She hated looking at herself.
That was the truth, Molly had hated looking at herself from the moment she became too old for unicorns. But what was there to be done? One could not turn back the hands of time, not without some cruel curse to come with it. What’s gone is gone, afterall. But Amalthea broke that rule. When Molly looked into Almalthea’s eyes (human as they currently might be) she didn’t see herself, in fact she didn’t see any one thing. What she saw in those dark eyes was everything she had ever dreamed of, reflected in the world’s smallest ocean.
The cat purred, rubbing against Molly’s leg. It brought her out of her mind and back to the cold stone pantry which she was kneeled in. “Don’t act so surprised that I found you,” the cat said, adding ‘s’ to the end of every possible word, “afterall, never a cat was born who couldn’t tell what is what, meow.”
“And what do you suppose you mean by that?” she said, looking straight ahead of her.
“Ah, it is blatantly obvious from those touching words that ye put in the good princes love poems. Those are true words they are, true true words.” The cat licked its paw, so sure of what it had said that it infuriated Molly. But she kept still.
“I do not love the lady Amalthea any more than I love the ocean,” Molly said, “or the forest.”
“That is a lie,” his meow slipped into a growl, “cat’s can not be deceived by lies, so don’t you even try, purr.”
“Damn you!” Molly pushed her palms into the stone, crying, “damn you, damn you. Why do you have to be so persistent?”
“Because the unicorn, or what once was a unicorn, feels the same way, meow. I can tell, meow.”
Molly stopped crying, she fell silent. Do you know the surreal lifting of your heart that sighs when the impossible may be truth, but is not sure enough to be happy? “That can’t be. Unicorns seek out virgins. Girls that are young and pure…”
“Ah, but as I remember you telling me,” the cat smirked, “this unicorn ignored the virgin you crossed. She saw one who held a golden bridle calling to her and she walked straight past, did she not?”
“That’s… true,” Molly said.
“And if she is bored of virgins, perhaps the old maid who she seeks more?”
“Don’t call me old,” the cook said, but she smiled. Behind her, there suddenly was a pressense; reminiscent of the weight of the moon hanging on her shoulders. She had felt that presence when the magician first arrived at her camp, but she now knew that the magician had not been the cause. “...my Lady,” Molly sighed, “what is your name?” She always wondered about that question.
“None now,” Amalthea said, “I am a unicorn without a unicorn’s body. Who is that at all? A noone has no name.”
“Still a unicorn,” Molly turned around, “and don’t you think anything different.”
“My heart is changing,” Amalthea’s voice dropped to a whisper, “I’m scared of who I will become.” The woman brought a pale hand up to her face, shivering.
“Don’t hide your face,” Molly said, taking Amalthea’s hand and pulling it down, “your face is so new so don’t hide it. You may not stay that way for long.”
“I am dying…”
“I have been dying all my life, it’s not that bad!” Molly said, louder than she expected, “no that’s not what I mean. I meant that we’ll get you back to normal, you get to experience dying without death at the end, while Schmendrick is undying but he will die. I think that you have a better deal.”
“I am so scared,” Amalthea cried, “and the days keep slipping by… time isn’t crawling over me or passing me by, it’s running from me and I can’t catch it!”
“I know exactly how you feel,” Molly whispered. She focused on those eyes, “time stands still in your eyes. I wish I could be enveloped by your eyes.”
Amalthea collapsed suddenly, falling into Molly’s arms. She was not thin but her body was oddly light. “It’s okay, it’s okay,” Molly said, lowering to the floor. She lifted Amalthea’s chin to look at her, “you’re okay.”
“You’ve got it all wrong,” she croaked, “it’s… your eyes that are special. They hold so much time. I want to see it all, but it is locked away,” she brushed her pale hand across Molly’s tanned face. “Let me spend my life with you.”
“I can’t let you do that,” Molly decided, although she so wanted to accept “you need to go back to your forest eventually and I can’t come with you.”
“Then can I be with you right now?” she said, with her head now slumped over Molly’s lap, with fine white hair splayed over her thighs.
“I told you so, meow,” Molly imagined the cat’s voice. She raised a finger across Amalthea’s features, which were close to but not exactly human. They were still beautiful.
“What do you want from me?” Molly asked. Unicorns were often after something.
“You don’t have anything I can take,” Amalthea murmured, “you are no virgin. But could you share some memories with me?”
So, Molly told the unicorn about her childhood. How she had been outcast for her anger, and punished, but one friend always stuck with her. How Captain Cully rescued her from the bandits that murdered her family, and how she learnt how to feed twenty men with a single rat when the gold on the roads dried up, and how one time, under a veil of moonlight while the outlaws slept, she believed she saw a fairy, but it ran from her; and how she was so secretly scared that the unicorn would also run. She soon realised that Amalthea had fallen asleep, and was snoring softly. “Goodnight, love,” Molly sighed, giving the strange woman a new name.
After all, if Shmendrik could make up a name, why couldn’t she make up one of her own?

Welcome to my fic superlatives, where I hand out absolutely unasked-for awards to some of my favorite characters and stories from fics that I read this year. I was going to wait until the end of the year to do these, as I still have plenty of time to read, but honestly, if I don't do them now I'm going to forget that I planned to do them at all!

10 Sandman Fic Recs!
I was struck by the absolutely heady and incredible thought that I have reached a. 800+ followers, and b. can place upon your dashboards the fics of friends and also people with whom I would enjoy being friends, and who I think should get more attention. There's going to mostly be Not the Big Fics in this particular list (I will rec all the big ones I'm readin later!)
Therefore, in no particular order, and containing everything from gen, to Dreamling, to Hobrintheus (or w/e the name for it is lol), ~fic recs~
I'm so sorry that you have to have a body by Taxonamie (AO3, Gen, Teen & Up)
A different take on Dream's capture; Dream's POV.
I DO love some good old body horror, and this fic does SUCH a good good job of really exploring what it'd be like for something that's supposed to be Endless to suddenly be trapped in a continuously dying and rebirthing flesh suit. EXTREME Lady Amalthea vibes. Immaculate.
2. Holy Palmer's Kiss by quentintoo (AO3, Dreamling, General Audiences)
Good pilgrim, you do wrong your hand too much,
Which mannerly devotion shows in this;
For saints have hands that pilgrims' hands do touch,
And palm to palm is holy palmers' kiss.
I'm pretty sure this was the fic that sparked my intense obsession with longing and like, hand-touching and hand-kissing. Scintillating and sweet.
3. to sleep—perchance to dream by fishydwarrows (AO3, Dreamling, Explicit)
Hob Gadling remembers the night of 1889 well.
He dreams and dreams of ways it could've been different, but dreams are often a way of escaping a more terrible reality.
For me THEE Hob whump fic, because if you're going to have an immortal why not make him miserable for a time? Mind the tags, but the payoff is SO, so good. I've read this, I think, at least a half-dozen times.
4. Heat Wave by spqr (AO3, Dreamling, Explicit)
“Sounds like you’re horny to me,” says Matthew.
Somewhat similarly, this for me is THE "Hob Gadling fucks and fucks severely" fic. Everything spqr writes is solid gold, but Dream being Endlessly Horny for his good old friend is both amusing and SCREAMINGLY hot.
5. Eros in Pragma by Delta_Pavonis (AO3, Dreamling, Explicit)
In all his long centuries never had he really done something like this. It was exciting and terrifying and exhilarating and too many emotions all mashed together. He felt like his skin was vibrating.
Deep breath in. He could do this. He wanted to do this, desperately wanted to, a desire from deep in his bones. And yet… long breath out.
Hob walked over to one of his bedside tables and opened the drawer. There was only one item contained therein and he removed it with shaking hands.
The silver buckle jingled softly.
Here's a fun fact! I neither read nor wrote a lot of D/S before I got into Sandman, and now I do, and it's almost entirely because of this fic!
6. I have lately learned the difference by Chthonion (AO3, Dreamling, Mature)
While Dream is imprisoned, Hob dreams of prisons, until, one by one, all of them take the same shape: a glass cage.
Hob doesn't realize why until he meets Dream again, and the dreams don’t stop afterward.
Trauma, connection, and adventures in accidentally mixing two people’s subconscious demons together in the dreamscape.
This is just. SO good. I love anything that explores Dream's trauma wrt his imprisonment but chooses to do so through Dream's mindscape, and this delivers in spades. Let Hob Gadling smash more snowglobes 2k22.
7. point-set triangulation by therm0dynamics (AO3, Hob/Corinthian, Teen & Up)
Hob knows he is dreaming. He also knows he’s being hunted.
The dynamic between Hob and the Corinthian is FASCINATING -- they're truly mirrors of each other, both hungry for humanity, both wanting, both bound up in cosmic Endless bullshit. This is fairly tame, for the Corinthian, so if you're squeamish I can assure you that this is more psychological than visceral. There's an absolutely smoking hot sequel, though.
8. the pleasant punishment by romanticallyinept (AO3, Hob/Dream/Corinthian, Explicit)
“All right,” Hob says, fairly evenly, he thinks, for what he’s been presented with. “Would someone like to explain what’s going on?”
Dream has the decency to look slightly abashed, as if he only just realized that he showed up, unannounced, in his friend’s flat, with a nightmare in tow. But it’s only slightly, because he’s still Dream. “I would not ordinarily involve a human in the discipline of one of my creations,” he says, inclining his head slightly, “but you are no ordinary human, Hob Gadling.”
One day, one day, Hob will learn to keep his fool mouth shut.
Hey you know how I said I didn't used to be into D/S dynamics
Well if you weren't either, give this one a try. Gentle dom!Hob punishes a recalcitrant Corinthian while Dream watches. Surprisingly tender, incredibly sexy, lots of feel good subdrop soothing afterwards.
9. A Dream of Stars by jehannaford (AO3, Gen, General Audiences)
After the events of Watership Down, Fiver has a dream and is offered a choice. A very short story.
This is super short, super sweet, and super poignant. It's like 200 words, and it's worth every second of your time.
10. as long as this body shall endure by andunetir (AO3, Dreamling, Explicit)
Hob loves eating pussy.
(He knows he shouldn’t be thinking about this at school, but it’s free period and the Year Elevens are more than capable of supervising themselves, so sue him, he’s bored.)
There's not a ton of fic that explores gender through Hob's point of view, but this is one I keep coming back to again and again. Trans!Hob gives me ALL kinds of life, and this is a fascinating exploration of immortality and transness. Also, again, it's super hot.

It’s just a very early concept right now, but yes, I’d love to make it a full fic 🖤🖤🖤
Here’s some concept writing that I’m drafting for it:
“You’re staring again.” Jeff pointed out in annoyance as he put away his guitar in its case.
Eddie glanced at him over his shoulder heedlessly before turning back to watch Chrissy as she took down laundry from her clothesline in the next yard. The rows of pale, pristine linen flapped aggressively against her as the wind picked up, tugging at her hair and skirt. Amalthea moved at her feet, bumping her soft white head against her bare ankles and rubbing herself around and around her legs, desperately wanting attention.
He smiled a little at the cat’s antics.
He knew the feeling.
Chrissy bent down at her soft mewling, sparing the bothersome little lady a few scratches behind her ear before minding her task, her eyes rising briefly to the sky, noting the dark clouds moving in and hurrying her efforts. He took a slight step forward.
Maybe she needed some help.
“Dude, cut it out!”
“Jesus, I’m not even staring!” Eddie snapped back.
“Bullshit…If you keep this up, her creepy ass husband is going to come and skin us in our sleep or something…That dude has the freaking crazy eyes.”
Eddie ignored him as he leaned against the front of the van that he’d parked in the driveway so they could practice in the garage, crossing his arms tightly across his chest.
“Look, I get it… but she’s… off, man…they both are and she obviously doesn't like us, so just leave her alone.” Jeff sighed tiredly. “We really don’t need that kind of trouble.”
“…Aren’t you going to be late?”
Jeff seethed, shoving his shoulder as he passed him. “I’m serious, Eddie.”
“I’m not doing anything! I’m just standing here!” His voice raised to a high incredulous octave causing Chrissy to look nervously over the fence with wide eyes. He and Jeff quickly ducked back deeper into the garage, out of sight. She seemed to remember herself a moment later and got back to clumsily unpinning one of her dresses from the line.
“Yeah right,” Jeff muttered harshly as he moved to open his car door, shaking his head. “I know you. I know that look.”

Getting my notes for the Tyrells in my fic down on paper (or google doc, whatever) since they show up en masse during this chapter, & I am struggling to figure out what exactly Ser Garth (the knight of thorns) & Amalthea (the oldest child/only daughter of the Thorn Hall branch) look like. The problem is I know exactly what the brothers look like (they look like their mommy), & if I can just get pleased with a Ser Garth or Amalthea I feel like the other one will fall into place

Fics I'd want to write but already have too many WIPs to even contemplate adding more to the fucking folder (posting concepts in the hopes they stop haunting me from underneath the floorboards), mostly crossovers:
Fix-it that's just Jedi reading children's books to smol Anakin. It starts when some kind and wise soul lends Obi-Wan The Snow Cat to help him and Anakin talk about grief in the wake of Qui-Gon's death. They help him explore his relationship to prophecy/destiny via The Paper Bag Princess. Room on the Broom to challenge win-lose thinking. Etc. As an adult, he asks Obi-Wan to reread The Velveteen Rabbit with him if he ever gets self-conscious after losing his arm and then we all cry.
Anakin gets therapy but it's inspired by Poe's The Premature Burial, like, they carefully and repeatedly and with plenty of emotional support etc expose him to a simulated reality in which he experiences losing everyone he loves but structured in such a way as to reduce the fear of it rather than make it more frightening, and Anakin thinks his prophecy nightmares of Obi-Wan dying are just (a very ineffective and unpleasant) part of the therapy until he complains and somebody on his care team goes "Wait, what?" which leads to Sidious getting discovered.
The Happy Man's Shirt but make it Vaderwan. Emperor Vader just wants to keep Luke from dying of melancholy, but now he's reluctantly learned a life lesson from a shirtless Obi-Wan and it's making him rethink this whole Sith Empire thing. I'm insane and there's something wrong with me.
Crossover with Were The World Mine (movie). Same age AU with Anakin as Timothy and Obi-Wan in a similar ish role to Jonathan (yes I know Obi-Wan isn't a jock but hear me out), Ahsoka as Frankie and Rex as Max, utter fucking chaos, what Timothy does with the flower is already such an Anakin move tbh
Shakespeare's Tempest but make it Vaderwan, with Vader turning away from the dark side being like Prospero breaking his staff. All about Letting Go(tm). Darth Vader redemption but with so much Force philosophy you'll want to stuff a sock in my mouth.
Crossover w/ The Last Unicorn. Sidious or Dooku as King Haggard, Anakin and Obi-Wan as Molly Grue and Schmendrick or alternatively as Amalthea & Prince Lir, Maul as the Red Bull, honestly *slaps roof* this baby can fit so many reinterpretations/explorations of all our favourite themes in it
Crossover with Celia S. Friedman's Coldfire Trilogy (When True Night Falls, Black Sun Rising, and Crown of Shadows). Listen, are you someone who ever thought it's hypocritical of Christians not to pray for/forgive/empathize with the Devil? Would you go nuts if a fantasy-brand priest homoerotically did exactly that? Okay now what if Anakin was the fantasy-brand Devil (eldritch af) and Obi-Wan risked his own beliefs/moral purity/etc for him, and they were magically connected and intextricably linked, all while the rough equivalent of the Force on their planet was trying to kill them and/or trying to communicate with them (it's complicated)?
Sailor Moon but make it obikin, because we all want to see the horror of Artoo doing Luna's job lmfao.
Crossover with Steph Swainston's Fourlands series (The Year of Our War, No Present Like Time, The Modern World etc). This one would have everything. Obikin with anidala parallels, Anakin making morally objectionable choices, horrifying combat scenes, Star Wars galactic politics meets the weirdest worldbuilding you've ever seen, blasphemy and sacrilege, needless theatrics in the midst of apocalyptic threats, wingfic tropes, idek how else to describe it but we are so missing out.
I'm sure more of these are gonna come smack me upside the head at some point but luckily for all of us I'm only haunted by things I read/watched 5+ years ago and eventually we'll run out of those.

really pleased with how this one works on multiple levels; it's one of those rare delights where I thought of it and then was like "oh NO. unfortunately it's perfect." flirtatious in the present moment, but if you have the contextual knowledge of the circumstances under which Molly does "get her out of uniform" it's a little more ouch :'(
a line from your fic you think could have been better
This human heart beat too quickly for her liking. She was wary of the way the prince spoke to her, too earnest and too hopeful; she did not have the appearance of a unicorn any longer, but he addressed the Lady Amalthea the same way little girls addressed the unicorn. “You have my heart,” he told her one day, but she never felt the weight of a new organ in her chest, and though she listened, there was only one steady too-fast beat between her lungs.
gestures to literally anything written past the "this is recent and therefore I have done the best I can" expiration date. no lol but to be specific, this whole (old) character study piece of the blurring lines between Amalthea and the unicorn I think could have been refined better. this line, for example, has some good ideas at play, but is executed more clumsily than I'd like, looking at it now with the distance of time. but you live and learn!
a line from your fic that makes you want to punch a character
He shifts his voice into a mocking, accented falsetto that sounds nothing like her. “—‘Robaht, I fancy jumping your bones’ would’ve been fine. Maybe try the heads-up next time you find yourself—what, insatiably consumed with lust?—at three in the damn morning.”
when you're collateral damage in someone else's self-harm ;-; this whole scene was mean but it was unfortunately NECESSARY. smacking him about it anyway. both of you! do better!!

Mark knows he’s not poetic, but he is happy.
“I love you,” he says, because he needs to say it, because he wants to keep learning new things like this about her.
The expression that blooms over her face is what he imagines he looked like on the way to the ground with a soccer ball imprint on his forehead. She covers it with an odd little smile, nose scrunching up. “How hard exactly would you say you hit your head?”

Most of the places mentioned in Shalidor’s notes either no longer exist or are long since emptied, by age or by adventurers who don’t know anything about good conservation technique and insist on leaving their own journals all over the place with barely a page or two filled. She imagines whoever is bookbinding for these adventurers must run a surprisingly lucrative business.
this was HARD bc like half of what I write is just inside jokes with myself that would a) take a convoluted explanation and/or b) be embarrassing to explain, but this line (from a wip) I think is a good example of. not that lol. we can all be in on the joke as a treat... Skyrim should have let me read two hundred pages of some random dead guy's mundane life problems/hopes/dreams/grocery lists every time I picked up an abandoned journal
a line from your fic that's shocking
There’s too much to knit together where she can’t see, too much displaced, misaligned; she’d straightened out the spine first to try to help get everything else closer to where it belongs, but Mirabelle had only opened her eyes to spit out a horribly solid chunk of something bloody with an awful gurgling sound and gasp, frighteningly shallow. Lungs. Ribs. The heart at least seems fine for now, and thank Mara for small miracles, but the abdominal cavity, which is disorganized on a good day—she thinks with a sudden fierce passion that she has always hated the abdominal cavity—
shocking mostly bc I can get so squeamish about viscera so I'm delighted to have managed to successfully convey a kind of scary gross moment. I've noticed that people who get easily squicked by injury/illness/etc (such as myself) sometimes tend to overcompensate by overdetailing it when it comes up, but then it loses effect because you're spending so long on it or getting too specific/technical. six paragraphs of someone's intestines falling out, for example, stops being shocking after a certain point. settled on a more concise but I think still effective way of describing it to try avoiding that issue and have been pretty pleased with the results! (side note: this is a great example of "inside jokes with myself" if you know my chronic illness largely affects the contents of the abdominal cavity and doctors are always telling me what horrors go on in there.)
a line from your fic you want to talk about more
It’s always better to be cautious about things that aren’t certain—if she were to allow herself to be a little reductive, she would say that history is nothing but context, and an asyndetic text, even a primary source, requires a degree of speculation that, applied too liberally, can often be worse than useless.
also from above-mentioned wip! I put Kharish through some silly things bc I think she's funny, but I really like writing her in her element where she's more serious too. balancing her academic register and her "normal" register, as it were! autism blast of being smart in a handful of specific areas and then cheerfully and obliviously fumbling interpersonal interactions... :')

Thank you so much for this ask, @thetimemoves! I will stick to Holmesian answers, and starting with the first:
A fic that makes you think #writergoals
The King is in his Counting House by Rhuia (Sherlock/John, Molly/Amalthea, 2.5K, rated T) Quests may not simply be abandoned; prophecies may not be left to rot like unpicked fruit; unicorns may go unrescued for a very long time, but not forever.
This little fusion between BBC Sherlock and The Last Unicorn reminds me of what I aspire to as a writer. I've never really wanted to write novel-length stories, though I very much admire and appreciate those writers who do. At heart I incline to the short story. I love how economy of language, in the right hands, turns lyrical. I like the tone that results from flitting from vignette to vignette, and the way that something so brief can still be funny or haunting or powerful, can trace with a light touch over deep emotion that is all the sweeter for being carefully implied rather than linearly developed.
This particular story combines a lot of things that are dear to me personally. It's a fusion (I adore fusions!) with a fantastical, bittersweet fairy-tale that made a huge impression on me in childhood. It doesn't try to explain the whole story for those readers who don't know the source, it just trusts that those who know the book/film will get the references, and those who don't will be able to pick up the gist well enough not to lose that fairy-tale feeling. It concentrates on creating a tone strong enough to carry people rather than over-explaining or expositing to get everyone up to speed -- sometimes I lack that confidence, and it's good to be reminded that if a story is working for a reader they will be willing to trust you and follow you and accept those things left unexplained. I also enjoy the fact that it's a T-rated story that writes about both sex and romance with just the right touches of playful implication and also heartfelt yearning -- to the extent that I write about those things, too, this is the style I love best. I also admire that this was originally written for a flashfic community, and you can tell -- it feels dashed off, not labored, and although not every line is perfect, it has the energy of a captured dream. Too often I struggle to get things down on the page. I would like to get to the point where I write down more dreams. If I have a glint of a thought, it's good to put it down and see if it grows into something small and personal, like this fic. I also appreciate that even in so short a story, the author included a second pairing that wasn't M/M -- I think many fic writers, myself included, don't take opportunity all that often to do so. Most of all, I love this fic for its language. It has its own voice, its own combination of humor and surrealness and heartbreak and joy.
2. A fic that led to you making friends with the author
Oh man, you know, my internet friendships tend to happen so gradually that I usually can't actually remember how they started :) I just feel like most of the time I've hung out in shared fandom spaces and seen people around and gradually exchanged comments on things and then eventually somehow a tipping point has passed and we're friends now?? LOL! But there are a few where I do remember a particular fic kickstarting that process -- I'm pretty sure it was Sanguinity's beautiful 7PER fic, Particular Debts, that she gave me as a gift for Holmestice years ago, as well as its lovely hurt/comfort companion piece Brandy and Soda, that sort of put us on the path to get to know each other better, though I think we'd seen each other around at Holmestice for years before that. And then when I first started learning how to vid, I felt like we were friendly enough that I could reach out to her and ask for help. Her incredibly generous response where she walked me through a ton of the trickiest bits of getting started, and listened to me whine, and insightfully betaed all my vids for, like, the whole first year running and also every time I asked after that really was, for me, a lovely bonding experience and a seal of friendship :)
I must also shout out to the wonderful Donna_Immaculata, whom I got to know because of her stunning Vetinari/Vimes fic, Bracae Temporis!
3. A fic you’ve re-read several times
You know, I'm not as much of a re-reader as you might expect (I myself am surprised that I don't do it more often) -- perhaps it's because the fics that make the biggest impression on me linger so strongly in my memory that it often feels like I don't need to reread, I just revisit them in my head! However, that being said, in the BBC Sherlock fandom, this is one I've reread repeatedly:
Make Whole What Has Been Smashed by gigantic. (Sherlock/John, 12.5K, rated T). The premise of the story is that for John and everyone else time moves forward as normal, but Sherlock experiences the flow of days backwards, so that John's tomorrows are always his yesterdays and vice versa. It's sad and beautiful and infused with wonder and gratitude. A deeply loving story about making the most of this impermanent life.
And I'll throw in one extra recommendation, just for the heck of it. When going through my bookmarks I was reminded of a series that never did gain much readership but which I consider eminently worthy of attention and rereads: Lindentreeisle's Push!Verse series, a sort of dystopic fantasy in which Sherlock and John have supernatural gifts (Sherlock for tracking, John for healing) and are on the run from the sinister Division seeking to recruit them. The detailed world-building, sharp characterizations, and rather intense action scenes make this an underrated gem, in my opinion. 6 stories in the series, about 30K words -- the series is not marked as complete because it's open-ended, but the main story arc is resolved. I'd love for more folks to discover this one. I think the fact it's gen rather than Johnlock kept it off a lot of people's radars, but it's an excellent little story.
