KUNIKIDA ISN’T THE AZURE KING, RIGHT?? RIGHT!?!?
I let it slide the first time I watched the series, but I subconsciously expected to get some sort of explanation for why the two characters looked so alike, but an explanation never came.
It’s not coincidental. Despite having his face covered, Bones made sure we saw the Azure King’s hair and eye color, and they match Kunikida’s EXACTLY. Even the shape of the eyes are the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And like, the whole episode, they kept talking about how the Azure King “lived by his ideals,” saying it numerous times. They talked about him the same way the ADA talks about Kunikida. We also have the similarities over his education and connections in government organizations.
Even down to the fact that Kunikida is drawn to and attracted to Sasaki, who was the Azure King’s lover. Down to the fact that she tells Kunikida, at gunpoint, “you resemble him.”
The Azure King and Kunikida even share the same Japanese voice actor. The irl Nobuko Sasaki was married to the irl Doppo Kunikida, but they divorced early into their marriage.
Was Kunikida the Azure King!?! I told myself he wasn’t, the first time I saw it, because I expected more information later, but like I said, we never got any.
I know I’m not the first person to theorize about this, but I just wish we knew more. The Azure King could just be an elaborate allegory for what Kunikida could have been, if he went down that path. But that’s…such an excessively detailed allegory. Like why go that hard if it’s just a parallel?

i'm going to be real with you guys for a moment. i don't think i'll continue following bsd much after this point
#i take back what i said about being excited for what's to come. i mean i am. in a very general impersonal way.#but the way the series is going. if the ending of the anime is going to be followed by the manga in a similar direction#is just very different from the silly armed detective agency vs port mafia authors with superpowers slightly high-stakes slice of life#that i originally signed up for. i've felt this way the whole decay of angels arc and just stuck around to see what happens#and because i care about the characters. bsd was always a character-focused manga for me#but the direction it seems to be taking is this massive epic entire-world-at-stake military scifi drama#where super epic power-up style ability weapons (and one-off overpowered nameless ability users are introduced and killed off in the same#scene. like the time manipulation catgirl) take the forefront at the expense of actual character focus and character development#like why are most of the (original) cast completely unaccounted for in what was meant to be a satisfying ending.#did asagiri forget that atsushi is the main character. why did tachihara's and sigma's arcs get cut short like that.#and frankly i feel like bsd started to take this direction from storm bringer onwards. the focus and scope of it is very different#to for example the untold origins or dazai's entrance exam or even 55 minutes. but if i were to theorise i would say that the scope of#the current direction of bsd must have started germinating during the 55 minutes light novel. if you can see what i mean#anyway more importantly i find that the tone is now entirely different from early bsd. it's just not the series that i fell in love with#so i think it's best that i stop here before letting it turn sour like jujutsu kaisen is to me now.#i have the manga (and anime) that i can reread (rewatch) up to the perfect crime arc whenever i want#i can reread the sskk fight of volume 20 whenever i want. i can revisit sigma and nikolai's chapters. there's wan. there's the light novels#and there's the wonderful fanfics and fanart and so many metas to read. that's what brings me joy more than the series itself nowadays.#that's all. end of era i guess. to an extent

kinda wild to me that one of the most compelling aspects of both Chuuya and Kunikida's characters to me, that I never really see talked about, is how they're heavily set on a doomed crash course towards complete and utter destruction, and how I am so, so worried for them both.....
#bungou stray dogs#been thinking a lot about chuuya lately (shocking for me i know (said with no sarcasm truly lmao it is rare for me))#cause of the 15 manga and also playing the fucking jeht quest in genshin impact ugh (where's the one dual genshin bsd fan who Understands)#but like this pressure has been building up for chuuya for so long due to being used and manipulated by all these people#first the sheep then mori then verlaine then still mori now#he was groomed since childhood just like dazai#but unlike dazai he didn't have an oda to help him get out of the mafia........ he's still stuck there#and his personality is different from dazai's. dazai was more self-aware imo (but still a groomed emotionally abused kid don't get me wrong#but chuuya's whole thing is needing to belong and wanting a leader to be loyal to but ending up in positions of leadership himself#which makes him feel pressured but he accepts and stifles any negative feelings just because he wants to belong#and all this crushed him with the events in the light novels and yeah he went through character growth but he's...... Still In The Mafia...#and that fucking scene asagiri added to the cannibalism stage play i don't think hardly anyone even knows about bc IT'S NOT DISCUSSED ANYMO#where mori emotionally manipulates him with the flags!!! and it deeply hurts him!!! and he presumably deals with that shit all the time!!!#it is WORRISOME. it WORRIES ME okay.#chuuya doesn't have anyone who can save him from the mafia (dazai is in no position to okay; it's all he can do just to try to save himself#and it's so so scary. it spells awful things for him.#didn't asagiri say he'd have a rough path or something??? and he added that fucking scene in the play!!! it haunts me!!#i fully expected this shit to hit a turning point in the meursault arc but we can't have nice things i guess#and as for kunikida a;lskdfl (took me this long to get to him oop) literally the ending of Entrance Exam (the novel) is just#One Big Foreshadowing for Kunikida's downfall#he's compared to the azure king for a reason. Sasaki saw the azure king in him for a reason. it's fucking worrying!!!!!#there hasn't really been anything like that since in the manga (just like for chuuya lol ugh) but he's TERRIBLE at coping with his trauma#and it only gets more apparent once shit hit the fan in the doa/hunting dogs/meursault arc#it's not good!!! i'm worried for kunikida too!!!!#even if the manga isn't focusing on this these worries are always in the back of my mind man#both kunikida and chuuya are doomed to hit some kind of breaking point eventually and i await those moments with dread yet anticipation#i want dazai to be able to save kunikida from the despair being too good a person brings the way he couldn't save oda#and chuuya.... if we get a scene with him & mori mirroring the one in dark era where dazai finds out that mori orchestrated the kids' death#oh man i think i'll fucking die (give it to me i need to cry)

Or I might still stick around in the sidelines and ramble about 2.3 like I’ve been doing for the past year, haha. Ah, well, we’ll see

Seems like this chapter just about wrapped up the Mole Hunt arc. I decided to analyze a bit more than I usually do with my chapter reviews since there was a lot to talk about on the Twiyor front!
When Fiona questioned Twilight about not killing Yuri, he gave his official "for the mission" reason, but slipped up by calling Yor "Yor-san" instead of "Yor Briar." This made it obvious to Fiona (who already knows about him softening) that he's trying desperately hard to cover up those feelings. Even though this would have been a good opportunity for her to imply that she's a better fit for the wife role, she doesn't even try because she knows Twilight would defend "Yor-san" in every subtle way he could.
Tumblr media
When he gets home and finds out that Yor doesn't actually have gripes with him, he's relieved of that last load of stress and is finally able to relax, causing him to collapse (similar to the very first chapter when he collapsed after Anya passed the Eden entrance exam). After he realizes how utterly exhausted he is, he can't help but ask Yor to help out with his housework.
Tumblr media
Her reply is what really makes everything sink in for him - despite all his attempts to be a flawless spy, she doesn't want him to be that way. She's happy when she can be useful to him and thinks it's bad if he pushes himself to be perfect all the time.
Tumblr media
And yet, that's exactly what he has to be in order to survive as a spy. The fact that he had to ask someone for help with simple housework, plus someone telling him that he doesn't have to be perfect, made him recall the feeling he had when he looked into Wheeler's eyes...that he lives in a world where you have to be perfect in order to survive, and having any kind of weakness just won't due.
Tumblr media
While Twilight continues to be clueless about Fiona's feelings for him among other things, what he does realize at the end of this arc is his own feelings - that he does have a weakness. He's beginning to understand more than ever that a spy can't afford to be anything but perfect. And yet, his refusal to kill Yuri, which is a result of him caring about Yor (even though he gave Fiona his usual "for the mission" reason, she saw right through it) is conflicting him even more.
I also have to point out how considerate Yor was of Loid's exhaustion - she completely pushed Yuri away, even after noticing he was injured. She didn't even invite him to stay and have tea with them!
Tumblr media
What Twilight was about to say to Yor (in his mind) before Yuri interrupted is debatable, but going by his previous line of thought, it was probably something bittersweet like "which is why...once Operation Strix is over, I'll have to leave the Forgers" or possibly something more immediate, where he now realizes how compromised he truly is and so might reconsider the stipulations of Operation Strix even before it's over. Though I think it's more of the former since his thoughts in the shower in the next scene make it seem like he's not ready to do anything drastic yet, but the idea is still gnawing at him.
Tumblr media
Fiona had noticed his leaking emotions way back when she was first introduced, but this is the first time Twilight himself is realizing it and not denying it. Whether anything major will change in his actions from now on is yet to be seen. Will there be another aftermath chapter or two with Twilight still being jostled by this realization? Or will things go back to normal now and he'll brush those feelings aside for another day? It seems like Yuri has been totally thrown off the scent, so his identity should be safe for the time being. Will Anya get to read his mind the next morning and finally find out everything that happened? The next new chapter won't be out for another 4 weeks, so brace yourself for a grueling wait!

everyone should read Dazai's Entrance Exam (the original Azure Apostle/Messenger arc) because the amount of changes they made when adapting the plot to fit it into 2 episodes in the present instead of the past cannot be covered without basically doing a full recap of the entire book.
The intrigue is built around the uncertainty of who the Azure Apostle is. Not in a "who could this person be?" way, but in a "oh no, could the azure apostle really be Dazai testing the ADA's limits?" way.
Dazai tagging along Kunikida during the investigation is his entrance exam. There is no trust established yet. Everyone is on edge. Dazai seems to know more than he should, but never shares. Fukuzawa gave Kunikida a gun and told him to shoot Dazai dead if Dazai turns out to be bad news and a danger to the ADA and the city.
You as the reader know Dazai will join the ADA. If you watched the anime you know the big lines and how things end. Or do you, really? So many things are different in this version, is the ending gonna be the same? Your knowledge barely settles your nerves.
Read it. It's good. It's honestly among Asagiri's best in terms of plot structure and foreshadowing. It's an actual mystery. You will like it.

“The ADA don’t care about Dazai!!!!!!”
They have a detailed plan on how to literally fucking defy death and bring him back to life, a plan which Yosano is heavily involved in
Kunikida routinely calls and cooks for him. They fight in perfect sync after four days of them meeting
Fukuzawa trusted Dazai ON HIS WORDS ALONE with Atsushi’s entrance exam and getting him used to the Agency and didn’t get involved just because he put his faith in Dazai
Atsushi hallucinates Dazai when he’s in distress and looking for help, the fear he had for the Headmaster was once the strongest force in his life was replaced with his gratitude and love for Dazai
Fukuzawa says during the Guild Arc that he wouldn’t even consider allying themselves with the PM, but he’s still fine with Dazai, the Demon Prodigy, joining the Agency’s ranks
Ranpo knew from the start that Dazai was an executive for the fucking Port Mafia, the Demon Prodigy and just went “sure fucking whatever” and let him go through his entrance exam to join DESPITE THAT THE AGENCY WAS MADE FOR RANPO AND AGAINST CRIME
Dazai trained Naomi. This was never elaborated on but it did happen
As Ranpo and Kunikida state while debating on whether to rescue Atsushi: the Agency doesnt interfere with someone’s personal issues or unless Fukuzawa tells them to ig
Stories are always more fucking interesting if there’s conflict between characters, ‘good’ or ‘evil’. The Agency are full of clashing characters, complicated backstories and nuances and they’re going to clash against each other. That’s human.
He’s proven time and time again that he won’t kill himself, that his plans are good and strong and for the Agency. He can handle himself and they trust in that

I think it was implied in the Light Novel "Osamu Dazai's Entrance Exam", which was basically just the Azure Messager Arc without Atsushi in it, since it was two years before Atsushi joined, that Sasaki and the Azure King did know each other, without his face being wrapped up.
So that could mean two things: one, Kunikida got plastic surgery, or two, Sasaki knew exactly who he was, just as he knew who she was, but neither of them knew what to do or if they should rat the other out because they were in love at some point. In the novel, before Sasaki dies, her last words were "I... love..." to Kunikida, who had her in his arms after she was shot- she didn't die instantly.
Personally, I think Kunikida *is* the Azure King, and that he survived his "suicide bombing" because the bombing was caused using The Matchless Poet, his Ability. Or he's just... really good at not dying to bombs, as proven when he fought against Tecchou. The reason he stopped, the reason he looked after Rokuzō, was because innocent detectives died, which went against his Ideals of innocents being killed.
What are your thoughts?
I think that the light novel makes it a TINY bit more obvious that Kunikida isn’t the Azure King, but I don’t think it completely rules out the possibility.
In the light novel, the Azure King was said to have graduated from an elite educational institution, but without clarifying if it was a university or a high school. The novel then tells us the Azure King studied abroad at a university for an unspecified period of time (which could have been as short as a single semester—or half-semester—as far as traditional study abroad programs go).
The Azure King then worked for the government in some way for an—again, unspecified—period of time (meaning his tenure in any organization could have been brief enough to fall in line with Kunikida’s age bracket) before he began his bombings on government facilities.
Kunikida was a college dropout, as most of us already know. He would have been 20 years old during Dazai’s entrance exam. He worked part time as a math teacher, which gave him the freedom to work for the ADA simultaneously, but again, we don’t know when he started teaching, nor for how long he held the job.
As unlikely as it is, he legitimately COULD have done all of those same things within the 2 years of graduating high school and establishing himself as a member of the Armed Detective Agency by the time he first meets Dazai at age 20.
Now, like I said, the light novel does make that possibility less likely, but not impossible. Do I think, truly, that Kunikida is the Azure King? The largest part of me says no.
But then Bones had to animate the Azure King the way they did, and cast the same voice actor as Kunikida, and pull all of these parallels in front of our faces in a way we’re forced to acknowledge. It’s odd, the level of dedication the production team went into these parallels.
I also think, during the conversation with Sasaki and Dazai in the cafe, that Kunikida’s behavior was hella suspicious. He actually made me MORE suspicious by how he reacted to the theory that the Azure King was still alive, and could be pulling the strings in the present day.
These are just some of the things I think about. As a story, it’s delightful for me to have the possibility introduced to us. A part of me loves not knowing, really, because that makes it more interesting. The other part of me demands more information, and goddamn Bones, they only made the drama juicier by not giving us a clear answer.

[SPOILERS FOR LIGHT NOVELS] i don't think Kunikida was ever okay
so i was rereading the light novels and... yeah i don't think Kunikida's okay. bear in mind that these were either set before the start of the anime or were set before the end of season 1, so things such as walking alone, cannibalism arc and decay of angels arc had NOT happened yet (stressing this point as much as possible). i've also included roughly when in the BSD timeline the light novels were set and which pages i found the information on.
LN1 (s1e6 and s1e7 - azure messenger arc)
is absolutely terrified of the dark - i'm specifying the dark here instead of ghosts, which he specifically mentions in the anime, because he says he doesn't believe in them. but all the same, he's definitely not (keep telling yourself that, honey) shaking and crying (pages 24 and 25)
even at age twenty is willing to let himself die to save the other hostages - it says in the light novel that he is in fact suffering the effects of the poison gas, and still tries to save them despite Dazai and Sasaki stopping him (page 29)
made sure he still wouldn't have been able to kill Dazai - despite holding Fukuzawa's orders in high regard they would go against his ideals, which is why he never brought the real gun with him (pages 76-78)
the entire ending, pretty much - he had to watch both Sasaki, who he cared about, and Rokuzou, who he raised like his own son, die. he couldn't understand that there was no other way to do things, but since we don't know how his ideal came to be (seriously, Asagiri? nothing at all besides a couple vague suggestions?) we can't exactly push this point much (pages 95-101)
LN3 (set between s1e1 and s1e2 - where the Agency are planning Atsushi's entrance exam)
has what can only be described as a panic attack at the mention of a bomb threat (pages 4 and 5)
starts describing increasingly dark and oddly specific methods of torture to use on Dazai, whilst panicking and trying to attack something that isn't there (pages 16 and 17)
Kunikida and Katai's Brilliant Days (set around s1e6 - first part of azure messenger arc, but by this point Kunikida had not watched Sasaki and Rokuzou die)
sounds terrified at the thought of being called useless (page 5)
anyway that's all i got for now, will update if i think of anything else

Ryuunosuke Akutagawa (self aware)
Self-Aware! Akutagawa Ryunosuke x GN! Reader
Tumblr media
Warning: Yandere. Hints of stalking. OOC. Spoilers for "Dazai Osamu and Dark Era", "Dazai Osamu's entrance exam", Port Mafia arc, The Guild arc, Akutagawa's past. Menthions of mutilation. English is my second language.
Becoming self-aware
🧥 Ryunosuke Akutagawa was a Black-Fanged Hellhound. He is ready to commit heinous crimes for Port Mafia sake.
🧥 Ryunosuke Akutagawa was Ability User of Destruction and Disaster. Rashomon will tear anything and anyone by his command.
🧥 Ryunosuke Akutagawa is an Apostle of Calamity and Despair. He will earn Dazai's approval, no matter what.
🧥 Ryunosuke Akutagawa isn't real. The moment, he realized it, felt like Rashomon sank its fangs in its Master's soul, shredding every emotion he ever had.
🧥 But, the worst thing was, that his reasons for living was shredded alongside his emotions.
🧥 Akutagawa is strong. He trained to be that stronger. But, was his strength a result of his training? Or, he was created to be that strong? And, no matter what, he won't be stronger or weaker than his current level?
🧥 Akutagawa is loyal to Port Mafia. But, has his actions ever benefit Port Mafia? Or, no matter what he did, Port Mafia will exist, and his missions will end in success, even if he stayed in one please, without weapons and Rashomon?
🧥 Akutagawa was seeking Dazai's approval. But... Was he even created to be someone, who Dazai will accept? Or it was his destiny, to be a failure in Dazai's eyes?
🧥 Was Dazai-san even real?;
🧥 Akutagawa was on edge. He wanted answers, he wanted stability. He wanted to tear someone apart.
🧥 But he won't disobey Boss's orders. Mori orders them to find any information they can find.
🧥 Mori was real. Akutagawa choose to follow that order. Akutagawa knew, that, if he refused, it will make a difference.
🧥 Higuichi and Akutagawa were patrolling Yokohama together. That's how they saw The Guild's liner. And Guild leader, talking about not being real with old man with white beard.
🧥 Others also brought news. About Rats, Government, Hunting Dogs. And ADA. They were real. They also could do anything. And it will make a difference.
🧥 The difference wasn't big. At least, it was something.
🧥 And then, one day, he feels an entity's gaze on him.
______
Looking
Observing
It looked at them, like they were circus animals.
It was weak.
It was hiding far away from them.
Akutagawa spent hours, trying to tear through space. Trying to bring It to them. Trying to get to It.
For hours Rashomon's maw destroyed anything, that was on its way. For hours Rashomon's claws tear through walls and pavement.
And there was Gin.
His sister was acting strange.
Every morning, after waking up, she was writing pages and pages in notebook.
She doesn't show them to Akutagawa.
Only ones he saw one of the pages.
"How their day was"
One time, Akutagawa met Dazai during one of his countless tries to get to the Entity. To tear its throat!
Akutagawa's voice was firm.
"Should I make them suffer?"
Dazai's answer was emotionless.
"You had to get in line."
Was it a blessing? An order? Akutagawa will honor it nevertheless.
But one day, time reset.
And he, once again, was a sixteen-year-old boy, who killed Mimic's solder
And made Dazai-san angry.
_______
When they start feeling your presence
🧥 When Dazai-san pointed a gun on Akutagawa, he was ready. He was ready to use Rashomon as a shield. By his own free will.
🧥 But he couldn't.
🧥 He couldn't use it as he wants.
🧥 Only after the shot he finally managed to create a shield.
🧥 Did It mess with his ability? How dare it weak coward do something to him?
🧥 It will pay...
🧥 But why Dazai-san was so silent?
🧥 And then came the voice.
_____
"effective" "harsh" "other way"
"Strong" "deserved to [|||||||||||||||||]"
Akutagawa feels a wave of warmth. For one moment, he felt completely safe. Like nothing could ever hurt him again.
'Was it mocking him? Pitting him?'
Akutagawa looked around, trying to find the speaker. But, no one was here.
Was it the one, who was talking?
And Dazai-san looked like he was listening to it.
Akutagawa's voice sounded urgent.
"Where is it? Dazai-san, I can hear it. I am sure, this time, I will tear them apart..."
Dazai raises his hand.
His voice was uncharacteristically soft.
"No. You will wait. You won't seek them. Right now, you will only listen to their voice. Their words. And pay attention to their emotions."
_______
🧥 Dazai left without explaining anything. Akutagawa was left alone.
🧥 It... They left with Dazai.
🧥 Emotions? Words? Voice? The couple of words? Full of pity?
🧥 Or not?
🧥 Akutagawa closed his eyes. Remembering.
🧥 They didn't feel pity. It was... respect?
🧥 Akutagawa can't be sure. He needs to hear more.
_____
🧥 Next time he heard them was during clash with Mimic.
🧥 Still, no full sentences.
"Akutagawa" "strong" "hard-working"
🧥 But, now, Akutagawa can tell for sure, that it was respect.
🧥 Fight with Mimic was the same as previous time. Except one thing.
🧥 When Gide arrived, he didn't pay any attention to Akutagawa or anyone else. He was trying to shoot something invisible.
🧥 Sakunosuke Oda arrived again. He saved Akutagawa again.
🧥 And said something strange. But, Akutagawa didn't think too much about it.
"Hold tight, Blobby! We can't let Gide shoot you!"
🧥 Few days later, time resets again.
🧥 Akutagawa, once again, was trying to kill taxi driver. And again was defeated by Doppo Kunikida.
"Akutagawa [|||||||||||||] was awesome!"
🧥 The Voice didn't mock him. Still, only respect.
🧥 When he deals with the ability user, that controlled numbers, Akutagawa heard quiet
"Deserved."
from the voice.
🧥 And time resets again.
🧥 Akutagawa once again was trying to capture man-tiger.
🧥 And strange Light Blob was floating above man-tiger.
_____
Few days later, Mori Ougai and Fukuzawa Yukichi were discussing the creation of a Union. Union, to find a way to Their Guiding Light's world. To them.
Akutagawa feels conflicted.
Gin seems happy. She mentioned, that she can't wait to meet them.
Dazai-san seems happy. Often, he was talking to the air. Laughing. Joking.
And looking at something with so much warmth and... love?
Dazai-san was asking about the Voice. And his feelings towards them.
Akutagawa was honest.
"They are a simple person. I don't hate them anymore. But, I don't like them either."
Akutagawa just can't put his finger on it. He understands, why they want to get to the real world. But why so many people want to meet them? The Guiding Light?
He gets his answers one day.
_____
🧥 Akutagawa just follows Mori's orders. Gave a message to The Guild. Don't attack anyone.
🧥 Hawthorne and Mitchell were on their guard, but, nevertheless, promise to tell Fitzgerald about union proposition. This time, they were unhsrmed.
🧥 And on his way back to ADA/Port Mafia base, time reset again.
🧥 And he was a forteen-year-old boy from the slums.
_________
He was standing before Dazai-san like all this years ago.
But, he wasn't looking at him.
Right before Dazai-san was standing a figure, made of light. Same light, that Little Light was made of.
And they talked. Akutagawa heard sobs. And a wave of warmth
"poor" "friends" "strength"
"Akutagawa, I respect you. You are powerful. You had to become powerful. For yourself. For your friends. And you are powerful. You don't need anyone's acceptance. The words will never take away your power."
Akutagawa feels, how light figure hugged him.
[In reality, you run your fingers up and down manga page]
A flood of emotions...
Respect. Acceptance. Proud
Akutagawa feels, like he was in presence of the most important human in entire planet. Important for him. For everyone.
He finally got it. Why everyone love you.
Now, he was like them.
He wanted to protect them.
_______
🧥 Dazai-san start training him and Atsushi in working in pair.
🧥 So they can protect Dear Guiding Light.
🧥 Akutagawa was ready to train every minute of his life.
🧥 Making sure, that you are safe.
🧥 You and your happiness became his reason to live on.
And then, one day, the purple moon shined above Yokohama.
_______
When you installed BSD Mayoi Inu Kaikitan
🧥 Akutagawa was first one, who gave you an Awakening materials, so you can have his UR card.
"Akutagawa, I love Leader Skill of your card!"
"Wow! So much damage! Are real Rashomon that powerful?"
"Akutagawa's Detective card are so awesome!"
🧥 Akutagawa gather materials by himself. Now Armory in Port Mafia base are on Max Level.
🧥 Because of his interface, Armory now gave materials for UR card awakening.
🧥 Akutagawa loves 'watching' movies with you and Gin. He and Gin will secretly watch videos you watch.
🧥 Ready to order Rashomon to chew through space to get him on your doorstep.
🧥 Will do anything, to keep smile on your face. To keep you protected. To destroy your enemies.
🧥 Akutagawa is a Black-Fanged Hellhound, Ability User of Destruction and Disaster, Apostle of Calamity and Despair.
🧥And you are his reason to live.
_____
You got another note from BSD Mayoi Inu Kaikitan.
From Akutagawa. With Awakening materials for his Summer card.
And a note.
"[Y/N]. Be careful. I don't want anything happen to you. Please, don't worry about anything. You are under my protection, remember that. Akutagawa Ryunosuke"
You smiled and open one of the Akutagawa cards, petting his chibi.
"I will be careful, I promise, Akutagawa. Thanks for worrying about me."
You didn't notice, that Akutagawa's eyes closed in bliss.

Text
Don’t y’all love it when a popular tiktok creator is analyzing a character and interpreting it so, so wrong, and him and his dumb ass take is spreading.
Like it was one thing for you to be wrong
ITS ANOTHER THING FOR YOU TO BE WRONG AND MAKING OTHER PEOPLE MORE WRONG
If one more person says that Izuku is “underdeveloped” and that he’s “uninterested in all of his other relationships” and that he “has a power imbalance in his relationships with other characters bc they care more about him than he does them” STOP. PLEASE STOP.
A fundamental part of Izuku’s character: He is an UNRELIABLE NARRATOR. Most of his character is, therefore, told through SUBTEXT.
Izuku doesn’t say that he feels ashamed about his feelings for Katsuki.
But he does say that he thinks they’re gross.
Izuku doesn’t say that he thinks that Toga and her feelings aren’t human
But he does say that she is the “perfect counter to this quirk”.
THE LIST COULD GO ON.
Izuku is an unreliable narrator in a third person omniscient story (though sometimes mha acts more like a third person objective story? Anyway). That means that the way we do not understand the story is not through a retelling of what is happening to you, the viewer, unreliably—instead it is not telling you the full extent of his character and his thoughts.
To say “izuocha’s relationship is underdeveloped because it’s one sided” is NOT the same as saying “bkdk’s relationship is underdeveloped because it’s one sided”.
Izuku has always been obsessed with Katsuki. At some point the rhetoric being passed around was that it was Katsuki who was underdeveloped and uninterested in the dynamic. Now that rhetoric has been reversed since we’ve seen so much of Katsuki’s POV.
Ochako has always been obsessed with Izuku, NEVER THE OTHER WAY AROUND. In fact, Ochako’s arc even surrounded letting go of those feelings… as literally said in the text. Because that is a textual statement that she makes.
Izuku does not understand how or what Ochako loves in anybody, especially him. She loves a unique sense of personhood, which Izuku has always carried, and of which she saw in the entrance exam.
Izuku does not know how to view things he deems as “girly”, and Ochako very personally CANT be in a relationship with someone that she has realized is very repressed. Her friendships turn from friends to fascination very quickly, into her heroic form. (Think her few moments with Katsuki in that extra, or how disinterested she became of Izuku as she saw him run away from help, and not know how to respond to an apology. Or, hell, how much more interested she became when Himiko was honest with her feelings in their second real confrontation. She even says that she “admires how she can love so freely, and say it with her whole chest”)
LIKE ALL OF THESE THINGS. THIS IS WHY IZUOCHA ISNT DEVELOPED. That’s a purposeful choice in genius writing, at least in my opinion.
Bkdk is a result of Izuku being uninterested in acknowledging said feelings, and this is shown to be different because of the amount of times he has had that imply a deeper emotion or thought that we are not told. Think black whip, controlling your heart solely surrounding katsuki, “my feelings are gross”, the ear piercing scream when katsuki was kidnapped and the “this was a total loss” line, relaxing into katsuki’s arms after the apology, only coming home because of Katsuki, comparing romantic feelings toga had for him and admiration to ALLMIGHT and not katsuki who was “actually in his life”, I COULD GO ON FOR HOURS.
This is absolutely NOT underdeveloped, this is called SHOW NOT TELL. Horikoshi is so purposeful in what he shows vs what he tells. He tells you that ochako and toga are the same, he tells you that katsuki is worried about Izuku, he tells you that katsuki is there to step in when deku can’t handle it on his own, he tells you that ochako has a crush on Izuku, and he tells you that Katsuki is Izuku’s “closest person”.
But he also SHOWS YOU SO MUCH MORE. Unreliable narration is such a key part of Izuku and his character. Izuku doesn’t understand Izuku as much as the audience doesn’t understand him. It’s why I genuinely think most interpretations of his character are wrong, because you really can’t take him at his word. It’s the same reason no one understood katsuki for the longest time, he was in the same circumstances of a character who is only showed to you, not told.
I know i named so many god damn references so if anyone is curious as to what specifically I’m talking about with what, I’ll gladly show what scene I’m referring to. Apparently I can’t remember a damn thing but this manga anyway.
