It’s 04:35 in Amsterdam and I’m way jet lagged but the rage is real tonight. I don’t get how every other character got such a more realistic and realistic exit in the OC universe except for Jay.

Swearing Jar || Upstead x daughter
Tumblr media
Summary: Sophia is Hailey's and Jay's teenage daughter. She deffends Makayla from some bullys, now she has to pay the price.
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly erased my other blog 🫠
This was the first fic I dared to post, I'm so glad I found it!
"Yeah, get out of here, you fucking asshole!"
Everyone at Molly's stood silent when they heard the screeming from outside the bar. The voice of the girl was unmistakable, everyone knew who she was. Hailey and Jay shared a concerned look.
"And don't you dare to even look at her again, you moron!"
It was defenitely Sophia. No doubt.
Hailey and Jay stood up in a hurry to go outside, followed by Adam and Kim, naturally Makayla was with her. From the other side of the bar, a concerned Severide also rushed to help.
"Or other wise you'll have to respond to me, you jerk! And I won't be any gentile!"
That last phrase made Hailey's and Jay's blood run cold. Everything happened so fast. Before they could reach the entrance door, it opened. Will Halstead was leading a furious Sophia and a crying Mckayla inside of the bar. Once the three of them were inside, and before the door closed, Lydia pocked her head out and yelled her last insult.
"Fucker!"
-"Sophia, please! That's enough!" Will took her from the shoulders and turned her inside of the bar.
Molly's was closed to the public that day, there was a party to celebrate Violet's and Gallo's engagement. So Sophia and Mckayla were able to be there along with their parents and friends. The place was full of firefighters, detectives and some doctors from The Med.
All of the guests were shocked looking at the girls, mostly looking at Sophia. They knew she was an impulsive girl, but their faces were showing confusion and concern.
Kim and Adam immediatly ran to hug their daughter. When Sophia raised her head she saw Hailey, Jay and Severaid in front of her, but also Platt, Hermann and Cruz had arrived to the scene. They were in a defensive position, ready to go out to defend the girls. Will raised his hands, saying that everything was ok.
Hailey walked to Sophia, Jay behind his wife. Both of them looking at their daughter straight to the eyes, asking for an explanation with a simple sight.
"-Mom, they were bullying her, ok? They were saying bad things to her and I wasn't going to let them! Not anymore!".
Jay was about to say something, when Kim interrupted without taking her eyes off Makayla.
"-Bullying? Who was bullying her?"
-"Some shitheads from school" -Sophia said right away.
-"Language!" Jay, Hailey and Will said unison, thought their first instinct was to laught.
Everyone at the bar was paying attention to the scene and they couldn't help to laugh a bit. Even Hank Voight smirked a little bit at the girl's reaction. That's when Sophia realized that this wasn't a private conversation.
"-Sorry", she muttered. "Look, I was trying to...protect her..."
-"At least she didn't hit anybody this time" -Mak said in a funny tone. She was feeling better now, surrounded by her loved ones.
-"Yes, because I happened to appear before she did something ~stupid". -Will completed Makayla's tought, which made her laugh.
-"That happened once and it was an accident. I thought we were over it?"
Jay rolled his eyes at her daughter's argument. "Ok. Let's leave this in here for now. We should go back to the party". -He said realizing the attention they were drawing.
-"Yeah, we should go back" Adam reafirmed, looking around.
Hailey hugged her daughter's shoulder and kissed her head, she couldn't deny she was proud of her daughter's grit.
Everyone went back to their seats. When Sophia passed by Severide, he strocked her head as a symbol of affection. He and Stella were very fond of her. Later that day, when Stella arrived from her shift, Kelly told her what happened with the girls and she bursted into laughs: "That girl has been a sassy pants since she was in diappers".
The party continued normally. Everybody seemed happy, having fun. Makayla was dancing and sharing laughts, as if nothing had happened before. Kim and Adam where isolated on a table having a serius conversation, those bully boys were not going to have it easy.
Sophia was seating between her parents at the same table as Will, Severaid and Stella. On the next table Voight, Platt and Mouch were part of the same conversation. Sophia told them how the boys were harrassing Makayla and how she felt the urge to defend her to make it stop. Hank suggested she had the gut to be a cop or maybe even a lawyer, Jay discarded both ideas. Trudy finished the conversation on the matter by saying "You've always been my favorite Halstead".
-"I'm a little bit hungry. Can I go get some pizza?"
-"Sure. Go get a slice and bring some more to me too. I can descount the favor from your new debt to the swearing jar" - Jay said teasing his daughter and then stood up to let her out. Sophia just rolled her eyes. He gave her a mocking smile.
Kim approached to the table in that exact moment, looking for Sophia.
-"Hey, Soph. I just wanted to thank you...I know this is not the first time that you stand for Mack like this, she has told us, so... just thank you. You've been a lot of help for her".
Sophia shrugged in shyness "She's my best friend", she stated reffering that the obvios thing to do was to stand for her friend, sister.
Hailey and Jay had their eyes on their daughter, they couldn't stop looking at her with a proud smile on their faces. The atmosphere was calm and full of love, when Will interrupted the feeling: "You still have to pay the swearing jar, you won't get rid of it".
Sophia abruptly pointed to Makayla and said as a joke: "You owe me like 10 dollars for this".
-"Are you kidding me?" -Jay stared- "You owe the jar like 50 dollars, kiddo".
-"Are you serius!?"
-"Yeah, I'm with your dad in this" -Hailey continued -"Those were really bad prohibited words, sweetie".
-"Yeah, and I only used them for a good reason".
-"Bad words are bad words, and you must follow the swearing jar law". Her father said raising an eyebrow and proceeded to drink from his beer.
Sophia crossed her arms and continued the funny argument "Really? How many criminals have you handcuff by talking to them politely?"
-"She's got a good point" -Trudy said.
-"I'm with her at this" -Voight followed.
They all laught at the silly debate. Those around who listened to the conversation shared some giggles, also because the family dynamic was adorable.
-"All right" -Hailey stood up- "If mom doesn't get the pizza, you two are going to starve, so excuse me".
Father and daughter sat down again, Jay hugging her by the shoulder "I love you, kiddo. I love you so much. You're still paying, though".
Sylvie approach to the table with a bright smile: "That won't be a problem. We all saw what you did, so Violet, Blake, Ritter and I collected some cash for you. Here you have".
-"Geez, thanks!"
-"Pay the jar, and don't you dare to curse ever again, or you'll leave us broke". -Violet yelled from her spot, next to Blake.
-"Straight to the jar" Severaid and Stella threatened.
Hailey came back to the table giving one slice of pizza to her daughter and another one for Jay: "This girl and her mouth...she's going to make us rich, I tell you".

Hi!!!
I've been watching the last two seasons of PD at the same time that were aired. But the previous seasons, I watched in less than a month. So, I was very into the characters and not so much in what happened around the show and the actors/actress (there's a few Upstead moments that I would have cut off my left arm for watching them at the same time with the fandom).
Your point of view of the show, and your fics are so clever and creative, that I would like to know your opinion about the question that bothers me.
What is the reason why there's not a real friendship between the female characters?
Not with Erin and Kim. Not with Kim and Hailey.
The few episodes with Vanessa and Hailey have more love and care, than the 7 seasons with Kim and Hailey.
Is it because of the script? The nature of the show? The imperative drama?
Hailey never had a real confident besides Jay, and Kim...she even told anyone about her engagement? (and honestly, I won't be continuing with the show after Tracy's departure, so I won't see if the new member will be Kim's friend).
Because Tracy and Marianna seem to have a good relationship outside the job.
Fire and Med do a better job with women and sisterhood.
Thank you for your time reading this and for the answer.
Happy weekend. I'm seeding the same question to others blogs, to know more opinions.
Hi there!
Ooooooooof, there's a lot to unpack here.
The female dynamics in PD have been so lackluster and so poorly done, it's been one of my biggest issues with the series as a whole. Female dynamics and friendships and relationships are just so important and the fact that they've clearly not even tried to figure out how to make something work is incredibly disappointing.
I do think the nature of the show has something to do with it, but I don't think it's an excuse for them to not try. This is never going to be the type of the show that explores relationships of any kind super in-depth, but I don't think that means it can't be there, even if in a small way.
It's not like it's something that has to be so in-your-face either. A few throw-a-way lines here and there about Kim & Hailey having a girls' night. Letting them confide in each other about life, instead of letting them suffer through trauma alone - which is what this show seems to prefer.
I think this show kind of overall fails at exploring relationships in-depth to begin with - relationships of any kind. We only see glimpses, and I know it's a procedural with cases taking the forefront, but I do think it's something that could be there, and could make the show stronger. Especially with the whole 'this unit is a family' bullshit they try to make me believe, but it's anything but believable when none of them even speak to each other outside work. They barely speak to one another at work.
Also, the character central episodes need to be ABOLISHED because that's one of the reasons this show is sinking faster than the Titanic and dynamics between characters can't be explored properly.
This got long. Apologizes. I'm going to shut up now.

The way Gwen worded her statement about Hailey coming out to a healthier and better side for her makes it sound like Hailey will thing her relationship with Jay was unhealthy and one of the worst things that happened to her when ultimately it was one of the best things. I just don’t understand why they are dragging out jays character like this when Jesse isn’t there to defend it. Like they should have either written him off by going to the academy or if they really wanted to go down this divorce and move on route then they should have done it either end of last season or when Jay left in 10x3 bc the dragging it out is not only making me pissed but honestly I would be annoyed as a regular viewer who has to watch this get dragged on for yet another season.
Yeah, that was baffling to me too. Healthier and better side could mean absolutely anything. While I recognize that there’s a worst case scenario in that, I’m trying to focus on the fact that there are some positive scenarios in it too. And I don’t get why they’ve opted to drag it out either. Maybe they dragged it out knowing there was a happy ending at the end of the road, or maybe they dragged it out knowing they could string us along long enough to keep us engaged. But you have a point in that the average viewer, upstead fan or not is likely to have become confused and annoyed by this prolonged storyline. They’re not serving upstead fans, they’re certainly not serving the other ship’s fans, and it’s not like it’s some groundbreakingly intriguing storyline for someone who’s indifferent, so what reason do they have for all of it? I guess we’ll have to see, but I’m not holding my breath on getting any actual or satisfying answers.

Allow me to blanket this statement with:
I AM SO HAPPY FOR BURZEK LIKE ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? HE KEPT HER RING??? THEY'RE FINALLY GETTING THEIR HAPPILY EVER AFTER AS A FAMILY????
That being said,
I will die on the Upstead hill, so it takes a lot for me to "publically" support Burzek because I almost feel like it takes away from Upstead. However, I have pretty much always liked Burzek
It. Did. Not. Have. To. Be. This. Way. and I cannot stress that enough. Upstead did NOT have to get divorced for Burzek to get engaged. And, by extension, Burzek did not have to break up for Upstead to get married. I don't know why the hell Gwen is pushing this narrative. It's pushing fans apart, and views are plummeting. She keeps digging herself a deeper and deeper hole, and I don't get it. I could go on and on about it, and I have, but this is just my two cents at the moment that Upstead and Burzek should not be competitors

It’s kind of crazy to think about a showrunner flat out saying in an interview that there are no plans for an upstead reunion before Hailey’s departure. And an interview after the very first episode of the season no less. That’s a pretty big fanbase she pissed off and pretty much told to not even bother watching the rest of the season because you’re not going to get the outcome you want. It’s also crazy for me to think that someone above her doesn’t hear about what she said and get pretty pissed off by it. Between what you saw on screen and the interview, do you believe Gwen’s words, that there will be no reunion for them? She’s full of contradictions/lies but at the same time it was said so definitively.
I'm always going to be ... less inclined to take anything Gwen says at face value. Like you and others have said, she's a bit of a walking-talking contradiction.
But you know what. I'd rather take her at her word, and bow out now before I watch her maybe fuck up Hailey like she did Jay, and be surprised later down the line that this was all a lie; than stick around for her dangling carrot of hope like she did to us in season 10.
If it's a lie, it's a bit dangerous game to play in terms of fan engagement on social media. Maybe even in the media at large. But in terms of viewership, though, I doubt it will do much.
But all that being said. I like to look at the other people involved over Gwen. And Jesse's now deleted response to a question @imjustwritingg asked him on Twitter about 'trusting the process'...I'm thinking* this might be the one time it's fairly safe to take her at her word.
*how tired are we of this phrase 🙄

Wtf were those season finales. No like seriously
Will resigned but ultimately gets a happy ending with Natalie (see pd writer it’s not that hard to write a character and their relationship with respect and that’s true to their character.) Good for him 🫶
Mouch is dead (who knows if Trudy knows but we all know how the writers are. So she’ll probably just get a text letting her know 😒🥺)
Bre*tsy got engaged and a happy fucking ending (of all people 🤬)
Adam gets shot (should’ve been vo*ght)
Burzek got an ambulance scene (even though upstead could’ve had like 2 last season and 1 in season 7 but whatever 😔😒)
And then the fucking season ends with vo*ght drinking in a bar while Adam’s in the hospital (still should’ve been vo*ght in there)
They only good thing about this season finale (other than it’s over) is that Kev wasn’t the one terribly injured or killed off but then also even that is kind like ehhh… with the ending they gave him
And well I don’t have much to say about Hailey for the simple fact that she’s now getting treated like a side character and not the main character she is. (I seriously need Tracy to free me and herself from this shit show. Like please I’m begging you 🙏😫)
This is the most perfect summary of the shit show that was One Chicago finale night.

Do you think they will get Hailey and Jay back together now that Tracy is leaving?
What are your wishes or hopes for Adam, Kim, Kevin and Makayla in the upcoming season?
I hope so. I do think they will, especially as the only reason they had upstead go through the uncertainty of the relationship last season was to give Hailey more room in her future storylines but with her leaving, that's no longer a consideration.
I suppose it always goes down to how they decide to have her exit, but I can't see them going for an unhappy exit, especially when JLS would definitely be willing to come back for a cameo.
Now! For what my wishes are:
I need to first mention that my wish for my burzekwater is that they get their detective badges Especially now we'll be losing Hailey.
For Burzek just in general first: I want that hospital scene, I want Kim mother henning Adam because she is not doing well at all being on this side of things. I want an ily - a true parallel to Kim's first shooting, with also a cute scene with Mack to parallel her second shooting. I want them to continue to be the amazing couple they are and give us those small domestic moments so i can squeal over them being together (although I say that like I do smile stupidly to myself whenever they interact in a very neutral way now they're together because they're fucking together!) In my possibly asking for too much dream wishes is for a new burzek engagement (with Kim instigating it in some way at least).
For Adam: I want him to formally adopt Mack too, be the legal dad in every sense of the word.
I want to see him struggle with the shooting, not only because shootings are traumatic but also because it was done by a kid - and I want to see Kim help him through this. I also want him to not shut down when dealing with the trauma. And I'd like the trauma to ebb and flow throughout the season. Possibly have Adam be a bit disillusioned to everything because he tried so hard and he couldn't save the kid.
I could see him very much becoming go to work, get what needs to be done and that's it, just following routine and go home - with home being the one place he's really thriving in, or even him questioning his place in the force. I very much wish that his main arc for this season is very much revolving around the shooting.
For Kim: I very much want to see her helping Adam through things, especially with her learned experiences. But I also don't want them to forget her own trauma, and that how almost losing the love of her life after finally letting him in would really emotionally wreck her. I think a lot of this will be mitigated by her helping him, but I still hope we see the effects.
Saying all that, I also really want one of her main arcs for this season to be professional strides for her - without her getting injured or MORE trauma dumped on her. Especially with this being Hailey's last season. I want her helping Adam to be an important arc for her as well, obviously, but her individual one I really want to see her being that awesome cop.
For Kevin: Similarly, I'd love to see the same thing in Kevin's arcs. I very much want to see more scenes with him and Torres as i dig them working together. I'd also love to see more of his father, because I think the arc of Kev rebuilding a relationship with him is such an important and interesting one.
I feel like a broken record saying this, but ROMANCE! I want to see a proper romance for him. A mature one, not build on lies or is a position of conflict in his life. Just a very nice relationship that builds up Kev, instead of causing more strife in his life.
I'd also like to see him potentially helping Adam with his trauma, especially if Adam is questioning his position in the force, I'd love to see Kev helping with that side of things.
For Mack: Just more cute family scenes. An adoption by Adam. Her being like ew at her parents kissing. Her being sweet to an injured Adam. Ending the season learning she's going to be a big sister because I'm pregnant!Kim trash.
Thank you for asking!!! This was very fun to answer. I'm half certain I've forgotten like half a dozen things because honestly my wish list is SO SO long and I've had many months of thinking and brain storming what I want, so don't be surprised if I add to this.

I really need people to take about 7 chill pills when it comes to Chicago P.D. and my coverage of it. You dont like it? Do us both a favor and don't read instead of reading and then sending me messages about how bad a writer I am and how much you hate me. This is a free country! No one's forcing you to read! Hate me in silence! Or at least don't tag me or subtweet where I don't have to see.
Also, re: the Burzek and Upstead of it all, I don't hate any couple or any character. Well, okay, I greatly dislike Voight but I have never denied that. I have never said I dislike any couple, or have trashed any character or couple. I've tried to analyze character motivations and sure, biases come to play in that. Feel free to call me out on those and if you aren't an asshole, I might even engage in a convo about it. I actually mostly enjoy being told I'm wrong, it's the lawyer in me.
But I never said I hated any couple or character. You guys made that up. I write about what's on screen when it's on screen, and that's what I will continue to do. And no, I'm not gonna stop covering the show.

Matching rings and matching names
Tumblr media
Summary - ‘Do you wish I’d done it properly?’ he asked hesitantly.
‘Done what properly?’
‘The proposal. If I’d have done it properly with a ring?’
Post proposal, Hailey and Jay have a discussion about rings.
Notes - Happy Valentine’s Day! Thought it was the perfect time for some Upstead fluff, I hope you enjoy! AO3 Link
The air was cooling against their drying skin as Jay and Hailey laid tangled together atop her bed. The blinds into the room were open, the only light coming from the outside casting shadows across the bed. She was curled into Jay’s side, her fingertips running patterns across his chest, his hand tight around her back, his other one resting under his head as he gazed up at the ceiling.
‘Hails’, he said softly, his quiet voice breaking through the peaceful silence.
‘Hmm’, Hailey made the noise in response but didn’t slow her movements along his skin.
‘Do you wish I’d done it properly?’ he asked hesitantly.
‘Done what properly? That felt pretty proper to me’, she said with a light giggle, her laugh fanning lightly against his chest.
‘The proposal. If I’d have done it properly, with a ring?’ Her hand stilled at this and he brought his own down from behind his head to hold it, gently rubbing his thumb across her empty ring finger.
‘I don’t need a ring Jay. I just need you.’ She spoke quietly but firmly. ‘You already proposed a second time after I did, and you got down on one knee. It was a proper proposal.’ Jay hummed in response but Hailey could still feel him rubbing his thumb against her finger. She pushed herself up slightly so she could look at him. ‘It was perfect Jay. I promise. I don’t need a ring,’ she smiled, which he returned but she could still see that it didn’t quite meet his eyes. She knew the difference between when he was smiling from his heart and when he was just putting one on in an attempt to appease others. ‘Talk to me Jay,’ she whispered and patted his chest lightly in an attempt to focus him, ‘what’s brought this on?’
‘I just want-’ he started to say but stopped himself before starting again after taking a breath. ‘You’re life hasn’t been easy Hailey, and I know you don’t like talking about it,’ he added quickly knowing that Hailey would be likely to interrupt him. He had known the woman lying in his arms long enough to know that. ‘But you said it yourself, you want to have some normalcy in your life. And normalcy is an engagement ring and a wedding and everything that comes along with it. And I don’t want you to miss out on that stuff.’
‘But what if I don’t want that stuff,’ Hailey responded.
‘I just want to make sure you don’t want it because you don’t want it, not because you think you shouldn’t,’ he said quietly, tightening his grip on her hand. To most people, what Jay was saying would make no sense at all but Hailey understood perfectly.
She had never been one to follow tradition, the regular way of life. Rather preferring to do her own thing and forge her own path. But sometimes it was to her own detriment. She remembered telling Jay the story of her homecoming Junior year.
She had been asked to go by a boy in her class but had adamantly turned it down. She told herself it was because a dress was likely to show off her arms and the bruises that were usually concealed by her long sleeves. That and the fact that Homecoming was just stupid anyway. But when the night came and she stayed at home, listening to her Dad’s shouts echoing around the house, she realised she had wanted to be there. She would have been able to be a normal teenager for the night. She could have found a dress with sleeves, or put a jacket or a shawl on, no one would have noticed anything wrong. She had somehow persuaded herself that she didn’t want to go, because other girls, girls she thought she was like, also didn’t want to. That Homecoming was only for the popular girls, the airheads, not someone as down to earth as Hailey Anne Upton. Girls like her didn’t go to Homecoming, wear a pretty dress and dance awkwardly with a boy. They just didn’t.
The night she told Jay that story had been the same night they had danced in the kitchen for the first time. He had asked her to dance a few times before but she had always shook her head and given an excuse: she was cooking, she couldn’t dance, it was silly. But this time she let him take her in his arms and sway gently. She suddenly realised what she had missed out on all those other times. Because she thought Hailey Upton shouldn’t want to dance. But in reality, she did. And that night swaying slowly in her kitchen, in the arms of the man she loved, she realised it was okay to want things that perhaps didn’t fit with the persona she presented.
The same had happened the first time Jay bought her flowers. She had made a quip that he must be apologising for something but he had just said he thought they were pretty and they reminded him of her. They had sat proudly on her coffee table until their colours were dull and the petals lifeless, but she had kept one of the flowers, pressed tightly in between the pages of one of her books. She had thought it was soft when girls had kept flowers from boys, had rolled her eyes everytime it was shown in a movie or written in one of the books that she borrowed from the library as a teen, but every time she opened the book and saw the dried petals, it brought a smile to her face. And now when Jay buys her flowers, she just says thank you with a smile.
Hailey smiled at Jay, ‘thank you,’ she whispered and resumed her movements across his bare chest. Her fingers dancing lightly across the skin.
‘For what?’
‘For always checking in, for being there for me, for understanding that sometimes my head doesn’t always want the same as my heart’ she spoke softly, trying to get her feelings out coherently. ‘But I am serious, I don’t want a ring. I want a marriage. I want you and me and our life together, a diamond on my finger isn’t going to change that’.
‘Compromise?’ Jay offered.
‘What did you have in mind?’ She grinned and rested her head atop her hand so she could continue to look at him, his green eyes glistening as he smiled down at her.
‘No engagement ring but we get matching wedding bands?’ Hailey contemplated for a moment, dramatically making thoughtful noises before nodding with a smile.
‘I like that idea,’ she said.
‘You do?’
‘I like the idea of people knowing you’re mine,’ she laughed, ‘but in all seriousness, I like that idea. That we would match.’
‘Perfect,’ he leant down to press a soft kiss to her forehead, letting his lips linger a little longer than normal.
‘Not big gaudy things though, practical ones,’ she added and Jay nodded in response.
‘Practical ones it is.’
‘We could get them engraved,’ Hailey suggested quietly, half thinking Jay wouldn’t hear.
‘Really?’ He asked with a smile.
‘Mhmm’, she moved to rest her head back into the crook of his neck. ‘Just for us’ she added.
‘Just for us,’ he echoed as he brought one of his hands up to nestle in her hair. ‘And if you ever change your mind, I’ll take you straight down to the jewellers and get you a ring right there and then,’ he said with a smile.
‘I know you would. And that’s why I love you Jay,’ she planted a gentle kiss to his chest as she felt his arms tighten around him.
‘I love you too’, he whispered as the pair drifted back into a comfortable silence, the promise of a future together lingering in the air.
‘Would you mind if I took your name?’ Hailey said softly. ‘After we’re married I mean’.
‘Wouldn’t both of us being Halstead at work be confusing?’ Jay laughed, Hailey felt his chest rise and fall in time with the laughter. ‘Of course I wouldn’t mind Hailey, I’d love it.’
‘I would stay Upton at work, it would be too confusing otherwise but in our everyday life. Like I said earlier, we would match. And it’s a bit of normalcy.’
‘Hailey Halstead,’ Jay murmured. ‘That sounds pretty perfect to me.’
‘You’re supposed to share the name of the people that love you. And you love me more than anyone else ever has.’
‘Hailey Halstead it is,’ he kissed her forehead and felt her melt further into him. ‘Mr and Mrs Halstead.’
‘Now that makes me sound old,’ she giggled. ‘But Hailey Halstead, that I like the sound of’.
‘Then as soon as we tie the knot and get those matching rings, we will go to the courthouse and get matching names as well,’ he chuckled softly.
‘Thank you,’ she said as she nuzzled her face further into his neck.
‘For?’ he asked.
‘For loving me so much you’re letting me have the chance of normalcy, of having the same last name as my husband’.
‘Your husband’.
‘My husband. At least you will be soon’.

After that JLS interview, do you think it’s best to just move on from Upstead? Do you think it’s most likely over for them now?
I mean, to each their own but this hasn't changed my approach at all. I'm only going to watch episode 16 (for Jesse) and then I'll check in at the end of the season to see if I want to re-engage depending on how they handle Hailey and Jay's stories. I still hold onto hope that he could do a guest appearance and they can salvage this, even if that's in vain.

Truly at a loss for words and I'm not usually one to engage in conspiracies, but this all just feels spiteful. There was no need to go down this road, to destroy ten years of Jay Halstead and five years of Upstead and all the hard work of Tracy and Jesse respectively.
And her justifications in the interviews are nothing but ridiculous and outright lies..
I am right there with you. There was no need for this, yet this is the route they have chosen. I think Gwen's choices as a showrunner are lazy and very mediocre storytelling. It goes to show how inadequate she actually is at all of this.

What do you think of Gwen basically calling Upstead's relationship a trauma response that was sort of destined to end?
okay. look. i really like upstead. i wanted them to work out, i really did. but i called this as soon as they got engaged.
do i think their entire relationship could be called a trauma response? absolutely not. do i think there was an element of trauma response to their engagement/marriage? absolutely yes.
there is no doubt in my mind that they genuinely loved each other before they ever even became an official couple, but hailey's proposal came out of a traumatic experience that she never properly dealt with. she was spiraling during their entire "engagement" and even though the situation itself was eventually resolved, the trauma wasn't. they got married right after the "conclusion" of the traumatic experience and both continued to experience different traumas after that without EVER dealing with it. jay went to a veteran's group around the end of season 4 and went to a few mandated therapy appointments in season 5, and then never again. hailey has never had any sort of therapy in her entire life as far as we know considering the way her past has been portrayed
i firmly believe that they got engaged/married too quickly - yes they loved each other before they were together but there is a difference in dynamic when they're finally in a relationship
keep in mind though that none of this means that this storyline is in character for jay (it isn't) or that their marriage was destined to end, but so long as they continued to not deal with their respective and shared trauma, then that's not a relationship that's sustainable. i think gwen is a clown and that it's a stretch, but there is an underlying layer of truth to it

Going of the answer you just gave in your last ask.
You know what I find funny is the fact that some burzek fans will say that s9 was the upstead show or was a fan service but I’m sitting here confused like did we watch the same season.
Cause the first half of season 9 yes has it’s good upstead moments (them getting engaged, moving in together) but other than that the first half (e4-9. You could even go as far back to say e1) is kinda filled with angst. I can guarantee that no upstead fan wanted that.
Now the second half (e10-22) was like playing hide and seek 😂 you had to sometimes really search for them in episodes.
And even with their centric episodes those were more focused on the case then it was on them as a couple and as individuals.
But then you’ll turn around an episode after and have Kim & Adam centrics back to back that focuses on them as a family and their home life. I just find it all so interesting 🤔🤷‍♀️
I...probably could type an essay here but I'm gonna try to condense my thoughts. And I don't want this to turn into a ship vs. ship thing, because I think at the end of the day that's not really the issue - it's the writing and storytelling.
I quite enjoyed the first half of season 9. It was very strong, very well written, very well strung together. Sure, it was angsty, but it's a procedural drama that's super dark and I want to see that angst and expect it - I want to see them overcome these things and be able to live and breathe for a moment before the next disaster strikes, though.
(Giving these characters a relief post-angst and trauma is another issue entirely that the show doesn't seem to comprehend for any character, but I digress.)
Season 9b....was a disaster to put it lightly. I think the Kim/Adam centric back-half was a problem absolutely - I think we should have seen Jay, Hailey & Kevin's lives thrown into the mix in this back-half. But, the biggest thing that I notice is that 9b is when things seemed to fall apart in a storytelling capacity, and that is exactly when Gwen took the helm as show-runner.
I will end this answer with saying: I hate the character central episodes and I need them to be abolished immediately.

When Upstead got engaged in 9x01, did you ever imagine they’d be married as early as 9x09?
Not at all. I was anticipating their wedding/marriage being a season finale thing, so I was ecstatic to get it as early as 9x09. And because we got it so early I was hoping that would mean the rest of the season would serve us loads of married moments, but the writers don’t know how to seize prime opportunities. That’s a whole other conversation though😒

Sorry just in my upstead feelings…
And also a little mad….
We were seriously robbed in 9B. There were so many opportunities in 9x13 and 9x22 (and other eps) for more but I feel like Jesse and Tracy were just forced to go and act the crap out of the upstead crumbs they were given.
We had so many hopes and dreams for Hailey, Jay and upstead development in season 10 and now they are all dashed.
Upstead kept me engaged in the series and in other ships. I like burzek. Granted they are not my top ship but I was happily interested them while waiting for upstead moments. Same with the other characters (except the escano case that was just boring AF). Escano would have been an awesome one episode arc maybe two but that’s it! Carmela ended up getting more screentime than the main characters in 9B! The fact that we even have to start the season with a mention of this case is so stupid.
Now we have to look for crumbs and hang onto moments with this looming in the distance. And if it is really 3 eps it is around the corner…so close.
Hailey looked worried in every promo pic. Also if there is an episode lead in recap where they flash back to the scene in 9x09 where Jay tells Voight they always pay for the decisions he makes you will find me on the floor.
I am just sad for us.
