i'm gonna tag: @fowl-fox @fowlblue @sadbitchapologist @valhelos and anyone else that wants to <3
Favourite time of day: sunset!
Favourite aesthetic: those like cozy mountain homes you see in the woods, not quite cottagecore and not quite rustic cabin, but somewhere in the middle
Colour that describes you: uhhhhh idk probably some kind of like soft pink? something kind of cute and like grandma-old-soul-ish, and soft. was also the colour of my childhood bedroom up until i was about 13, so.
Favourite quote: currently? "the time will pass anyway." I'm trying to devote more time to hobbies, and it's a useful one for when my brain says "oh but doing X takes up so much time!"
Current obsession: back to fixating on the wild west/ cowboy fic i want to write. printed out like a dozen jstor articles today to read for that.
Favourite texture: i used to have a pet rabbit. she was part Rex, which is a breed known for having fur that feels like velvet. She was very very soft and that's probably my favourite texture ever.
Favourite outfit (or outfit you wish you had in your closet): leather jacket (mine is brown, but black would be cool), either my black crop-top that says "reading is cool" or my black tank that has a high collar and a little cutout between the collarbone and bust area, black cargo pants, and some cute heeled boots.
World/universe/place you see yourself living: Yeah, see above about the aesthetic? that's the dream, baby!
Favourite flower: oxeye daisy!

No More Fairies
based on a post by @fowlblue
consider this my entry for the last day of fowlfest, because i DID use my little fowl oc
also happy birthday to this loser <3
tw for descriptions of bullet wounds, a broken leg, and general gore
Artemis had always known there was something amiss about the great manor he called home. Perhaps it was something about the way the corridors grew still and quiet in the dead of night, or how the portraits of ancestors long gone gazed at him from within their ornate frames, eyes trailing after him as he stalked down the halls of the manor.
Artemis had ignored the apprehension that curled up his spine and rested in his heart when he walked down the halls at night. He had schemes to plot and a fairy to kidnap.
Despite that apprehension, it came as quite a surprise to Artemis when he was welcomed with open arms into the afterlife by decades, perhaps even centuries worth of ancestors soon after his body dropped, the images of Butler and Holly fading from his vision.
Artemis spent most of his time trailing after his younger brothers, gazing at them from all sides with whited out, glazed over eyes and occasionally attempting to pet their hair. Neither of them quite understood what was going on, all they really knew was that their mother wailed at night and their father had become airy and distant.
They also knew that their older brother was gone. They would go looking for him in the mornings. Myles would pack bags with water bottles and vision-enhancing goggles stolen from their brother's lab, whose security system was left mysteriously deactivated every morning while Beckett announced to the house that they were off to search for Artemis.
Their mother's eyes would go glassy. She'd give them a watery smile and tell them to do their best. Their father never said anything.
Occasionally Juliet would tag along with them, lifting Beckett into tree branches where he would call his brother's name and accidentally kick eggs out of their nests. Butler insisted that he had to stay at the manor, in case Artemis returned and needed his assistance. Both twins noticed the crack in his voice when he explained his reasoning, but neither thought to comment on it. They were too busy trying to locate Artemis.
All the while, Artemis would follow the troupe as they searched, occasionally leading them away from the more dangerous paths. All the way, Myles and Beckett insisted that they were getting closer. Both boys claimed that they could 'feel' Artemis getting closer. Eventually they would stray too far from the manor, and Artemis would feel that tug in his chest - or his soul, more accurately - and he'd drift back home.
On one such morning, the twins and Juliet had set off into another pointless hunt, and Artemis decided to stay home. Over the weeks, Artemis had become well acquainted with his deceased ancestors. Aine, a little girl who passed away at eight years old, liked to trail after him, jabbering on about her life and all the animals they had when she was alive. She also liked to ask questions about the world outside of Fowl Manor, like if any new animals had been discovered. She also seemed unusually interested in Ireland's political climate. One of the older ghosts explained that politics were one of her main interests when she was alive. Her parents were nowhere to be found, as they had both died of old age and passed on peacefully.
Artemis would answer every question to the best of his ability. Aine's enthusiasm for knowledge reminded him of himself in his younger years.
He would pointedly ignore the way she limped after him down the halls, broken leg dragging behind her painlessly, and the sticks and leaves stuck in her hair, as well as the brains and viscera leaking from the side of the little girl's head. All of it was the aftermath of falling from a particularly high tree.
That morning, Aine was toddling after Artemis, holding his hand as he wandered vaguely to his father's study. He caught his reflection on the freshly polished tile floor, courtesy of Butler. If he were still alive, his breath would've caught in his throat. He stared, standing still in the corridor.
His own face looked back at him, unscarred and unbloodied, unlike the majority of the other Fowls and Butlers who still resided in the manor. The only indication that he was a ghost was the gaping hole where Holly's eye should've been.
Aine tugging on his arm was enough to pull him from his trance. The others in the manor referred to that experience as 'trapped in your own reflection.' Most needed another ghost to pull them away, or else they'd stay there until their view was obstructed.
Artemis and Aine continued down the hall. Artemis's Great Grandpa Finian was sticking his head through the door of Artemis the First's study, listening in on a private conversation. Artemis could hear his snickers from outside.
Grandpa Finian's Butler, Nikita - who was a lot more Russian than the other Butlers, Artemis noted - was leaning against the wall, shaking his head at his charge's antics. Nikita had told Artemis that his great grandfather had 'no basic respect for the corporeal.'
"What's going on?" Aine asked, tugging on Grandpa Finn's jacket. Finian pulled his head from the door, an impish grin flashing at them from below his fluffy black mustache.
Despite being his great grandfather, Grandpa Finn was rather young, only in his late twenties. His sudden death was the cause of him kidnapping the teenage daughter of an important political figure in the eighties and holding her for ransom.
His most notable feature was the bullet wound in his forehead, blood and bits of brain and brain fluid perpetually oozing from his head, just like Aine. Nikita had a bullet wound in his forehead too, just like Grandpa Finn.
Both bullet wounds were caused by said kidnapping.
"Family meeting." Finn said, wiping a dribble of blood away from his whited out eye. "Seems to me that your dear old dad is not happy."
"Father?" Artemis asked. He poked his head through the door next to Grandpa Finn. Aine and Nikita followed.
Artemis Senior, Angeline Fowl, and Butler were in the study. Angeline and Butler were standing before Artemis the First. The Fowl patriarch's voice was stern. Artemis had heard that tone before, when he was a lot younger. Artemis Senior was putting his foot down.
"I understand that this may be upsetting to some." The man said.
"He sounds like he's conducting a business meeting." Artemis whispered to the others, as if his father might hear him.
Artemis Senior continued. "But because of...what happened to our son, I've decided to make a rule of sorts."
Angeline and Butler glanced between each other as Senior took a breath.
"No more fairies." He said, voice hardened. Both Angeline and Butler's eyes widened.
Artemis gasped. No more fairies? That meant Holly, Foaly, Mulch, and No. 1 wouldn't be able to visit them anymore. He'd have to wait until he found a way to pass on, and then wait for one of his fairy friends to pass on as well, and god knew how long fairies lived for.
Next to him, Grandpa Finn was spluttering, rivers of blood streaking down his face and neck. Nikita rubbed his forehead tensely, smearing blood across it. Aine was looking up at Artemis with watering eyes.
"He doesn't mean that, does he, Arty?" She asked. Even though Aine was far too young to understand the complexities of fairy folk, she'd had her own run in with them during her life. She was throwing rocks at birds when she ended up hitting a low-flying sprite. She then sat on the sprite's back after he crashed, pinning his wings to the ground and refusing to let him up until he'd told her everything he could about the politics of his homeland.
She'd been mind-wiped for that, but mind-wipes tend to wear off soon after death.
"No, no, he doesn't mean it, Aine." Artemis said in as soothing a voice he could muster. Aine clung to his leg, whimpering.
Soon after, more Fowls and Butlers drifted towards the study, sensing the distress coming from the three living beings in the room and checking in to see what was the matter.
They all listened to Artemis Senior go on about how fairies were a danger to the family because of what had become of Artemis. The more he went on, the more agitated the ghosts around him became, mumbling and muttering to each other.
"But Timmy, no one meant for that to happen!" Angeline stepped towards her husband. The specters around them mumbled in agreement. "Holly said that the whole thing was Arty's idea, no fairy forced him to do anything!"
"It doesn't matter if a fairy forced him to or not, what matters is that our son is dead!" Artemis Senior was steadily raising his voice. A couple ghostly heads turned to look at Artemis. He paid them no mind, he just glanced between his parents and Butler.
"...Mister Fowl," Butler began. "I understand that you view fairies as a danger to the Fowls, and believe me, I've seen the harm that can be done with fairy technology, but I must ask that you reconsider. While it's true that Artemis's life had been endangered multiple times throughout the years ever since his discovery of The People, it was fairies and their technology who were able to save him. Save me."
The Butlers in the room cheered at Butler for stepping up to his employer. His cousin, Dmitri, whose head was little more than red gore, went to pat him on the back, but his gnarled hand passed right through him. Artemis himself felt his chest swell with something that might've been pride.
"No, Butler." Artemis Senior insisted. "The People have involved themselves with this family quite eno-"
Butler interrupted him.
"With all due respect, Mister Fowl, The People haven't involved themselves with anyone. It was Artemis's idea to kidnap Captain Short."
The specters cheered for Butler, and Artemis found himself cheering along with them.
Artemis Senior slammed his hands on his desk, standing abruptly. Artemis flinched hard, even though he was on an entirely separate plane than his father. The cheering from the ghosts quieted down immediately. They all watched as Senior marched up to Butler, getting closer to him than anyone else would dare. He scowled at him, lips pulled back like he was baring his teeth.
"Are you saying that this is Artemis's fault?" He asked manically, on the verge of yelling. Grandpa Finn put a hand on Artemis's shoulder. "That my son killed himself?!"
"Artemis!" Angeline cried out. It was the first time she'd called her husband by his full first name in years.
Butler, face placid, put a hand on Artemis Senior's shoulder, gingerly pushing him back. When he spoke, his voice was more gentle than Artemis was expecting.
"You know that's not what I mean." He said.
Just like that, Senior's anger evaporated. He lumbered back over to his desk and dropped himself into his chair. Despite her anger at his outburst, Angeline went to tend to him. Butler stayed where he was.
Artemis Senior's fingers were steepled, a pose that reflected his son more than himself.
"...I stand by what I said." He spoke slowly. "No more fairies. In fact," He stood up, and that anger from before made itself known. "No fairies are allowed within ten kilometers of Fowl Manor. I'll be making this rule known to Captain Short," he all but spat her name. "the next time she visits."
The room exploded with chaos. All around Artemis, the ghosts of his ancestors shouted and yelled. Grandpa Finn, who still had his hand on Artemis's shoulder, was looking up at his Butler and spluttering.
"No fairies in Fowl Manor, can you believe that, Nikita?!" he exclaimed. Finian was one of the Fowls who were rather ignorant when it came to The People, but that didn't mean he hadn't had his own run-ins with them, a group of irritated dwarves to be specific.
Nikita crossed his arms over his chest, glaring daggers at the back of Artemis Senior's head. It might've been a coincidence, but the man rubbed the back of his head as his wife pleaded with him to reconsider.
Little Aine began to cry. Her grip on Artemis's leg tightened, and she buried her face in his pant leg. Artemis crouched down to wrap his arms around her, cradling her. Some of her blood smeared on his sleeve as he held her, but he didn't pay any mind to it. The stain would disappear after a few minutes anyway.
Before they could fall down her red cheeks, Aine's tears floated up out of her eyes and pooled on the ceiling in a gravity-defying puddle.
Somewhere in the room, Artemis could hear his Aunt Saoirse shouting, "No fairies! Of all the ignorant ideas!" Her eyeball dangled from her eye socket, thwapping against her cheek as she gestured wildly in rage.
Artemis's other aunt, Aunt Siobhan, who was trampled to death by a group of centaurs, was yelling at Artemis Senior, calling him every name she could think of.
Even Uncle Kieran, who was nothing more than a charred skeleton, was clacking his crispy jaw in outrage.
The fury in the room produced by the specters was so intense that it began to interfere with the living world. Books were quivering from their spots in the bookshelf, as if they were afraid. Potted plants were beginning to shimmy in their pots until their roots were ripped from the dirt and, though no one was there to see it, the chandelier in the main hall was swinging in frenzied circles.
Artemis looked up at his mother. She was asking his father over and over again to reconsider, but all of her pleas were met with stubborn silence. With a huff, she turned and marched out the door, walking straight through Artemis and Aine. She shivered as she stepped into the hall.
Butler was standing in front of Artemis Senior's desk, features etched in stone. He was looking down at his employer with hard eyes. Without a word, he turned and left, passing through Artemis and Aine. He shivered.
It seemed to Artemis Senior that he was alone. In actuality, the ghosts of his ancestors were glaring at him from all sides. One by one, the specters drifted off, phasing through walls and grumbling curses directed at Artemis's father.
Artemis was still holding Aine.

I’ve taken to drawing small Artemis with grippy socks because I know in my heart that with his poor coordination + how polished the floors of the manor must be that he would not last long without them.

In the Artemis Fowl Files, Artemis mentions that, were he not very busy doing crime, he’d go into psychology. Taking this a step further: imagine if he became a psychologist who worked with genius kids because 1) from what we know, his own childhood therapists did not seem to have helping him in mind and 2) Artemis knows all the tricks in the obnoxious genius book

Do you think befriending Artemis was, for the members of the People, like when you unlock a villain as a playable character where they suddenly aren’t nearly as powerful/scary as when you fought them?
Artemis Book One: has the ability to destroy the lives of the People as they know it
Artemis Book Two: complaining about running

Thanks for the tag @fowlblue sorry it took me so long to see it.
"Can you tell me what Artemis told you about those 'work friends,' dear?" Holly asked, mesmer now much thicker than she had expected she'd need to use.
"Well, he gives us a bunch of different names, Hailey, Francess, Noah, Harry, Lance, but I'm pretty sure they're all the same four or five people based on the way he talks about them and stories he tells. And, the stories, they're really sad. He presents them like they're funny, but his friends, it sounds like they're so mean to him all the time, it scares me a little." Danny sighed. "I'm not here to tell him how to live his life, but I wonder if he's ok; he doesn't seem like he's ok."
Holly swallowed roughly, and not only from the mesmer's strain on her voice; it didn't sound like Artemis's new friends suspected he was involved in anything supernatural, but this, this was so much worse.
I'm not counting the dialog tag as a sentence cause I'm not.
Idk if you've got anything in the works right now, but if you do @orangerosebush 👀 (you don't have to but I love seeing your writing)

6 sentence tag game - thanks to @orangerosebush and @fowlblue for tagging me! How very sweet of you
An excerpt from the final chapter of Luck of the Irish
-----////------
“That’s exactly what I wanted to discuss with you," his father's tone unsubtly shifted from casual to grave.
Artemis had been taught how to play chess by his father. He could barely remember how old he was when he discovered the round chess table tucked away in a corner of the drawing room. The soft white shade of ivory matched his own small hand as he reached over and clutched the white king. His delight over the game only grew when his father found him at bedtime with the chess pieces scattered on his bed and promised he’d teach Artemis how to play.
From the very beginning Artemis played white.
And yet his father made the opening move.
-----////-----
On mobile so I'm not tagging anyone but if you're reading this and want to flex a fic you're probably never going to finish do it

Détente, indeed
Alex hated being put on bodyguard duty.
Todestrieb
As it turned out, there was a spark left in the defibrillator.
Craquelure
There was a certain defensiveness that seemed to pervade Mother’s demeanor when something bothered her — Artemis had seen her act like this before she’d asked Father to abandon his less-than-legal business pursuits.
Kunēgetikós
When the SWAT team pulled a gibbering Jon Spiro out of Phonetix’s R&D lab, Foaly sat back in his office and, a tad smugly, congratulated himself on another job well done.
Living Water
The most curious thing about the odd relationship between the bodyguard and his charge was that it was an inversion of the process of parenting.
À droit, à gauche
William Golding, known to many of students simply as 'Scruff' due to the scraggly, white beard that threatened to dominate his aged face, spent a great deal of his adult life working as a school teacher.
Dishabille
The three-piece suit is one of Napoleon Bonaparte’s lesser-known fingerprints on history.
Rabbit-holes
“Artemis?”
Fowl business
It is an extraordinarily difficult thing to be bored when you are eleven.

There comes a time in every person’s life when they look up at the night sky — really look at the night sky, not just briefly glance up at it — and are struck by just how small this blue dot in the galaxy is in the grand scheme of things.
To hold the fruit in our hands
December had snuck its way up on Ireland’s shores, all too quickly stealing the vibrantly colored autumn leaves from the tree branches and banishing to a distant memory the milder winds.
The Bartleby Years
Sean McElhinney leaned his chair back, pushing carefully against the ground as to make the front two legs leave the ground without actually being in danger of tipping the whole thing over.
Vanity makes you say things like “I deserved a better life than this"
Lili handed the pixie working at the cash register her card, smiling politely as she waited for the purchase to ring through.

Through the looking glass

i was tagged by @valhelos, thanks!!!
Took some thinking to actually decide on some faves, but here we go!
Tumblr media
Animal: foxes! I just think they're neat :). pretty colours, look fluffy, interesting niche in the environment, clever little buggers... really dig them
Movie: Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day. Hands down one of my favourite pieces of comfort media, it is very cute and soft. It's based on a book, which isn't quite as good, but still enjoyable. movie has great casting and is a very fun watch :)
Season: Autumn! Love the weather, love the colours, love the activities, and my birthday is in autumn!
Character: Domovoi Butler from the Artemis Fowl series. Sometimes I fixate on others, but he has been living rent free in my head for a while now. Here he is represented with a gun because no canon pics of him really do him justice imo, and i didn't want to nick any artists rendition without permission, though both @iesnoth and @hop-a-lot have amazing portrayals of him.
Colour: purple or green, depending on specific shade. Some shades of grey. If clouds are doing the thing where they are grey but have like purple tints i am always jazzed.
Hobby: papercrafting, specifically card making! I also like reading and building jigsaw puzzles, but the mix of creativity and precision in cardmaking makes my brain go brrr more than anything.
Book: Corambis by Sarah Monette. This one comes with the caveat in that it is the fave BECAUSE of the other three books that come before it. It's fantastic on it's own, don't get me wrong, but the emotions hit harder after reading the other three in the Doctrine of Labyrinths series. I could go on for hours about this series so will deliberately cut myself off here, but seriously it's such a good series!!!
Song: For The Dancing and the Dreaming, originally from How to Train Your Dragon 2, but specifically the rendition by Hound + Fox. It's such a sweet song, and this version is very soft and lovely. My husband and I danced to it as our first dance at our wedding :)
Drink: Hot chocolate, with marshmallows or whipped cream and chocolate sauce or sprinkles or all of the above! I tend to drink tea in my daily life, but have such a sweet tooth i couldn't NOT include hot chocolate.
this was fun! gonna tag @zahnie and @sadbitchapologist and @fowlblue and @fowl-fox and anyone else that wants to do this, though no pressure either way. template below

Last Song: Whiskey on You by Nate Smith
Last Show: Andromeda. Watched s3e4 last night. it's a weird show; it's space battles, and the main character is all "oh we have to solve problems diplomatically to restore the light of civilization and rebuild the commonwealth of nations!" and then runs around blatantly murdering anyone who disagrees with him. Not a lot of attempts at peaceful resolution.
Currently Watching: is this...is this different from 'last show'? Because I don't generally watch a lot of stuff...I suppose I'm part way through s2 of Elementary, part way through s1 of an ATLA rewatch, and still have the second half of Die Hard to get through from Christmas
Currently Reading: books with bookmarks currently in them are Weird on the Outside by Shelley Stoehr, The Elements of Eloquence by Mark Forsyth, and Every Tool's a Hammer by Adam Savage. Yesterday, I started (and finished, but it's less than 300 pgs) Minimum Wage Magic by Rachel Aaron, and I intend to start the sequel to it (Part-Time Gods) either today or tomorrow, depending on how today goes. I also found my library card while typing this out and moving some stuff on my little table, so that's good! No need to keep manually typing in my account number!
Current Obsession: always and forever Artemis Fowl, but also atm the stuff set in the universe Rachel Aaron created for her Heartstriker and The DFZ series (where Minimum Wage Magic take place).
I think i'm gonna tag @fowlblue, @fowl-fox, @witherydithery, and @orangerosebush, plus anyone else who wants to do it

Thank you so much to @popsicle-stick @fowlblue @sophieisdone45 and @anjupear for tagging me (I’m collating the mentosmorii/orangerosebush mentions here for readability)! Also, if you mentioned liking my fanfic, know that I owe you one (1) life debt (seriously, tysm :’’)!  )
#1) who’s your favorite character & why?
Gonna have to go with Butler! I feel like as I’ve returned to the series, again and again, I am always stricken by the way he fills the role of a protector for the people in his life beyond merely being a fighter; his capacity for nurturing and selflessness make him one of my favorites.
#2) what’s one of your favorite scenes in the books?
There’s a scene in book 5 where Artemis and Minerva are just like, randomly squabbling over art and its value, and beyond it being v. funny, I think it was a great way to differentiate them and how they approach intelligence.
#3) if you could be any species of fairy, which one would you be?
Isn’t the whole schtick associated with the kraken in book 5 that it sleeps for centuries? That very much appeals to me, coming out of finals seasons, lol.
#4) do you read af fic? if so, drop one of your favorites!
Yes, I do! The following fic is a WIP, but I think that what is uploaded now stands as a nice snapshot into the world the author’s created.
Too Sentimental by Fowl Fox on ffnet
Artemis Senior reflects on his past and the people he’s lost as he deals with his own current insecurities regarding his wife and son. Takes place between books 4 & 5, as well as decades before then.
It’s an interesting look at what would happen if Fowl Sr. were to become curious about his son’s involvement with the criminal underworld, though ultimately, he’s not quite right about which ‘underworld’ that is. It’s 2 chapters, and it’s quite good!
#5) give your ranking of the books from best to worst!
Probably Eternity Code (3), Artemis Fowl (1), Arctic Incident (2), Opal Deception (4), Lost Colony (5), Time Paradox (6), Last Guardian (8), Atlantis Complex (7). Though, TAC is the only one I don’t care for.
#6) if you could say anything to any of the characters, what would it be?
Probably congratulate Juliet on carving out her own path in life, difficult though it might have been to break from centuries of family tradition. That, or tell Butler to take some time off from work, lmao.
#7) if you’re comfortable w it, share one of your favorite headcanons about the series <3
Probably a toss-up between transmasc headcanons for Artemis or the theory that the Major faked his death in the Arctic Incident, and is still out there, somewhere.
#8) what’s one thing that you would change about the series?
I think I would ask it to engage more deeply with its themes, though I do understand the structure of the series is kind of serialized (and, moreover, still a children’s series at the end of the day). This ranges from having it tackle the implications of mental health beyond the scene-by-scene potential for comedy or drama, to expanding upon the kind of society Haven is technologically and politically beyond (as I said) scene-by-scene potential for comedy or drama (like, dig a little deeper into the power afforded to the Council! Look at how the LEP functions beyond the “one bad apple” Commander plot with Sool).
#9) if we’re not counting book one Artemis, who’s your favorite villain & why?
The human villains in general — I thought Spiro and Fission Chips were incredibly fun, as were Kronksi and the Extinctionists, and, arguably, Minerva!
#10) how did you get into the series/when did you first read it?
I’d say most likely around 3rd grade? We’d gone to the library, and my dad accidentally picked up book 1 from the display section under the impression that it was adult fiction, lost interest after discovering that no, in fact, it was not, and then he handed it off to me.
Tag?
If you’re reading this, then take this as a tag from me! I scrolled through the notes on Sophie’s original post, and it seems as though a fair amount of the fan base has already been tagged in some capacity, and I don’t want to clog anyone’s notifs. Also, thanks + kudos to Sophie for making this!
