Léo wanted to scream as he walked down the dirt path that lead to his house. He was such an idiot. And he was about to be in a shit load of trouble if he didn’t think fast. Upon entering his house, Léo grabbed his workout duffel bag and emptied it unceremoniously onto the floor before turning it into an overnight bag. A change of clothes, some toiletries, and a few other essentials were tossed in.
He collapsed onto his couch after the bag was packed and picked up his phone. Dialing quickly, he put his phone up to his ear.
“Hey, Emma? Yeah…some serious shit just went down over here. I…can I come down to Zuzu for the night? I think Miss Lowe is going to fucking fire me,” Léo said to his friend. A few quick words were exchanged, and the tired farmhand was officially going to the big city to escape his small town problems.
He had really messed it up this time.
There was a guy in town, you see. A hot punk skateboarder whose blonde dye job was slightly grown out. He was the human embodiment of sunshine and agh, Léo had fallen head over heels for him. It seemed, however, that Léo was the only one in all of Pelican Town who hadn’t gotten the memo that Sam was dating the local farmer Piper. Piper as in, Piper Lowe. As in Miss Lowe. As in his goddamn boss. And he had just kissed his boss’ boyfriend!
Léo knew that she was going to be pissed with him. She had hired him recently to help take care of the animals. He had been raised on a ranch, and when he saw an ad looking for help with farm animals, Léo had jumped at the chance. His life in Zuzu city had been going nowhere, and living in a small town sound perfect. Miss Lowe was the perfect boss. Er, Piper was the perfect boss. The poor woman had been trying to get it through Léo’s skull that he should just use her first name and not her last.
“I’m 26,” she said, rolling her rose colored eyes. She always had those pink contacts in, which had been slightly unnerving at first. Honestly, it added to the idea that perhaps Léo should be calling her by a more casual title. “Calling me Miss Lowe…it either makes me sound like some old hag or like a dominatrix.”
His honey brown eyes fluttered shut and he sighed dramatically. Honestly, he should probably just leave. But that would mean talking to Piper about what happened. Whatever, it was going to happen anyway, and he’d rather quit on his own terms rather than be fired.

Léo cracked his eyes open and looked at his phone. Someone had just sent him three texts. He opened the first one.

Piper’s nickname for him was potato chip. It had been ever since he had his first interview with her.
“Wait, it’s not lee-oh? It’s lay-oh?” Piper had said during their interview. “Lay…like Lay’s Chips! You’re a potato chip!”
Léo had just blinked at her, and she had giggled, immediately proclaiming that he was hired.
And now she was texting him? After…after…
Sammy told me what happened. I’m not mad! I promise!

Léo stared at her silly version of “cross my heart,” head spinning. She wasn’t mad? No…that wasn’t possible. How could she not be? He had practically crawled into Sam’s lap and kissed him. And the worst part was…
Sam had kissed back.
Léo was pretty sure Sam would leave that out, but it was fine. It hadn’t been true reciprocation. When Léo’s lips pressed against Sam’s, the blonde boy’s lips had moved too, returning the pressure. Of course, Sam had come to his senses, and shoved Léo off.
“Sorry man I’ve got a girl,” Sam had said, looking anywhere but him. “I mean, I’m flattered but I’m dating Piper and–”
“Oh,” Léo had said, getting up quickly. “Sorry. I…sorry,” And with that he had practically ran away back to his house near the barn, horrified at what had just transpired.
Léo sighed and tapped out a response.

Léo jumped at the sudden banging on his front door.
“Oops!”
It was Piper.
The knock that came next was a little bit lighter. It was short and cheerful. Léo squeezed his eyes shut. Maybe if he stayed super super still, closed his eyes, and pretended not to exist, Piper would go away.
“Léo!”
No such luck.
“C’mon potato chip, open up!” Piper whined. “I saw your super emo message saying that I should be mad at you. Come on, let’s just talk!”
“I can hear you Miss Lowe, and I really just want to be alone!” Léo shouted, loud enough for her to hear. He winced as he heard the unmistakable sound of a boot slamming against his front door.
“Don’t Miss Lowe me, Mister Calavera-Cienfuegos,” she snapped. “It’s Piper! P-I-P-E-R! And you’d better open up this door before I kick it in!”
Léo groaned and got up. If she kicked it in now, that would be 4th time two weeks she had done so. And each time, he had to fix it because he was the root cause. Sure he was planning on leaving, but he wasn’t going to leave the door hanging from its hinges.
Trying not to heave a sigh and drag his feet like a dramatic teen, Léo made his way over to the door. He slowly opened it, revealing a short angry blond woman, pink eyes narrowed. Her hair had been expertly styled in two intentionally messy pig tails, and her baggy pink sweater and black miniskirt were neat as a pin. She had either changed out of her farming clothes or she hadn’t done anything at all.
It was probably the latter. Léo did the majority of the work on the farm, but she paid him handsomely so he didn’t really mind. Piper just wasn’t cut out for farm work, and from what Léo understood, had been tossed into this position to “continue on the family legacy” or some bullshit like that.
“I’m coming in,” she said, and pushed past Léo before he could say a word. He let out a frustrated huff, and closed the door a little harder than normal. Piper turned around, but before she could speak, Léo interrupted.
“Look, I…I’m sorry. About kissing Sam. I’m glad you two are together, really. He’s great, you’re great. I just think that I…look, I know this guy name Ricky. He works on my Dad’s ranch, and I think he’d be a perfect fit here on–”
“Léo wait, hold on,” Piper said, furrowing her brow. “That sounds like “I’m about to leave you forever” kind of talk. Saying that another person would be a perfect fit. You know I can’t afford two farmhands. Why would you leave?”
“Because of what just happened!” Léo said, exasperated.
"I said it was okay though! I don't care that you kissed him, I'm not mad!" Piper said, her jewel tone eyes pleading with Léo. He sighed and shook his head.
"Piper, I...look, I need to leave. This is my two weeks, okay? I'm going back to the city. I can't do this. I know it's selfish and I'm sorry. I just can't be around Sam. Not when..." Léo sighed. "You'll find someone better than me."
"WAIT!" Piper shouted as Léo swung his duffel bag over his shoulder. "Would you stay if I said I would share?"
"What?" Léo asked, frowning.
"Sam. I could share him with you! Only when I'm there though, but like...still. I could share! Would you stay then?"
“Share?” Léo said, eyebrows shooting up. “What does that mean?”
“I think you damn well know,” Piper said. “Look…it’s not like Sam doesn’t want it. When he told me what happened he was freaking out. Freaking out because he liked it.”
Léo blinked. “What?” he asked, not sure he had heard right.
“Sam liked you kissing him. He felt like the thoughts he was having while you kissed him were unfaithful, especially because he kept thinking about how good the kiss had been after you left. So…sharing him might be fun, you know?” Piper said, a glint in her eye. “But only if I’m there.”
“Piper I don’t want to see you naked,” Léo said bluntly, and Piper laughed.
“Why, because I’m your boss?” she teased.
“No. I mean yeah, but mostly because I don’t have a heterosexual bone in my body and—do not make that face!” he said, glaring at Piper.
“Oh come on, using the word “bone” is just asking for a dick joke to be made,” Piper pouted. “Look, I asked Sam if he’d want to mess around with you if I was cool with it. He said yes. So…if you’re down for a no strings attached type situation with Sam…”
Léo bit his lip. Was he? He had an actual crush on Sam. Before the kiss, he had wanted to date Sam, not just get into his pants. Would he be okay with a friends with benefits situation?

“I think…I think I could do that,” Léo said, and Piper clapped her hands in excitement.
“Yay!” she cheered. “You’re staying!”

The rest of the day flew by, and before he knew it, Léo was in the main farmhouse, Sam’s fingers running over his abs.

Léo pulled Sam back in for a real kiss this time, and he felt more than heard Sam moan into his mouth. Their soft, unsure kisses soon turned heated, and Léo made quick work of taking Sam’s shirt off.
“You look pretty good yourself,” Léo said in a rumbling tone. Sam flushed, and Léo pushed him back down against the bed, rougher than intended. A pleased sound came from over where Piper was, and Léo couldn’t help but feel excited that she was enjoying the show. He might not be attracted to her, but he found himself wanting her to like what she saw.
Léo settled in between Sam’s legs, smiling at the large tent in the blonde man’s jeans. He went to unzip Sam’s pants, paused, and then looked up.
“Watch me,” he said in a deep voice, layered in honey. Sam let out a needy whine as the two locked eyes.
“Holy fuck,” Sam said, eyes wide, as Léo undid his button and then pulled down his zipper with his teeth. The two worked together to shed Sam of the rest of his clothes, and Léo returned to his spot. He knew that Sam was expecting him to get straight to the point, but he had other ideas.

Il s'agit de la compilation des 12 chapitres de Carburo-Berger parus dans la revue Next Revel's Comics Machine.
Alexandre est berger. Il vit dans les Landes Rocheuses auprès de son chien César et de son troupeau de carburo-bestiaux, créatures élevées pour leur suc énergétique. Presque toujours seul, il tue le temps en lisant, en marchant, en taillant des morceaux de bois ou encore en dialoguant avec ses bêtes. Cette vie isolée l’amène à songer à son rôle d’éleveur, à l’opposition entre sauvagerie et domestication et à la condition de bétail des animaux sous sa surveillance.
Cette histoire se déroule dans le même univers que le fanzine «Gaulois-Technos et Carburo-Bestiaux» paru en 2018. Celui-ci dépeignait le fonctionnement d’un village qui exploite les carburo-bestiaux de manière intensive et industrielle. «Carburo-Berger» vient apporter un point de vue différent en mettant en scène un paysan proche de ses bêtes, un élevage plus petit et un environnement isolé en pleine nature.
This is the compilation of the 12 chapters of Carburo-Berger published in the magazine Next Revel's Comics Machine.
Alexander is a shepherd. He lives in the Rocky Landes with his dog César and his herd of carburo-beasts, creatures bred for their energy juice. Almost always alone, he kills time by reading, walking, cutting pieces of wood or talking to his animals. This isolated life leads him to think about his role as a breeder, the opposition between savagery and domestication and the livestock condition of the animals under his supervision.
This story takes place in the same universe as the fanzine “Gaulois-Technos et Carburo-Bestiaux” published in 2018. This depicted the functioning of a village which exploits carburo-bestiaux in an intensive and industrial way. "Carburo-Berger" comes to bring a different point of view by staging a farmer close to his animals, a smaller livestock and an isolated environment in the middle of nature.

Feature: 2017: Third Quarter Favorites
As we stumble into the final quarter of the year, TMT would like to temper the political incoherence and informational carelessness of the last few months with another transmission from our trusty quarter-list propaganda machine. And you, dear reader, are invited! Whether it was transcendental smackdowns (Young Thug) or moonlit ruminations (The National), unlistenable prayers (Lingua Ignota) or symbol play (Giant Claw), 2017’s summer sounds found our bodies trembling (Pan Diajing), swiped like a shoe along concrete ($3.33), and glowing with deceitful charm (White Poppy). It didn’t matter if it was coming from the Dar Es Salaam underground (Nyege Nyege Tapes), a modded 70s Speak & Spell (White Suns), or Jack Rabbit’s Palace (Twin Peaks); it didn’t matter if it was evinced by lurker auteurs (Nmesh), sonic ecologists (Avey Tare), or one Pretty Bitch (Lil B). In the face of an ever-increasing shitshow, the last three months of music carried on like if often does: with a mix of hope, absurdity, and some exquisite world-building, with hearts both heavy (death’s dynamic shroud) and gentle (Mark Templeton). Shortlist: Yves Tumor’s Experiencing The Deposit Of Faith, Nate Scheible’s Fairfax, Tzusing’s 東方不敗, Jay Glass Dubs’s Glacial Dancehall, Shabazz Palaces’s Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines, HKE’s HEEL AESTHETIC, Windy & Carl’s Blues For A UFO, Shabazz Palaces’s Quazarz vs. The Jealous Machines, woopheadclrms’s Meeting Room + Rare Plants (Ukiuki Atama), Youngboy Never Broke Again’s AI YoungBoy, Costanza’s George, Mount Kimbie’s Love What Survives, Femminielli Noir’s Echec & Mat, I am just a Pupil’s CRYSTAL PAIN, Léo Hoffsaes & Loto Retina’s Early Contact, Arve Henrikson’s Towards Language, Schneider Kacirek’s Radius Walk, S.W.’s The Album, Damien Dubrovnik’s Great Many Arrows, Alan Vega’s IT, chris†††’s social justice whatever, and Ariel Pink’s Dedicated to Bobby Jameson. --- Nmesh Pharma [Orange Milk] [WATCH · LISTEN · REVIEW] With Pharma, lurker auteur Nmesh has both legitimized and destroyed the vapor-non-genre, virus-like, from within. Now entombed in some lo-poly pyramid, we can see the ‘wave for what it was: a dig through the garbage-dump archives of the 1990s to recover, warp, and recontextualize whatever memories got lost beneath the pile. The samples and annotations would be nothing, though, without the music, and lucky for you Pharma delivered well on this front. Not only is this Nmesh’s best album to date, but these 26 tracks (plus many remixes) ran rings around an entire micro-era of electronic music, wearing it out until the soul within was revealed. Plus, how brazen is that Ferris Bueller sample? –Dylan Pasture --- Pan Daijing Lack [PAN] [LISTEN · REVIEW] Abstract music, even “noise” if you want, is too often discussed in relation to absence. Absence of harmony, of “form,” of the philosophy of separation underpinning musical tradition per se. I imagine that, in witnessing a performance by Pan Daijing, who discusses her music along the lines of embodiment and the “acting out” of sound, it becomes difficult to persist in this manner of speaking. With Lack, a document of that performance practice, she rattles the consciousness of the home listener from its critical distance back to where it belongs: the wanting, lurid presence of the body. “Practice of Hygiene” breaks words — “above, below,” “excuse me,” “why do I have to” — into moaning, groaning, and almost-human creaking, cradled in the bleed of a low, repeating piano note. A dissonant arpeggio dances for five minutes across “The Nerve Meter,” a synthesized pattern that seems to shake the receiver as if having passed through air from a nearby amplifier. At the climactic moment of “Lucid Morto,” the final track, delayed vocals combine with the unsure, three-note melody of a meaty trance lead. In different and captivating ways, this album takes advantage of the notion that sound is a physical encounter; its Lack is not of form or substance, but the one that lives in all of our hungering, trembling bodies. –Will Neibergall --- Milo who told you to think??!!?!?!?! [Ruby Yacht/Alpha Pup] [LISTEN · REVIEW] “Ghiath Matar is dead, roses are not armor,” goes the first rapped line, and if you’ve fallen into the trap of thinking that Milo’s strictly a “college rapper,” you might also be assuming that Ghiath Matar is the name of some ancient Eastern deity or the protag of a Russian fantasy novel. But it’s not. He was, I know now, a Syrian activist who gave flowers to soldiers, then was arrested, tortured and killed. The next line goes, “In my neighborhood, it was become a poet or a farmer.” Writing amazing, beautiful, weighty verse is part of Milo’s job, as is performing. But geeky flights of fancy aren’t gone, they’re just getting pointier. Also in the first song, he says, “Hold the self like J’Zargo in Winterhold,” referring, of course, to the fictional cat wizard and mage college in Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. Did I mention this is the album’s first verse? It goes deeper still, metaphors atop one another like racks. I haven’t cracked the seal on my vinyl copy yet, because it looks so snug sitting in its shrinkwrap beside Down With People’s self-titled album. One more unsolicited thought: if Nostrum Grocers ever drops, there are going to be a lot of professional poets out there burning their own chapbooks. –Samuel Diamond --- Avey Tare Eucalyptus [Domino] [LISTEN · REVIEW] Ever since Campfire Songs, we’ve known that Avey Tare is a sonic ecologist, attuned to the environments and relationalities that bloom and burble through his terraformed recordings. Lately, though, his work has dripped somewhere Down There, somewhere murky and suffocating, goopy and fecund. But, aerated and sun-drenched afresh in the Eucalyptus, Avey Tare sounds like he can breathe again. Awash but not overwhelmed, the atmospheres that populate Eucalyptus oxygenate the expansive melodies Portner has always nursed — from “Chocolate Girl” to “Amanita” — only this time, they can photosynthesize something delectable out of the coral, salt, soil, air that have always permeated, always tickled, always snickered. There’s a spaciousness in the hebetic sonic environments here, room to snuggle and inhale. Like the calyx that protects the budding eucalyptus flower, Eucalyptus chaperones us into a nourishing amnion. We can’t help but curl up and sink in. –Benjamin Eckman Bieser --- Various Artists Twin Peaks (Music from the Limited Event Series) / Twin Peaks (Limited Even Series Soundtrack) [Rhino] [WATCH · WATCH · WATCH] IRRATIONALLY ESSENTIAL. There’s no other way to put it. For Twin Peaks fans, this was the Summer of Frost/Lynch. We watched, listened, pondered, argued; we breathed it, ate it, shit it, and then sniffed the shit for more clues. By the time the 18-part series that first infected us back in May fully metastasized at the beginning of September, we were zombies. Our gray matter was hollowed into cheese by Dougie-Cooper’s Disease, characterized by the frenetic drive to bathe ourselves in anything connected with the story in any way — e.g., these two albums, featuring Angelo Badalamenti’s iconically eerie scores, plot-pregnant songs from each of the show’s Roadhouse bands, and a few of Lynch’s maniacal manipulations. Even now with the series in the spooky, Lynchian rear-view, the obsession lingers. The past dictates the future. There’s no going back. –Dan Smart [pagebreak] SADAF SHELL [Outside Insight] [LISTEN · REVIEW] An album gets called cinematic when the music elicits the feeling of a wide shot, of a soundtracked scene, of prestigious drama. SHELL is cinematic because it’s a movie. Vestigial, footgazing, inflammable, SHELL is a movie with no stars, a movie with no film, that unfolds in unfolding, getting ahead of itself. Even the pronoun is in the can before she means to. So you hear SADAF: just trust your eyes. Audition requires participation, and here, off the top of her head, participation means filmmaking. The unmaking of, in stereo. Although there are no bangers, there’s still the magic of SADAF’s multiplying VOICE, playing over scripts. (Little fires, drowning onscreen, disowned from the spark that lit the faucet. Its instructions crossing themselves out, the skipping noise and scraping strings roll like credits, hand in hand, like the tide, a substitute for reaching through to the other side.) “Though there is stillness, I can feel your heartbeat. Though I can’t see you, I can hear a sound.” Fear that you hear yourself, but you don’t listen. –Pat Beane --- Various Artists Sounds of Sisso [Nyege Nyege Tapes] [LISTEN] It’s fair to say that Uganda’s Nyege Nyege Tapes has left a rather sizeable imprint on the TMT hivemind this year (see: Otim Alpha, Mysterians, and first-quarter fave Riddlore http://j.mp/2g2GAt3

A One-Eyed Québécois ‘Rambo’ Captures Imaginations in Canada

MONTREAL--It is a plot worthy of Hollywood: A courageous, one-eyed soldier single-handedly liberates a Dutch city during World War II, tricking a German officer into believing the city is surrounded.
Just in case there are any doubters, he rampages through the streets throwing grenades, firing his rifle and--in a final act of defiance--lights the Gestapo headquarters on fire.
Now more than 70 years later, the soldier, Léo Major, a one-time farmer from Montreal, is getting wide recognition in Canada after an hourlong documentary about his life was shown last month on Radio-Canada, the national broadcaster. The news media dubbed him “Quebec’s Rambo.”
He is also the subject of a feature film and a biography set to be published in February.
“What Léo did is larger-than-life and sounds like something even greater than an action movie. But until now, few Canadians knew who he was,” said Bruno DesRosiers, director of the documentary, “The One-Eyed Ghost.”
It probably didn’t help that Mr. Major was a reluctant war hero and hothead who had recklessly disobeyed orders, according to Luc Lépine, a military historian who is writing Mr. Major’s biography, “Léo Major: A Resilient Hero.”
Mr. Major, the first born of 13 children, was a restless 19-year-old when he volunteered to join the Canadian army in the summer of 1940. It was a time when the economic prospects for a young, poor French Québécois in Anglo-dominated Canada were severely circumscribed.
One of his sons, Denis, said his father, a skinny and scrappy boxer and aspiring plumber, was drawn by the prospect of liberating Europe from fascism as well as a quest for adventure.
In June 1944, after training in reconnaissance, Mr. Major, by then a sniper in the army, lost sight in his left eye. A German had thrown a grenade at him a few weeks after D-Day while his unit was helping to liberate the town of Carpiquet in Normandy, France. He wore a patch for the remainder of the war, his son recalled.
Later, during a mission on the German-Dutch border to rescue missing British soldiers, his truck went over a land mine, launching him 50 feet in the air and breaking his arm, three vertebrae and two ankles. Undeterred, he rejoined his unit after escaping from a hospital in Belgium to visit his girlfriend.
“‘I was a sniper. I still had one good eye and could still shoot,’” Denis Major recalled his father saying.
Mr. Major’s daring wartime actions were corroborated by Mr. Lépine, his biographer, using Canadian army records, Mr. Major’s own accounts and interviews with former members of his unit and his family.
During the Battle of Scheldt in the Netherlands in October 1944, the First Canadian Army was assigned the treacherous task of clearing Nazi troops to allow Allied supplies to get to the port of Antwerp. Mr. Major swam through canals, undetected, before killing two sentinels at a German army camp.
He then ambushed the commanding officer, who was sleeping. Unsatisfied with that, he single-handedly captured 93 German soldiers, also slumbering in a nearby barracks. Faced with so many captives on his own, he called in two Canadian tanks, and marched the men toward Canadian forces, according to Mr. Lépine, the military historian.
The documentary recounts Mr. Major’s role in the liberation of Zwolle, a picturesque Dutch city with a population of about 50,000 at the time.
After sunset on April 13, 1945, Mr. Major and another soldier, Willie Arsenault, sneaked into the German-held town on a reconnaissance mission, according to military records. It was just weeks before the war was to end. The area was swarming with German soldiers, and Mr. Arsenault, Mr. Major’s close friend, was killed by the Nazis. Incensed, Mr. Major gunned down the two Germans who had killed his friend.
He then walked into the German officer quarters where he persuaded a senior officer who spoke French that the village was surrounded by Canadian soldiers. He told him to tell his fellow officers to evacuate immediately--or face being captured when the town fell. As a sign of good faith, he let the German keep his gun.
Mr. Major then proceeded to charge through the town to simulate a siege from an encroaching army. With the aide of Dutch resistance officers, he captured more than 50 German soldiers. Other Germans fled, and the town was liberated.
“Major was a loose cannon, a skinny kid from the wrong side of the tracks who wasn’t afraid of anything,” Mr. Lépine said, explaining his sometimes foolhardy bravery.
Mr. Major stayed in the Canadian army and was awarded a medal for bravery during the Korean War after capturing a strategic hill despite being vastly outnumbered by Chinese forces.
He returned to Montreal at age 33, hampered by so many painful war injuries that he couldn’t work. He lived off a veteran’s pension. He passed his time listening to James Brown, sewing clothes and seldom talking about the past--or what he had done, his son said.
Mr. Major said he remained haunted from having killed teenagers as a sniper, and he broke down while watching World War II dramas. He died in Montreal in 2008 at age 87. A Dutch colonel attended his funeral.
His story would still perhaps be unknown, Mr. Major said, were it not for several residents of Zwolle who knocked on his door in Montreal in 1969 to ask him to participate in a ceremony commemorating the town’s liberation from the Nazis. It was only then that his wife and four children learned the truth about their father’s wartime actions.
Today, there is a street named after Mr. Major in Zwolle and an annual ceremony to honor him. Late last month a group of Dutch soccer fans in Zwolle unfurled a banner showing him as a young soldier with an eye patch. Those who knew Mr. Major said he wouldn’t have liked all the fuss.
“If he were American, there would’ve been a dozen films about him by now,” Denis Major said, adding: “My father was an ordinary man who did extraordinary things.”
