Let's Talk About: Burrow's End and A Second Sun
Tumblr media
This episode is unhinged in all the best ways. Like, sure, the storytelling was a little paced down after the events of "Bearing the Scars," but I am an advocate for lulls after batshit shenanigans happen. Especially because it does feel like more shenanigans are in Aabria's plans moving forward.
Sidebar! I don't trust you, Aabria, not to have broken our hearts before this season ends. Not after that vision you gave Viola of having so many stoat babies in a place with gray walls. Oh no. I have my eyes and ears on you.
That said, even with "A Second Sun" being way more chill, the cast is still chaotically hilarious. And I truly, truly, truly love how Jasper William Cartwright is rolling this season. He has Murph's Luck: a DM who is rolling poorly while his wife (fictional, in Jasper's case) is getting all the high rolls.
Also, he out-Brit-ted Siobhan this episode. There's just something about how he was playing in this episode that made his Britishisms stand out more. I love it.
And rolling a 14 and getting Erika to unclench her whole body? I was laughing so hard.
Pretty quiet episode though plot-wise. We do get some teases. And them ending the episode where they end up in only cements my fear that Aabria has plans that will crush our souls soon, and over and over again before the series ends. But other than that? A solid outing.
This week's stray thoughts:
Did the Blue start out as an experiment?
Funerals being for the people who are left behind is soooo right.
And the thing that made me laugh out the loudest:
"Oh she's a ho."
See you next week, excellent ermines!

Here's my Very Scientific taxonomic system for mustelids, based on observations on iNaturalist:
Baby sock – ex. weasels, stoats, ermines. Will never truly reach adulthood. They have never done anything wrong in their life. Sometimes property damage is for the greater good. (If house not for baby sock, why house holes baby sock shaped? 👀) Absolute angels.
Tumblr media
Cat snek – ex. Polecats, ferrets, minks. There are 2 theories for their evolutionary origin: 1. someone allowed a baby sock to reach adulthood 2. A kitten got stuck in a paper towel tube & never recovered. They try to do the zoomies & they just flop around like noodles. Heartbreaking if true
Tumblr media
Baby bear – ex. Fishers, martens. We can see an evolutionary effort to appear/become more threatening & acquire larger meals (ex. scawy teefs!), but look at that lil face!
Tumblr media
Actual bear – ex. Wolverines. Could definitely fuck you up if they wanted to. One of the only creatures bold enough to fight the horrors of the arctic (moose & polar bears). Actually scawy
Tumblr media
Grumpus – ex. Badgers, mostly. quite cozy & content with themselves, however quite disappointed in you. Don't touch their stuff, trust me. (Many believe the only things distinguishing them from the "actual bears" are 1. the lack of a formidable opponent & 2. their appreciation of the finer things in life.) The ultimate Taurus. Would make an excellent judgmental rug
Tumblr media
Aquatic gargoyles – ex. Otters, especially giant otters & American river otters. I know otters mostly have a reputation of being Very Cute (and that's fair, all mustelids are). But when one compares these guys to the rest of the mustelids, one may be tempted to ask, "what happened to you? What have we done to the river that created you?"
Tumblr media
Feel free to add some more science to this post lol. Ex. honorable mention: Stinky Sock (skunks, mostly)

Burrow's End is tapping into one of my favorite things from EXU Prime and what I can tell of Aabria's storytelling style in general: the breakdown of a larger story and thematic question into acts.
In EXU, the larger thematic question was power, and each act presented a different challenge to the party's viewpoint on power. Act 1 was the party vs. Poska: what do you do when you don't have power? Do you keep power when you find it, and who do you trust with it? Act 2 was the party vs. the Spider Queen: what could you do with enormous power? Do you resist the temptation or give in? What would the course of your life look like if you had more power? And Act 3 was the party vs. Muratta/Mud Ted: what would push you to accept this power and its consequences? What would you be willing to give up?
Six episodes in, I can see Burrow's End, similarly, breaking down into that same act structure. The larger thematic questions are around home, safety, family, violence: who do you protect, and what would you give to protect them?
Act 1 was our stupendous stoats vs. the wood/the outside world, seeking safety from external threats like the bear or lack of shelter and food. How do you make a home faced with these threats? How can you find safety when you're just a small group against this whole world? Does this new environment change the dynamics of your family? What kind of violence are you willing or able to enact to protect them?
Act 2 was our excellent ermines vs. the society of Last Bast, finding safety from external threats but facing internal tensions they're not prepared for. How do you make a home inside the threats of an institution? What does safety look like when you're lost in and expected to conform to this larger group? Does this new environment change the dynamics of your family? And how is the violence here similar or different to the kind you already know?
And Act 3? I think it's just starting as our capsizing creatures make their way into another environment (as far as I can tell, the creepy underground lair of the First Stoats). I don't know how it's going to wrap up, but I'm excited to see the other facets of these themes explored. Will it be the First Stoats' use of violence and exploitation for survival against the humans? Will it be tensions within the family rising and coming to a head? Will it just be more hats?
I guess we'll see. But I just love the way this structure allows us to build on the world and story progression in understandable, thematically-rich ways, and how it preserves the sense of narrative pacing and momentum. As Brennan said: this show rules.

Seven of my favourite photos I took in July 2023 and month summary
The photos are of; Marmalade hoverfly at Egleton Nature Reserve at Rutland Water, view at Andrews Mare in the New Forest, Brown Hairstreak at Shipton Bellinger, Chalkhill Blue at Stockbridge Down, Four-spotted Chaser at Hickling Broad, water mint at Lakeside Country Park and White Storks at Knepp.
July was another fantastic wild month for me with so much seen and so many places visited, a key part of real core weeks in my wildlife year. We saw and did so much it feels as though things right at the start were more than a month ago!
It was one of my greatest ever months of butterflies. There were nine excellent species additions to my year; the dream moment when we were amazed to see a Swallowtail in Norfolk, another very successful Purple Emperor search at Knepp seeing them so well as well as Silver-washed Fritillary, White Admiral and lovely White-letter Hairstreak, always a quintessential summer moment I think seeing beautiful Chalkhill Blues at Stockbridge Down and Brown Hairstreak, Wall Brown and Silver-spotted Skipper on an extraordinary day at Shipton Bellinger and Perham Down making my butterfly year list my highest ever. Purple Hairstreak at Knepp and various times at Lakeside was another key butterfly I loved seeing this month, with Marbled White, Ringlet and Small Skipper enjoyed too. The arrival of Big Butterfly Count was something I enjoyed doing, counting the butterflies to help inform how species are doing again. This also helped uncover (although I’d have surely noticed anyway) for me that we are onto a bumper year of Red Admirals with so many around which has been fun. Gatekeeper, Meadow Brown, Small White, Green-veined White, Holly Blue, Common Blue, Comma, Peacock, Brimstone, Small Copper and Small Tortoiseshell were other of the target species enjoyed, with Brown Argus seen nicely this month too. Six-spot Burnet which I’ve also seen so many of this year and Silver Y are day flying moths in the count I’ve liked seeing this month in another good one for moths with my first ever Forester a pretty one and a Mint moth at Stockbridge Down as well as Synaphe punctalis on that pivotal insect day for me as well as Yellow Shell at Knepp, a few Bird-cherry Ermine at Rutland Water and Shipton Bellinger, Pearl Veneer at Lakeside and Pyrausta nigrata at Shipton Bellinger key ones seen.
Bird wise it was another smashing month, with a charming Ruddy Shelduck seen at Petersfield Heath Pond, an inspiring day at Knepp getting exquisite views of the monumental White Storks young and old, of course another valuable chance to see the astonishing and wondrous Bee-eaters at Trimingham on the Norfolk trip and in among all the inspiring talks and lovely interaction at the Bird Fair my first Green Sandpiper and Yellow-legged Gulls of the year at Rutland Water’s Egleton reserve during that long weekend both top birds of my year. On those two weekends away this month part of one of my best runs of weekends throughout the year with so much packed in and many big trips we like to do going to Norfolk and Rutland stunning views of majestic Marsh Harrier, exceptional views of Osprey including seeing one hunt, Hobby seen extremely well and at both gorgeous Great White Egrets so well established in those areas now were other big highlights, with Egyptian Geese enjoyed at both and the Petersfield Heath Pond visit including seeing young. Sand Martin, Common Tern, Blackcap, Linnet and Yellowhammer were other standouts this month, with the Lakeside Great Crested Grebes with both families doing well I really enjoyed seeing multiple times as well as Moorhens with young, seeing Peregrines in Winchester including the chick Rosie too. I have also really appreciated Swift and House Martin this month especially on patch, and with gull numbers going up again at Lakeside young Black-headed and also an adult Mediterranean Gull were key moments there this month.
It was also one of my best ever months for dazzling dragonflies and damselflies, with our first ever Norfolk Hawkers, Brown Hawker, Ruddy Darter and Emerald Damselfly coming into our year on the Norfolk trip, Brown Hawker enjoyed again alongside immense Southern Hawker views at Rutland Water with Common Darter, Four-spotted Chaser and locally and further afield Black-tailed Skimmer seen well this month. It was a top month of mammals with smashing views of Water Vole and Stoat at Rutland Water and Stockbridge Down on the long weekend, big mammals in what has got to be my best year of mammals with so many amazing species seen. Fallow and Muntjac Deers at Knepp and Norfolk respectively added to those brilliant times. There were lots of great moments with other insects with Black Clock beetle, Peacock butterfly caterpillar and Garden Tiger moth caterpillar at Hickling Broad, Marmalade (also seen at Lakeside) and Long Hoverfly at Egleton, Rutland Water in a strong month of hoverflies, striking and symbolic of summer Cinnabar moth caterpillars first seeing these at Knepp, so many Common Red Soldier beetles seen what a stalwart of summer, Black-and-yellow longhorn beetle something I was fixated on at Lakeside and Meadow grasshopper at Stockbridge Down with Common Field Grasshopper at Lakeside standing out with nice spider moments too.
In my plant year July felt like the very mature time in the flower year it is with some of the last flowers I expect to see blooming including hemp agrimony, water mint and red bartsia. Wild carrot, marjoram and basil, great willowherb, purple loosestrife, bird vetch, pyramidal orchid, St. John’s-wort, centaury, restharrow, scabious, mallow, scarlet pimpernel, many white clovers, rosebay willowherb, lady’s bedstraw, cuckoo-pint and agrimony have been others that stood out this month. With wetland, coast, meadow, rich grassland, lakes and woodland explored I enjoyed many breathtaking and panoramic views this month, as the weather was interestingly changeable. Have a good August all.

𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐓𝐔𝐒: Closed started for @thunyielding 𝐋𝐎𝐂𝐀𝐓𝐈𝐎𝐍: The Great Hall at Hampton court.  𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄: November of 1559
Tumblr media
Throughout the months spent sojourning at Hampton court, the Queen of Scots learned that her coats lined with fine ermine fur would do little to prevent the chill of England's November frost from creeping into her bones. The golden rays of France's Summer sun kept the glorious little jewel swaddled in eternal warmth—reinsuring both her comfort and radiance whilst serving as her husband's consort. It was her uncles that spearheaded her claim in this frost-laden country, those greedy statesmen who delighted in the idea of their young niece seated upon the throne of England where she might finally restore the TRUE faith in these godless lands. Two thrones would never be enough for the Guise when Mary shared the blood of several prominent European dynasties. More than anything, the Queen understood that her kin's greed would spell her family's destruction should they be blinded by their own toxic ambition.
Behind her strolling in perfect unison followed four young ladies bearing their queen's namesake, donning a similar shade of elegant crimson as their mistress. Before Mary had been delivered to France as Henry II's prize, the four Marys were chosen as the Queen's chief ladies in waiting. Together, the four women modeled themselves after the glittering image of the Virgin mother and sought to serve their holy mistress as confidants and servants whilst she flourished under the tutelage of both her mother-in-law as well as her grandmother Antoinette de Bourbon. Like Mary, her ladies were rigorously trained to exhibit nothing less than what was expected of French excellence despite their Scottish origin. If the Pope and her uncles meant to dominate this court with carefully crafted lies, then Mary would put her charms to work if only to ease the the blow of their corruption. A slight upturn of rosebud lips could enchant even the most sheltered of English hearts and that, Mary decided, was how she would win this freezing country to her cause. By hook or by crook, the English would EMBRACE their Scottish neighbor as they would their own.
Though she had been rather off put by the lack of attention shown to her by the Tudor King, Mary was determined to treat with his Boleyn relatives regardless of their sordid past, heretic faith, and distasteful Dowager. If she could not build a lasting rapport with the King, Mary would find an ally in his sister—the previous lady regent. In truth, Mary knew little of her cousin, the Princess of England. The occasional reports from the French ambassador to England hardly provided a provided a satisfactory description of Elizabeth's appearance and temperament. As always, the defiant Queen decided that she would meet her cousin on her own terms and without her uncle's ever cautious advice.
At first sight of England's precious diamond in the Great Hall of Hampton court, The Scottish Queen's four ladies simultaneously ladies sank into a low and tirelessly rehearsed curtsy as a sign of respect for her Highness—further exemplifying the prestige of good French breeding. Of course, Mary did not bow, for she was a Queen in her own RIGHT and needn't do anything except nod her auburn head at her cousin and lace a subtle smile along the surface of her pouty lips.
"My sweet cousin." She began, her voice ever warm and dulcet as her French lilt dominated her tone. "Too long have I waited to enjoy the company of my kin." Mary added as her eyes quickly scanned the stature of the Princess Elizabeth. The Queen could not help but compare herself to her cousin who stood nearly a foot shorter than herself but still bore their lineage's famed copper hair. Elizabeth was a Tudor through and through, and yet the glimmer of her Boleyn heritage showed proudly through several of her features. A slight wave of her hand sent the four Marys that smiled sweetly behind her away with another elegant curtsy. Like sparkling ORNAMENTS meant to be admired but not heard, her ladies would disperse and position themselves into important circles that would bring their queen good fortune in the form of Boleyn secrets. "Should time permit, I would like nothing more than to spend this eve with you."

OCs as Animals Tag
Tagged by @autumnalwalker - their post is here. Thank you for giving me a chance to ramble about this! 💜
Leaving it as an open tag!
Rules: Choose any Oc/s and pick an animal that relates to them and why. You can also include images or drawings of your own but don't have to.
Welp. All of my characters have have a little familiar spirit that takes an animal form. This should be easy... Right?
Lissan - Sword Spirit: a She-Wolf
The Wolf has mostly negative connotations in Slavic folklore, often being associated with the devil, foretelling famine, etc, but in reality is such a lovely, fluffy animal. There's one local tale I've found in a collection of local legends and superstitions from 1881 and it stuck with me, even though I tend to avoid religious imagery. In summary, the Devil wanted to make a pet out of the wolf, and the wolf turned against them.
When the God created the wolf, it was dead. The Devil was very concerned by it and their inability to bring it back to life. The God told the Devil: go tell the wolf "get up, by God's power", but the Devil went and said to the wolf "get up, my my power", and the wolf didn't move. The God then suggested: tell the wolf "get up, by God's power, and rest the Devil", but the devil said "get up, by my power, and eat God", and the wolf didn't move. After a couple more attempts, embarrassed, the Devil whispered "get up, by God's power". The wolf jumped to its feet and lounged at the Devil. It chased the Devil to an alder tree, and bit into their leg, forever staining alder trees red with the Devil's blood.
Gullin - Sword Spirit: a Wren (or goldcrest)
Note: in European folklore these two birds are often used interchangeably.
The usual story goes: the birds held a contest to choose their new king. The eagle was the clear favourite and everyone assumed it would win, but the wren nestled in its feathers and hitched a ride on it, until it couldn't fly any higher. Then it jumped off and flew just enough to win. This sort of underhanded cunning approach is right up Gullin's alley.
Also, look at this little thing, it's less than 4in/10cm long:
Tumblr media
Ianim - Sword Spirit: [redacted]
Sorry! It's a bit of a spoiler, and he isn't willing to talk about it even to his closest friends. However, he also has a cool horse, a grey stallion called Cloud, sired by his Grandfather's Sword Spirit. And while his own Sword isn't all that powerful, he excels at everything related to horse riding.
Notable mentions:
Varré's Spirit is never specified, because I'd love for it to be a fluffiest, angriest pillow a Pallas cat, but alas, it's not native to Europe.
General Anthea, the Chief Strategist and the First Prince, who has a Sword controlling ice and is sometimes nicknamed the Prince of Ice, has a snow leopard. But again, not native to Europe.
General Erya the Ermine, the Army's spymaster, is a feisty little ferret.

Lyra please for the ask! :)
they are soooooo cool looking: Every time I see Lyra in her Arctic furs and holding the alethiometer, I get a little rush of joy 🥰
if they were real I would be afraid of them: Or rather afraid of the trouble she might get herself into!
they're like a blorbo to me: She is that!
they're deeper than they seem: 'You got witch oil in your soul.'
i want to carry them in a handbag like a tiny dog: And by that I mean carry Pantalaimon, in his white ermine form. Same being, same thing.
i'm mentally ill about them: Her story in The Amber Spyglass puts me through the wringer 😭
they work better as part of a dynamic: Roger. 😭 Iorek. 🥰 Lee. 😭 Will. 😭😭😭 And, of course, Pantalaimon, both as an excellent double act and: "Her dear soul, the darling companion of her heart, to be cut away and reduced to a little trotting pet?"
they've never done anything wrong in their life <33:
"Deceptive, that’s what you are, child.”
Lyra was hurt.
“I en’t never deceived anyone! You ask…”
There was no one to ask, of course, and Ma Costa laughed, but kindly.
“Can’t you see I’m a paying you a compliment, you gosling?” she said, and Lyra was pacified, though she didn’t understand.

Beyond the Mona Lisa: The Lesser-Known Masterpieces of Leonardo da Vinci
Tumblr media
Leonardo da Vinci, a name synonymous with artistic brilliance, is often immediately associated with the enigmatic smile of the Mona Lisa. However, the genius of this Renaissance polymath extends far beyond that iconic portrait. Join us on a journey through the lesser-known masterpieces of Leonardo, exploring the depths of his creativity, curiosity, and unparalleled artistic vision.
Introduction: Unveiling the Genius
Leonardo da Vinci, the epitome of Renaissance genius, left an indelible mark on the world of art and science. While the Mona Lisa reigns supreme in popular culture, delving into the lesser-known masterpieces unveils the multifaceted brilliance of this extraordinary individual.
The Last Supper: A Feast of Emotions
The Last Supper, one of Leonardo's most iconic works, transcends its religious roots to become a timeless exploration of human emotion. In this masterpiece, Leonardo captures the poignant moment of Christ revealing that one of his disciples would betray him. The expressions on the faces of the disciples reveal a range of emotions, from shock and disbelief to sorrow and anger. The play of light and shadow adds depth to the composition, making it a feast of emotions frozen in time.
Vitruvian Man: Capturing the Essence of Humanity
In Vitruvian Man, Leonardo seamlessly intertwines art and science. This iconic drawing, accompanied by notes based on the work of the Roman architect Vitruvius, explores the proportions of the human body. The meticulous detailing and the perfect symmetry embody Leonardo's belief in the interconnectedness of humanity and the cosmos. It's a testament to his insatiable curiosity about the world around him.
Lady with an Ermine: A Glimpse into Elegance
Lady with an Ermine offers a glimpse into Leonardo's mastery in portraying feminine grace. Commissioned by Ludovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, this portrait captures the subtle elegance of Cecilia Gallerani, a young woman in the Duke's court. What sets this work apart is the inclusion of an ermine, a symbol of purity, nestled against her. The ermine's presence adds a layer of symbolism, and the delicate play of light accentuates the gracefulness of the subject.
The Baptism of Christ: Collaborative Excellence
Collaboration often enhances artistic endeavors, and The Baptism of Christ exemplifies this notion. While Leonardo is credited with painting the young angel holding Jesus' robe, the overall composition is a collaborative effort with his master, Andrea del Verrocchio. The fluidity of the water and the radiant atmosphere showcase the seamless blend of their artistic talents.
Ginevra de' Benci: Beauty in Simplicity
In Ginevra de' Benci, Leonardo captures the essence of beauty in simplicity. This portrait of a young woman from a wealthy Florentine family is a departure from the elaborate settings of some of his other works. The meticulous attention to detail, from the strands of hair to the delicate veil, showcases Leonardo's ability to elevate the ordinary to the extraordinary. Ginevra gazes directly at the viewer, inviting them into her world.
Adoration of the Magi: A Narrative Unfolding
Adoration of the Magi is a complex composition that unfolds like a narrative. Although left unfinished, this work provides a window into Leonardo's creative process. The multitude of characters and the intricate detailing in the architecture and landscape invite viewers to immerse themselves in the sacred journey of the Magi. Each figure seems to have a story to tell, creating a tapestry of emotions and symbolism.
Saint John the Baptist: The Mystical Aura
Saint John the Baptist exudes a mystical aura, characteristic of Leonardo's later works. The subject, John the Baptist, is depicted with an enigmatic smile, reminiscent of the Mona Lisa. The use of chiaroscuro, or the interplay of light and shadow, adds depth to the painting, emphasizing the contemplative and mysterious nature of the saint.
Anatomical Drawings: The Intersection of Art and Science
Leonardo's anatomical drawings stand as a testament to his unparalleled ability to merge art and science. His meticulous dissections and detailed sketches of the human body demonstrate not only his artistic skill but also his keen scientific observations. These drawings were not only groundbreaking in their accuracy but also laid the foundation for advancements in medical illustration.
Salvator Mundi: Rediscovering a Lost Treasure
In the rediscovery of Salvator Mundi, Leonardo's lost treasure takes center stage. Originally believed to be the work of a follower, the painting was later authenticated as a genuine Leonardo da Vinci. The composition, featuring Christ as Savior of the World, is a mesmerizing blend of spiritual serenity and artistic brilliance. The intricate detailing of Christ's orb and robes showcases Leonardo's commitment to perfection.
The Annunciation: A Divine Encounter
In The Annunciation, Leonardo depicts the angel Gabriel's visit to the Virgin Mary. The divine encounter is captured with a delicate balance of grace and reverence. The use of perspective and the intricate details, such as the fluttering angelic wings and Mary's contemplative demeanor, create a composition that transcends the biblical narrative, offering a moment frozen in time.
The Adoration of the Magi: A Pioneering Composition
The Adoration of the Magi showcases Leonardo's experimentation with perspective and narrative complexity. The unfinished nature of the work adds to its allure, inviting viewers to ponder the layers of meaning embedded in the composition. The intricate details, from the ornate clothing of the Magi to the architectural elements, demonstrate Leonardo's mastery in creating a visually rich and emotionally resonant narrative.
Madonna of the Carnation: Graceful Motherhood
In Madonna of the Carnation, Leonardo captures the tenderness of maternal love. The Madonna gazes affectionately at the Christ Child, holding a carnation—a symbol of love and purity. The use of light and shadow accentuates the softness of the scene, creating a portrayal of graceful motherhood that transcends its religious context.
Conclusion: Leonardo's Legacy Lives On
In conclusion, the legacy of Leonardo da Vinci extends far beyond the Mona Lisa. His lesser-known masterpieces provide a comprehensive view of his artistic evolution, from collaborative efforts like The Baptism of Christ to the introspective and enigmatic Saint John the Baptist. Leonardo's intersection of art and science, as seen in his anatomical drawings, paved the way for future generations of artists and scientists.
Leonardo's legacy lives on in the meticulous strokes of his brush and the inquisitive lines of his sketches. Each masterpiece tells a story, not just of the subjects portrayed but also of the artist himself—a man ahead of his time, a visionary whose creations continue to captivate and inspire. As we unveil these lesser-known treasures, we witness the enduring impact of a genius whose art transcends the boundaries of time and leaves an indelible mark on the canvas of history.
