What is the way ahead after Farm Laws?

We all know about the repeal of the proposed Farm Laws. Our point of discussion is the way ahead. The MSP for public procurement system has served the country well during the recent Covid-19 crisis as well as earlier food crises. The system is the lifeline of the Farming Community and there is a Public Distribution System (PDS) which serves nearly 80 crore beneficiaries and depend upon supplies from public procurement.  And we cannot rely upon imports to feed the nation. In view of all these MSP needs to be continued for rice and wheat, and, if possible, extend to pulses, sugar canes. At the same time, we appreciate the Income Support to marginal Farmers by Direct Benefit Transfers under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi Program. We were wondering if Direct Benefit Transfers could also be arranged for non staple food crops and linked to their cost of cultivation. It may help to keep the Food Subsidy Bill under control while supporting farmers and encouraging the production of non staple food crops.

Today morning I was doing my ritual festival post of #HappyBaisakhi to all the GreedGoddess readers and I thought I am done with the responsibility of engaging with my readers and wishing them.What stuck me was my first world issues of social media engagement leading to ignorance of real world outside the purview of electronic screens.

For the uninitiated Baisakhi is a spring harvest festival and a special day when Guru Gobind Singhji spread the word of harmony and gave sikhs 5 Banis to listen and read.Baisakhi is a big day for Farmers in Punjab, they rejoice bumper yield of the year and celebrate by thanking almighty.Across villages of Haryana and Punjab people  sing “Jatta aaye Baisakhi” , a day to be remembered and cherished with love, food, and dance.

Not too far away from Punjab, precisely 350 KM in country Capital, Delhi, Tamil Nadu farmers are protesting at Jantar Mantar since last 24 days seeking time from the Prime Minster for a meeting to resolve their financial issues. Last year due the worst northeast monsoon which generally comes between October- December left the South region of India  dry with ground water table dropping majorly, worst in 167 years.

This drought became responsible for sucide of 144 farmers and inspite of farmers struggling for  last few months no relief reached to them by the state government.Finally farmers took route of silent agitation and reached Delhi to demand help from the center.

Between all this on 12th April when farmers were still waiting for their turn to meet PM Narendra Modi  a historical truth made me question the sincerity of being an Indian. Exactly 100 years ago on this date Gandhiji started his first ever Satyagrah with Farmers of Champaran against the taxes levied by the Britishers.

Entire nation stood behind the Sataygrah, people for the first time saw  ray of magical light, hope and energy to fight back.Fight for their own land,Fight for their rights,Fight for being a dignified farmer. People of India came together, few doubted the intention of Gandhi but largely the word was spread about this magical man who is here to bring our nation together. Today we are the same country, we don’t have a Gandhi to bring us together.

But do we still need a Gandhi to help us unite against the odds?

As a nation have we become self centered and we decide to choose our own cause to support, rather then backing people who provide us our food.

They are the real heroes who are struggling to sustain basic livelihood, struggling to sow their farm, struggling to breath and survive. While they are in pain we shouldn't be celebrating Pongal or Baisakhi. We need to be with them in their time of crisis, they should know we exit for them and because of them.
