“How’d you get stuck with babysitting duty anyway?” Boba asked one day during dinner. “Oh, I volunteered for this,” Fox told him. “Why the kark would you do that?” “Language,” Fox admonished. “Well, I was just living my normal boring life and I thought to myself, ‘I don’t get called an ugly piece of banthashit often enough.’ So I decided to adopt you.” Boba snorted. “You’re a psychopath,” he told Fox. “I’ve been called worse,” Fox replied breezily. Boba doesn’t find a new family and Fox doesn’t become anybody’s dad; an adoption story.

“What,” Wolffe strained out, “is that.”

Cody nodded and flicked a thumb at him.

“That,” Fox imitated with a sneer, “is art.”

“I love it,” Bly smiled.

Fox reeled back a bit. “Maybe I should change it.”

“Isn’t it a bit on the nose?” Cody asked. “With the whole,” he gestured, a bit helplessly, “getting your heart flayed while giving the middle finger?”

“You’re one to talk, Hotspot.”

Bly flopped his head in his hands, flower petals drifting down. “TenTen, your grasp on metaphorical expressions is amazing. I love how you subverted—“

Fox snorted “I ran out of caf. It’s not that deep.”

Wolffe quirked an eyebrow. “Really.”

“So far,” Fox turned back to Cody, “I’ve had Senators point out how impressed they are I lay my life, nay, my heart on the line for their safety. One screamed because they thought I was covered in blood. One explained to me in detail how red is the foremost chosen color for love. And one asked if I painted over a womp rat by accident.”

Wolffe just looked at him while the others slowly ended the call on their ends. His cybernetic eye tracking every muscle twitch Fox couldn’t hide. The second white streak in his hair.

“It’s interrogation time, I assume,” he started but Wolffe cut him off.

“How did you die, Fox.”

He crossed his arms. “That’s a really personal question.”

“How did you die.”

“You want the 3 or 5 story arc version?” His muscles boiled under his cold skin. He needed to get out. Do anything but be present in this holocall.

“How did you die.”

“I don’t have time for this—“

“Fox,” Wolffe’s voice soft, and he hated the contradictory responses that tone evoked, “how did you die?”

“I don’t know, okay,” he yelled and clenched his jaw tight. The air in his lungs struggled to do its job, and he would not have a panic attack on top of all the indignity. “I don’t know,” he enunciated slowly, teeth gritting. “The blond one found me—“

“The blond..?” Wolffe blinked at him. “You mean Thire?”

Right, yes. Fuck. Thire. That was his name. Every morning he repeated all their names to himself and still— “Thire found me unconscious. I was already alive again.” Curse going haywire and making everyone work through their fear of it as they had carried him back to the barracks. He took a deep breath, anger and helplessness burning through his veins, the gaps in his memories. “I don’t know how I died. Or what happened. Or who killed me.”
