some nature wives wedding hcs (courtesy of the nature wives discord)

sausage started planning the wedding the day he learned shelby liked katherine. he and tortoise coordinated the actual wedding and argued over the colour scheme (sausage wanted green and pink, tortoise wanted blue and purple). they finally agreed on lavender and sage green.

fwhip made their rings, and shelby enchanted them so that the wearers can communicate through them.

katherine made her own wedding dress. she also designed shelby’s outfit (a suit embroidered with flowers), but she needed help adjusting it since katherine didn’t want to actually see her in it. luckily, scott knows a thing or two about sewing.

gem is katherine’s maid of honour (she actually woke up for the occasion), tortoise is shelby’s best man

pix officiates the wedding.

lizzie is the ring bearer. fwhip makes a joke like “ring bearer? i thought she was a cat!” she refuses to speak to him for the rest of the wedding.

hermes is the flower girl.

during the “speak now or forever hold your peace” bit, joey jokingly starts to stand up to object. sausage pulls him down. only shelby laughs.

for their first dance, oli performs a ballad he wrote for them. it’s twenty minutes long. he had to be dragged off the stage so he wouldn’t start another number.

A Roman Tiny Tortoise Figurine Found in England

In July last year, a small Roman copper alloy tortoise or turtle figurine was discovered by metal detectors near the village of Wickham Skeith in Suffolk, England.

There is no exact date, but experts date it to the early 2nd century AD, as a similar example was unearthed in settlement layers dating to around 100-400 AD during excavations in the Roman city of Colchester.

At just over one inch long and just under one inch wide, the figurine’s body is shaped like a typical turtle/tortoise shell, sub-circular in plan and D-shaped in section. While the top of the shell is very worn, it appears to have once been decorated with two sets of crescent-shaped grooves, positioned on either side of the midpoint. The figurine has a crudely shaped head protruding from the apex of the shell, and four feet projecting from the sides. The left forelimb seems to have been broken away some time ago, leaving only a short stump. There is also a small tail on the lower edge. The underside of the shell is flat and does not appear to have been decorated.

Tortoises or turtles were most often associated with the god Mercury in the Roman world and Mercury is often found accompanied by turtles/tortoises in iconography. Mercury was the god of commerce, communication and travellers. A possible reason for the association with Mercury was that tortoise shells were used for making lyres, stringed musical instruments used in antiquity, the invention of which is attributed to Mercury in mythology. It may have been associated with Sabazios, too, a god of the Phrygians and Thracians.

Metal detectorists who report their finds to the Finds Recording Team have resulted in an increasing corpus of Roman turtle/tortoise figurines in recent years. Several similar figurines have also been recorded in Suffolk, near Barking, and near Little Blakenham by the Portable Antiquities Scheme over the years.

The wee tortoise was reported to the Suffolk Finds Liaison of the Portable Antiquities Scheme for documentation and has now been returned to the finder.

The Portable Antiquities Scheme is an initiative to encourage the recording of archaeological objects found by members of the public in England and Wales.

Shelbys the more passive protector while Kathrines, the more aggressive protector

Like it's just- it's like, Shelby takes precautions to STOP bad stuff from happening while Katherine takes the action afterwards. Does that make sense?

Ancient Tortoise and Her Egg Discovered in Pompeii

When Mount Vesuvius erupted nearly 2,000 years ago Pompeii's ancient residents were frozen in place by ash.

So too it turns out were the city's flora and fauna - including a pregnant tortoise with her egg.

Archaeologists found the reptile's remains buried under ash and rock where it had lain undiscovered since 79AD.

The tortoise was sheltering beneath an already-destroyed building when volcanic disaster struck.

Archaeologists found the remains while excavating an area of the city that its ancient inhabitants had been rebuilding after an earlier earthquake devastated Pompeii in 62AD.

Around 2,000 years ago the 14cm (5.5in) tortoise had burrowed into a tiny underground lair beneath a shop destroyed in that earlier quake.

Experts say the fact it was found with an egg suggests it was killed while trying to find somewhere peaceful to lay its offspring.

Oxford University archaeologist Mark Robinson, who discovered the remains of another tortoise at a nearby Pompeii site in 2002 said there were two explanations for how the reptile had got there.

"One is that it is a pet tortoise that possibly escaped and made its way on to what were the ruins of the great earthquake," he said.

A likelier possibility is that it was a tortoise from the nearby countryside that had wandered into the ancient city, he said.

"Pompeii was substantially wrecked and not everywhere could be rebuilt after the earthquake. The flora and fauna from the surrounding countryside had moved into the town."

Experts say the discovery illustrates the richness of Pompeii's natural ecosystem in the period after the earthquake.

"The whole city was a construction site, and evidently some spaces were so unused that wild animals could roam, enter and try to lay their eggs," said Pompeii's director general, Gabriel Zuchtriegel.

One visitor to Pompeii, a Finnish PhD student who happened to be passing by the site when the discovery was made, described what he saw as "spectacular."

"They had just removed the shell of the animal, so what was visible was the skeleton and the egg," Joonas Vanhala said. "It was a light-brown, sandy colour."

"I wouldn't have recognised it as an egg if they hadn't told me," he added.

!!spoilers for shubbles finale (sorta?)!!

Watched the vod for shubbles empires finale lore stream and I refuse to believe tortoise is dead 10 years later.

So HC that he is a human cursed to be a frog but is just chill w/ it. He has a human lifespan in a toad body.

To add on to that I like to think shelbys grandma cursed him to be a frog like, years ago or smthn but he's not mad anymore they're just besties <3 it's also why he tells her grandma everything, it's just the weekly talk over tea or somethin. Or maybe she just sees through his eyes idk.

Either way he totally mentions her huge crush on katherine and laments how much of a disaster she is.

ALSO it's mentioned how Shelby stays in the evermore for a year after empires ends so I like to think the idea of tortoise accidentally becoming human still happens In that year.

Maybe I'll draw this all later,,, my empires brainrot does not seem to be leaving anytime soon
