friendly reminder that it’s not cool to call actresses ugly just because you dislike their character! for example, we all hate sammi slott, as we were supposed to, meaning that emily bergl played her role well. emily bergl is a beautiful woman and she didn’t actually do anything that sammi did, it’s a role. and emma kenney is a wonderful actress who began playing debbie gallagher in 2010, when she was a literal kid. she’s so talented and her acting was phenomenal for someone so young, she is also beautiful. calling emma kenney ugly or disliking her for debbie’s actions is so stupid. she didn’t write the script or the character. these women are both beautiful:

Carmy Berzatto/Jeremy Allen White
Bro I am unwell over this man, he’s exactly 364 days older than me so I kinda grew into adulthood with him, whilst watching him as Lip and not feeling him that much in the beginning with a little attraction in later seasons as we both got older and he really started looking like a man. (I’ve never been interested in anyone who looked young, even if they’re older than me)
When The Bear came out, I was so excited because bears are my favorite animals/beings of all time but then was skeptical when I learned about the premise because shows never get it right when depicting what working in a kitchen is like so I didn’t want to be disappointed. I’ve since been proven wrong 😍 now I’m binge watching it lmao ** Note, I did not think the show was going to be about bears, it was just a biased interest based on name and actor lmao
Thanks to @queers-gambit I came across some Carmy fics through her own (which was so delicious and angsty, oh my GOD) and then read alllllllll of @nolita-fairytale’s Surrender series in like 2 days. Which, holy fuck and feels!!!! I loved seeing them go from haters to besties and finally lovers who end up married with the cutest lil babe 🥹 then @thebearer with her Berzatto family, it’s too much!!!!
But I was googling Emma Kenney after seeing an interview about Emmy and Jeremy was part of the suggested results and there were new paparazzi photos of him on a walk with a buddy but y’all…. Homie has his nails painted. Oh my god, I want to SCREAM!!!!
This could sound dumb, oh well but I fucking love when men are so anti toxic masculinity that they can just be
And even tho the paps suck and I’m sure he hates them, seeing these photos made me think of dad!Carmy letting his babes paint his nails cause they like the way it looks and don’t see any reason daddy can’t also have pretty nails. Idk, could be some cute fic fodder 👀👀 but mostly I just felt like everyone needed to see this lol
He’s so fucking cute

Do you ever feel like your government is actively working to institute a theocracy right under your very nose, and all anyone can seem to do is tweet? (I’m not knocking the art of the well-placed tweet, by the way. Case and point the account pictured above.)
Here’s what’s going on in my part of the world, which is Alberta (Commonly known as the bible belt of Canada):
The recently elected UCP (United Conservative Party #UnderHisEye) has, by its inaction, effectively canceled a work group dedicated to eradicating the insidious and abusive practice of “reparative” therapy for LGBT+ persons. Minister of Health Tyler Shandro has claimed on twitter that he told the group they were welcome to continue meeting. However, according to Emma Graney of the Edmonton Journal, his office released a statement that “The working group has disbanded with the change in govt.” AKA, they’re pretending the group (which included a survivor of conversion therapy) doesn’t merit focus because conversion therapy/torture “doesn’t happen here.”
If you dig a little deeper, you’ll see this simply isn’t true. Of course, nobody is coming right out and calling their services conversion therapy. That would be bad PR. The practice is couched in the language of soul-searching, healing trauma, and respecting individual faith. Alberta survivor Kevin Schultz was undergoing private faith-based counseling to realign his sexual orientation as late as 2007. Journey Canada, formerly Living Waters, which claims to help folks “experience Jesus in their sexuality” (kinky?) still operates across Canada.
If anyone is in doubt, the Human Rights Campaign and the Canadian Psychology Association can shed light on why conversion therapy/counseling of any kind is deeply damaging and can even be life-threatening.
The previous NDP government at least gave the appearance of caring about the LGBT community. The UCP gives the appearance of wanting to give the appearance of caring. In any case, I kind of wonder, why not just oh I don’t know BAN CONVERSION THERAPY AS IF WE WERE A CIVILIZED 21ST CENTURY SOCIETY? The UCP certainly hasn’t shied away from taking bold action on controversial issues (eg. lowering minimum wage for minors like a bunch of literal cartoon Scrooge McDucks).
This conversion therapy fustercluck is one move in an alarmingly swift series of policy change plans the UCP has begun rolling out since April of this year. They have also pledged to remove key protections afforded to GSA’s (Gay-Straight Alliances, common “safe space” organizations for LGBT students found in secondary schools). This means teachers could, at their own discretion, be permitted to notify parents if their child joins a GSA. This would obviously defeat the whole purpose of GSA’s and put children at greater risk of abuse at home.
When urged to consult experts on why this was such a monumental mistake, and questioned about the purpose of his party’s decision, premier Kenney had this to say:
"I think it would be very rare [for parents to be notified]," Kenney said. "Probably only [when] dealing with very young kids or kids with unique emotional and mental health challenges."
AKA, he has no idea what the repercussions could be and is speaking in “likelihoods” like some kind of fiendish gremlin under a bridge, desperate to grant you three wishes whose loopholes will ruin your life. (PS: Back in 2006 Kenney bragged about working to repeal a spousal law that allowed gay men to visit their dying partners in the hospital during the AIDS crisis. So that’s the attitude we’re dealing with here.)
If you’re curious about what other draconian policies the UCP has lurking just around the corner you can read up on their full platform, which includes such gems as scrapping the carbon tax, pausing the K-12 curriculum review, pushing for more private health care options, and something ominously called the “climate war room.”
If you, like me, are having some serious Handmaid’s Tale flashbacks right now, you’re not being overdramatic. The erosion of minority and women’s rights at the hands of backsliding democracies worldwide is not some fad. It’s a real thing that is happening all around us while shiny apps are being pelted at us as a distraction.
So let’s move on to what can actually be done. Before I list some ideas, I want to cover a few key points. We’re often advised, as constituents of a district or riding, to take action by writing to our political representatives! Here’s why I think that’s a waste of time: the current political climate is extremely polarized. It’s a buzzword because it’s true. If your MLA is conservative, and you write them a letter urging them to see things your bleeding-heart liberal way... well, why would they care? You’re not even a part of the voter base they’re targeting, and they know it. They don’t need your support. Alberta voters skew overwhelmingly right-wing already.
My advice is to follow the money.
A PAC (Political Action Committee) is an organization that pools campaign contributions from members and donates them to campaigns for or against candidates or legislation. Shaping Alberta’s Future is a PAC whose stated aim is to promote a conservative Alberta with Kenney at the helm. In 2018, they raised a whopping $170,000 in two weeks to fund UCP ads. Their financial disclosure documents are pretty lengthy and can be confusing if you don’t know what you’re looking for. That’s why I’ve broken down the info into a list of the major 5-figure contributors, all (you’ll be bowled over with shock to learn) men, most of them members of the Motor Dealership of Alberta for some reason.
For those of us who live in Alberta/Canada, that means we can do the following:
HERE is a link to a form letter addressing major donors to Shaping Alberta’s Future, politely urging them to bring matters of LGBT youth safety to the government’s attention.
HERE is a link to a list of specific donors, their contact information, and contribution amounts. This info can be filled into the indicated sections on the above letter.
Simply print, sign, and mail the letters to the addresses provided. Postage should be fairly inexpensive but if it’s an issue, take a photo of your signed letter and Canada Post receipt and I’ll etransfer you the value of your postage (within reason, guys!). If you can’t access Google drive, I’ll copy the letter to you by whatever method you prefer.
If you’d like to add information to the above list, or offer a correction, please message us or email
[email protected].
Additional things you can do (from anywhere):
Spreading the word always helps. Set up an email list or reddit thread. If you’re Albertan, print ten extra letters and ask a few friends to sign them. Pride month is just around the corner: bring a sheaf of letters with you to a parade and throw them in the air like confetti. (You’ll probably get some free condoms for your trouble; nice!)
Donations are not possible for everyone but if they’re possible for you, Youthsafe.net has a list of organizations that could use your support.
Stay vigilant. Read full articles covering both sides of the issues you’re investigating, and investigate in turn the veracity of your sources. Read posts from people you don’t agree with and, as infuriating as it is to have your person-hood invalidated by pseudo-scientific doctrine, pause to digest other points of view before formulating a vitriolic response. I’m not advising moderation (fuck moderation) but I am advising strategy.
Pursue local involvement. It’s tough to sit in front of a news cast in rural Canada and watch women in Alabama have their reproductive rights stripped from them, knowing a small donation to the ACLU is probably the most you can do short of upending your life to go on a march, and that won’t even move the needle much. But everyone, everywhere where voting happens, can march into a town hall and make their voice heard when it comes to the bullshit in their own community. The people around you want to get involved; they’re just not sure how to do it. Give them a means and they’ll stand beside you!
xoxo

Shameless turns 100: The Gallaghers talk auditions, wildest scenes, and the future of the series
They’ve stolen babies, hidden from police in porta potties, and dug up their mother’s grave. Now the Gallaghers (and the Showtime series Shameless) are doing something even more unthinkable: Turning 100.
In 2011, Showtime launched an adaptation of the British series Shameless, showcasing a family and community unlike any other on television. A passionate fan base soon tuned in every Sunday to see the NSFW adventures of the Gallagher clan: degenerate patriarch Frank (William H. Macy), protective oldest child Fiona (Emmy Rossum), genius Lip (Jeremy Allen White), religious rebel Ian (Cameron Monaghan), spunky Debbie (Emma Kenney), troublemaking Carl (Ethan Cutkosky), their sex-crazed neighbors Kevin (Steve Howey) and Veronica (Shanola Hampton), closeted bad boy Mickey (Noel Fisher), and the not-so-friendly neighborhood Russian prostitute Svetlana (Isidora Goreshter).
The rebellious lower-class Chicago family has survived both its own members and the vagaries of the changing TV landscape, becoming one of Showtime’s longest running series—and maybe its most beloved–and is now hitting the illustrious 100th episode milestone.
“You know that cliché saying that it takes 10 years to become an overnight success?” says Howey “That’s exactly what we experi- enced. It took eight seasons and then it was like, ‘Boom. Huge.’” The Gallaghers are set to lose one of their own when Rossum departs at the end of season 9, but before that happens, EW talked to the cast about their memorably deplorable run so far.
Nine years ago, a group of young unknown actors and an Oscar-nominee were thrown together and became a family.
EMMY ROSSUM: I read the script and I knew that this character and world was special. I wanted the part so bad. On my third audition, they didn’t give me notes, they said, “Let’s do this.” I’ve never gotten a part in the room, and I lost it. I was jumping up and down, and very emotional and cursing. [Director] Mark Mylod said, “See, I knew she was right.”
ETHAN CUTKOSKY: I was 10 years old, living in Chicago. My mom and I flew out, not expecting much. By the second audition, we got a contract. I remember running around the hotel, screaming with Emma [Kenney].
SHANOLA HAMPTON: My first memory is auditioning opposite Steve Howey and him being so tall and me being so not tall and thinking there’s no way they’re going to cast us both. So in one of the audition scenes I literally climbed him like a tree.
STEVE HOWEY: She got up there pretty quick. I was like, “I should hold her so she doesn’t fall.” That’s how we ended the scene. And they’re like, “I think we got our Kev and V. If he can hold her, they can f— on camera.”
ISIDORA GORESHTER: The role was presented as “Russian prostitute, no lines, full nudity required.” It was one of the worst auditions of my life. And then I got the job and had this moment, like, “I don’t want to be the actress who has no lines, gets naked and has to do this crazy sex scene.” My manager said, “Just have faith, you never know what can happen.” I think it was a really good decision.
CAMERON MONAGHAN: I’d never seen content like that before. It was shocking and interesting and vulgar, but also poetic and crude and beautiful and all of these things that we’ve come to learn Shameless is. I read with Jeremy [Allen White] and we had the scene where Lip confronts Ian about being gay and I remember going all out and grabbing him around the neck and sort of strangling him and it getting very intense, very quickly.
JEREMY ALLEN WHITE: I had already been cast so I stayed in the room and I went, “Yeah, I think that’s the guy.”
WILLIAM H. MACY: Around the third day, Mark Mylod said, “We’re sending you to play miniature golf.” I’m old and cranky and I said to myself, “What the f— is this?” We get to the first hole and Emma, who was 9, hits the ball and it bounces out. Then she hits the ball and it goes off in the driveway and then she hits another… everyone is going, “That’s okay, do it again!” I’m standing there for 20 minutes, so I walked up and brushed Emma aside and said, “I’m playing through.” She didn’t fall, but it was more forceful than I thought. I got to about the third hole and thought, “I’m an idiot and Mark Mylod’s a genius — I just discovered who Frank Gallagher is.” I unlocked it the second I pushed her off that putting green.
The series’ debut on Netflix before season 7 took it from consistent sleeper to bona fide hit.
EXECUTIVE PRODUCER JOHN WELLS: I guess when you move to a service that has 100 million subscribers then maybe a few more people will see it.
NOEL FISHER: I realized what was happening through social media. I was just randomly checking Instagram and I had several hundred thousand followers that I had done nothing to earn. That was the moment where I was like, “Oh, something is going on here.” That’s when I knew that the show had struck a nerve.
MACY: It was not subtle. I can drink a lot of beer and not pay for it if I wanted to.
ROSSUM: By season 5, there were crowds behind barricades in the Chicago neighborhood that we shoot in. People were Airbnb-ing porches so they could watch [filming].
MONAGHAN: Because Chicago has so much pride for its city and stories, the Gallaghers have become a sort of mascot for the scrappiness of the city.
Almost every script has at least one scene where the actors ask, “Can we do that?”
WELLS: The original one that there was a lot of hesitation about was Frank sleeping with Lip’s girlfriend and then allowing his son to urinate on his head as he was trying to apologize. Being able to have that actually work was where we got our confidence in believing what we could pull off.
MONAGHAN: I remember John saying the words “Gay Jesus” and me going, “Boy, I think some people aren’t going to like that one.” [Laughs].
MACY: Truthfully, I fall on two sides of this line. Sometimes I read them and go, “That’s bizarre — can we do that?” And it usually turns out that we can. There are other times that I go, “We can go so much farther!” When Frank’s running from the police and submerges himself in an overflowing porta potty, that’s burned into everyone’s brain. It wasn’t scripted that way, I pitched it to John. They had to buy a porta potty and rebuild it so that I could submerge myself. But that was me pushing. John kept saying, “Are you sure?” And I said, “Oh my god, it’s so funny.”
ROSSUM: Digging up our mother’s dead body to retrieve the meth that I had buried below her in order to give it back to the drug dealer who was going to kill us… that was pretty intense. You read these things and go, “This is too much,” and then we shoot it and go, “This is too bizarre, we have to ground this,” and then you watch it and it works wonderful
WHITE: I still can’t believe I did [this]. There’s a pretty teacher who lived in the neighborhood and had slept with an underage student. Lip wanted to sleep with her and she realizes I have pubic hair and she doesn’t like that because she’s into young kids. So I had to get rid of everything and they put fake hair down there so that she could shave it during the scene. I just rolled with it at the time, but that’s such a crazy thing they had me do.
EMMA KENNEY: One of them was definitely Frank was cutting off Debbie’s toes. Even the way they wrote it in the script was so vivid and gory. It was also just very simple and Bill brought so much to that scene. The way he lit the cigarette from the stove after he lit it up to burn my toes off, that was improv — he’s such a genius.
HAMPTON: It really hit me with the story line of my mother having Kev and V’s baby and we were in essence doing a threesome. I said, “There’s no way this is going to work, this is gross.” And it really, really surprised me. Don’t misunderstand, it was still gross!
HOWEY: I’m laying there and I have Shanola Hampton sitting on my face and Vanessa Bell Calloway straddling me and all I can think to myself is, “Dreams do come true.”
Hitting 100 episodes after 9 seasons, five Liams, and two Mandys.
WELLS: It took seven years to get this show made in the first place. We were just hoping they wouldn’t shut us down before we finished the first 12 episodes. I take none of it for granted, ever.
ROSSUM: It’s really a privilege. We feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to investigate these characters and to continue to do so.
MACY: It’s a gift on so many levels. I’ve learned so much about acting in these past 100 episodes. Everything about Shameless has been a mitzvah to me. Plus, there’s no assholes! Every show has an asshole. We’ve gone nine years, no assholes.
KENNEY: It just makes me feel so proud — 100 hours of television! That is insane.
CUTKOSKY: Coming out of high school right now, I didn’t really expect any of this, so it’s something that you have to be very appreciative of, appreciative of the family that I’ve created and how much I’ve been taught by all this.
MONAGHAN: We’ve gotten to do 100 episodes of this thing that we love doing and that we care about. It’s this strange mix of comedy and drama and everything we didn’t know if people were going to like, and the fact that they continue to like it and the audience has continued to grow over the course of 100 hour-long stories is pretty phenomenal.
WHITE: It’s very special to have spent this much time with these people. Other than my family and a few close friends, this community has been the most consistent thing in my life.
HAMPTON: It doesn’t really have words. Because we are a family and people see it onscreen and they say that, but nine years later, we still love each other.
GORESHTER: Even if it was just one or two episodes, being a part of a show like Shameless is life changing. Knowing that I’ve been able to be a part of just a minor breadcrumb of the whole loaf is just really special and something that I’ll never forget for the rest of my life.
HOWEY: I could give the bulls— political answer, but the reality is that I’m not surprised. They talk about lightning in a bottle and what makes a great show—well, you’re f—ing looking at it.
Another 100? Despite Rossum’s impending exit, all involved (including the actress) see no end in sight.
MACY: When you get to season 9 and you think of [whether] to keep going, it’s daunting. It’s hard not to think of: “What would my life be post-Shameless?” And part of it is very frightening and part of it is very exciting. She’s young, and I think she’s made the right choice.
ROSSUM: I will never be saying goodbye to Fiona. [She’s] a part of me and has been like every character is a part of you and you’re a little bit part of them.
WELLS: I’ve done a number of shows in which I felt like characters that could never be replaced left, beginning with George Clooney on ER. In the original British series, Fiona left after two seasons and they did nine more…. We feel like we still have a lot of stories to go.
MACY: There are kids, and as they grow up it opens up a brand new world of plot possibilities.
ROSSUM: I think the show could quite honestly go on forever.

i Fullerton claimed his third straight individual title to start the 2020 season.
The Warren boys, led by an eighth place finish from Brennan Perdue, barely beat out second place Fisher Catholic. When the final scores were originally announced, Fisher Catholic had won by two points. However, a later announcement revealed there was an error in the scoring and that Warren had actually edged the Irish 56-58. The Warriors’ tent erupted in excitement at the announcement as they won their fourth straight team title to start the season.
“That’s our fourth win in a row,” said Warren head coach Ryan Werry. “We’ve finished first four races in a row. That’s kind of the boys’ goal, but our ultimate goal is to just keep getting better each week. Each one is a practice leading up to districts. We have goal as a team, we want that district. We want to challenge that. So far the boys have bought in and they’re really working hard.”
Perdue clocked in at 16 minutes, 41 seconds to lead the Warren pack, but Matthews Rauch’s 11th place finish (16:58), Bryson Angelo’s 12th place finish (17:11), Andrew Vincent’s 15th place finish (17:27) and Justin Pate’s 16th place finish (17:36) also helped fuel the victory.
“Brennan’s been finishing first on our team,” Werry said. “Matthew Rauch has been a pretty steady second. He’s been moving up and lots of improvement for him from last year. Andrew Vincent worked hard over the summer. Our top five boys really stuck together over the summer and they worked hard. They’re showing it. Work over the summer and it pays off in the fall.”

Belpre’s Eli Fullerton celebrates after winning Saturday’s Jeremy Anderson Invitational at Fort Frye High School.
For the third time this season, the Belpre duo of Fullerton and Blake Rodgers finished 1-2 in a race.
Fullerton, an All-Ohio runner last season, shattered the course record of 16:34, clocking in at an impressive 15:28. The previous record was held by former Fort Frye Cadet Justin Anderson, younger brother of Jeremy Anderson, who passed away unexpectedly last year.
Fullerton overcame some early-race aches to put together a dominant performance.
“First 100 meters my legs were hurting a little bit,” the Golden Eagle said. “We had a lot of tough workouts this week. But after that I felt really good, really strong. So I just tried to keep it consistent all day.
“My goal was to go under 16-flat. I heard it was a pretty fast course. Wasn’t expecting to go 15:28 and definitely wasn’t expecting Blake to break 16 either. So proud of the team. We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work. It’s just awesome.”
Rodgers, just a freshman, finished in 15:51.
“He’s just killing it every single practice and we’re just going at it,” Fullerton said of his teammate.
Davis Leach added a 27th place (18:31) finish for Belpre, followed by Evan Wells in 31st (19:06) and Kayden Wright in 45th (20:10). It all added up to a third place finish for the short-handed Golden Eagles.
“We don’t have our third or seventh runner right now,” Fullerton said. “They’re both injured at the moment but they should be back this coming weekend at Belpre. Pretty happy with third overall.”
Fisher Catholic’s Patrick Kerney placed third (16:01) while teammates Aiden Jackson (16:28) an Noah Sharp (16:36) finished sixth and seventh, respectively.
Bellaire’s Jacob Definbaugh grabbed fourth place with a time of 16:06. Marietta freshman Ezra Minard earned a top five finish, clocking in at 16:21 for fifth place. Eastern’s Brayden O’Brien (16:49) came in ninth while Fort Frye freshman Phinn Spindler rounded out the top 10 with a time of 16:55.
The Cadet boys placed ninth as a team. Caldwell finished fourth as a team with Andrew Sheanshang (17:36) coming in 17th to produce the Redskins’ top finish.
The Tiger boys placed fifth as a team, led by Minard. Nathan Johnson added a 16th place finish (18:46) while Ethan Young was close behind in 28th (18:52).
On the girls side, it was Marietta which took home the first place trophy. The Tigers defeated second place Warren, 70-84.
“The girls have been working hard in practice and it’s paying off,” said MHS head coach Jon Tynan. “We’ve been changing some things up trying to keep them fresh for race day. It’s super exciting to see them come together like this.”
Ciara Space was the race’s leader for two miles, but Fisher Catholic’s Natalie Boyden took the lead down the stretch and won with a time of 19:18, a new course record.
Space finished second with a time of 19:25
“Ciara Space has been doing a great job for us this season,” Tynan praised. “She’s really going to have a great senior year. We’re looking forward to seeing what she’s got.”
Ava Gebczyk gave the Tigers a fourth place finish at 20:02, finishing just behind Warren’s Grace Randall, who clocked in at 20:01.
Coming in 13th and 14th were Marietta’s Lynncoln Tynan (21:33) and Hannah Lovejoy (21:35), respectively, giving the Tigers four runners in the top 14.
“Having four of the top 14 — and Mahlen (Becker) really pulled in our fifth one there to help us secure that victory,” coach Tynan said. “It was a good day of racing.”
Becker placed 43rd with a time of 23:50.
Allison Werry gave Warren a pair of top 10 finishers, placing ninth with a time of 21:02. Devanne Reynolds finished 20th (22:07), Madelyn Dougherty was 29th (22:47) and Lily Herriott was 32nd (23:03).
“This is a fast course, but our girls just keep improving,” said coach Werry. “At the Broughton race, we finished third behind Marietta and Caldwell. We were looking to move a spot up, win it or get second. That was a team focus today.”
Completing the top 10 in the girls race were Buckeye Trail’s Katherine Williams (5th, 20:07), Federal Hocking’s Rosemary Stephens (6th, 20:07), Caldwell’s Sage Speck (7th, 20:16), Shenandoah’s Kendall Mackie (8th, 20:46) and River’s Mara Beard (10th, 21:07).
Speck, who won the Broughton Invitational earlier this season, helped Caldwell place third as a team. Brynn Block (18th, 21:52), Calli Hesson (24th, 22:19), Katie Franklin (26th, 22:35) and Emma Lowe (27th, 22:38) were Caldwell’s other big contributors.
Morgan’s Emily Pinkerton just missed the top 10, placing 11th with a time of 21:15. Waterford’s Kaylor Offenberger clocked in at 21:42 to place 16th, while Morgan’s Dahlia Hill was right behind in 17th with a time of 21:51.
The Belpre boys won the middle school team title. The Golden Eagles got second, third and fourth place finishes from Austin Jenkins (12:33), Carter Norman (12:47) and Johnny Miller (12:47), respectively.
Eastern’s Connor Nolan won the individual title with a time of 11:33. Marietta’s Tyler Frye placed fifth (12:47), Waterford’s Troy Gibson was sixth (12:49), Caldwell’s Charles Estadt was seventh (12:52), Waterford’s Aiden Jones was eighth (13:01), Shenandoah’s Jarrett Wentworth was ninth (13:04) and Waterford’s Gavin Offenberger was 10th (13:13).
Fort Frye dominated the girls middle school race, taking the team title with four girls in the top five. Emma Richards won the race with a time of 12:53, followed by Cadence Waller (2nd, 13:07), Laine Spindler (3rd, 13:52) and Maggie Fulton (5th, 14:23.)
Marietta’s Millie Becker placed fourth (14:07), Waterford’s Seneca Lang was sixth (14:43), Belpre’s Shyanna Miller was seventh (14:46), River’s Mallory Brake was eighth (14:56), Caldwell’s Alexis Franklin placed ninth (14:57) and Waterford’s Alyssa Mooney came in 10th (15:31.)
Warren’s head coach had high praise for the level of competition the race featured.
“We came into this not knowing, and then we started seeing some teams show up, and we were like, ‘OK, we’re going to have a race today,’” Werry said. “That’s what we want. We want the challenge. We don’t want to be complacent. We want to go places where we’re going to be challenged.”

Jessica Szohr on Shameless, Gossip Girl, and Ed Westwick The actress, best known for playing Vanessa on GG, talks about her new role and more.
She's best known for playing Vanessa, Dan's BFF from Brooklyn, on Gossip Girl — which turned 10 in September—but these days you can catch Jessica Szohr as Nessa, Fiona's new tenant, on Shameless. Here, Szohr talks about her new role, GG, and the recent sexual assault allegations against her former co-star Ed Westwick.
Were you a fan of Shameless before you booked the role?
I was. I had known Jeremy [Allen White, who plays Lip] for years when I was living in New York, so when he booked the pilot, and then when it was picked up, a bunch of us got together and watched it. I watched it for the first couple seasons and then I didn’t stay caught up, and then when I was asked to come in to take the meeting and audition for it, I had called my manager and I’m like, "Do I need to watch these three seasons?" And I was always a big fan—you just know how TV is now. You’ll get into something and if for one second leave it, you go back and you have so much to catch up on. But I was always a fan of it. I think the actors are incredible, I think the writing’s amazing.
Did your manager tell you to catch up? What did you decide to do?
It came up pretty quickly. I ended up watching a few of the episodes from where I had left off, just to kind of get the tone and see where everyone was, and then I went and auditioned and within, like, two days they had offered it to me and I was super excited, and it was such a great season and awesome working with Emmy [Rossum, who plays Fiona]. In this next episode coming up you see that I am introduced a little bit more to the family.
Did the cast do anything to welcome you?
They gave a really nice introduction at the table read. When you come into a show and everyone’s working together, it’s kind of like [you’re] the new kid on the block and everyone knows each other, but they couldn’t have been sweeter or nicer, more professional. When you’re going into something after a couple of seasons, sometimes people tend to get lazy or they’re not as excited or they complain a lot. And I didn’t really get that vibe with this [cast] at all. It felt like they had just got picked up and were so excited to have this job. It was a real blessing to be a part of that and see that and to know that people still worked that way. When I say that, it’s not like all the other projects I’ve done wasn’t that way; this was just a breath of fresh air for me.
How is the Nessa/Fiona relationship going to evolve over the season?
They’re friends and they definitely have a good chemistry. Nessa really helps her out, even if it’s just to be an ear to say, "Hey, what about take this advice or try this?" So they grow a pretty good friendship. Nessa thinks Fiona’s this lovely person and she cracks [her] up and Nessa's girlfriend, Mel, has a bit of a chip on her shoulder, and she kind of stirs the pot a little bit. There’s some interesting things that I know I’m not allowed to say yet that comes up...what Fiona helps us out with and that kind of thing. There’s something interesting that happens that is quite shocking. It’s kind of funny at the same time, but that’s Shameless.
Can you relate to the Gallaghers? I know you’re from a big family yourself.
Yes, I’m the oldest of five. I mean, they have so much going on. Being the oldest of five, we were always like running to sports or running to some school function and on the go, and our house was always where people came for dinner and slept over. Ours was very much an entertaining home, where there was game night with all of our friends and family. So the dynamic of everyone being close and having each other’s backs and being there for each other I can definitely relate to, but my dad wasn’t like Frank. The situation of their relationship with their parents I can’t really relate to. But the things between siblings, and being there or having the disagreements and that kind of thing, for sure.
Did anyone from the cast bring up Gossip Girl to you when first joined?
Yeah, Emma [Kenney], who plays Deb, was like, "Oh my gosh, that was my favorite show." And she was such a sweetheart. So we had a pretty long conversation just about filming that and the different characters and how everyone was off set. And Emmy’s from the Upper East Side, so she was a fan of the show as well. I remember when I booked Gossip Girl and I had to do a little research of New York, because all of us came from L.A. I met a couple of people from the Upper East Side I’m like, "I just need to know, is this remotely close?" And I know that some stuff is for shock value for the audience, but even the bags they would use or having limos drop them off—you know, having so much at your fingertips. So a lot of times people were like, "There are certain things on the show that are a little bit more than what we experience, but a lot of it was dead on," whether it was the fashion or wanting to go to different clubs or events. So I found that interesting, coming from a small town [in Wisconsin] that didn’t even have a Starbucks and everyone knew each other, and my whole family lived within a mile apart. It was a totally different world to be in.
Did you leave the show on good terms? Did you want to leave the show? [Editor's note: Szohr left the show as a series regular in 2011, after its fourth season.]
Yeah! Everyone was so excited and blessed to be a part of that, there was never any hard feelings. When I originally went, I was only supposed to go and do three episodes. So on the third one, when they asked me to be a series regular, I didn’t know if that meant I was going to be there for a year, if the show would go two years or three years, so I was just blessed to be a part of it. It was everyone’s first job that gave them a platform, and to be running around New York City…the city was such a part of the show and such a character, and whether it was restaurants or fashion or concerts or an art gallery or museums, everyone wanted to be a part of the show, so they were so lovely to all of us. And it’s also quite interesting because it was based on a gossip blog. And at the time there wasn’t really social media, [not] what it is today. Twitter had started when we were doing the show, but there wasn’t Instagram. So I look back now and find it so interesting that we were doing this show based on how everyone basically lives their lives now. People can’t not check their social media for 10 minutes. And I always laugh with Chace [Crawford, who played Nate] and ask him, because still see each other and don’t live far from each other, "Can you imagine while we were filming if there was all that." We’re like, "Not at all."
But, no, we all had fun, and I feel like it’s one of those things—and I’ve talked to some of my friends that were on That ‘70s Show and other shows that were on for years—and sometimes after you get a fourth, fifth season with TV, because you’re playing the same character, sometimes you’ll hear actors be like, "I’m ready for it to be done." And then a year or two when it’s done, you’re like, "Oh, that was such a good gig, it was so fun."
So, this is obviously a sensitive subject and I approach it with respect for you completely, but Ed was recently accused of rape by multiple women, and I’m just wondering what processing that news has been like for you.[Editor's note: Westwick has denied all claims, saying that he is "cooperating with authorities so that they can clear my name as soon as possible."]
It’s a difficult subject right now for anyone that’s involved on either side…I don’t even really know how to answer it, if I should, because I don’t want anything to get twisted, because I have known Ed for years and know how lovely he is, and don’t think he would ever put someone in a position like that. It’s difficult, because you don’t want someone you know to go through that or do that to someone, or knowing them well, knowing that you don’t think they would, and you don't want, for the girls that are coming forward, it’s like, are they stretching the truth? It’s just, it’s a touchy, tough thing that you pray it’s not true and that with, outside of even him, all these different topics coming up, I’m glad that there’s notice being put on it for women that are going through it. But I also think it’s a touchy, crazy thing too, because some people are going into these different situations and they’re not coming out true. So it’s like, well, why are people making it up, because that takes away from the girls that are going through it. And then it’s also hard to go back and try to get evidence from things that were so long ago. So, I’m really trying to answer this as open and nicely as I can, because it is touchy, and I obviously for any of these situations, wasn’t there, for either side, so I can’t say it did or didn’t happen. But I know him well and I’ve known him for years, and I found it shocking. And I hope that it’s untrue, but I also feel bad for anyone that’s been in that situation, for the women that have to deal with that, for the situations that are true.
Have you spoken to Ed since the news broke?
Yes.
And can you share anything about that conversation?
I mean, he’s going through a difficult time. He’s being accused of something that he’s publicly saying he didn’t do. So it’s, you know, tough on him. His show got canceled. [Editor's note: The BBC announced that "until these matters are resolved" they are not airing Westwick's show Ordeal by Innocence and that filming for White Gold has been put on hold.] You know, he’s like, "The truth will come out and hopefully people see that and hopefully that’s it." It’s just such an unfortunate thing all around. And I have to be so careful, because it’s not my situation and I don’t—I wasn’t there. So it’s hard to speak on behalf of those girls or him.
Right, yes. And I—
I don’t know those girls at all, and they could be lovely and awesome and all that. From the Ed I know and working with him for five years and having a friendship through all of that and after, it was shocking. It was shocking.
Are you saying, then, that you don’t believe the allegations?
I’m trying to feel, like how you asked the question. I mean, from the person I know, I find it shocking, because I can’t see him doing that to someone. And it’s a tough thing because I wasn’t there for those situations and I don’t know. But if you’re asking me "Do I think he would do that to someone?" No, I don’t. But was I there? No. I’m so sorry, I’m trying to answer it in a way—this could get very sticky if this gets printed and my words get twisted, it’s not gonna be great.
Right. I wanted to just make sure that I was clarifying [what you were saying]. To move forward with something more positive, I guess, and to go back to Shameless, can you share a little bit about what happened at the wrap party? Because those are always fun.
We had it at a place in Hollywood and they just had really good food, music. You don’t really get to always see the crew so much outside of work—you’re all there all day and you’re moving from one scene to the next and going in and out of changes, in and out of hair and makeup. So it’s nice to just kind of be in an element of appreciating everyone’s hard work and what everyone does to be their part of this puzzle to make a successful, fun, great show. There was great music, we danced, ate. They were showing clips of this whole season…it was a really good time, and everyone was, I think, happy to be there and appreciate each other’s hard work.
This interview has been edited and condensed for length and clarity.

Could I have some help with a FC? I'm looking for a younger alternative to Aaron Tveit who could pass for anywhere between 15 and 22-ish? The character's also based off his role as Enjolras in Les Mis, so I'm kind of looking for that, like, revolutionary vibe, I guess. I was thinking maybe Colin Ford, but idk. I want a second opinion lol. Thanks in advance!
Alt-FC-for-Aaron-Tveit anon here! After thinking a little, I've decided that I'm also actually okay with a female alternative as well, if any come to mind. Like I said, they just need to have that kind of "Let's go start a fucking revolution" vibe.
I think Nick Robinson fits that bill pretty well! Otherwise I think Tye Sheridan, RJ Cyler, Ethan Cutkosky*, Tom Holland, Cameron Boyce, and Booboo Stewart all give off that kind of vibe as well. As for females, maybe Sabrina Carpenter, Camren Bicondova, Emma Kenney*, Herizen Guardiola, or Becky G would work well!

why season 4 is actually one of debbie’s best seasons, not her worst.
i feel like when people talk about debbie gallagher, specifically when people who dislike debbie gallagher talk about her, they talk about the change from season 3 to season 4. how she changed from being a sweet innocent kid to a bratty obnoxious teenager. these comments are always so interesting to me because i feel like people’s weird perspectives kind of diminish the purpose of debbie in season 4 which is unfortunate because it really is such a good season for her.
“the change” in question wasn’t really a drastic change at all, her behavior has been basically the same for all eleven seasons. people say her personality changed when in reality, emma kenney changed. season 3 and 4 are supposed to happen very close together, which isn’t realistic considering when they started filming. by season 4, emma and ethan both look much older than they did in the previous season. for ethan, this doesn effect how people like his character because he is both a male and comedic relief, but for emma, this will effect her.
in season 2, debbie acts pretty similarly to how she does in season 4. in both seasons, debbie is obsessed with holly, making boys like her, and looking older than she is. but in season 2, emma kenney’s face is younger, her voice is higher, the clothes she wears don’t fit and the makeup she applies is applied sloppily because she’s so young; she acts cuter. people don’t take debbie trying to act promiscuous in this season seriously because of how little she looks, and two seasons later, the standards don’t seem to apply anymore even though emma kenney is still so young. even if she’s still young, her voice is less squeaky, her body is developing, the clothes fit better, and the makeup is still sloppy but for some reason, it doesn’t make her look as childish. anyone with half a mind can tell she’s a kid trying to look like an adult, yet for some reason, when she does it in this season as a thirteen year old, it’s completely different than when she did it as an eleven year old.
she stops being as cute, and so her personality doesn’t really work. debbie has always been intelligent, extra, sassy, loyal, and desperate for attention. she’s always had a debilitating fear of abandonment and issues with attachment. when you’re babyfaced and a kid, these traits are funny, then she starts to age and these traits aren’t cute, they’re annoying. when debbie kidnaps a baby in season 1 and fiona is asked why, she says, “it’s debbie”, and although debbie has just done something really bad, it being debbie is an explanation and somehow makes the situation better. later on, when she’s still a kid just a little older, if she does something like this, “it’s debbie” is a bad thing.
i think that if people want to go down the path of saying that she majorly changed or had a downfall, they should consider how her trauma actually did effect her around this time because yes, there were a few minor changes in her that are undeniable.
in season 3, she loses the trust of both of her parents. that’s something. she waits for a whole year for frank, setting up some sort of altar for him and praying. when he returns, she tries desperately to get his love and attention like she has been for the whole show, and it ends in him destroying her room and her school project, insulting her while she’s at it. and so, she goes batshit and starts hitting him as hard as she can. ever since season 1, debbie has been dependent on frank’s attention. she knows he’s bad and she knows what’s wrong with him but she doesn’t care as long as she can still find ways to squeeze a bit of love out of him. this is where that stops. this is where she changes some of her morals, because she realizes that her father won’t change and yeah, it does destroy her. then, he calls dcfs on the siblings and gets them separated, and debbie is put all alone in an abusive home. this is obviously going to destroy a girl with severe abandonment issues, not to mention a girl who has never been alone like this before. so when she gets out of that house, obviously she’s gonna be more traumatized. then, when they go to family court, she discovers that monica and fiona saw each other, and she doesn’t want to be their mother anymore. this breaks debbie even more, and she hears frank’s bullshit about how he loves his kids and even though she’s trying to make herself hate him, she still listens to it and testifies with carl. later on, when she’s talking to sheila and taking care of her, it’s revealed that debbie blames herself for monica leaving, and if monica were to return and stay she would forgive her and welcome her with open arms.
^ so with all of that considered, she’s gonna be fucked up. and that’s only part of the reason she acts the way she does. we have her parents absence, but also her older siblings. with her parents out of the way, she becomes more dependent on fiona, but fiona is now constantly at work, leaving them with sheila, and then… well, we all know what happens with fiona in season 4. as for lip, he’s off at college. that’s that. then, ian has run away and all they have is a couple of texts. she’s desperate to get him back but fiona assures her he’s fine, and she doesn’t believe it. so when she and lip go find ian, he’s different. he’s gone. frank and monica were the people she depended on, then they were gone, and now her older siblings, her three constants and role modes, seem to be gone, too.
debbie becomes colder because she is more alone. no parents, no parental figures, she becomes even more independent than she previously was. she decides she doesn’t need anyone. holly and ellie teach her about a new way to get attention, which is using her sexuality, something she never really tried to use for attention because she’s thirteen. she starts sexualizing herself, and holly tells her she likes matty, so she decides she does. and remember how debbie decided she didn’t need anyone to depend on? yeah, bullshit. matty is a new adult in her life and with frank dying, she needs someone for male validation. matty tells her she’s sexy and a great dancer, and he gives her food, lets her sleep in his bed, and gives her the attention she thinks that she needs. she doesn’t realize she’s being groomed, she thinks it’s love. he even promises to have sex with her when she’s 16 and he’s 23 because his main concern is if it’s illegal or not.
in season 4, debbie is left, used, bullied, humiliated, and ruined. she’s a thirteen year old girl, and being thirteen as a girl is rough. her mind is changing, along with her body, her family, her life, everything. debbie historically does horrible with change, it shouldn’t at all be surprising that she acts how she does. what people view as a bitch or a brat is so obviously a hurt, traumatized child and it’s almost disturbing that people don’t seem to see that. i’ve seen debbie mocked for matty, and while in season 5 the situation got worse, she didn’t do anything wrong in season 4. all that she did was have more attitude, but it was clearly a trauma response. debbie was ignored and hurt in season 4, she was a victim. and she was realistic. the change was expected and necessary for her character. case closed.

Ethan Cutkosky Imagine I Just Want to Know You Better Now *This will have multiple parts, that’s why it’s longer. Please give me your feedback “)*
Background: You had been friends with Emma Kenney throughout practically all of your adolescence. The two of you met at a scouting event when you were pre-teens, and while Emma decided to actually pursue acting, you chose to focus on school. Nonetheless, you always kept up with Emma and her projects, and have been a die hard Shameless fan since the show came out. You two have remained friends, and Emma has been your biggest fan, as you attend university to study fashion. Emma has recently invited you down to Florida for vacation, and she is bringing along Ethan, and you’re super stoked to get to hang out with the both of them again. You got to meet Ethan when you were kids, on the set of Shameless, tagging along with Emma and her family to L.A., one year. But now that you all are older, you’re eager to re-unite.
~
You step out of the airport in Orlando, pulling your sunnies down, and wave a taxi to take you to Emma’s summer home. You’re ready to finally relax, after a long fall semester at FIT. Riding in the taxi, you observe the Florida scenery, taking in the smells, and the sun. Emma is already outside as you approach her house, waving and jumping, making a smile spread across your mostly hidden face. “Y/N!,” Emma greets you, embracing you in a tight squeeze. “Hey, em. Sweet party pad,” you hug her back. “Why thank you,” she laughs. “ Come in, Ethan’s on his skateboard at the boardwalk, but he’ll be back soon.” “Sweet, I can’t wait to see him, it’s been so long.” “I know! We’re thinking of going out tonight, I know you just landed, but are you down?” “Hell yes,” you grin, and you both head to Emma’s closet to get ready to go have a night of fun.
Just as the two of you were finished with your makeup, Ethan returned from skateboarding, calling out for Emma, “Where you at loser!?” You laugh, you always loved their playful relationship, on and off screen, it was like they really were brother and sister. “In my room!” Emma called, Ethan sauntered in, while you sprayed a little perfume on. You took one last glance at yourself, Emma and Ethan fake wrestling behind you. As you turn around to finally greet Ethan, you both stare at one another for a little too long. You may have a boyfriend back in New York, but you have to admit, he has gotten pretty handsome since the last time you seen him, as kids. A thought you knew you shouldn’t have, especially since you keep up with what little he puts on social media, and know he has a stunning girlfriend. “Hey, Y/N, it’s been a long time,” Ethan greets you, distracting you from your thoughts, and pulling you in for a quick hug, as you stand from Emma’s vanity. You love his longer hair now, but you have always loved his light, wide eyes. And you especially loved his nose, and beautiful lashes. “A long time it has been, looking Good, Cutkosky,” you hug him back, the two of you still scanning over one another.
Your Outfit:
<div style="width:600px;margin:0 auto"><div style="position:relative;"><a target="_blank" href="http://www.polyvore.com/shameless_date/set?.embedder=3964068&.svc=copypaste&id=223772209"><img width="600" alt="Shameless Date"
Ethan’s P.O.V:
It’s been such a long time since I have seen Y/N. We’re all so grown up, I’ve always wondered what she’s gotten into, since she decided not to act. I always loved how smart she was, though. It came at no surprise, when Emma mentioned she was in college. She looks good. Really good. Especially in that dress. After longing glances, and awkward embarces...“Brielle,” he thought to himself.
Your P.O.V:
The three of you went down town after Ethan got ready, deciding on dinner and drinks. Emma ended up inviting a local boy she had been working on a few projects with, that she said she had taken interest in. You sat next to Ethan on one side of the booth at the upscale Orlando restaurant you all chose, while Emma engulfed in conversation with her newest boo, on the other side. “So, you’re in college?” Ethan asks you. You nod, straw still in your mouth, “Fashion school. New York City,” you smile, thinking about your home. “Fancy stuff,” Ethan grins, sipping a drink too. “Hey, look at you, Hollywood,” you shrug. He laughs, “My place of work may be here, and my girl, but I’m an East side boy.” “East side, represent!” you two continue on smiling, laughing, and making small talk. “So...what about you, you seein’ anybody?” Ethan casually asks, “I knew that question was coming, yeah” you laugh. “He’s no super model type like you’ve scored, but he treats me well, name’s Kyle” you joke. “That’s what matters, right?” He offers. You love your boyfriend. He really does treat you well. A hard worker, someone you could spend your whole life well. But being in Florida, tonight, staring at Ethan Cutkosky, makes you wonder what would have happened in you chose the glamorous life...who would you have ended up with...him? You always admired his goofy personality, and his looks were just an added bonus. You started to wonder if maybe, you had settled down too quickly.
After a fun dinner between the four of you, you all decided to head home to chill, you felt pretty tired after your plane ride. Changing into a tank top, PINK sweats, and throwing your hair in a bun, you joined your friends on the couch, plopping down next to Eth. “What are we watchin’” you asked, as Emma put a DVD in. “Oh, we’re taking a trip down memory lane,” Emma laughs. One of Ethan’s earliest projects, the Unborn appears on the TV, and you snort, as Ethan covers his eyes, that beautiful grin plastered on his face. “I hate scary movies, but baby Ethan is worth it” you joke. He nudged you playfully, the three of you snacking, and laughing when Ethan’s scenes come on. Emma was the first one to drift off, falling asleep with all of the blankets. By nearly the end of the movie, you and Ethan were close enough that your knees touched, and although you were sure he thought nothing of it, you couldn’t help but feel tingles from his every touch tonight. Every time he playfully nudged you, drew you in for a friendly hug, or the one time your hands brushed at dinner, as the waiter collected your menus. You knew what you were feeling was wrong, so you blamed it on the “tiredness” and focused on the movie. Ethan yawned next you, as the movie ended, you offered him a tired smile. “I’m gonna call Brielle before we fall asleep,” “OK” you nodded, ignoring the little pangs of jealousy, when he talked about her. So beautiful and successful, you had to admit. You covered Em up fully, as you went to wash your makeup off, Ethan wandering off to the kitchen with his phone. You couldn’t help but replay your conversations with him from the day, in your mind. The goofy pictures you took. You loved when he talked about music, and festivals, and art, and the way his eyes lit up when you talked about Shameless. Although he had nothing to offer when you talked about school, you felt like he really listened. You decided to check out Em’s balcony, wanting to get out and look at the moon lit beach, and get out of your thoughts. The ocean looked massive, almost as immense as the guilt that was creeping up on you for your feelings.
Ethan’s P.O.V:
After hanging up with Brielle, I was feeling like sleep, so I decided to find Y/N and tell her goodnight. Spotting her outside on the balcony, I couldn’t help but smile at her hair tied up, I guess I was thinking she grew up to be truly stunning, dressed up or not. “Great view,” I offered, as I slipped out onto the balcony. She turned around quickly, “yeah, it is, isn’t it?” “I’m glad we decided to come down, it’s been fun, nice to catch up,” I said, lamely. She smiled at me. I just smiled back, and we both seemed to be in our own heads, staring out at the water. After we decided to go in and figure out sleeping arrangements, since Emma only had a one room beach house, and she was supposed to sleep in her room and leave us the couch, I decided to be a gentleman. Leaving Y/N with Emma’s bed, I made up my own space, with blankets from a trunk in the living room. Y/N and I already said goodnight, but I felt this strange sense of longing, to just talk to her, to be in her presence, as I lied down to try to sleep. Staring at the ceiling, my mind was whirling, with thoughts of two girls, which really confused me. I meet new people all of the time, none with such a profound impact on myself and my thoughts. Before I knew it, I was getting up from the couch, walking towards Emma’s room. Y/N was there, under the covers, sitting up reading a book. I hung in the doorway for a moment, just observing.
Y/N P.O.V:
Looking up from one of my cheesy self-improvement books, I was startled to see Eth standing in the doorway, now with no shirt. He looked so damn good, and that hair. “I just want to know you better,” he blurted out. My heart raced at every word.

Why New Parents Need to Take a Break From the News (and What They Should Do Instead)
In the months after my kids were born, the news cycle would send me into tailspins of anxiety and fear. The Penn State sex-abuse scandal and the Newtown shootings paralyzed me for days—I wept while changing diapers, wept in the bathtub, wept while pushing the stroller down the street. What might have been (merely!) horrifying pre-kids was now incapacitating. For my own mental health, I had to stop reading the news and looking at social media.
Take a Media Fast
Judging from the conversations in my moms’ groups, these feelings aren’t at all unusual. New parents are especially vulnerable to anxiety, says Laura Venuto, a New York City therapist specializing in postpartum mental-health issues. “Sleep deprivation and hormones exacerbate mood and anxiety symptoms. With new parenthood comes a heightened awareness that you’re suddenly not only responsible for yourself, but also a small child in what sometimes seems like a dangerous world.”
Dr. Venuto suggests a total news-media fast or at least a major reduction, corralling your news into 10 or 15 minutes (“In the morning! Not before bed!” she says), and then doing something pleasurable, like playing with your baby or calling a friend. For those worried that being out of touch means slacking off in their political activism, she gently suggests cutting yourself some slack: “If you’re a new parent, you’re not going to be making changes on a global scale. You’re in survival mode. You can put in a call to your representative, and that can be enough.”
Practice ‘Containment’
Lissa Hunsicker Kenney, a social worker in Brooklyn who counsels trauma survivors, also recommends “containment”—the first line of treatment for anxiety—as a first step. “Turning off your iPhone is containment—because it’s so easy for it to become uncontained. It just scrolls and scrolls, and it’s endless.”
So what are we supposed to do, instead? (Besides take care of our kids, I mean.) I asked Lifehacker readers, and my own new-mom friends, what media they turn to for good escapist distraction. I didn’t vet all the answers (though I did nix anything that had “horror” in its IMDB description—what about “non-disturbing” did these people not understand?) so do your own research before leaping into something totally unknown. They’re a good mix of classics, favorite sitcoms and adventure shows, a few kids’ shows and books, comics, and pretty much the entire oeuvre of the BBC.
Ideally, this list will remind of you of beloved books, TV shows, and movies that you’ve enjoyed in the past and will be soothing entertainment now, while you’re still in the sensitive new-parent stage. I read all of Jane Austen at night instead of mindless smartphone scrolling; others swear by sitcoms: “When my son was born we very quickly figured out we had to stop watching Breaking Bad and Walking Dead and just ended up re-watching Parks and Rec on a continuous loop for like three years,” one commenter wrote. Check out the original comments here, and please add your favorite comforting (no child-in-peril, no dead parents, no rapes or murders) media below.
TV & Movies
30 Rock
All Creatures Great and Small
Alias (a spy thriller spanning five seasons, so there are murders and occasional child-in-peril plotlines, but it’s a pretty campy show, so I didn’t find it especially distressing)
The Andy Griffith Show
Flip This House (or any fixer-upper/DIY type shows)
Any stupid Adam Sandler movie
Archer
Arrested Development
Black Adder
Black Books
Bob’s Burgers
Boondocks
Borgen
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (skipping “The Body” and maybe the second half of season five)
Catastrophe
Community
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend
Critical Role on Geek and Sundry
Doctor Thorne (almost comically predictable, appropriate for anyone with only half a functioning brain, but any costume drama will do in a pinch. Check out this terrific resource for period dramas, but I strongly urge you to skip Call the Midwife if you have a newborn.)
Drunk History
Ed, Edd ‘n Eddy
Elimidate
Everybody Loves Raymond
Farscape
Father Ted
Friends
Futurama
Get Smart
Ghostbusters
Gilmore Girls
Gravity Falls
The Great British Bake-off (or any cooking show)
Grey’s Anatomy (I can’t believe this is still on the air; I have like 10 years to catch up on. Warning: it’s a hospital show, so people do die. Deeennnnnnny!)
Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Laaaaaaaaaw
Hogan’s Heroes
How I Met Your Mother
It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia
Jeeves and Wooster
Kids’ shows and movies, like Adventure Time, Reading Rainbow (the awesome 80’s-90’s version), A Dragon’s Tale, Out of the Box, Teen Titans GO, Rocko’s Modern Life, Hey Arnold!, Rocky & Bullwinkle, Babe, the Narnia movies, Nanny McPhee
Kiki’s Delivery Service (“Miyazaki in general is a great way to escape into a different realm. The colors, the music, the gorgeous inventive artwork and the great characters in all his films makes him a master illusionist and conductor into a whole new world..” “…but not Grave of the Fireflies,” says another commenter.)
Broad City (“It’s hilarious and my life feels like a complete financial success by comparison.”)
King of the Hill
Last Man on Earth
Lucha Underground
M*A*S*H
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Midsomer Murders (“While there are murders, everyone is so provincial and charming, it’s like coming home where you know everyone except for that darned stranger that got themselves killed.”)
The Mindy Project
Mr. Bean
MST3K
Any terrible reality TV (“I watch The People’s Court or Judge Judy, which I DVR in case I need them.”)
News Radio
Northern Exposure
Office Space
Only Fools and Horses
Over the Garden Wall
Parks and Rec
Party Down
Real Genius
Real Housewives (“Oddly enough, RHOC comforts me in that I always feel smart, competent, healthy, and sane afterward.”)
The Simpsons
SlowTV “Right after the election, my wife and I started watching a lot of SlowTV on Netflix. Things like Norwegian knitting competitions.”
Smallville
South Park
Space: 1999
Star Trek
Steven Universe
Supernatural
Taxi
The Blues Brothers
