I'm gonna need dunmeshi fans to think critically for a few seconds about the Toshiro and Laios misunderstanding. Turn off your western culture brains and think for a minute

It's one thing to dislike toshiro, and another thing to do it completely blindly and from a modern western perspective. Yes Laios is very heavily autistic coded and that plays SO MUCH into the entire story and not just his and Toshiro's relationship, but you need to realize that another major aspect of his misunderstanding with Toshiro is CULTURAL. Like how are yall missing the point so badly

Toshiro is from a high context culture, raised into nobility, and living in a foreign country. Think about how this may intesect with Laios as someone from an isolated, lower context culture

i saw one tweet on dunmeshtwt going "i think kabru Likes Women Mostly, Actually" and the follow-up tweet was like "he'd be a boytoy to a rich older woman but Alas," and i find it soooo hilarious actually . he got one adoptive elf mother and suddenly its "oh he'd like cougars" like lets Stand up and Think for a second.. .

For anyone wanting to get into the Dungeon Meshi anime who only knows English, especially if you're uncertain whether you want to watch it dubbed or subbed, I'd like to recommend the dub.

Both jp and eng performances are really good, but unfortunately the subtitles for the sub are...lacking. While not inaccurate, they're missing a lot of the clarity and nuance (such as: set up and punchlines for jokes) and make it seem much less like a comedy series.

But the dub translation makes all the comedic beats much more explicit and obvious, and it's easier to follow along with the story too. Especially if you haven't read the manga, dub gets you the intended viewing experience if you need English.

#this might change if the quality of the subtitles improves with later episodes tho #Also can i just day I really appreciate the original Japanese has it's own unique subtitles rather than lifting from the dub script #because translation is different from localization and ofc the dub won't reflect the original Japanese script #unfortunately the subs provided Kind Of Suck #dungeon meshi #translation #delicious in dungeon #textpost
