the starters for Sinnoh as Sinnoh was slowly being revealed on Pokemon.com - as I’d gotten into Pokemon right at the tail end of Gen 3 when RSE were already kinda obsolete and PMD first came out - and I immediately gravitated toward Turtwig. Even if I slowly learned to love the other two, Turtwing just felt the most “me”, yanno? Actually, if I were to pick which starter Pokemon was the most “me”, it’d still probably be Turtwig (if not, it’d be Cyndaquil). Something about the shape of his head and his stumpy little body and the way he sounds just appeals to me specifically, yanno? He’s cute in a way that doesn’t appeal to everyone and I always liked that about him. Piplup and Chimchar were way more popular than he was, probably because Piplup was more conventionally cute and Chimchar was cool - I had to stand up for my turty-boi because other kids made fun of him. He’s a lot more popular nowadays than he was back in 2006 when if you were a girl would wanted to be a popstar and if you were a boy you wanted to be gangsta. Or something. Idk I was never really in touch with my peers.

And of course my newest favorite is Lycanroc, specifically dusk form! I would love to be able to go back in time and tell my kid self that not only are there gonna be actual wolf Pokemon, but wolf Pokemon with blue shiny forms (she loved blue)! Shamelessly how I came up with my namesake, dusk form Lycanroc is the Pokemon I imagine I’d be if I were a Pokemon. I just generally like how all of Lycanroc’s forms are designed (even if dusk form is a recolor of midday form shhh I excuse that because I just like dusk form’s coloration much better); something about a wolf being translated into Pokemon’s art style is so cool. Another thing it did for me is give me a favorite rock-type Pokemon, because I really never liked any rock-types beforehand (probably because I’m a furry). Midnight form Lycanroc also has the same body type as Lacmac from the Rayman cartoon aaaaaand yes I bitched for someone to trade me a shiny male Rockruff for the shiny female Rockruff I wound up with when I shiny hunted Rockruff until my partner let me have it so I could name him Lacmac. Would’ve been much less a pain in the ass if non-shiny midnight Lycanroc was blue because he looks cooler in blue than in red anyway, but whatever.

Thank you for giving me an excuse to ramble about why I love the Pokemon I love! I mean, I stayed up later than I intended to typing this but I enjoyed every second of it! Even if I’m probably gonna wake up tomorrow and realize I forgot to talk about like ten other Pokemon.

Love your TPN fanart! If you don't mind me asking-- what sort of pokemon do you think would fit the characters?

Ahhh thank you so much!! That really means a lot to me hhhh (sorry for being a few days late btw, uni is kicking my butt aaaaaa)

Anyways, glad to see that you guys are catching on to the fact that I give literally everything I get into a Pokemon AU of some sort XD Cuz I was thinking of giving one for TPN too, so thank you for giving me an excuse to finally doodle these guys out! (I would have done them digitally but I did these in my sketchbook between classes so bear with me on the quality)

For Emma, I say fire types would suit her well! Her passion and abundance of energy scream fire type for me! As for her closest one, a Torchic! I feel like they are similar in a lot of ways, such as being able to give warm hugs :>

(And Scorbunny too, but we’ll just have to see for more information on it to see just how well they would fit! Though to start off, their design similarites are uncanny!)

Other mons I’m thinking of giving her include: Arcanine, Bewear, Girafarig! And one more at the end of this post

For Norman, an Eevee! The fact that Norman is able to adapt so well to any sort of situation and use it to his advantage reminds me of the versatility of an Eevee! Plus the obvious normal/Norman pun there. And a shiny Eevee cuz why not, their color palettes are similar!

Other mons I’m thinking for his team include: Ditto, Noctowl (haha…), Metagross, Torterra, and one more

For Ray, a Zorua! Ray spends most of his life keeping up the illusion of ignorance of the true situation, so I feel like the illusion fox would be a good match to him. Plus, both are kind of quiet and keep to themselves in the beginning. During the escape, when Ray realizes that his family wouldn’t be a hindrance and vows to never leave anyone behind again, that is when his Zorua evolves. It states in the Dex for Zoroark that its bonds to its loved ones are very strong, so I feel like it would suit Ray even further like that!

I was thinking for the rest of his team to be consisted of: Absol, Luxray, Alakazam, Golisopod and one more

When coming up with AUs or just Pokemon teams for other fandoms in general, I go big or go home XD I really put in a lot of thought towards each character so that each Pokemon suits them as best as they possibly can! Each Pokemon I chose has a reason that I placed them there, and I would be more than happy to elaborate if anyone would like me to! ^^

And as for their last mons, please consider:

Each of them can fit almost perfectly with each form of Lycanroc

Philes’ Xmas Advent Calendar Prompt Day 25: Christmas Day

🎄 Merry Christmas!!!🎄

The very last advent prompt story is finally here. It is the first and only multichapter I’ve drafted for a series on AO3. Thank you to all who traveled through this journey of various degrees of angst (there were only 5 stories?) to the early msr fluff. Special thanks to @only-txf-fanart for the Advent Calendar Prompts. My writing muse came back in time to participate.

Christmas Offering

Chapter 1. Movie Missed

Scully feels warm and cozy as she sinks deeper into the couch. She hears Mulder calling her from a distance, strands of hair being swept away from her face with a gossamer touch. She hums in defiance, wraps the afghan blanket more securely around her.

“That won’t do.” She hears Mulder chuckle. She furrows her eyebrows and manages to crack open her eyes making out a blurry image of Mulder kneeling on the ground, his chin resting on the crook of his right elbow upon the couch, facing her at eye-level. He smiles softly.

“Hey there, Scully. The movie just ended.”

“What?” She asks confused, disoriented as she sits up, her hair plastered on the left side of her face. Pouting a little, still groggy from sleep, she remembers what happened. “I missed the movie?” Mulder nods and gets up off the ground to run his fingers along her left cheek and loosen the strands of hair stuck to her face. She thinks she felt a featherlight kiss on her left temple.

“Come on. Go freshen up. I’ll have coffee ready for you before you head out.”

“Mmkay,” she mumbles and untangles herself from the blanket. A few minutes later, she re-emerges from the bathroom looking somewhat awake and decent, her hair looking more windswept than bedhead. She can smell the pot of coffee brewing in the kitchen as she sits down on the couch to put on her boots. Mulder reappears in the living room, and hands Scully the travel mug he just gifted her a couple hours ago filled with coffee. She offers her thanks as he walks her to the door. She turns around.

“Mulder, are you sure you don’t want to come to my mom’s? You’re always welcomed.” He shakes his head.

“Nah, I’m good, Scully. I won’t be the best company considering how tired I feel.”

“Well, what are you going to do the rest of the day?”

“Once you leave, I intend to fully pass out since I hadn’t slept yet. I’ll be okay, Scully.” She frowns a little, looking up at him from behind her shoulder as she opens the door. Mulder leans against the door frame as she exits. “I kept you long enough away from your family. I need to be nice and share.” Scully gives him a small smile.

“Merry Christmas, Mulder.”

“Merry Christmas, Scully.”

Chapter 2. Scully Christmas Gathering

Scully arrives at her mom’s home on time with 15 minutes to spare despite the fresh snowfall. She gulps down the last of the coffee in her travel mug before stepping out into the cold, and retrieves the large shopping bags containing the presents in the trunk and backseat of her car. Just when she reaches the front door, it suddenly opens revealing a man standing nearly six feet with ruddy brown hair and dark green eyes clad in a burgundy plaid shirt and jeans.

“Charlie?!” Scully exclaimed surprised and excited to see her little brother. She drops the bags and gives him a huge hug. He laughs.

“Hey, Sis.”

“That’s it?! A ‘hey, sis’ after years of not hearing from you, and you decide to show up on Christmas Day?!” She playfully punches him in the arm.

“Hey, now! You get photos of my whereabouts. They’re a small fortune, you know.” Scully rolls her eyes at him, though she’s not the least bit irritated by his remark. Her free-spirited brother found his true calling as a freelance photographer right after college, landing assignments every so often from travel guide magazine publishers.

“Those don’t count. You’re not even in them.”

“Yeah, but I took them.”

“I still can’t believe you’re here.”

“I know. Mom’s pissed at me right now for not telling her I’m in town. She’s upset that I won’t have any presents to unwrap. Come on, let me help you out.” Charlie reaches for the bags and brings them inside as Scully follows him to the tree. The house smells like holiday spices from the mulled spiced cider their mom prepared in the kitchen the night before. The living room looked picturesque with a roaring fireplace, complete with hung stockings and a fully decorated tree with all the ornaments handmade and collected over the years. She notices Melissa’s stocking with her favorite horse sleigh ornament hanging on the mantle. Scully smiles a small bittersweet smile as she heads over to the tree to place the gifts underneath. She sees a light flash from the corner of her eye.

“Charlie, really?” She turns to him only to be greeted with another flash of light.

“I’m creating memories, Dana. Just go about doing what you’re doing and pretend I’m not here.” She scoffs.

“Don’t worry, Dana. I’ll be turning off the flash once daylight breaks.” Scully hears footsteps coming down the stairs and sees their mom in cozy, festive flannel pajamas and a fluffy robe. Their mom smiles at the two of them beside the tree.

“I see you two are catching up. I’ll make some coffee. I already woke up Bill and Tara. They’re getting Matthew ready. The King’s Mass is held at 9 this morning. That should give us more than enough time to unwrap presents and get ready.” Their mom looked at them amused by their dubious expressions. Both Scully siblings seemed to have forgotten about the Christmas Day mass they hated attending as children. Bill hosted Christmas last year, and Scully’s previous holiday seasons had been overshadowed with life-altering events. Their mom shakes her head smiling as she heads to the kitchen.

“Shit! Crap! Sorry for cussing on Baby Jesus’ birthday. I totally forgot all about The King’s Mass. This is probably why I subconsciously avoided visiting during Christmas season,” Charlie murmured to Scully, “I guess I’ll have to don on some khakis.” He glances over at Scully, “and you look like you’re a government agent. Shouldn’t you dress in something more festive?” Scully shrugs.

“I packed an overnight bag, but I didn’t account for Mass this morning. I’ll be fine. I’m sure Tara or Mom bought me a nice scarf or something this year for me to throw on.”

Within the next couple of hours, the Scully family festivities went underway filled with chatter, coffee, spiced cider, cinnamon buns, and Christmas music playing in the background. Matthew is the main star as he wobbly walks to his Nana, allows Auntie Dana to hold him, and pats the shiny boxes that keep coming his way. Charlie stays in the background taking photographs. The adults exchange presents, with mostly Tara and their mom oohing and ahhing over presents they unwrap. Scully merely grins and offers her thanks until she opens a box from Tara that housed a royal blue blouse tunic with a scoop neckline. She gasps in amazement; she hears a click and shutter from Charlie’s camera.

“Looks like you have your festive outfit,” he says. Scully admits to her family that she plans to wear the tunic for mass as her family breaks out in laughter. She excuses herself to quickly change.

As Bill, Tara, and their mom get ready for mass, Scully tidies up the living room while Charlie entertains Matthew. “So what’s up with Fox? Why doesn’t he join us?” Scully looks at Charlie in surprise.

“He goes by Mulder and he doesn’t celebrate Christmas.” Charlie hums.

“I’ve been taking photos this whole morning, Dana. You’re here, but you’re not here. It shows.”

“I just have a lot on my mind.” Charlie shakes his head as he lets Matthew study his camera.

“No, you have this far-off look in your eyes. A restlessness about you. I recognize that look anywhere.”

“What are you trying to say, Charlie?” He purses his lips and shrugs, their conversation ending as they hear the rest of the family returning downstairs.

Bill rented an SUV that could transport all of them to the church, but Charlie insists that they take two cars.

“I wanna catch up with Dana!” Charlie announces as he runs to the passenger side door.

“Really, Charlie? I’m tired of driving,” Scully whines, but she walks to the driver’s side and unlocks her car.

Chapter 3. The King’s Mass

The Kings’ Mass at St. Mary’s Church was full of generational families much like the Scully clan. Their mom waved at many of the churchgoing ladies, offering well wishes and season’s greetings as she led them to her usual pew. Tara, Matthew, and Bill sat in the row first, followed by their mom, Scully, then Charlie. The service started with the usual procession of the pew boys, then the priest, Father Bennett, and the deacons. They had a larger than usual choir having some of the Sunday School children participating in today’s service. Just when the priest welcomed everyone to the church and encouraged all to greet their fellow brothers and sisters, Charlie turns to Scully and says, “I think you should head back home after service.”

“What?” she hissed through a fake grin as she waves at a family two pews ahead.

“You heard me, Sis. Just go.” Scully gives him a look as she sits down waiting to listen to the choir sing before the liturgy. Charlie pesters her again when they stand up to recite the hymns from the church bulletin. He causes enough commotion for their mom to give them a pointed look. Scully glances at her apologetically.

“You two are worse than Matthew,” she whispers leaning back for the two to see Matthew passed out in Bill’s arms. They sit back down again for the sermon after a deacon recited Isaiah 9:6 where Father Bennett spoke in detail of the miraculous birth of their Lord and Savior, symbolizing hope and love to mankind, but not without the struggles and sacrifice that Joseph and Mary had to endure to travel to Bethlehem.

“...so let us be reminded of His enduring love for us as we celebrate his arrival with loved ones. To not forget the road traveled for all of us to be here in this room. Let us honor his arrival with a giving spirit, full of compassion and empathy towards our fellow man,” Father Bennett concluded, “Now, as we begin communion, let us feel His loving spirit surround us.”

“Now’s your chance, Dana,” Charlie says as the pew rows were systematically dispersing to line up for communion, “Just make a break for it. You heard what Father Bennett said ‘celebrate with loved ones.’”

“I am celebrating with loved ones!” she responds a little too loudly as they stand at the ready for the church volunteer to beckon them to get in line.

“Mom, can you talk some sense into Dana, please?” Charlie says turning around giving their mom a knowing look, “I know you saw what I saw this morning. You can’t deny it.” She sighs in resignation, lips pressed together.

“Dana, I’m glad we got to spend time with you this morning, but Charlie’s right-- a part of you isn’t with us, it’s someplace else.” She gives Scully a fierce hug. “We’ll see you later this week. Charlie is staying for a couple more days before he flies out to the Netherlands. Now, go. You have some matters to attend to.” Scully’s eyes turn glassy as she manages not to cry. She smiles against her mom’s shoulder and gives her a quick peck on the cheek. She mouths and waves goodbye to Bill and Tara who each had a curious expression on their faces. Charlie gives her a quick hug and waves goodbye to her as he stands aside to let her out of the pew. She can hear Bill asking their mom where she’s going, and her mom answering that she has to attend to matters of love. Scully walks out of the church with one destination in mind.

Chapter 4. Give vs. Offer

It seems that no one left Hegal Place as Scully had to park a block away nearby a liquor store. She quickly runs into the store and purchases some items for the day. The afternoon weather is nippy, but tolerable with a heavy coat she had placed in the back of her car as she briskly walks on the sidewalk, being careful not to slip. She doesn’t know whether Mulder is at his place or not; it didn’t occur to her to give him a call during her trip. The early snowfall that morning had covered all the parked cars, making it difficult to identify which car is his. She finally arrives at his building, promptly taking off the heavy coat from the extreme temperature change. She knows her hair looks unkempt again from the weather as she takes the elevator up to the fourth floor. She can’t decide whether her heart was rapidly beating from the brisk walk or the notion that Mulder might not be home. Scully raps on the door sharply, causing the “2” in “42” to be slightly askew. To her relief, she hears muffled footsteps behind the door. The door cracks open revealing a disheveled Mulder dressed in sweatpants and a white t-shirt. He braces himself against the door frame with his right forearm as he rubs his eyes. His left hand still on the doorknob.

“Scully? What are you doing here? Shouldn’t you be with your family?” he asks in a gravelly voice, eyes squinting from the hallway light. She realizes she must have woken him up from his sleep. His eyes come into focus, and she can see him take in her appearance. “Is this how you usually dress at family gatherings? Maybe I should accompany you next time you go.” She feels a blush forming on her cheeks.

“I couldn’t stop thinking about the movie this entire morning,” she says, averting her gaze away from Mulder’s form, staring down at her boots. “It’s been bothering me, how Sandra Bullock’s character is in love with what looks like a huge asshole.” She looks up at him slightly flustered, “And Mulder! Even if I had watched ‘While You Were Sleeping’, I wouldn’t have caught on with the line you misquoted. The character’s mom gave her dad the world, which by the way is not a snow globe but a regular globe. So, I can only deduce that the actual line is ‘I give you the world’ not ‘I offer you the world.’” Mulder looks amused.

“To be fair, Scully, I only watched the movie once on cable. I thought I got the gist of the phrase, especially when paired with the snow globe I grabbed at Grand Rapids to show you. It appears much later in the movie by the way.”

“But ‘give,’ and ‘offer’ are two very different words, Mulder,” she continues, “Their meaning is completely different in context. ‘I give’ means that there are no strings attached to this phrase, no conditions set in place, while ‘I offer’ allows the other party a chance to accept or decline the option.” Scully knows she’s rambling, but she can’t stop herself. She holds up the plastic bag in her hands.

“For instance, I’m offering you this bag full of items I purchased at the corner liquor store. It contains components to make delicious hot chocolate—you still owe me hot chocolate, Mulder--”

“Of all the things to begrudge me for, it’s hot chocolate?”

“Hot chocolate, milk, whipped cream, chocolate sprinkles, marshmallows, and peppermint sticks. And since it’s around lunch time, I even purchased some gourmet frozen dinners because I know the state of your fridge and pantry, Mulder. A man can’t suffice on sunflower seeds alone.” Mulder’s grinning at this point. He unbraces himself from the door frame and reaches for the bag, but Scully holds it away from him.

“Mulder, this is an offer. Offers usually come with conditions from the party presenting it.”

“State your conditions then, Scully.” He drawls as he leans against the door frame crossing his arms.

“I want you to be the one to prepare hot chocolate for the both of us. I also want to finish watching the movie. I want to see how Sandra Bullock’s character goes from thinking she’s in love with an asshole to falling in love with Bill Pullman’s character.”

“Well, what are you waiting for?” Mulder’s eyes shone brightly as he stared at her intently. Her eyes slightly widened at his question. He straightens himself up and fully opens the door. He motions with his head as he says, “Get in here, Scully.”

She exhales a breath as she crosses the threshold. Mulder murmurs, “I was thinking about you all morning too” as he closes the door behind her.
