When Emily awoke, it was June who first greeted her with a big plate of fish, knowing she would no doubt be hungry when she rose from the waters: As pleased as she was to know their guest was getting her strength back (to say nothing of her surprise to learn that Emily could be out of the water, even if it might only be for a short amount of time), she also didn’t want her overexerting herself, and hoped this midnight walk didn’t exacerbate her injuries.

“Randall is out at the moment,” she explained, as she passed Emily the plate before taking a seat on the stool beside the tub, clasping her hands together as she continued, “He said something about going to the farmer’s market and picking up some flowers to brighten this place up a little more...something about roses?”

She and Wilhelm did not miss the spring in their son’s step when he got up that morning: Although he was disappointed to see that Emily was still asleep when he awoke, it didn’t completely dampen his spirits as he went about his morning routine, dishing himself up some coffee and breakfast with a smile, a smile that didn’t fade as he ate and gazed out the kitchen window, even humming cheerfully as he washed up afterwards. The Pace parents knew he loved and savored his weekends whenever he got them, but they had never seen him so cheery on his time off...

“What do you think?” June had asked her husband, moving to refill her coffee mug as their son headed upstairs to get dressed before he headed into town. At this question, Wilhelm had simply smiled back, saying with a chuckle, “I think our boy’s in love. And judging by his mood today...I think it’s safe to say the feeling is mutual.”

My issue with the “Who else would be in charge? Steve?”/“You know, Steve’s grown a lot” exchange is that there are two main possibilities for how we’re supposed to read it, neither of which really make sense:

Steve is no longer a cruel bully like he was in S1, but Jonathan believes he still is. Steve is obviously no longer a cruel bully—he apologized for his actions at the end of S1 and is kind to children/lesbians—but the idea that Jonathan still thinks he’s like that is frankly absurd, and I don’t know why Nancy would think he meant that. They’re not close, but he presumably heard the beginning of Steve’s apology to him. He’s been present on many of the occasions that Steve has helped fight various UD threats. He was charitable, apparently to the point of dishonesty, in recounting Steve’s actions at the Halloween party to Nancy. He never expresses worry about Steve hanging out with Nancy/his family/the kids. He never says that Steve is mean or violent. If he truly thinks Steve is a bad guy, he’s been extremely circumspect and blasé about it.

Steve is smarter/less of a goober than he was in the past, but Jonathan still thinks he’s stupid/a big goober. I think it’s pretty clear that Jonathan thinks Steve is kind of a dope. He suggests that it’d be absurd for Steve to be in charge (something you would say of a dim-witted person, not a mean one) and I think also scoffs at him saying something silly once in S2. However, Steve, while not unintelligent, is kind of a ditz, and if anything has become more of one since S1. I don’t know why Nancy would think he’d become smarter than when they’d dated.

There are also two outside possibilities that make a little more sense:

Jonathan specifically means that Steve is ill-suited to a leadership role re: UD stuff because historically he’s not been proactive about it, and Nancy means that Steve was more proactive this time around. This would be a very specific thing for Jonathan to mean, and a slightly exaggerated positive evaluation of Steve’s response on Nancy’s part (he’s not as receptive to Nancy’s concerns or requests as he could be).

Nancy’s response isn’t really about Steve at all. She’s just needling Jonathan because she knows something’s up and is pissed off that he won’t tell her. This isn’t very nice, but it’s understandable that she’d be frustrated.

2023, The Year of Self-Sabotage

Has anyone noticed the trend businesses have been on in 2023? There's a LOT of self-sabotage going on in the business world. Throughout my life, and everyone else has their own observations too, once in a while you see a company make a boneheaded decision about their product or service. And once in a while you'll see a decision get made that is bad, but maybe it at least has some justification (even to an anti-capitalist goober like myself). But this year has been nonsensical moves of greed or product/service sabotage that make no sense for longevity or harm what's in the best interest of the consumer.

Activision-Blizzard: The Overwatch debacle, and Diablo Immortal's scummy practices.

Netflix: The account sharing debacle.

Twitter: Maximum divorced loser Elon Musk destroying its functionality and branding and we still call it Twitter.

Reddit: Inspired by Musk's stupidity, the API tools debacle. Shame on the Reddit communities for not knowing how to strike btw (you don't put a time limit on it).

Hollywood: Pulling shows and films from streaming services to declare them as failed products and somehow get a tax write-off for it.

Also Hollywood: Willing to take quarterly losses greater than the annual cost to meet the demands of two striking unions put together.

Unity: Announced in the past day that it will charge developers a fee for installations because greed.

Titan Submersible: "Safety is for losers" says billionaire who proceeds to use his shoddy tech to do a murder-suicide.

Starbucks: Breaking ALL of the labor laws to try and stop unionization. Admittedly a reach to be on this list but the situation (like all the others) is ongoing and can compound.

Embracer: A massive corporate company that bought a bunch of smaller companies. Thought a 2 billion dollar deal with the Saudi government was a sure thing, so they spent 2 billion dollars on stuff. Deal falls through, so they start closing companies they acquired.

That's just the ones I can remember off the top of my head. These aren't business decisions done for the sake of consumers. These are all decisions done to spite consumers or the workers who produce the products and services.

People try to remember years as being the "year of" something. And it's a thing I do too. For me, 2023 is the year of corporate self-sabotage.

You know, with Lucifer being the Sin of Pride, I kinda expected him to be…harsher? More arrogant? Solemn? Certainly, I wasn’t expecting a rubber-duck collecting, jazz singing, cat-loving enthusiastic goober. It feels like “proud” and “self-important” have gotten their wires crossed in my brain.

Because I’m realizing now that stuff like cooing over a cat, pet goats, etc., using embarrassing nicknames, hearing people take a dig at your less-than-commanding appearance, and having your familial drama, all the while not caring how many people have a front row seat to watch it happen….

That kinda is pride, isn’t it? Not to act the way everyone else thinks is proper or expects of you, but to do the exact opposite and not care what people think. Lucifer severely outclasses all of Hell, but especially sinners — why would he value their opinions? He may regret that he got cast out of Heaven just for humanity to abuse their free will, but the rest of his life and personality he’s seemingly pretty comfortable with.

The opposite of pride is SHAME. Of course Lucifer is shameless about being immature or weird or cringy!
