Exciting ||Jay Halstead x Daughter and reader
Jay has to take his daughter to work for the first time and he’s not excited about it.
For the one that voted Jay x daughter on the poll (this is not a Christmas story though)
Jay wasn’t comfortable with the idea of taking his 4 years old daughter to work, but seemed like luck was not on his side. The girl was on vacation, Y/N was on a work trip, the nanny got sick, Will was on shift and the little girl’s grandparent’s couldn’t take care of her all day long, so he had no choice. He called Voight, who with his raspy voice and without any problem said “Bring her.”
He sighed, “Ok, baby girl. You are coming to work with me today” He notified his little daughter who was sitting with her short legs hanging from the couch.
“To the police station?” Her eyes were shining bright out of excitement.
“Yea”, her dad chuckled. “Mommy will pick you up later, when she comes back home from her trip, ok?”
“Okay. I am excited!” Excited was the last feeling she learned in school and from then on she would use it for everything.
“I am excited too”, he lied, he was more nervous than anything. “Go get your backpack”, he ordered and when she was gone he muttered to himself, “I’m already running late”
It wasn’t common to take one’s son or daughter to the bullpen, but is wasn’t so strange either. Voight and Al had done it in the past with their kids; Burgess and Adam had done it with Malayla too, even Kevin had to take his little sister from time to time. This was the family Hank talked about.
Jay went upstairs with a small pink and shinny backpack with unicorn form on his arm, making a funny contrast with the gun hanging from his hips.
“Where’s the baby girl?” Adam said when he saw his friend arriving alone.
“Platt stole her from me”, he answered. He would have arrived even later if he had waited for Trudy to give her back to him. Kim smiled at the image.
“We haven’t seen her in a while”, Al peeked his head from his hidden desk to participate in the conversation, “A bit of her cheerfulness will do good to this place”
“Well, she is, and I’m quoting, “very excited” to see you all”, the proud dad smirked.
But as much excited as she was, the baby Halstead was very shy to even say good morning to them. As soon as Trudy Platt carried her upstairs, the girl ran towards her father as fast as she could.
“Why are you crying?” Jay asked in a very low voice, while sitting her on his lap.
But the one answering the question was Platt, “She started to worry when she noticed you weren’t around downstairs and then silently started crying”
Ashamed, the little Halstead girl hugged her dad’s neck and buried her face on his shoulder. A chorous of “aw” was heard around. This wasn’t what she expected, visiting the police station didn’t make her feel excited after all.
“It’s alright”, Jay kept whispering into her ear. It was only after a few minutes later that she calmed down, but even when she was acting as if nothing had happened, she was still embarrased.
Al passed by from the coffee room to his desk and handed a coockie to the girl. She hesitated on accepting it, she first turned to her dad who nodded in approval and she stretched her tiny arm to take it.
“Precauted girl. Good”, Olinsky smiled at her and she smiled back.
“Why don’t you take your colors and get to work in your coloring book, hm?” Jay said more like an order as he put her down. He couldn’t really advance in his work if she was there right beside him.
They walked to an unoccupied desk right infront of Adam. The girl climbed the chair as her dad took her belongings out of the unicorn backpack, “There you go. I’ll be right there if you need me. Remember to…”
“…be quiet, shhh” his daughter completed.
She stayed there for a while, coloring different pages. The detectives, specially Kim, would praise her artistic work whenever they had to walk by her side. She liked Kim, that woman was funny, but she couldn’t really take her eyes off of the man who had gave her the cookie: Alvin Olinsky, but he was too busy to noticed.
“Daddy”, she silently stood up an whispered, trying not to distract the people around, “I don’t want to color anymore. I want to draw”
“Uh, let me check if I have something for you to—“
“I have some white sheets in here”, Hailey opened a drawer and handed a bunch to the Halstead girl. She liked Hailey too, she had a bright smile.
“How do you say?” Her father encouraged her before going back to her place.
“Thank you, Hailssss”
She was immersed in her own world, drawing, coloring and cutting. She stood up to get closer to Adam and touched his leg to call his attention.
“How do you write ‘I love you’?” She asked the detective.
“Oh!” He took a notebook and a pen, “Very easy, let me just show you”
Jay looked up to witness the scene, altough he couldn’t hear any word they were exchanching, “Hey, sweetie”, he called out, “Let Ruz work, ok?”
“No big deal” His collegue said handing her the sheet.
A few minutes later, the little girl stood up once more to go with her father. She stretched her hand to hand him a very colorful circle of paper.
“Wow! Is this for me?” Jay exxagerated his emotion, and then melted when he read the phrase ‘I love you’ followed by a crooked heart.
With excitement, she explained it was a cup holder: “Yea, you can put your mug there”. Following orders from such a smooth voice, Jay placed his mug over the gift.
“Just what I needed” He kissed her head. When she withdrew of his side, Jay immediatly took the paper with the witten phrase and placed it in a spot where he was able to see it all the time.
Before going back to sit on her chair, the girl passed by Al’s desk and stood next to him staring, until he finally noticed.
She took him by surprise, a cute surprise, “Hey, you scared me!” That made her laugh.
“What do you like the most?” The kid asked wothout any other introduction, “Ducks or unicorns?”
Detective Olinsky took his time to answer the question. He observed that Halstead’s daughter was wearing a T-shirt full of unicorns, her pink shinny backback also had the shape of a unicorn, so he went by that, thinking it would be the correct answer.
“Unicorns, I love unicorns”
But she didn’t had the reaction he expected, instead she sadenned, “Oh! I was going to draw a duck for you”
Being in a space close to Olinsky, and paying attention to what his daughter was doing all the time, Jay listened and couldn’t help to smile to the reaction of his parter.
“Oh, well, I love ducks too!” Alvin tried to amend his error.
“A duck, then?”
“Yea, a duck!”
And she moved her tiny legs as fast as she could. Both detectives shared a look and laughed.
It didn’t pass a lot of time when the girl was next to Olinsky’s chair again, but this time he noticed. Without speaking, she handed to him the drawing of a duck happily swimming in a lake.
“What? Is this for me?” She nodded. There was something peaceful in his voice that she liked. “Thank you very much! I really love it. What’s this?” He pointed to a brown circle tha was close to the animal. The answer make him smile showing his teeth.
“A cookie”
“Well, this masterpiece deserves to be in a special place” The detective took a bit of tape and pasted the drawing where it could be seen by everyone.
Little Halstead ran to his father to tell him what just had happened.
“That’s not fair!” Adam teased her later on the day. “I want my own drawing too! I showed you how to write that phrase, you gotta remember that!”
“It will have to be another day”, Jay intervened. “Time to pick everything up, your mom’s on her way to pick you up”
“Mommy’s back?” She asked with the same bright eyes she had when realizing she was going to the police station.
“Yeah!” Her dad smirked.
“I am excited!” She stated while putting her stuff back into the backpack.
“Say goodbye, time to go. Mommy’s downstairs”
She waved her little hand to everybody in the bullpen, “Bye bye”. She even peeked her head into Voight’s office, “Goodbye, Serge”
“You are leaving already? Goodbye, little one” Hank said in a very friendly tone, “Come back soon, whenever you want”
She laughed at the idea, “I will”
It was a bit hard for her to walk down the stairs. “Do you need help?” Jay asked with his arms opened to carry her and she jumped to him.
As soon as she spotted Y/N at the desk with Trudy she yelled at her. Jay put her down on the floor when the stairs were over and his baby ran towards her mom, who picked her up in a tight hug.
“Mommy!”
“Ugh, how much I missed you” Y/N said covering their daughter in kisses.
“Me too!”
“Did the detectives threated you good?” Trudy asked, “How was your day at daddy’s work, hm?”
Wothout hesitating and with a lot of emotion, the girl answered “Oh! It was exciting!”

A/N: Hello guys. So I’m not entirely in love with this, I’m sorry if it’s not that good and I'm sorry for being a little disconnected. As Olivia "Liv" Halstead is Maggie Elizabeth Jones. Hope everyone likes this original idea.
Don't be afraid to leave your comment!
----------
Being a kindergarten teacher had its perks. For once you worked with the young, creative minds and had the chance to potentially make a positive impact on them. But other times it really sucked, for example like a couple of hours ago.
You were in your classroom having lunch by yourself as usual. When one of your students Olivia came to you with a troubled expression. Obviously you thought the worst about it, call it instinct.
“Hi, miss Y/N” her sweet voice said as she took a seat in front of your desk. You smiled at her being met with a small one in return.
“Hello sunshine. Are you okay?” you asked immediately putting your lunch on pause and giving your full attention to her.
“I’m sad” she said casting her eyes down, this made you furrow your eyebrows
“Can I help you? We can talk about why you’re sad” you asked warily but gently giving her a sympathetic smile while you searched for her eyes
“I don’t want to make you upset miss Y/N” she said as she fiddled with her little hands.
Why would you be upset? But then again, Liv was probably the most selfless child you have ever met and obviously she would say something like this. Even in her short years of age she always thought of others first, she was a really empathic kid.
“Little miss Olivia. It’s alright to talk about feelings, they are valid, and you would never make me upset” you said in a serious manner as you nodded encouragingly
“Even if it’s sadness, Miss Y/N?” “Even if it’s sadness” you confirmed nodding
“I don’t have a mom for mother daughter day party” she said looking at you with big green doe eyes as if you held the answer to every question. But before you could say something, she continued.
“My daddy said my mom went to a place called heaven and that she watches over me” she said sighing as she crossed her arms over your desk placing her chin on top. At her words you sighed too
“My mom went to heaven too, when I was your age” you said lips tight as you tried to keep your emotions at bay
“Why?” she curiously asked, making you avert your gaze before looking back at her and mustering a smile
“That’s how life works. Sometimes heaven needs more people to help watch over us” you said taking a deep breath
But how could you explain the concept of death to a little girl. You were sure that her dad had done the absolute best at it. Although you had only briefly talked a couple of times between drop out and pick up, and at teacher parent conference day. Nevertheless never touching the topic about Olivia’s mother. Jay Halstead seemed like a really great father to this little girl and quite frankly you didn’t want to overstep. You were broken out of your thought as you heard a little sob,
“But I don’t want her there” Olivia said as her little voice broke slightly along with your soul.
“Oh Liv. I’m sorry. I promise you, it will be better, one day you’ll understand” you said as you reached her side. Kneeling to her height and caressing her head as you hugged her
That conversation going on in circles in your head as you waited patiently biting good mornings to each of your students and their mothers at the drop line. While there was another conversation taking place in a car, as the passenger was getting ready for the drop off at school.
“Liv I’m so sorry I can’t come to your get together” Jay said guiltily as he sighed looking at his daughter through the review mirror. He was heartbroken knowing he had hurt and possibly disappointed the only important person in his life.
“You promised you would come” Olivia sadly said as she blinked rapidly in order to not let the tears fall as she avoided her father’s gaze
“I know. I know baby. But I have to go chase bad guys remember” Jay said turning to look at her once he parked in the drop line. A pained expression took place on his face when he saw her little tears.
“Hey-” he started as he was about to reach for her hand, stopping
“I know…” she whispered disappointed brushing her tears away before Jay could see her, but of course he already had
Before Jay could muster a response the back door was opened, and Jay met your eyes. Big smile on your face as Olivia climbed out of the truck, hand in yours for support.
“Hello little miss Liv” you said enthusiastically but as a response Olivia mustered an unenthusiastic ‘hello’. You glanced at Jay again smiling sadly before Liv waved goodbye to her father still not meeting his eyes.
“Hi I’m sorry. She’s in a bit of a mood. I broke a promise” Jay said as sad eyes followed his daughters retrieving figure.
“No worries. I understand. I’ll look after her, she’ll have a good time, I promise” you said smiling,
“Thanks for that. Have a good day” Jay shared a smile as he shook his head before biting goodbyes
You both had a thing for each other, but neither had made a move upon it. You had always stayed professional for the sake of Olivia and so has he. There were always lingering looks at parent-teacher conferences, but they were ones of admiration. Add obviously the fact that you are his daughters teacher, so being in a relationship would stir up a lot of drama between the other parents including your superiors.
When you entered your classroom all of the mom’s were sitting with their kids already doing the activities and eating the snacks you had brought for the occasion. With the exception of Olivia, who was sitting at a little table all by herself and this stirred something inside you.
In the district Jay was struggling to concentrate and the guilt was eating him alive. The look and the tears that he saw on Olivia’s face hunting him relentlessly.
“Hey, didn’t you have little nugget’s mom-daughter thing today?” Kevin asked as he walked into the breakroom
“Don’t remind me. She’s gonna hate me” Jay said as he stirred his coffee
“Man. Don’t tell me you’re missing it” Kevin asked leaning besides Jay, being met with a hum in confirmation
“There will be more in the future, I just-” Jay was interrupted by the other detective
“Hell na, man. You go do what you gotta do” Kevin started looking at his friend like if he had grown two heads
“Kev-”
“Don’t let her down, bro. I’ll cover for you. Go” at this Jay looked at his friend trying to get his thoughts in place.
Kevin took a deep breath before taking ahold of Jay, dragging him into the bullpen and practically throwing Jay’s stuff in his arms before rushing him out to his truck.
“You go be a dad. I got your back” Kevin told Jay as the latter turned his truck on.
“Thanks, man, I’ll owe you big time” “Don’t worry about it, a beer at Molly’s can work for me”
Guiltily he thought of the brief conversation he had with Olivia and the mistake he would be committing if he didn’t make it. As he parked in the school he knew he wasn’t about to let his daughter be by herself, he wasn’t going to let her down.
Entering the classroom he looked over the heads and tables trying to identify his daughter. There she was on a table gluing something, but before he could move he saw you sitting beside her. Now noticing Liv’s laugh mixed with your own.
“So Liv, what’s your favorite color?” you asked as you colored the paper you had prepared for everyone, but Olivia didn’t respond. As you heard a gasp leave her mouth your head snapped up to her face following her eyesight to the door.
“He came, miss Y/N” Hazel excitedly said before leaping to her feet and running into her father’s awaiting arms, the latter picking her up kissing her cheek
“Hey baby!” Jay said with a smile on his face, as he saw how Olivia beamed happily
“Daddy you came” “Of course, I made a promise remember” he said matching her excitement.
At the same time he walked to the table Olivia was occupying as you stood up looking at them with a shy smile. When they reached the table Liv sat down explaining to her dad what she was doing, to which he nodded smiling with excitement. You took that as your signal to go back to your desk,
“Hey, uh, Miss Y/N” Jay said as he walked over to where you had stopped and turned to him
“Just Y/N it’s fine” you waved him off with a kind smile
“…Y/N-”
“I’m sorry for intruding-” “It’s-”
“She told about her mom; thought I could help” you rambled with a remorse expression waiting as you felt a hand being placed on your shoulder
“Take a deep breath” Jay said as he chuckled, to which you scratched the back of your neck nervously
“Thank you, you didn’t have to- but you did, and I really appreciate it” he said smiling sadly as you both looked back towards Olivia, before you shook your head again
“She’s a great girl, really smart” you said smiling slightly as you returned Olivia’s wave
“Yeah she is. That’s all her” he answered turning back to look at you
“I deeply apologize, the school should really mind what they write. If it was up to me it should be parent-child day” you said as you tilted your head, before Jay could answer another voice interrupted
“Dad. Can miss Y/N sit with us? She was going to braid my hair next” Liv said excitedly as she looked up to Jay
“Sure. If she’s not too busy, remember she has adult responsibilities” he answered looking down at Liv’s big eyes
“She’s not! She can teach you how to braid my hair, dad” Olivia answered. You bit your lips trying to fight the laugh that was trying to surface when you watched Jay’s mouth hanging
“Damn, why do you have to wound me like that, pumpkin” Jay said looking at you to see if you had heard. Shaking his head as you placed a hand over your mouth chuckling.

Uncle and Niece
Characters: Will Halstead x Daughter!Reader, Jay Halstead x Niece!Reader, Adam Ruzek, Kelly Severide, Sylvie Brett, Antonio Dawson
Warnings: Nothing
Summary: Everyone is introduced to the uncle and niece duo.
A/N: The ending of this was very rushed because it got really awkward and I didn't want it to get to long. I dont really like this but I am posting this in celebration of me getting my first job!!!!
*****
Jay hummed to himself, idly scrolling through his phone reading some messages while he took the occasional sip of his coffee. He managed to get a full night sleep without getting woken up by someone calling about a crime scene, allowing him to wake up earlier than usual.
Making sure everything was clean and clear, Jay clipped his gun and badge to his belt, slipping on his jacket but before he could open the door on his own accord, his doorbell rung, confusing him as to who would be at his apartment at this time.
With caution, Jay opened to door and was surprised to be met with a frantic looking Will. The doctors hair was a total mess, bags under his eyes, his coat haphazardly put on over his scrubs, his bag just about sitting on his shoulder with his hand clutching a smaller hand.
"I am so sorry but I need a really big favour man." Will said, panting as he just about managed to get all his words out. He looked like hell but his little girl on the other hand, no a single hair of hers was out of place.
Looking back and forth from the father and daughter duo, Jay eventually connected the dots, sighing as he did so. Going through all the possible scenarios in his head as to what the worse would happen if he went forward with this really big favour.
"The daycare at Med isn't open and no one is available to babysit but I had no idea you were working. You know what? Leave it, it's fine, forget I ever asked." Will rambled, only now noticing that Jay was leaving for work.
"Dude, it's fine." Jay shook his head, huffing as though he was hurt at Will trying to leave. "I'll take her to work with me. Everyone will love her and it'll be our first official time hanging out together."
"You sure?" Will replied, apprehensive as he let go of Faith's hand, letting her hold Jay's instead. "I owe you man."
"Nah, it's fine." Jay shook his head again, smiling down at his niece. "We'll have fun at the precinct."
"Alright Faith, be good for Uncle Jay Jay, okay? Make sure he stays out of trouble." Will said, bending down so he was eye level with his daughter. A smile she inherited from him plastered her lips as she bid her goodbyes, pressing a loving kiss on his cheek as she waved him away.
"Bye daddy! I love you too much!" Faith shouted down the hallway, watching Will hurry into the elevator, not wanting to be late. "I love you!"
"I love you too baby!" Will shouted in reply, enthusiastically reciprocating her wave which totally contrasted his completely messed up appearance.
With the elevator doors closing, Jay and Faith were left alone for the first time in both their lives. Looking down at the three year old, the three year old craning her neck to look up at her thirty something uncle, she gave him a toothy grin sending this weird feeling in Jay's gut. All of a sudden, he felt this strong urge to protect this little being with all his livelihood no matter what the universe sent this way. It was weird.
"Okay, let's go to work."
*****
For the entire car ride, without being prompted to, Faith was rambling on about anything that came to mind and Jay was intently listening even though he struggled to make out a few words. Faith spoke about her toys, her amazing father and how excited she was now that she was three since it was her birthday a month before Will suddenly showed up in Chicago.
With her much smaller hand in his, it was weird as to how something so small could exist but it was a miracle it could, the uncle and niece duo walked into the 21st precinct. Jay patiently held her hand at all times as she took one step at a time, the steps were much bigger than the normal ones she was used to but she denied any of his help.
Before Jay could make a clean escape, making a dash towards the metal gates, he was stopped by a very familiar voice causing him to come to a halt, screwing his eyes shut at the impending doom he was about to face.
"Chuckles, what do you have here?" Trudy projected, her hands on her hips when she noticed the tiny human being accompanying one of her detectives.
"Sargent, this is my brothers daughter Faith. Remember Will? The doctor?" Jay replied apprehensively, crossing his fingers he wouldn't get reemed in the middle of the district.
"Sure, anyways, Faith is an amazing name for such an adorable girl." Trudy, shrugged it off, leaning over the desk as she started gushing over the toddler. "I see your uncle missed out on those beautiful red locks, disappointing really."
Faith smiled, giggling despite not understanding what Trudy meant but Jay did and he felt slightly offended. "Okayy and that's enough for one day, we'll be upstairs if you need us sarge."
"It's time to say bye now Faith. Say bye Trudy!"
"Bye Bye!" Faith smiled, waving at the older woman who unbeknownst to her had become the most amazing person in the three year olds eyes.
*****
Whoever came up into intelligence, their footsteps could be heard against the wood flooring, allowing all the detectives to know who was coming up based on the force or speed but this was confusing.
There was definitely more than one person, one being bigger than the other but both going at the same slow pace. No one was able to make out who it was till they made an appearance.
Finally, after what seemed like forever, Jay and Faith made it to the top of the staircase and were in the bullpen. For Jay, it was nothing amazing and he was here everyday, it was basically his second home but for Faith, it was both scary but amazing.
"Woah! Who's incredibly adorable kid did you kidnap?" Adam teased, a smirk on his face, being the first to notice the little girl that no one knew. Getting up from his spinning chair, he set down his coffee and leaned against his desk to get a better look at the duo.
"Jay, you never told us you had a daughter." Erin said accusingly, also smirking as she joined in the teasing. She was slightly shocked but easily hid it along with her confusion and slight irritation.
"Her name is Faith and she's my niece." Jay said with some pride, introducing Faith to all his colleagues. "My brother put me on babysitting today, so I expect all of you to be on your best behaviour."
"Sir yes sir." Adam's smirk didn't falter, walking towards the pair, bending down so he could offer his hand. "It's lovely to meet you Faith, I'm Adam."
"Hi." Faith replied, taking his hand confidently but she didn't move, simply holding it. She smiled at him, flashing a toothy grin in his direction. "Are you a superhero like Jay Jay too?"
"Indeed I am, aren't you smart?" Adam said rhetorically, pushing himself up so everyone else could talk to you. "We're gonna get along great."
"So Adam's already introduced himself." Jay rolled his eyes, pointing at Adam who stood proudly with his hands in his pocket. "This is Antonio, Erin, Al and my boss is Hank. They're all detectives like me."
At his last five words, Faith's whiskey coloured eyes automatically brightened and everyone noticed. She shuffled on her feet, her eyes sparkling in wonder as she looked at them all.
"Hey, you wanna hear a funny story about your uncle cause I've got too many." Antonio spoke up, smiling at the widening smile on the three-year-olds face at the mention of stories. Without a second thought, her hand was out of Jay's grasp and she walked straight to the Latino who picked her up, sitting her on his desk.
Besides Hank and Al, Antonio had the most and probably best experience with children and it definitely showed.
With a soft smile, Jay watched as the senior detective divuldged into a most likely embarrassing story before he walked away, slipping past Erin and moving towards Hank who he had much to explain to.
*****
Thanking all the forces in power today, Jay's brows scrunched in confusion at the purple hair tie that had somehow ended up around his fingers, a cute plastic flower cheaply glued to the front of it.
Throughout the day, Faith had been given a tour of the bullpen and even had the chance of manning the front desk with Trudy when intelligence went out.
It was just after lunch and Faith had woken up from a very good nap, the painless indentations on her face proving such. But, her hair had gotten completely messed up and Jay was now stuck.
Faith giggled at the confusion painting her uncles face, the adorable sounds washing away any of the impatience Jay just had. It was crazy how the toddler made him feel, even though she wasn't his own child.
"You know what, you look great Faith." Jay shrugged, tucking her red curls behind her ears, patting down the uncontrolled frizz all around before picking her out of her carseat and gently setting her on the ground.
For the billionth time today, Faith found herself in awe of the firehouse. She had only ever seen them in her cartoons and despite her excitement, she could feel the nervousness bubbling in her stomach at how big everything was in real life.
As if sensing her miniscule amount of anxiety, Jay scooped the toddler into his arms dramatically and walked up the apron and into the firehouse where he could see squad sitting at their table.
Jay's sudden action shocked her, sending butterflies in her stomach as she shrieked, laughter easily following suit when he wouldn't set her down despite her poor pleas.
The sound of childish laughter interrupted any conversation happening at the squad table, all their heads turning to find the source and to say they were confused was the least they could say.
"Hey man, you good? Whose baby did you kidnap?" Kelly asked, getting up from his chair, giving the detective a typical bro hug while minding the toddler perched on his hip.
"You remember my brother right, he's a doctor at med." Jay said, continuing when the lieutenant nodded. "This is his daughter Faith. Faith, this is one of my friends Kelly, he's a firefighter. Can you say hi?"
"Why do you have a girls name if your a boy?"
Her innocent question shocked them all. Jay's eyes went wide as he stared at his niece, Kelly was a mix between laughter and shellshock while the three squad members immediately began laughing.
"Faith, I what-"
"Oh my gosh! Who is this beauty?" Sylvie said, preening at the sight of the girl as she exited the ambulance. "She looks exactly like the new doctor at Med you know. Oh yeah, did you know that he has the same surname as you Jay, crazy."
"That's my brother Sylvie and this is his daughter Faith." Jay replied with ease, a smile on his face at the rambling paramedic.
Before she could address the fact that he had a brother, she frowned as she cast eyes on Faith's unruly hair.
"Does she have a hair tie?"
"Yeah, it's here, why?"
"Give her here."
And with that, the blonde paramedic disappeared into the firehouse with his niece and her cheap hair tie gone from his wrist.
"Boden's waiting for you inside his office Jay."
"Oh yes! I actually have work to do. Thanks severide."

Requested: Hank Voight x teen daughter reader, he finds out she's being bullied at school. - @meyocoko

“Any cases?” Jay asked as he sat down at his desk.
Erin shook her head. It had been a slow day for the intelligence unit. “No its been a slow day.”
“Hmmm.” Voight hummed also listening to Erin’s answer. Even Voight was getting bored.
But when Trudy came up the stairs with concern on her face, that got everyone's attention. “Voight. Y/n’s principle is on the phone.”
“Thank you, Trudy.” Voight nodded and headed into his office and picked up the phone. “Hello.”
“Hello, Mr.Voight. I’m sorry for calling you at work.” Y/n’s principal apologized over the phone.
“It's not a problem. What's going on? Is Y/n alright?” Voight spoke with a tight voice. It was rare when the school called him so he was really worried but trying not to show it.
There was a pause on the phone before the person on the other side cleared their throat. “That's why I called there was an altercation and Y/n got very hurt so we’ve sent her to Chicago Med. We wanted to let you know and we also we’re hoping you could send down someone to talk to the kids responsible.”
“Yeah, I can do that.” Voight stated after a moment of silence. After that, the phone call ended and Voight shook his head trying to control his anger before exiting his office. “Ruzek and Linsdey head down to Y/n’s school and bring in the kids they’ll have there waiting for you back here to talk. Burgess call their parents and let them know that I’ll be pressing charges.”
“Voight, what happened?” Erin asked as her and the others started on their orders. All of them were now concerned about the teen girl they had all come to love and be very protective of.
“Some kids hurt Y/n bad enough that the school has sent her to Chicago Med.” Voight explained gruffly, trying to keep his worries and anger in check.
“What?!” Adam raised his brows in shock and he felt anger bubbling up on the inside. Much like everyone else in the room.
“Seriously? They just what? Let that happen?!” Jay was furious, he hadn’t known her the longest but even with his problems with Voight. Jay and Y/n had become close. They’d hang out, and go do things together. It bonded them. They’re friends. Y/n is like a little sister that Jay never had.
“Apparently. Look I’m going to Med to be with my daughter.” It unnerved the unit with how calm Voight seemed to be.
“I’ll come with you.” Jay said getting up to follow the older man.
“Let's go.” Voight nodded, he knew how close his daughter was to Jay. He might bring some comfort.
Everyone else headed off to do what they needed to do.
Once they arrived at Med, they went straight to the ED. Upon seeing his brother Jay called out. “Will!”
“How is she?” Voight asked as the redheaded Halstead appeared and stood in front of them.
Will let out a sigh, looking between his brother and Voight. “She doesn’t need surgery, which is the good news.”
As much of a relief that was it still left a question. “An the bad news?”
“About 70% of her body is covered in bruising, and she has a broken wrist, a few cracked ribs, and a laceration above her eye.” Will gave them a sad look. He to like a lot knew Y/n, and Will felt for the girl. She didn’t deserve this.
“Jeez Will.” Jay felt like throwing up. How could the school let it get this far? Or happen at all.
“I know.” Will nodded, he felt just like Jay.
“Where is she? Can I see her?” Voight asked keeping his feelings at bay for the time being. He was feeling to many things at once anyway.
“Yeah, right this way.” Will stated, leading them back to the trauma room Y/n Voight had been assigned to.
As they reached the room and saw y/n sitting up in the bed slightly leaning back. Probably to take pressure off her ribs.
“Hey, how about we go get copies of the injury reports and give them a minute?” Jay suggested with a tilt of his head. Wanting to give the father and daughter some space.
There were some moments of silence as Voight moved to sit down in the chair next to the hospital bed. It got to the point that Voight needed answers to keep his brain occupied. “Kid-”
“I know, dad.” Y/n cut him off nodding. Already knowing what he was going to say.
“What exactly happened?” he asked. He needed to know for many reasons but his main one and his focus now was just why and how this happened to his little girl. “Y/n.”
Y/n let out a sigh, knowing she had to tell him cause it was going to far and out of hand now. “It’s not the first time something happened.”
“You mean-”
Y/n nodded not looking at him. She couldn’t look at him. Not in the eyes. “It's normally not this bad.”
Now Voight was having an even harder time keeping it together. How could he not notice? How come she didn’t come to him? “Why didn’t you tell me? Or anyone?”
“I've tried before. To tell teachers bit either they do nothing or it just makes it worse.” She had thought about telling her dad or even Jay but if the school wouldn’t help how could they?
Voight shook his head reaching out for her hand, trying to get her to look at him. “I could’ve done something.”
“As a dad. Not as a cop. It wasn’t bad enough for cop involvement.” Y/n gave him a tight lipped sad smile.
She had a point and it bugged him cause he knew it was true. But now, this. This meant he could get involved as a cop, and a dad. “Well now it is and you can bet your ass I’m gonna do something about it.”
Y/n cracked a smile at him. “I don’t know who they should be more afraid of. You or Jay.”
“Combined force, sweetheart.”Voight gave her a half smirk half smile. Voight know she was right, he saw and could feel the anger coming off of Jay on the ride over to Med.
“Ohhh, deadly.” Y/n giggled wiggling her eyebrows and laughed. Even though they knew it was true.
Voight squeezed her hand for comfort before speaking. “You know you can talk to me right? About anything?”
He truly hoped she knew that. That she could come to him about anything and everything.
“I didn’t want to worry you.” Y/n shrugged but looked down feeling a little ashamed. That she didn’t tell him and that it happened at all.
“I’m your father. I worry even when your okay.” he told her sternly. He cared about her more than he could ever tell her. Or show her.
“I love you dad.” Y/n smiled at him grateful to have this off her chest, for him to know, and that he was by her side.
“I love you too.” Voight was gonna take care of this. An no one was gonna get in his way.

Expectantly looking at the two people before him, Sergeant Voight rests his eyes on his daughter.
Trying to analyze and prepare for the choice she makes he studies her face. He studies her brown eyes, long brown hair, her beautifully square jaw and soft features. He always admired his daughter, she was a carbon copy of his late wife Camille.
Stepping back to lightly sit on the edge of his desk, Voight clasps his hands together in his lap still waiting for an answer.
Lightly chuckling out of disbelief, Cassie looks over at Jay who was still harboring the same reaction.
"Well?" Her father finally asks.
"I-I don't know." The girl says shocked.
"Sarge, don't you think it might be a little too soon, considering..." Jay interjected with his arms crossed in front of him.
"Considering everything that happened a week ago?" Voight asks assuming the rest of the other man's sentence.
"Uh, yeah." Jay says frankly.
"Well also considering we've been down a detective in the unit for a week now, and Antonio hasn't had a partner, I think now is an appropriate time to fill that spot. Look, I'm not trying to replace Willhite. That's not what's happening. Willhite was an extraordinary detective and what happened was tragic. But I would be doing a dishonor to my unit if I leave an open spot. That means we have one less person on busts, we have one less person to help solve cases, and we have one less person putting bad guys behind bars. Now, I see someone that I trust and that I have faith in to live up to Willhite's reputation and thrive in this environment. So Cassie, what do you say?" Voight looks at his daughter again who looks even more intimidated than she was the first time he offered.
A million thoughts were running through Cassie's head, and yet she still couldn’t pick one and take the job. Being a paramedic gives her a rush, its fills a hole inside her that aches to help. But so did being a police officer at one point. Yeah she fell into a routine and couldn’t commit to being a patrolman, but this is a completely different field. This is becoming a detective.
Cassie had grown up around detectives her whole life. She knew the ins and outs of how they did their job, she understood the consequences of the hours and how some cases take a larger toll than others. But she also knew the effects of being too ‘in’ on the job. How easily it is to overwhelm yourself, and completely indulge in the rush that puts the bad people away. That’s what scared her. She knew her father wasn’t around a lot when she was growing up because of this job, so a piece of her does resent it. She resents the nights they would eat dinner without him, the Sunday’s he wasn’t at church. She resented the birthday parties and minor holidays he would miss, she resented it all. One of the main reasons she hasn’t made a choice yet is because one of her biggest fears is turning into her father. But also one of her biggest goals is to do that very thing.
“I say I need a little more time.” She finally admits.
“Okay. You have two days,” Voight says standing up and walking over to his chair.
“Okay? Thats it?” She asks confused.
“That’s it. You need time, I gave you time.” He said sitting down and opening a case file.
Cassie looked at Jay again who was biting the inside of his cheek.
Looking back at her father who isn’t paying any attention to the pair now she rubbed the back of her neck.
“I- um, yeah, okay. I’ll let you know.” She said turning to walking out the door but Jay was blocking it.
Staring into space and not noticing the girl trying to leave, Jay finally moved once she cleared her throat muttering a quick ‘excuse me.’
“What was that about?” Erin asked as the pair walked out of Voight’s office catching the rest of intelligence’s attention.
Cassie walked closer to the other girl before disclosing what just happened.
“He just offered me a job.” She said emotionlessly crossing her arms and staring daggers into Lindsay’s eyes. Cassie didn’t say it loud enough for the rest of the unit to hear, but by Erin’s reaction they knew it was big.
“Are you serious!?” Erin shouted catching everyone’s attention again making Cassie’s eyes grow wide.
“Shhh,” the girl said glancing around at their audience. “C’mon.” She finally said bowing her head and walking out of the office with Erin following her.
Once they stepped outside the district to catch some fresh air, Cassie broke. Full pacing, chewing her lips, and lightly pinching her bicep with her crossed arms.
“He offered me a job!” She finally shouted looking at her just as shocked sister. The only difference is, Lindsay doesn’t show it as obviously.
“What are you going to do?” Erin asked sitting down on the bench.
Stopping in her tracks Cassie turns to do the same. Now instead of pacing, her leg is restlessly bouncing against the bench seat, slightly annoying Erin.
“I don’t know. I just got my paramedic certification and I’ve been promoted to PIC. I absolutely adore my partner, Sylvie Brett. The environment has relaxed since Matt and Dad have worked out their issues, I just, I’m at a loss right now.” She said resting her elbows on her knees.
“Okay, so what are some pros and cons of becoming a detective right now.” Erin pressed now rubbing circles against the other girls back.
“Well, I’ve already been through the academy and worked the streets, so I’d just come directly upstairs if I transfer. I get to work closer with you, Dad, and Jay. The hours seem pretty shit though,”
“And 24-48 hour shifts are any better?” Erin asked chuckling.
“You’re right.” Cassie said quietly.
“But I won’t get to wear my 5.11’s anymore.” Cassie said sadly looking over at her sister.
“What is that?”
“The EMS pants.”
“And?”
“And they made my butt look good. Sue me.”
Bursting into a fit of laughter, the girls took a few minutes to recollect their thoughts and calm down. All of the previous worries leaving Cassie’s mind, all except for one.
“What if I don’t have what it takes?” Cassie asked sitting up straight and looking dead ahead of her.
“In what way?”
“What if I won’t be able to solve the crimes or actually put people away? What if I’m just the weak link that’s going to make the whole unit drown?” She asks quieter truly unsure.
“If you didn’t have what it takes, do you really think Hank would’ve offered you the job?” Erin asked.
“Out of pity? Probably.” Cassie said knowing it wasn’t true.
“No. If you didn’t have what it took to be a good cop, Hank would not put the whole unit in jeopardy just to make you feel better in some way. Especially not out of pity.” Erin said looking over at her sister who knows better.
“How am I supposed to just quit my other job? Just walk in and say, ‘Hey here’s my two week notice, but scratch that and make it my last shift notice because instead of being a paramedic I’m gonna be a detective in a special unit! Don’t hate me, I know it’s only my third time switching my whole career field but you know, yolo!’”
“Precisely.” Erin joked earning an eye roll from Cassie.
Exactly two days later on the dot, Cassie had a plan.
Walking into 51, Cassie went straight to Chief Boden’s office.
“Sir, can I speak with you?” She asked knocking on his slightly cracked door.
“Yeah, come on in.” He said waving her in and taking his glasses off.
“So what’s this about? You’re not on shift until tomorrow.” He said as he watched her get comfortable in the seat before him.
“I-uh,” Cassie chuckled a little as she tried to fan her face so tears won’t fall. Taking a deep breath before continuing she looked her Chief in the eye and flashed a sympathetic smile. Taking the resignation slip out of her coat pocket, she layed the document on his desk.
“Cassie,” He said almost breathlessly as he stared at the pink slip before him.
“If this is about what happened a few days ago, you can take a few shifts off. You know, decompress. Cope. You don’t have-”
“It’s not about that,” Cassie interrupted.
“It’s not about that situation, or you, or anyone else here at 51. You guys are my family and I will forever cherish the experiences and connections I’ve made here.” Taking a pause Cassie glanced down at her now bleeding cuticles as she was picking at them nervously.
“As you may know, I used to be a cop at the 31st district. I completed the academy, and I was a patrolman for two years. In the middle of that, I realized that, that uniform was not for me. I realized I had another calling, and that was to be a paramedic. Thats why for the last three years I’ve worked my ass off, pardon my language, to become an EMT then a Paramedic, and now a PIC. But after what happened, they let me in the room to help question Lullo. To help get the confession from him, and I did. And it was euphoric. To be the one to help put someone behind bars that deserved it, that was my calling. That was my original intention of becoming a cop, and that’s why, when I got the job offer to become a detective, to continue my law enforcement career, I knew I couldn’t pass it up. Becoming a paramedic has been the best thing in my life, and I will forever be indebted to you, and everyone else that helped that dream come true. But I know becoming a detective, and doing real work besides patrolling the streets, that’s my life’s purpose.” Cassie finally said wiping a few stray tears.
Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes for a moment, Boden didn’t know what to say.
“As much as I admire your adaptability, and your ability to find purpose in so many things in life, I’ve got to say I’m disappointed. I’m obviously sad to see you go, I truly thought you had a big future here, and being a paramedic in general. Because you’re good at it. You’ve got the guts and the leadership skills to take charge and be the person everyone else looks up too in this community, but I understand you have to follow your gut. I understand you have bigger things to accomplish in life. Cassie, you’re going to do amazing no matter where you work, no matter what you do. I will always be here for you if you need anything, but I want you to consider your decision one last time. Because once I file this paper, you will never be a paramedic again. Not unless you go through the courses and training again. Do you understand that?” He finally asks looking at the girl.
Taking a pause and truly thinking everything over again. Cassie reluctantly nods.
“I understand.” She says now earning a slow nod from the man.
“Then I wish you well. You’re going to do great things.” He finally says standing up at the same time as Cassie and giving her a brief hug.
“Cassie wait,” He calls out making her stop in her tracks, “have you told anyone?”
“No.”
“Do you want to? That way you can break the news?”
Taking a deep breath and thinking it over, Cassie knew she wouldn’t be able to go through with this if she did, so in the most selfish way possible, Cassie shook her head.
“No.” She said now walking out.
As Cassie walked out to her car she let her tears free fall and pulled out her phone.
Cassie:“I’m in.”
Dad: “I know. I’ll see you Monday.”

Summary: As Lyla is driving with her dad, some songs a daughter would (hopefully) never want her dad to hear comes on.
TW: Mentions of inappropriate songs, like one cuss word
Word Count: Around 650
Note: Hi!  This is a Jay/Hailey parent fic because yea.  Also I don’t own the songs mentioned obviously and I feel like I should mention that but yea.
I hope you enjoy!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyla sat at her desk, finishing her homework for the day when she heard a knock on her door.
“Yeah?”  Lyla called out, not sure of who it was and wondering what they wanted.
“Can I come in?”  Her dad asked from the other side.
“Yeah.”  Lyla replied, looking up from her homework as Jay opened the door.
“What are you doing?”  Jay inquired, standing in the doorway.
“I’m just finishing my homework.”  Lyla answered.
“Okay.  How much do you have left?”
     “Just two questions.  Why?”
“When you’re done do you want to go driving?”
     “Sure.”
“Okay.  I’ll be downstairs waiting.”  Jay began to walk out of the room before turning around, “Oh, and don’t forget your permit this time.”
“Yes officer.”  Lyla mocked playfully, Jay rolling his eyes.
Jay pointed at her playfully, “Hey, it’s detective.”
Lyla rolled her eyes as Jay chuckled, closing the door softly and making his way back downstairs.
Just three minutes later Lyla walked downstairs, making her way to her dad who was sitting on the couch watching T.V.
     “I’m finished.”  Lyla stated.
“Okay.”  Jay stood up, turning the T.V. off and grabbing his phone, “Do you have your permit?”
Lyla pulled her phone out of her pocket, opening her phone case and grabbing her permit, showing it to her dad.
“Okay.  Do you want to go start the truck and adjust your seat and everything while I tell Mom we’re leaving?”
“Sure.”  Jay nodded his head, grabbing his keys from the counter and tossing them to Lyla, who caught them easily.
“Tell her I love her.”  Lyla requested as she made her way out of the house, shutting the door behind her and heading to the truck.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyla exited the Walmart parking lot, making sure to look both ways and pay attention to her surroundings all the while vibing to music with her dad.
“Hey,”  Jay started, “Can you put something by Olivia Rodrigo on?”
If Lyla had been drinking water, she’d have spit it out at hearing that sentence.
“First of all, weird.  Second of all, I can’t be on my phone, remember?”
“Good.  You passed the test.”  Jay paused for a moment, “Wait, how is that weird?”
“How is the fact that my dad is obsessed with Olivia Rodrigo weird?  I have no clue.”  Lyla said sarcastically.
“Hey!  I’m not obsessed with her, I just like some of her songs.”
“Mhm sure.  Even if you weren’t obsessed with her, which you really are, it’s still weird.”
“Whatever.”  Jay pouted, Lyla cracking a smile.
That smile was replaced with a look of horror as she heard the song that started playing.
“Mummy don’t know daddy’s getting hot, at the bodyshop, doing something unholy.”
“What kind of-”  Jay started, but was cut off by Lyla.
“Skip this song.”  Lyla demanded, trying to hide just how horrified she was.
Jay thought for a moment, “No, I want to hear this one.”
     “No!  Skip the song!”
To Lyla’s horror, instead of skipping the song, Jay reached over and turned the volume up.
“Dirty dirty boy, you know everyone is talking on the scene, I hear them whispering bout’ the places that you’ve been, and how you don’t know how to keep your business clean.”
“Fucking Tik Tok.”  Lyla muttered as the chorus played.
“Huh.”  Jay started once the chorus was over and Kim Petra’s solo came on, “This song just gets better and better.”
“Please skip it now.”  Lyla begged, her cheeks red in embarrassment that her dad had just listened to Unholy.
Jay grabbed Lyla’s phone, pressing the skip button.
“Oh come on!”  Lyla exclaimed in annoyance as the next song played.
“She’s alright, that girl’s alright with me, yeah.”
Jay listened for a few moments before nodding his head, “Yeah, we’re having a talk with Mom when we get home.”
Lyla banged her head against the car seat, knowing that she probably wasn’t going to shuffle her Spotify playlist while her dad was in the car ever again.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*Finish*
I hope you liked this one!  Feel free to send me requests but know I might not actually write them depending on the prompt but idk.

"My daddy has to fight some bad guys". || Jay Halstead x reader and daughter
*re-posting this because I'm stupid and accidentaly delated my blog 🫠
Tumblr media
You woke up earlier than everybody in your house to get everything ready for everyone. Jay would usually follow you a few minutes later and you two would make breakfast and get your daughter ready for school together, along with other morning stuff. This wasn't the day, your husband had fallen asleep and you were doing everything by yourself, trying not to make a lot of noise. You knew he was working a tough case and had come back quite late from work the night before, so you didn't want to wake him up. Even when he didn't want to admit it, he was tired as hell and needed to rest.
You were in the kitchen starting to cook breakfast when you felt his arms hugging you from the back.
-"Did I wake you up?" You asked. -"I was trying not to".
-"I didn't feel you by my side and I couldn't fall asleep again". He answered into your ear and then kissed your neck as he continued talking. -"I'm sorry I haven't been around. We closed this case last night, what's left is a bunch of paperwork. My hope is to be back home early tonight and...". You turned around to hug him back and interrupted him with a short kiss. He rushed to finish his sentence with a heavy breathing : "...I can make it up for you", then proceeded to tenderly kiss your lips as he held you as tight as he could with one of his arms, while fervently holding your head with his other hand, finger all tangled in your hair, pulling it a bit.
Due to the case Jay was working on, you two had barely seen each other during the last week and a half, so things were heating up fast. Suddenly, for both of your displeasure, an alarm interrupted the moment.
-"Time to wake her up". You said having trouble separating from him.
-"I'll go". Jay took your phone to turn off the alarm. -"I'm driving her to school too".
-"Hey, Jay!" You took his hand before letting him leave the room. -"You do remember her Father's Day Festival, right?".
-"Next friday, 10:30, sure".
-"I was thinking...maybe you should talk to her and explain that...of course you will be there, but if you are not able to make it is due to your work".
-"But I will be there".
-"I know, I know, it's just...we never know when a case might pop up. Remember the Spring Festival?".
-"Oh. The bank robbery right before it...".
-"Yes, that's what I mean. That time was easy because I was there, but this time I won't...".
-"I will talk to her". He said after a few seconds of silence. -"But I'll be there, no matter what".
That day, Tessa and her class made a craft for their fathers. All the little kids were drawing in a small paper square that would become a keychain for Father's Day. Some of them were drawing hearts, others were doing stick figures. Tessa drew her dad carrying her over his shoulders and a bunch of hearts around. Her artwork was a little abstract, but understandable for a 5 year old.
-"All right". Ms. Luna said in a sweet voice. Tessa really loved her teacher. -"I am going to take your drawings and we will give them back to our dads as a key chain during the festival!".
-"My daddy said he will come, but he's working and if he doesn't show up it is because he has to fight some bad guys. Bad guys don't respect days or time". Tessa rushed to repeat what Jay tried to explain to her earlier in the morning when he was taking her to school.
-"It's ok". Her teacher laughed a bit. -"Sometimes parents can't make it and it's ok. That doesn't mean they don't want to or that they don't love us".
The class rehearsed the song they would sing at intervals throughout the rest of the day. Tessa never missed the opportunity to repeat the information going around her head: "My dad said he's coming, but if he's not here it means he's working" or "My daddy is fighting the bad guys and bad guys they don't respect days or time" or "He will be here, but if he's not here, that means he's on the streets. He makes Chicago safe". Her friends were amazed whenever she repeated those statements. She did understand what her father told her, but she didn't really comprehend.
The day was here. You dropped Tessa at school, she was all excited. Before she entered the building you reminded her: "If it happens that daddy is not here or he's late, remember he's fighting the bad guys".
Jay was already in the bullpen, everything was strangely calmed. He had talked with Voight about going out to Tessa's school and he gladly agreed.
-"Today is the day isn't it?" Hailey asked Jay as she entered the coffee room.
-"Yeah". He smirked. -"If nothing else intervenes".
-"Let's stay positive". She said remembering what had happened last Spring Festival.
It was 8:30, the day had just started when Trudy came upstairs with an urgent case.
-"That's just my luck". Jay said, rushing downstairs with his partner.
-"Let's try to make it quick". Hailey answered by putting on her coat.
At school, the kids were getting ready to go outside to start the festival. Parents were gathering outside of the building, waiting to get inside.
Students from all schools were lining up around the court. Their parents were supposed to meet them and be in front of their kid's group to hear them sing.
-"Is your dad here?" One of Tessa's friends asked.
-"I can't see him". She answered standing on tiptoe. -"But it's ok, it's because he had to fight the bad guys".
All the kids waved their fathers with excitement, some of them ran to hug them before starting the show. Jay didn't make it, but Tessa wasn't feeling bad about it...yet.
When the song finished, all the kids jumped into their fathers arms and gave them the craft they made in class as a gift for them. Tessa stood in her place, not being able to hold her tears. She was crying in silence, so between the noise and excitement around the little girl, nobody noticed her until a few minutes later. As soon as her teacher saw her, she ran towards her and hugged her tight.
-"It's ok, honey. It's ok. Your dad wanted to be here with you". She said in a very sweet and calmed voice. -"Remember he is fighting the bad guys, you said that before ''.
Some parents were moved watching the scene, but there was nothing they could do. Ms. Johnson, the school's principal, noticed the situation from afar and she joined as soon as she could. By only moving her lips, trying not to be heard, she asked Tessa's teacher if the little girl's father wasn't there. She shaked her head in disapproval when the teacher answered with a sorry face.
-"We can call your dad, Tess. That way you can hear his voice".
-"But, Ms. Johnson, he's fighting the bad guys". Ms. Luna intervened.
-"Oh!" She understood. -"Ok, but we can call him later, we'll tell him to come so you can give him your present. Would you like that?".
The little girl was an emotional mess, but agreed with her head, even though she wasn't really listening to what the adults were saying.
The emergency call for the intelligence team ended up in a shooting and that delayed detective Halstead. As soon as he finished with interviews and all the bureaucracy after this kind of situation, he ran off.
-"Go, go, go". Hailey rushed. -"I cover you".
Jay drove his truck as fast as he could, siren on. It wasn't a police emergency, but it was an emergency after all, he could deal with the consequences later. He parked in the first spot he found, even if it wasn't merely in front of the school and ran as fast as he could in a police mode to get to his baby girl. It was until he entered the building that he noticed he was still wearing the vest, gun and badge on his hip, but didn't care.
-"There he is!" Ms. Johnson pointed to Tessa's father.
-"Come on! Come on!" Ms. Luna took the little girl's hand and started running towards her dad.
-"I'm so sorry". Jay took Tessa in his arms and carried her holding her as tight as he could. She was too emotionally drained to react.
Kids around were already saying goodbye to their parents, going back to their classrooms.
-"We'll give you some time alone". Ms. Johnson informed Jay and he muttered a "thank you".
-"You can go back to the classroom when you feel ready". Ms. Luna told her student.
-"I hate the bad guys". Tessa managed to say when they were finally alone.
-"Me too". Her father said. -"I'm really, really sorry I didn't hear you sing, but I'm here right now". He wiped the tears from her cheeks.
-"I did it real good, you missed it". She said playing with the key chain in her hands.
-"I bet you did". Jay chuckled. -"What do you have there?".
-"It's a present for you. I made it for you". She extended her short arm to give it to her dad.
-"For me? Is it for my keys? I love it!"
-"It's you and me and lots of hearts. I drew it myself".
-"I can see that. It's beautiful. Thank you, sweetie". Jay's phone started ringing and he sighed when he read the text messages.
-"I have to go back to work".
-"But I don't want you to go". She started crying again.
Ms. Johnson came into the scene to help Tessa go back to her class" -"Daddy has to go back to work, sweetie. Ms. Luna and your friends are waiting for you, let's go". And she took her tenderly in her arms as her crying grew louder.
-"It's all right". Jay reassured her with a kiss. -"I love you. I'll see you at home, ok?". And she disappeared through the door.
He peeked through the classroom window to check on her before departing. He witnessed how Ms. Luna was successfully calming her down and felt a little bit more relaxed to go.
-"Thank you for coming". Ms. Johnson told him with a smile. -"For real".
With a heavy heart, he got into his truck and before turning it on, he hung the keychain in his keys. He inspected the tiny drawing and smiled before going back to the bullpen.
Thanks for reading. If you liked it, it would help my soul if you give it a ♡, comment or share. 😌♡

A/N: Hey hey, beautiful readers. Here is a request from @onechicagolovr Based on the song 'The Good Ones' by Gabby Barrett

--------
You knew he was different from the first time you interacted with him. Meeting by your friend Kim, who is on the same unit as your boyfriend. And quite frankly you had given up on love, plus you had other responsibilities that not many people would accept. But he was unique in his own way a truly loving soul and tonight proved it, yet again.
Almost 10 pm and your 2-year-old daughter Olivia or Livy was not in the mood to sleep. You had been bouncing her in your arms and signing softly but she is stubborn so of course, not working. -God, sleep is glorious, why don’t you wanna sleep?- you thought to yourself
“Please Livy, I really need a break” you whispered as she cried her little eyes out your were getting tired and frustrated.
Just as you were about to call it quits the front door of your house opened making you sigh in relief as Jay walked in a bouquet of flowers on his hand, walking over to you kissing you softly.
“Hi beautiful. Hey- what’s wrong?” his happy expression morphed into concern as he saw your teared up eyes still bouncing Livy as she started crying again.
“I need to tap out. Please” you whispered trying not to cry, but it was frustrating and kind of heart breaking to not be able to get your baby to sleep.
Jay immediately understood nodding his head and taking Livy from your arms. As started biting your nails nervously tears now rolling down your cheeks. Livy had tucked her face in his chest and snacking her little arms around his neck and you were grateful. So, so grateful that this man had taken the role of a father even though his blood didn’t run through her veins.
“Babe don’t cry” he said softly furrowing his eyebrows as his hand came to caress your cheekbone. He’s a good one for sure, which made you want to cry even more.
“I’m trying…I’m trying really hard” you breath out as you brushed the tears
“I know honey. Hey- I got her. Don’t worry. Take a breather” with that you went to the kitchen.
You busied yourself putting the dishes away. Not knowing how much time had passed when you only heard silence so you made your way back to the living room, confused. It was empty. As you were about to call for Jay a muffled voice and a set of giggles was heard from Livy’s room.
Coming to stand on the doorway your heart melted at the sight in front of you. Livy was fighting against sleep but it was clear sleep was winning. You chuckled into your hand as quietly as you could,
“My little angel” Jay said, loving eyes as he rested his head slightly on top of hers rocking her side to side
“Da-da” your heart stopped as you heard what your daughter had blabbered to Jay before she succumbed to sleep. You quietly looked at Jay, he hadn’t moved he only could beam.
“God, you’re killing me” he whispered before putting her in her crib pulling her blankie towards her. Pushing yourself off the doorframe you walked towards his hunched figure as he towered over Livy’s resting form. Wrapping your arms around his waist and kissing his shoulder blade which made Jay sigh draping his arms on top of yours while you both looked down at the little angel.
“God I love her. I’m so fucking grateful” he said in between chuckles, his gaze still locked on Livy as he smiled.
“She loves you more than you think, Jay. I love you” “I love you both”

You have a kid?!
Character: Will Halstead x Daughter!Reader, Jay Halstead
Warnings: Brief mentions of abandonment but that's kinda it.
Summary: After being gone for so long, Will finally shows up but with a girl by his side.
Lightly based on Season 2, Episode 17 Chicago PD but I changed it a little.
A/N: This is a first for me but I'm totally in love. Even if this doesn't get a lot of love, I'm going to be writing a lot more of Faith.
*****
Jay's problems had washed over. He no longer had a bounty on his head and things with him and Erin were decent. It wasn't the bestest of things to be hanging out with college kids who dumped waste onto politicians but at least none of the boys ended up being pushed from a hotel window, dead on top of a car.
"Hey chuckles." Trudy called out for Jay, her eyes not moving as she was immersed in punching holes into a bunch of papers.
"Detective chuckles if you don't mind." Jay smirked, coming forward and leaning his forearms against the front desk.
"Little donnybrook down at kitty o'shea's officer on the scene wanted to know if you'd stop by." Trudy went on, saying it as though she was bored and was more interested in her little task than talking to the younger detective.
"To do what? Show him how to do his job?"
"No, keep your brother from getting locked up."
And with just a tad bit of confusion and a little bit of being fed up, Jay was making his way out to have a word with his brother, totally oblivious to what he was walking into.
*****
Jay was more than prepared, stewing in his thoughts on the drive over so when he got out his car and was approaching the pavement, he came to a sudden stop, frozen in his steps.
There was his redhead brother, trying to talk to the only officer on the scene with a small girl no taller than his knees who for some reason shared the red locks of his brother and his deceased mother hiding behind Will's legs.
Maybe he was hallucinating-
"Ah! Detective Halstead, please talk to your brother." The officer turned around, looking at Jay in relief as he stepped away from Jay.
"What the hell happened?" Jay asked, authority laced in his words as he eyed the man sitting on the floor behind the officers feet but his hands weren't cuffed.
Will scoffed, shaking his head incredulously. "That bastard tried to take Faith, that's what happened!" He said, pointing at the bearded man on the floor who had no shame on his face whatsoever.
Faith? Jay thought to himself, he didn't know a Faith. But that was a thought for later because Will was accusing the man of attempted kidnapping.
"Attempted kidnapping? That's a serious offence officer, why don't you put some bracelets on him and chuck him into the back of your car." Jay suggested, looking the officer dead in the eye. "Go straight to the 21st and tell the desk sergeant Jay Halsteads dealing with him."
Without another word, the officer complied, slightly shaken from Jay's words.
Now that they were alone, Jay could finally talk to his brother. "Dude, who's Faith?"
Will smiled, a soft and genuine smile Jay hadn't seen since before their mother died which both confused him but he wasn't complaining either.
"Faith, you remember our stories about uncle Jay?" Will turned around, bending down so he was eye level with the girl. Only when she nodded, her toothy smile oddly resembling the smile Jay swore he knew from pictures their mother took when they were kids. "This is him honey."
Uncle? Honey? The two words flew around his mind in a whirlwind, feeling as though a tornado was messing up all his inner workings because none of this was making any sense.
It seemed that the name uncle Jay turned on a switch because the second Will mentioned it, the redheaded girls eyes, that was the same whiskey colour as her father's brightened up too fast to be humanly possible. She whipped around so fast, looking up at Jay with such a speed that he was concerned she'd gotten whiplash.
"Uncs Jay Jay!" She practically screamed with joy even with her very obvious lisp. Her arms went up in the air and before any attempt could be made to stop her, she launched herself towards the younger Halstead brother and wrapped herself around his legs, not able to reach any further.
Her giggles were so innocent and giddy and full of life, her chubby cheeks squished against his jeans as she mumbled nonsense to herself that Jay probably should've been listening to but he was still in shock.
"Alright kiddo, let Jay Jay go, we don't need him collapsing from shock." Will chuckled at his brother, prying his daughter away with minimal strength.
Faith gasped, her eyes wide as she immediately let go. All she wanted to do was hug him! She didn't mean to hurt him! Oh no, if she hurt her uncle then her dad would-
Will shook his head with a smile at his daughters very distraught face at the mere thought of hurting the man she'd heard so many stories about. She would never be able to live with herself if she was the reason Jay had to amputate both his legs, how would he keep the world safe from all the bad guys without legs!
"Jay Jay?" Jay reiterated, remembering the name he was called the day of his birth by Will but eventually, the name died out. Clearly, it hadn't been buried in its rightful casket since it was still being said all these years later.
Before Will could reply with some sort of an explanation, Jay's radio went off, the voice on the other side belonging to one of those from intelligence. Jay was brought back down to earth, blinking as he realised he was needed at work.
"Go do your thing." Will nodded, making sure he was holding Faith's hand as the two waved Jay away.
"Sabe de world please!" Faith shouted with a smile as Jay backed away to his car, her adorable lisp and poor pronunciation causing a smile to break out on the detectives face.
*****
Fast forward several hours later, Jay gave Will his address, work was finished, everyone had eaten and all they were doing was sitting in the sitting room, the two brothers nursing beers as the only girl Halstead giggled to herself, easily entertaining herself with the few toys she brought to Chicago with her.
"So..." Jay cleared his throat, taking a sip of his beer as he glanced at the three year old who sat cross-legged on his rug which now that he thought about it, he should give it a good clean.
"So?" Will replied, a smile on his face when he caught onto what Jay was silently indicating. "Just say the words man - Where'd this kid that looks just like you come from?"
"What happened man?" Jay asked, summing together all his questions in the three words. "Last I heard from you was that you were partying it up in New York with your surgeon stuff."
Will hummed because it was true. The last thing Will told his younger brother about his life was that it was all great which it definitely had been, but he forgot to mention the finer details.
"Four years ago, met this girl who was a nurse and we hit it off whatever." Will started, waving his hand as he mentioned the woman. "It was only one night and clearly lots happened but she left me out of the loop.
"Then, all of a sudden, nine months later there's a knock on my door and guess what?" Will asked rhetorically, not waiting for an answer as he carried on. "In a carrier is this baby girl with a tuft of red hair, a small card on her lap that said 'Her names Faith and she's definitely yours' that's it.
"Fast forward three years later and here we are." Will said with a warm smile, looking down at Faith as though she was the only thing that mattered in the world.
Finished with his story, Will rolled his eyes as Faith struggled to keep her eyes open, slouching as she slowly drifted off. Now that he took a good look at the time, it was well past her bedtime and for such a little girl, she was most definitely jet-lagged.
With little to not effort, Will lifted Faith into his arms, giving her time to shift around - snuggling her face into the crook of his neck, her small arms barely going around his torso with her legs wrapping around him tightly - she was basically his own koala.
"Who would've thought fatherhood would look so good on William Halstead?" Jay teased, smirking into the rim of his beer, watching his niece doze off in her father's arms.
"I'm still learning man." Will huffed with a smile. "The older she gets, the more attitude she gets and I'm already struggling to keep up with her now."
The two settled into a comfortable silence but there was one more question that Jay needed answering. "How long you in Chicago for?"
The lack of an answer from Will is what increased Jay's curiosity. For some reason, after their first meeting this morning, Jay had some hope that maybe his brother was coming back home but obviously, it was all false hope-
"Um, we're staying." Will announced, whispering so he wouldn't wake up Faith who was knocked off in a deep, deep sleep. He thought long and hard over this decision and it only seemed right, even if he was moving from the only home Faith ever knew.
"Your Faith's family and you've already missed her first three years - which is all my fault, I know." Will said, indirectly apologising for not introducing the uncle and niece earlier. "Her mother's never been in here and I doubt she ever will be. Besides me, your all she has."
His tone was solemn and there's clearly been tons of time behind his well thought out words. Jay might've been caught off by his older brothers confession but it struck a cord for him and after the day he had, it was just what he needed.
"Your kidding." Jay scoffed, brows furrowed in disbelief and slightly in denial that after all these years, his only sibling was coming back home with a new member of the family at his side.
"No kidding." Will shook his head, smiling at his brothers reaction. "Even got an interview lined up at an ED not too far from an apartment I'm interested in - Faith liked it more though, something about how on her tiptoes, she's tall enough to open all the doors."
"You stay here as long as you need man." Jay smiled, setting down his beer on the coffee table as he stood up, pushing his hands on his knees. "You wanna put her down on the guest bed?"
"Oh yes please, my arms going dead."

Title: A Day With Matt and Gabby
Age: 2
TW: none
A/N In this story, Gabby and Matt are married.
Jay's pov
Time 9:30 A.M.
Intelligence just caught a big case, so I am going to see if Catie can go to the firehouse asking. She would be at her daycare right now if half of it didn't burn down because of the restaurant beside it that caught on fire. I pull out my phone and look for Matts number and call him. It takes him about 3 rings before he answers, "Hey, what's up."We just caught a big case, and I need someone to watch Catie." I say. "Yeah, of course. Just bring her over to the firehouse." He says. I breathe a sigh of relief and say, "Alright, thank you so much. I'm sorry I would take her to her daycare, but you know."It's no problem, really. You and Catie are family, and we take care of family." Thanks again, bye," Bye," he says and hangs up. I waited for Voight to stop debriefing us, and when they were fixing to leave, I say. "Hey, I'm going to take Catie over to 51, and I'll meet you at the scene." He nods, and they head out. I walk into the break room, and Catie runs up to me and hugs my legs. "Daddy," She says. I walk around, grabbing her bag and her bear. As I say, "You want to go hang out with your aunts and uncles at the firehouse."Yeah, yeah, go see Aunt Gabby and Uncle Matt," she says while bouncing up and down, and I finish grabbing all her stuff, throwing her bag over my shoulder. I smile at how cute she is and walk over and pick her up, and we walk out to the car. I opened the back drives side door and put Caitlin in her car seat and buckled her in, and sat her bag beside her. I then got in myself and buckled. I started the drive to the firehouse, which isn't far from the district. I smiled as I listened to Caitlin quietly singing a song while looking out the window. When we got there, I texted Matt telling him we're here. A few minutes later, as I was getting Catie out of her car seat, Matt and a few others came out to see us. I grabbed her bag and walked over, and Matt took her bag and I say "If I'm not back when you're shift is over just take her back to your place and I'll pick her up there if that's okay." Yeah, that's fine. I'll text you when we leave so you know I'm home," he said. I nodded and looked at Catie, who was playing with the chain on my badge. I called her name and said, "Catie, I've got to go to work, so you're going to stay with Matt and the other firefighters, ok?" She nodded and said, "Otay, Daddy, wove you." I love you too," I said and kissed her forehead. I was going to pass her to Matt, but Gabby quickly reached out for her, so I handed her to Gabby then walked back to the truck to get her car seat, and handed it to Matt. I said bye to everyone, then got in my car and drove to meet up with intelligence.

Time skip 1:30 P.M.
We just finished lunch and are cleaning the dishes when we get called out to a scene. It's nothing major. A kid just got his head stuck in the railing of a staircase. We got him out, and he was fine. Catie was standing on the side of the firetruck with Cap, watching us help the kid, and I could catch certain things that he was saying to her. With what I heard him say, I quickly figured out he was explaining what we were doing. We quickly finished up, and Gabby and Sylvie took the boy and his mother to med to look at the small cut on the boys neck while the rest of us headed back to the firehouse. When we got back, I took Caitlin up to the sleeping quarters. I grabbed her blanket and her police bear out of her bag. I really need to get her a firefighter bear. I sit down on one of the beds with her in my arms. She has one arm holding onto my shirt, and her bear tucked safely in her arms. I start softly humming so she'll fall asleep for her nap. I give her about 30 minutes to fall asleep fully before I lay her down on the bed and cover her with her blanket, her bear still in her arms. I set an alarm on my phone for 30 min to go and check on her.
Time skip
Caitlin woke up an hour after I layed her down for a nap. When she woke up, we played some, and we had a few calls, but now it's time to go back home.
Time skip 5:30 - 8:30 P.M.
While I get all her stuff together, Gabby takes her and puts her in the car. When I finish grabbing all her stuff, I walk out to the car and get in, and we head to my apartment. I already texted Jay and told him we are headed home, and he said alright. When we get home, we get out and go inside. Once we get inside, Caitlin is looking around at everything. She looks at the pictures in the living room. She walks into the halway, so I follow her so she doesn't get hurt, and Gabby goes into the kitchen to make dinner. She gets to the end of the hall where my bedroom is along with the guest bedroom and bathroom. The laundry room is at the beginning of the hallway. She turns into the guest bedroom and starts to look around until she spots a few pictures of different people. People from Med, PD, and Fire. She ran over and stopped just far enough so she could see them. I picked her up and walked closer so she could see them. She looked at them all with a big smile. After she looked at all the pictures and asked a lot of questions, she started squirming, trying to get down. I put her down, and she ran out into the kitchen. I laugh and shake my head and follow after her. I sit her bag on the kitchen counter. Caitlin comes over and reaches for her bag. I picked her up and sat her on my lap. I opened her bag, and she reached in and grabbed her small bag of toys. She opened it up and grabbed out a few toys, and handed me some, and we started playing. We played for a couple of minutes, and Gabby said, "Dinners ready. Matt, can you get the plates and silverware, please," Yeah, Catie, do you want to help me," I ask before standing up she nods and I sit her down on the floor and she runs into the kitchen. She gets distracted by the pictures hanging on the fridge. She pointed at one and said, "Dat you and Daddy," "Yeah, and who's your Daddy holding," I asked, looking at her with a smile as she looks at the picture. "Me," she says excitedly. "Yeah, that was your first birthday. When you had your first birthday, your dad made sure you got a picture with everyone so he could give to them as a thank you." I said. I glanced up and saw Gabby staring at us with a smile. "You have one, too, Gabby," Catie asked her. "I do, and if you look in the background of mine, you can see your uncle Will making a face." Gabs said as she made a weird face, and Caitlin laughed. I grabbed the plates and the silver wear, and we sat down to eat. After dinner, Gabby headed off to take a shower, so I took Caitlin in the living room, and we played with her toys till Gabby got out and when she did we switched me getting a shower and her playing with Catie. After I got out of the shower, we sat on the couch and started watching a movie. About halfway through the movie, we could tell Catie was getting tired because she wouldn't let herself sit still, so Gabby grabbed her blanket and bear and took her into the guest bedroom and stayed with her till she fell asleep then went to bed herself.
Time skip 12:30 A.M.
I stayed up a little while watching whatever was on TV waiting for Jay to come pick her up. It's a good thing I don't have work today. When I got a text from him saying, "Sorry I'm texting you so late I thought I could get off soon but it looks like this case is going to run late so I will just pick her up tomorrow."It's fine. I don't have work tomorrow. She's been great. I had no problems getting her to take a nap, and she's asleep right now." I reply. "Good I was worried she would fight you on nap time. She loves bedtime but nap time is a whole different story." He said I looked up when I heard the floorboard creak and saw Caitlin with her bear in her hand rubbing her eyes. I stand up and walk towards her I crouch in front of her and ask, "What's wrong." "I had a bad dream." She said which mad me take notice of the tears stains on her face. "Do you want to talk about it." I asked. She shook her head and said, "Nuh-uh, I want my daddy." I pick Caitlin up and walk back to the couch and sit down with her in my lap. I text Jay and ask if he's on break. He replies, "yeah why is something wrong." "No nothings wrong Catie just had a nightmare and wants to see you." I replied, and about 2 minutes later, I got a FaceTime notification from Jay and I answered it. As soon as Caitlin saw him, her eyes lit up, and she smiled. "Daddy," She said. "Hi baby, you ok." Uh-huh, I miss you." I miss you too." I sat there and let them talk for about 20 minutes till Jay said, "Catie I've got to go back to work ok I'll see you later. Goodnight." Okay, goodnight love you." Love you too baby," Jay said before the call ended. I looked at Catie and said, "why don't you sleep with me and Gabby huh." Ok." I stand up with Catie in my arms and walk into my room and lay her in between me and Gabby and wait for her to fall asleep before falling asleep shortly after.
Time skip 8:30 - 10:30 A.M.
We all woke up 30 minutes ago and we are eating breakfast. Jay said he'd be here at 10:30, so we have an hour before he gets here. We have been playing for awhile now Jay just texted me and said he is on his way so Gabby and I are cleaning up Caitlin's toys with a little help from Caitlin. We finished picking up her toys and are now sitting on the couch when there's a knock. I open the door and see Jay I let him come in.
Jay's pov
I walk inside the apartment and Matt leads me to where Caitlin was. When she saw me, "Daddy, "she squealed and ran towards me. I crouched down, and she ran into my arms. I picked her up, and walked into the living room to say hi to Gabby we talked for about 20 minutes until I decided to take Caitlin back home. I have the rest of the week off so I'm going to spend time with Caitlin.

The sound of the diner door rang through Cassie's ears snapping her out of her trance.
Looking down at the warm coffee she's had her hands cupped around for the last twenty minutes she frowns as she realizes it's grown cold.
"Hey, sorry I'm late." Jay says sliding into the booth across from Cassie.
"Hi, no you're good. No worries," She says with a small smile looking at the man.
For the last five months Jay and Cassie have spent every morning in this diner. Talking, sitting, bonding. Ever since the night Jay found Cassie, he's refused to leave her alone. He's vowed to never let Cassie get to the point again, and if she does it would have to be over his dead body.
It took awhile for Cassie to understand why he would care about her so much. Why he put so much effort into making sure she was okay, but eventually she quit asking questions and let him in.
"Do you want to grab a coffee?" Jay asks as he clicked Cassie's floor in the elevator.
"Uh, yeah, I'd like that. But um, how did you know what floor my apartments on?" Cassie asked skeptically looking at Jay.
"Oh, I didn't. I guess we live on the same floor." Jay says with a shy smile.
Cassie followed Jay out of the elevator confused again when he stops outside her apartment.
"Okay, this is getting weird Jay." She says chuckling and nervously rubbing the back of her neck.
"What? Why? This is me," He said unlocking the door to the apartment across from hers.
Rolling her lips into a line out of embarrassment, she pointed at her apartment door and muttered, "This is me..." Earning a snicker from Jay.
Eventually ending up in a small diner down the street from their building, they were both relieved when they saw the 'Open 24 hours' sign in the window.
"So, what were you doing up there?" Jay finally asked taking a sip of his coffee.
Met with silence he took a breath before continuing, "Look, I told you why I went up there. But you never told me why you were there." He said looking at Cassie.
Biting her lip, she didn't even know where to begin.
"Can we start with something else?" She asks looking back at him.
"Of course."
"I'm a paramedic at firehouse 51,"
"I thought you were a cop?"
"Used to be," Cassie said with a smile repeating what she said before. "How'd you figure that out anyway?"
"Glock 19. Most cops use that as their sidearm. Lucky guess." Jay said smiling back at her.
"Are you a cop?" Cassie asked curiously
"Detective. I work in organized crime over at the 21st."
"Ah. I didn't really make it past the patrolman stage over at the 31st." Cassie said with a sigh.
"But you're a paramedic now?"
"Yes, figured the education could be useful and then I fell in love with the rush. I just don't think I'm made for the streets." Cassie admitted finishing her coffee.
"I bet you'd thrive as a detective in a special unit. Not very many cops enjoy uniform."
After deciding that ordering food would be a good choice, Cassie and Jay continued talking and getting to know each other. But Cassie knew what she needed to tell him.
"I was up there because I ruined everything." Cassie started immediately hooking Jay's attention.
"I just fuck everything up, and I guess I couldn't handle it anymore. I convinced myself that the world would be better off without me..." Cassie said tearing up again, flinching a little when Jay placed his hand over her's.
Once Cassie explained everything that's happened, she felt relieved that she was able to open up to someone. That she didn't have to bottle it up and keep to herself. But when she looked up and saw the very prominent look of pity plaguing Jay's face all of the horrible feelings rushed back.
"This was a mistake." Cassie admitted quickly getting up.
Following her, Jay threw some money down on the table and basically chased her out of the diner.
"Cassie! Wait!" He said getting a little dejavu from just a few hours before.
"Jay, I'm broken. I've ruined everything, and there's nothing anyone can do to fix it. I'm lost cause just let me go." Cassie said stopping on the sidewalk turning around to face him.
"If you want me to let you go, why did you turn around to spare my feelings?" He asked confusing her.
"What?"
"If you truly felt like you were a lost cause, you would've kept walking. You wouldn't have stopped and turned around to tell me to let you go. You would've ran." He says stepping closer to her frozen figure.
"Let me help you. We're friends now, whether you like it or not. Im not leaving you in the dust... Let me help you." He says again now reaching for her hand.
Taking a shaky breath, Cassie had no more fight in her. It was either this, or death. And she knew she couldn't choose the latter.
Muttering a quiet, 'okay', Cassie took Jay's hand and sobbed into his shoulder once he pulled her in.
*Present Day*
"How've you been?" Jay asked thanking their waitress as she set down his usual.
"I've been okay. I guess my dad is getting out of prison soon. Everyone at the firehouse is mad at me." Cassie said sighing and stirring some sugar into her cold coffee.
"That's not your fault though? Why are they blaming you?" Jay asked making her smile.
"Exactly my thoughts." She admitted.
"How are things going with your undercover thing at Molly's?" Cassie asks earning a knowing look from Jay.
"You know I can't tell you, but I feel bad for Gabby. I hate going behind her back like this." Jay says getting an eye roll from Cassie.
"But in the end you're helping her. Everything with this Arthur guy will be over and she'll have her bar back. I think she'll get over it." Cassie says diverting her attention to her phone which pinged with a text. A text from Erin.
Frowning and picking up her phone, she looked back at Jay who waved her off.
"Go. If you need anything, reach out. Love you Cas." Jay says standing with her and giving her a brief hug.
"Will do, love you too." Cassie said with an eye roll and exiting the diner.
To say Cassie had anxiety would be an understatement. She hasn't talked to Erin in over 6 months, and now she's reaching out. Cassie replied to her first message as she left the diner, but nothing prepared her for Erin's response.
Erin: "I'm at your apartment. Where are you?"
Cassie: "On my way. Had a breakfast with a friend. 3 minutes out, sit tight?
Erin: "I let myself in."
Cassie never bothered to take the notes off her kitchen island. They were reminders as to why she stayed. If Erin found those...God, Cassie really hoped she hadn't.
"Hey," Cassie announced as she walked into her apartment with her voice immediately trailing off at the sight.
Freezing in her doorway, she was starting to feel the same exact way she did when she last saw him. Trembling and on the verge of collapsing.
"Cassidy." She heard as she watched the man she once considered her father turn around, with a paper in hand. Jeez where was Jay when she needed him.
"I uh, I thought you weren't getting out for another few days..." Cassie managed to say as she got herself to move. Slowly walking over to her kitchen island, where two of the five notes were opened. Shakily setting her keys down on the countertop, she looked up finally seeing Erin.
"Got out on good behavior. I guess it could be considered the easy way out. You know how that works, don't you?" Her father asked raising the note in his hand slightly to show he was using it as an example. He was using her weakness against her.
Cassie, visibly shaking now, turned her attention back to Erin who was wiping tears from her eyes. Yeah Cassie wasn't going to be able to get through this sober. Turning around quickly and grabbing the bottle of liquor she hasn't touched since the night she wrote those notes, she quickly got the cap off and drank straight from the bottle.
"Cassie, it's 11 a.m," Erin said finally speaking up.
"Well. It's 5 o'clock somewhere." Cassie said chuckling and taking another drink. Finally setting the cap-less bottle on the counter, Cassie made her way out of the kitchen and into her living room.
"If either of you would like a drink, help yourselves. You're pretty good at that right? Helping yourselves?" Cassie asked almost furiously and sitting on her couch. She did not do all this work for the last 5 months for it all to go down the drain the second they come back. Jay would be proud right?
"What are you doing?" Hank finally asked as he watched his daughter.
"Waiting for the lecture." She said sighing and earning a scoff from both of them.
"Cassidy, what the hell is this?" He finally asked grabbing one of the chairs and sitting it across from Cassie who's on the couch.
"A letter." She said belching and looking over to Erin who hasn't moved.
"Come sit. We're having a family reunion, or just reunion since I'm not considered family."
"Cassie, if you need help why didn't you reach out." Erin said finally walking over to them.
"I was told that I actually wasn’t allowed to do that.” Cassie said pressing her lips into a line.
“Do not play that card. You know if you ever needed help, we would’ve been there in a heartbeat.” Her father said sternly.
“Yeah. Right. Also those are from a few months ago, so if you guys had a plan to try and talk me off the brink of suicide, you're a little too late." Cassie said a matter of factly with a shrug.
“Cassie this isn’t some joke, you need help.” Erin said earning a scoff from Cassie.
“You know what? Screw you guys. You do not just get to break into my apartment, dig into my personal belongings, and then lecture me about how i’ve lived my life since you’ve been out of it.” Cassie now said with tears running down her face.
“You’re right. We’re sorry.” Is all her father said on the matter leaving an uncomfortable silence between the three of them.
Rolling her eyes at his apology Erin moves to sit next to Cassie. Taking a breath, Erin touches the side of Cassie’s face, wiping a tear out from under her eye.
“We shouldn’t have opened the letters. It was an invasion of privacy and we had no right. But Cassie, the world would not be a better place without you.” Erin says crying completely now.
“Cassidy. I love you more than words would ever be able to describe. You’re a spitting image of your mother and that scares me. Especially after she passed, the way you talk, the way you dress, even the way you style your hair is just like Camille. I was a coward, and I shut you out. I dove head first into work. I expected too much from you, and I’m sorry. You were right about Justin, he did need help, and you opened my eyes. We came here to apologize, Cas. I would’ve came sooner but I figured with me in prison and you needing time…I thought it would be better this way. You will always be apart of this family if you like it or not. Family does not turn their backs on each other, and I did just that. It was wrong.” Trailing off with his words Cassie’s father hangs his head in shame. Cassie has never seen her father cry, and probably never will. But this is pretty close to it.
“I can’t just forgive you guys like that.” Cassie admits stubbornly. “But I appreciate the apologies.” She adds again looking at the ceiling.
“That’s fine. It’s a start. How about you come over for Sunday dinner?” Erin asks combing Cassie’s hair with her fingers again.
“So you don’t feel left out, we haven’t had it in a few months. With Justin and I locked up…” Hank trails off looking at his daughters.
“I’d like that.” Cassie says taking a breath. She never thought she’d see the day they made up. Hell, the Cassie 5 months ago never thought she’d see any day again. But thanks to Jay, she’s still here. Alive and well. Shit, Jay. She’s really going to have to fill him in tomorrow.
The next few shifts at the firehouse were bearable. Yeah the silent treatments and the whispers were a little annoying, but what was she going to do? Her father is her father, she can’t hate him forever. Sorry Casey.
“How are they allowing him back out on the streets, let alone allowing him to run a special unit for the CPD? He’s a dirty cop, and he’s dangerous. He hates Antonio yet tried to recruit him for this and-”
“Gabby, there’s nothing I can do. If anyone hates him it’s me, trust me. But there’s nothing we can do.” Is all Matt says in response.
“I don’t know how Cassie can just let him back in her life like that though. He put you through hell-”
“Sorry Gabby, but i’m not going to never talk to my father again just because he had a fight with Matt Casey.” Cassie interrupts walking into the locker room.
“Well it was more than a fight, he harassed Matt for weeks,”
“And how do you think he treated my ex boyfriends? The man will do anything for his kids, even if it isn’t the right thing. I get that he put you through hell Matt, I really do and I’m sorry. But I did my time. I didn’t have any contact with my family for 6 months while I stood by you with that report, so sue me for eventually making up with my father. Now I would appreciate it if the whispers, and looks of resentment or pity would end, and you guys would stop having my families name in your mouth.” Cassie says leaving the other two in the locker room flabbergasted as she walked out.
The next day when Cassie was off shift and meeting Jay for their daily coffees, to her surprise Jay was there before her.
“Good-morning sunshine, you’re not late today!” Cassie congratulated as she slid into the booth across from Jay.
“Gabby’s not happy with you.” Is all he says with a sly smirk making Cassie roll her eyes.
“Oh boy!” She says with fake enthusiasm as she thanks the waitress for her coffee.
“Yep. Gabby also found out i’ve been undercover this whole time.” He admits anxiously looking at Cassie.
“Oh. You really like her, huh?”
“You jealous?”
“Absolutely not.” Cassie says unconvincingly as she sips her coffee.
“I have to meet Arthur in an hour, I’m hoping this will be the last time and I’ll be able to get a confession for the Game Day fire.” Jay says like he’s stalling.
“That’s good.” Cassie hums skeptically, not really caring about this whole undercover operation anymore.
“But Cas, um, your father reached out to me.” Jay finally admits catching Cassie’s attention for real now.
“Oh? What did he want?” Cassie asked suspiciously.
“He said you mentioned me. Said that made him look into my background and he wants to recruit me for this Intelligence Unit he’s starting at my district.” Jay says with his eyes not leaving Cassie’s.
“Wow, that’s, good? That’s an upgrade from organized crime right?” Cassie asks not sure if Jay is happy or not.
“Yeah, yes. It is.”
“Are you going to do it?”
“I don’t know. Should I? I mean, I don’t know much about him as a cop besides rumors and what you’ve said.” Jay admits mindlessly stirring his coffee.
“He’s a good cop, he’s cleaned his act up since he went away from what I know. I know that he closes cases and puts the bad guys away. I don’t know much about his strategy, but I think it would be a good opportunity.” Cassie says honestly wanting the best for Jay.
“Okay. I’ll think about it some more. I have another question though,”
“Shoot.”
“What did you say about me?”
“Well, this last Sunday we had our first family dinner in God knows how long. I told him how you helped me get better. That you’re the only reason I’m still here today and that I value our friendship a lot.” Cassie said placing her hand on Jay’s on their table.
“You’re my best friend, Cas. You know that right?” Jay says with a smile.
“Oh don’t get all gushy on me, Halstead. But you’re my best friend too.” Cassie says with a reassuring nod at the man in front of her.
