Ushijima Wakatoshi
The car would seem too quiet once you dropped Tendou off at a train station a few stops down from his hotel.
You had insisted on driving him the whole way, but he simply wiggled his eyebrows and threw finger guns at you and Ushijima after accepting the ride and getting in your rental car. Something about "not wanting to third wheel", which you had also insisted he wouldn't be. You enjoyed having him around, and it was apparent your boyfriend did too.
Tendou flew in from Paris without his partner, since they couldn't take the time off from work for it. Consequently, he also attended the Shiratorizawa Academy reunion party alone. It gave you the opportunity to get to know your boyfriend's best friend better, which you appreciated, but you would've felt less awkward with Ushijima if Tendou's partner had been beside him.
Tendou exited the car in such a rush that you were suddenly concerned that you'd been driving too slowly. He flashed his phone screen to you, as if he could read your thoughts, and you saw that his partner was calling. You stepped out of the car to see him off, since Ushijima was already waiting on the sidewalk.
Standing beside your boyfriend, you watched Tendou cross the street and practically fly into the train station.
Maybe he wanted to get a head start on showing them a bit about the city he grew up in. At the party, you had heard him telling Ushijima that he was going to film himself eating around Sendai for them while he was here, which you thought was so sweet. The next time Ushijima flew somewhere without you – which would be soon, when game season began – you'd make sure to ask him to take some videos to go along with the pictures of his day that he sent you.
You've been standing outside in the cold for a while, feeling a chill come over you as a signal of the time. As if sensing your discomfort, Ushijima removed his coat to drape it over your shoulders. You pulled it tighter around you after you gave him your thanks.
"Should we get going?" he asked, even if he made no move to leave his spot beside you, resting on a guard rail outside the train station where the two of you had seen Tendou off.
"I thought it would've been nice to see Tendou-kun's partner in person," you said, instead, closing the uppermost button on Ushijima's coat under your chin so that it would stay put around your shoulders, even with the wind. "We could've had a café double date."
He hummed as a means of agreement, leaning closer to you to share his warmth. "Satori would have liked that," he said. "He has excellent taste in pastries. You would enjoy coffee tasting with his partner, too."
The wind tumbled past the train station before you could respond, reminding you to get back in the car and away from the clutch of winter. Without brushing your hair out of your eyes, you immediately turned to nuzzle your face into Ushijima's chest to warm your nose and cheeks.
"Okay, we can go now." Your voice was muffled by his shirt, which was far too thin for the weather. Once again, you marvelled at Ushijima's superhuman heat-generating and cold-resisting ability, much more in awe than you were jealous. It would've definitely freed up a lot of room in your luggage if you didn't get cold as easily as you did.
Pulling away from him and instantly mourning the loss of his warmth, you stretched out your hand for him to hold for the short walk back to the car. Ushijima took your hand and pulled your arm around his waist so that you could continue to use him to stay warm. "I don't want you to get cold," he said, smoothing your wind-tousled hair down and tucking the longer strands behind your ears.
"You spoil me." You gave him an appreciative squeeze as you started down the length of the train station, smiling. He put his own arm around you and returned the gesture, easily matching your steps.
"We can visit Satori and his partner in Paris in the summer," Ushijima said, as he held the door open for you. You paused in your attempt to get in the car, before you righted your posture and stood up straight beside the driver's seat. He repeated himself, giving you time to absorb what he was saying. The smile on your face only grew when his offer set in.
You put your hand on his arm, relishing the way he was solid under your palm. That you weren't dreaming. "That sounds amazing, Toshi," you said. "It won't clash with anything on your schedule?"
Ushijima shook his head, giving you a small smile of his own. "I have time in the late summer."

Childe
You slapped at Ajax's cheek.
He yelped more out of indignation that you had hit him than pain, and he fixed you with a glare, his brows knitting together. Your mother was already out of sight, so it meant that you could "act like a hooligan".
You jabbed a finger in the direction of his cheek, returning his stink eye in kind. "It's all your fault!" you said, your volume in between a whisper and a shout, still mindful of the fact that you were banished upstairs with him as a form of punishment. "They knew 'cause you had crumbs on your stupid face!"
Ajax stuck his tongue out at you and made a farting noise with his mouth. You made a move to catch the wiggling muscle, thumb and index finger readied. He ducked your hand to the best of his ability, which dragged you along with the suddenness of his movement.
At the threat of losing your balance and then falling, you scrambled to push Ajax under you so that he would hit the floor first. There was the sound of both your bodies dully thudding against the carpet that softened the impact. Your shoulder and hip throbbed in protest to the fall, and you remembered your cousin's advice as you pinched the bridge of your nose to keep yourself from crying.
There was no way that Ajax would let you forget it if you cried in front of him because of a little fall.
You elbowed his back, yelling at him to mask the beginnings of a sniffle. Ajax thrashed about in preparation to return the blow, and you elbowed him again in an attempt to make him stop moving. The already stretched neckline of the sweater that you had been forced to share with him for time-out was digging into your neck, and it was all because he kept flailing about like an earthworm that had been cut in half.
"S-Stop!"
Ajax was on his belly now, not quite facing you yet. "No, you stop! You!" he said, his spit landing warm on your chin. You grimaced, moving your hand from your nose to scrub his saliva off your face.
"You're ew," you said, still frowning.
Ajax made another farting noise with his mouth, before he began mocking your words with an overly exaggerated imitation of your voice. You stuck a hand between the sweater and your neck, tugging backwards with as much force as you could manage with the rest of your arm uncomfortably trapped inside the washed out fabric.
"Your neck is red," Ajax said, poking at your skin along a line that felt particularly tender.
You swatted him away with your other hand, and this time, you were the one sticking your tongue out. Just for a second, before he could think to try and pinch it like you tried earlier on.
"If you keep frowning, Barbatos will kiss you and you'll frown forever!" he said, shoving at your forehead with the fleshy part of his palm.
"So? Then I'll frown forever!" you said, doing to Ajax what had been done to you. Maybe if you could stretch this old sweater to the point that it ripped—
This time, he did not repay the shove in kind. Ajax was quiet for a moment, so you waited, still thinking about ruining this sweater but not daring to act upon the temptation. You wanted to avoid getting punished for another thing. "Then who'll want to marry you?" he asked. "No one likes angry-looking people!"
You made a farting noise at him, still frowning. "I don't care," you said.
Ajax was moving unnecessarily again, so you jerked on the neckline of the sweater to keep it from digging in once more. He seemed not to notice your discomfort, so he continued tossing about until he was lying on his side and facing you.
"Okay, fine," Ajax said, sighing. You harrumphed, because you felt like you deserved to say those words to him more. "If no one wants to marry you, I'll do it."
He made it sound like an absolute chore. As though the prospect of marrying you was worse than cleaning out the village horse stables by himself. Your ire burned in your cheeks, tightening the muscles of your jaw.
"I don't like to marry you, Ajax," you said. "You smell sweaty and you're bad at counting."
It was Ajax's turn to be insulted, a gasp escaping him at your honest – though slightly overplayed to discredit him – assessment of him. His annoyance pleased you, but you refused to let it show. Instead, you bit on the inside of your cheek to let it sting a little. Just enough to keep your lips pinched to prevent you from grinning.
"You can marry me for my Mama's apple cake!" he said, his eyes wide and his smile content. He spoke as though he was offering you a solution to all your life's troubles. Like waiting for this time-out to be declared over by an old person so that you could rejoin the other kids playing board games downstairs and eat some of the apple cake Ajax's mother made.
It was the most famous apple cake in your village. In the whole of Snezhnaya, even.
You felt some saliva gathering in your mouth at the memory of the few mouthfuls you managed to steal an hour earlier, and you cleared your throat loudly so that he would not hear you swallow it. The apple cake made by Ajax's mother was the most famous apple cake because she made it best. Even better than your own mother, but you would never say it out loud.
His smile seemed to grow, and you knew he could tell you were seriously considering his offer. You huffed, feeling like you betrayed yourself even if there was no such thing as a person who could turn down an extremely tasty slice of apple cake.
"I still don't like to marry you," you said, wrinkling your nose in displeasure when you imagined yourself having to hold Ajax's hand and then act like the closeness brought you joy. "But maybe I like to marry your brother."

Ganyu
There was a clink of porcelain against metal, dulled by the clear wine that filled the serving vessel. Ganyu tilted her head that was snug against her folded arms, and looked up at you from beneath the brush of her hair that partially hid you from her sight. You were stretched out with your back against a prominent root of the golden knotwood tree behind you, dappled light from the evening sun glowing about you and highlighting your beauty.
"All this sighing, and not once have you touched the wine," you said, playful, as you pointed to the eared wine cup sitting to her left, still clean and still empty. Ganyu could not help it when another sigh escaped her.
You raised your own freshly refilled cup in her direction, mouthing a "cheers" before you downed it all in one gulp. There was an easy smile on your face, and she felt warm from beholding you despite being completely and unfortunately sober.
She wanted her head to be as clear as possible about what she would like to suggest.
Ganyu lifted her head and her arms off the lacquered surface of the folding table, and she straightened her posture so that she was sitting upright with her hands to herself. The curiosity flickering in your eyes was the only indication she had that you noticed the new rigidity in your drinking companion. She wiggled her fingers in her lap as you poured some wine into her cup and then gestured for her to drink.
Perhaps one cup would be what she needed.
"I will drink it, if you would prefer not to imbibe," you said, smiling as you stirred the wine in the serving vessel and helped yourself to yet another portion.
Ganyu reached out for the plate of dried persimmons and put two slices in her mouth, rushing through the chewing and then the swallowing. She clenched and released her other hand, the one that was not sticky with the residue of fruit, and then clenched and released it once more in quick succession.
You remained unmindful of the avalanche contained in her as you sipped leisurely at your wine in between delicate bites of dried persimmon.
The wine was bittersweet on her tongue and exceedingly smooth in her throat. She found herself reaching for another cupful as she considered the body of the wine and the flavours that lingered with it. It had a mild sweetness like melons which was pleasantly balanced with a healthy dose of bitterness.
Between the two of you, you were not the one for nitpicking when it came to alcohol; she was far more picky about her alcohol than you were. Despite this, she trusted in your judgment of taste, which was why she was not surprised when she found the wine you brought out for her tasty. Ganyu was already lifting her third cup to her nose for a long inhale before she decided to slow down with a few slices of dried persimmon.
She placed her cup down on the table, empty once again but warmed up from the heat of the wine.
The sky was beginning to darken into night when she looked out at the same faraway place your eyes were fixed on, somewhere along the line of the sea that wove it together with the sky. "I was invited to attend another wedding tomorrow," she said, another piece of fruit in her hand to keep it busy. "That makes at least one wedding a day for all the days of the past month."
Your eyes came back to her at the mention of marriage, open and tender as you regarded her, and the look in your eyes emboldened her. More than any lingering warmth from the wine. More than any illusion of recklessness that indulging in the drink could possibly hope to induce.
Ganyu's intention had been to invite you to accompany her to a wedding since she had been given the privilege of a guest of her own. Just one wedding.
Perhaps, if she could find the words after, she was planning to ask you to move in with her in the new residential compound at Yujing Terrace since construction was nearing completion. Rex Lapis was personally overseeing it, and she had been allotted an apartment in the compound as a benefit for her service in the newly formed Liyue Qixing.
The apartment that would be hers was far too generous for one occupant, but appropriate for two.
There were many humans who sent out invitations to the adepti as a whole. For births. For the blessing of their newly built houses. For the opening of new shops and the founding of businesses. For engagements. For weddings.
Just like her, you had been invited to celebrate with the humans on many occasions, but you have never accepted.
There was something about having witnessed the many weddings she had that stirred something ravenous in her heart. She did not know her own heart to be particularly movable – which was a trait to be credited to her being part adepti – but there was something in the customs of a marriage that left her with the hunger to overlap with you in a way that was tangible.
Adeptal energy had a signature that only other adepti could identify. Among your people, there was no question of your relationship. Your adeptal energy was evident on her entire body, as hers was on yours. The other adepti could sense it. Some of them could even see it. Even more important than that was they respected it.
However—
When you visited her at the harbour in the temporary office building Rex Lapis had set up for her in her new role in supporting the governance of Liyue, would the humans know that she was yours just by looking? That you were hers? Would they even be able to discern the love that bound the two of you?
Marriage was a custom that the humans created to give importance to the promise of a forever that was attainable for them. Their lives were too short for any forever that spanned more than a hundred years. The adepti never had need of such a practice because any length of forever was entirely within reach.
Even so, Ganyu longed for it – the promise that knits two hearts together, celebrated in the manner that both humans and adepti alike could partake in with joy.
"I would like the two of us to have a wedding of our own to celebrate."
The night seemed to stop in its trek to pass over the orange-pink of the evening. The Geo crystalflies darting about like daytime stars seemed to hear a call to return home since the day was coming to an end. The rocks that made up the Guyun Stone Forest held their breaths. The sea that surrounded the two of you seemed to cease its motion and wait.
The sky and the sea and the stones and all the creatures about waited. Ganyu waited with them.
"Of course, Xiao Yu," you said, detaching your back from the knotwood tree root behind you and leaning in to close the distance. You reached for her across the folding table, scooping her hand up from the lacquered surface to clasp it in yours, and the smile that adorned your face was more brilliant than the rising sun. "In the mortal customs and with the blessing of our people, let's be joined."
Her next exhale flowed easily from her parted lips.
As her breath moved from within her to outside of her, so did any nervousness that gripped her heart. Her chest relaxed with your unhesitating acceptance of her marriage proposal. The realisation that her fretting was unfounded was beginning to dawn on her.
She reciprocated the grip you had on her hand in kind.
You once confessed to her many human lifespans ago, before the thick of the Archon War, that your hands were made only for possessing the things of blood and the things of destruction. Back then, Ganyu had neither the courage nor the eloquence to offer you her own differing opinion. These hands of yours were now lined with scars and hardened in many places from even more battles won, but she firmly believed they were made to hold hers.
She lifted your joined hands to her lips and hoped you understood her just the same.

Nanami Kento
The door clicked shut as Nanami's mother left the room after she tucked the two of you in.
In less than ten seconds, you opened your eyes, the pretense of being asleep all but forgotten. You slumped onto your side to peek at your friend in the futon beside yours, and you watched him for any telltale signs that he had been pretending to sleep too.
It was still early. Nanami's bedroom was too dark for you to read the time on the clock hanging on the wall, but you knew it was still earlier than your bedtime. You could feel it in your bones.
"What?" came his voice in the moments before you were going to give up and turn back around. He looked like he was close to falling asleep, his eyes only half open under the warm glow of the nightlight in the corner of his bedroom.
"Want me to tell you another story?" you asked, shuffling closer to him regardless. "I know lots. My grandma tells me a new one every time she's over."
He blinked slowly. You couldn't tell if he was trying to blink himself more awake, or if he was trying to tell you he just wanted to sleep.
Nanami was weird like that. He preferred to tell you things without using his words. It was a very old person thing that he did. Your parents were like that too, pointing at your textbooks on the floor and clearing their throats loudly instead of just telling you to pick them up and put them away. It was easy being friends with Nanami, because you were good at dealing with these old people things.
He turned to face you, his hair falling over his face when he moved. "No," he said. He blinked again, before he did his old man grunt and scooted closer. The edges of his futon bunched up between the two of you. You removed your hand from under your blanket to pat down the peaks.
"Then what do you wanna talk about?"
This time, he hummed. You waited for a moment. When you were about to tell him about the fat cat who lived near your house, he responded with a soft "you".
"What?" you asked. "Why me?"
Nanami scrubbed at his nose before he brushed his hair out of his face. "Mum likes it when you come over," he said. He did the old man grunt again, looking away from you momentarily.
You noticed him scrunching up a section of his blanket in his hand, so you decided to fill in the silence with a story about that fat cat. She was fluffy and orange and very friendly, always coming to rub against your legs when you approached her on the way home from school. You were sure Nanami would like her, and you were sure she'd like him too.
If your father allowed you to bring his camera to Nanami's house, you would've had a picture of her to show him. It would've helped him sleep better. Fat cats made everything better.
"I want to meet her," he said. "Because Mum and Dad say I can't have a cat."
You held out your hand to him across the folds of the overlapping futons, your little finger up. "Tomorrow! I promise," you said. "But we have to sleep now. She's only there when it's early and when it's late."
Nanami released the fistful of the blanket he had been holding on to for the entirety of your recollections about the fat cat. You wiggled your still outstretched hand in his direction, smiling. Conceding and returning the grin, he hooked his own little finger around yours.
"It's a promise," he said.
You shook your joined hands. "It's a promise," you repeated, satisfied and ready to sleep to have energy for tomorrow. The fat cat enjoyed playing hide and seek but you weren't worried because Nanami was good at finding things. He could find her faster than you could, you were sure of it.
Your arm was starting to get tired from holding it out for so long, but Nanami kept your little finger tightly in his grasp. He seemed to notice the way your hand trembled, and he lowered his arm so that both of your hands were lying flat on the flattened peaks of the futon and blankets between both of your bodies.
Nanami was good at understanding it when people were saying things without words. It was another old person thing that he did. One more thing about him that made him seem older than he was. You liked it because it was familiar. He had the same patience about him that your grandma did, and she was your favourite person.
Your grandma would like him a lot, too. The next time she was in town, you'd make sure to invite him for a sleepover.
"I like it too," came Nanami's voice after a period of silence.
Your mind was already hazy with the onset of sleep, so it took you some time to process the words that were spoken. "I like it when you come over too," he said, as if he knew that you hadn't quite heard him the first time. "I just wanted to tell you."
You bit back a yawn, nuzzling into the borrowed pillow beneath your head. "I like here too," was the last thing you told him before you exchanged "goodnight"s.

Diluc Ragnvindr
Diluc stood in the doorway, a tender affection in his gaze that wordlessly summoned your attention even if your back was facing him.
A smile bloomed on your face as you took a break from watching the night breeze fiddle with the grass of Dawn Winery, getting up from the window seat to go to him. His strides were larger and quicker than yours, and you found yourself toe to toe with him only a few steps away from where you started.
One of his gloved hands scooped up yours, and Diluc inclined his head ever so slightly to press his habitual set of kisses onto the back of your hand and across your knuckles. You greeted him with several pecks of your own, showering them over his cheeks and his nose. He turned his face in an attempt to catch your lips with his. Even if your intention was to tease him a little by avoiding his mouth, your lips still ended up at the corner of his.
Your laughter filled the room when Diluc made a noise of mock disapproval. "You're being difficult," he said, the beginnings of a grin forming on his face. Though his words were accusatory, his tone was completely bare of teeth. You merely kept smiling at him, wiggling the hand he had been holding out of his grasp so that you could coil both of your arms around his waist.
"Say 'please'," you said, beginning to sway to a tune that he couldn't hear. Diluc allowed himself to be rocked back and forth by you, removing his gloves and tucking them into his trouser pockets as he was swung in a misshapen circle around the centre of the room.
When you slowed, he cradled your face in his hands, reverent as though he was holding a holy artefact made of glass. Something wholly precious and utterly irreplaceable. In many ways, you knew that was how he felt about you. Diluc had never been a man of many words, but his actions spoke louder than any poetry he could recite to you ever would. It was one of the many things you adored about him.
"Love, please may I have a kiss?"
You puckered your lips for show, coming to a stop in front of the dresser. "Of course," you said, giving him a squeeze around the waist and inclining your face to his. Diluc leaned in with a chuckle, and you could feel the upward tilt of the corners of his mouth against yours.
Once he deemed the kiss he received from you sufficient for the time being, he pulled away.
"I have something for you," Diluc said, smoothly reaching towards one of the topmost drawers of the dresser and pulling it open. You craned your neck to see what he was taking, but he purposefully picked something up from within the drawer with the back of his hand facing outwards.
Bouncing on the heels of your socked feet, you shook him. "What is it?" His other hand was on the small of your back, keeping you steady and keeping you close.
Finally, Diluc lifted his loosely gathered fist to your face and opened his hand. Nestled in his palm was a jewelled brooch, all the precious stones decorating it catching the honeyed light from the chandelier above to wink up at you. You couldn't help the muted gasp that escaped you as you took in the details of the gift he was presenting to you.
It was his mother's brooch. You recognised it from the few family portraits scattered about the mansion, since most of the ones that included Diluc's mother were placed in the master bedroom that currently lies unoccupied.
"I," he started, but he coughed as if he had forgotten what he was about to say. Diluc turned his eyes to the dresser mirror for a moment, before he met your eyes once again, clearing his throat. You kept your own eyes glued to him with much expectation. "I would like it very much if you wore this brooch for the soirée on the last day of the Windblume Festival."
You gaped for a moment, trying to find words for the feeling swelling up in your heart. The silence between the two of you was fortunately comfortable, and not awkward. As Diluc waited for a response, his eyes were soft when they were on you. Hopeful.
You withdrew your arms from around his waist to clasp both of your hands around Diluc's hand that held the brooch, admiring the gift as much as your heart admired the one bestowing the gift upon you.
"It would be my greatest honour, Master Diluc."

Gojou Satoru
Gojou always struck you as sort of weird.
It was one thing to find him weird because you were from a non-sorcerer family. Gojou's weirdness, however, seemed to be completely impossible to explain even when you considered he might be a weirdo because of the kind of family he was from.
"You look like you could use a smoke," said Ieiri, emerging from around the corner and coming to stand beside you.
You waved your hand to greet her, but you quickly closed your hand into a fist when she plucked a spare cigarette from her skirt pocket and held it out to you. "Wouldn't kill you if it was only once in a while," she said, and her tone was akin to if you were the one she discovered smoking behind the school compound while still in uniform.
Ieiri took no offence to your instant refusal and slipped the cigarette back into her pocket.
"Has Gojou gone home yet?" you asked, after looking over Ieiri's head. "Those blue eyes seem to be following me everywhere these days." A tall silhouette peeked out from the same corner that she had just appeared out of, and you whipped your head to face the vending machine in front of you, pretending to be deep in thought about which drink to buy.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw that it was just one of the supervisors rushing by. Probably on the way to Yaga-sensei's office.
An exhale of relief left you, and you could feel your shoulders dropping into a more relaxed position. Ieiri's pointed gaze on you called some of the tension back into your posture. "Did you want something?" you asked, slotting a few coins in the vending machine and pressing the button for a bottle of cold barley tea.
You bent to retrieve your drink from the pick-up port. When you stood up straight, you found Ieiri leaning against the vending machine. Was she trying to block you from leaving? You couldn't think of a reason for her to want to do anything like that. Then again, everyone you met in Tokyo Jujutsu Tech was, in one way or the other, beyond the boundaries of any logic a non-sorcerer could think up. You simply chalked it up to weirdness being a pre-existing condition for sorcerers, and they were weird in every shade of the word.
"Gojou's still in school," Ieiri said, after a while. Your drink was already sweating in your hand, so you opened the cap and took a swig, leaving room for her to keep talking. She looked like she had a lot more to say. "Gojou also bribed me to ask you this: what perfume are you wearing, and where did you get it?"
The sip you were about to take sloshed out of the bottle and onto your uniform jacket when you failed to connect your mouth to your drink.
Ieiri miraculously had a handkerchief in her other skirt pocket. You took it from her gratefully and began patting down the wet spot on your chest. "Oh, and he doesn't want you to tell me. He wants you to text him a picture and the name of the place you got it. For privacy, he says."
If Gojou wasn't the weirdest person in your school at this point in time, he definitely had no competition now.
You grunted as a means of acknowledging the weird request and the even weirder conditions. "I don't get it," you said, wringing Ieiri's handkerchief to make sure it wasn't soaked through with barley tea. She put her hand out with her palm facing up, telling you that she was going to wash it anyway.
"He like-likes you," she said, after she snatched her handkerchief from you. You had insisted on washing it for her before returning it, but the words for it never made it past your throat. Instead, her statement dawned on you, and you choked on your saliva. She patted you on the back. Was she consoling you, or was she trying to help you clear your throat?
"No," was the first thing you managed to say.
That made Ieiri cackle, and she slapped your back to punctuate each "ha!" that escaped her. You moved away from her, clicking your tongue. She opted to push her hand against the glass of the vending machine to continue her weird sorcerer laughing fit. You took another gulp of your barley tea, making sure the mouth of the bottle was touching your lips before you tipped it back to drink from it.
When Ieiri appeared to have calmed down, there was an expectant look in her eyes. You sighed, remembering the bomb she had just dropped on you. "Fine," you groaned. "I'll snap a pic and send it to Gojou with the name of the mall."
She cheered, and she hooked her arm around yours. "I'll take you on a coffee date with the bribe money," she said, too loudly. You narrowed your eyes at her. She plastered an innocent smile onto her face, showing you all her teeth. You wanted to shake her off your arm, but she tangled her other arm in the mix to keep you from getting away.
"I'll take you on a coffee date! Just the two of us! It'll be fun!"
Why was she yelling? As you continued to struggle feebly against her, she insistently mouthed a "say 'yes'" to you. Your brain floundered for a moment, and she began to nod her head aggressively as she continued to mouth those words to you.
"It's a date!" you managed, and your voice came out too shrill to be natural. Surely, Gojou wasn't that dumb, right? If he was lurking nearby and eavesdropping, he wouldn't fall for something as fake as that—
"Ieiri, you betrayer! You're supposed to be my wingwoman!"
No, Gojou was, in fact, dumber than you gave him credit for.
Ieiri's smile was conspiratorial when you shot her a look of disapproval. She let go of your arm as soon as Gojou came stomping up to the two of you, sunglasses askew on his nose from the violence in his movements.
It was only when he was close enough for his shadow to loom over you that you realised Ieiri wasn't lying. She wasn't trying to get a reaction out of you either. Gojou's cheeks were dusted pink now that you got a good look at him, and the colour in his ears was far more pronounced than that on his face.
He did. He did like-like you.
"Hand it over," Ieiri said, shouldering her way into the space between Gojou and you. Her hand was face-up, and she kept knocking it against his sternum. Gojou humphed, shoving his hand into his pants pocket and pulling out an admittedly obscene roll of cash for the petty task he set for Ieiri. She closed her hand over the money and tugged on it until he let go, hissing at her like a feral cat.
With her reward money in hand, she slid back to your side. She winked at you, smiling brightly as she raised her hand as though she had won a trophy. "Study break's next week, so let's go then," she said, purposely ignoring the glare Gojou was fixing on her. "We can check out that fancy place in Ginza! The one with the hot barista." She made a show of pocketing the roll of cash before she skipped away.
"So," you said, after standing in silence for a while and deciding you couldn't bear it. It was the longest Gojou has gone without speaking since you met him. You tried to make eye contact with him, but he was making it difficult by holding the bridge of his sunglasses up with his finger.
"So," Gojou repeated, finally putting his hand down. He had been bouncing incessantly on his heels, lips pinched. You were about to ask him why he felt the need to get Ieiri to ask you about your signature fragrance, but you stopped yourself when he opened his mouth.
Gojou ended up closing his mouth a second after he opened it, so you spoke instead.
"You could've just asked me," you said. "It's not a secret or anything, you know?" Gojou's hands were in his pants pockets with the thumbs hanging out. You've been watching his thumbs slide here and there as he fidgeted all this while, and it made your own hands itch for something to do.
You uncapped your barley tea and finished it off in a few big gulps.
"I didn't want to make it weird." His answer surprised you. It seemed like nothing fazed him. You had assumed that potential embarrassment was one of those things that had no effect on him whatsoever. It was only now that you realised that you were mistaken.
"It wouldn't have been weird," you said. "Well, until now. Bribing a friend to ask is definitely weird."
Gojou took offence at that, and he jabbed an accusing finger at your shoulder. "I'm not weird! You are!" he insisted, the pink on his face deepening to red. "And you smell weird!"
At his half-hearted insults, you laughed. You quickly put up a hand to stifle your laughter when you noticed Gojou was starting to sweat, his brow starting to glimmer in the late afternoon sun. It made your chest swell with pride that you had done that to him, but you pushed the thought to the back of your mind to feel good about when this weird conversation was over.
"Okay, and?" You egged him on, pulling an Ieiri and mustering your most innocent smile by flashing some teeth.
Gojou visibly stiffened, and he ripped his finger away from your shoulder like he had been burned. He angled his body away from you slightly, making eye contact with you for the briefest of moments before he abruptly broke it. There was the sound of a cough. He lifted his hand to cover his mouth, and a series of mock coughs filtered out from the gaps in his fingers.
"I-just-really-like-you—" He cleared his throat in that obnoxiously self-important manner that the old Zenin man supposedly did. The Zenin grandpa only swung by Tokyo Jujutsu Tech once to see Gojou, and he never let any of you forget how insufferable he apparently found him.
The image of Gojou ridiculing and pointing at a rude old man made you chuckle unbidden, and Gojou made sure to let you know that you've provoked him, gasping dramatically as he put a hand to his chest.
"Sorry! I just remembered you said some old sorcerer clan man was here last week and you—"
Gojou gasped again, his expression scandalised. "I'm sweating just trying to confess the deep and secret feelings of my heart, and you're thinking of other men? You're unbelievable! So ungrateful, too."
The weird but entertaining Gojou you were familiar with had finally come up to the surface, and you couldn't help giving him a playful smack on the arm. "But you do like-like me, right?" you asked, still all smiles and teeth. Ieiri would be proud. You made a mental note to tell her all about it when you met for that fancy coffee date in Ginza. In front of the hot barista too, as a little treat.
Gojou raised a finger to his chin, pretending to reconsider. He hummed, as if trying to force a reaction out of you. When you failed to respond the way he felt was appropriate, he huffed. "If you like-like me too, then all is forgiven."
It was your turn to strike the thinker's pose, your chin too high and too proud to be doing any serious rumination. You were sure the smile on your face gave you away.

genre: fluff
info: non-sorcerer au; utahime is your neighbour
warnings: -
synopsis: you were only supposed to stay for a while, but utahime doesn't want you to leave.
word count: 1.3k
fluff-vember prompt: kindness from a stranger
fluff-vember 2023 masterlist is here.
Tumblr media
Iori Utahime
Utahime wasn't used to coming home to someone.
Ever since she moved out of her parent's house after graduating from high school, she quickly came to the conclusion that living alone suited her the best. In the first year of university, she had lived on campus and shared a dorm room with three other girls. Adjusting to communal living proved too irksome for her since she was an only child, and she decided to take on a part-time job at a local izakaya to afford a studio apartment some distance from her university.
She has lived that way ever since. Even when it was clearly more affordable to have a roommate to split the cost of rent with, she lived alone, and she was happy that way.
The window to her apartment was open, and there was a smell of hot oil mixed with chicken fat wafting out to the corridor as she approached. Utahime fought back the urge to recite the standard greeting phrase for when a customer walked in, an old habit from her waitressing years.
"Utahime-san, welcome back!" you called out from her kitchen, aware of her presence since the door creaked when she pushed it open. She removed her shoes in the entryway and pushed them to the side, before she stepped over the threshold into the living room.
"I'm home," she said, and it was beginning to taste familiar on her tongue.
You rushed to round the corner to the living room, wiping your hands on a patterned tea towel clipped onto the bottom hem of your shirt. "Dinner will be ready soon!" you said, shooing her away from the kitchen. Instead, Utahime tiptoed to look over your head, and you moved to block her view.
"Please don't worry about the mess! I'll take care of it after," you said, putting a hand on her arm to steer her towards the couch. She allowed you to usher her to her seat, laughing when you made a show of fluffing the decorative pillow for her.
Utahime collapsed into the plush backrest of the couch, suddenly feeling the tiredness of her day weighing on her. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched you scurry back into the kitchen."What are you making?" she asked, inhaling deeply and feeling a wave of nostalgia wash over her. The dinner you were in the process of making smelled like izakaya fare, and her stomach involuntarily rumbled at the thought.
"Yakisoba and karaage! And beer, of course," you said, smiling. "Making your faves as a little 'thank you' for letting me crash these past few weeks! Couldn't have done without your kindness, is all." With that, you disappeared back into the kitchen to get back to cooking.
This entire week, you were the one making the trips to the grocery store and cooking meals for two. Utahime, while perfectly capable of preparing herself something healthy and balanced to eat, strongly preferred not to. Buying ingredients and keeping the house stocked with essentials was a chore she never enjoyed, and you were the solution to her problem for the week, going so far as to even cover her share of the groceries when she refused to accept money for rent.
She knew she'd miss you once you moved into your own apartment.
It was a stroke of good fortune – 'serendipitous', just like the word of the day she received in her email in the morning – that the apartment you were supposed to move into was still occupied when you arrived. Sharing her space with you was a very different experience from when she was a student, crammed in a room with three other girls who made the room feel much smaller than it actually was. Living together was easy, with you. It was nice.
You emerged from around the corner with two plates of yakisoba, the glistening yolks of the fried eggs on top winking at her. Utahime immediately straightened in her seat. "Let me help," she said, getting up from the couch and ducking into the kitchen before you could stop her.
"No, I got it!" you said, jumping into the spot behind her to keep her from bringing the rest of the food to the dining table. She tightened her hands around the large platter of karaage, shouldering her way around your flailing arms. You laughed, and it made her laugh too, and she was confident she never felt so at home in any place before this moment.
"I hope you don't mind," you said, the stainless steel buffet-style serving pan Shouko had gotten her as a gag birthday gift making its appearance from the depths of one of her kitchen cabinets. She could count at least half a dozen cans of beer in it, shoved into the mass of crushed ice you filled it up with.
"It's alright. I wouldn't have a use for it otherwise," she said with a smile, meeting you halfway to hold up the other side of the serving pan. "You know I don't do much entertaining."
You removed the tea towel clipped to your shirt and laid it on the dining table in place of a trivet, and the two of you set the serving pan full of beer and ice down.
When you settled into the other chair, she was glad that she had taken her mother's advice and bought a pair of chairs instead of just one. She had insisted that she wouldn't be hosting any dinners, earnestly citing the size of her apartment and the singular cooker hob in her kitchen as her reasons to refuse hosting. Her mother gently insisted, and she furnished her apartment accordingly: two dining chairs, two full sets of cutlery and dinnerware, a couch and a dining table and a bed that were all big enough for two.
Utahime helped you clean up after dinner, even if you maintained that you were just paying her back for letting you stay. It felt natural to wash the dishes at the too-small sink, while you stood to her left as you dried them off before returning them to the dish rack beside the toaster oven.
You were sitting on the living room floor when she was done with her shower, your luggage open as you rolled up your clean clothes to slot them in between the bits and pieces of your belongings that you've retrieved from around her apartment. She took a long look around the place, and it looked quite lifeless without your things blending in with hers.
Maybe you were the other person her mother wanted her to make room for. Maybe—
"You don't have to go, you know?" She called your name and came to kneel beside you on the floor. You momentarily stopped fiddling with the stubborn hoodie sleeve that refused to cooperate with your rolling, and you looked up.
"If your cousin's still living in the other apartment with their boyfriend, you don't have to go," Utahime said, her heart oddly calm for a moment like this. Wasn't it supposed to be something nerve-wracking to ask someone to move in with you? There was a severe lack of those butterflies her coupled friends often spoke of, and she knew it was because things felt easy, natural with you.
She watched the realisation of what she asked dawn on you. Like the dark blue night with the coming of the first rays of the morning sun, your face brightened. You scooped up her hands in yours, squeezing. "Then I won't go," you said.
