Diel
I am definitely not capable of writing a fic every day in the month of December, but today I came across @creativepromptsforwriting's December Prompt List and was immediately struck with an idea, so I picked a handful of prompts for the month of December and am going to try to put out some fics inspired by them!
Diel (adj): of or relating to a 24-hour period, especially a regular daily cycle, as of the physiology or behavior of an organism.
December 1: Starry Night (Taurik x Fem!Reader)
Warnings: none; not beta'd we die like men. | Words: ~870
Tumblr media
One of the things you missed the most about Earth was night. On the Enterprise, drifting through space for long stretches of time, there was no day or night. Only the inky vacuum between pinpricks of distant stars.
You weren’t really one for being homesick. Your exploratory nature made every new discovery, every new command to explore some previously unknown area of space, a reason for excitement. Nebulas, anomalies, first contacts – they all made your heart race in a way that stopped you from dwelling on what you might be missing out on back home.
But sometimes, when all was quiet and you were between missions, or there was some occasion that needed remembering (birthdays, holidays, anniversaries), it tugged at your heart that there was no sunrise to greet you. That you couldn’t really remember what dusk was like. That the Terran moon was lightyears away.
You’d mentioned it once, to Taurik, who merely reminded you that it was illogical to dwell on what was missing and to instead focus your attentions on the present circumstances. And you’d sighed and rolled your eyes, affectionately damning his Vulcan logic, before moving on to other topics.
You supposed he was right after all, but you were Human, not Vulcan, and you couldn’t really help the occasional bouts of nostalgia that filled your mind with memories of camping beneath starry night skies, or watching shooting stars fall over the horizon, or mapping constellations on your very first telescope.
---
Your days had been busy recently, and you didn’t notice how Taurik watched you, far more observant than he’d allowed you to think when you first spoke to him about missing “night”. Taurik had always valued your resilience and, although he didn’t particularly understand your current plight, it was apparent to him that your discomfort was lingering more than was customary for you. And so he did as any dutiful mate would, and sought a solution to your distress.
“I think it should be just about ready,” Geordi announced, handing Taurik the isolinear chip as he rushed around the central console in engineering. “You might need to tweak a few of the parameters for the environmental controls, but other than that, you’re all set.”
“Thank you for your assistance, Commander LaForge,” Taurik replied, standing at attention. He’d given his commanding officer little information when he’d first approached him about creating a holodeck program to a very specific set of criteria.
“Happy to help, Taurik.” Geordi glanced up at the Ensign from where he’d busied himself making long-overdue adjustments to the EPS. “I think she’ll love it.”
With that, he strode toward the warp core, leaving Taurik standing alone in Engineering with an eyebrow raised in surprise. It seemed that his commander was more perceptive than he’d previously given him credit for.
 ---
You smoothed your sweater nervously as you arrived outside the doors to Holodeck 3. You weren’t sure what you were walking into; you only knew that Taurik had requested your presence via combadge for an outing he’d called a “courtship event”. Supposing that meant “date”, you’d changed out of your uniform once your shift had ended and made your way to the holodeck, wondering all the while what Taurik could possibly have planned.
You pressed the control to open the doors and as they slid quietly open, your jaw dropped.
Taurik, dressed down in casual pants and a soft-looking shirt, stood before you in front of a sky bursting with color – deep oranges blazed across a backdrop of dark blue that plunged into black night overhead. His stoic expression gave way to the barest hint of a smile as he observed your response to the holodeck program.
He held a hand out toward you as you stepped into the holodeck, still speechless. The prickle of tears pressed behind your eyes.
“I was hoping,” Taurik offered quietly as you slipped your hand into his, “that you might enjoy experiencing a Terran night with me.” He guided you carefully through the tall grass that covered the hillside he’d chosen. A lone tree, its limbs heavy with green, presided over the hillside, stretching its branches toward the darkening sky, and Taurik led you to a blanket laid out at its base.
Lying on your back on the blanket, you could just make out the sparkle of the emerging stars between tree branches. It was strikingly similar to a childhood memory of yours – you gasped as realization dawned on you, before staring slack-jawed at Taurik, who was settling himself beside you.
“You saw it?” you asked softly.
Taurik nodded as he reclined, his arm pressed against yours in his closeness. He turned to look at you.
“I have seen this memory many times in your mind, ashayam,” he murmured. “It would seem to be very important to you… When you expressed that you missed experiencing the Terran cycles of day and night, I was able to perceive the depth of your longing. And as your mate, it is my duty to protect your well-being.”
At your side, you felt Taurik’s fingers brush against yours, and you returned the gentle caress, the ozh’esta sparking a warmth that flooded your limbs. Overhead, the sky settled into a gentle black, flecked with the stars you now called home.

Ok, here's how I'd do the Under the Cloak of War arc if SNW got DS9 amounts of screentime:
(Spoilers. Also, horrendous formatting.)
TLDR: For once I want more time for the ethics dilemma and less time for the Andorian with a knife. I know. I don't know what's wrong with me either.
Part 1: Bob, calling Chris about where the fuck is his Klingon. Chris ends the call, drinks, Una takes his glass away because she's had it with his bullshit, he needs to stop stalling. We interrogate our suspects and get different versions of the preceding events. The episode ends on "well, he's likely dead and likely one of the crew killed him, oh no, the ethical dilemma of revenge and self-control". Chris gets to want to believe the best in people, Una gets to point out that nonetheless they're still short a Klingon, and everybody sure wishes that they had killed him. End with a close-up of the transporter buffer with the ambassador in it.
Ep 2:
The action one. The ambassador tells his version of J'gal, Joseph calls him out. We get Joseph and Christine's and Erica's versions, but also Chris' and Una's. They swooped in just when everything was already decided, yet they're the golden kids. So if we're doing history parallels they can be (imperfect) USA stand ins. Everyone's telling a single part of the bigger story of J'gal. The ensign and spec ops commander should be rolled into one and replaced with Erica, and she should be the one to hand over the knife. She gets saved, but many others don't, and she finds joy in flying, or she flew out the ship that evacuated a bunch of people, or *something* to make "I'm Erica Ortegas, I fly the ship" have some emotional punch. Can the Klingons be forgiven? The Federation? The individuals? Joseph and Chris should have their heart to heart here.
Ep 3: Joseph and the ambassador do their song and dance. The kids get to share their perspective on how the war affected them too, and their overcoming prejudices and peaceful future stuff. Pelia gets to add the immortal perspective, giving her some development, because I need her to be a highly decorated hero who keeps getting sent to wars she wants no part in, but she's just so damn GOOD, so she's going anyway because more people will die if she doesn't fight. Hemmer is there too, dammit, and he gets to have a go at both the ambassador and Nyota because ~uwu Aenar existentialism~ isn't a gimmick, it's hard work committing to pacifism and finding a solution for when violence seems inevitable. The stabbing happens, but in a Clue kind of way where somehow, everyone just happens to be a plausible suspect. Joseph puts the ambassador in the transporter buffer and after much In the Pale Moonlight style deliberation he FINALLY lets Hemmer purge the damn thing. Hemmer & Pelia know what's up and send the whole buffer to Starfleet HQ with a little bow on top. Una congratulates Chris on solving the crisis with Bob. Chris remains clueless. Or maybe he says something about trusting individuals and trusting the crew he got together, because he really needs some competence points in my book.

stark trek ep where an ensign discovers a load of signals cycling in an array of transporter pattern buffers - she and her commander strive to materialise them all and it's a bunch of drowsy knights and a very cross king arthur who's like "whatt tyme d'ye call thys?! i'faith we were due in ye year 2020"

ohhhh it's tng update time. i have a lot to catch up on. wednesday we did "ensign ro" and "silicon avatar" and last night we did "disaster" and "the game."
a brief interruption to amend an error on my previous tng liveblog concerning the episode "redemption." i did NOT mention the part where data got his own command and the first officer was racist to him about it. my brain was so numbed by klingon happenings - and again, they're fine episodes, it was MYYY fault for watching both of those episodes at once AND the second one with a bad connection (we had to reconnect like 1000000 times), but due to this i did straight up forget about data's role here. my thoughts are: this could and should have been the a plot of an entire episode, not the b plot of worf's episode. this late in the game, you kind of run the risk of data's big episodes becoming too same-y - that usually what happens is that someone is misguided or prejudiced in their beliefs about him and are in the end proven wrong - but i think the first command is different enough to be distinct. data building genuine trust with his actions and not his words would have been really fun!! especially if he models his captaining like he does his art - by picking bits and pieces of his real-life examples, like riker & picard. it's a shame they wasted this on a b-plot :(
ANYWAY.
ensign ro: i have to admit i wasnt sure about my girl ro at first. i absolutely support her cause and her beliefs but there was one part where. and i dont remember specifics because this was on wednesday. they like asked her to do something and she didn't and i support her but GIRL if you fuck around and dont do your job they will send you back to space jail. so i was worried that she was stupid in like the literal sense
fortunately she fucking RULES. i liked the part where bev and deanna were like can we sit down :D and she was like no <3 and they had to leave. but i also liked guinan getting through to her and becoming her friend too. i think ro should kiss some women about it (more on this later)
i was kind of bummed riker wasnt the one to let her put her earring back on since he was the dick who made her take it off, but at least she did get to put it back on. i was soooo mad when he made her remove it
LOVE to find out more about the cardassians. i'm excited for that freaky guy and the dr he wants to fuck in ds9, this feels like a real prelude moment
also, love the barber in this episode. in a world where they no longer have to even cook food, haircutting is miraculously still done by hand
silicon avatar: i had a lot of mixed feelings about/issues with this one initially but the ending ultimately took it into watchable territory on account of it popping the fuck off
biggest issue is that they basically retconned the hell out of the first episode this crystal monster was in (the iconic datalore aka "ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THE KIND OF DEATH YOU'VE EARNED LITTLE MAN")
in that ep lore was DEFINITELY able to communicate with it without all the drama and he also communicated enough with it to be like "hey, if you don't eat me, i can show you where lots of edible people are" which solves the question of it's intelligent and whether or not it understands it's eating people. the fact that were uwu woobifying this giant people eating death machine is hilarious but also it stretches my suspension of disbelief way too far. like, get outta here.
second biggest issue was the emotional whiplash from this old lady. first she's racist to data and then she wants to butter him up for therapy reasons and finally she's delusional enough to believe her dead son is in there. i actually did like her arc and the idea that she did something monstrous, but it felt like we had too many things crammed in there...again, i love data and i love when data gets big episodes and moments but i wish we could pump the brakes a little with EVERYONE who meets him being anti android or whatever. even the episode where he gets a gf was a welcome change despite it not being very good because it wasn't just more people having doubts because data is an android. and if I'M tired of it, imagine how HE feels. geez. there was no point in having her start from a place of hostility when it didn't go anywhere and actually i probably would have been more tricked into believing she was normal if she HADN'T come at data like that
THAT SAID, the core story of "i will murder this sentient life form because it killed my son even knowing he would hate me for it" is actually metal as fuck. i really liked it. and i think it was sneaky and clever to have her basically ask to use data as a tape recorder before she fully fell off the deep end because who wouldn't want to hear a recording of a deceased loved one? but it's when she asks again, and basically asks data to roleplay him, that you realize her grief is making her bonkers - or that being around data is bringing too much stuff up.
anyway issues aside the end really fucked. she was like data absolve me of the murder i just committed in my dead son's name and he was like sorry queen i can't! and then they just rolled credits. bonkers.
also, can we pour one out for riker? he got uh. i mean he had all of that going on with beverly like just a handful of episodes ago and i was SOOO hoping he was gonna get laid but instead he got. trauma :(
disaster: i LOVED this one. i loved that it paired characters we don't normally see together - like geordi and beverly for instance - and i loved that quite literally everyone got to get up to batshit insane shenanigans at the same time. picard has to learn to interact with the world's most adorable children. deanna is captain of the starship and she should kiss ro about it. geordi and beverly are gonna open the cargo bay to space some radioactive barrels and while they're holding onto a metal ladder with their BARE HANDS. riker is carrying DATA'S DETACHED HEAD around the crawlspaces and meanwhile in ten forward worf is delivering a fucking baby
side bar which uh exit do we think klingon babies come out of. like if they've got two of everything does the baby just pick one or do they have two whole wombs too...do you think klingons are like "oh most of us come out of the right side but watch out for that guy he's fucked in the head i think he came out of his mom's left vagina" i think that'd be hilarious
anyway worf did a great job.
also pleased with the kids this ep...normally star trek kids aren't uh. great. like they're annoying or weird or just not great actors because, you know, kids. but all 3 of those kids had distinct personalities and they were all extremely charming. absolutely masterful casting. they were so fucking cute
idk why but when deanna became enterprise captain she immediately looked 10x hotter and gayer. her disagreements with ro were FRAUGHT with sexual tension. THEY SHOULD KISS.
that said my one true pairing for tng is always gonna be riker e worf e deanna. hands down best moment for these three so far was when riker was like you just cant stay away from the big chair can you ;) and she was like oh im not cut out to be a captain but maybe i could be first officer since i HEAR there aren't many qualifications and worf gives riker this incredulous double-take like "are you gonna let her get away with that" and he's grinning like oh yeah he's Gonna. there truly is such a horrific lack of sexual/romantic energy in this show but whenever deanna and riker start flirting we finally get fed
the game: MY BABY BOY WESLEY IS BACK..........he got tall i MISSED HIM
i loved the opening of this episode. riker seems to have a 50/50 chance these days on whether or not any given encounter with a woman is gonna be an ethical slut moment or a close encounters moment and i am now referring to this phenomenon as riker roulette. is he getting ethically seduced and/or ethically seducing others? or is it....................you know. anyway rip to him for metaphorically bringing an std back to the enterprise from risa
what was this whole thing with deanna eating chocolate also. is all of season 5 gonna be like this? to be clear i'm not complaining. we have a fucking dearth of, sorry, flirty fun and fresh shippy moments for anyone in tng, generally speaking. it's about time they picked up.
my one gripe with this episode is that it is REALLY AWKWARD to have them set this up as "this VR headset is giving people orgasms" and then twice have wesley's mom try and force one on him. like they didn't say orgasms but the subtitles kept going "pleasured gasp" so idk what i was supposed to think those headsets were doing. like i get this was probably unintentional on their part but i still hated it
also it sucks that wesley got to have a little tea break with picard but didn't have time to hang out with his mom...she was barely in his departure episode, too. the writers clearly prioritize his relationship with picard BECAUSE WESLEY IS THEIR AFFAIR BABY! i will die on this hill. those guys fucked and had a baby and got embarrassed abuot it and now wesley doesn't know he's going to inherit male pattern baldness
okay. that concludes this tng update. normally this is the part where i say, "next, we are doing..." and then i list the episodes. i want to take an extra moment to bring added attention to it this time because this time we are doing two VERY. SPECIAL. EPISODES.
NEXT: UNIFICATION PART I AND PART II
NEXT: SPOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Random thoughts on SNW Season 2
Broken Circle
Not a great season premiere. However, I did like the premise of a rogue Klingon/Federation organization trying to Ignite the war again for profit. I also liked that this was Spock's first command. Him stealing the Enterprise was bold, I liked it!
Note--this is the introduction of M'Benga's super drug. I thought the "Performance drug" angle was interesting. I suspected he was using it at the detriment of his health. I feel that would have been a very interesting and timely story. So, I'm disappointed they never went there.
Ad Astra per Aspera
This was my favorite. I LOVE courtroom episode, and this was right up there with my favorite all-time TNG ep "Measure of a Man." This is one of those allegory episodes that Trek does so well! At the time I thought it would've been nice if Pike was the one defending Una since we've seen captains do that. However, given the seriousness of the it does make sense she'd have an actual civil defense attorney.
Plus, it was great seeing Batel as prosecutor! You could see how conflicted she was. She was trying to do her job, a job that in this case she didn't really agree with.
Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorow
Time travel episode! I enjoyed this one. I liked that they had the action in Toronto, rather than New York City. That was an interesting change of pace. I loved seeing Kirk too even if it was an alternate universe one. This was a great showcase for La'an. I loved how she dropped her guard around Kirk.
I wasn't completely keen on the "let's push Khan out thirty years. However, I have to admit, it does help the timeline of the WWIII make more sense.
Among the Lotus Eaters
I keep seeing this last among various rankings. I like this one a lot. I'd put it in my top five. I liked the idea of revisiting Rigel VII. I loved the premise of "radiation causes the society to lose their memories" And I really liked the "Starfleet officer, one who used to be a friend, becomes evil" trope with Zach. That's one of my favorite tropes.
I loved that scene where it looked like Pike was going to kill Zach. It just showed how much he almost lost himself without his memory. (Now that I think of it, that moment was a lot like Voy's "The Chute")
And Erica saving the day was awesome!
Charades
This is my least favorite for the year. I really liked "Faces" so you'd think I'd this but no. Maybe because this seemed to be played too much for laughs. The most cringe-worthy part was just the idea that they were going to play charades. Thank GOD that did not happen!!
That said, I did like Christine entreating the aliens (who were amusing) to help because even though all human Spock is easier to relate to, he's just not Spock. I loved seeing T'Pring's parents her father is like the most open-minded Vulcan ever which I love.
Lost in Translation
Uhura saves the day episode! I enjoyed this one. I didn't love it, but I liked it. I liked Sam and Kirk's discussion at the bar. I was good character development for Sam--he hates being overshadowed by his kid brother. I loved that Kirk, a lieutenant commander, treated Uhura, an ensign, like an equal and not a junior officer. That earned him a lot of respect from me.
Pelia and Una were also great. Oh, and the handshake between Kirk and Spock--awesome!!
Those Old Scientists
The crossover episode! This was really fun. I loved that we saw all four lower deckers at the beginning. I love all the fanboying and fangirling. I really loved that Pike, normally unflappable is totally at a loss with Boimler here. All through the episode he's facial expressions are "I can't handle this."
Oh, and my theory was right. Una IS on a recruitment poster for Starfleet! "Hottest first officer in Starfleet history" -- loved that line by Ransom!
Cloak of War
This one i REALLY liked! It was heavy but it was one of those stories that are important to tell. PTSD is such a huge issue among soldiers, and I applaud SNW for tackling it is. You could see Joseph's pain in this one. You see him at that dinner party trying to hold it together while Ra keeps talking about peace and healing. I completely understand Joseph snapping at the end especially when Rah just won't leave him alone.
We got a little more backstory with Ortegas--she saw combat in the war. So, this, "Among the Lotus Eaters" and possibly the finale were the Ortegas development we were promised? It's a start, I guess. But I really think she deserves an entire episode.
Subspace Rhapsody
The musical! The one that I dreaded but ended up loving! I loved that there was a reason for the singing and the characters were aware that they were doing it. To me, that helped ground it in reality. (kind of weird that the effect went all the way to Starbase 1)
I loved the character bits we got here too. Christine's happiness at getting the fellowship, Uhura saving the day, La'an opening up to Kirk, Spock decided to embrace his Vulcan side, the Pike/Batel stuff.
Hegemony
My next to least favorite, but not for the reasons others have. I didn't have issue with the tone of the episode or anything that Pike did. It just felt lackluster to me.
I like the idea of the Gorn as the big bad, but they have to be careful they don't run into "The Arena" which it seems like they're close to doing.
I found the idea of a colony based on 21st century small town model to be really interesting. We've seen colonies like the one in 'Up the Long Ladder" that went without technology, so I thought one founded on 21st century interesting.
I loved seeing Batel. I was certain she was a goner so it's great that I was wrong (at least for now). I loved, loved, loved seeing Scotty! I was taken aback by how young he looked but he's still great!
Pike's stare at the end. I don't think it was supposed to play the way it did. I feel like it was the director's choice to make it into a big dramatic moment leading into the cliffhanger and it failed.
Overall, an enjoyable season but I think Season 1 was much better.

Ok, so Star Trek Discovery Season 2 episode 1 :
-general impression : I don’t know, maybe the show still needs to fonds it’s own pace. Some things are well done, some things just feel plain gratuitous, or non convincing
-it’s called brother, which I guess is a ref to Spock. It was bound to happen, since the show went on a « the only family on Vulcan that people know is Spock, let’s just use it ». So, very logical, as I believe I might have mentioned before, it was weird that didn’t really mention him in season 1, but it still feels like a cheap way of getting the viewer’s engagement.
-Very nice intro 😉 loved the « space. The final frontier » bit, the theme song is as good as ever. Love the costumes and decors and special effects 🤩 that scene where we finally meet the Enterprise have me chills 🤩
-now, in this ep we meet our new captain, captain Pike. Glad that they decided to expand on his character, actually. The man seems to actually care about his crew, which is a nice break from Lorca. Hoping this doesn’t turn into a dichotomy or manichean thing, however, on their command strategy, since we are seeing many differences between their styles. I guess the bit about a cage at the end was fan service? With any luck we won’t see too much foreshadowing of his future fate, and tough I thought it a nice little Easter egg. The part with the Enterprise « too far away to come back for the war » though… ugh 😑 And what the heck was that with the tour of introductions ? 😅😂 at least we know their names, now, which is better than nothing
-Saru being relegated to XO, well, he does have a lot of growing to do still, both as a character and as a commander. Not too much to say about him this episode, though, which means we’ll get more later
-Michael is still interesting, she does act like the future captain she’s bound to become, not a huge dev except for the part with Spock which I hope will be interesting and well developed. I do love her friendship with Tilly though ♥️
-Tilly, still adorable, happy she’s pursuing her dreams, and we see more of that relationship between her and Stamets (siblings?), love it anyway. Good dev on that part, how she tries to help him in little ways, and he seems to need to talk to her about Hugh. And that « this is the magic of maths! » 😂 I stan an adorkable ensign ! Loved that high five ✋ !
-Stamets, my beloved bean 😭♥️ the way he has to talk about Hugh (and to Tilly because Science Fam), I mean I knew he was going to break my heart 😭 I want Hugh back 😭 and I am asking once again : is there no therapist on that ship?!
-and now let’s start nitpicking because I’m a bitch :
-what the hell is it with Vulcan no longer being a desert planet ?
-what is this house? It looks like generic rich human minimalist house n. 12
-what is it with Sarek and Amanda’s relationship that feels completely off
-angel imagery. in space.
-they haven’t Harry Kim-ed Culber
-was it absolutely necessary to introduce a new science officer just to have him killed 10 minutes later during a completely unnecessary (though very cool) pod race ? And what was the point of that pod race?
-where is nr 1? 😭
Impatient for episode 2, though, intrigued to « discover » more, especially about Spock (hope they haven’t hurt him irreparably) and see more of Stamets (who is my official fav character, obviously) and Pike, because we had so little of him until now (yeah, I know Strange New Worlds is out, it that’s for after the fourth season of ST: DISC). Maybe we’ll also get to meet Nr 1 🤩. Wait and See is my verdict : they’re proposing different plot threads seeming to wipe completely the secondary characters we met in S1. Or I might just be too impatient 😅

Hi! Big fan of your fics. I have a suggestion for one: the basic idea is that the Lower Decks characters (mainly the Warp Core Four) get involved with the ep. "Trials and Tribble-ations" Meet both DS9 and TOS crew in a subtle/not-so-subtle way (PARADOX!). Bonus: They are drawn and animated in TAS Filmation style, with some of them slightly aware. Maybe a bit of Mariner x Boimler? Hope you have fun with the idea.
Time Tribbles
The Warp Core Four decides to go back in time to the Enterprise to do some not-so-scientific research on Tribbles. They come across not one, but two famous Starfleet Crews
Tendi dragged herself to her bunk. She was absolutely exhausted from pulling double shifts in Medbay to make up for the influx of patients. Earlier today, some of the food replicators were producing food at extreme temperatures. They were also uncontrollably spewing food out, and in the case of ten forward, literally spraying boiling nacho cheese. Crew members had been in and out all day with burns. Just as she sat on her bed, she saw Mariner down the hallway. Both of them waved to each other.
"Yo, Tendi, what's up?" Mariner said as she walked up to her.
"Nothing much; I’m just exhausted from all the activity in Medbay. I did see somebody with a nacho cheese burn in the shape of an Orion continent!" She smiled.
"I have something that will cheer you up!" Mariner held up her finger and ran off, going to get her special piece of contraband.
After a few minutes, she returned with a Tribble in hand. It had brown fur and little white patches. She handed the Tribble to Tendi and sat down next to her. The cooing of the ball of fur filled the room.
"Personally, I would prefer getting drunk, but I thought this might be more up your alley" Beckett smiled as Tendi ran her hand through the fur, her eyes lit up.
"This is the cutest thing ever," Tendi squealed. She then spoke in baby talk to the Tribble, "Yes you are, you are the cutest little Tribble on this ship.”
She continued to pet the Tribble for a couple of minutes before finally speaking, "You know, I've always wanted to see a Tribble reproduce. I know that the ones they sell at the pet stores are neutered."
Beckett thought for a second before finally speaking. "Ok, so I got this really cool piece of contraband from the planet we did second contact with a couple of weeks back. I've been testing it, and I think it opens up portals to different times. We could go back in time to see Tribbles reproduce."
"But isn't that against the rules?”
"Yes, but it's for science, so it's probably ok. Come on, let get Rutherford and Boimler."
A few hours later, the four Ensigns were in an empty part of the docking bay. All of them were wearing 2260s uniforms. Tendi messed with her holographic disguise, trying to find the right hairstyle. She felt odd with blonde hair and peachy skin, but there was no way she could go back in time looking like an Orion. Enterprise crew members would ask too many questions.
"Bangs or no Bangs?" She adjusted her holographic remote, letting it flip through different hairstyles.
"Definitely the Bangs," Rutherford gave a thumbs up before continuing his excitement-filled lecture about Constitution-class ships. “Did you know that turbolifts were not completely voice-controlled back then? You had to hold down a bar for them to work.”
"Mariner, are you sure we should be doing this. Time travel is against 253.7-" Boimler began before being cut off Mariner.
"Rules, Schmules. Come on, Boims, this could be your one chance to see Kirk in flesh and blood."
"Fine, but I'm keeping you in check," he spoke.
Beckett then pulled out the small blue stone from her trouser pocket. It glowed softly in her hand. She set it down and stated where she wanted to go "Stardate 4523.3, USS Enterprise 1701."
The store glowed brighter until it flashed, opening up a small portal to the other ship. Its corridors were empty, meaning the Ensigns could slip in undetected.
"Ready to do science stuff?" Mariner asked Tendi.
She bounced in excitement, nodding rapidly. Mariner was the first to step into the portal. She felt slight tingles all over her body as she popped out on the other side. The Enterprise looked much different than the ships of her time. The lights had colored tints, and more equipment was exposed. Rutherford came out of the portal next, slightly dizzy but extremely excited to see such an old ship. Tendi and Boimler followed. Once through the portal, it returned to its original gem form.
Boimler slowly stood up, trying to shake off how dizzy he felt. "I feel so stiff and kinda cheap too,"
"You look different," Rutherford pointed out
"Oh god! Am I phasy again?!?"
"No, but your eyes look smaller," Tendi looked at all of them. "We all look kinda different."
"Probably some stupid time travel stuff, come on, let's got find some Tribbles!" Mariner shoved the gem in her pocket and started down the hallway, followed by the other four.
Soon, they came to the main corridor that was bustling with people. The women styled their hair in extravagant bumps and wore earrings. Most wore minidresses, a popular style in the 2260s, but a couple wore the tunic style uniform, just as Mariner was. The sound of boots tapping filled the hallway, and the gold rank bands on the officer sleeve sparkled among the sea of yellow, red, and blue. Perhaps the most striking thing, however, was the lack of aliens. The vast majority of the officers were human, a stark contrast from how diverse the Cerritos was.
Suddenly, Mariner stopped and motioned to the other three to get against the wall. From just around the corner, two very famous Starfleet officers could be heard.
"Is that Kirk?" Boimler asked
Mariner nodded, feeling just as excited as the rest of them but doing an excellent job of hiding it. Kirk and Spock were speaking with someone through the communication unit.
"Bridge to Captain Kirk." A young man with a Russian accent spoke.
"Kirk here." The captain responded
“Mister Baris is waiting on channel E to speak to you, sir."
Mariners’ heart was beating fast. She may have acted like she didn't care, but she did grow up as a Starfleet brat, and though she may have seen Captain Kirk in a holodeck simulation, it wasn't the same as being a couple of feet away from him.
"Mister Baris is coming on." The young man spoke again.
"Yes, Mister Baris. What can I do for you?" Kirk’s voice was pleasant
"Kirk, this station is swarming with Klingons." A man by the name of Baris replied.
"I was not aware, Mister Baris, that twelve Klingons constitutes a swarm."
"Captain Kirk, I consider your security measures a disgrace. In my opinion, you have taken this entire..."
At this point, Boimler had lost focus on that conversation as his eyes drifted to the other side of the hallway. There, a man with a deeper voice and a tall woman spoke. Both looked as if they were doing routine maintenance. The woman kept glancing back at the captain and the first officer.
"I had no idea." The woman began
"What?" The man replied, fiddling with some machinery.
“He's so much more handsome in person. And those eyes."
"Kirk had quite the reputation as a ladies' man."
"Not him. Spock."
Boimler noticed that, just like him, they looked out of place. He continued to listen.
"I can't believe you don't at least want to meet Captain Kirk."
"That's the last thing on my mind."
"Oh, come on, Benjamin. Are you telling me you're not the tiniest bit interested in meeting one of the most famous men in Starfleet history?"
Benjamin? He thought as he slowly went through all the people he knew named Benjamin in his head.
Benjamin Anderson
Benjamin Taylor
Benjamin Sisko
Sisko!
It was Captain Sisko! And the woman next to him must be one of his crew members. Jadzia Dax, maybe? His face twisted in confusion. What was he doing in this time?
"Guys, look!" Boimler whispered and motioned his head to the other side of the hallway.
"Is that... Sisko?" Rutherford asked. "He looks different," he added, still getting used to how everything looked in this period.
"Two famous Starfleet Captains in one day?!?" Tendi bounced on her heels.
"Why is he here?" Boimler looked at Mariner.
"I don't know, something to do with a Tribble and a bomb,"
"A bomb?!"
She shrugged. "Relax, it's on the space station. We will stay on the ship,"
"How do you even know all this?"
"I have my ways,"
The Ensigns decided that it was time to get moving. They didn't want to create too much suspicion by huddling up against the wall. The halls were so crowded, Constitution-class ships were certainly packed, even without the hallway bedrooms of the Cerritos. The colored lights enthralled Tendi. She was so used to sterile fluorescent lights that the soft blues, purples, and yellows were dazzling. She had read about these types of ships, but reading about it and seeing it were two different things.
"Gosh, I love Constitution-class ships," Tendi said.
But there was no response. She twisted her head back and forth, slightly panicking that she had lost her other three friends. She wanted to yell out their names, but that would raise too many questions. She would have to silently slither through the confusing corridors of the ship to find them, all while looking natural. Looking back and forth one more time, she decided to continue forward. Turning down a hallway, she noticed that there was a turbolift at the end. Inside were two men. One was a bulkier man in a red shirt, while the other man with slicked-back hair wore blue with a single strip of gold on the bottom of his sleeve.
"Deck twenty-one. Deck twenty-one. I said, Deck twenty-one." The man in the red shirt said. He's getting more frustrated every time he spoke.
"Maybe if you said please." The other man replied
Tendi remembered from Rutherford’s conversation earlier that turbolifts were not entirely voice commanded at this time. She continued to walk towards the lift.
"Maybe it's jammed. Help me get this wall panel off." The redshirt was starting to open a panel when the disguised Orion walked in. She put one hand on the wall handle and crossed her fingers, on the other hand, hoping that this would work.
"Deck fifteen." She spoke, and the lift started to move. She breathed a secret sigh of relief.
"I won't tell anyone if you don't." The medical man, with a British accent, spoke.
"My lips are sealed."
"Guys, where's Tendi?" Rutherford asks, trying to find one of his best friends.
"Aw Sh*t, we must have lost her" Mariner looked some more. "Tend-"
Boimler clamped his hand against her mouth. "Are you insane? You wanna mess up history?"
"Ok, then how do you want to find her?"
"Constitution-class ships only held about 300 people, so it shouldn't be too hard to find her, especially compared to a Galaxy-class ship," Rutherford suggested.
All three realize that the only way to find their friend was to just walk through the halls and hope they stumble across her. They started down the aisle, maneuvering their way through the mass amounts of people. At one point, Beckett hit somebody with her elbow.
"Oh, sorry." She said
The woman smiled and replied. She was wearing an operations red dress, and her hair was teased on top of her head. Her sleeves bore lieutenant stripes. "It's ok," she said as she walked away. She was making baby noises at something in her hand.
Mariner craned her neck just enough to see that in the lieutenants’ arms was a small Tribble. "It can't be long now."
Tendi saw the first baby Tribble in one of the turbolifts she was taking back down. She was alerted when she heard soft sweet cooing on the other side of the lift, and she couldn't resist. She picked it up, so happy to see an unneutered baby Tribble. At first, she only saw one every once in a while. Maybe one would be stuck to a wall. Another was in an older doctor's hands, and he was scanning it with a tricorder. However, the amount started to multiply, and before she knew it, Tribbles were lining every single hallway. They came and all shapes and sizes. Some were white with gray spots, and some were a beautiful shiny Brown. They stuck to the walls and the ceiling, and cooing filled the hallway, along with the occasional screech when someone stepped on one.
She tried to resist the temptation and only grab one, but every time she turned around, she found herself face-to-face with another ball of fur, and soon she had an entire armful of Tribbles. Curiously, as she wandered about trying to find her three friends, she saw Sisko and that other female officer scanning Tribbles. Both looked frazzled. She realized that they were scanning for a bomb of sorts and remembered that Mariner said it was on the space station, not on the Enterprise.
Speaking of Mariner, she finally found her friends walking towards her in a hallway. The pep in her step grew as she walked towards them.
"They are so cute!" Tendi showed off her arm full of at least ten Tribbles.
"Let's get to a private room, watch how a Tribble gives birth, and then get back to our own time," Boimler continued. "I don't want any time travel shenanigans on my file. It's not very Captain-like."
"Oh please," Mariner replied, "you realize how much stuff was on Kirk's record?"
The four came across an empty meeting room. They all walked in, Rutherford closed the door, and Tendi set one of her many Tribbles on the table. With her pad on hand, she was ready to take notes.
Tribbles reproduce fast, so it was only a matter of time before the one on the table, which Tendi lovingly named Warpy, gave birth. The ball of fur soon went from cooing to screeching as it tensed up half its body. Soon from underneath the adult Tribble, baby Tribbles emerged. Tendi was so excited, but the other three just watched with confused and uncomfortable faces. After she finished taking notes, Boimler suggested they leave.
"I'm going to miss the blonde hair, but I can't wait to have my old body back," Tendi spoke as Mariner pulled out her blue gem.
"Tell me about it; my eyes are the same color as my skin. That can't be healthy," she replied
"Maybe people look like this because of issues with the older technology," Rutherford suggested.
Mariner spoke to the gem the time she wanted to go back to. The portal opened underneath them.
"No one's got any Tribbles, right?" Mariner asked.
All of them nodded, and Mariner was the first to jump through the portal. Rutherford followed, and then Boimler. Tendi turned around one last time to her Tribbles.
"Bye, Warpy," she spoke as she jumped through the portal.
"Much fu*king better" Mariner cracked her back in the Cerritos’ shuttle bay. Tendi glanced over her notes and deactivated her disguise. Beckett came over to her and wrapped an arm around her.
"You had fun?"
"So much, thanks" Tendi smiled.
"How about we change and get some tacos?" Beckett spoke as she walked towards the doors.
"Okie Dokie" Rutherford and the other two ensigns followed.
As they walked to the mess hall, Mariner spoke to Boimler, “Glad you could join us. Ya know, you actually look confident in that old uniform! And kinda charming.”
“Thank you, I feel confident” He did a cheesy smirk.
“Annnnd now it’s gone.” She said, trying to hide the slightest blush.
They continued to their bunks to change. Unknown to Boimler, however, was a small ball of fur stuck to his vintage uniform boots.
Three days later
Ransom woke up for his morning shift at the sound of his alarm. When he reached over to turn it off, he felt a ball of fur right on his alarm clock. Upon opening his eyes, he saw that Tribbles filled his entire room, all cooing.
"Who brought an unneutered Tribble on board!?"

Lt., Phone Home Part 2 (Part 1)
The Engineer’s Adventures
1-1 • 1-2 • 2 • 3 • 4
A sequel to Lt., Phone Home For @autumnleaves1991-blog who said she’d read one if I wrote it. Pairing: Captain Christopher Pike x F!Reader (no Y/N) Warnings: none really! Canon typical injuries to other characters, alcohol consumption, plot WC: 1.6k A/N: I’m still so new at this!
Tumblr media
If you’d been able to finish your level three diagnostic before the Layrians sent you to the past, you would have detected the fault and this wouldn’t have happened.
You only have a second to think that, though, because ‘this’ is a console exploding in Chief Engineer Louvier’s face, sending him, Ensign Devrin, a Tellarite newly transferred to the Enterprise, and Crewman Park flying.
“Engineering to sickbay! Medical Emergency!” You have your communicator in one hand, tricorder in the other, scanning. You want to check on Louvier, see if he’s okay, but there’s a fault in the EPS system and if you don’t get it locked down quickly, the warp core may blow. You look around to see who you have, and a lot of shocked eyes meet your gaze. You take charge.
“Harrison, see to Louvier and the others. Okorafor, vent the plasma manifolds. Mason, isolate the console from the rest of the system. Everyone else stand by.” You run through the checklists in your head.
“Engineering to Bridge, there’s a problem with the EPS system and we’re going to need to shut down the warp core immediately. Louvier is injured,” you add, explaining why you’re calling and not him.
“Yellow Alert. Helm, drop us out of warp. Keep us updated Lieutenant,” Number One’s voice is calm as you feel the ship’s vibrations change as you drop into normal space.
“Computer, emergency warp core shutdown. Authorisation Gamma Epsilon one-two-zero.”
“Unable to comply. Control circuits are offline.”
The console must have taken out the circuitry when it blew. No time to fix it – you need to do this manually.
You dash to the other central console, the one that’s still undamaged, and start entering commands.
“Michaels, if I can’t shut the core down we may need to eject it. Can you check those systems are running please?”
You really need someone to keep an eye on the impulse engine too, since if that overheats it can cause a lot of problems but you can’t eject it. You look around – a team of medics have arrived and are loading the injured onto stretchers, helped by a couple of engineering crewmen. You should be getting reinforcements soon now that the ship’s at yellow alert, but they aren’t here yet. You spy a gold uniform, standing out among the red and blue.
“Captain?” What’s he doing here?
“I was passing by when I heard the yellow alert. Number One told me the problem was here. Can I help?”
“Yes.” You point to a console. “Monitor the temperature of the impulse drive. If it gets above 400 Kelvin, increase the coolant. If it doesn’t come back down, let me know.”
“Aye, Lieutenant.”
You go back to your console, manually going through the power-down checklist. It’s stressful, especially when there are a few hiccups along the way with errors related to the damage that occurred, but you’re in your element here.
“Warp core offline,” you announce at last, as more staff arrive finally. Now you can get to fixing the actual problem.
“You have more than earned that drink,” Captain Pike says, as you walk down the corridor together some time later. The ship is back at warp, Louvier is in sickbay still recovering from plasma burns, but he, Devrin and Park will make a full recovery. Repairs are almost complete, and you would have stayed until they were done had Pike not gently remarked that you had mentioned you had a prior arrangement. You hadn’t mentioned it, of course, but no one else was to know. Pike had stayed in Engineering for the duration, fetching and carrying, checking readings and generally making himself useful. Having him around was good for crew morale, especially when you hadn’t known the prognosis for your colleagues. Your friends. Now the remainder of the work is in the capable hands of Lt Asher who came in a couple of hours early for gamma shift tonight.
“I need it,” you say, fervent. “This has been a day.”
“I didn’t think I was going to be able to drag you out of Engineering, but now that I have... would you like to get dinner? I think we could both use a decent meal.”
You suddenly realise you’re starving. “Thank you, Captain. I’d like that.” You smile at him, and he grins back, showing his dimples again.
“Call me Chris now we’re off duty,” he says as you reach the turbolift and he pauses to let you go first.
“Sure, Chris,” it comes out easier than it did on Earth in the past, somehow. Maybe you’re used to it.
The Captain’s dining room is spacious, and well appointed. It has a dining table and chairs, and sofa and low table with a vase of fresh flowers beneath a large window, showing the stars going by at warp. The lighting is soft, but a small spotlight highlights a model of the Enterprise on a shelf in the the corner. The overall effect is pleasing, but it seems a little impersonal, somehow. Except maybe the large earthenware pot on the shelf below the miniature ship. That doesn’t seem like the sort of thing a starship designer would put there.
“A traditional Navajo pot,” Chris says, following your gaze. “It’s from California, where I grew up. I don’t eat here often, but even here it’s good to have a reminder of home.”
He heads to the synthesiser. “Is chilli okay? It’s based on a family recipe. But I do keep tweaking it. It’s my go to comfort food, after a day like this.”
“That sounds really good,” you reply, letting him pull out a chair for you and watching as he brings nachos, sour cream, salsa, guacamole and two wine glasses from the synthesiser.
“It’s not beer, but it is real,” he says, opening a cupboard set beneath the synthesiser and withdrawing a bottle of red wine and a corkscrew hanging just inside the door.
He pours you each a glass. “Zinfandel, from California. Another taste of home. Cheers,” he says.
“Cheers,” you reply, clinking your glass and taking a sip. The flavour is bold and you taste berries, with maybe a hint of liquorice and vanilla. “This is good,” you add, taking another sip as he brings the food over.
“Given today, only the best will do,” he gives you a lopsided smile, blue eyes twinkling, and you can’t help but be charmed.
Conversation flows easily over the delicious meal – Pike’s chilli is good, and you tell him so. He tells you about growing up in the desert, and you chat about your former postings, swapping stories of engineering disasters. As the evening wears on you find yourself on the sofa, box of dark chocolate truffles on the table in front of you, with only a couple left. You yawn a little, and catch sight of the chronometer above the synthesiser – when did it get so late?
“Keeping you up past your bedtime?” Chris winks at you, and you grin back, totally at ease.
“You’ve got to admit, it’s been a long day. I can’t help thinking that if those aliens could’ve held off for a few minutes before pulling us through time, I could have finished my diagnostic, and the excitement in Engineering wouldn’t have happened,” you say as you stand.
“You were good, though,” he says, standing with you. “Not many days you can say you saved both the timeline and the ship.”
You feel yourself warming at the praise, and cover it by getting your jacket from where you’d shed it on the back of your chair earlier. Chris helps you put it on, lingering close.
“I believe it’s traditional at the end of the date to walk the lady home, but I’m guessing you can find your way,” he says with another little smile, voice a little deeper.
“Maybe that tradition wouldn’t be appropriate, but I can think of another that would work,” you say, and you feel your heart beating a little faster.
“Yeah?” He asks, his hands on your shoulders, and your eyes linger on his mouth before travelling up to his soft blue eyes.
“Yeah,” you say, and your voice comes out breathy but you don’t mind because he’s drawing you closer, one hand on your back, one hand moving along your jawline. He tilts his head and your hands come up to his chest, feeling the muscle there beneath his shirt. Your eyes flutter closed as his lips find yours and then the ship falls away and it’s just you, him, and the stars making warp trails around you. You gasp slightly and open your mouth, and his tongue brushes yours and you taste chocolate, red wine, and him. Your hands move round his neck as the kiss deepens, and you press against him.
Eventually you break apart, breathing heavily. There’s a slight look of surprise in his eyes, and you think it must be reflected in yours – you didn’t expect your good night kiss to be that intense.
“Well, good night, Chris. Thank you,” you say, fastening your jacket, trying to get a handle on your breathing.
“Dinner tomorrow?” He asks, eyes searching your face. “Maybe, uh... in my quarters?”
“Yes, I’d like that,” you say. “See you tomorrow?”
“Tomorrow,” he says, taking your hand and pressing a kiss to your fingers, eyes full of promise. You pull your hand away reluctantly, smile, and leave before you can get tempted into anything more. Even though you’d like to you have alpha shift in the morning and he has a whole ship to run.
You wonder what tomorrow will be like. Maybe another unusual day would be a good thing.

OKAY it's tng update time. i forgot to do it yesterday so today i'm doing four eps. sunday we did "evolution" and "the ensigns of command" and yesterday we caught "the survivors" and "who watches the watchers"
evolution: this one had a slow start and i didn't much care for the guest character of the week but once it got going i actually had fun rooting for him to fail. you SHOOT the nanites? jail for dr whoever! jail for 1000 years!!
wesley was not really annoying in this episode! i was so prepared for the worst when it was like oh wesley's SCHOOL EXPERIMENT has GONE WRONG but it was fine actually!! he was like. normal
i was soooo glad to see beverly crusher again. a season of pulaski really makes her shine in comparison. PLUS she didn't talk about being a woman like the WHOLE time. i mean she kind of did but it was fine except when she got nosey about wesley's dating life lol i mean the woman has been away from her son for a year. also idr whoever was like man not cool beverly for leaving UNFAIR. she got fired. it wasn't her fault. idk if i've ever defended her before. feels weird.
FASCINATED with guinans backstory. when she started talking about her son i was like oh q is her son! of course! no, idiot. a real luke-and-clary moment. iykyk. tho technically q can make himself look like whatever and adoptive still counts. it's fine. they have something going on but idk what
the ensigns of command: this one was SOOOOO good what a breath of fucking fresh air
i LOVED data in this! i loved that he got to do stuff and be important and fail and nobody was mean to him and in the end he succeeded. AND got a love interest. wonderful. treat him really niceys. also that meme about the book being shorter if [character] had a gun. that's data. good for him
also i KNOW he knows how kissing works i didn't forget he fucked tasha yar
this episode was surprisingly funny. you get gradually more and more frustrated with the leader until data dead ass pulls a fucking phaser on him. you get more and more frustrated with the sheliak and it's like kind of funny that they keep hanging up on picard, but then picard rules lawyers them and hangs up on THEM and does the fucking white glove inspection while he metaphorically lets the phone ring off the hook. the longer he took to answer the funnier it got, i was genuinely cracking up. idr what post it was that i said i had yet to see picard's spine and so he was utterly unlikable but i saw it in the episode where data went on trial and i saw it here in a much funnier way. he simply had enough it was fantastic
data and the music!!! he was so sad when picard had to leave and i was very pleasantly surprised when picard took the time to not only listen to the recording later but compliment data on it and encourage his creative side. it's so much nicer than anyone was to data in the first two seasons 🥺
the survivors: this one was...okay. not great but definitely watchable. the mystery definitely kept me hooked bc i wanted to know what was going on, but it would have been much better if we'd had the tools to solve it, the way picard did, instead of the answer just being "this guy is just magic." i did like that his wife turned out to not even be real because that's fucking nuts but like. for what purpose. like we were yelling theories like oh her tea is poisoned! the music box is cursed! and meanwhile it's like no he's just magic. there was no trail of clues to follow at all.
poor deanna in this episode lol. points off for having her naked under that blanket. for what purpose do you need to undress her to treat her...y'all don't do that to riker. that said the psychic torture via music box was kind of metal actually like obviously horrible but i like that she CAN be incapacitated
also, wtf was that at the end where he was like yeah i killed every member of that entire species even the ones who are lightyears away because my magic is that powerful. and picard was just like. alright well we don't have laws that can try you so go back to your planet with your fake wife ig. bye!
YOU LITERALLY DO HAVE LAWS. THEY WERE GOING TO BRING KODOS IN TO FACE JUSTICE YOU LITERALLY DO HAVE LAWS FOR PEOPLE WHO COMMIT GENOCIDE. it's fine. i'm normal.
who watches the watchers: our rule for s3 is that we're watching all of them until we hit three duds in a row. this one was DEFINITELY a dud
first of all, the breaking of the prime directive was ridiculously sloppy here. SECONDLY, it is ALWAYS a bad idea to have some culture mistake anybody for god. it wouldn't have mattered if every one of those aliens had been white and picard had not been white it STILL would have been racist but it's even MORE racist because they're worshipping AND KNEELING BEFORE a white guy with a british accent. it's particularly insulting too that these are supposed to be "proto-vulcans"
also, if they really were proto-vulcans they would NOT have been rational as presented they would have been off the fucking wall insane with bloodlust. do none of us remember anything about canon. god.
the fantasy racefaking. THEY LOOKED SO BAD LOL
our main side guy was quite annoying and basically just looking for an excuse to kill deanna? should have let him die tbh
anyway it was a stinker. the longer the fake worship dragged on the worse it became.
that being said, s3 has largely been a blast so far. tbh i talked a big game but part of me didn't believe u guys when you said it got better. but it literally did?! and thank god bc i don't know how much more i could have taken lol

one if my absolute favorite fandom things is when a show references another show that a guest actor was on.
think the children of the gods (stargate sg-1 1x01) when carter says they macgyver’d a supercomputer to make the gate system. it’s an in-joke only for fans of richard dean anderson, whose previous role was the eponymous macgyver.
so seeing wil wheaton get a star trek shoutout on leverage has thrown me into a nerd frenzy.
he’s playing colin mason. aka chaos. aka the kobayashi maru. a hacker and hardison’s mirror.
and yeah, wheaton’s pretty well known for his stint as wesley crusher (in this household we stan our ensign king). so it’s not quite an easter egg.
but it also is. that is, if you are trekkie. because then you know it’s a hint that colin mason is the exact opposite of wesley crusher.
see most people, not in fandom (like the cia who give colin the alias) know that the kobayashi maru is a star trek reference. maybe they even know it’s a tos reference and not tng. but that’s fine! it’s an easter egg. they laugh and move on.
but a trekkie connects the dots. knows the original kobayashi maru was in st II the wrath of khan. where a young james t kirk hacked the character-defining no-win training scenario. training meant to teach loss. to prepare future starfleet officers for the burdens of command.
a trekkie knows that wesley had his own kobayashi maru. in the first duty (st tng 5x19) when he’s pressured into a cover-up of a flight training accident that claimed the life of another ensign. an accident where he and his friends are at fault.
but unless you’ve actually seen tos and tng and the movies. if you’re not a trekkie and not in the fandom then you’re not going to understand that the kobayashi maru isn’t about cheating to win. it’s about never giving up—no matter the odds.
kirk’s point in cheating on the kobayashi maru was not to win for winnings sake. he’s making a point. he’s making it into the definition of a character-defining moment. a first duty. he’s saying that he will never accept a no-win situation when it comes to the lives of his crew. he’ll protect them anyway he can. he turns the kobayashi maru into a synonym for truth and hope and persistence.
wesley though, has already lied. he’s particpated in the cover-up. and it’s not a test. it’s real life with real stakes. and one of wesley’s friends is already dead. there’s no winning. no outcome that could possibly make the situation better.
that’s why it’s his is his kobayashi maru. his character-defining moment. his first duty. he has to choose to tell the truth, hope he can be forgiven, and persist on his moral course. because it’s the right thing to do.
wesley is kirk’s mirror, but not a dark one. but only a trekkie is going to understand how similar kirk and wesley’s choices are. the nuance of how they do and not mirror each other.
and all of our leverage characters (except sophie because she’s “dead”) have a mirror on the other con team. a counterpart. nate has starke. parker has apollo. eliot has mikel. and, of course, hardison has colin.
but because of a reference to tng that itself references wrath of khan we get a preview of the outcome. we get a nod that colin is the bad guy. he’s kirk—if kirk had cheated only to win. he’s wesley—if wesley had lied to save his reputation. he’s the kobayashi maru—when you don’t understand the kobayashi maru.
he’s the dark mirror.
and that, my fellow nerds. my fellow trekkies. that is the secret language of fandom.
and yeah, this ep aired in 2009. a good dozen years ago. but I’d like to think that wil wheaton got the reference. that he understood the implications of that easter egg line. because he’s always spoken fluent fandom and he’s a trekkie, just like us.
