馃悹 Daily Fish Fact: 馃悹
Leafy Seadragon: The name is derived from their appearance, with long leaf-like protrusions coming from all over the body that serve only as聽camouflage. The leafy seadragon propels itself utilizing a聽pectoral fin聽on the ridge of its neck and a聽dorsal fin聽on its back closer to the tail end. These small fins are almost completely transparent and difficult to see as they聽undulate聽minutely to move the creature sedately through the water, completing the illusion of floating聽seaweed. Popularly known as "leafies", they are the聽marine emblem聽of the state of聽South Australia聽and a focus for local marine conservation.

I want to be ur friend so bad but I am AWKWARDDDDD.
Anyways, lesser known facts about great whites? If not, cookie cutter shark my beloved
DWWW IM SO AWKWARD TOO BUT ID LOVE LOVE LOVE TO BE YOUR FRIEND PLSSS SEND ME A MESSAGE OR SMTH (if ur comfortable obvi 馃槶) AAAAH
although most sharks are cold-blooded, great whites are actually warm blooded! this means they can regulate their own body temperature!!
2. greats whites eyes are GLOW IN THE DARKKKK. they have a layer of reflective cells behind the retina which allows them to see better in the dark. COULD THEY GET ANY COOLER???
3. another biological feature of great whites is their highly toxic blood. research has shown that the levels of arsenic and mercury in their blood are so high that it would kill most animals. great whites however, seem to be adapted to this toxicity and are unharmed by it.

Fish Fact Friday! 3-8-24
Eastern Pigfish (scientific name Bodianus unimaculatus) are protogynous hermaphrodites, meaning that they are born female and change sex to male as they mature! At about 2 years old they're a mature female, and at 4 years old they're typically a mature male!

Ok, but here something about abyssal fishes: Did you k'now that anglerfishes have an toxic relationship with their partners?? That's happen bc de big fishes that you see are actually the female of the species, but you can't see the male one bc...They're in the belly's lady ones. They are very small, you can hardly see them, they act like parasites that should only be there to reproduce with the female, but end up merging with her body and end up sharing the same body forever, consuming a lot of energy and nutrients

馃悹 Daily Fish Fact: 馃悹
The Ornate Ghost Pipefish, or harlequin ghost pipefish, is a false pipefish. The species' name comes from the Greek paradoxos, referring to this fish's unusual external features. Although relatively common, ornate ghost pipefish are very well-camouflaged and difficult to find. It occurs either as solitary individuals or in pairs, among floating weeds, or crinoids where the feed on mysids and small benthic shrimp.

Exciting news for the cute shark lovers of the world! We finally have a recorded sighting of a baby great white shark, likely only a few hours old.
The question of where great white sharks give birth still remains a mystery to this day but this footage may suggest the coasts of California, where the footage was taken, are a site where these sharks give birth.

While researching for upcoming fish facts I ended up going down a rabbit hole on parrotfish teeth, and I need to share this information in another form than just a fish fact. This stuff is unbelievable. You know the beak of the parrotfish, right? It's formed from the fused teeth of the parrotfish, as an adaptation to have ample biting surface to scrape off and chew on coral, their main food source.
Tumblr media
A close-up of the beak of a parrotfish. It has this honeycomb pattern which I find very cool.
Well. To constantly chew on coral, they must have some pretty hard teeth, right? And they indeed do: the teeth of the parrotfish are made up of a mineral called fluorapatite, which forms intricate, chainmail-like woven structures on a microscopic level. Fluorapatite just so happens to be the second hardest biomineral found. This stuff, the parrotfish's teeth? A square inch of the parrotfish's teeth can withstand a whopping 530 TONS OF PRESSURE!!! That's the weight of 88 ELEPHANTS on top of a single square inch!!!! That's crazy, right!!?? The only biomineral that is tougher is the teeth of chitons, that is the single tougher biological thing in the whole world!!! Not only that, but the stiffness and hardness of the teeth increases the more we get closer to the tip (as the mineral fibers get closer and closer to one another), the very tips of the teeth even surpass the chiton teeth in stiffness!!!
Tumblr media
Here are pictures produced through a process called PIC mapping, which shows the size and orientation of crystal fibers at the tip of the teeth.
That feels like it shouldn't be right, no? You'd think that the toughest biominerals in the world would belong to, like, the skull of an animal that rams into rocks or maybe the shell of some animal, not the teeth! The teeth of chitons and parrotfish out of all animals no less! Who would've guessed that the diet of "rock animal" would make the parrotfish require some of the toughest dentition the world has ever seen, huh? That right there is one super good reason why you should never stick your finger in the mouth of one.
Every day I am blown away by how amazing fishes are....

I heard it's Superb Owl Sunday so I have prepared some superb owls for you.
Tumblr media
The barn owl is the most widespread species of owl, living on every continent except Antarctica. Their faces are shaped like a disk to help their hearing, giving them some of the best hearing of any owl. They mostly hunt by sound.
Tumblr media
Snowy owls are the largest arctic predatory birds, They are born with black feathers and get whiter as they age. Females usually have more dark feathers than males.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Eastern screech owls have a few feather variants that make them look like completely different species.
Tumblr media
The southern white-faced owl can increase its metabolic rate during winter to compensate for the cold and lack of food. They lay their eggs in nests built and abandoned by other birds.
Tumblr media
The great grey owl is the largest owl by length, but a lot of that is feathers and they're actually very light for their size. Their hearing is good enough to hear rodents burrowing through snow and they can break through hard-packed snow to catch prey.
Tumblr media
Blakiston's fish owl is the largest owl by mass and eats mostly fish. Despite the name, they may be more closely related to eagle owls than fish owls.
Tumblr media
The elf owl is the smallest owl species, barely larger than a sparrow. They hunt bugs and play dead when caught. They like to live in holes in saguaro cacti.
Tumblr media
Burrowing owls live in underground burrows. While they can dig, they mostly take over burrows from other animals. Farmers killing prairie dogs has severely reduced burrowing owl populations. They decorate their burrows with feces to attract bugs to eat.
The barking owl is called that because

Its nice to have a day to appreciate superb owls. Feel free to spread the love by reblogging with some more owl facts.

Cave fish time!!
Cryptotora thamicola or the waterfall climbing cave fish are extremely rare, found in only eight caves on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Like most cave fish they are blind and pigmentless but what makes them special is there ability to cling to walls and climb up flowing water.

earth fact time. this is NOT A DRILL! two great white sharks have become best friends!! their names are simon and jekyll and they've travelled together for over 4,000 miles. this is a huge discovery, because great white sharks are usually solitary creatures!
an important note is that these sharks aren't swimming side by side, and are usually a couple kilometres off from each other - but their trackers kept pinging in the same part of the ocean at the same time. scientists think they might be brothers, or following a previously unknown migratory path.
