Two weeks into tweeting at Netflix for a Midnight Mass physical release and I’m starting to worry that there is a younger generation that is so far removed from Blu-rays/DVDs that they don’t even understand the appeal of them over streaming. Blu-rays/DVDs = Blooper reel! Deleted scenes! Audio Commentary! Behind the Scenes/Making Of Features! Concept Art! More in-depth interviews! Sometimes hidden easter egg fun stuff! If you’ve ever searched on YouTube for the blooper reel or a deleted scene of a favorite show recently made, a lot of the time it’s only on YouTube because someone ripped it off their Blu-ray/DVD copy and uploaded it!! If the Blu-ray/DVD doesn’t exist in the first place, that doesn’t happen!! I’m just...are we really doing this? Are we really letting society as a whole forget about how fucking great owning a physical copy of your favorite show/movie is?!

Just starting the AD for The Fellowship of the Ring (it'll be the first time I've watched the theatrical cut in a while). So far it's pretty good, given the tall order it has. I understand the forced naming, or stating a character's name in their initial description, because it might be confusingly long until that character is clearly identified by that name.
I wondered how they would deal with fantastical races, and so far, I think they've done a good job. They leave the audience to fill in the blanks on elves, orcs are "gray-skinned" and "snaggle-toothed." When Frodo is introduced, the narrator says that, "like all hobbits he is short with big hairy feet."
I will say, I think they should have gone with a British narrator. The American accent is jarring, at least for me.

i have a love/hate relationship with the beginning of succession because like. obviously if it didn’t start, we wouldn’t have the rest of the show which is all objectively better than the beginning. but.
here’s how shiv is introduced. how do we make it clear to the audience what shiv’s whole character is? have a random political consultant she works with, for some reason, accompany her and her husband to dolce and gabanna to have a conversation that most definitely should have been an email.
and also like. the beginning makes it so unclear how long certain relationships have lasted. like how long have shiv and tom been together? shouldn’t he know by now how logan is about gifts? how long have marcia and logan been together? we learn in tern haven that it’s been a while but kendall’s rant about the trust and caroline talking to shiv later makes it seem like she’s new

🎬🎥 Katrina Chiovon talks about her life and career in the entertainment industry. "The Glitch," a comedic science fiction short that Katrina produced and directed, was shown at the Chelsea Film Festival. She's a very talented person. Problems with sound quality and a sound guy contracting COVID during production weren't the only obstacles Katrina overcame; she showed remarkable perseverance and resolve to finish the project.
🛠️Technical difficulties with the sound and the complete loss of all film progress because of an accident in the sound studio were among the many obstacles that the production of "The Glitch" had to overcome. Katrina had an unwavering commitment to her endeavor even though she had periods of frustration and wanted to quit. She stresses the significance of perseverance and creative problem-solving in hardship.
🏠💔As a young girl, Katrina dealt with a lot of upheaval and difficulty at home. Katrina was eventually placed in a foster home due to her family's situation. She loved her mother deeply, but their connection was strained because she couldn't understand her decisions in light of her life.
🎭🌆Katrina always felt a strong pull toward the arts, especially dancing and acting, even as a little girl. When Katrina recalls her love of acting from childhood, she remembers trying out for a role in a Brady Bunch movie. She arrived in New York City at seventeen and a half, seeking opportunities such as modeling for Ralph Lauren and Glamour magazine. Katrina overcame the dangers and difficulties of growing up street-smart and alone in the city.
🌟👼Despite Katrina’s many hardships and disturbing incidents while residing in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, she persevered and found solutions. Even though she was aware of the threats she faced, she attributes her survival to gut feelings and, maybe, a guardian angel. She exemplifies the strength and determination to follow one's passions despite challenges. Katrina also sought acting roles, landing parts in films including Vendetta Wounds and The City on the Edge. Her film debut was in Christopher Corulla's Old Secrets No Lies (2010). The picture had its world premiere that year at the Tribeca Film Festival, and it featured the late Vinnie Vella.

Armin finds your tapes
(This isn’t my best story but I didn’t want it to go to waste so I’m posting it :)
Armin had been staying with Eren for the past month due to renovations on his apartment. It wasn’t surprising he went to Eren since they’d been friends for as long as they could remember. You personally got along well with Armin and considered him to be your friend, rather than just your boyfriend’s friend. It also helped you were both film students.
Now that he was temporarily living in Erens house you saw a lot more of him. Often you two would hang out. Even when Eren wasn’t there, discussing your passions for filmmaking.
On this night you were in Erens room waiting for him to get back from his part time job. It was about 6:00pm and he got off at 10:00pm
Armin was in the living room, flicking through the large collection of dvds and tapes you had collected over the years. Unlike Eren, Armin also appreciated the older forms of entertainment and preferred DVDs over Netflix or Disney+.
Armins shuffling fingers stopped at a tape he didn’t recognise
“What’s this ‘Eren and me’ oh is this Y/N’s new project?” excitement filled him up as he pulled the tape out. He felt a feint sense of pride. That’s just the type of person he was, he cared so much about others goals and aspirations.
“She was probably going to show me this at some point, might aswell watch it now” he giggled to himself as he walked into his room with the tape in hand.
He sat down, turned his laptop on and slid the DVD in. He patiently waited as the video loaded. When it finally loaded he looked closely, turning the brightness up to really see the screen.
‘Ngh~ E-Eren fuck…’ the image of you getting fucked senseless came on Armins screen. His cheeks were blazing as he scrambled to shut the laptop. Suddenly he was so aware of his breathing- no it was more like panting.
Even after a few minutes had passed he couldn’t shake the lewd image from his mind. He wasn’t entirely sure how to react. It wasn’t like he hadn’t heard you two going at it through the thin walls before, but actually seeing it was so different. Especially since it was in such an intimate way. It wasn’t just cheaply recorded on a cellphone, no. It was filmed with a camcorder and put on a DVD. It was something to be cherished, and yet he had just invaded any privacy the tape held.
Armin had never regarded you in any other way than a friend. But he still couldn’t help the way his pants tightened and his face heated at the sight of you in such a vulnerable position.
As if something possessed him he opened the laptop again. The video had paused and it was a still image. Your mouth agape and eyes half rolled back. Eren had a fistful of your hair as he yanked your drooping head up, forcing you to look at the camera. Armins finger hovered over the space bar. He knew this would be pernicious to your friendship, the smart thing to do would be put the tape back and pretend he’d never seen it.
But sometimes ‘the smart thing’ doesn’t win. He pressed down and allowed the video to play.
Armin wasn’t particularly well versed, sexually speaking. He had only a few sexual experiences. Each time he had sex or engaged in anything of the sort he felt underwhelmed and disinterested.
This was not like those other times, his entire body felt like it was on fire. He forced his mouth shut as he intently watched. You were getting pounded at an ungodly pace. Tears were forming in your eyes. Suddenly Eren pulled out of you, the whine you emitted at the loss of contact made Armins pants grow even tighter. Eren walked out of the frame only to return with a lit candle. Is he trying to up the ambience??
An audible gasp left Armins mouth when Eren poured the hot wax onto your back. Your yelps of pain only seemed to up Erens ambition as he placed the candle down and began spreading the hot wax with his hands. The unholy sounds leaving your mouth left Armin gobsmacked. Surely you couldn’t be enjoying that? It looked so… painful.
He felt deeply ashamed at the way his dick practically jumped at the sight of you in pain. With lack of better judgment he unbuckled his belt and started pulling his pants down his thighs.
He shuddered at the contact between his sweaty palm and his dick. Then he positioned the laptop on his thighs so he could watch as he touched himself.
As Eren wiped the now solidifying wax of your back, your knees began to buckle from the intense and prolonged ecstasy you had been denied so many times. “Please… Eren” you panted in a desperate tone “I just want to cum” you pleaded to your boyfriend.
Erens face contorted into one of reassurance, a misleading smile plastered on his face. “Cmon sweetie, you can hold out for a bit longer” Eren said as he lifted your limp head to face the camera. “You have to put on a show for the camera, right? Fucking slut” he whispered in your ear, still holding that smile. You weakly nodded your head, making Eren smile even wider.
Armin blushed furiously as you looked straight into the camera. It was almost as if you were staring into his soul, like you knew what he was doing. This sent a wave of guilt through him, causing him to still his tugging hand.
Eren went back behind you and began pounding again at that ungodly pace. The lewd sounds of skin slapping and squelching drove Armin crazy and he started moving his hand up and down.
Armins hips were bucking, he desperately needed something more than his hand. He took his thumb and ran it over his throbbing tip. Pathetic whines left his mouth. It truly was a filthy sight to see. THE Armin Arlet jerking off to his best friend’s sex tape.
He kept his hand at the same rhythm of Eren pounding into you. His own Broken whimpers covered the sound of the tape.
The pressure was building too fast, he had to throw his head back to stop himself from cumming immediately. The deep pleasure in his gut started spreading through his whole body. At this point he was spasming like a mad man, biting on his free hand to stop himself from moaning. Although it was pretty ineffective as his whimpers filled the room. Armin wondered what you must think, hearing all the obscene noises he is making from the other room.
The thought of you catching him sent him over the edge. The scene was similar to a balloon exploding. His wild hips bucking as he shot ropes of hot cum from his cock. incomprehensible sentences were being spat from his mouth as he emptied himself all over his bed and chest.
After about a minute of cumming and shaking, he gradually calmed down. Minus his irregular and heavy breathing he was finished. His laptop was still open but the video had finished. He wasn’t sure when the tape had ended. Grabbing the box of tissues next to his bed, he wiped his lower abdomen. ‘I should put this back’ he thought as he looked at the DVD that was poking out of his laptop.
The end xx
I take requests or anything (as long as they’re AOT men 🙏🙏)

Thank You, TheShadowedOne1
I’m not aware how many of you guys in the Bionicle Tumblr knew this person let alone watched his content, but yesterday it was informed to the greater Bionicle community that Nathan Paisie, known better online under his pseudonym TheShadowedOne1, an aspiring film-maker, stop-motion creator, hobbyist youtuber and decently notable member in the Bionicle community, passed away in the last november at the age of 28 to (at the time of this writing) unknown causes. In the Bionicle community, TheShadowedOne1 (which is how I will mostly be refering him as for the rest of this post) was notable for his series of Bionicle stop-motions, compliations of the Bionicle movies and for being one of the first notable content creators in the Bionicle Youtube community (also known as Biotube) who greatly helped to shape the landscape of the Youtube part of the fandom.
TheShadowedOne1 was one of the first big stop-motion content creators in the Bionicle community. He started to make videos in 2008 at the age of 13. During this time he made notable (although very rudimentary) videos such as “Phantoka” or “the Makuta”. Over the time he’d make some relatively notable stop-motion series, including the SALVATION series and the more comedic “Takadox and Pridak” series, both of which gained traction in the community and made him even bigger name in it than he was before.  While a lot of his eariler works were a bit rudimentary, they were still enjoyable, decently impressive (especially for an at the time younger audience), and more importantly influental as one of the first big Bionicle stop-motion channels that inspired many other fans on creating their own stories and short-films. TheShadowedOne1s passion towards storytelling, making movies and Bionicle was always clearly in front, and it’d only become brighter as he matured and became more skilled.
As he grew older, TheShadowedOne1s skillsets would slowly improve and passion towards film-making only grew. As years went by, his stop-motion projects would become better crafted and more ambitious over time, each being more impressive than the last. TheShadowedOnes1 passion for filmmaking would lead him to eventually even film-making at college, as his big life-long dream was to create movies professionally. All skills he cultivated both from education and working on personal projects would lead in him making some really impressive stopmotion shortfilms including  Bionicle: The Protodermis Mine,Takanuva Meets The Shadowed One or Voporak. These stop motions were technically rather impressive, with some of them using surprisingly indepth practical effects and tricks to make them work. In particular Voporak used some really impressive wire-work in it’s action scenes, something TheShadowedOne1 actually made a making of video on. In addition to his technical skills, TheShadowedOne1 was also pretty skilled at voice-acting and humor, both skills he’d utilize well in in his “Ask x” series where viewers could send question for a Bionicle character and he’d answer in character. The “Ask x”  videos would mix light stop motion with humorous writing and TheShadowedOne1 giving each character a fitting performance. In particular his performances the the characters Vezon and Zaktann (both of whom he had voiced numerous times) were not only great, but fit to the characters to a T.
But while all of his later work was quite impressive, it was little more but practice for his passion project and what he most likely planned to becoming his Magnum Opus in the Bionicle stop-motion community: that being an adaptation of Time Trapped. Most likely inspired by to at least some extent by Noah Productions two stop-motion adaptations of the first two Ignition arcs as well as other similar ventures by other creators, TheShadowedOne1 really wanted to make an adaptation to the fanfavorite Bionicle novel that would give this beloved piece of Bionicle mythos the respect it deserved. In 2017, TheShadowedOne1 would release a “trailer” for the project that showcased the final battle of the story, which did earn decent traction among the stop-motion parts of the community. This trailer wasn’t meant to show clips that were meant to end in the final product, but instead act as a pitch or proof of concept, with the film being worked on from scratch. The adaptation would be something that TheShadowedOne1 worked on and off, with at least once starting the project from the very beginning, as he wanted it to be the best it could possibly be and the ultimate culmination of his filmmaking skills. TheShadowedOne1s biggest and most ambitious project was something he was sadly never able to complete, and there’s a good chance he never got to start properly on it, as he was rather busy with school, his personal life and working on other projects, including the finale for his SALVATION series, and said many times he wanted to be done with both his studies and SALVATION before he would start Time Trapped, as he wanted to commit to the project as much as he could and have as little distractions as possible beyond obligations in his work and personal life.
Besides his stop-motions TheShadowedOne1 did make quite a lot of other content on his youtube channel as well. In fact, from 2018 or so onward, most of his later videos being other content as he worked on his larger projects in background. His most notable videos in the Bionicle community weren’t his stop-motions, but rather compilations of the first three Bionicle movies, with a video that the complied first three Bionicle Movies in chronological order into one long film being his most viewed Bionicle video. He’d also make compilations, such as compliations of character themes, compliations showcasing every time a character was on screen in the movies or even sillier compliations like “Every time the characters say Takuas name” or “every time the characters say the word mask”. TheShadowedOne1 also made countdowns and was dabbling into other scripted content as he started “Olisi Other Paths” series where he’d present what would have happened if certain events would’ve gone differently in the Bionicle story. He also made videos where he built different characters, a few MOC showcases and even quite a few shitposts or other shorter sillyness. TheShadowedOne1s deep passion in movies and filmmaking showed in him making small videos or shitposts of his favorite movies, most notably the Jurassic Park films, which were heavily formative to him. He even posted his two student films to his channel: the Dastards, a tribute to the cowboy westerns of the past, and Teach, a film adapting the life of the notorious pirate Edward Teach.
In addition to his creative contributions and general output in his channel TheShadowedOne1 was also rather notable for being one of the biggest, most notable and most vocal fans of the Dark Hunters, as well as fan of Bionicle villains in general. In particular, he was a big fan of The Shadowed One (go figure), as he was his favorite character in the entire series and practically his online avatar. Later on he somewhat started to separate himself from the character, even starting to use his own face on camera for update videos and such, but even then he never completely divorced from the character and had him as part of his online persona and identity in the Bionicle community. TheShadowedOne1 often talked about his fondness for the character in his videos and had the character to play pivotal roles in his stop-motion stories like the aforementioned Takadox and Pridak or Takanuva meets The Shadowed One. He tended to interact with fancontent or participated in discussion involving the character both on his own channel as well as other places in the community he ventured to such as content creators he liked or forums he used. In addition, TheShadowedOne1 voiced the character both in his own stop motion films and in numerous other fan projects, including Ignition 2.
I’m rather shocked and deeply saddened by the news. For me, TheShadowedOne1 was easily one of my favorite Bionicle Youtubers, as well as one of my favorite content creators in the community at large. I watched a lot of Bionicle stop-motions growing up, and while I’m not sure if TheShadowedOnes videos belonged to these videos I watched as a kid, he probably inspired a lot of the channels I did watch. Eventually I discovered his channel, and ended up enjoying his content, though it faded away from my memory for some time. While it’s possible I had found his channel a year or two before, I remember rediscovering him at latest in 2017/2018, thanks to his Time Trapped trailer. I was very impressed with not only the trailer itself but the mere idea of someone wanting to adapt one of my favorite Bionicle stories into an animated movie. Ever since seeing that trailer, I continued to visit his channel from time to time, to see if he had done anything cool or funny recently, or if he had made any progress with Time Trapped. Sometimes I watched his channel more, other times less, but it was still a channel I’d revisit from time to time, and interact with at least once per year from 2017/2018 onwards.
As a longtime fan of his, I deeply loved TheShadowedOne1 channel. His passion towards filmmaking, storytelling and Bionicle showed in almost everything he did. It was present in his stop motions, it was present in his countdowns, his casual talk videos and even his shitposts. Even if his first videos weren’t the most technically impressive and even if a lot of his later stuff were compliations or shitposts, they were still enjoyable, and fun to watch. It was a channel that felt like a safe rock for me, something I could always go back to whenever I was in mood to watch some good Bionicle content or even watch a shitpost or two to wind down my time.
And I geniunely enjoyed his content a lot, no matter what type they were: I loved Takadox and Pridak for its humor and surprisingly bittersweet ending, I found his stopmotions such as Protodermis Mine or Voporak technically impressive works of the medium and was waiting excitedly for the Time Trapped adaptation, no matter when it’d come. I found his countdowns to be informative, I found his compliations to be useful in revisting moments of the movies and I thought the videos he built the models and talked about characters were really interesting to listen to. I liked the concept he had for Olisi Other Worlds, found the “Ask [x]” series to be hilarious and entrataining, and even enjoyed watching his shitposts from time to time. Whether it was his storytelling, his craft, his humor or his opinions, TheShadowedOne1s content is something I deeply adored, and enjoyed. Helped that the man behind the channel seemed to be a pretty decent and cool dude based on the glimpses I saw in his videos and other online presence.
But not only did I love TheShadowedOne1 for his passion and content, there was another reason I loved him as well: his passion towards the Dark Hunters and The Shadowed One. Every fandom has those fans that get associated with a particular character to the point they become the representative of that character, and that their love becomes part of that characters legacy, just as much as it becomes their legacy. And TheShadowedOne1 was the The Shadowed One fan. Whenever I thought of the channel, I thought of his love for the leader of Dark Hunters. And whenever I thought of The Shadowed One I thought of the channel and person behind it. The character and the content creator were so intermingled in my brain I associated them with each other extremely strongly.
But not only was TheShadowedOne1 the The Shadowed One fan, he was more or less the voice for The Shadowed One in Bionicle fan projects. While yes, I did enjoy his voice acting for other character, they weren’t the only takes of those characters I enjoyed. His voice as The Shadowed One was not only his definite performance by a long shot but also the definite version of the character in my eyes and ears. The deep sinister voice he did for The Shadowed One fit the character perfectly, and his acting was really solid as well. In fact, I loved TheShadowedOnes1 voice for the character so much that I actually suggested to the Mangai Projects director Max that he should try to get TheShadowedOne1 to voice the character into the series. Max did like my suggestion, but I’m not sure if anything concrete came out of it.
And just. That passion, that love TheShadowedOne1 had towards The Shadowed One just has been very influental for me. I loved how passionate he was of his favorite characters in his main fandom, and I feel it inspired me to be passionate towards the characters and stories I love and hold dearly. While I’m a naturally passionate person and want to lovemail my faves as much as possible, given how the internet sometimes feels outright hostile to geniune passion and love, it’s nice to see other people who dedicate their online presence to a specific character, and show how much that character means to them in everything they do online. Seeing the passion he had inspired me to keep going and share my passion towards the characters and stories that mean a lot to me, even if the rest of the world seemed like it was against me in doing so.
It saddens me that all that is gone. That the person who I looked up to and whose content I adored is gone. In spite of never knowing TheShadowedOne1 personally, instead only looking at his creations at far, loosing him still stings. Loosing someone who affected me deeply feels like loosing a part of myself, no matter if the relationship was only onesided parasocial admiration. And that’s how it feels. Knowing that one of my favorite content creators in this fandom and a huge inspiration for me is dead feels so absurd, so unreal and so agonizing.
I’m saddened that we will never see SALVATION 6 or Time Trapped released. I’m saddened that we won’t see any more shitposts or countdown videos. I’m saddened that we won’t get more Olisi Other Worlds beyond it’s first episode. I’m saddened that we won’t hear TheShadowedOne1 voice TSO in fanprojects such as the Mangai Project or Bionicle Illiad. There’s a possibility we could hear him voice the character one last time in Bionicle Ignition:Battle for Power as he was cast to reprise his role, but even then that isn’t guaranteed.
But I’m not just sad of loosing TheShadowedOne1, the content creator and figure in the Bionicle community. I’m sad of loosing Nathan, the person behind the online persona, in spite of never knowing him. I’m saddened that someone as young, talented and passionate as him died before he was able to fulfill his dreams. I’m saddened someone who wanted to leave a mark on the form of entertaiment he loved was never able to get into the industry. I’m saddened a promising young filmmaker wasn’t able to create the next classic that would be loved by generations to come, just as he loved the movies that inspired him. I’m saddened he wasn’t able to continue his enjoying his hobbies and passions.  I’m saddened that his friends, family and loved ones who lost a person they cared a lot about. I’m saddened about all the opportunitnies and possibilities in his future that were robbed off him because his life was cut short. I’m saddened that he wasn’t able to life a long and fulfilling life.
Life is fleeting thing. While life may feel long, in reality it is just a little drop in the ocean, that will be snuffed out before we even realize. When we live in moment day to day lives we forget that humans aren’t immortal. We forget that eventually people will die, and that eventually the journey we call ‘‘life’‘ will reach it’s destination. But we also forget that people die young. We often think of death as something that happens to old people, while forgetting that death can happen to anyone. The Grim Reaper doesn’t choose his harvest based on age, but instead can come to anyone even during the moments they last expect it. Death can be merciless, it can be random, it can be unpredictable. So cherish your life and cherish the life of those who matter to you, and show how much you appreciate them before its too late. Live to your fullest and like every day was your last, because you never know when it will be the end.
And to Nathan.Thank you for everything you did in this community. Whether you knew it or not, you were one of the most important building blocks in making the Bionicle fandom what it is today, especially on the Youtube side. You influenced many people in ways you probably couldn’t imagine.. You helped fostering a community, and was present there as one of it’s most important and prominent pillars. Whether you realize or not probably helped people find friendships and communities, You will be dearly missed by me and the many other members in this community who enjoyed and were inspired both by your work and you as a person.
Thank you and rest in peace.

Black History Spotlight: The original movie poster for The Green-Eyed Monster
Last year, Special Collections and Archives at the University of Iowa Libraries acquired items to form a new collection: the Black Film and Television Collection. In honor of Black History Month, we’re shining a spotlight on a different item from this collection. This week, we’re taking a look at one of the collection’s earliest (and rarest) items: the original poster for the 1919 film The Green-Eyed Monster.
The Library of Congress estimates that 75% of all silent films have been lost, and that number unfortunately includes many of the first films made for Black audiences. The Green-Eyed Monster is one such film. Since we don’t have access to the movie itself, marketing materials like this poster offer a vital glimpse into a formative period of cinematic history and a history that was very nearly lost. Amid a culture of violent racism, systemic inequality, and segregation, Black artists behind and in front of the camera offered their audiences a look at the possibilities ahead.
During the era of segregation, Black audiences were already barred from most movie showings, and there were only a few movie houses open specifically for Black viewers. To see movies like The Green-Eyed Monster, they would have had to attend separate, late-night screenings called “midnight rambles.” But attend they did—there was a demand for what came to be called “race films,” and about 500 movies were released to meet it. During the daytime, theaters might show movies like the notoriously racist Birth of a Nation, but at the stroke of midnight, Black audiences could gather to appreciate Black artistry.
Where does The Green-Eyed Monster fit in?
The Green-Eyed Monster was produced by Norman Studios in Jacksonville, Florida. And while the film featured an all-Black cast, the studio that produced it was owned by a white filmmaker, Richard E. Norman, who sought to cater to an untapped audience. To make his first race film, Norman retooled the script for one of his previous films, The Wrecker, and hired Black actors for the roles. Norman Studios would go on to produce seven more feature-length films with all-Black casts, but the studio died out during the rocky transition to “talkies.”
So what exactly was The Green-Eyed Monster about? While the film itself is lost, the broad strokes of the story remain. As the title indicates, the plot revolves around jealousy, both romantic and professional. Two friends who work for rival rail companies end up falling for the same woman—and competing for the same lucrative contract. To settle both conflicts, these friends stake everything on a race on rails. Given that the poster aims to entice audiences with an “$80,000.00 train wreck,” it’s safe to assume that in this case, the track to true love is a perilous one.
While this poster and the film it advertises represent a form of progress, the most impactful works in the genre of race film were produced by Black filmmakers at Black-owned studios.
Lincoln Studios and Oscar Micheaux
In the early years of cinema, the industry wasn’t centralized in Los Angeles the way it is today, and production companies could be found in cities across the country. One such studio was Lincoln Motion Picture Company, which began in Lincoln, Nebraska, in 1916 and lasted until 1921. Its founders were brothers, Noble Johnson and George Perry Johnson, and their 1916 debut was the first-ever race film, The Realization of a Negro’s Ambition. This is widely credited as the first film ever to portray the experience of middle-class Black characters. Its story is as aspirational as its title: a dreamer strikes out to make it in the oil business, excels, and returns to his family a wealthy man.
The same segregation policies that led to the phenomenon of midnight rambles made it especially difficult for a production company aimed at a Black audience to maintain its bottom line. Again, that’s not because these films lacked an interested viewership; their distribution was limited by the racist policies of the time, and so were their profits. While Lincoln was a short-lived venture, its impact can’t be overstated. By the time the studio that originated race films closed down, another Black leader had found his calling in film.
Oscar Micheaux’s Chicago studio, Micheaux Film Corporation, was one such company. Throughout his decades-long career, Micheaux produced 40 films. His features showed Black audiences a world they recognized: a place of struggle and striving, where racism was a constant reality. He also wrote Black characters they could identify with, fully human in contrast to the caricatures in white films of the time.
There are so many other stories to be found in the Black Film and Television Collection. Next week, we’ll dive deeper into Micheaux, his Midwestern connections, and the continued rise of race films in the first half of the twentieth century.

rating + content warnings: "the nona incident!" will be intended for a mature/adult audience. content warnings include strong language, drug/alcohol use and addiction, sex and sexual content, an abusive relationship, biphobia and homophobia, compulsory heterosexuality, misogyny, graphic violence, and death. there will be other content warnings i have yet to nail down; just know that this story will be on the (for lack of better word) grittier side, so if you aren't comfortable with some generally disturbing content, this probably won't be for you.

it’s 1985, and there are two things on may costa’s mind, the same two things that have always been on her mind for as far back as she can remember: making it in the professional music industry, and being with her best friend since childhood, nona darnell. but as a guitarist with no band and few friends to speak of, stuck working as a local music store clerk, and with nona busy living an exciting life on the sunset strip with her too-cool boyfriend, duke strickland, may is about as far from those two things as is possible to be. that is, until nona invites her to accompany duke’s growing band, overconsumption, on their first tour—accompany the band, and her. with this opportunity, may is determined to carve out a place for herself in both the rock legendarium and in nona’s life, but success has unexpected consequences, especially in the untamed world of rock ‘n’ roll.

the thing about tni! is that it's a very self-indulgent project—like, even more self-indulgent than usual, which is saying something—so the themes and ideas explored in it are pretty much all things somewhat personal to or specifically geared towards myself. for the most part, they all boil down to one of two things: bisexuality and rock 'n' roll. basically, tni! is meant, in part, to be an exploration of both the good and the bad of the 80s rock scene from the point of view of a closeted bisexual woman who feels out of place in the world she loves. this does make may somewhat of a self-insert, i suppose, but i don't really consider her a self-insert, because she's not meant to be me? she's more meant to be an avenue for me to express my feelings towards the concepts presented in the story. if that makes sense. to get back to the point, tni! is more or less just me projecting onto and living vicariously through a fake 80s rock band for an indeterminate number of pages. boom, there's the theme.
𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 + 𝐜𝐨. ⋆。°✩
may costa: a talented but lonely guitarist from vermillion spring, california in search of a band and respite from her own dislike of herself
nona darnell: the treasured girlfriend of duke strickland with aspirations of becoming a photographer and filmmaker
duke strickland: overconsumption's charismatic frontman with a famously kind and humble reputation
tommy salem: overconsumption's reserved bassist with a penchant for nighttime motorcycle rides
logan vaughn: overconsumption's multitalented drummer who started it all in the first place
rj patterson: overconsumption's rhythm guitarist who loves stirring up conflict for the sheer fun of it
𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 ⋆。°✩
the short answer to what inspired tni! is music (shocker)! if you haven't put it together yet, i live for the rock music of the 80s (and 70s, and 90s and onward, but especially the 80s). a huge amount of the inspiration for this story came from me listening to my favorite music, and i specifically decided to make this an actual wip while listening to the use your illusion albums by guns n' roses on a drive home. from there, the ideas just sort of collected and collected, which has kinda... never happened for me before? So that was really cool (and probably only because i daydream about being a rockstar way too often).
beyond just the music itself, i've also gathered a lot of ideas and inspiration from researching my favorite bands! i went through a span of time a month or two ago where i was just obsessed with reading up on the history of the bands i love (and i still am, honestly), and a lot of the stories i discovered—there were some crazy-ass stories—had a big influence on some of the plot points and the overall "vibe" of tni!.
𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭 ⋆。°✩
⋆ bad obsession - guns n' roses
⋆ nona - mötley crüe
⋆ magic touch - aerosmith
⋆ hide your heart - kiss
⋆ rocket queen - guns n' roses
⋆ detroit rock city - kiss
⋆ patience - guns n' roses
⋆ you could be mine - guns n' roses
⋆ thrills in the night - kiss
⋆ don't cry (original) - guns n' roses
⋆ mr. brownstone - guns n' roses
⋆ get in the ring - guns n' roses
⋆ sweet child o' mine - guns n' roses
⋆ too young to fall in love - mötley crüe
𝐟𝐮𝐧 𝐟𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐬 ⋆。°✩
⋆ the plot of tni! was originally going to be a lot more... extreme? it still gets pretty extreme as it is now, but may used to be a way different character in a way that made the plot much more horrific before i realized that that wasn't the kind of story i wanted to tell with these characters
⋆ may is probably one of my favorite main characters i've ever written, so you guys have that to look forward to <3 facets of her character are also inspired by slash (the person, not the fanfic, since i know this is tumblr lmao), because... i love slash... shock and awe, i guess
⋆ this is my first attempt at realistic and historical fiction
⋆ nona is the first of two ocs i have that unintentionally have the same names as characters from the locked tomb series (maybe you'll meet the second someday? who knows... not me)
so, that's "the nona incident!" if you read this far, thank you so much, i really appreciate it! i'm not new to tumblr, but i am new to writeblr, so i'm not 100% sure of how to go about connecting with people and making friends here, so if any of this seemed interesting to you, or we have some common interests, or you just wanna chat, feel free to reach out in any way you want, and i'd be super happy to talk!

Fake Dream Au
Characters (that I drew so far):
Vincent Vox is a young talented actor who comes from a long line of aspiring actors and filmmakers. He’s the middle child of his family. He had one, actual, friend (Alastor) before having a “falling” out with him. He’s around thirteen years old. Vox has heterochromia (left is red and right is blue). He’s not blind in one eye, he has blurry vision in both eyes (he wears eye contact). He doesn’t like talking about the scar—can’t remember. Why can’t? Remember. Snarks and anything technology are his special interests and loves to talk about them for hours (usually mostly mainly with Papermint). He like getting fan mails—but there are some weird ones… Like telling him to run and stuff.
“Papermint” Marcus is Vox’s assistant (like in the show) but he’s older than Vox. He acts like Vox’s babysitter—more like a very nervous cousin/older brother to Vox. He does know how the scar happened. He’s best friends, they just took him in, with Kitty and Melissa. Fifteen years old. Vox was his first friend. Papermint is connected and nervous about everything, especially with Vox. He does know about Vox’s deep depression and his wanting to be noticed/loved by his family. Papermint was in a foster home when growing up (it wasn’t a good time for him). Papermint was the nickname that the foster home children gave him due to his birthmarks and being mixed race, but Vox calls him “Papermint” in a different way (because Vox usually sees Marcus with a lot of different colours of paper and he knows that Marcus likes mint).
Kitty, Fizzarolli’s younger sister, is an assistant like Papermint and Melissa. She has more of a free allowance than anyone else due to Fizzarolli’s boyfriend, Asmodeus, and her older brother being very popular and important to the studio and social media. She had brought in Asmodeus because she realized she and other people were being paid under amounts that were legally allowed. She likes to collect tall, very nervous people like Pokémon Cards. She’s also a backup actor. She’s usually in a clown (different height) hat because she wants to be like her older brother. She has a big family. Kitty is sixteen years old and likes to hold Vox like a wet cat for Melissa.
Melissa is the oldest of the teenage assistants. Her family was the “perfect” family before Melissa was taken away and given to her grandparents. She’s very nervous about everything and it being perfect. Her grandparents are very caring and loving people. She’s slowly getting used to not being “perfect”. She loves Kitty’s hugs. She’s seventeen years old. Lord, give her a hug and 100x more love—give them all loves and hugs. Melissa is also the new top model for Velvette.
The Studio:
Is set a modern time and mainly focuses on the studio and Vox. The studio is a Christian studio and very popular. Vox, Anthony (Angel Dust), Vaggie, Charlie, Arackniss, Charlotte Boom (Cherri Bomb), Husker, Molly, (Sir) Pentious, and Emily are very popular teenagers/kids in their shows and movies and are the main casts in them. Alastor is not in the any of the shows nor the studio. Rosie and Mimzy do talk about Alastor watching the shows only that had Vox in them. Niffty is the janitor of the studio and does report back to Alastor if asked by him. It probably best to keep Alastor and Vox away from each other. Valentino is one of the writers and artists of the studio due to his surprisingly good artistic skills. Velvette is the top designer in the studio (why is Sera allowing teenagers to have adults jobs?). Adam, Eve, Lute, Lilith, (St) Peter, Lucifer, Carmilla, Zestial, (Archangel) Micheal and the other seven archangels, and Zeezi are popular adults in the shows and movies they’re in. The Egg Boiz are the children that Pentious babysits (maybe Sera is not paying all of the child actors properly or it just for high school).
.
.
.
.
But it’s all fake. It’s just a dream. A nice dream. Vox was stuck in a tiny room with a tiny window. The room is full of snarks related stuff. Don’t look out of the window again, Vox. Go back asleep, Vox. At least, everyone is nicer there.

Very nervous Voxxy.

Smoll snak and big ee
Tumblr media
1, this is the first time Papermint and Vox met (the adults just threw the both of them in a room). “Uh…” (doesn’t know what a 10-12 year old actor kid would like to talk about) “D-do you… uhm… li—like ocean creatures…?”
2, “I loves sharks.”
Tumblr media
3, hours later or like 30 minutes, both are talking snarks facts.
Tumblr media
It’s just Vincent.
There’s no Vox.
There’s no talented young actor anywhere.
Just a small room full of shark stuffs and a closed off window.
“Everything is fake.”
“Don’t look out of the window.”
“You know what’s out there.”
“You’re trap.”
“Sleep.”
“At least, everything would look better.”
And that is all I have for now. ♥︎ In joy your day/night.

'There’s something rather extraordinary at the core of the new Netflix miniseries RIPLEY, based upon the famed 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith. It’s what drives antihero Thomas Ripley (Andrew Scott) to covet the lifestyle of the rich. It has less to do with any glamour and glitz, or even access to Italian villas, fine dining, and tailored clothing, and all to do with sheer relief. The relief that comes from never having to worry about money, the nagging to make more of it, or living the fear of losing it. When con artist Tom Ripley reaches his status of privilege and money, he achieves a zen-like calm, even if he’s achieved his goals via notorious means. It’s access, sure, to better living, finer accommodations, and designer clothes, but mostly it seems to be access to peace of mind that this thief has never known.
And that’s why filmmaker Steven Zaillian’s eight-episode miniseries is so strong. It strips away all the easy things for an audience to drool over in it and concentrates on motive. Why does Tom do what he does? The landscapes and fine wines are incidental. It’s what having money does to his headspace that is dramatized here with such cleverness.
The story remains the same from the book and previous filmed adaptations: Tom Ripley is asked by the wealthy Herbert Greenleaf (Kenneth Lonergan) to convince his prodigal son Dickie (Johnny Flynn) to return to NYC from Italy. But Tom’s introduction to Dickie’s leisurely lifestyle in the coastal city of Atrani turns out to be catnip for his former college classmate.
Still, this is a film about cons and crimes, not country splendor and that is why Zaillian shot his adaptation in black and white. He doesn’t want the camera lusting over sunny days, tanned torsos, and electric nightlife like director Anthony Minghella did with his lingering shots of such things in 1999’s THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. In Minghella’s film, everything was glamorous, especially bronzed playboy Dickie (Jude Law) and his leonine girlfriend Marge Sherwood (Gwyneth Paltrow). It was easy to see why the impressionable and naïve Tom (Matt Damon) would become so mesmerized. Heck, Damon all but played the character as a kid in a candy store, wanting to gorge himself on everything associated with the one percent.
Not Scott. He plays Tom as a desperate criminal who wants the calm that comes with a fat wallet. And Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning, playing Dickie and Marge this go-round, are hardly worth putting on a pedestal. As directed by Zaillain, their rich characters are dead-eyed, soulless zombies. These two world travelers are not bright, nor personable, and far from gorgeous. What they are, are the type of entitled rich kids who sleepwalk through their lives of privilege, so used to daddy’s money that they aren’t impressed by it one iota.
And wow, is this couple lacking in any discernible talent. Dickie wants to be a painter but his work is simply awful, while would-be writer Marge’s poems and prose are wholly mediocre, as are the bland photographs she’s taken during her time in Atrani. Tom likes them less as people and more as aspirational figures; those who never have to scrape and claw to survive. These two dullards just sit around their homes all day with nary a worry. It’s a state of bliss that Tom would love to know. So much so, that he’ll kill to experience it.
The black and white cinematography is Zaillien’s way of showcasing how Ripley delineates his “have and have not” sensibilities. It’s also there to underline the miniseries noir-ish tendencies as once murder enters the frame, the remainder of the series becomes a cat-and-mouse game between Ripley and an intrepid Italian detective ((Maurizio Lombardi) on his trail. The black-and-white palate is also there to underline that this is essentially a dark comedy. It’s pretty funny watching Tom have to continue his life of labor once he starts killing people as it takes a ton of effort to dispose of bodies and keep track of his ever-mounting series of lies. The poor bastard was already huffing and puffing enough as it was simply following Dickie up and down the various staircases they encountered through the winding streets of the city, and now homicide is really making him put in the work!
At times, Scott’s performance recalls a jittery Anthony Perkins in his male ingenue days, but more often than not, his Tom is played close to the vest. Even when Dickie’s loutish friend Freddie (a scene-stealing Eliot Sumner) comes a calling, suspicious about why Dickie has disappeared, Scott’s Tom remains stone cold. And it’s darkly humorous how he returns a square, glass ashtray he weaponizes to its proper place on an end table. He adjusts it just so.
It’s always easy to vilify the rich, of course. and Hollywood has done it time and time again, from YOU CAN’T TAKE IT WITH YOU in 1938 to SALTBURN this past Christmas. RIPLEY may be the third filmed adaptation of Highsmith’s classic book but I think it’s the best of all of them due to its slyly subtle nastiness and emphasis on Tom’s truest motive. Class warfare has rarely been as apparent as it is here, seen in black and white by both Tom and Zaillian’s camera.'

#SAVE WARRIOR NUN
Avatrice is the best intentional slowburn wlw ship out there (you can’t change my mind). I will fight for them and Warrior Nun always for several reasons:
1) this representation is the kind we’ve been missing for decades (at the very least)
2) the team behind the show has shown that they’re willing to fight with us
3) this fandom is willing to take the time to fight passionately without blaming anyone but the people actually responsible - the network that didn’t promote the show and cancelled it despite good numbers
4) this show helped so many people (especially people like me who have struggled to reconcile their religion and their sexuality)
5) this show is female led and tells a story where the main storyline isn’t the women fighting for leadership positions or being catty unnecessarily
6) I love found family stories bc so many people can relate to them. We all find people who complete us and have our back no matter what and they aren’t always the people society says should do that
7) this show is genuinely just good. I’m studying film/communications rn and this show has all the components of the best ensemble shows:
a) strong and diverse characters who are not one dimensional or stereotypical (diverse in terms of race but also much more: personality, aspirations, paradigms, backgrounds, etc.)
b) conflict within the main group but also outside of it that play off of each other without being the same thing
c) major character development that is logical and well paced
d) realistic dialogue. It’s scripted but the jokes land when they’re supposed to and fall flat when they’re supposed to
e) the relationships (romantic and otherwise) are realistically complex and fluctuate
f) relatable characters and storylines (Ava exploring her newfound freedom recklessly, the girls all struggling with loss and change and Ava’s attempts to fit into that puzzle without replacing Shannon, Bea’s struggle with her sexuality, Camila’s need to prove herself and show her growth, Lilith’s thirst for validation, Mother Superion’s closed off nature because of loss, Mary’s stubborn fearlessness, Jillian’s loss of her son not once but twice, etc.)
g) natural chemistry between actors that shows onscreen
This show has done what so many have found impossible; It has balanced dozens of categories of expectations - that so many shows and movies don’t even attempt - and it has executed them all flawlessly.
I would like to thank the cast and crew for their amazing work. From one filmmaker/actor to many many more: thank you. This isn’t easy, but you did it, and you’re willing to do it again for us.

OOR 2001 - Nr 8 - Rammstein interview
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Rammstein <Germans have a very good sense of humor>
Rammstein: those are boring, surly men, who take themselves too seriously and even are perhaps a little 'wrong'. You would think. But with the release of the third album Mutter, singer Till Lindemann and drummer Christoph Schneider prove that Germans do have a sense of humor. "Only... we don't laugh."
by Robert Heeg
Actually, Rammstein's entire career is a joke. Or at least a bizarre twist of fate. Born and raised in the GDR, Lindemann, Schneider, keyboardist Flake Lorenz, bassist Oliver Riedel and guitarists Paul Landers and Richard Kruspe despite state censorship managed to develop into stubborn punks with their own vision on hard music. Only in '93, long after the fall of the wall, did they convert their ideas into the total concept Rammstein. In addition to hard industrial metal with a gothic touch, this concept also includes a well-oiled show in which sweaty male bodies and stunts with fire play a leading role. Despite international aspirations, the mother tongue was retained. That did not stop the albums Herzeleid ('95) and Sehnsucht ('97) from being very successful. Even in the US, entire tribes sing along at the top of their lungs during the performances. It must be a great victory for the six 'Ossies'. Can you therefore blame Rammstein for using images from the propaganda film Triumph of the Will, by Hitler's court filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl, in a video clip.
How does Mutter differ most from its two predecessors?
Till: "We used more acoustic instruments and recorded a string orchestra 'live' for the first time. We also worked on the mix for a very long time. We even broke off a mix because the album started to sound too much like Sehnsucht. We were looking for a more modern sound"
The official biography says that no one sounds like Rammstein, but I definitely recognize that rigid sound of Die Krupps...
Christoph: "Yes, of course. And there are more bands with which we have something in common. In that bio they are probably referring to the combination of show and German-language singing."
Till: "Especially that German thing, yes. Most acts sing in English, which sounds much rounder than German. So we do offer something new internationally."
The lyrics on Mutter seem less harsh, slightly more personal. Is there a thematic shift?
Till: "You should interpret them the way you want. Use your imagination. I do believe that they are less abstract than before, they have become clearer stories. However, we try to stick to our well-known style."
If you used to express yourself in macho rhetoric such as: 'Wollt ihr das Bett in Flammen sehen', you now cry for Mutter. Back to the womb?
Christoph: "Mutter is simply the word that fits the mood of the record, you don't have to look for any special meaning behind it. Inspiration can really come from anywhere: personal experiences, magazines, a book, a good film... It makes It doesn't matter. It can also happen if you happen to get your finger stuck in the electrical socket. Anything."
Is this a democratic band or are there members who have more influence?
Christoph: "It is quite a democratic whole. And that does not always make it easy when you are in a hurry. Fortunately, there is also a producer [Jacob Hellner] who makes decisions every now and then. It is also a lot more productive that we now sometimes work in smaller teams. If there are six of us, there is always someone who disagrees with something."
Till: "It is good to learn that you occasionally have to defer to the majority opinion. After three or four weeks it often turns out that the consensus was the basis for the right decision. It is essential that you share everything as a band: equal rights, equal duties. It has been my experience that when someone feels underexposed in a band, they usually leave."
Would Rammstein be over then?
Christoph: "It's like cutting off an arm. We would continue, but it would be very different."
In interviews the band members sometimes come across as a bit rigid. You rarely allow yourself to be lured out of your tent.
Christoph: "That depends on how someone responds to us and our texts. Every journalist does that in his own way, and we respond to that. But I know that we are considered difficult. Whether it is photographers, cover designers or people at the record company, they experience us as difficult. That is because we have a very strong opinion about how things should sound and look. We don't compromise well."
This also applies to the language...
Till: "Yes, why should we? Words are free."
And you were also right, in America people sang along with complete lyrics.
Christoph: "Well, at least they tried, haha. In any case, we had a good time with their attempts. They looked like teenagers going to their first pop concert, not having fully understood the lyrics, but still trying to sing along. Very amusing."
You guys have something special with America. Did that start when David Lynch used two of your songs for his film Lost Highway?
Christoph: "That was our first contact with America. It made us a bit known and gave us the opportunity to perform there. However, it was very difficult to make the right contacts and bring Sehnsucht there. We only managed that in '98."
American record companies are traditionally skeptical of European acts. Especially when they stubbornly continue to sing in their native language.
Till: "If you hang around somewhere in the middle, that is certainly true, yes. But once you are successful, you can do just about anything there. The most idiosyncratic acts are often the most successful."
Idiosyncrasy is also often poorly understood. For example, you are often associated with the extreme right. You went one step further by using fragments of Leni Riefenstahl films in the video for the Depeche Mode cover Stripped.
Christoph: "We have never really understood that prejudice. In our opinion, it is not demonstrable. In interviews we have often said that we have nothing to do with it. We are busy discovering our own German music and creating our own German band , and we have mentioned many things that have to do with our culture. We are getting quite tired of the allegations. People simply have an opinion about us, no matter how often we contradict those prejudices through the media. The only thing we can do now all that's left is to just continue making music. If you follow us a bit, you know that we have nothing to do with the right. For the people who still need an explanation, we have included the song Links 234 on the album. Listen to that."
Is your sense of humor and sarcasm underestimated?
Till: "Oh, you either understand us or you don't. There is no in between. You either love us or you hate us. The fans understand our intentions."
Christoph: "The problem is that people are always presented with something that is ready-made. But as soon as they have to interpret something for themselves, think for themselves, they have a problem. You do have your own opinion, right? Then don't ask me what you have to think about it. I can't explain it either."
Don't you secretly cherish those different reactions a little?
Till: "If people think we are really bad, that is of course often annoying and questionable. But it is indeed better than not arousing any reactions at all."
Christoph: "It did surprise us, but it has become part of us."
You also evoke reactions with the show. For the stunt with the dildo, you were even held in an American cell for a couple of hours in '98.
Christoph: "Americans are easily shocked by things that we consider very normal here. But for those involved it was certainly not a pleasant incident, I can assure you. Perhaps Till would like to say something about that."
Till: "We don't do something like this with premeditation. We mainly do a show like that for fun and to illustrate the music. That makes it a bit more pleasant for us on stage, because at least something happens and time goes by faster, haha. And the audience is grateful that there is also something to experience visually. It is not our style to deliberately evoke such extreme reactions. It is not as if we plan it, it just happens naturally."
And yet... Does that rebelliousness have nothing to do with your GDR youth? Is the animal out of the cage now?
Christoph: "That is probably innate, yes. In the GDR, of course, nothing was allowed and the music scene was of little significance. We spent our youth and teenage years in the GDR, so it could not have been otherwise or that it left an indelible impression."
Till: "Yet we weren't really rebellious. We just did what we did, also on stage. We just lived it up, and actually we still do. Only later did we realize that it was quite bold to do that in the GDR."
Were you influenced by show bands like Kiss?
Christoph: "Of course. I wasn't that impressed with the music, but I did have the posters hanging. Musically we were more impressed by Udo Lindenberg, AC/DC, Neubauten, the Neue Deutsche Welle. Very few of them actually came to the GDR. But we didn't know any better. If a band came, it would be talked about for another five years. Those performances were incredibly inflated. haha."
Did you feel like second class citizens?
Till: "That was a big problem, yes, because we were constantly looking to the west. I think the worst thing was that we were not allowed to travel. That was really sad. Other than that, life wasn't that bad, just the traveling... ."
Once an Ossie, always an Ossie?
Till: "Certainly. We still live in East Berlin. Due to our extensive travelling, I don't know whether the term Ossie still has the same meaning for us. But it remains our homeland. You carry it with you in your heart. "
Am I wrong or are you parodying the cliché image that foreigners have of Germans?
Christoph: "You might think. Well, we know how people sometimes think about Germany. Never mind, there is little we can do about that."
Till: "We like to exaggerate and that's part of parody. Only... we don't laugh."
Do you think Dutch people understand German humor?
Christoph: "Germans have a very good sense of humor. But let's talk about you, with your Big Brother-Shit! 1)"

March 2019 and August 2021. Two flavors of the L.A. apocalypse, part of a larger genre that also includes KISS ME DEADLY, REPO MAN, WILD PALMS, MULHOLLAND DRIVE, and SOUTHLAND TALES.
NOW APOCALYPSE, which came and went in 2019, was created by Gregg Araki and cowritten with Karley Sciortino. It follows four sexually frustrated L.A. 20somethings: Ulysses (Avan Jogia), a stock Araki protagonist (mostly gay, perpetually baked, effortlessly hot) who's been suffering disturbing apocalyptic premonitions and weird visions; Carly (Kelli Berglund), his blond, white, mostly straight bestie, a struggling actress and part-time camgirl who I think is supposed to be Sciortino's self-insert; Ford (Beau Mirchoff), Uly's tragically straight aspiring screenwriter beefcake himbo roommate; and Ford's girlfriend Severine (Roxane Mesquida), an autistic French "astro-biological theorist" whose mysterious top-secret government project is probably connected to Uly's frightening visions.
Allegedly inspired by TWIN PEAKS, NOW APOCALYPSE feels more like a redress of Araki's 2010 film KABOOM. The surreal mystery aspects seem to be trying to make a point about the city's predatory appetite for hot, exploitable 20somethings (underscored by the return of Araki regular James Duval as a tormented homeless man), but if you're expecting the show to pay off or even pay much attention to its own mystery, you'll be disappointed. On the other hand, if you're in it for the sexually fluid horniness (which occupies about 85 percent of the plot and most of Araki and Sciortino's apparent interest), the flashes of weird David Icke-style alien conspiracy nonsense are distracting, and Araki seems either oblivious to or unconcerned about the antisemitic roots of conspiracy theories about sinister "Reptilians." As a modern sex comedy, NOW APOCALYPSE is pretty good, although it's familiar territory for Araki (it's really similar to KABOOM and even NOWHERE) and lacks the bite of his '90s work. The part that ends up standing out is the unexpectedly sensitive treatment of Severine; Mesquida manages to make this abrasive woman (whose personality Carly likens to nail polish remover) seem like a real person, who's not without feelings despite her discomfort with emotional expression.
BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR, created by Nick Antosca and Lenore Zion based on a novel I haven't read, wants very much to be the love child of David Lynch and David Cronenberg: a surreal supernatural black comedy, set in the 1990s, about a driven young filmmaker named Lisa Nova (Rosa Salazar) who turns to witchcraft after she loses control of her unsettling short film to a sleazy producer whose contract she hasn't read carefully. A weird Boyle Heights mystic who calls herself Boro (Catherine Keener at her deadpan best) agrees to curse the producer for her, which has unexpected consequences, beginning with the fact that Lisa now vomits up kittens at regular intervals. Meanwhile, the embittered star of Lisa's short film (Siena Werber) resurfaces to reveal the horrifying events surrounding the making of that film, and some extremely weird things are happening at Lisa's new apartment.
BRAND NEW CHERRY FLAVOR is frustrating because it almost works. It's full of interesting pieces (including a memorable if obviously derivative segue into Cronenberg-esque body horror) that don't quite add up and some spooky moments whose tension the story keeps failing to sustain. (While the showrunners have obviously seen MULHOLLAND DRIVE, their attempts to evoke a Lynchian nightmare-logic sense of incipient dread consistently fall flat.) The biggest issue is that the show can't make up its mind what kind of story it's trying to tell (is it a cautionary tale? a parable about the creative process?), which leaves the protagonist a cipher and many of the story threads going nowhere.
This is a common problem with modern media, especially in this generic vein: Deliberate ambiguity and creative indecision are not the same thing, and if a story lacks clear stakes and thematic direction, all the cool, creepy, intriguing bits in the world won't amount to much. Rosa Salazar tries very hard, but she's hampered by the writers' uncertainty about how we should feel about Lisa, and Manny Jacinto is wasted (literally) in a minor supporting role as her former boyfriend. The standout is Catherine Keener, whose flair for droll understatement makes Boro (who's both more and less than she appears to be) a memorable villain.

Really delighted by Bill Hader showing up this morning on Roger Deakins's podcast-- I haven't heard it all yet, but I listen to a lot of Bill Hader podcasts, he appears on every podcast, he doesn't say no to those people for some reason... and he just sounds especially especially excited to be on that podcast. He says it and you can hear it in his voice. Even though he's been on a zillion podcasts, he's like "I made it!"
I listen to that podcast a lot-- it's one of my favorites, but one of the things I like so much about it is the guests break sometimes and you can hear them mentally pull the brakes of, like, "you know, I'm talking about filmmaking, but holy shit you're Roger fucking Deakins, I love you, you make better shit than I do."
But the funny and the best part, the part i really like most, being... Roger Deakins doesn't really have much to say. He's just, like, "You know, we go and try to take good photos. I like photos. I like using a camera to take photos. I like when photos look good." He's a very instinctive artist, moreso than an analytical one. And the real show is Roger Deakins's wife who is (a) lovely, (b) the one in the couple holding down the personality side of the equation (which I find aspirational), and (c) kind of who the guests should be excited to talk to, if they heard the show before.
I just really like that part-- just like... finding out who's deciding what to have for dinner, in Roger Deakins's relationship with his wife?? Podcasts!

ok. i didnt mind genloss, it was ranboos first massive project, theyre only 19 and a streamer, ok. but oh my god would it kill to take an improv class. the first 2 episodes felt like an snl skit. especially when it was branded as original and then was just some sort of frankenstein of different horror tropes from ranboos favourite horror media, that just reminded me of snl stealing joel havers skit lmao.
there were so much issues with it and i feel like i wouldnt mind as much if it was branded as a horror comedy a few months before the show, not 3 days before the show. a few months before and the weeks leading up to may 24th, it was branded as "you arent ready for this. this is groundbreaking, nothing will ever be the same after this show. this is serious." etc and then i think it was like 3 days before may 24th there was that fucking showfall media psa that just felt like ranboo saying "oh btw its a comedy" without warning it caught me so off gaurd lmao.
then he streamed after that sfm psa released and, if i remember right, people were asking about it being a horror comedy in chat and ranboo was like "well yeah obviously did u think id make a project 100% serious? no lol" (dont quote me on that though its been a while) now theyre saying gen 0 and gen 2 are going to be completely horror now, but i dont think thats true bc they also said gen 1 was mostly horror and none of it is
speaking of, the advertising was just lies lol. the whole "little to no filler :D" thing. it wasnt like ranboo didnt expect the improv to last that long bc the expected runtimes (from their tumblr post on may 23rd i think) were sometimes longer than the actual ones. 1st ep was meant to be 1-2 hours, it was 1 and a half, so that much filler and standing around going "what the hell man" was PLANNED. they just lied about no filler to make people excited. just be funny and i wont mind the filler. i like sneegs humour in his streams but here he was just bickering with ranboo. same with ranboo to charlie, charlie was the only one making actual jokes so when ranboo and sneeg were alone it was just "wait so why didnt you just-" "well idk i thought u woul-" "well why would i-" and when i tell you it drained my soul.
ive been a massive ranboo fan for about a year (im recovering dw), and after the game theory episode i got really hyperfixated on genloss (up until the sfm keynote thing i think). i was hyped for it back when T_1 was the only thing released for genloss, and followed it all the way up to the streams. i watched them live and my face was just like 😐 I WAS SO DISSAPPOINTED LMAOOO
the box being 18k pissed me off so much bc an experienced filmmaker/writer/director could make something so much better than genloss with just that 18k. i aspire to make my own live action thing one day, and like, hearing them go "oh yeah the box was 18k and jermas face prosthetics were 10k teehee🤪🤪" was just. AAAAA. and the thing is, like the prosthetics were funny, but spending TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS as a BIT from jerma going "what if i took off the mask and it just doesnt look like me lol" then framing urself as jesus christ and a victim. i am so mad.
idk how to feel about ranboo anymore, i used to watch like every 2nd stream for a while but then the whole "GUYS BUY MY MERCH also racism bad MERCH!!!!! BUY!!!!" thing made me rethink lol. the racist and misogynistic undertones in genloss made me so uncomfy, and while im not poc so i cant speak on that, i have enough sense to know that having the only poc in the entire show play evil rats is so tone deaf.
and niki!! i was worried when the teasers were coming out bc every single person shown in it was a white guy (and a white enby), so i was kind of happier when niki showed up, but then she died within the hour to "commentate on misogyny in media". ranboo thought that he was commentating on misogyny by contributing to it. did they think this through at all. i would have LOVED if they did something special with niki and something powerful, but all that happened was she showed up, cried, then died and now ranboo fans are going "ranboo was so real for this!!!". ik niki had control over her characters writing but im sure ranboo was the one who decided when certain characters died and stuff.
also i hate to say this but the mask flashing to signify if he was in control or not was EXACTLY like a thing in the undertale fanfic (sfw im not weird) i wrote when i was 12 💀💀the characters eyes would flash when they were under control bc edgy. it was so weird watching genloss with that in the back of my mind 💀💀💀💀
in conlusion, genloss had so many flaws and so much easy fixes that it just feels so sososososososo rushed. another year in the oven wouldve been ok i think.
woah this is long im so sorry i do not think only type oops
- the i feel like i should label what kind of anon i am lmao anon
sorry before i get to anything else the undertale bit caught me so off guard omg.
anyways.
it wasnt like ranboo didnt expect the improv to last that long bc the expected runtimes (from their tumblr post on may 23rd i think) were sometimes longer than the actual ones. 1st ep was meant to be 1-2 hours, it was 1 and a half, so that much filler and standing around going "what the hell man" was PLANNED.
this!! the way the second stream just.. dragged was so rough.
the poc/women diversity discussion is something we had on the blog a bit ago as im sure you've seen so i don't have a ton to add but. yeah there were certainly choices that got made there.
very much enjoying all the essays getting dropped in here (even if i feel like my responses are weak sometimes lmao)
