The Outlander 31 Day Challenge: Day 13

Day 13: Favorite scene where the Gaelic language was spoken

This is easily one of my favorite scenes in Outlander from episode 2x11 “Vengeance is Mine.” This is one of the most touching quiet moments shared between Jamie and Claire for me. He knows he might die in this battle ahead, and that he may not be able to protect Claire. He says a prayer in Gaelic to protect her and the child they may one day be blessed with again.

Knowing that soon after this moment he sends Claire and Brianna through the stones to safety and sacrifices himself for his country and cause makes it all the more emotional for me. It’s a beautiful scene.

Part five and final of Jess Reads Fierce Valor as we reached his post WWII military career, his retirement and last years of his life

Notes: Please read the book and take your own conclusions if you can, this is my view and my own clonclusion from my experience reading it

okay now really not much happens, he got married for a second time, stayed in the army, got divorced again

he came to the veterans reunion in 1947 and then never showed up again until some 50 years later

he made his final combat jumps in Korea, he had like 4 which was like a LOT

btw do you guys remember Albert Blithe from the series right? Right! the guy lived after recovering from his wounds and actually served in the 187th Infantry Regiment, guess who was the company commander? thats right! our very own bald man

ok so he worked and had time studied Russian and became the governor os Spandau, at this time there was already some cold war shit going on

speaking of shit, his german was shitty (so is mine!!!) so he couldn't quite undestand the prisioners but played chess with one of them??

Ah yes got married and divorced again

trained and organized some stuff for the the Royal Lao Army and some more army duty??? but nothing interesting is said really

he was then Lieutenant Colonel and worked with the Pentagon, it says that his army duty came to an end in 1964 but his name came up in army records in 1965 at a special division, so he had some function? was he a spy? we will never know for sure

okay now he is retired, married again (the man was a machine), had some health related problems and had to do some heart surgeries, like 5 of them or even more

at this point he was really introspective over his life, then the Ambrose book came and old man was PISSED because guess what??? Ambrose didn't even bothered to actual fact check his book and Speirs felt that he did dirty to his first ex-wife and even to himself

Dick became his biggest advocate and tried so many times to reunited him to the last members of Easy but he couldn't, he even begged Speirs but remember he is a Taurus so he said no again and again

toward his late years and after the release of the book he was afraid some n30-naz1s would come after him for some kind of vengeance so he asked for his name adress and personal info to be removed so Dick was the only one who knew hot to contact him

then there was the reunion for the screening of Band of Brothers and he finally showed up after his last wife made him show up and it was really emotional, Matthew Settle just watched the real Speirs and Dick watching the first ep and then Matthew showed up on his door and asked him to sing his cast, cause he got hurt his feet somehow

oh right forgot to mention that he loved his poodles, he was really into square dance (I don't know what the hell this is don't ask me), had some weird hobbies like pan for gold on rivers??? also normal ones like playing golf and he was also a nice elderly to his grand-sons and great-grand-sons, nephews, nieces and stuff

he had really bad PTSD specially while sleeping ans even after being retired he couldn't relax while sleeping and always eat his food fast.

he wouldn't let people kill spiders, like black widow spiders because of the William Wallace story and because he served in a company that the symbol and nickname was one

also he didn't talked about his army life like AT ALL, he said it was harder for him to remember things since he spent great part of his life om the army while the other guys served like with one company and that was it, for me it's clear it was bullshit he was so hard on himself and self critical on the basic stuff he didn't so one can only imagine how he dealt with the heavy stuff

his final years he was losing his strength, already loss great part of his hearing and was so ashamed of it and was really frustrated and miserable

after his death this one person of his family took his ashes and spread somewhere in a beautiful lake near the Canadian border where he rests today, quite emotional really

Okay so overall this was such a great reading, it's really a testament to how complex, mysterious and sometimes twisted his character really was.

I loved how the authors didn't pushed any agenda or narratives, I feel like they did a good job because they didn't tried to justify any of his actions, they just wanted to bring as many facts to the table as they could so we, as readers, could come up with our own conclusions

Mine is: He was crazy indeed, he did some questionable stuff and it took it's toll on him during and after the war, but also really cared for the man on his side, he sure could be cruel, flawed, cold blooded, impetuous and a true killer, but at the same time protective, respectful, really smart and incredible skilled as a leader, so much that everyone respected him for it, some loved the man dearly, some despised and that it was what truly amazed me by

That whole conversation in the carriage is my favorite part of the episode - it’s two very different, very strong-willed people testing boundaries of each other and trying to understand each other; it’s the first truly meaningful conversation they’ve had and I love that he cannot understand why she is unhappy he used his power to protect her and why she doesn’t views it as hers - because he’s always gone his own way and always been in charge. When he says something like “but husband and wife are one entity so what’s mine is yours” it sounds wonderful and he means it, but NN is not in love the way he is and is very clear-eyed and she knows that in that society, which is already patriarchal and with their huge difference in status, a power that she can only wield as long as he lets her is not really hers. He never had to submit to anyone, frankly not even to the emperor, so he does not know how someone who has to submit feels.

Their positions in the world are so different that it is going to be work for them to come to a genuine, intuitive understanding and I love that drama realizes that. That she is not instantly swept off her feet.

And that is the crux of it - that is why she preferred Yao to the legendary general, adopted son of emperor and capitol dreamboat. Because her heart is not involved in any of it and what she wanted was freedom. And she could have that with Yao and she doesn’t think she could have it with him.

It takes a lot of bravery to talk to him like that but it’s also because she honestly doesn’t care if he breaks it off. But also what I think she should notice (though she doesn’t) is that he lets her express herself; many powerful men would have a fit at not being seen as God’s Gift, but he’s actually listening.

Except then she wants a snack and he does this:

And goes into a long explanation why it’s bad (and hilariously inapposite comments about what they do in the military.) And he’s trying to show care but it’s also NN’s worst expectations - they are not married yet and he’s already trying to dictate something as basic as her meals. The thing is it’s not really that, or at least not fully - he’s just the most awkward human alive when trying to interact (as the rest of this ep shows, but then where would he get people skills between battlefields and trauma and never needing to develop same due to his position) and he’s trying to show care and he’s also 100% used of being in charge - of his soldiers, of his mad mother - so this is his default. It’s clear to the viewer if she shoves back he’d give way but it’s not clear to NN who does not see all we do and also for whom in a lot of ways this is a matter of life and death.

It really is them, however awkwardly, negotiating the parameters of their relationship.

This is kind of hilarious but it’s also an interesting concession - the default in their social positions is really for him to go “because I said so” but he’s open to whatever as long as there is a logical reason. And honestly, that is clearly how his brain operates. Except to NN, justifiably, this is insane - why should she have a logical reason for wanting a snack. It’s a freaking snack, not a battle plan. The thing is, he doesn’t do it because she’s a woman or inferior or w/e, this is what he’d do with himself too. But what he needs to process is this is not how she functions, nor should she, and frankly he is plenty irrational himself - see his vengeance or his falling for her. Not every little thing needs to be reasoned through and planned like a campaign.

The compromise has to be if it’s not crucial let her do whatever she wants and vice versa. But it’s huge that they are testing the waters now and not after marriage or putting on fake faces or w/e.

It’s fun, you don’t need context for the series, and its a full story. Fun for what it is. Con in this is wet and pathetic. It’s 50 minutes, and another one-off thing. Not as fun as Pie in the Sky, still a good time.

Whelp, Rex is imprisoned with the same guy who was threatening his life, and everything else is back to normal.

Overall, not bad. I watched this one with the brother, so my commentary was a bit more sparse this time. We made a ton of ‘Vengeance is Mine’ x ‘This show’ jokes, which was very fun. I swear, he remembers that movie better than I do which was funny. My favorite joke being that guns magically respawn around Con's characters, and he just needs to find a kit. Go out and get rid of Lol.

This is one of the few characters where Con got to be scared as shit without any way to fight back. It’s funny that the whole plot revolves around Rex being kind of a piece of shit, and the cops don’t care. It doesn't really work for me.

Seriously, he rented out broken TVs. Which is scummy, yeah, but not the worst thing, and it’s not like he did it on purpose! You know how many broken LED TVs get returned every holiday season? It’s kinda normal for a ton of them to be shit. I guess he’s also kinda a dick for getting that one guy kicked out of the church choir, but it wasn’t that big of a deal in the grand scheme of things. Idk, I was a bit more sympathetic to Rex than I was supposed to be? But that’s kinda common for these shows with Con being a guest star. Especially when he’s as pathetic as Rex is.

I have no idea what this whole show is about. If the cops are the main focus or not. I liked the poor guy, he was generally fun. Everyone else just felt vaguely off putting. Might just be the dated lingo, this came out in 1997’ so…

CON: 8/10. Really fun. Wet, pathetic, and this is one of his earlier roles, like 1 or 2 years after Pie in the Sky and Soldier Soldier. Cool for him to morally be a wrong and not an actual threat to anybody. His singing was great, and he gave a solid performance. Scared little rat man.

It’s dated, and it feels like it’s from its time. Generally, I don’t like town gossip stories and that is what this is. I wonder how this all ties into the rest of the show, but I have no want to go find out. Not bad though.

(I also used my Con drinking game for this, and was well-hydrated!)

Solid 7-8/10. Great time!

Day 1: Favorite Season 1-3 Episode

There are so many options because the Scotland episodes are my favs. Had to pick S2 ep 11 “Vengeance is Mine”.

It has everything. Murtagh is a stand out with whitty quips (She even spelled Help wrong) and acts of gallantry 🗡. Jamie prays over Claire🥹. Mary gets vengeance. Claire heals and is otherwise a badass (Am I not Lady Broch Turach?). There is just so much action.

Hiii hi. Yes, new Owl House ep dropped and me and a friend of mine made an au. Meet Mapolor, and the local cosmic jester who’s in mirror jail!

Under readmore bc its many thoughts

Mapo’s goals...

Halcandra is not kind to practitioners of magic. If they find one, theyre immediately banished. Mapo here has been interested in magic for a long time, and practiced it in secret until he was found out. He was witch hunted from young age. All hes known is how to run.

He wants to belong so bad.

But he cant find any safe space…

See, even the most “innocent” Halcandran has something against magic users. Stereotypes, all that. I think theyre afraid of forces they cant understand; choosing to rely on tech instead.

I wonder, are there other magic users…?

Maybe Mapo found himself with them. Finally found a place he can belong to… until the “coven” was found and he its sole survivor. (Again with him being the last survivor of something…)

Seeing his found family get banished…made him vengeful.

If he cannot find a safe space for himself and others like him. He is going to make it himself.

Thus enters the thought of “cleansing” Halcandra. Cleanse it of its technological blight, restore magic to its rightful place.

He finds a certain mirror around this time…heard it whispering, heard it promise him everything he desired.

With the power of the being in the mirror, he manages to make Halcandra destroy itself. Probably made the Halcandrans build machine that wiped their entire race from existence, save for Mapo. After the way it treated him…this is what he thought was the best way to deal with his anger. He has gotten the vengeance he sought, and he does not regret it.

But he wanted to do more. Hes aware of the reaches of Halcandra’s influence.

He decides to become the galaxy’s savior, cleansing it of the tech-Halcandran’s influence (a COMPLETE reversal of what regular Mags does!). He renames himself Mapolor; “Hope of Paradise”.

As he does this, he found communities on every planet he “cleanses”.

“A community, to keep magic-users safe. Give them sanctuary.

Under my watchful eye… I will make sure that the planet they inhabit is never corrupted by technology again.”

He sees tech as a blight; how dare a single mortal or society mess with the will of the universe/nature like so?

Those communities are connected to him. Hes keeping watch over them. Protecting them in his own twisted way.

He truly believes hes doing good…what hes doing instead is preventing societies from ever advancing.

Hes very powerful magic-wise. He can defend himself from any magic attack. Tech could take him down. But by keeping most of the galaxy away from it…well. Hes unbeatable.

Basically hes done a Susie and is colonizing planets “for their own good”, and “bring them closer to the forces that be, their natural state”

From what Ive described, it seems that Mapo has suppressed a lot of his desire for friends. He has no intent on freeing Marx, who’s very lonely in his mirror jail and just wants to play….

Bc he believes he already found the friends he needed.

He thinks the leaders of those communities he keeps in touch with are his friends. The truth is, many of them want him dead.

“He promised paradise. He only brought us hell. Mapolor? More like Mafolor!!”

Does he actually care for them? Only a select few. The others are just tools. Pawns for his conquest.

By the way, he never finds the Lor here. He doesnt care to. He has Landia instead :) the Halcandrans were not kind to the big scary dragon with the powerful magical artifact (WHO WAS PROTECTING THEM). They were building a tech replacement. It pissed Landia off so much that she decided to join Mapolor’s conquest out of her own volition.

Tldr EVIL EVIL WIZARD WITH A DRAGON STEED AND A COSMIC JESTER IN MIRROR JAIL. HALCANDRA DONE FUCKED UP WITH HOW IT TREATED HIM AND THE ENTIRE GALAXY IS IN JEOPARDY.

I want to talk about the tessen in how it relates to April's relationship to the Hamato clan, specifically Splinter and Karai

April's dad was kidnapped in episode 1 and after that, she lives with her aunt but spends practically all of her time with the turtles. (i am also a firm "seasons 1-4 all happened in a little over a year" believer)

so sometime in the late summer/early fall, she gets to know the family and starts training with Splinter, and a couple months later we get S1 ep 19 Baxters Gambit (while the turtles are dealing with fishface, dogpound, and stockman, Splinter helps April find a weapon)

during this training session, they talk about Splinters previous life, family

"Miwa would've been about your age now. i would like to think she would've turned out as well as you have, child"

This is the point where it becomes more clear that Splinter sees April as both a student and a sort of daughter-figure, how she reminds him of what Miwa could've been, and how he will do anything to make sure that his family isn't destroyed again.

it's then that he gives her the tessen, something he had planned to give to Miwa, and a symbol of the Hamato family (literally... it has the clan symbol on it) Splinter accepts her as a part of the family.

It's only two episodes later when April meets Karai. The two eat together at Murakami"s, Karai attempts to get information from her about the turtles, without revealing that she's foot. (Karai also uses the fake name Harmony, which is also the meaning for Miwa)

once April realizes that its Karai, they quickly get into a fight. When April Attacks Karai says

"A tessen, beautiful, unassuming, but very powerful, in the right hands."

an obvious jab at April, Karai doesn't think that April is properly trained, or can use the weapon. however, once you know that it was originally meant for Karai, the line reads slightly differently. Karai then easily disarms her, but April is able to escape after mentioning loosing her mother, distracting Karai.

It's at the end of season one when Splinter learns that Karai is his lost daughter and almost a whole season later that Karai is able to fully join her family in the sewers (s2ep21 Vengeance is Mine) sewers,,,,,, however, it is the very same episode that she is mutated into a snake monster.

If I were to rewrite the series I would expand this episode into at least three. Where Karai would get a chance to get to know her brothers and become comfortable in this family unit, so it means more when she gets mutated.

but going back to my original point, the tessen isn't discussed much after this, its April's main weapon (along with a couple others she picks up along the way) but it no longer carries the narrative symbolism that it did in the first season.

over the course of these additional episodes, I would use the tessen as a way to explore the relationship between April and Karai. Maybe starting with Karai walking in on April training by herself and commenting on the tessen again. Having the two train together and addressing the awkwardness between them. Later on, they would face an enemy and learn to work together, and the episode would end with April offering Karai the tessen and Karai refusing (probably also some Splinter giving them both advice sprinkled in there)

but that's just one idea, my overall point is that the dynamics between Splinter, April, and Karai should've been expanded on using the tessen, and there are a lot of ways that could've been done.

Yeah, Mitsuko's definitely mad af at Zwijo looking at the preview line on the left. And she honestly has a good reason for it. Sure, Zwijo had no control over Mitsuko developing romantic feelings for him but he still shouldn't have just ditched her with a "goodbye". Why did he even spend 2 1/2 arcs with her when she doesn't matter to him at all? I don't see Mitsuko being just a "tool" for Zwijo like Chupataro was.

I really hope he has a good reason why he left Mitsuko without telling her why and avoiding her so long. Ngl, it would break my heart if he really just used her and saw no reason to still have her in his life. Even if Zwijo might not reciprocate Mitsuko's feelings in the end, she should still matter to him as a close friend. And you don't just ditch friends.

Btw: I had a friend noticing that the pronoun for "mine" in the ep 72 title is the same as the one Zwijo uses which would sound like he is the one who is about vengeance. (and that's a little strange because he has no reason wanting vengeance when dueling Mitsuko unless it's towards the Creator who might possess Mitsuko with "darkness"?) But my friend also pointed out that "vengeance is mine" is a verse from the bible. Idk if just coincidence or on purpose tho.

“You know this all could’ve been avoided if shredder kept Karai in a cage away from the mutagen. The turtles were gonna rescue her either way and you would’ve been able to trap em either way. If you didn’t want Karai to get mutated, WHY WOULD YOU HANG HER OVER MUTAGEN?”

Honestly, the whole way shredder went about trying to turn the turtles into snakes was dumb.

Why not have stockman make little robo oozequitos to target the turtles?

Why not have stockman make a mutagen gas bomb?

Why not make that Karai bot from the kuro kabuto ep a mutagen bomb instead of a regular bomb?

Shredders an interesting villain but he certainly ain’t a smart one.
