Awakening posting go

How did you feel about Awakening's major villains, I felt everyone but Walhart was lacking?
Here’s some of my thoughts on the four biggest ones, but for the most part agree with you.
Gangrel- interesting idea for a character, honestly I kinda like villains like him who are unpredictable and just totally unhinged. However, I feel like his motives were lacking. Most of it was chalked up to ‘power hungry and crazy’ which I guess is enough of a motive on its own, but kind of a weak one if you ask me. There is obviously a lot of negative history between Pleiga and Ylisse that could have helped develop Gangrel into a more interesting character but they didn’t really take advantage of it. I give him a 6/10
Walhart- interesting concept for a villain, has strong motives and he’s one of those who you can understand his drives and ever agree with his goals and what he’s trying to do. However I feel the concept could have been executed much better. The whole Valm arc honestly seemed (to me) disjointed from the rest of the story, mostly because I feel like the games justification for WHY Walhart was Chrom’s problem was kind of flimsy. Idk. Just, it felt impersonal. I can’t explain very well why I feel that way, I just do. HOWEVER I’ll rate him 8/10 anyways because its a good concept and his character was decently written. I just didn’t really connect with the storyline and that puts a damper on it for me.
Validar- I hate this dude with a burning passion. He’s slimy. Again, interesting concept but poor execution. He does a bunch of horrible shitty things because…why? He literally had no motive beyond ‘serving Grima’. He would have been so much better as a villain if they had elaborated more on why exactly he was doing what he was doing, and if they did a better job establishing his interest in Robin before the reveal. But mostly my issue here is the total lack of motive. In awakening it just seems like he’s evil for the sake of being evil and that just doesn’t really work for me as a development choice. 4/10
Grima- So. Grima is actually my favorite in the game, and I think he makes a halfway decent sympathetic villain. The issue HERE is that almost everything you learn about Grima that gives him that status…doesn’t come from Awakening. His lore in SoV and FEH do a lot more for his character than anything his own game did, despite the fact he was the big bad. I think it’s obvious as to why that’s odd and not the best choice when establishing a villain. Looking from just an awakening standpoint he’s pretty flat and the only real interest we have in him is his connection to Robin. I think it could have been great if we’d gotten a better look into his lore IN the game he was written for but at least he has some lore and and motive, both of which I personally think it’s pretty good. Going based of just awakening? Only a 5/10. Accounting for all the Lore? 7.5/10

I need a crossover where Alm and Celica are disappointed that Walhart is their descendant because he gets everything so wrong about them and their beliefs.

Hey can you do Walhart cuddling with Robin
(Whaattttt!! First Walhart story ever!)
“Are you uncomfortable?”
“No, not at all. It’s just…an adjustment.”
“You are uncomfortable.”
Walhart’s voice was a much lower volume from where you laid together in bed. Ver, it was not lacking in authoritativeness. In this case, he was deciding for you that trying to snuggle was uncomfortable.
“It’s just….and I mean this in the sweetest way possible….you’re very big. It’s hard trying to figure out what’s a good position that is nice for both of us.”
“You cannot lay your head on my chest? I have seen that is a very common form of contact between spouses.”
“Yes….but if I lay my head on your chest, I’m not able to lay down properly since your chest is a bit, uh, elevated.”
“I see. Then I shall rest my head upon yours!”
“Walhart, you’d smother me with the rest of you in that attempt-” You giggled. His gaze remained unwavering, focused on you in his attempt to calculate how to take care of his wife.
His little wife.
Quite little.
Much smaller than him, even.
Astronomically so.
“If I cannot lay on you, and you cannot lay on me, then….how do you propose we do this?” He wondered aloud.
You sat up beside him in bed, tucking the sheet around your bare chest in an attempt to be polite (he did not see the reason for it; he had already seen and appreciated your naked form moments prior. He did not wish for it to disappear).
“Hmm…” You tapped your chin thoughtfully, analyzing your husband’s body. It was a miracle the two of you could fit on the bed, at all. “Maybe…I get on top of you.”
“What?”
“Yes! Then I won’t have to lie at an awkward angle, and you have full access to me. Plus, it’ll be plenty comfortable for both of us!”
Walhart’s frown deepened, considering the suggestion. You rolled your eyes after seconds of his buffering thoughts passed.
Taking the initiative, you swung your leg over him, straddling him for only a moment.
He enjoyed that moment.
But then you laid down, resting your head squarely in the middle of his chest with a happy sigh.
His arms gently came around you, securing your place.
“Ahh…this is perfect.”
“It is certainly a promising alternative.” He agreed, and you peeked up at him with a lazy smile.
“I like this view. It’s nice having you all to myself, like this….just what I wanted.”
“I h ad nothing to do with this; you have me to yourself because of your own wit. You should be happy with yourself.”
“Oh, trust me, I am.” You laughed, tipping forward just enough to kiss the tip of his nose.
Is brow furrowed.
“That will not do.”
“No?’
You leaned in, meeting his lips.
“....That is more acceptable.”
“I should hope so.”
You remained there for a long while, dozing off in each other’s arms.
It was then decreed by your husband that this was the only proper way to cuddle; anyone who attempted to do otherwise had to be wrong.
Though, you reminded him, to be fair, you were the only one with a titan for a husband, and did not need to resort to cuddling that way.
Walhart did not understand your reasoning.

i feel like that person may have meant 3h is th eonly game that ends with the continent unified into one, but i'd call that more of a general game writing flaw than a character flaw..? like even on AM it feels a bit uncomfy that situations always line up real nice to make sure the continent is one. even in say fe8, frelia/jehanna/rausten are still their own sovereign nations by the end of the game.
I mean, can't that logic also be used for SoV? If AM having the Alliance willingly agree to remerge with the Kingdom and having Dimitri take responsibility for Adrestia is the story "lining up real nice to make sure the continent is one," then wouldn't Alm and Celica marrying and uniting Valentia as one land also be a "nice lining up"? Because you can argue that them marrying didn't have to unite Regel and Zofia, or that they didn't have to marry at all and still be in love. So even if that is what the other nonnie meant I don't really think it applies much here.
And as @archer3-13 points out in their reblog: there have been other instances where the continent is unified under one leader, with Marth and (potentially) Seliph (they also point out the Alm/Celica thing lol). It's just a general thing with FE

Why do so many FE villains feel like wasted potential (or just not needed at all)?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
3 Houses really buried the lead with TWSITD, while Validar and Grima didn't show up as much as they should've (imo) in Awakening but Gangrel and Walhart and Co. felt like they were randomly thrown in. Fates kinda followed in "Awakening" footsteps by underutilizing the main villain, and The Hounds in Engage could've been so much better to me.

What better way to get started than with Fire Emblem's favourite word, dastard, which appears in just about every game, be it officially or unofficially translated? This shot in particular is from the new (fan)translation of FE4, but it was present in the older one as well. Fans often seem to assume it's just a butchering of "bastard" (for ratings reasons) without realising that it is a real word with a real meaning.
( "Implore" is also a possible candidate, and perhaps also "adore" and "undercut" as well if you want to be thorough. )
An Emblematic starting word, indeed!
Fire Emblem's relationship with pejoratives is an interesting one, and while dastard is definitively a distinct word from bastard, I do think there is a relationship between the use of old-timey insults and the need or desire to keep things "Nintendo-friendly." It was rare to see even a damn in the first localized games, and part of the way localization circumvented this was to have the characters use epithets that sounded... well, medieval. Hence your craven!s and your cur!s and, if you're feeling extra spicy, your craven cur!s. I'm actually hard-pressed to recall a usage of dastard in at least FE7 (which was fond of blackheart in similar circumstances); maybe the ESRB thought it was a little too close to the B-word for comfort.
Of course, as the series settled comfortably into a consistent "T for Teen" rating, sensibilities surrounding language loosened up. Awakening was the first game to see characters swearing on a fairly regular basis— up to and including bastard with a B! Yet we still see dastard often enough in modern FE games, which should put to rest the notion that it's merely a euphemism for a more offensive term. They're used differently, and that boils down to both meaning and tone.
(This is where I was initially going to expound on bastard, but just as that section of the post was getting to be too long, an angel of mercy sent an Ask for that very word. So stay tuned, all you beautiful bastards.)
Tumblr media
Kidnapping is, of course, Dastardry 101.
So, what exactly does it mean to be a dastard? Merriam-Webster gives two definitions: 1) “coward,” and 2) “a person who acts treacherously or underhandedly.”
While people do seem to assume dastard as it appears in FE is a willful typo, I’d wager most of you have actually heard its adjectival form: dastardly! Yes, that’s an adjective, not an adverb, despite the -ly ending— same with words like friendly and unsightly.
If the context hasn’t made it clear by now, these words are practically synonymous with villainy. But we’re not just talking any old villain: the key word in the above definitions is underhanded. Dastard carries the sense of cowardice with it because it’s associated with backstabbing, behind-the-scenes scheming, sneak attacks, and just generally dirty tactics. Arguably the most famous “dastard!” in Fire Emblem is directed toward Arvis in Genealogy of the Holy War, and it’s patently well-deserved. And even though Chagall in the asker’s provided screenshot might be projecting juuust a little bit, he actually does well to give us some context clues, as he accuses Eldigan of getting close to his father in order to get one over on Chagall— which, if it were true, would certainly qualify as underhanded. Not as underhanded as murdering your peace-loving king and father, maybe, but who’s to say.
So while modern audiences will sooner associate this word with being a villain than with merely being a coward, it’s important to note that not every villain is a dastard. Your big, strong, honest warlord types— Walhart, for instance— are generally not going to be very dastardly. Neither are your force-of-evil gods and monsters… after all, who needs trickery and deception when you can turn your foes to stone, incinerate them with your breath, or simply eat them? And while yes, dastard and bastard are different words, one commonality you might have noticed is how male-gendered they both are in practice. Nothing whatsoever is stopping a woman from being a dastard, but it’s unlikely she’ll ever be called one.
As for the other words:
Implore basically means beg, though it implies a little more dignity. Rather than falling to your knees, folding your hands, and crying a lot, you need a more strategic and sophisticated approach when imploring. Eldigan’s completely sincere in his desire to put a stop to Chagall’s warmongering, but he doesn’t lower himself upon asking.
Adore means love, especially in a worshipful or fawning way. While it can still be used in an earnest way, it's just as often tinged with condescension, implying disdain for the adorer, the adoree, or both. I’m not sure when adorable came to be synonymous with cute, but I think there’s an intentional hyperbole in that usage that became lost as it became common. Chagall may likewise be hyperbolizing, intent as he is upon framing Eldigan as… well, a manipulative dastard. Having already learned his true feelings toward his father, what's meant to communicate sympathy for the king to Eldigan rings hollow and ironic to the audience.
Undercut as used here means the same as undermine, which is to weaken or make useless via subtle or covert means. It’s all very underhanded… or shall we say, dastardly. Undercut does have more of an association with direct competition or rivalry, though, which gives the sense that part of this may be personal to Chagall.
Well, I think that covers everything! Tune in next time, when we discuss dastard’s edgier, PG-13 cousin. Oh yes, I was serious.

More than that I dread the "villain was right and everything they did was justified" trend that's going to seep into FE. Not just Arvis, but we're probably going to see people try to justify Ashnard, Walhart, Hilda (FE4) and any of the villains that come later who have sad backstories but still commit crimes. It already started with some franchises tbh.
... Honestly, anyone who tries to justify Ashnard out of all the villains of the Fire Emblem franchise has some things to ask themselves. As much as the Tellius games are praised for their writings, I think there is something just deeply hilarious about the fact that they have the least nuanced villain of all time as one of their main villains in the first game.
It's good. I actually love Ashnard. But he's so fucking unrepentant. I wish I could say it's unrealistic but I fear that I can't say it. It's just... how do you even want to justify that.
... And yeah I am now thinking about a future in which we might get Hilda discourse with a FE4 remake and I don't really. I. Hm. The lady is interesting, but she's probably one of those kinda realistic awful (in a way) that I really hope people will not try to justify and argue as right because that would hurt. I think she's great, I like that she is a more "realistic" kind of abusive asshole....
I feel like, up to Edelgard, we mostly avoided people really arguing that the different villains of the gamee are right & justified, but yeah, I do hope that we aren't going to see more people argue that past villains actually were right and justified because in a lot of cases, even when they started from good intentions (Lyon ily but dude. Also. Zelgius. ily but. dude.), there is just... a lot of wrongs done in the name of "right", and often that "right" is more "might" than "right"

Minis FE Awakening Blind Playthrough Chp 11
I'm a bit late but we back! Back to plot and more marriages! And apparently a time skip I suppose. First up: Gank Gangrel in what was the most anticlimactic revenge ever, but Emmeryn's been avenged, so that's already been squared away, woop woop.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First up, suppports marriages. Maribelle and Ricken. Idk they seemed to be around the same age range, so I just went with it. Also Ricken and her interacted in story so that's more than enough inventive for me. Still continuing with the theme of just marrying as opposed to like dating or getting to know each other. It's a miracle any marriage in this game lasts more than a year.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next, Lonqu and Cordelia. Honestly I'm just gonna marry em off bc Lonqu wasn't like, violently sexist to her. He actually was pretty nice and teaches her lance stuff, and he blushes in like their C support, and in a FE support game this is more than enough. They should get married soon.
Tumblr media
Back to plot plot plot. Gangrel is backkkk.
Tumblr media
Typical dumb villain stuff. Shoulda just killed us when we were 10 levels lower. He's so dumb. Uh, anyway, he is being evil and so evil that eventually the mook soldiers realize how evil he blatantly is, so they all leave.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This soldier probably died for saying this lmao
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For some reason the game and plot try to make what Emmeryn did like a super impactful thing, but she literally said one thing about "war is bad" and then chucks herself off a cliff and its portrayed as this super moving and motivational thing? I really don't get it. I've seen people do a lot worse and it not move people, but I guess this is a kid's game so welp welp. Good enough contrivance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I guess it's good enough to make our lives easier.
Tumblr media
We finally get our dancer! Wooop best girl is here by factor of being dancer! Dancer important!
As a reward I'm gonna try to marry her off to Libra idk. I actually haven't checked if he can.
Tumblr media
Gameplay-wise I was a dumbass and didn't see Gangrel's range and he killed Chrom with the leven sword, which I recognize from Smash! Be glad there's image limits bc it cuts out a lot of my stupid deaths because playing as many FE games as I have doesn't stop me from being an idiot. I think that's just a given for my life I think.
Tumblr media
Anyway we win, I try to get some more lvls for Virion, and we finish the Plegia arc! At least that's what I think this arc is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Chrom lampshades that the credits screen didn't show and we have a temporary happily after after where all the hets all get married and have kids asap, which I think is historically accurate to the end of irl wars.
Tumblr media
Actually this does explain why Chrom didn't call himself this. Coulda sworn FEH said differently but I'm actually surprised they explained it, props.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Apparently ppl who play this part blind get jumpscared if they don't know Chrom gets force married here to whoever has the highest support. I knew this thanks to the power of FEH and memes, so I just married him off to first girl.
Tumblr media
TIMESKIP. Chrom asks what his eugenics kid's stats are still looks the same but now he has a kid. Isn't he like 19 now? Did he have the kid at 17? Well I guess medieval times idk. Sumia, Chrom's wife doesn't want to bother mothering and demands to join Chrom in I think the next bad thing to happen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Suma dgaf about the kid it's time to more fight. Who cares about postpartum recovery. Also Lucina's eye automatically denotes her as a main character. The benefits of royal wet nurses I guess.
Tumblr media
The Roommates(tm) have married banter that's more emotional than any interaction between Chrom and his wife, and then we get revealed to the next Bad Thing plot.
Tumblr media
Apparently this place called Valm is attacking us bc some guy named Walhart (?) is being mean and evil, I sure hope his motivations are like 2% more interesting than Gangrel's.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Virion is back and acts like he wasn't part of our army like 2 years ago, and comes with what I think is his retainer, Cherche, whom I recognize from FEH.
Tumblr media
Anyway Viri here says that he was from Valm and came back bc Walhard and wants to help stop before he invades the world or whatever, so I guess that's our next plan!
Agh, I ran out of images again, but anyway Virion is being a weird womanizer so in response I probably will just keep him single, and then I get Donnel & Lissa support, Lonqu & Cordelia, and Virion & Miriel. More supports, more plot!
Conclusion: I think that's the end of Arc I. Gangrel existed to kill of Emmeryn and make Chrom exalt, and I'm guessing this next guy Walhart will probably do something similar? For now I'm focusing mostly on trying to get as many ppl married off as possible, but I'm looking forward to whatever happens next bc I honestly have no idea.
Hasta!
