Phases of the Moon

This lesson would be great in teaching a special education class the phases of the moon.

Grade: 4th/5th Special Education

Materials: Sharp Board, Chrome books for students.

Learning Standard:

5-PS2-1. Support an argument that the gravitational force exerted by Earth on objects is directed down.

5-ESS1-1. Support an argument that differences in the apparent brightness of the sun compared to other stars is due to their relative distances from Earth.

5-ESS1-2. Represent data in graphical displays to reveal patterns of daily changes in length and direction of shadows, day and night, and the seasonal appearance of some stars in the night sky.

Objective: The students will be able to compare the difference between waxing and waning in visual examples with 75% accuracy.

Introduction: Ask students what they notice in the sky at night. Discuss what the moon looks like and hypothesize what it feels like.

SMITHSONIAN LAUNCHES “JOURNEY THROUGH AN EXPLODED STAR” 3D INTERACTIVE EXPERIENCE ** Synopsis: Visualizations of complex telescopic data let users step inside astronomical phenomena to understand human connections to the cosmos. ** The Smithsonian today made available a new online interactive that allows users to explore a three-dimensional (3D) visualization of the remnants of a supernova, or exploded star. Designed for use by both general audiences and high school science classrooms, the free materials, available at s.si.edu/supernova, include an interactive simulation, a 360° video, and a multimedia instructional package. The project was created by the Smithsonian Center for Learning and Digital Access in conjunction with the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian (CfA), a collaboration that includes the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory (SAO). To create the visualizations, the project uses data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and Spitzer Space Telescope, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory’s Mayall Telescope, and the MIT/Michigan/Dartmouth Observatory’s Hiltner Telescope. “Journey” features the data visualization work of Kimberly Arcand, visualization and emerging technology lead for Chandra, which is operated on behalf of NASA by SAO. “All of that data has to be translated and processed in a way that humans can see, so it’s really important to be able to study our universe using different kinds of light,” said Arcand. “Each band of light gives you different information, so it’s like adding puzzle pieces to fit into the greater whole.” -- An online interactive simulation in which users navigate the fiery remains of a supernova and manipulate the real data to make their own visualization of the cosmos. Classroom Integration

This book would be great for 4th grade because it could be integrated to a Science Lesson. The reading level for the book is ages 5-9 so "Buddy" reading would be a the perfect way for 4th graders practice reading a text in preparation for reading to an assigned buddy in an earlier grade.

4-ESS1-1. Identify evidence from patterns in rock formations and fossils in rock formations and fossils in rock layers for changes in a landscape over time to support an explanation for changes in a landscape over time. [Clarification Statement: Examples of evidence from patterns could include rock layers with shell fossils above rock layers with plant fossils and no shells, indicating a change from land to water over time; and a canyon with different rock layers in the walls and a river in the bottom, indicating that over time a river cut through the rock.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include specific knowledge of the mechanism of rock formation or memorization of specific rock formations and layers. First kids need to understand how rock layers form, then learn about evidence and records left behind.
