hi dear yes i can recommend a few things that helped me! so it kind of depends what phase you're in but when i was first deconstructing i really loved the writing of sarah bessey, i enjoyed all her books but specifically jesus feminist helped show me a different picture of christianity. others in a similar vein are jeff chu and nadia bolz-weber (i would also recommend all of their newsletters). i also really liked brennan manning at that point. ymmv but i had to get rid of the young earth creationism so things like biologos and the language of science and faith by francis collins were really helpful to me. really can't stress enough how learning about evolution and the grand scale and interconnectedness of living things helped me dispose of the weird stunted anthropocentric worldview and honestly helped some with the end times shit too.

again depending on where you're at it may be helpful to go to services of other denominations and/or religions (quaker and episcopal churches helped me a lot). however i do think it's probably good for the ex sda soul to just not go to church for a while if you can and haven't tried that, particularly if you were super indoctrinated like i was. i felt like such a a sinner for this and it took me YEARS to start feeling normal about saturday being a regular day of the week and not Thee lord's day when you can't do so much as go out to eat etc but i did do it and i'm glad to report the weekend is so much better this way lmao. also i got a spiritual director! she's great and i would recommend considering that option if you find yourself wanting more personal and professional help/guidance on this journey.

after i got out of the initial trenches i got into deeper and more intellectually challenging (at least to me lol) writing like the medieval mystics, simone weil, christian wiman, richard rambuss, etc. those aren't necessarily relevant to this question though that's just what i was drawn to. also i'm not a podcast person but i think there's several exvangelical/deconstruction podcasts around if thats your thing although i can't recommend any personally.

remember to be gentle and very honest with yourself....the fundie rationale is that they have the only objectively right answer to everything by taking the bible (and for sda ellen white) super literally and the further away from them you get the more patently ridiculous that becomes, but it can obviously be frightening to see your whole worldview crumble. un/fortunately we are all just kind of here and trying to figure it (whatever it is) out more or less as best we can and there's not one right way to have (or not have) a relationship with god. luckily for all of us there's a lot less pressure than the evangelicals make it seem like. i will drop a couple tags that should have some other reading recommendations if you're interested!

Nothing screams religious trauma more than me waking up from a dream and being worried that the pastors and little us were right about us being a prophet because we dreamed California was on fire and it could be clearly seen from Nevada.

I wish we could have a normal relationship with our dreams now but years of conditioning has made it difficult.

I'm very lucky in that my religious baggage has almost nothing to do with my parents and way more to do with The Church. For a lot of reasons! One of them being that things like religious holidays are more strongly associated with family than church, for me. (Christmas Eve services being the big exception)

It's almost like tiny-scale folk religion. Like, holy week is holy week and easter is easter, sure, but the traditions that have meaning to me are largely not like... Liturgical. On the afternoon before Easter we hard boil two dozen eggs. Get out eight mugs and line them up in two rows on the counter, with paper towels under them. Mete out water and vinegar and little dye pills, bend the wire egg grabber. One each of each color, plain, and then we get experimental. Clear wax crayon, color gradients, double exposures. On Easter morning we had egg hunts, but now we're all adults and for the most part we just eat the blessed things. About half a dozen of them are for egg salad. This is nonnegotiable. Dad's recipe. We eat egg salad sandwiches and watch Ben-Hur. This IS the Easter tradition.

I was never a doubtful child because I enjoyed being Seventh Day Adventist for the most part. I didn’t like not being able to eat certain things or go to friends birthday parties on Saturdays but by the time I was in middle school I didn’t really care about any of that. Something happened in and around the 6th grade— I don’t know if it was the change in demographic of my church which comes with a change in beliefs and practices, but i remember getting like 20x more religious somehow. I became vegetarian in the 7th grade, I decided to be homeschooled for 8th grade, I (for a short period of time) started dressing a little more modestly.

I do remember that i had an older friend form church — I think in the 7th grade she started teaching me how to use my violin which turned into weekly Bible and Ellen g white literature study. I think at the time she was in college— definitely out of high school (homeschool) so at least 20. I think that made me more religious too— feeling connected to someone and being told how I’m “different” and really kind of one of the good ones (™️) from someone who was young and beautiful and kind. She used to tell me that when she was young (so long ago) she had “lost her way” and done something bad (so bad she wouldn’t say what it was and didn’t think it was funny to guess) and then somehow in that realized she needed to come back to god and get rebaptized. I was always wondering what that was.

But yes I think that’s what it was— the church got kind of conservative overall with all these new people. We had youth meetings where we would be told that somehow drums and the vibrations / frequencies were related to Satan and the end times. How the dinosaur bones were propaganda. There was a sermon where I know I wasn’t listening because I and most other people knew it was crazy , but there was this PowerPoint slide up with 2 pictures crossed out: a pile of flour and the pope. And if you don’t know we think the pope is the antichrist. Or at least I did.

I wasn’t like 100% down with everything— a big part of adventism is arguing in Bible study so no one’s expecting you to agree with everything— but I was in as deep as I could allow because I wanted to be. My family was well liked, I had a lot of friends, and there were a lot of people who really liked me and loved to tell me I was Better than the other kids (sorry to break it to them). So it was like not even a problem— I was pretty happy like that.

Oh, it's alright! I think I haven't talked about it in a good while lol.

I definitely don't blame you, I can see why and I might keep that in for the modern-day story [SDA] [again, might. I just have to see where my writing takes me.]

While on the one hand, I do like the idea of them reuniting and being all lovey-dovey, on the other hand, however, the idea of them being bitter exes or in a love-hate relationship is very tempting as well, for multiple reasons.

I'll keep brainstorming on it but man it has been a while since I've checked on that blog. It did help me out with my comic-making skills a lot tho! One day I'll get back to that rhythm, just have to get through school hell :') [there are always breaks I guess!]

to me: i:ll blog a little, but roughly i:m doing 'OK;' i just finished reading my 4th book this month (scientology: a new slant on life, people like us, boogiepop vs imaginator part 1, boogiepop vs imaginator part 2); i bought my mom chairs for our porch, and a blender since she was dropping hints (the chairs were what led me to reading again -- i don:t spend as much time online anymore since i started leaning heavily into my disconnection policy, so i started replacing that time with reading outdoors / unhealthy amounts of exercise); i:ve been slowly exploring leesburg after memorizing most of the roads/stores via google maps, and an old online friend from ~8 years ago has been helping me with going out every few weeks; reconnecting with leesburg/lawn-chairs made me feel 'in alignment' with yuko (chainsaw man yuko), and incidentally exploring leesburg led me to a conversation about faygo (@ a dollar tree) which led me to discovering i really like insane clown posse and have been having fun going through their albums (riddle box is my favorite); i returned to the SDA church on a whim and haven:t freaked out yet (i:m not a christian, but i just feel like it:s important for me to enmesh with the adventists, a little) -- incidentally, i feel closer to chiral faith than ever; i think i might be over a lot of my anger towards my ex, too; --so: overall, i:m doing ok; my life is simple, and dull (i:m basically a housekeeper), and i don:t really make art anymore, but i:ve been pretty ok lately.

there:s still some bad; i:m struggling with a few things, but i don:t want to share them; those are thoughts i only want to offer to boogiepop and my prayers.
