i know nothing about pokemon but tell us about the oc!!!

okay so one thing to establish right out the gate is that I am even more inconsistent in Elly’s lore than dc is with their canon so this will all be subject to change the second I get dlc/a new game/really anything

But that aside!

She’s from my own fakemon region (based on Pangaea, I named it Pantoria) but her moms are from Kanto and Paldea. Her first mom’s name is Lucy and is a former Kanto and Johto champion, whereas her other mom’s name is Illumina, though during her trainer days she was known as Illumina La Serena, and she was a Kalos Champion and has also achieved the Champion rank in Paldea. So right off the bat Elly has already been raised alongside some pretty strong Pokémon and battlers.

Lucy moves to Galar temporarily for work and takes Elly with her, and then Elly befriends Hop and they take on the Gym challenge together. She picks Sobble, and names him Lulo. Then everything goes wrong but they save the day and she catches Eternatus. Her mom, who also caught a legendary at age ten, is unfazed. Largely bc Lucy caught Mewtwo, though she had since chosen to release them.

Then comes the post game, where Elly also catches Zacian. Hop decides to become a Pokémon professor and they have their little dlc adventures, and Elly catches even more legendary Pokémon in the Crown Tundra. Lucy’s sister Johanna (who is actually the mom in brilliant diamond but I chose to change that) takes her in for a bit so she can see the sinnoh region, and all of that happens. (I haven’t actually finished brilliant diamond but I have an idea of what happens). While she’s in Sinnoh Arceus decides that she’s the perfect candidate to send back in time to save the world.

So now she’s in Hisui, with no memories, and she gets a Rowlet that she names Dart. Dart does not evolve into the Decidueye Elly felt that she should have expected, but hey, she has no memories anyway, so who is she to question anything?

She fixes all the problems with the frenzied lord and lady pokemon, then survives for a bit in the wild, and clears her name, AND saves the world. And then she meets arceus, who returns her home, though she is allowed to return to Hisui when she wants (bc im a sucker for friendships and I can’t just leave them behind. Also she literally catches Dialga. The time god).

Of course, there’s no time to process this, bc it’s time for school! Summers over, kids. She goes back to Illumina in Paldea and is enrolled in Naranja Academy, where she (you guessed it) saves the world and becomes a champion rank trainer. Nowadays, with the treasure hunt over for her, she publishes an online Pokémon fact magazine with hop, hangs out with her paldean school friends, and time travels back to Hisui sometimes to show Laventon future pokedexes.

All that’s left now is for her to become a Champion in Pantoria! Unfortunately, Pantoria is absolutely massive, bc I decided since my region was fake there was no point cutting corners about it, and has a gym for Every Type. And then extra, if you thought that was too easy. And there’s new types. And there are requests, and every kind of mini activity to complete. There’s also a rough estimate of 600+ characters to befriend, if I did my maths right, based on the amount of towns and other things in the region. So currently Elly is on that adventure, on which she invited all of her friends from present-day games. What could possibly go wrong?

Also wow I didn’t think I was writing that much. Elly has lore, and then she has LORE. she’s my little guy <3

Playing Pokémon again on the emulator I have so;;; Now I’m thinking about Bronwen’s hometown in the different regions bhjvfbhjsdfhjbvbjhjhbbjhfdvfbhjvdfbhjdf

Here’s my ideas!!!;

Pearl/Diamond/Platinum [Sinnoh]: Floaroma Town. Yes, the place with all the flowers. She also spent a lot of time in the north, though, and is used to the cold. In terms of starters, it varies depending on which game! In Pearl, she has a piplup [Blueberry], in Platinum it’s a turtwig [Olive], and in Diamond it’s a chimchar [Cherry]. If one wants to know which one is “canon” for, it’s technically Pearl, but they’re all their own timelines.

Heartgold/Soulsilver [Johto]: Ecruteak City. The place with the Ghost type gym! Bronwen’s starter is always a cyndaquil named Tyler. He’s her baby. She very quickly gets a gastly though, who she names Ellie.

Black/White [Unova]: Undella Town, the same place where Cynthia lives. Bronwen’s starter is a Snivy, who she names Elvis. Although, since she’s coming from a higher-level area, her brother also gives her a deerling [winter form] who Bronwen names Snowflake. This is so Bronwen can get back to the lower gyms relatively safely on her own. Snowflake has an abnormally high speed stat.

X/Y [Kalos]: Snowbelle City. Well... only technically. Bronwen lives on the outskirts, away from much of the hustle and bustle, but still within city limits. Her starter is a Fennekin who she names Delphi. She also very quickly gets a Sylveon, though, who tends to sit on her head and is named Candy.

Sun/Moon [Alola]: Bronwen’s actually from Sinnoh in this one, specifically Floaroma town again, but she lives on Akala Island alone not far from Tapu Lele’s cave. This is because Tapu Lele really likes her and basically dragged the girl to a spot where she could fix up an old house, which she did. Bronwen just doesn’t ask anymore. Bronwen’s starter is a Litten named Aeronwen.

Let’s Go Eevee [Kanto]: Lavender Town. Yes, the ever infamous Lavender Town. Bronwen loves it there, and bonds very strongly with the ghost types. Her starter is a charmander, named Dexter. She also gets a gastly who just kinda.... started following her around and never stopped, then plopped herself in a pokéball. Her name is Gigi.

Sword/Shield [Galar]: Born in Spikemuth, and spent a few years of her life there before her family moved to Ballonlea due to her mother’s work. Bronwen’s starter is a scorbunny named Katsuki [named for a character she saw in a show] who is her dearest friend. She is extremely close with Leon and Piers, who she spent much time with as a child despite them living in different places for a long time.

currently watching: showing my wife the reboot of Battlestar Galactica! we’re riiiiight in the middle of the Starbuck/Lee/Anders/Dee love quadrangle from hell, so it’s been slow going lately lol. in return, she’s been showing me the original Pokemon anime. we’re on the “Johto Journeys” season now.

sweet, spicy, or savory: this is honestly the meanest question ever and i resent having to choose. but, if i must, i gotta go with sweet. you’ll take my nondairy ice cream from my cold, frozen hands.

currently reading: as telanu put it, dipping in and out of a lot of stuff. Axiom’s End by Lindsay Ellis, The Taiga Syndrome by Cristina Rivera Garza, the entire back catalogue of AO3′s Disco Elysium tag (completed works only), and whatever fascinating articles my wife sends me from her grad school courses.

what i'm working on: most of my writing is related to my teaching job: feedback on students’ work, reflection on my own practice, professional learning community (PLC) and lesson planning, stuff like that. however, i’ve also taken to writing notes to God/myself/whatever during church (when i actually make it lol) as a way of both 1. keeping my adhd mind busy, and 2. engaging with my own spiritual practice outside of reading shit on queer theology twitter.

currently obsessed with: Disco Elysium, which is about the most poorly-timed obsession in my personal history of Getting Really Into Something. boyfriend cut jeans, because as much as i fucking hate that name, the combination of being able to find them in my size while they’re actually cut like men’s jeans is an allure i cannot resist. also, FAT BEAR WEEK, THE BEST OF ALL ANIMAL-RELATED WEEKS.

I'm currently going through a sort of "EM in Johto saga" right now in my head. Ellis Magnolia (revamp) going to Johto to see Clair and getting caught in all sorts of shenanigans.

Some of these shenanigans include:

- Flying on Reshiram with Falkner. Ellis' Swanna, Dragonite, Swoobat, and Yanmega join in on the flying party.

- Ellis training with his fighting types alongside Chuck. Guile [lucario] accidentally breaks the arm of Chuck.

- Ellis' leavanny, Autumnn, making shirts for Bugsy with her silk.

- Morty burning incense and accidentally setting Ellis' lap on fire.

- Lance and Ellis shooting the shit (or to converse about stuff) in a hot spring. Five feet apart because ones not gay (Lance is gay, Ellis is gray-ace).

- Ellis not understanding proper etiquette in the Ecruteak Dance Theater (the one with Kimono girls) and him crying out of embarrassment. Both Morty and one of the girls consoles him.

- Ellis playing guitar to all the gym leaders plus heath and lance. He sings American Pie while Falkner joins in on the piano and heath on drums. Everybody sings during the chorus. It is a fun time.

- Ellis, Clair, and Lance decide to go skinny dipping in the Lake of Rage for shits and giggles, plus it would be a sort of rite of passage for Ellis to become a "truly powerful dragon trainer". Ellis doesn't really get much respect as a dragon trainer, so he joins in to finally get said respect.

Ellis is a Poison-type trainer, with her main partner Pokemon being a Scolipede. Ginger-blonde hair.

Paige is a Fighting-type trainer, and her main partner Pokemon is a Machamp, which is a larger variety (think of Alphas from PLA). Green hair.

Ellis and Paige are childhood friends who grew up in Floccesy Town, Unova. However Paige was born in Goldenrod, Johto.

My Favorite Reads of 2020

I read quite a bit in 2020, so I wanted to share some of my favorite books and fics.

I work in the teen department of my library, so I read a lot of YA. I think that fic and YA are looked down on for similar reasons: both are supposedly the domain of teenage girls, childish and of dubious quality. I’ve definitely read YA novels that were no better than fic, and I’ve also definitely read fic that was better than most YA novels I’ve encountered. Fic can be more thought-provoking than one might assume, and YA can be way more salacious than one might assume. YA has gotten way cooler and way higher quality than what was available when I was a teen ... and so has fic!

That said, not all of my favorite reads of 2020 were YA, but a lot of them were. Go read some of these--it’s good for your brain.

Mainstream Fiction

Elatsoe by Darcie Little Badger

Genres: Young Adult, fantasy, mystery

Two words: ghost dog!! In a version of the US that’s a lot like ours but more magical, Ellie (short for Elatsoe) is a Lipan-Apache girl who can raise the ghosts of animals from the dead. When her cousin is murdered, she has to go toe-to-toe with the elites of Willowbee, TX to get justice for her family.

The Little Drummer Girl by John LeCarre

Genres: political fiction, romance

Copied from the original summary: You want to catch the lion, first you tether the goat. Patron Saints of Nothing by Randy Ribray

Dread Nation by Justine Ireland

Genres: Young Adult, Horror, historical fiction

In this book, the Civil War was ended not because the north won but because the dead rose from the battlegrounds. Now, the dangerous work of fighting the undead falls to black and brown folks while the white folks hide behind the safety of the walls. Balancing humor against cutting commentary on race in US, this story kicks so much ass.

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

Genres: Fantasy, novella

Keywords: LBGT (non-binary), ancient China (kind of)

A cleric records the history of an empire newly fallen and remade, cutting back and forth in time between the present and the recollections of Rabbit, former handmaiden to the empress.

This fic takes to heart the idea that pokemon don’t tell lies and then gives the pokemon a platform to speak, making a case for “N was right.” It asks pointed questions about sacrifice, consent, personhood, and what it means to be a hero. Come to have your heart broken, stay for gardens and maybe a yogurt cup.

The Suicune’s Choice by An Author’s Pen

Don’t let the title fool you: it is Hoenn fic (with some Johto mythology). It’s about a sweet boy at the end of his training career who has a religious epiphany at the worst possible moment (OR the best one?) and ends up on a path of no return.

Poppy the leafeon doesn’t want much: to spend time with her friend Lavender and to take care of the natural world. But the Guild’s attitude towards conservation (it’s not interested) forces her to take a much more aggressive approach to protect what she loves.

Farla’s speciality is using canon details to shed light on the fridge horror canon implies but sweeps under the rug. Bonnibel is a good trainer and she’s having a great time. And lots of snacks. A misery tour of Alola with delicious darkness.

what’s up, i’m ellie. 24, your local goth with a soulsucking job and a desperate need for something to take my mind off it. i’ve been roleplaying for a good twelve or thirteen years now, ever since ye olde neoboards days. currently looking for something long-term, preferably over email, maybe discord. right now work is awful and exhausting and i honestly just need something chill. my word count usually runs 400-700 per post, longer when applicable, but lately i’m so braindead that i’d love something comfortable where we just throw a couple easy paragraphs back and forth. i can promise a reply once a week, more if things are calm, and i’ll try to let you know if it looks like i’m gonna go AWOL. i also like to chat ooc and share playlists and whatnot!

anyway i’m super flexible about post length and reply times. i don’t really have any content sensitivities or limits or whatever, but i’m not into writing out scat, bestiality or non-con lmao. now smut is fine to an extent, i just don’t want it to be the focus or anything. i’m a huge sucker for romance and pining and longing glances across the room and all that good stuff, though. of course, if you have any limits just let me know. i’d prefer it if you’re 21+.

persona: right now i’m head over heels for persona 3 and persona 5. i’d like to play yusuke against ren or akechi, or shinjiro against akihiko.

i've got a couple ideas for shinji/aki, then detective/thief for akechi/yusuke is another something i'd like to give a try. yusuke/ren is my p5 otp so i'm pretty much open to anything for them, be it in-game, post-game, canon-divergent, au or whatever.

speaking of which, AU’s i’m always down for include: arcana swap, vampire shit, high/low fantasy, period pieces, apocalypse, arranged marriages, a variety of other video games, etc. just hit me up.

pokémon: recently started playing platinum again to decompress, would be interested in playing rival trainers, or a villain team leader against, well, any role you'd want to explore. my favorite regions are johto, unova and kalos.

New Girl

This is pretty rough and unedited, but I wanted to post it before midnight because it’s my girl Whitley’s birthday today and I had to celebrate somehow. I always kinda wondered why Whitley became friends with Yuko, Yuki, and Maya, and I’ve been thinking a lot about friendships lately, so...here’s a piece that’s all about finding a friend.

It had been a disastrous first day for Whitley.

She had only just introduced herself to the class when the teacher, Mr. Cheren, announced that the class would be having a Pokemon battle tournament. She expected that there would be Pokemon battles at the Trainers’ School, but on her first day? Just her luck.

Whitley hadn’t been trying very hard in her first two battles, but it turned out that she didn’t need to. Her first two opponents were ridiculously weak. Then, her final opponent had been relying on an advanced strategy to use Sigilyph’s Psycho Shift to pass off the badly poisoned status condition to the opposing Pokemon. However, Foongy’s immunity to being poisoned threw her off her game, and Whitley got so excited by accidentally outsmarting her opponent that she forgot to try to lose.

So she’d won the girls’ tournament, and her prize? A Pokedex. As if learning to be a Pokemon Trainer wasn’t bad enough, now she was tasked with filling the device that was the epitome of everything that N stood against. Her only consolation was that it didn’t seem like her classmates resented her for winning the tournament…yet.

But even if they didn’t resent her, would they actually want to be friends with her? Whitley didn’t know how to make friends; she had been hoping that one of the other girls would invite her into their friend group. Either that or try to befriend her roommate…but she’d been given a single room, so that was out of the question.

She was so not looking forward to tomorrow.

Tomorrow came, and along with it their first class of the day: status condition studies, with Mr. Otoha. Whitley made sure to arrive early so she could have her choice of seating, and she made a beeline for an empty desk in the back of the room. Hopefully, she wouldn’t draw unwanted attention back here.

Unfortunately, it was not to be. As more students filtered into the classroom, one girl looked straight at Whitley and headed towards her. Whitley ducked her head and pretended to be immensely interested in the schedule on her desk, hoping the girl would ignore her. It didn’t work.

“Hey! Whitley, right?”

Whitley slowly drew her head up and made eye contact with the girl, who had sat down at the desk in front of Whitley. She was blonde and had her hair in a ponytail, and she wore a blue visor with a blue-and-white T-shirt. All in all, Whitley judged her to be the sporty, athletic type.

“Um…yeah,” Whitley said in response to her question.

“Cool! I just wanted to say congrats on winning the tournament yesterday,” the girl said, grinning widely. “I’m Yuki, by the way. Nice to meet you!”

“Um, nice to meet you too,” Whitley replied.

“Hey, so I was wondering, do you want to have lunch with me and my friends today?” Yuki asked.

“I, um…what?” Whitley stammered. It was exactly what she had wanted, and yet it was so sudden. It seemed almost too good to be true.

Before Yuki could respond, another girl approached them from behind. “Yuki, you’re in my seat,” the girl said, folding her arms crossly. She had short brown hair and wore a white wrap shirt, and Whitley recognized her as her final opponent from the previous day’s tournament.

Yuki rolled her eyes. “There aren’t assigned seats here, Ellie,” she said, but she stood up and let the other girl have the seat anyways. Then she turned back to Whitley. “So, what do you say? Lunch or nah?”

Whitley blinked a couple of times, but eventually nodded. It was what she’d wanted, anyways. “Great! Meet me in the caf. I’ll introduce you to the rest of the girls there.”

As Yuki walked back up the aisle to a different seat, the girl in front of Whitley turned around to face her. “Hey. I’m Ellie,” she said. She glanced briefly in Yuki’s direction before leaning an arm on Whitley’s desk and saying in a low voice, “Just between you and me, you do not want to be friends with Yuki and those girls. They’re shallow, and they don’t take battling seriously at all.” Ellie paused thoughtfully. “If you want to hang out with someone worth your while, meet me in the library at lunch. You can eat in there, and it’s much quieter than the cafeteria. It’s right across from it; you can’t miss it.”

Whitley nodded slowly as Ellie turned back to the front of the classroom. She couldn’t believe her luck now – in the span of just a few minutes, two different people invited her to have lunch with them. Maybe she was wrong to think that her peers would resent her for winning the tournament. So now she was faced with a different problem: which invitation should she accept?

Ellie obviously didn’t hold Yuki and her friends in high esteem. But the reasons why Ellie didn’t like them – “shallow” and “don’t take battling seriously at all” – seemed kind of comforting to Whitley. In fact, Ellie’s opinion of them reminded her of a comment she’d overheard one of the guys making…she didn’t know his name, but he had spiky blue hair. If he and Ellie were friends, she definitely didn’t want to hang out with Ellie – the spiky-haired boy was kinda intimidating.

However, Ellie hadn’t said anything about eating with friends. If it was just the two of them, it would give her the opportunity to get to know Ellie a lot better. She didn’t know how many friends Yuki would have, but if she was an athlete, she would probably have a lot. Whitley might get introduced to everyone, but it was unlikely that she’d be able to get a word in among a big group of girls.

In the end, when lunch period rolled around, Whitley headed to the library. Ellie was waiting for her by the entrance, and she had a big smile on her face when Whitley saw her. “You came!” she said, a little more eagerly than she meant to.

Whitley bit her lip and looked at the ground. “Yes, but…” Ellie’s grin faded. “I just wanted to thank you for the invitation,” she said, fighting the instinct to turn tail and run out of the awkward situation. “I’m grateful that you thought of me, but…I think I’m going to sit with Yuki and the others today. It’s nothing against you!” she added quickly.

Ellie sighed. “I get it,” she said, pressing her lips together. “No, really, I do. You’re new here, and you’d rather be social with a big group of people than hang out with one other girl in the library. It’ll probably be better for you in the long run.” She patted Whitley on the back. “Go ahead. Enjoy your lunch.”

“I’m sorry…”

“No, seriously. It’s okay. You do you, girl.”

“Maybe another day?”

“Maybe another day,” Ellie echoed, cracking a little smile. She waved goodbye as Whitley exited the library and began looking for Yuki.

Eventually, it was Yuki who found Whitley – she called her name and waved her over to a table in the center of the cafeteria. Whitley hurried over to the table and was surprised to find it occupied by only three other girls. One was Yuki, obviously, and the other two were girls that Whitley kinda remembered seeing around Yuki before. The smaller of the two girls had reddish-brown hair that she pulled into a small ponytail on the top of her head, styled in such a way that it looked like a sprout. The other had light brown hair a little shorter than Ellie’s, and she smelled strongly of Honey.

“Hey! You made it!” Yuki exclaimed as Whitley sat down. “Did you get lost or something?”

“Um, something like that.”

“Hi! I’m Yuko!” the sprout-haired girl exclaimed, sticking out her hand for Whitley to shake. “Nice to meet you!”

“And I’m Maya,” the Honey-scented girl said.

“It’s good to meet you all,” Whitley said politely.

“Okay, first off, can I just say that I am sooo jealous that you got to hold Blake’s hand when you were getting your Pokedex yesterday?” Yuko said.

“I wish he would hold my hand like that!” Yuki exclaimed. “And look into my eyes, and say my name in that dreamy way of his, and tell me he loves me…”

“Oh, Yuki, we all know that if he’s gonna do that to anyone, it’ll be you,” Maya assured her.

“Of course,” Yuki declared. “Maybe he’ll do it on our field trip next week!”

“Ooh, that’s right, I totally forgot about the field trip next week!” Yuko said. “Did they ever announce where we’re gonna go?”

“Nope, they want it to be a surprise,” Yuki said. “I’m hoping we’ll go to Join Avenue. There are so many cute shops there…have you ever been, Whitley?”

Whitley blinked. “Um, no, I haven’t,” she said.

“We have to take you there sometime!” Yuki declared. “My favorite shop is the salon. I bring Wingull there for a grooming every month.”

“I haven’t been since my birthday,” Maya said.

Whitley boldly jumped into the conversation. “When is your birthday, Maya?” she asked.

“August twenty-fourth,” Maya chuckled. “When is yours?”

“Yeah, when is your birthday, Whitley?” Yuko asked.

“September sixteenth,” Whitley answered.

“Wow, that’s really soon!” Yuko exclaimed. “We’ve gotta get started on getting you presents!”

“Oh, that’s really not necessary…”

“Of course it is,” Yuki asserted. “We’re your friends, and friends get each other presents.”

Whitley’s eyes widened a little. “We’re…friends?”

“Yes, we’re friends, silly,” Yuko laughed. “You’re not a jerk, and you agreed to have lunch with us. What more do we need?”

“I…I just, um…”

“You weren’t expecting to make friends this quickly?” Yuki guessed. “The three of us, we’ve all been there. We were all the new girl at one point or another. I spent my first year at the Striation City Trainers’ School, but then we moved, and my parents decided to send me here instead.”

“I moved here from Johto four years ago,” Yuko said.

“And I just came here last year,” Maya said.

“We know how it feels to be the new girl, so we want to make the experience better for you,” Yuki finished.

Whitley felt a little overwhelmed by the three girls’ kindness, and she felt tears start to well up in her eyes.

“Huh? Whitley, what’s wrong?” Maya asked worriedly.

“N-nothing’s wrong,” Whitley sniffled, attempting to dry her eyes. “Nothing’s wrong at all…”

“Then why are you crying?”

“Because…because…thank you. Thank you so much…”
