#evil marceline was such a treat

in both universes we've seen them, pb + marceline have a clear 'tension' in which the latter often initiates. marceline does things specifically to get under pb's skin, be it heckling her for coming off a tad egotistical or (the star) reducing one of her troops into a quick meal. but in the same vein it's a flirtatious taunting.
the more things change the more they stay.

Okay, I saw someone say that Nimona, while being good representation, “didn’t take the big step forward in queer rep that everyone says it did”.
That is wrong. So wrong, my dude.
Yes, an explicit and open queer relationship in children’s cartoons is not new, per ce. Hell, just this year, two popular kids’ cartoons had the main character in an open, adorable, plot-based queer romance. But this is different for a few reasons.
Reason number one, it isn’t left in suspense. Yes, they had that split for three odd weeks, but they started the film as a couple. One of the very first scenes is them together as a couple, Ambrosius saying he loves Ballister, them holding hands, Ballister leaning on Ambrosius’ shoulder. Ambrosius says he loves Ballister three times during the film, and none of them are any more than halfway in. It’s very clear, from their very first interaction, that they are an established relationship, which isn’t something I’ve seen...at all in other animation.
Secondly, they are the plot. Ambrosius not believing Ballister, Ambrosius cutting off Ballister’s arm, Ballister trying to get the video to Ambrosius - this is what drives the plot. In any other children’s animation with queer relationships, the relationship is not the main focus. Even The Owl House, which is so amazing with its constant representation, would still make sense if Luz and Amity never happened. But Nimona’s plot wouldn’t make sense without Ballister and Ambrosius’ relationship. It, quite simply, can’t be erased. It could work as a friendship, yes, but that’s the point. They could have just been two close friends that fell on opposite sides of a fight, but they weren’t. They were two lovers that fell on opposite sides of a fight.
Thirdly, they aren’t sanitized for “family viewing”. An emerging trend in children’s animation is to only have mlm relationships as fathers to make them seem more “family friendly”. With the exception of Kipo, there really isn’t many tv shows or films that places light upon an mlm relationship. And if it does, it'll be a teen relationship because teenagers being queer tends to come across as less “dirty” and more “innocent”. But Goldenheart is none of these things. They are adults without the mollifying aspect of having a family. And on top of that, they fight. They wield swords and they get bloody and they shoot at things and get angry and yell. They aren’t “clean” and “innocent”.
As well as this, they are in a film. Films are far more accessible than tv shows. You have to watch twenty seven episodes before Lumity in toh is canon. Troy kisses Benson on the eleventh episode of Kipo. And there are two hundred and eighty three episodes of Adventure Time before Marceline and Bonnie kiss. But with a film, the queerness is much more forward - especially in Nimona, where it’s literally the second scene. Animated films hardly ever display queer relationships, but Nimona did.
Finally - they aren’t perfect. I don’t know about you, but three weeks of thinking your boyfriend/maybe ex is a murderer? Doesn’t sound like a healthy few weeks to me. I have only seen big relationship arguments portrayed in straight relationships in cartoons - think Star Vs The Forces Of Evil - whereas queer relationships either have the massive fight prior to being canonically gay - She Ra - or have conflict, not arguments, that are dealt with quickly - Dead End/The Owl House. But Goldenheart? Goldenheart suffers. Their relationship is pushed to such extreme boundaries as for them to be pretty much exes throughout most of the movie. And yet, they are clearly healthy, happy and very much in love at the end.
TL;DR - Nimona is amazing with the queer representation, and it is a milestone for LGBTQ+ cartoons. Not only is the relationship romantic for the entire movie, the plot is driven by Ambrosius and Ballister’s sort-of-break-up. In short, they are treated the same way straight people are. They have flaws, they have massive arguments, they have plot importance, they have backstory. They are in love. And that’s what matters more than anything else.

You know, it is kinda funny sometimes…. I joined the Adventure Time fandom around mid-way through Season 5. And from what I remember back then, most of the popular headcanons and theories around the origin of Ice King’s Magic Crown played a very similar tune. Some sort of Evil Ice Wizard creating a Magical Artifact that will allow him to live forever, or maybe just create a legacy of Evil Ice Wizards that will freeze the world. You know, kinda on the same vibe Farmworld Finn was going on about when he was under the Crown’s influence.
Tumblr media
But then ‘Evergreen’ came out, and revealed not only that the Crown’s origins lay in a time period much more unique and strange than the Generic Medieval Fantasy a lot of people were imagining
Tumblr media
But that the thing standing at the very core of the Magic Crown’s Curse was not just simple Villainous Hubris or an intentional desire to cause Icy Evil - instead the theme surrounding the Crown’s origin and its Curse is the Cycle of Parental Abuse.
Urgence Evergreen is not your run-of-the-mill Evil Wizard, and he wasn’t trying to create a Curse, but he was an Extremely Bad Dad. I mean, he didn’t consider himself a dad at all - but it’s clear that he raised Gunther since he hatched and the Dinosaur saw him as a parental figure. The only parental figure he had in his entire life. And through Gunther’s entire life, it’s clear Evergreen was emotionally distant and deprived him of the familial connection Gunther needed and he just constantly belittled and insulted him
Tumblr media
And generally showed very little concern for both his emotional and physical well-being.
Tumblr media
He didn’t even do the thing he was supposed to be doing with Gunther, which was teaching him Magic.
And yet Gunther still loved him like a father, and craved his admiration and approval, and wanted to be just like him.
Tumblr media
And we see this Cycle of Abuse happen a bit more literally before we even get to the Crown. Gunther clearly loves his pet Nina a lot, but sometimes he channels his own frustrations with Evergreen at her - mirroring the way Evergreen treats him. Because this is all he ever knew.
Tumblr media
And so, when the Crown granted Gunther his ‘deepest truest Wish’ and made him just like his beloved Master Evergreen, he became a perpetually-angry madman shouting nothing but ‘Gunther no!’.
Tumblr media
Because for all of Evergreen’s pride in his role as the Ice Elemental and his aspirations of being the one to Save the World, this is what he always was in the eyes of his son. Add to it the fact that he never taught Gunther any Magic Basics that could help him control the Crown… Evergreen’s abuse of Gunther literally became a Curse.
One that has not only hurt Gunther and backfired on Evergreen… but keeps hurting any poor soul who comes across the Crown. Generations after Master Evergreen was left as barely even a distant memory, his abuse is still responsible for turning others into Hurt People Who Hurt Others.
And then the Crown ends up with Certified Dad Simon Petrikov.
Tumblr media
And, now, Simon’s Good Dad Qualities did not, like, automatically negate the Crown’s influence. But.. he tried, he always tried. He knew what he needed to do to be the parental figure Marcy needed, and even when the Crown made it hard for him, he tried to fight through it and do his best.
Tumblr media
And even when he totally lost himself to the Crown, he couldn’t stand the thought of hurting her.
Tumblr media
But also.... it's important to remember that Marceline is not the only child-figure Simon raised while under the influence of the Magic Crown.
Tumblr media
Ice King’s relationship with Gunter the Penguin was always kind of a fatherly thing - I mean, that is why he named him the same name he’s given to Marceline, the name that’s ingrained in the Crown as the name of the Evergreen-Clone’s son. But in earlier seasons in the show, it was very… fraught. Ice King would shift rapidly from being very caring, affectionate and sweet towards his lil’ Gunter
Tumblr media
To very Evergreen-esque moments of callousness, neglectfulness and just… venting his own frustrations at his misery as unnecessary anger and cruelty towards the penguin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Misery that is, of course, caused as a result of the Curse of the Magic Crown. The Curse that only came into being through Evergreen’s mistreatment of his own Gunther. The Curse that is also subconsciously pushing Ice King into being just like Evergreen. It torments Ice King and ‘teaches’ him to vent this torment out on others - but especially at his Gunter. Simon’s natural nurturing instincts were still trying to fight through it, the same way he did with Marceline, but it was not always enough. It's important to note that Ice King still always gave Gunter the Penguin more genuine care and affection than friggin’ Evergreen ever gave to Gunther the Dinosaur, but it's just as important to also note that the Curse still affected his treatment of Gunter in all kinds of harmful ways.
But as the show went on, and Ice King started to become more stable, and started to get the help and support he needed… he also became a better father to his Gunter. Like, without Betty’s interference, Simon was not able to overcome the Curse as a Dementia Metaphor, or the Curse as an Addiction Metaphor… But as for the Curse as a Cycle of Abuse Metaphor? Ice King/Simon, through his strong pre-Crown parental side, and through his love for Gunter and his genuine desire to be a better parent - he was breaking the magical Cycle of Abuse that Evergreen started through entirely mundane means.
He grew past his bad-tempered outburst and bouts of neglectfulness, and just became this extremely doting and loving and sweet father to Gunter.
Tumblr media
And so, next time a Reset Crown lended into the clutches of a Gunther, ready to grant a new Wish, the Gunther once again chose to become just like his beloved father figure
Tumblr media
but rather than an irrationally angry madman who cannot say anything but “Gunther, no!”… The very first words Ice Thing says are a reminder of how much he loves his Gunter. How much Gunter knows Simon loves him.
Tumblr media
And he just seems like this sweet, harmless and happily content silly lil Ice Wizard. Maybe not the person Ice King always was, but the person he was always trying to be. I mean, he literally achieved Ice King’s original goal of being happily married to a princess.
Tumblr media
But also just in a general sense, he’s happy and satisfied with his life and he’s not hurting anyone. And just like the original Curse is the legacy of Evergreen’s abuse, this is the legacy of Ice King/Simon’s attempts to do right by Gunter despite his struggles. He has broken the Curse and now it will never torment anyone ever again. Because, well, because Gunter seems to have fused with the Crown so it’s unlikely anyone else will ever be able to wear it. And if someone could, the ‘Curse’ that will be inflicted on them will not be nearly as destructive as Evergreen’s Curse.
(And let’s not forget that Simon’s Honest Attempt at Good Parenting didn’t just neutralize the Curse, it also neutralized a literal eldritch abomination. The Orgalorg Stuff isn’t directly related to the point I wanna make, but that’s also Pretty Cool)
Of course, we also know that although Ice Thing seems happy and content now, this status quo won’t last forever.
Tumblr media
I mean, a thousand years in the future is a long time for things to change. But also, maybe it’s very Thematically Appropriate that the person who seems to be responsible for Ice Thing’s degradation is Gibbon.
Tumblr media
Who is himself a result of a Whole Separate Series of Parental Issues.

ch4 ep 2 thanks Marax, and go fuck yourself
the group finally got to thier destination the old and abandoned circus, thier debate at home led them to take Izbun with them but they were thinking if it was a good idea, after all that freak would love to have him for his own. those thoughts went through thier heads and suddenly they heard someone fall they looked behind them and Peter was laying on the floor uncouncious, then Falia fell as well, then so did Marceline, hrom looked around as Izbun went up to them, seeing a dart in thier necks he knew what happened, and then he heard the last thing he wanted to hear. hrom fell as well. but hrom was diffrent he didn't close his eyes he was paralyesed insted of sleeping. they hear a voice.
Adam - well, i must say i always wanted to have a pixie
out of nowhere a net swung in Izbuns direction capturing him, he was then forced into a jar.
hrom saw as Adam was going away with Izbun, the only thing he managed to do was reach his hand in thier direction and squirm as he his hand fell on the ground motionless.
after what felt like hours the poison went away getting up from the floor hrom felt worried, and then he had to explain to his now awake friends where Izbun has gone to. when he did so tears started rolling down his face, as he broke down crying, he knew they shouldn't have brouht Izbun with them, no matter how much he told them that it would be fine they shouldn't have listened to him.
in this time Izbun has arrived at the circus and was currently listening to Adam arguing with his lover, just seconds ago they were making out but it was short lived, after his little parthner said something that actually angered Izbun as well "why do you always pretend to be a human, you aren't one, just be normal" by thier argument Izbun found out something important mr.Adam Circus was a mimicing slime, he used to actually know one so he knew a fair bit about them. when the other guy decided to get out of the room to leave adam alone, Adam started crying that was confusing he was a evil person why would he care so much, Izbun realized just who he was, he wanted to get out but if he just ran away how would he convince Adam to leave him be. he had to help him in some way. so he started to talk
Izbun - you know, the guy seems like a asshole
Adam - shut it, you don't knwo anything
Izbun - does he not know how your kind works?
Adam - the hell do you mean by that
Izbun - you copy the behaviour of the race you choose to, well, perfection, your kind has a rare gift that lets them chose who they want to be, you chose to be a human, therefore you should be treated and considered one because you just might as well be one.
Adam - what, wait you consider me human, even though i was terrible to you, and you know what i am, you still prefer to say i am one over being rude and ignorant?
Izbun - well that's what you want after all, he really should respect that and if he doesn't you can brake up
Adma - yeah, he should, and i should also stand for myself
Izbun - what is he anyway
Adam - he's a deamon. Marax
Izbun - oh, uh oh
Adam - what do you mean uh oh
Izbun - he is kind of on hroms side
Adam - WHAT
Izbun - he was the one to cure him of the curse, after he killed a dragon in a moutain he was cursed by hunger
Adam - HE'S THE GUY WHO KILLED MY DRAGON
Izbun - your dragon?
Adam - well yeah, i had one, i left him in a mountain so i could take him with me later, but i put a spell on him to punish anyone who tried to harm him
Izbun - oh god, you probably should not mention it to anyone else
after the short talk Marax came back and asked if Adam was "over it" at that Adam gladly said that he is breaking up with him and yelled at him to get out.
so he did and Marax went right to the others where he told them exactly where to go. in no time they raided the circus and took Adam and Izbun with them.
Izbun was kind of sorry for Adam when they decided to put him in ukal, a special asylum for dangerous spellcasters.
He decided to visit him ever so often, and that seemed to help him recover a lot as the doctors said. but he wouldn't be let out for the amout of dangerous and forbbiden animals the circus had in it. in the end though he was rather fine with his new state.

i went insane rambling on the tags of this post about princess bubblegum and ran out of space so i copy pasted it here so i could finish writing. under read more bc idk
tbf i dont think i would say pb is like... Good. well actually. wait. im gonna go on a rant.
i think it depends on how we classify ''good''. what makes someone a good person? what makes someone evil? thoughts or actions‚ past or present‚ etc. i honestly dont think i can firmly say bubblegum is either good or evil. shes one of the few truly morally grey characters ive seen. like
no matter what you think makes someone good or bad she has most certainly been bad in every single way. and also good in every single way. hm.
. she is not a naturally empathetic person. thats not to say she doesnt care about people‚ she does‚ and sometimes those feelings influence her actions a Lot even if she doesnt realize it. but also‚ even when it comes to those she cares about‚ emotional empathy is a struggle. shes the definition of thoughts over feelings 100% scientific brain facts and logic. she is Very egoistical‚ she likes being in control and having power over people (not bc shes power hungry per se but bc thats the best way to keep control over others. shes Logical. and if she has control than nothing can go wrong)‚ she likes not being questioned and she did and still does often disregard other peoples rights and privacy to get what she wants and to be on top/have control over them. she does care‚ about a bunch of different things in a bunch of different ways‚ but caring about someone/multiple ppl and naturally feeling empathy are different things. she needs to make an effort to take other peoples feelings into consideration‚ and while not feeling empathy and etc obviously has absolutely NOTHING to do with morality‚ the thing about pb is that most of the time she does not make that effort‚ and actively does things that hurt other people for her own gain‚ or for Science™ or the Kingdom™. she doesn't care ab how other people feel or their privacy and she does like government crimes and mass murders and a surveillance state about it. she cares deeply about her people for example‚ but not really them as individuals‚ shown when she likes fucking kills them or put cameras on their bodies etc. shes more worried about them surviving than their autonomy. she cares about finn‚ but specially at the beginning she treats him more as an asset than anything‚ and does shit like implant a gps on him without him knowing. and while shes Always liked control and been all logical alpha brain and shit‚ and struggled with sympathy‚ she used to care a lot lot more. or better, she used to Allow herself to care and to love and to feel‚ she build herself a family because she felt lonely and she loved marceline deeply. but like the post and the show said she kept being hurt and she needed to protect an entire kingdom alone‚ which meant repressing all that to fucking hell and back. so she slowly just build up and let her ''no sympathy no feelings only Facts And Science'' side rule until she forgot anything else
and thats how we meet bubblegum in the show: manipulative and head of a dictatorship and with no one she truly cared about close to her, doing awful awful things and not taking time to remember about others. what are morals. being just so very fucked up
like
your thoughts and brain and whatever do not make you evil. your actions do. but her actions are terrible and she does the things she does bc sympathy and caring do not come naturally for her, but being waaay to super mega smart and wanting control Do and she has hardened and isolated herself enough that she has no one to like, pull her out of that. keep her in check. remind her to make an effort to consider other people.
in the show, we see her begin to try and be good again. by letting other people in, by letting herself feel, letting herself be a Person outside of being a Princess and a Ruler and a Scientist, she begins to make that effort again. and bc shes like a war criminal that comes not only in the form of apologizing for those who are or were close to her and she was awful too, but also destroying the surveillance system and stop spying on people. she tries to begin having good actions. she realizes what she had been doing, and feels guilty about it (for... probably the first time honestly. she was very indifferent about it before. everything she did was the most logical thing to do, after all.) i say shes still firmly morally grey tho bc while shes no longer like Evil, she still. goes back to spying on people and etc. shes still Like That, just toned down. all that show that while shes getting Better shes still not good, and probably will never be, because thats just how she is. crazy scientist manipulative pink candy princess. shes the best
she was also never truly evil tho bc even at her worse her actions were not to cause harm! Most Of The Time! and when they were to cause harm it wasnt just bc she was idk a sadist or something, it was with a goal (usually the neutral goal of Science or the good goal of protecting her people) in mind! Theyre still not excusable tho bc they did cause harm! a lot! to a bunch of different people! and like she does care a lot she loves marceline she loves finn she loves netty and she loved shoko but she just doesnt KNOW how to love people and all of those feelings are like behind a brick wall in her brain so she just tries to science everything out and it doesnt always work. like ARGH such a good character. such a good morally grey character. i ❤ bubblegum. i love watching the show and flinching at all the terrible shit she does and being like jesus christ bubblegum what the fuck
anyways here are more good pb analysis

While drawing more people’s kickstarter rewards for the past couple hours I’ve been rewatching Adventure Time from season 2 on, it’s weird when you go back to the early years of a long running show and everything feels so off and unpolished yet, but in many ways more interesting. They really weren’t sure what they were gonna do with this show. You can tell it probably wasn’t intended to get as lore-heavy as it did. Weird to see Ice King treated as a villain, Marceline ambiguously evil, and Princess Bubblegum not yet a morally grey mad scientist.

What your favourite Distant Lands episodes?
ok i’ve thought about it and my personal ranking is this:
1. Together Again- I might be biased bc Finn and Jake are my favorite characters, but i think this special was a fitting, sweet end for them. Not to get pretentious but there’s a very specific way that adventure time has always treated the concept of death and idk if i can articulate it but. it always hits. also i think this episode was the funniest of the four
2. Obsidian- this one was really cute. it was so so so nice to have pb and marceline explicitly dating and getting to see how their relationship actually functions. the music banged as usual, and we even got more Marcy lore. great stuff
3. BMO- fun BMO times you gotta love fun BMO times. the setting in this one was really unique. I don’t have much to say but I liked this episode fine
4. Wizard City- ehhhh I don’t hate this one or anything but i dont love how they treated og Peppermint Butler’s character. they made him way too evil imo. but at least my main man abracadaniel was there

It Came From the Nightosphere Review
And we kick off season two with a Marceline episode! Marcy usually gets left out of season premiers and finales. It’s also Rebecca Sugar’s first time storyboarding an episode, being promoted from her first season job as a storyboard revisionist. Sugar is one of the most popular writers on Adventure Time and in the cartoon industry as a whole. She helped bring the series, and Marceline as a character, to new emotional heights here. Seriously, this episode absolutely slaughters season one’s offerings. Also credit to veteran storyboarder Adam Muto who co-wrote the episode with Sugar.
Marceline opens up to Finn surprisingly quickly after just becoming friends with him. She is a little embarrassed, but sings a sad song about her daddy issues. They could have had one more Finn and Marceline episode to develop their relationship first, but I can see Finn being a safe place for her to open up. The Fry Song, the first of Rebecca Sugar’s famous songs, is an iconic banger. Marcy sings about her dad eating her fries. I think this incident is supposed to be representative of her dad’s self centered behavior. Her father, despite not needing to eat, ate her daughter’s fries when she was still a human and needed to eat. This happened right after the apocalypse when food, especially treats like fries, were rare.
Rebecca’s original draft of the song, which you can find Rebecca singing on Youtube, was much sadder. Marceline sings about her father leaving her. Considering we see a very young Marceline with her mother in “Everything Stays” and “Obsidian”, we know he was not around then. Either he left her to handle his duties in the Nightosphere, or Elise banished him to protect Marcy from him without ever telling her.
Marceline’s poodle Schwabl is seen in Marceline’s house for the first time. I wish Schwabl appeared more often, especially in episodes that are set in Marcy’s house like “Memory of a Memory”, “Marceline’s Closet”, “I Remember You”, and “Ketchup”. The writers have admitted they kept forgetting to put him in episodes. They usually don’t forget details like that! I do prefer Phil Rynda’s more zombie-like versions of Schwabl in his concept art.
We unfortunately don’t ever see many flashbacks of a younger Marceline interacting with her dad (outside of very brief scenes in “Memory of a Memory” and “Marcy & Hunson”, as well as the probably mostly non canon “Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook”), but you can tell Marceline has a history of longing for and not getting her dad’s approval and understanding. I really wonder if this episode is the first time she’s seen her father since the flashback in “Memory of a Memory" or not. That was a thousand years ago, so probably not? Marcy’s song bums Finn out. In his naivety, he summons Hunson Abadeer, hoping for a reconciliation. He has good intentions, but it is disrespectful to force this reunion onto his friend. He definitely would not have pulled that crap after his run ins with Martin Mertins.
Marceline's dad, Hunson Abadeer, is actually not named yet. He is referred to as “Lord of Evil” in the credits. His design is great and so is his voice, like Demon Cat, another creepy villain. But, Hunson easily dethrones him as the best villain so far. It’s unbelievable he didn’t recur more. I would have been trying to give him an episode once a season like they did with Lemongrab and Magic Man for a while.
Abadeer is voiced by Martin Olson. Martin (wait was Finn’s dad Martin named after Olson?) is a personal friend of Pendleton Ward’s. He was a writer on “Phineas and Ferb” and is the father of Marceline’s voice actress, Olivia Olson. How often do people get to play characters that have the same relationship in the story as in real life? Olivia described the voice sessions with her dad as a lot of fun. This is the second teenage goth chick who has daddy issues with her evil father that Olivia plays. But, the Lord of Evil is much more intimidating than Dr. Doofensmirtz.
We learn some new bits and pieces of Marcy’s mysterious backstory. Marceline is half demon and her axe bass is a family heirloom that she repurposed into her iconic axe bass. The axe being an heirloom, and a line from Hunson in “Daddy’s Little Monster” implies that Hunson had parents. Even though its canonicity is in question, “The Enchiridion/ Marcy’s Super Secret Scrapbook” (written by Martin and Olivia-full circle!) mentions Hunson being one of the primordial monsters seen in “Gold Stars”. Could Golb or one of the monsters be the one to have created and/or raised Hunson ? Did one of them make the axe? Or, maybe it came from Marcy’s mom’s side of the family. This episode doesn’t reference Marceline’s mom, or explain how her demon side fits into her status as a vampire. It leaves us with many questions about her backstory, some to be answered later.
Marceline is understandably upset at Finn’s actions. Hunson Abadeer steals Marcy’s axe bass and goes to suck the souls of Ooo. I like how this gives Finn and Marceline the same goal of tracking down Abadeer, but divergent motivations. Finn cares about saving the denizens of Ooo from Hunson’s soulsucking. Marceling cares about getting her axe bass back. Marceline doesn’t give a shit about any of the people her dad soul sucked. It’s funny how she just finds Hunson sucking Finn’s soul out “embarrassing”. She’s cold. I’m glad that her moral code is still shaky as being friends with Finn for a few weeks or months should not be enough to make her that much more empathetic.
The episode has multiple continuity nods. It features multiple returning characters, species, and locations. The writers said they did this to help make the episode feel big and important, which it is. The show is finally getting more use out of its supporting cast for cameos, like Lumpy Space Princess’s great bit in the climax. Hunson’s encounters with the soft people, Marauders, and penguins are all funny.
Hunson calls Gunter the most evil creature he’s ever encountered. This works well as retroactive foreshadowing for Orgalorg. Ice King has a hilarious cameo too. I wish this wasn’t the only interaction between Ice King and Hunson Abadeer. They both have deep connections to Marceline’s backstory and are father figures to her. Hunson does not suck Ice King’s soul. Does he know who he is? Simon is the one who summoned him to take care of Marceline after he left her in “Everything Stays”, afterall.
Finn and Marceline catch up with Hunson Abadeer. After sucking more souls, he grows to be giant. This allows for a very dynamic fight between Finn and the Lord of Evil. This is Finn’s most powerful enemy yet, but he is still determined to defeat him. After Finn stabs him, Hunson peels his face open and we see what he looks like on the inside. Circumcised Hunson’s head’s design looks even more rad, especially with the soul sacs. Finn slices the tentacle he’s holding onto. Gory stuff!
As Finn and the axe bass fall, Marcy skips over Finn to catch her bass. Finn should have been killed falling from that height! Finn plays Marceline’s song to distract Hunson Abadeer. This humiliates Marceline. Hunson finally feels bad when he sees how he has hurt her, showing that he does care. He and Marcy are able to reconcile. Finn did end up helping in the end! Finn uses this as an opportunity to slice open Hunson’s soul sacks to free the souls and then banish Hunson back to the Nightosphere. Finn has a great line calling Abadeer a “sick freak”. Finn recognizes how disturbing that guy is! He says he’ll see him in the Nightosphere, which works as good foreshadowing for season four.
Marcy is rightfully upset at Finn for violating her privacy. I’ll let it slide since Finn did it to save Ooo. Finn’s error was putting Ooo in danger by summoning him in the first place. She’s also mad that Finn stabbed him. Earlier, she wasn’t offended at Finn’s aim to kill Hunson. She just told Finn he literally can’t kill him because he’s deathless. Now, we see Marcy showing some care for her dad’s wellbeing. An emotionally exhausted Marceline swings her axe bass towards Finn. She almost cut off his arms!
This is the first episode to not have Jake play a major role. He gets no lines. I like how Finn suddenly having a pocket isn’t explained until the last second. He farts in Finn’s pocket, a perfect ending. Jake’s still so scared of Marceline that he has to hide in there! I love how this lets Finn get to go on an adventure with a different character. At least Jake no longer thinks Finn’s under Marceline’s spell. He must have found out that he didn’t really kill Marcy in “Henchman” off screen.

Its been a while since i caught up on AT... what are the 4 bubbline songs that you mentioned in your post about monster?
Hi Anon!
That’s a good question, actually, I’ve been wanting to make a post since “Monster” was revealed at SDCC. Probably gonna wait with a proper post until after Obsidian now, in case we get more - fingers crossed!
To answer your question: okay, so some of these are more implicitly Bubbline than anything but I still count them.
1. I’m Just Your Problem - “What Was Missing”
This is the big one, Rebecca Sugar’s angsty anthem. An iconic rock ballad from an iconic episode. I don’t need to elaborate but I kinda wanna lol I love this with all that I am.
Sorry I don't treat you like you're perfect Like all you little loyal subjects do Sorry I'm not made of sugar Am I not sweet enough for you?
Tumblr media
2. Francis Forever - “The Music Hole”
This is where we get into technicalities. It isn’t as obviously Bubbline as no. 1 and just covered by AT, originally written by MItski. But like, come on, in the context of the show it fits their dynamic.
I don't need the world to see That I've been the best I can be, but I don't think I could stand to be Where you don't see me
3. Slow Dance With You - “Marcy & Hunson”
Written by Evil for AT and based on personal (very much gay) experience. Again, it isn’t as explicitly addressed to Bonnie as no. 1 but by that ep they’re basically together anyway. Plus, Hynden Walch does the vocals.
I just wanna slow dance with you (Slow dance) Why don't you take the chance? I've got the moves I'd like to prove I wanna slow dance with you
Tumblr media
4. Happy Ending Song - Extra content
The most obscure one. It was originally released on YouTube for Olivia Olson’s birthday, it’s a Marceline take on the Island Song. It’s about “someone kinda special” and the video features footage of Marcy and Bonnie, ending with the two of them riding off into the sunset. I’m only slightly exaggerating.
Run away with me To a cavern shaped like home Where we'll build our own forever And never dance alone
That’s pretty much the state of their relationship as of Obsidian if the trailer is any indication, including their cavern shaped like home. And I am hoping we’ll get at least one more, but at the very least we now also have:
5. Monster - “Obsidian”
I know we'll never grow old together 'Cause you'll never grow old to me You're the pink in my cheeks and I'm scared 'Cause it means I'm a little bit soft

Note
i would say that Vriska would not respect Marceline in the slightest; Marceline is fairly passive and has no interest in advancing her ambitions or doing much besides hanging out and doing her music, and Vriska is so laser focused on her protagonist narrative that she's got a history of blindly antagonizing people she percieves as letting themselves become side characters. marceline would go 'dude chill' and it would just set vriska off even more and go on a rant about how chilling is WEAK
vriska would treat marceline pretty much the same way she treats dave, which is to say, with little to no respect
but she might admire marceline’s percieved evil characteristics
maybe she’ll think marceline really let herself go or something

Cartoons Relationships Are Terrible
Back in the day of cartoons, the romantic subplots were simple and yet very heartwarming to see such as
Katara and Aang from Avatar: The Last Airbender
Tumblr media
Phineas and Isabella from Phineas and Ferb
Tumblr media
But now, modern cartoons are taking romantic subplots into heavier territories that something that some live-action shows would do. While it does sound interesting that making relationships more realistic and complex but the way that has been written in the previous decade is pretty bad. The writers try to make romance relatable to the audience but fail on doing so such as making likable characters to really cringy and awful people, shoving down our throats of how cute it is and having the romantic subplot more focus than the actual plot.
Adventure Time and Regular Show
So you must be wondering why I put Adventure Time and Regular Show together instead of separate categories. The thing about these two shows is they used to have bad romantic subplots but as the show progresses, they really did it well and I have to say it did better than most cartoons that failed to do which I’ll talk about later.
For Adventure Time, Finn and Flame Princess broke up in “Frost and Fire” due to him deceiving her by having FP fight Ice King/Simon Petrikov for his amusement
Tumblr media
After their break, he tries to rekindle his romantic feelings for Princess Bubblegum and thinks age is just a number in “Too Old”. However, it doesn’t end up too well that she has people to watch over and that’s when he realized that he really did donk up with Flame Princess.
Tumblr media
Although he apologized to FP in “Earth and Fire” to her it didn’t fully restore their relationship and Finn still had romantic feelings for her and Princess Bubblegum.
Tumblr media
Thankfully, Finn matures in later seasons.
Finn realized it’s better for him to be friends with Princess Bubblegum
Tumblr media
He then fully apologized and realized what he has done wrong to Flame Princess and she tells him that he really matured and hang out by playing guess who and rapping in “Bun Bun”
Tumblr media
and Princess Bubblegum, and Marceline. They both finally reconcile at the end of “Varmints” and start to hang out more which develops their relationship from being platonic to romance.
Tumblr media
For Regular Show, in “Steak Me Amadeus' ' Mordecai asked Margaret to be his girlfriend and although she would like that, she can’t because she got accepted into college which broke his heart.
Tumblr media
It didn’t last when he’s been reunited with CJ in “New Years Kiss”.
Tumblr media
As the show progresses, the two become a couple but then things get complicated when Margret returns. It made things awkward between CJ, Mordecai, and Marget like CJ always gets jealous and runs away when she sees Mordecai and Margret together.
Tumblr media
By the end of season 6, he dumps CJ in front of everyone in Muscle Man's wedding.
Tumblr media
Like Adventure Time, Mordecai and Margret hangout and realized they should stay as friends in “Just Friends”
Tumblr media
While Eileen and Rigby become a couple.
Tumblr media
Now it’s time to talk about other cartoons shows and their romantic subplot problem
Steven Universe
Steven Universe relationships can sometimes be well written but most of the time can handle poorly.
Such as Lars and Sadie were starting to develop their relationship in “Joking Victim” however it repeats itself throughout three seasons until the end of season 4 where Lars develops. Then there’s Sadie trapping him and Steven on the island in “Island Adventure” so he won’t have to leave and they don’t resolve and don’t even mention it ever again in later seasons. All they show was Sadie scar and that’s it
Tumblr media
In “Steven Universe: Future”, Sadie and Lars didn’t get together and she’s now with Shep and they did it off-screen. So throughout the whole thing with Lars and Sadie, they don’t get together. The show kept teasing it and they might get together in the future but the writers just said screw it, let's have her date a nonbinary while Lars goes on a space adventure. It feels like a waste of seeing those two characters that the show keeps showing them together and not have them become a couple. Unlike SvTFoE, Shep just came out of nowhere with no proper introduction and doesn’t establish they and Sadie's relationship and it’s really bothersome!
Tumblr media
Connie and Steven's relationship was good for the first four seasons. It was really had good chemistry and she was a good partner for him
Tumblr media
then season 5 came in and it kinda got ruins by after Steven escape from Gem Homeworld and coming back to Earth, it starts off with Connie leaving Steven with lion and never to be seen for a month according to “Keven Party”. The Steven and Connie arc was really bad like why was it dragged for five episodes? The whole thing could’ve been resolved in one episode by having them talk about their feelings like how “Mindful Education” and “Full Disclosure” did by they talk about their emotions instead of running away.
Tumblr media
Then in “Gemcation”, Steven the most important thing to him is Connie's relationship than worrying about Lars and the Off Colours' safety. That has to be the dumbest thing I’ve heard in my life and I can’t believe Rebecca and the Crewniverse have written it like that.
Tumblr media
Then there’s Ruby and Sapphire. I’ll be honest, the relationship feels like old Disney love stories like Cinderella, Seven Dwarfs, and Sleeping Beauty and that’s not a compliment. In “The Answer”, after they accidentally fused, they escape and wander Earth that caused them to fall in love which kinda contradicts what Garnet said to Jamie about love, at first sight, isn’t good in “Love Letter”.
Tumblr media
In “Pink Diamond” Arc, the plot came to hold to make room for Ruby and Sapphire’s wedding.
Tumblr media
While it is revolutionary that they show an LGBT wedding live on television but as a narrative standpoint, it feels rushed. The reason for that is after that Blue and Yellow came in after the wedding. They were no build-up or anything, they just came. The reason why they did it so some countries can’t take it down due it the main story which is stupid. It’s nice they represent LGBT but why in the middle of a major story arc, that’s just sloppy.
Tumblr media
Voltron
So Voltron has a reputation of queerbaiting the audience that Shiro is gay and he has a boyfriend. The writers keep telling us on Twitter that they’ll show his boyfriend in season 7 but when it finally aired. It was terrible
The first time we saw Adam was a flashback but it was nothing, it was more friendship than romance.
Tumblr media
When he finally shows up in the present he dies. Shiro goes to the memorial and signs than that’s it.
Tumblr media
The writers really made a dumb move of hyping it up but they let us down by having him die. They try to make it up by having Shiro marrying some guy who has a very little screen in the final season. Similar to Regular Show with Mordecai marrying a batgirl but not dumb while Voltron trying to get brownie points for having LGBT rep.
Tumblr media
Lance and Allura were really forced. For six seasons, Allura was never interested in Lance and only saw him as a friend but in season 8, the two confessed their love for each even though there wasn’t any chemistry nor sign that they truly love each other and they insensitively become a couple for one date. I would’ve supported if their relationship was established back in season 2
Tumblr media
The Legend of Korra
The love triangle between was handled so poorly with bad timing, making characters look terrible, making things force and having it engage more than the plot.
For the first season, there was a love diamond. Bolin liked Korra, Korra likes Mako and Mako liked Asami and those two go out. Korra and Mako kissed which broke Bolin’s heart but he got over it but when Asami finds out when Korra was missing, she gets jealous. I understand that she was concerned about her relationship with Mako but during when Korra, the avatar that is missing while Equalis are on the move? That’s not the right moment to get jealous when Republic City is gonna be under attack but of course, Mako and Asami break and Korra gets in with Mako.
Tumblr media
In season 2, things get worse when the happy couple keep nagging and they break up
Tumblr media
Which he tries again with Asami
Tumblr media
After Korra got her memories back but forgot breaking up with Mako, she asked him if it was bad however though he lied and everyone judged him for that dick move, especially Asami who started to have feelings for him again. Thankfully they broke up because that was just an awful way to get someone back by having their mind erased.
Tumblr media
Also, Bolin was with Eska and it was abusive. Forcing him to be her man, changed his whole entire to match with hers and she forced him to marry her.
Tumblr media
What’s worst about it is no one is concerned about him being with her and instead they just laugh like it’s supposed to be funny. Being in an abusive relationship isn’t funny and I hate how the show treats it so. By the end, they just forgot the whole thing that ever happened and moved on with their lives.
Season 3 and 4 kept the romance to a minimum with Bolin x Opal and Jinora x Kai but there was one romantic relationship that had to happen with no hints or build up and it’s Korra x Asami. By the end of the series, they decided to go to the spirit together while holding hands and having their eyes glazed toward each other and they become a couple.
Tumblr media
While many of you may say that they hinted it since season 3, however, it looks like friendship. Blushing and writing to her isn’t enough to say they have feelings towards each other. That is what best friends do too. The creators even have to confirm that they are a couple and the comics showing their love while it’s nice and all but it would’ve been a lot better to show it either on streaming service or live television than buying volumes to see more of their pairing, it’s balderdash. Now it’s time to talk about a cartoon that has one of the worst romance I’ve ever seen in my entire life of watching shows.
Star vs The Forces of Evil
Star vs The Forces of Evil has one of the WORST romantic subplots I’ve ever watched, it is even worse than CW’s Arrowverse romance and that’s saying something. The romantic subplot makes Star and Marco look like terrible people that only care about each other more than other characters.
Jarco
Out of all ships in SvTFoE, Jarco has the most establishment than most others. Marco liked Jackie when he was little and it was bound to happen that those two will date. Ever since season 1, the relationship has been growing to platonic to a romantic couple in season 2.
Tumblr media
Their chemistry together worked well but then “Sophomore Slump”. When Marco finally went back to Earth, he was obsessed with Mewni and Star and he won’t stop talking about and he still wears the cape. When Jackie told him to stop obsessing over Mewni which he tries to do but it got the better to him by he still wears the cape when he was on his date with Jackie. It’s really BS when Marco said to Jackie “You’re my best friend” which ruined everything that it established since season 1 and this, of course, caused them to break up.
Tumblr media
Then he left Earth to go to Mewni the day after their break up. It’s a real shame that building up their relationship and giving Jacie character got shoved aside for Starco. Although she returns and meets up with him again I can’t help feeling that it just for fan service and being inclusive for Jackie being Bi
Tomstar
Before the show started, Star and Tom were a couple but broke up due to him getting angry very easily and he wanted her back for the past two seasons luckily he stopped trying in “Mr. Candles Cares”. Their relationship becomes healthier when Tom gives Star space and that causes them to get back together and not have feelings for Marco anymore.
Tumblr media
Tom went through a lot of development for Star and it was a Mewni x Monster romance which is similar to Eclipsa and Globglor and it fits season 3. After rewatching it, it was pretty good. However, like Jarco, it was doomed from the start due to fans wanting Starco to be canon even though Tomstar was getting good. Also, Star was a terrible girlfriend to him.
Star never told him she kissed him, Marco did and when Tom confronted her about it, she got mad and tried to walk away.
Tumblr media
She mistreats him by nagging somethings, blowing on his face and angrily ask translate
Tumblr media
She declined on going on a vacation with him so she can be with Marco.
Tumblr media
Even his mom was afraid that she might break his heart again and her response “Everybody breaks up. That’s what teenagers do! Teenagers are dumb”. He went through so much development, changed his character and gave her so much but she never returned the favor. What an awful girlfriend
Kellco
With Tom and Star getting together (for now) it left Marco feels devastated that she’s dating someone and can’t get rid of his feelings for her while Kelly doesn’t want to be with Tad which she broke up with him. They both have something in common and start to hangout and their relationship has developed throughout season 3 and he’s with her more than Star.
Tumblr media
They became officially a couple as “breakup buddies” in “Kelly’s World” and it also when they did a perfect synchronization between two partners.
Tumblr media
So they’re pretty much a good pair but everything changed when the episode “A Boy and His DC-700XE” and did an off-screen break up. I don’t care who or what you write but never, ever a major plot point or character development offscreen. Kelly finds happiness when she leaves Tad but they break up with no explanation. It was glossed over like for five seconds and Marco doesn’t even care about their break up, what an a*hole.
Tumblr media
This relationship feels like a real waste of time and serves nothing to the plot nor character development, it was just there to waste time.
Starco
Before I talk about Starco, I used to ship it and I thought they were enjoyable characters. They would've worked in a relationship if things were written better and would have been the next Phineas and Isabella but sadly the writers messed up probably the easiest romance to write.
Season 1, Star and Marco became best friends. Although there weren't many romantic moments they still look pretty good together
Tumblr media
Season 2, As Star was happy for Marco that she’s finally dating Jackie, the girl he has had a crush on since preschool,
Tumblr media
on the other hand, she started to have feelings for him and she has trouble expressing it.
Tumblr media
In season 3, Marco started to have feelings for Star which caused him and Jackie to break up. Star told him that he wants nothing to do with him romantically in “Lint Catcher” and Tad told him that he does have feelings for her in “Lava Lake Beach” and he wasn't happy to find out about it at all. Then in Booth Buddies, they were held hostage by some freak until they kiss and they were completely in denial about having feelings for each other
Tumblr media
Then season 4 is when Starco becomes really sour. Star and Marco always keep saying that they don’t want to have feelings for each other and yet the writers have several episodes before the end of the series
Tumblr media
. They never showed any romantic interest until “Mama Star” where he confessed his feelings to her and then they kissed in the second last episode. By the finale, instead of either of them going back to their dimensions they went back to the World of Magic and held each other. It would’ve been more meaningful if they got together before the end of the  show.
Tumblr media
It’s very odd that they risk their lives for a relationship that just started. However, for some miracle, both of their worlds collide and become one with no explanation of what so ever.
Tumblr media
Starco could’ve been a lovely ship but the writers have to keep messing around with it till the very end.
Conclusion
Whenever a show presents a romance, I don’t mind as long it either fits with the narrative of the story it be fun but 2010s romantic subplots have been written very terribly by having it the main focus but sacrifice pacing and quality of the story, forcing characters to become a couple without establishing it enough in the show, and having characters go off for the sake of drama. Romantic stories can be simple and cute like Kim x Ron from Kim Possible, Suki x Sokka from Avatar: The Last Airbender and Starfire x Robin from Teen Titans and that’s all right. I do hope that this generation will fix what the previous decade of cartoons has failed to do.

Everything Stays
By Mila A.
Tumblr media
*names of some characters have been changed.
When my parents sat down my 8 year old self and told me that my hamster had died, I just looked at them. “Oh…” I said after a while. “Can I get a new one?”
I remember them looking at each other with a concerned and surprised look on their faces. “Aren’t you sad?” My dad asked. I gave a quick answer of “yes” and went back to my room.
When my dad pulled my 10 year old self out of the children center at my moms work to tell me that Grandpa had died, I just stood there. “Oh… can I keep playing here?” Is all I said. He said I couldn’t, and that we had to go see mom. My mom and dad hugged and cried in the dingy cafe kitchen at Golds Gym as I stood and watched, their grief beyond my understanding.
Death terrifies me. Not of it happening to me, but of what it does to the people around it. It changes everything, making a home in its witnesses' hearts forever. It’s helpless and powerful and controlling, and I hate it. I was intensely close with my grandpa, a rugged, bearded sailor with a beautiful house and farm in Long Island. He was a veteran and stuck to his intense beliefs about manhood and respect like they were life and death. I was close with him, but I refused to feel his death. I believed that to feel it would mean that I accepted it.
No death is easy, but I wish I could say Grandpa’s death was a simple one: a funeral, family bonding, a grieving period, and coming to terms with the death as you continue on with your life. I wish I could look back on my grandpa's death with only happy remembrance. I wish that his death hadn’t altered the entire course of my childhood. But death is death, afterall. Maybe there is no such thing as a simple one.
During the funeral process we were staying at Grandpa’s house with his wife, Edith, and their young daughter, Ella. Edith is not my biological grandma, and is a decent amount younger than Grandpa. Their daughter was only a few years older than me at the time of his death. Their house was beautiful, with intricate stone walls and high vaulted ceilings. During what came to be my last time in the house, I overheard a whispered conversation between my parents. Much of the conversation went over my head, but I heard mentions of calling a lawyer. I quickly scrubbed the conversation from my brain in hopes that nothing more would come of it. I didn’t tell anyone, not even my brother, in hopes that not talking about it would keep it in some far away land separate from reality. This didn’t work, however, and the legal battle started when we got home from the funeral. My parents didn’t talk about it with me, but I could tell it was serious. All I knew is that Edith had changed my grandpa’s will so that she got everything and we got nothing.
Edith had always been a confusing figure in my life. I couldn’t pinpoint an exact reason as to why, but I always felt watched when around her, as if she was looking for a reason to dislike me. It was her and her daughter, and my family and my grandpa. They weren’t a part of our family and never seemed interested in joining. I never knew anything about her life, what she did, or how she met my grandpa. I had no real reason to expect it, but I wasn’t at all surprised by her betrayal. I also never learned the reason behind it. Was she a scared widow who didn’t know how to get by without her husband, or were her actions completely based on greed? I never really cared about motive. No matter what, her actions were unredeemable to me.
The main attraction of this story happened three years later. The legal battle was in full swing until Edith and Ella went missing. The two had told friends they were going on a trip yet didn’t return. Two missing women and a dramatic legal battle? The media had a field day. News sites from all over began covering the disappearance with reporters contacting my aunt and mom daily. I was 13 at the time and had my first phone, which was my mom's old one. Since the phone number was still registered as hers, I received many of the phone calls from reporters trying to make sense of the situation. I even received a voicemail from Good Morning America inviting us onto the show.
Even three years after his passing, I still wasn’t feeling my grandpa’s death. I also wasn’t registering the fact that my family was. I remember telling my mom about the call from Good Morning America, expecting her to find it as crazy and exciting as I did. Instead, she just looked at me for a few seconds and told me to delete the voicemail. She didn’t reply to any reporters or read any of the articles being written about our family, and I didn’t understand why. I realized later that to my grieving mom and aunt, this wasn’t a crazy kidnapping story but instead a reminder of who they lost to death and greed.
The situation didn’t last very long. It was revealed that the two hadn’t been injured or kidnapped as many had speculated but were in hiding instead. They came back and the legal battle continued. Two years later Edith disappeared again but the media had grown bored at that point. She came back, wrote a poorly rated book about the situation, and continued with the legal battle. Another year and the battle was over. We won mostly everything, including the multi-million dollar house in Long Island and an expensive car.
It wasn’t until after the legal battle was done that I started to come to terms with what happened. My mom told me that we were selling his house and the farm he and Edith owned nearby. My heart sunk as I thought about all the memories that were being sold away. Some of my happiest memories come from Long Island, where he had lived. Grandpa’s house always smelled old, but not in a bad way. There were stone walls and animal furs and a grand piano. I would sit on his leather couches and reread Percy Jackson over and over again. I would get in everyone's way when the family made pancakes in the kitchen. I would wander the farm for hours, breathing in the sour smell of the horse stables. I’d chase barn cats around in hopes of befriending them. I’d sit and watch the ducks on the farm pond and create stories about which ones were in love with each other. That farm was my playground; it was all a young girl could want. Those were my years of childlike wonder.
Grandpa was in the background of each of these memories, completely inseparable from the best years of my life. He'd be reading a book next to me in his recliner, or in the farm with me feeding the animals. The loss of the house and farm is what made me realize how significant of a loss Grandpa’s death was. The fact that I would never be back to the foundation of my childhood reminded me that I would never again see the man who made my younger years so great in the first place.
For a while after this realization, I was bitter. I wondered if I would still be able to go to the house and farm if Edith hadn’t caused all the drama that she did. I resented her for causing division after my Grandpa's death instead of unity. Her selfishness made my family’s grief a spectacle, and her actions drew out the mourning process for years.
Out of everything, my journey towards acceptance was sparked by an Adventure Time song. It came after a 7 episode mini-series called “Stakes,” where the character Marceline thinks about her past and her life as an immortal vampire. Her attempt to cure her vampirism causes her past to come back and threaten the lives of her and her friends. After she goes on a journey of growth and reflection she defeats the evil and accepts the fact that the past is the past and that she will always be a vampire. The song, called “Everything Stays,” plays as the series closes. The chorus goes, “Everything stays, just where you left it / Everything stays, but it still changes / Ever so slightly, daily and nightly / In little ways, but Everything Stays.”
The message of the mini-series and song is that life goes on and changes, but the memories and happiness you once felt always remains. The song made me realize that treating my old happy memories with bitterness does nothing but tarnish them. My childhood happiness exists inside me in the memories I have of my grandpa. The events after my Grandpa’s death did force me out of that childhood wonder, but they didn’t make it disappear all together. “Everything Stays” portrayal of your memories as something tangible and constant inside of you made me choose to hold Grandpa close to my heart.
Death still scares me, and I don’t think there will ever come a time where it doesn’t. Processing my Grandpa’s death did show me I have more control than I thought I did, however. I can control how I hold the memories of those I’ve lost. My memories aren’t symbols of what I've lost, they’re reminders of what once was. They’re happy, innocent, and joyful, even if what happened afterwards was not.
My memories of my grandpa are strictly mine. Not Edith's, and not deaths. I decide what to do with them, and I choose to remember.
Acknowledgements: I’d like to thank Adventure Time for giving me a song that would come to represent the happy memories I have with my grandma, and I’d like to thank Grandpa for being such an inspirational and caring man. I could write 100 more pages about him and his character alone.

//Depends on what you mean by “deserves better”. As you probably already know, both this blog and @of-honor-and-theives (which follows this blog’s canon) are canon-divergent and heavily headcanon-based. A lot of the Sonic muses I rp as were satAM/Archie Sonic characters and I think we all know how...weird the early Archie Comics were. In terms of the canon portrayal, I’d have to say that Julie, Dulcy, Saffron, Sally, and even Geoffrey all deserved to be portrayed better and while Sally was able to be portrayed much better later on, I had to take some creative liberties in terms of Julie, Dulcy, Saffron and Geoffrey (especially Saffron).
//Below the cut, I’ll explain who deserves better in terms of ic portrayal. Just a warning that there are dark themes ahead.
//As for who deserves better in terms of ic portrayal, I’d have to go with Marshalia Abadeer, my Adventure Time OC over at @thesecretsister. While all of the character I play have had rough pasts (i.e. Marsha was bullied in Knothole, Bunnie was half-roboticized, Sally and Elias lost their father when he was banished into the Special Zone, Lillian over at @chicagohxart tried to kill herself twice, etc.), it’s still nothing compared to Marshalia’s story. Marshalia lost her mother and was separated from her older sister, Marceline, when she was 2. She has a scar that goes over her left eye that she gained that day, temperately blinding her in said eye. She doesn’t consciously remember this day (or her mother in general) as Marshalia’s (and Marceline’s) father, Hunson Abadeer, used a memory spell to wipe the memory clean. From that day, Hunson would become overprotective of her, which leads to a great deal of Marshalia’s frustrations. In addition, with Marceline missing, Marshalia had come to assume that she was to become Hunson’s heir. So, despite being so very young, began to teach herself. She read books, watched documentaries that made her almost unfazable by horror movies, she even began to practice magic after practically begging Hunson to teach her. And while she became very knowledgeable, the demons of her father’s dimension would whisper to themselves about her.
//The one thing Marshalia lacked was a chaotic evil nature. She liked cute things, animals, especially ponies and unicorns, and her favorite color was pink. It were these interests that earned her weird looks and there were times, Marshalia recalls, that even Hunson gave her a weird look. As much as she tried, she could never seem to escape her father’s looming shadow.
//The older Marshalia gets, the more frustrated she gets. Frustrated over being treated like a baby. Frustrated over being second best. Her frustration, jealousy, and resentment leads her to pushing everyone away, including both Marceline and Hunson, who did genuinely care about her. Her jealousy warps her mind until finally, she goes on the attack.
//As the Nightmare Princess, she attacks Hunson and engages him into a magic duel. Just as it seems as Hunson is going to win, Nightmare Princess launches one final attack, using Marshalia’s soul as it’s power source. Hunson destroyed the attack quickly, but at the same time, destroyed Marshalia’s soul. After seeing what he had done, he turned to the only thing he knew that could fix this: magic. Through the power of dark magic and demon sacrifices, Hunson made a new soul for Marshalia and brought her back. She woke up a few hours later and it didn’t take long for her to figure out what had happened.
//Too scared to face Hunson after that, she ran away. She left a note on her bed, telling Hunson not to come and find her, but Hunson sent out several imp servants to find her and bring her back. But Marshalia refuses to go back.
//Being on the run in the Land of Ooo isn’t easy, and after a few years of running, Marshalia learned how to hide. And it had worked for over 900 years. She lives in a small cottage in the middle of a deep and thick forest, with her only frequent company being a corpse she animated. And while she has managed to make a living selling potions and hexes, she still lives in constant fear of being found out and brought back to her father.
//At first glance, Marshalia appears to be someone who just hates everything. She can be mean-spirited, short-tempered, and dour. But she’s acts this way to shield herself from being hurt anymore than she already has. In reality, she is still that shy, sweet and curious little girl she once was, but is too scared to show others who she really is. On top of this, Marshalia is also very socially awkward, having been mostly sheltered as a child mixed in with the fact that she has Autism and has a hard time knowing how to talk to others and has a hard time expressing her own feelings in a healthy way. Add on the fact that Marshalia has powers that are tied heavily to her emotions, then you’ve got a socially awkward, emotional mess of a person.
//She tends to think about Hunson a lot, too. Even though she left him a goodbye note, she never properly said goodbye or even apologized, even though she wants to. She feels like she is a huge disappointment to him and just an embarrassment to the Abadeer family name. Deep down, Marshalia still kinda looks up to Hunson and Marceline but at the same time, she very much jealous of both of them. Their success always makes Marshalia feel insecure about herself and being compared to them just makes Marshalia’s blood boil.
//So yeah, Marshalia has issues.

15, 25, and/or 32?
15.) Have you ever “shipped at first sight”?
Mmm, I don’t think so? I usually have to see a bit of interaction first. I think the closest I’ve come is Marinette/Luka, because I started shipping them as soon as I saw them ice skating in “Frozer” (I saw “Frozer” before I saw “Captain Hardrock” --- but I’m pretty sure that I would have shipped them straight from their first meeting in “Captain Hardrock” had I seen that episode first). If there were other ones beside that one, I can’t think of them right now.
25.) Have you ever shipped a pairing before you even started watching the show/movie simply because of gifs and graphics or similar?
Korra/Asami from Legend of Korra, and I still haven’t actually watched that, haha. But the Korrasami gifs I saw on my dash before the show even ended made it so that when the show did end and they were canon, I wasn’t even surprised (in the “this makes total sense” kind of way). Similarly, I ship Marceline/Princess Bubblegum from Adventure Time even though I haven’t watched that, either, and Finn/Rey from Star Wars even though, again, I don’t watch those movies.
32.) Share five must-read fics.
Hmm, let’s see . . .
The Legend of Zelda: The Return by Rose Zemlya. This fic was first posted back in 2001, and as such the writing quality of the early chapters especially is not to the standard that Rose has now (which is beyond incredible, absolutely amazing), but the story itself is still absolutely fantastic. When I first discovered it all those years ago, I remember pulling all-nighters to read it. I don’t think you have to have actually played The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time to understand this fic, so I really recommend it to everyone. Note that it’s not exactly a ship fic, although there are some romances in there. The primary focus is on the adventure, though (and, imo, the familial relationships Link has / gains).Oh, and for the summary: This fic takes place after Zelda sends Link back in time at the end of the original game, assuming he lost all his memories when he went back. He grew up as a normal boy (mostly), living with the owner of the archery shop in Castletown, but as always, evil is not content to wait for long. There’s much, much more to it than that, and I heartily recommend it. I can tell you right now that a lot of my headcanons about how the Sheikah and Gerudo operate exist as a direct result of what Rose came up with in her universe here. This is a completed fic.
The Legend of Zelda: Reconciliation by Rose Zemlya. The sequel to The Return, taking place three years later. It’s a loose (quite loose) adaptation of A Link to the Past, but you don’t need to have played that one to understand this fic, either (though I would strongly recommend reading The Return first). The writing quality in this one, particularly in the most recent chapters, is absolutely fantastic. This story is quite a bit darker than The Return, with some certified heartbreak (especially later on), so be prepared for that. Also be prepared for the fact that Rose has not updated this fic since 2014. She is still working on it, and each chapter is beyond worth the wait, but . . . again, it’s been five years and counting. So start reading at your own risk. Like its predecessor, Reconciliation is more about the adventure than the romance, but there are still romances entwined in there.
More Than Human by SBJ. This one actually is a romance fic, although like all good stories, there’s also a lot more going on than just the romance. This is a Powerpuff Girls fanfiction, with the primary ships being Blossom/Brick, Buttercup/Butch, and Bubbles/Boomer. It takes place while the Powerpuffs and Rowdyruffs are in high school, and I know that highschool AUs are typically godawful terrible (and so does SBJ---she acknowledges that in the summary!), but this one is actually pretty fantastic. As I said, there’s a lot more going on than just the romances, with a villain that you might not see coming, and though SBJ doesn’t delve too heavily into description, she gives enough to keep the prose flowing at a quick pace. This fic is also not completed and updates are unpredictable, but we have at least received an update in the past year, in June, so that’s at least less scary looking than Rose’s latest update on Reconciliation.
Phantom by PinkFalcon. This is a Pokémon fic, and specifically a PokéAni fic, and even more than that is a Phantom of the Opera AU. What makes this AU fantastic (apart from the A+ writing quality) is the fact that it doesn’t just take the PokéAni characters and drop them in an opera house. Instead, it blends the two universes, so that it’s a battling school rather than an opera house, a Battle Ghost haunting Arena Five instead of a phantom haunting Box Five, and so on. The primary ship is Ash/Misty, though there is some Misty/Rudi as well (and Rudi is treated respectively, no worries there). The only bad thing about this fic is that it isn’t completed, either, and hasn’t been updated in . . . a very long time. I’m not exactly sure of when the last update was, since the last “update” we got wasn’t an update at all, but was an author’s note saying the story wasn’t abandoned. That was last year. So who knows when this will be updated, if ever, but the chapters that are there are still worth it.
And On the Third Day by MerryArwen. This is a Harry Potter fic set immediately after the seventh book (the proper seventh book, not that awful epilogue), and is a Harry/Ron/Hermione fic, quite honestly the best I’ve ever read. All of the characterization is 100% on point, the writing quality is fantastic, and I really can’t recommend it enough. As a bonus, this is a completed fic.

Can you tell us more about Bonnie? More specifically... everything.
"Y'all sure do love Bonnie, huh? Well here goes, she was just... stunning. When I attended college my first year, my music course took place next to the dance room. Our lessons were one on one. I often saw her dancing. She was.... breathtaking. She studied ballet. Her coach was a retired Russian ballet dancer and he was prideful to say the least, he treated her good, taught her everything he knew. She was his star pupil. They trained her so hard. She was in productions and always played the lead role. My favorite was swan lake. I attended a lot of her shows with my friends Marceline and Simon. She was so beautiful anon... I barely spoke to her. I was too nervous. She knew my friends and she often visited a lot. I couldn't even leave my room I was so embarassed. She loved Elton John, the goo goo dolls, Whitney Houston, dolly parton, def leopard, Madonna, girl in red, and many other bands. The list goes on. She was so beautiful. She loved games, Pokemon was her favorite. She loved romance, horror and international movies. Her favorite book is Sad Girls. Her favorite poetry is flowers of evil. She had a stuffed bunny. She had it since childhood and was her prized possession. Her favorite Disney movie is Hunchback of Notre dame. She would sing in the showers. Her voice angelic.... She was in a terrible accident when she was little it took her right arm. But that didn't stop her. She's a fighter and stubborn as all hell. But she's so faithful, kind, and trusting. She was a beautiful soul. And I lost her so early.... i miss her."
