Book 28 of 2020: Yarn
Yarn by Jon Armstrong
Yarn is described as a "fashionpunk" novel, which made me pretty excited to read it. Set in the futuristic city of Seattlehama, Yarn splits its time between the past and present of fashion designer Tane Cedar as he attempts to find illegal, hallucinogenic Xi yarn to complete a project for a dying former lover. While this occurs in the present, we also follow Tane from his humble origins in the neo-fuedalistic worker villages outside the city and into his first careers in the fashion industry - as well as how he comes to meet and work with this lover to begin with and what he learns about his own past.
I thought the concept of Yarn was super interesting, and I liked the genre style. If felt like a combination of steampunk and fashion, with a hefty dose of hyper-consumerism commentary. The worldbuilding was really interesting, and I thought the way the entire fashion scene was laid out was unique and engaging. I liked the addition of the slum world outside Seattlehama because it added a lot of context and dimension to the universe Armstrong created. I will say, there were a lot of references to people's genitals and the way people have sex in this fashion world; clothing, genitals, and sex were all very closely intertwined. Personally, I found this a little off-putting but others might not. It was tricky to get over at first, but I found it more palatable (still a little gross) as the book continued. I don't know if the obsession with genitals was supposed to make some kind of statement that I just missed, but it wasn't my thing - especially because it seemed to heavily enforce a sex/gender binary. There was one transgender character (I won't say who because it's a bit of a spoiler), but the explanation of her story was sort of strange and she was deadnamed once, as well. It was sort of relevant as a plot point, but I think Armstrong could have achieved the same thing by presenting this detail as less of a reason for this character's behaviors driving the entire plot. It felt almost like villainization of this character because she was the only openly trans character in the book and many of her actions and decisions were extremely questionable. She wasn't officially a villain, but she wasn't not a villain either, and I didn't love that she was the only queer character in the book was painted in this light.
I'm rather torn on this one because I liked the writing and the plot, and most of the characters were interesting and realistic, but the obsession with sex and genitals and the villainization of a trans character don't sit well with me.
Trigger warnings for specific mentions of genitals, non-graphic sex, illness, hallucinogenic drugs, deadnaming and villainization of a trans character, weapons, and a car crash scene.
My final opinion: Interesting plot, weird details.
