WIP teaser

I got myself a lovely little request over a week ago for a Nurse!xBuck fic. Well, hi, it’s me, can’t not take that and run with it straight off the edge of the known world. I don’t even have a fixed name for it yet but I’ve been enjoying AU-ing our familiar faves to death with it

MOTA Pacific Theatre AU: yeah, you heard that right. Maybe it’s the anniversary of Iwo Jima currently happening or maybe it’s my ongoing crush on Ensign Jane Kendeigh, or -more likely- my subconscious awareness that nurse OC’s are a pretty favorited bunch for fandom writers, so I’ve found myself mixing it up entirely.

We’ve got Navy Flight Nurses and we’ve got Lt. Commander Doc Egan and co-pilots Cleven and Demarco who aren’t too fond of having to fly cargo planes full of wounded out of war zones all due to flight surgeon John Egan’s special request to have Cleven chauffeur him around. Oh yeah, and somehere in here there’s a developing thing between Cleven x oc Nurse!Ensign Maureen Kendeigh

“You got it, commander.”

More than a little sure her mission was more provoking than necessary, Maureen still obeyed and followed Brady up the length of the plane and towards his station, then past it to poke her head between the pilots’ seats.

“Well, well, this is a pleasant surprise, getting car sick, kiddo?” Demarco joked, “Hey, I get it, I’d find it hell back there with no windows to look out.”

“Those mortars obligingly made a few.” Maureen joked back.

“Anybody hurt?” Cleven asked, and to her surprise, he turned from his panel to look at her with unmasked concern.

A joke was ready made there about everyone quite literally being shot to hell but she sensed he’d not appreciate it and following some uninterpreted impulse of desiring his good opinion, she hardly wished to repay his earnestness with flippancy. “Only one.”

“How bad?”

“He looked -dead.” Maureen admitted, she hadn’t gotten a good look at the man moving past him but she’d seen Egan’s treatment of the body and it wasn’t promising.

Cleven’s jaw worked overtime at the news and something snapped in his mouth, followed by a soft curse from lips too full and soft to always be so stern. Maureen thought he may have broken a tooth with all that tension but he spit out two halves of a bloodied toothpick instead. It fell to his pant leg.

“Major Cleven, sir, you’re bleeding.” It had drawn Maureen’s attention to his wet lap.

“That’s what I said.” Demarco agreed.

“It’s somebody else’s.” Cleven shook his head.

“You know if you pass out on me-“ Demarco warned, completely ignoring Cleven’s denial.

“-that’s why we’ve got co-pilots.” Cleven finished for him with a maddening smirk that made Benny Demarco throw his hands up.

“Can you check him?” he asked, “I mean -you are a nurse!”

“What? Hell no!” Major Cleven spooked for the first time all day at the suggestion, glancing quickly from his reddened trousers, behind him to Maureen Kendeigh, and back again. “I’m fine.” he declared in a firm tone that dettered her almost as much as the challenge of getting over the instruments and a steering column to pull down his pants and look. “Ensign Kendeigh, was there a purpose to your visit?” He redirected, resolutely ignoring Demarco’s unabated concerns.

“Yes sir,” she replied, meekly as she could, “Doc Egan asked me to remind you that you’re not flying a bomber. To mind the oxygen, sir. And that it’s cold.”

Cleven let out a mirthless little laugh. “We’re full of holes Ensign, of course it’s cold.”

“I know sir.”

“Yeah, ‘course you know,” his eyes lightened for a moment and Maureen almost deluded herself he was being chummy when he murmured next, “you’re smart like that. Tell the Lieutenant Commander I’ll keep her nice and low, so low the Jap navy gunners can blow the floor out without a sweat.”

“Thank you, Major.” Maureen chirped, pleased to have been trusted with a bit of morbid humor -it was the truest test of being taken seriously a woman could hope for in the service.

“Thank you, Ensign.” And with that she was dismissed.

a/n: hi! This is the first fanfic i've written for this fandom. An avid fanfic reader and marvel fanatic but I haven't written anything like this so...bare that in mind. I posted an idea idea for a Wandanat x reader fic where during an intel mission, the couple find you, a hydra prisoner left behind. After rescuing you and moving you into the compound, feelings between you and the couple emerge. However, considering the age gap (Legal, r is 21,) your past, and the circumstances in which you met, the two redheads are hesitant to start anything. will be kind of a slow burn, hella angst but ofc some fluff and (probably badly written) smut throughout. but this is the first chapter! any comments/feedback/ improvements are welcomed in the comments. What they found Ch1

‘The parameters are clear, Mr Smash is currently clearing the rest of the guards. Romanoff, you sweep the first floor, Witchy can you cover upstairs?’ Tony calls through the comms, flying around the outside of the castle-like walls of the latest Hydra base being taken down.

‘Got it Stark, Natty be caref- I mean Natasha, A-agent Romanoff’

There are several chuckles heard through the earpiece before Clint breaks the tension ‘Easy, Red. You and our dear assassin here have been sharing a bedroom long enough, you don’t need to hide your cutesy nicknames from us’

‘Yeah as long as you’re not opposed to us teasing you about it’ Tony finishes off, landing on the top floor of the building.

’That’s enough you two. Any more teasing and you’re both gonna be on the receiving end of my widow bites once we get back to the quinjet. Wanda just ignore them…Wands?’

Natasha repeats after receiving no response from her girlfriend within a few minutes. Natasha takes this as a cue to start making her way up the stairs towards the floor Wanda was supposed to be on, figuring her beloved witch was distracted by a few stray guards.

Wanda, however, was currently facing a… less threatening but undeniably more daunting situation than Hydra agents. Her palms clenched to prevent any more red mist escaping them, as she took tentative steps towards a seemingly empty cell.

She could hear soft, almost inaudible pants coming from the corner, as she took a step closer, a small, hunched figure twitched slightly, pressing themselves against the wall of the cell. Wanda took this as her cue to crouch down to her knees, taking on a more relaxed approach.

As she shuffled closer, she noticed a small, pale frame draped in a tight but battered suit, hair covering their face. The figure almost looked like a child, but looking at the frame and curves, she had to assume it was a small adult.

‘H-hey…I didn’t mean to startle you. My names Wanda…I-im here to, to help?’

There is a drawn silence as the figure sits up slightly, back resting against the wall with a pained huff.

‘Are you? You don’t seem too sure about that…’ Teased the voice. A woman.

Wanda looked up slightly, seeing blue eyes peering at her through a curtain of floppy hair covered in gravel and a red tint that Wanda was praying wasn’t blood but…didn’t want to think about it too long.

‘Yes.’ Wanda finally found her voice, speaking more confidently. ‘I’m here to help you, we just thought this building no longer held…prisoners.’ She trailed off at the last part.

‘What happened to baldy and face tat?’ The voice asks in a husky tone, reaching a bloodied arm up to her face to rub some grime from the side of her face.

At Wanda’s bewildered expression the woman continues

‘The guards…it was always the same two. Never gave names so I made my own.’

‘O-oh they uhm…took a long walk off a short…hillside’ The witch responded, wringing her hands together.

This earned a slight snicker from the woman in the cell.

‘So it’s true then. You’re one of those revengers Strucker has been yammering about?’

The Witch returned a slight nod ‘Well… A-venger, but, yes, I am, we actual-‘

‘Wanda! For christ sakes I’ve been yelling your name through the comms for the last ten minutes, you know how many stairs I had to climb just to find you sitting here!’ A gravelly voice called from down the hallway. Wanda immediately recognised the teasing reprimand from her girlfriend and turned to greet her, as she did, the figure suddenly shrunk into the far corner of the cell, away from the harsh voice she could hear approaching.

Just as Natasha reached her girlfriend and the entrance to the cell, Wanda held out a hand to her chest, pausing her movements ‘Natasha…lower your voice’ She whispered as she glanced to the growing ball of nervousness currently hunched in the corner.

Natasha’s expression became confused as she followed the line of sight into the cell and frowned ‘b-but stark said this place no longer held captives, that we just needed to grab left over intel and leave.’ The spy whispered as she peered further into the cell’

‘A young woman…seemed familiar with the place enough to suggest she’s been here for a while. I was just introducing myself when you found me, she’s not hostile’ The witch confirmed as she looked back at the woman who was now eyeing Natasha with an unreadable expression, her mouth slightly agape.

‘You’re, the black widow…’ she whispered as she leant forward slightly, just within an arms’ length of the couple.

Natasha tentatively nodded, undecided as to whether it was a good or bad thing that the woman knew her name.

‘I am, but I prefer Natasha when I’m not fighting, and you are…’ She asked with a softer tone than the one she had entered with, taking Wanda’s hand in hers and squeezing it gently, only now processing her relief that the witch wasn’t in danger like she had originally thought.

‘Y/n, but you can call me 308 if you like, that’s all I’ve been referred to for as long as I can remember’ You reply, looking down at the metal cuffs gripping your wrists, you originally had a badge with your number on it sewn into your suit but, it had worn off eventually.

‘Y/n is fine with us… we don’t believe in referring to living people as numbers.’ Wanda replied, offering Nat a knowing look before returning her attention back to you. ‘And how old are you?’ she probed further, taking the chance to get as much information as you were willing to give them.

‘What year is it?’

‘2024’ one of them responded, though you weren’t sure which as your eyes were focussed on the ground in front of you’

‘Well they brought me here in 2019, I was 15 so…I guess that means I’m 21’ You reply nonchalantly, when they don’t say anything in response, you add on ‘they mention your age a lot at first, for updating their files. Once you have your ID number, I guess no other digits are important anymore.’

‘Well, they’re important to us’ Wanda starts before pausing, lifting a hand to the earpiece nestled beneath strands of auburn hair, listening intently for a moment before looking back to you ‘And our team is here also, we weren’t aware there was anyone to save but… we can take you with us now.’ She said confidently with a soft smile gracing her lips.

‘Take me with you? Like…to the outside?’ You ask shakily as your brain struggles to determine if this is real or some deranged illusion your subconscious had formed as distraction.

‘Yes. We have a quintet-‘ You raised an eyebrow ‘a plane. We have a plane to take us and the rest of the team back to our compound, we will take you with us, nobody is trapping you here anymore.’ The woman took another step, now entering your cell and seemed to evaluate your body, you shrunk under her piercing green eyes, feeling vulnerable and ashamed of what had become of you.

‘Well I guess I don’t have much of a choice…though I haven’t taken a step in…well a little while, so there’s not much chance of me walking with you to this plane you have’ You admit quietly after a few moments.

Wanda knelt down, only inches from you this time, and slowly reached an arm out to you ‘That’s okay, I can get those cuffs off and carry you there, if that’s alright?’ She offered with a gentle tone, her hand emitting a Scarlett haze that soon popped the cuffs from your wrists, leaving them to clatter to the floor.

You winced slightly at the reddened rings now embedded into your skin, wiggling your wrists to gain some feeling back into them. You reached out and slid your palm into her awaiting one, weakly grasping her fingers as silent permission to touch you.

Natasha held open the cell door as the witch carefully lifted you into her arms and an inviting vanilla scent filled your nostrils. The two avengers walked silently down the hall and towards the main door. You could see a bright light only a few feet away, when she stepped out into it, the light hit your eyes and despite your squinting, shot a throbbing pain into your retina’s. Feeling you tense, Wanda glanced down and to see what was troubling you.

‘You can lean your head on my chest, turning your face towards me will help block the light a little more until we are on the jet.’

You didn’t question her words further, needing to get the pain to stop as quickly as possible, you wound your arms around her neck and nestled your face into the crook of her neck. Sighing with relief at the darkness it offered you.

Eventually, the pair reached the jet, Wanda still holding your body as she shook her head, a silent message to stop the questions on the tip of her teammates tongues as she wordlessly leaned down to place you on the bed at the back of the jet. Just as she was about to inform you that they were taking off, she felt soft, steady breaths hitting the side of her neck, you had fallen asleep in her arms.

Gently, Wanda placed you on the bed and removed her arms from beneath your body. Bringing a sheet over you and returning to Natasha in the chairs upfront. Her girlfriend turned to her with a saddened look ‘so, what now?’ The spy asked, lacing their hands together.

‘Now, we get her back to the compound and give her the help we fought so hard for…’

Hello,

Here is the life update of my past 4 years.

I began this blog many years ago in 2012 when I was only 14 years old, and I then slowly gained the courage to start posting art at 17 when I joined the K fandom. It's wild to think that I am now 25!

I was never quite consistent in posting since I only shared my art here whenever I felt like it, but it slowed down ever so gradually to basically 1 post a year for Yata’s birthday. This blog helped me with my fear of showing my art to others as I was incredibly embarrassed of my work for a really long time.

I soon moved to the USA from my homeland and attended animation school for 1 year, and then studied illustration and visual development for 4 years and I managed to accomplish many things I never could have imagined. I graduated with honors this past May, was selected by the faculty and head of department as my major’s trustee scholar, completed my 84-page art book thesis, got a few pieces into the Society of Illustrators, and my school even shot a mini docu-film about me, my art and my life where I got to share my upbringing. Art school was very demanding and at times tough but I managed to get a lot out of it :)

In July of this year, I moved to California from Florida and I’m much happier than I’ve ever been. I come from a very small country so I never expected to get this far in the art world. I drew Yata for fun in my bedroom whenever I wanted to and now I’m in LA breaking into the animation industry (receiving my first credit too!)

the drawings I share here are a very very small part of the illustrations I make weekly. I wish I could share them with everyone as I’m very proud of them but I enjoy separating my fandom life from my real life a little too much! Surprisingly I am working as a background artist at the moment despite never drawing backgrounds in this blog lol. I think many of you would be surprised at how different my work is from irl!!

It hasn’t always been great, so I don't want to make it seem like it's been all perfect. I’ve had many hard times too and at the moment I am extremely homesick since I haven't returned home in a long time but I think these are needed sacrifices.

However, I'm excited for 2024. I'm looking forward to growing as an artist and my goal is to continue to have fun with art as much as I have right now. I think I’m lucky to have a great support system including my best friend @fuurais who has been by my side for 10+ years and I managed to convert into a K artist too <3

Thank you for the support, for the kind messages, and for the excitement every time I post. I am always happy when I think of this blog and the friends I made. I unironically think about Yata every day as he is past being my comfort character tbh. I am currently writing this with full-on orange hair that I've had for a few years now lol.

I don’t think I’ll be as active as I was at 17 but I will try to not ghost this blog completely. There are a lot of things I haven’t drawn yet that I really want to do and I'd love to share those drawings with everyone.

in general i prefer to draw vaguely humanoid femmes with a thing for raccoons (you know which fandom im in), so those characters will likely get in the queue first. this ain’t a “first-come, first-served” thing, it’s a “which character does my brain want to gnaw on, with or without my consent” thing.

i got too swamped last time because i just accepted/took on too many requests at once which resulted in some glorious individuals waiting MONTHS for their doodles to be done and while that could still happen, i am hoping to avoid it by keeping the queue shorter and just closing/reopening more frequently

worth noting i’ve only ever drawn three anthro characters (see one of ‘em below) so if you so request that, just know i’m a novice

i may also end up adding a few to the queue as well (i really want to revisit ember, dori, petra, maybe fleuret and rose, always juno — would love a chance to draw jupe of one of @frostedwitch’s other OCs too!). ive also been playing with a new-to-me, semi-lineless style i might use your characters to practice on.

Okay, so I’m a bit wine drunk but I don’t think I’ve ever really articulated why I love Snarry together and I’m currently trying to finish a fic after taking a three-year-hiatus from writing these two, so this is probably a good exercise!

I’m a bit on the older side of fandom, having been a fanartist and fervent reader since 2003, so my connection was really sparked during that time between OOTP and HBP when Snape and Harry were at some of their most clashing and deeply vitriolic, forced together into hateful vulnerability by Occulmency lessons. Every scene between them was electric, laced with tension as we truly did not know how things would go, or even where Snape’s true loyalties lay. He was an unknown, tied up with Harry’s own family’s mysterious past, connected to Harry in a myriad of odd ways that few other characters were, and - as a rivals-to-lovers lover - I was fascinated by him. From that first moment when they lock eyes in the Great Hall and that frisson of pain shoots through Harry’s scar, I desperately wanted to know who the hell this man was and his story. I think a lot of Snarry shippers come to the ship with a special appreciation for Severus Snape’s character himself. He’s such an incredibly drawn character, rich with complexity, complicated and pretty fucked up, with clearly-held passions, hatreds, weaknesses, and motivations. He’s emotional in a way a lot of other characters aren’t, though I think he’d loathe to hear that. And his character voice! It’s unique and pitch-perfect. You always know exactly who is speaking with his lines. Honestly, the way he evolved from a spy/traitor stock character to become so multifaceted and enigmatic is a masterpiece of characterization, and it’s an aspect of why I’m drawn to him - there’s still so much about his origins and well, what his damage was, that we don’t know. Because of this, I especially love Snarry fics that delve into character studies of him, trying to explore all the shadows left behind. I also admit I have a preference for interpreting Snape as morally grey. I like him petty, sharp-tongued, ambitious, with an incredibly liquid definition of what is right and wrong. He’s self-interested, dripping with disdain, and really doesn’t see that as a problem. What happens to him when he deeply falls in love?

I love a ship that makes me work for it. There’s no obvious line of how Snape and Harry might wind up together, so each fic is a wealth of possibilities of bringing these two together despite their roadblocks. As I mentioned, I’m big fan of animosity in a ship. Give me rivals, give me enemies, give me the sparking passions, the sharp fury, the way they stoke each others’ emotions and seek to hurt, the racing hearts, the raised hackles, the intense emotional reaction to another person. Just throw it at me. I devour that shit. I love the messy and taboo nature of their relationship, the complications raising from their age difference, temperaments, and largely similar and shared traumas. There’s an interesting element of Snape being a foil to James Potter, and how that relates to Harry and their past. Basically, this shit is really good potting soil for incredible fucking fics, packed with nutrients.

The shared natures of their traumas, like Voldemort and each being forgotten and abused as children and how they might be able to understand each other and bond from it is also something that’s fascinating to explore. I love when a writer pushes on Snape’s bruises, looking to make them hurt, cracking his sardonic brain open and rooting around in there, and I love when they compare and contrast to Harry’s. There’s a seductiveness to how Snape is so obsessed with Harry, fixated on his Boy Who Lived heroic reputation, clearly dripping with envy. What, beyond jealousy, might draw Snape to Harry and what, other than hatred, might draw Harry to Snape?

It’s all this, the passionate, electric, dangerous nature of their relationship; the way their characters contrast each other yet have surprising connections; and the question of finding solace that keeps me here, 21 years later. I’ve had wines less complex than this ship. They’re fascinating. They’re messy. They’re everything.

Color Theory in ATLA: Part 2

Let’s talk colors! ATLA is a colorful show! I’ve already covered color coding at a surface level here if you want to read. But how else does ATLA use color narratively? This post will cover the importance of color in the narrative, which gave us such iconic, visually striking scenes as the last agni kai.

By the way, this is actually a propaganda post for @multicolor-fandom-tournament, where you should totally go vote for ATLA in the final. As much as I love Pokemon, I wanna see someone else win a poll for once. Give ATLA some love. But mostly, it's just an analysis post about Zuko. Anyway, let’s get started.

The biggest use of color in the narrative is long and drawn out, but concludes in the most visually striking scene in the series, the last agni kai between Zuko and Azula. This showdown is foreshadowed at various points throughout the show. Despite red typically being the color of fire and characters associated with it, Azula is strongly associated with the color blue. She is the only character who bends blue fire, and one of the few who can bend lightning, which is also depicted as blue. It’s described as “the cold-blooded fire.”

As Zuko’s character progresses throughout the series, he becomes haunted by the colors red and blue. The first major instance comes after he frees Appa, a selfless act that doesn’t benefit him in any way. It apparently shocks even him so much that he becomes ill and falls into a feverish sleep, where he dreams that he is the Fire Lord sitting upon the throne. Two dragons, one red, one blue, hover nearby. The blue dragon speaks with Azula’s voice and tempts him, telling him to sleep, to rest. The red dragon speaks in Iroh’s voice. It warns him not to listen to the blue dragon and tells Zuko that he must get out of there. The scene begins to crumble, and the blue dragon lunges for him. My personal interpretation of this scene is that the blue dragon represents the royal family—Zuko’s “destiny” to return to the Fire Nation and take the throne. The blue dragon tells him to sleep, to accept his destiny, while the red one encourages him to break free of the cycle perpetuated by the royal family.

This is supported by another scene with two dragons later in the narrative. In the episode The Avatar and the Fire Lord, Zuko goes below the royal palace to the archives where the history of the royal family is stored. The episode covers the history of Fire Lord Sozin and Avatar Roku and the background of Sozin’s imperialistic goals. We learn that Sozin and Roku were once friends, but had a falling out over Sozin’s ambitions. Despite this, Sozin returns to help Roku when the volcano on Roku’s home island erupts.

What does Sozin arrive on but a blue dragon.

The two fight the volcano together, and appear to be winning, but as they try to escape, Roku takes a blast of poisonous air to the face, and falls to his knees, begging Sozin to help him.

Sozin refuses, saying that with Roku gone, his plans will finally be possible. He flies away on his blue dragon, leaving Roku for dead. Roku’s dragon, Fang, who is red and often appears in visions to help the current Avatar, Aang, curls protectively around Roku as the hot ash consumes them.

Iroh then reveals to Zuko that, while Sozin was his great grandfather on his father’s side, so was Avatar Roku, on his mother’s side. If Zuko’s previous fever dream was any indication, he already knows he’s capable of breaking free of the cycle, but has been using his “destiny” as an excuse why he can’t. He’s destined for the throne. He’s destined to continue the cycle. But now Iroh tells him, if Sozin was a part of his destiny, then too, was the Avatar. And now, Zuko must confront the idea that he has a choice, that he always has, and that his destiny to rule and continue the cycle of violence is an idea of his own making.

When Zuko later confronts Ozai in Day of Black Sun, his choice is solidified, not just by his words as he confronts his father, but visually, as he redirects a shot of blue lightning meant to kill him.

The red and blue dragons also get one final appearance before the big showdown. Zuko finds that after joining the Avatar, his firebending is weaker, as it was once fueled by rage and anger and his drive was chasing the Avatar, which he has now lost. When Zuko and Aang go to the Sun Warriors to unlock the secrets of firebending, they must be judged by the two masters. Up until the moment of confrontation, neither Zuko nor Aang realize that “the masters” are two dragons, since the last dragons were thought to have been hunted to extinction by none other than the royal family.

When Zuko and Aang confront the dragons, they are judged for their worthiness. These two visual symbols, which have been haunting Zuko for the past season and a half, accept his change of heart and encircle Zuko and Aang in multicolored flames, colors Zuko has never seen and couldn’t even imagine. Zuko then says:

“I understand.”

This could be interpreted in a variety of ways, but mine is that Zuko still had doubts about whether or not he was doing the right thing until this moment (or else, wouldn’t his firebending still be working?). He wasn’t totally committed yet. When he sees so many colors dancing among the flames, the big “secret” he understands is harmony. His destiny is to bring harmony and balance back to the world, the red and blue dragons, the Avatar and the Fire Lord, working in tandem to accomplish it. He accepts this as his new drive and motivation, allowing him to firebend again.

By the time Zuko and Azula finally meet for their final showdown, the red/blue struggle within Zuko is long established and all but resolved. The only thing that remains is the externalization of the struggle: him, represented by red, vs. Azula, represented by blue. Zuko has accepted his change in destiny and aligned himself with the Avatar. Azula has not, and remains a representation of the royal family, of the status quo.

And then, we get the most visually striking fight in the whole series.

I really don’t know what else to tell you. This scene is so iconic because it’s been built up to with this color symbolism over the past two seasons. It’s satisfying to watch. It’s beautifully animated.

It ends with Azula getting one last shot of blue lightning, which up until now was believed to be an instant kill shot. The monarchy’s last ditch shot to bring Zuko down with it. But Zuko throws himself in front of Katara, taking it head on. It should have killed him, but Katara saves him. Azula is defeated, Zuko survives, and he lives to bring balance back to a world divided by war.

And when Zuko finally gets his own dragon, what color is it?

Red.

Hi!

I’m Ginger: artist-nerd, citizen-scientist, make-garden-not-lawn enthusiast, and avid baker-of-cinnamon-rolls-from-scratch! I very much enjoy fandom! What is my weekly fanfic consumption like? High. Very High. Some of my current favs include: Star Wars (especially Kylux), The Witcher (here meaning I saw about an episode and a half of TWN, found the fandom, and wandered happily off towards Lambert and Aiden), LotR, sometimes StarTrek…..assorted others! I am passionate about creating things, too! Often, that means drawing fan art and/or comics. Actually, I’ve found myself stalling intermittently in that department over the past year or so. I’ve been almost exclusively drawing Kylux things using only Procreate, for a while now. Which I love doing! But I suspect doing just that one type of art for going on 4 years now is starting to have an effect of the breadth and depth of my creative well. So I’ve decided to change up how I create for a while! A good friend gifted me a sketchbook IRL and I want to fill it with traditional media drawings. I want to try drawing from more fandoms, try out new digital techniques and styles that maybe I hadn’t allowed myself before. I want to invest some time into art forms besides drawing, even - I’ve always enjoyed fiber arts and I’ve got a jack loom I’ve meant to finish repairing for a while. Once that is working, I want to learn to weave. And I want to share some of these things here! On that note, I suspect more than a few people who follow me on Tumblr are here because I have drawn a lot of kylux. Especially the long-form fan comic ‘Dying Is Easy Young Man, Living Is Harder’. WRT The Comic: Kraken and I are still fully intending to see it to it’s conclusion! Honestly, though, it’s been on unofficial hiatus for a while now and it’s likely to remain that way for a bit longer. Kraken is super busy with retraining and job related demands IRL, and I am also pretty swamped and trying to get back in a more sustainable groove artistically. The whole sitch doesn’t leave us a lot of room to create a big project like DIEYMLIH together, right now. I know firsthand how hard it can be to wait a long time for a story you enjoy to get finished - so I want to say ‘thank you’ to everyone being very patient with us! We will get there eventually! I probably should have been sharing here for years, because people on tumblr remain My People, but I’ve neglected to ever talk about the candles I make (cross posting is HARD, okay?)

But it’s black Friday, I’ve redone my packaging, and I’m proud of these candles! They're all inspired by the fandoms I've been in and they come in tins (safe for dorms and longer lasting) and votives (a perfect sample size). Each one is handmade by me and comes with art I've drawn.

The two above are for Our Flag Means Death! Ed's candle smells like yummy lavender soap and the open ocean. Stede's candle smells like orange marmalade and tea.

There are four candles for Good Omens, inspired by Aziraphale, Crowley, the bookshop and the flat

My other best sellers are The Magnus Archives and the Witcher. Jon's candle is a layered candle to symbolize his corruption by the entities. It starts with vanilla and gets spicier the longer you burn the candle.

I just saw your post about the fat stan portrayal and I think both you and her gave unfortunate implications. While I'm not really surprised that the SP fandom has fatphobic rhetoric considering how cartman popularized the "fat = evil" stereotype on mainstream media, I'm disappointed surprised that you 2 said stuff like that since both of you are the most level headed and critical of Fandom.

Anyway, there are 2 reasons Stan is portrayed as fat, the 1st one is because current day Trey Parker is fat and they use him as reference to draw pcov Stan.

And the 2nd reason and what motivated me to send this ask is that queer people have a subculture called "Bears" that celebrates gay men who are fat, hairy and muscular and try to explore themes of body positivity within gay men since the stereotype of gay men being all feminine and thin is alienating to them, and since most of the fanart is style fanart, they use Stan as an outlet to express this part of the culture. There is also the bara genre of MLM art that explore men with these type of bodies in opposition to yaoi that portray men as dehumanized beings.

Honestly, I think you saying "it's probably a fat fetish" was very insulting, it honestly reminds me of the "there are 2 genders, men and woke" meme on the sense of "there are 2 body types, thin and fetish". It's not fetishist stuff, it's about queer culture.

In the end, hope you take this lightly, I seen some hate asks you gotten and I understand if you get defensive, I wish you take this as an opportunity of rethinking it.

but i wasn’t really referring to the way he’s drawn in pc. or even the people who draw him chubby. i draw pc stan chubby too. when i reblogged that post i was referring to the way some people over exaggerate how chubby pc stan was. i never said anything about pc stan being fat, i never said anything about people drawing him to be snacky. i said something about when people make stan and other characters (ironically, besides cartman) to be morbidly obese. i’ve seen it with kyle too, where people draw him to be obese. i’ve seen it with the girls too. and i never said fat = evil. i never said that. i would never say that. but i understand why that may have offended you.

but i never said anything about chubby people. or about body types in real life. i was talking about the way some people overexaggerate how big he is. plus whenever he’s like that in fanart kyle is always that antisemitic, rooted in stereotypes twink version of himself. it’s usually either because people like twinkifying kyle and making stan a testosterone wielding masculine manly man or whatever. but i never said anything about there only being two body types. or anything about chubby people. i said people in this fandom know how to draw three types of bodies. either morbidly obese, twink, or overly muscular. and those body types are never applied to the characters they’re applicable to. they never make cartman heavy. they never make kyle anything but a twink. etc etc. it doesn’t seem to be about “queer culture” when the other man in the MlM relationship is mischaracterized and becomes a bersion of themselves that is soaked in stereotypes. i know about bears and stuff. i don’t have anything against them. but when you have a MlM relationship and you’re making one of them over exaggeratedly obese or muscular and the other is a ‘smol defenseless twink’ then it becomes a problem.

but i’m sorry if i offended you, or anyone else. i understand why what i said might be offensive but i did not mean it in that way.

I need to get this off my chest.

I’ve been vocal about the IDW/Ian Flynn haters in the past. In fact, they’re the entire reason why I mostly left this platform. But it never ends. Whether it’s on tumblr or twitter or even in twitch chats, it never ends!

Don’t you get tired? Just go somewhere else? Just ignore the comics. The argument always comes up of “We can’t ignore it, they’ll ruining Sonic.” You can. You absolutely can!

I very much hate the Animal Crossing series now despite having liked it in the past. You don’t see me constantly writing essays about how bad it is. You don’t see me hating on every bit of news that comes out with it.

Comic books are a monthly narrative. They’re a medium very different from video games. I understand that people want Sonic to be a particular way. I do too, if I’m being honest. But I’m also aware that it’s a different interpretation as has been Archie Sonic, Movie Sonic, Fleetway Sonic, X Sonic, Underground Sonic, and so on. Sonic always changes based on the medium and interpretation. Heck, he changes between games. Sonic being “chatty” in the comics is a different interpretation and part of the entire medium of comic books. It’s how reading works.

I’m not going to claim that IDW or Ian Flynn are perfect. Is Sonic too morally righteous in the comics? Yes. Is Shadow written as an edgelord and against his growth from the game canon? Yes. Does Eggman lacking any back-up plans seem idiotic? Yes. Have the stories gotten a bit too repetitive with them constantly going to the Eggperial City? Yes. Is this something worth exploding over every month? NO!

All media is going to have things that aren’t perfect. You’re allowed to dislike it, but where is the line drawn in how much you need to vent about it?

The reason I want to write this post is how the “opinions” against the comics and Flynn have gotten to this unavoidable, venomous point. I’ve seen haters say how they’re excited to see the IDW sales fall so the comics eventually get canceled. How they want to take this particular faction of the Sonic fandom and dissolve it. I ask this genuinely: What is wrong with you!? Just because you dislike a particular part of a series means you want it destroyed even for those who enjoy it? Grow up. It’s selfish, mean, and just not what fandom is supposed to be about. The insults, the name-calling, the mob mentality, and everything coming out of this negative side of the fandom is really, really gross.

I’ve seen many haters always say that there are IDW-lovers who have also bullied, name-called, and even sent death threats. Now, I have never seen these myself besides retaliating against the haters who go too far. But I have never ever seen death threats over this (it could have been to previous writers and I may be mistaken). Now, I am stating it right here that just because I didn’t see these posts doesn’t mean they don’t exist. If they do, I obviously do not condone that behavior. It is awful! But I also see the haters bringing up these examples to justify any action they take. I’ve lost track of how many times it’s been brought up. First off, you know (if the posts do exist) that it’s a couple of bad apples amongst plenty of normal fans. But it’s brought up so often that I wonder... is it still a legitimate justification for how you’re acting? Even if it was one bad post, how much mileage can you get out of that? Does it still legitimize how you’ve been currently talking about others? Does it make your bullying fair? Your words do hurt and they do get to the ears of those you’re talking about.

And about Ian Flynn. You all need to stop. No, Ian Flynn is not perfect. No, I don’t think his Bumblekast things help a lot; in fact, it muddies a lot of the waters. But it’s a stupid podcast on the side... just ignore it. You do that with what’s actually written in the comic already. However you feel about him, Ian Flynn has contributed a lot to Sonic through Archie, IDW, and the games.

But there’s such a hatred for anything Ian Flynn puts his name on. I have a former friend who hated Sonic Frontiers before it came out simply because Ian Flynn was attached to it. The moment they heard he was the head writer, they wrote the game off. I am 100% sure that no matter how Frontiers or the story within it turned out, they would have disliked it. Just because Ian Flynn was in the end credits. The insults thrown at Ian Flynn, the artists, and writers of the IDW comics are inexcusable. If he has two characters even share a panel, you call it shipbaiting. If two female characters have a fight, you claim it’s written by a sexist man. If a villain is killed off-screen or turns out to be alive, you complain. This last point is exactly how a monthly, serialized story works. I don’t know if you’re unfamiliar with comic books outside of Sonic, but this is how the medium just is. Said villain gets killed and you shout foul about how the one “queer” character was killed. How the writers are homophobic for “leading readers on” and then killing him. There have been racists posts about the fandom praising Flynn over Japanese writers. You make posts ranting and raving how Nite and Don being a gay couple is bad because they’re “nothing characters” and then you post about how Don abandoned Nite... despite the fact that literally ONE PAGE LATER, he comes back to essentially die with his boyfriend.

It makes me wonder if the haters actually READ the comics or if they scan, decide they don’t like something, and then get angry. Sonic is a comic series under mandates and rules, especially after everything that went down with Archie. No, I’m not saying these mandates are excuses for poor characterization or writing, but it does somewhat explain why certain characters are handled in certain ways. The IDW comic writers are people with the freedom to take the characters in certain directions. That’s all. They’re creators working hard.

The defenses you all set up to lean back on Pontac and Graff is also bewildering. Now, if you love the “Meta Era” of games then that’s totally fine. I honestly don’t care which games you like. But retroactively praising the writing of games like Sonic Lost World and Sonic Forces is odd. Yes, Pontac and Graff are human beings and don’t deserve the massive hate and mistreatment they’ve been dealt. But their work is rightfully criticized. We went through over a decade of poor writing and canon being completely screwed up. But some of you will defend them because Eggman said he’d strangle a zeti or that the way he said the sun would crush the heroes justified so much in Forces. Why are you willing to die on this hill? For four games? For four games that have objectively more lighthearted and cookie cutter plots?

I’m not perfect in this. For a while, when Sonic Forces came out. I would make post after post about it. After a couple of months, I realized that I simply hated the game and I was harming the experience of people who liked it. I made an apology and I stopped. I still hate Sonic Forces. It’s still my most hated Sonic game, but you don’t see me reacting to the Infinite mini figure getting announced by making weeks of posts saying how badly he was written.

Just get over it. Move on. Stop hating on the aspects of a thing you’re supposed to be a fan of. Aren’t you miserable? Sonic the Hedgehog has been such a positive influence on my life. Sonic has inspired me, gotten me through bad times, and has introduced me to some of the best people I have ever met.

Why stick around and constantly surround yourself with such negativity? Again, I don’t hang around Animal Crossing things anymore and I’m personally better off for it. You’re in a fandom, but are you even fans anymore? You’ll hate everything that comes out simply because a particular writer is attached or because you’ve decided the comics have betrayed your headcanons. It’s gotten to the point where the IDW Haters really have become a joke. People see what you’re saying and it’s affecting the perception of the fandom. Moreover, you’re actively ruining the experience for fans around you and are voicing that you hope it fails.

That’s not what being part of a fandom is about. I am so, so, so tired of seeing negativity about the comics and Ian Flynn. Again, honest opinions are fine and I want people to feel how they feel. Their feelings should be valid. But having your opinions and becoming toxic to the point that you’re notorious for it... is just too much.

I love Sonic as I am sure many other fans do. Hell, there’s definitely love for Sonic with the IDW-haters as well; you wouldn’t feel so passionately about the blue blur if you didn’t care. But just take some perspective and realize what this is doing.

I had a good friend once who I thought would be somebody I could always relate to for good and bad. This friend would get angry if I didn’t agree to certain comments about Dr. Eggman and would be upset if I didn’t reply in a certain way to certain posts. It was like walking on egg shells. It came to a point where I needed to separate myself from that person. They became constantly toxic about all things modern Sonic. It made me feel depressed and guilty just to enjoy the series that I love. Toxicity is something that just corrodes you to the pit of your soul if it goes too deep. I miss this friend, but I don’t think I can ever truly be friends with them that way again. It affects me so often to this day.

Please, feel how you feel about Sonic comics, movies, games, whatever. Just realize how much your distaste for something is affecting you, your friendships, and others. I can’t stand this kind of drama anymore. I just want to love Sonic and want people to love Sonic as well. That’s what fandom is supposed to be about.
