First, I want to thank @tackytigerfic for their post that led me to this fic. I’m so glad you provided me with an opportunity to find it, read it, and love it.
where all the veins meet by @saxamophone (146,134 words, rated E)
I know there’s a lot of demand for eight year fics that give representation to realistic trauma, and I think I’ve found THE fic for those who are interested in that. Technically, it mostly takes place at Grimmauld, in the summer between the battle and eighth year, but somehow I feel like this makes it even more of an eighth year fic than some that take place solely at Hogwarts. This in between stage of life and the uncertainty of the future are staples of eighth year fics, and this one might have just become one of my favorite in this category.
First, this fic let the characters be both fun and broken. Ginny Weasley who is terribly sad and therefore a little mean but also the life of the party. Dean and Seamus that are so in love with each other, so sure in their knowledge of the stability of that love, that nothing can shake them. Pansy who simultaneously doesn’t want to be alive because life can be so, so hard but also fiercely loves life and wants a future. Neville, soft and shy but steadfast (and literally the hottest of hot).
Secondly, the characters all love each other - deeply and messily and sometimes unhealthily when they don’t like each other, but they are a family of their own bound together by love and understanding and forgiveness.
Is this a fic about Harry and Draco getting together? Yes. Is this also a fic with an interesting adventure and problems left behind by Dumbledore that must still be solved? Yes! And the problem/solution of that plot makes the romance that much more interesting.
Lastly, this fic features a quiet, private world just for Harry and Draco to look at art. A place for them to grow from the boys forced into a war into the men they will choose to be in the aftermath. It’s anger and grief are real and tangible, but so is the hope and love.
❤️ As always, if you find a fic you enjoy, please remember to leave the author a kudos or a comment! ❤️
Lots of Love and Happy Reading!

A Wizard’s Guide to Co-Parenting with Your Ex-Arch Nemesis
read it here on ao3
Harry had expected a few things when returning for his Eighth Year. Rooming with Ron, a cheeky Firewhisky down at the pub, leaving his assignments to the last minute – those were all but certain to occur.
His list of certainties definitely hadn’t included McGonagall’s shake-up of the curriculum, which tasked the Eighth Years with the responsibility of parenthood for three weeks. Caring for a baby Transfigured from a sack of flour would have been alright if: 1) Malfoy wasn’t Harry’s assigned partner, 2) Their baby’s one goal in life wasn’t to spite Harry, and 3) Malfoy wasn’t infuriatingly good at fake parenthood.

Summary:
Draco’s back at Hogwarts by court order. Harry’s back for no particular reason at all. Some things change, some stay the same. Neither expects to spend eighth-year living in close quarters, playing rugby (poorly), staying up late, sneaking around, and finally figuring it all out.
Excerpt:
“I’ve ruined the fun,” Draco says.
“Yeah, sorry about that,” Harry says.
“Why are you apologising?”
“I invited you.”
“True. It’s definitely your fault that I was a teen fascist and my peers hate me,” Draco says dryly.
Harry nods, distracted. Draco surveys the room. Romilda is attempting to redirect people into a game of Spin the Bottle. Draco scoots back further.
Harry follows him back towards the wall and asks, “D’you want to get out of here?”
Draco’s mouth drops open. He snaps it shut. “Sure.”
“Right,” Harry says. He pushes himself to his feet and holds out a hand to haul Draco up too. His palm is dry against Draco’s clammy skin.
They walk swiftly towards the Chapel door. Harry turns the dial to black and they step out into the castle.
“Where does the black door lead?” Draco asks, trying to get his bearings in the dim corridor. He always exits the Chapel to the outdoors and walks across the lawns to the main doors that lead to the Great Hall.
“Not sure,” Harry says. “Hermione says it’s different every time.”
“How is that useful?”
“It doesn’t have to be useful. It’s magic.” Harry goes and sits in an alcove near a tapestry depicting a knight and a princess. Draco follows him.
Harry produces the bottle of tequila from Romilda’s game. He uncaps it and takes a sip then passes it to Draco. The mouth of the bottle is warm against Draco’s lips. He drinks dizzily, the first time he’s ever had tequila.
“I can’t believe she was trying to get people to play Spin the Bottle,” Harry says.
“I can’t believe everyone just gamely sat down for Truth or Dare.” Draco passes the bottle to Harry, who sets it on the weathered flagstones. Draco’s sleeve is still rolled up.
“That’s quite nasty, isn’t it?” Harry says, pointing to the Dark Mark.
“It makes for an okay reminder,” Draco says.
“Of what you were?” Harry asks, absurdly generous.
Draco has to take a breath. “Of who I want to be.”
Harry takes a swig of tequila, his lips shiny and wet around the glass.
“So you don’t fancy anyone at Hogwarts?” Draco asks, changing the subject, possessed briefly by some bravery he doesn’t know he had. He regrets the question the instant he asks it, the words hanging in the draughty air.
Harry ducks his head. “I… didn’t say that.”
“Ah, who’s the lucky girl then?”
“I didn’t say it was a girl, did I?” Harry asks, cheeky, then horrified.
“Oh. Are you– Do you fancy someone who’s not a girl?” Draco’s heart beats a tattoo against his rib cage.
“I–“ Harry starts and stops. “Maybe.”
The bubble of hope returns to Draco’s chest, larger now. “Have you ever kissed someone who’s not a girl?”
“No,” Harry says quickly. Then slower, quieter, “But, I think I would. Given the chance.” His eyes are massive and bright behind his glasses. Draco doesn’t know when he starts leaning forward, but once he does, he can’t stop. He tilts his head and lets Harry close the distance.
They kiss, close-mouthed and soft, the aching sweetness permeating through Draco when Harry pulls away looking dazed. They part for only a second and then Harry leans back in, his hand cupping the side of Draco’s face, fingers splaying over his neck.
Harry’s mouth is warm and wet and he tastes like liquor. Draco can’t get enough.
When they part again, Draco’s face is hot and his heart hasn’t stopped pounding and he can’t help but laugh at how strange his life has become. That he’s snogging Harry Potter in a deserted Hogwarts corridor, that he never wants to stop.
“Why are you laughing? It’s like you’ve never been kissed,” Harry says.
Draco touches his bottom lip, unable to keep himself from smiling. “I haven’t.”
Harry scrunches his nose and laughs too. They’re still sitting very close, Draco’s knees brushing against Harry’s.
“Are you– D’you want to–” Harry starts to say, but he’s already swaying into Draco’s space, crowding him, and there’s no need to say anything else.
They kiss and kiss until Draco’s lips go numb. Harry’s fingers find their way under Draco’s shirt, cold against his stomach. Draco wraps his arms around Harry’s neck and just holds on.
Eventually a strange noise breaks them apart. An hour could have passed or maybe five minutes. Draco can’t be sure.
“Mrs Norris,” Harry says, hoarsely.

The Romantic Prawn Who Loved Christmas by bixgirl1
Summary:
When Draco, forced into sharing a room with Potter for the year, finds out that Potter has a sleepwalking problem, he expects the odd conversations and the weird games of chess.
What comes as a complete shock are Potter's other activities...And why he seems so intent on having Draco join him.
(Relax. It's just like a holiday Hallmark movie! ...With, uhm, sleepwanking.)

My Thoughts: This might be an unseasonably late rec. But anytime is a good time for a Christmas story. The Romantic Prawn Who Loved Christmas is a delightfully funny story that has awakened my appreciation for sleepwanking! The intimate scenes had me howling, and the sweet scenes warmed my heart. My face hurt from how much this story made me smile~

Dramione Eighth Year Recommendations - Part One
Eighth year is one of my most favorite tropes. I just love the idea of these characters in a familiar setting post-battle. I’ve shared many of my favorite eighth-year recommendations in three posts. I hope you find some favorites!
Part One includes 40+ fics under 5k words—and in this case, good things come in small packages.
Indulge Me by @millennialgrandma. M, 1k. A little eighth year Veritaserum-fueled confession of feelings.
Tentative Exporations by @dreamsofdramione. E, 1.2k. What Draco lacks in finesse he makes up for in enthusiasm.
First Kiss(es) and the Path to Forgiveness by ak1494_millennialgrandma. T, 1.2k. Returning to Hogwarts for an eighth year felt like penance. Kissing Hermione Granger felt like redemption.
a cure for headaches by @whimsymanaged. E, 1.3k. Hermione has a headache. Draco has a suggestion. (Hint: It's not a pain potion.)
What To Do by @willhavetheirtrinkets. E, 1.8k. "I can," she said, smirking at him. "I have that authority. Since you're always going at it quick and hurried, without the slightest attention to detail, I've been given the authority to make certain it's done properly."
Draco ground his teeth. "You can't tell me what to do, Granger."
Mutually Assured Destruction… by @grangerdangerfics. T, 1.9k. As Head Girl Hermione Granger and Head Boy Draco Malfoy wage an escalating war of aggressive acts of kindness, will it spell ruin ... or romance?
My Brown-Eyed Girl by @pacific-rimbaud. M, 2.1k. Draco and Hermione have a lazy snuggle in the grass behind the Quidditch pitch.
Two Full Inches Above Regulation Length by granger_danger. E, 2.1k. “Granger.” Malfoy’s voice was an ember in the dark corridor. He grasped her wrist and she almost dropped her jar of bluebell flames. “Your skirt’s not to the bottom of your knees. I may have to take points from Gryffindor.”
Hermione rolled her eyes, though she doubted the Head Boy could see it. What nerve he had. As though he hadn’t hoarsely begged her to hem her skirt while he was still inside of her just last week.
Never Have I Ever by @niffizzle. M, 2.1k. With a bottle of firewhisky, a set of enchanted cups, and a game of Never Have I Ever, things turn interesting during one of the final days leading up to graduation. But just how much will be divulged? Maybe some things should stay private.
A Whole New World by @simplifiedemotions. T, 2.2k. “Malfoy,” pleaded Granger, and oh, she was good. That pout was doing something ruinous to his insides, but he denied her.
“Come on, up-up, Granger—”
Or: Draco takes Hermione out flying.
Passing Notes by @sodamnradd. T, 2.3k. D: Pay you 10 galleons to cover patrol tonight
H: STOP throwing notes at me ferret. And no.
D: 50 galleons?
and so ensues a term of note-passing between Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger
This Time Tomorrow by sodamnrad. M, 2.5k. On the last night of school, Draco's unchecked feelings for Granger spill through the cracks.
A Different Kind of Magic by @canttouchthis87. T, 2.5k. Draco Malfoy watched Hermione Granger practice her Viola for six years. Returning to Hogwarts after the war, her music offers them both a place of freedom and sanctuary.
A Thousand Ways to Say Sorry by @wordswithways. T, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy goes on a gift-giving apology tour.
Lessons in Darkened Rooms by @raven-m-3. E, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy's eighth year at Hogwarts should have been simple, if unpleasant. Instead he finds himself grappling with a Granger-shaped problem.
Passing Notes by @shamione. E, 2.6k. Draco Malfoy has teased Hermione Granger for the last time, tucked away in an alcove with his fingers buried deep inside her. But her attempt to get back at him in Transfiguration is interrupted by none other than Professor McGonagall. Everything that happens after could easily be considered the most embarrassing moment of Hermione's life.
Draco’s Consolation Prize by emilyinwonderland. E, 2.8k. Head Girl Hermione Granger comforts a moody Slytherin Quidditch Captain.
Just Desserts by @thelashjedi. M, 2.8k. Why would you talk to me?  Draco thought, behind a heavy wall of occlusion as he politely, but rotely declined the Head Girl’s offer to join her in the Great Hall, at the newly mixed tables set up in the wake of the war.
Deal by @its-banannaz. E, 3.3k It was all a stupid deal, and why she made a deal with Draco Malfoy of all people? She had absolutely no idea. Suffice to say, she lost the game.
Just Like the Ones I Used to Know by @acciomjolnir. T, 3.4k. It's 8th year, post war, and Hermione isn't feeling in the Christmas spirit. She's not the only one who has chosen not to go home for the holidays... and when they get into the eggnog, all kinds of things happen.
Where You Belong by @ecaworks, raven_maiden. E, 3.4k. When Draco Malfoy shows up at the Burrow over the holidays, Hermione learns she has a decision to make.
Third Time’s a Charm by @monsterleadmehome. E, 3.4k. Head Girl Hermione Granger has been hopelessly trying to seduce Head Boy Draco Malfoy all term, but he just won't get the hint. Frustrated with her efforts, she tries one last resort—ordering lingerie from a Muggle catalog.
Respite by canttouchthis. T, 3.5k. Hermione Granger is fine. Or at least there’s no reason for her not to be. But still, she finds respite under the stars, drawn to the night sky.
Mutually Assured Destruction by witchsoup. M, 3.5k. Hermione and Theo find ways to break it to each other gently... it's time to break up.
Metals by @mycatalrhythm. E, 3.6k. After a month of not seeing new piercings appear on his body, Hermione was about to give up and just assumed he stopped getting new ones—until she heard Theo telling everyone that Draco has stopped getting piercings after his fifth one a few weeks ago.
She counted. Ear, navel, lip, tongue.
That's only four though?
at the coffee table by sodamnrad. M, 3.7k. Draco is the only Slytherin to return for eighth-year. Hermione is the only classmate who doesn't avoid him. Studying together in the common room, at the coffee table which becomes exclusively theirs, feelings for one another begin to unthaw.
Kiska by @senlinyu. M, 4k. In which Hermione has cat ears in 8th Year and Draco finds out.
Perfect by @kyonomiko. M, 4k. A very lonely 8th year through the eyes of Draco Malfoy. Everyone else seems to be getting along swimmingly.
Flying Lessons by cryptaknight. T, 4.1k Draco is surprised when Hermione turns to him for flying lessons, but then everything is a little bit different upon their return to Hogwarts after the war.
Study Habits by @indreamsink. E, 4.1k. The night before their last NEWT exam, Draco can't focus. Hermione devises an unorthodox method to help him study.
What We Didn't Do by @charlipetidei. M, 4.3k. Who? Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy. Where? The Room of Requirement. Why? Seven Minutes in Heaven, of course. What? Well… who’s to say?
The Hogwarts Express by sam_fic. NR, 4.3k. “Draco Malfoy.” The way she said his name was almost reverent, but they both knew better.
“I can leave,” he suggested, without actually meaning it.
Her reluctance to interact with idolizers likely paled in comparison to his fear of being avada-ed by overzealous second-years.
But Hermione wasn’t one to make things easy for other people.
“Then, leave,” she replied, raising an eyebrow.
Coming Down by raven_maiden, @nikitajobson. E, 4.4k. Of all the things Hermione thought she'd learn at Hogwarts her eighth year, Draco Malfoy is by far the most unexpected.
No Death To This by maeshowers. M, 4.4k. The quicksilver of his eyes are piercing my entire being—like he can see everything that’s inside and wants a piece of it anyways. Despite my flaws, despite it all. He can have every part of me for all I care. It was only ever going to be his to begin with.
You Make It So Good I Don't Want to Leave by slytheringheights. E, 4.4k. It's late at night on the Tuesday before the big Potions exam and Draco can't find his textbook. When the Head Boy goes to the Head Girl's door to ask if she's seen his book, he hears the most intoxicating sounds from behind her door.
“Oh yes, please. Yes, right there, Draco…”
The Bowtruckles and the Beasts by @purplesugarquills. E, 4.6k. Molly Weasley brandished a copy of The Bowtruckles and the Beasts in one hand and a ripe, yellow banana in the other. Hermione could only blink, moments away from receiving The Talk from her ex-boyfriend’s mother.
This was, as so many things tended to be, all Ginny Weasley’s fault.
Somebody To You by @leilahmoon. M, 4.6k. Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy are idiots. Luckily, their friends are not.
Arithmancy and Quidditch by @grace-lou-freebush. E, 4.7k. Hermione and Draco are partners on an Arithmancy project during their eighth year, but Draco fails to meet up at their agreed upon time. When Hermione finds him down at the Quidditch pitch, she just might change her mind about how upset she is.
Baker’s Dozen by @darkofthemoonfic, Maria81. T, 4.8k. As part of the new and mandatory Muggle Studies curriculum, 8th year students are paired together for a year-long practicum in the culinary arts. If only Draco were interested in either.
Strange Birds by @heyjude19-writing. M, 4.9k. Her gaze is encouraging, and Draco can do nothing but linger on the precipice of terrible want with remarkable self-restraint.
She’s right here; solid and real and welcoming. Slipping through his undeserving fingers. Is he allowed a trauma timeline? He has no idea when it’s appropriate for him to reach suffering’s endpoint and move on.
He’s a thestral with a beating wounded wing, still desperate to fly for her, to her.
Transparency by @mightbewriting. T, 4.9k. In which Draco and Hermione slowly come together in their eighth year, as observed by a ghost.
And a few of my own:
From Spark to Flame G, 500 words. Head Boy/Head Girl, Egg (Baby) Project
Fair’s Fair E, 1k. Draco brings one of Hermione's fantasies to life.
A Quiet Christmas Eve E, 2.5k. It's Christmas Eve, and a handful of eighth-year students are having a sleepover in the common room. Draco wakes Hermione up, but she'll need to be quiet for what he has in mind.
Pop on over to Part Two or Three (and feel free to check the Master List of Recommendations if you’re seeing this as a reblog, because I’ll keep my lists updated there as I have new recs to add).

"Draco pushed himself up and rested his head between his knees, and if Potter asked him if he was okay he didn't hear it. His head was buzzing and his stomach felt sour and he knew, as he hid behind the curtain of his hair, that there was no going back from this. That something unfortunate and wonderful had just happened, and he'd never be the same."
🍃 The July Tree by @oknowkiss (51K, E, 9-24-2022) Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail… nor well-meaning friends, nor questionable communication skills, nor seven years of hating each other’s guts can keep Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from falling in love. OR: It’s Eighth Year, and Harry Potter has detention. What else is new? Well, since you asked: Greenhouse Four and the Tree of Life, for a start, and then there’s the new shared Eighth Year common room, and Harry’s sexuality, and these pesky dreams he keeps having about a blond man pushing him into things…
Much like Harry in The July Tree, "I can't just be normal about what I like" and boy oh boy is this fic one of those things. I have my favorite tropes, but I also adore when fics outside said tropes swoop in and knock me over at the knees. This eighth year jewel box of a story did that for me!
This is one difficult, passionate, transformative year in the lives of two boys on the cusp of adulthood who are figuring it out as they go. Lucky for us, we get to go with them. Featuring one (1) moody, semi-carnivorous tree, dual perspectives, sexy smoking, existential terror, "marathon shame wanks," Scottish sight-seeing, and as many moments of hilarity as there are starbursts of warmth and loveliness. (More effusive praise and a mild discussion of plot points under the cut)
I knew this would be a reread for me soon after staring the first chapter. There is just so much to love here. The PINING. The genuine MALICE they have for each other that evolves into understanding and affection. The way that it's as much a journey of self-acceptance as it is a chronicle of falling in love with another person. We get to spend time in both Harry and Draco's minds in such a way that each POV enhances the experience of reading the other.
I am not sure I could pick a favorite scene, but the one where they listen to music together took my breath away, and everything leading up to and including the train ride was monumentally lovely. I loved the smaller character details as well (glow up Neville, anyone else? Ginny FURIOUS that she's been sent flowers? That's canon.) @oknowkiss is a master of immersive, atmospheric prose and that skill is blazingly on display here. And now I'm excited to read it again, run don't walk to read it too.

Do you have any recs for Drarry struggling with trauma or ptsd during 8th year? Please and thank you!
Hello! Your holds have arrived!
I took the liberty of giving you MORE RECS and splitting this rec list into two parts! Be sure to check out last week's list for the first part of these recs!
Eighth Year + Trauma 2
A Sliver of Hope by @goldentruth813 (539 words, rated G)
Draco doesn't have much to offer, but he'll gladly share what he does have.
say something by @gallifrey1sburning (1,190 words, rated M)
“The world I was raised for is dead,” he stated, his voice flat. “And good riddance, I suppose, but there’s no place for me here. I was molded to ascend in a society that burned. It might have been better if I had burned with it.”
Destination: Healing by @stargazing-enby (2,027 words, rated T)
As much as he refused to think about it, the truth was something in Harry’s chest unravelled in those dawn-hued moments of quiet when his body was heavy against the bathroom door frame, the Cloak heavy on his shoulders, and his gaze heavier than any of the two on the rise and fall of Malfoy’s breathing.
The Swallows Will Return by @thisbloodycat (4,621 words, rated E)
Harry wasn’t sure what he’d expected from life after the war—peace, obviously, maybe a sense of accomplishment—but it certainly hadn’t been this.
to be a bit of warmth (for you) by @softlystarstruck (9,304 words, rated M)
As some of the only eighth years to return to Hogwarts, Harry doesn't know how he and Draco will manage to be roommates for a whole year without resorting to violence. But Draco is too quiet, and too thin, and wears layers of sweaters that he tucks over his fingers. So they fall into an unspoken routine, one that soothes Harry as much as it helps Draco, one that's so much easier than Harry thought it would be.
Until it all falls apart, and Harry realizes he holds the world in his hands.
Dragons Don’t Talk by @rama-thorn (15,805 words, rated T)
In which Harry can't talk, Hermione soon will have a nervous breakdown, Ron's just confused and Draco has some illwishers (and talks a lot).
Cascade by @avonneslovelies (18,738 words, rated M)
Harry wants to touch, and Draco wants to be touched. If only they could figure it out.
Heartache by @bixgirl1 (25,577 words, rated E)
What if the one person you least expect is the only one who really understands what you've gone through?
Inside Your Mind by lazywonderland (36,376 words, rated E)
Goyle's taken it upon himself to act as Malfoy's personal, one-man guard and Harry can't help but feel like it's only making the bullying worse.
The July Tree by @oknowkiss (51,637 words, rated E)
Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail… nor well-meaning friends, nor questionable communication skills, nor seven years of hating each other’s guts can keep Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from falling in love.
Diffraction Patterns (I Don't Know How to Forget You) by @yourdifferentoctober (93,636 words, rated E)
When Harry Potter, of all people, offers to help Draco erase his Dark Mark, he has no choice but to accept. He wants it gone. He wants to forget. He wants to reconstitute the past. Never mind that erasures leave real marks on bodies, real traces on the world in its becoming. This is not how he expected his eighth year to go.

Hogwarts Eight Year - Drarry fic recs( word length- above 50k)
Pt. 2 (short fics)
Bitter Transmutation : Cruel Transformation by DorthyAnn(103k)
The terms of Draco’s probation require him to finish his final year of schooling, he just wants to survive with what little dignity he has left, in face of students that hate him, falling behind on his school work, and all the strange fevers and weakness and changes… that only seem to be getting worse.
Mental by sara_holmes(186k)
Harry has had quite enough of sharing his mind with someone else, thankyouverymuch. A miscast Legilimecy spell says otherwise.
Ex Nihilo (And Other Feats of An Untrained Veela) by Kandakicksass(127k)
Ever since returning to Hogwarts, Harry has had nothing to do with Draco Malfoy, who exists at the bottom of the social ladder and is just trying to survive their "eighth year." One veela presentation (and Harry's natural resistance to veela allure) changes all of that.
Things Worth Knowing by Femme (femmequixotic), noeon (noe)(164k)
After the Battle, Harry thinks he's left Hogwarts for good, but Minerva insists that all students return for an Eighth Year if they wish to sit for NEWTs in the spring, and Harry needs those NEWTs to go into the Aurors. Draco's just grateful not to be in Azkaban. Or the Manor. He's hoping he can steer clear of Potter this year and grapple with his own problems. Unfortunately for him, Potter appears to be one of those problems. And that's not even addressing the fact that Potter's got serious issues of his own, which Draco realises as he's forced to share an Eighth Year dormitory room and several classes with the Gryffindor Git. If only they can make it through the year without killing each other, it should be all right, shouldn't it?
Right Hand Red by lq_traintracks (lumosed_quill)(73k)
Harry felt Malfoy's breath on his lips as they came together over the bottle, hands firmly planted on the floor as though they each needed their familiar soil, refusing to cross into enemy territory. Except that Malfoy no longer felt like his enemy. Malfoy felt inevitable.
Oxytocin by WouldItWere(147k)
Draco Malfoy cannot sleep. If he keeps going like this, he will go mad, or die, or both. For some reason, though, he can sleep whenever Harry Potter is with him. And Harry Potter is nothing if not a helper to those in need.
when evil blooms by thedoomofvalyria(83k)
Harry wanted a normal 8th year, but the mysterious and beautiful flowers growing around the castle have other ideas. They're up to something. And so is Draco Malfoy.
Nyctophilia by prolonged_autumn(107k)
Everyone's back for 8th year, and Harry and his friends seem determined to spend their last year in school running around at night, hyped up on coffee and alcohol and Honeydukes candy, doing all the childish things they didn't have the chance to do before. Draco watches as he's always watched: from afar, quiet and bitter and hopelessly in love. That is, until Pansy decides she's had quite enough of it.
Written on the Heart by who_la_hoop(113k)
Harry doesn’t mind that so many Slytherins from his year have returned to finish their NEWTs, really he doesn’t. It’s just – do they have to be so friendly? He’s not prejudiced, really he’s not. It’s just – they’ve got to be up to something, right? Unnerved by the attention he’s attracting from everyone – the Slytherins are the least of it, to be fair – and struggling with a raft of changes to Hogwarts itself, Harry wishes he could be happy that one constant remains: Draco Malfoy really fucking hates him. When he’s hit by an illegal love-spell though, Harry finds he has more to worry about than whether or not Blaise Zabini actually wants to be his friend. For if everyone affected has been blessed – or cursed, by the look on Malfoy’s face – with a magical tattoo revealing the name of their soulmate, what does it mean that Harry’s skin remains completely bare?
Every New Beginning by fencer_x(140k)
“You curl your lip and wrinkle your nose and sneer and call me Saviour, yet you only seek my help at the eleventh hour. That’s what’s fucked up, Malfoy.” || Draco Malfoy is dead, and Harry is absolutely totally fine with that.
The Promise of Summer by Omi_Ohmy(66k)
How was Harry supposed to know that coming back for eighth year would be so confusing? Everything is the same, and yet not the same. And nowhere is this more obvious than with Draco Malfoy. Harry finds himself once more watching and following Malfoy, trying to work him out. When they are drawn together to heal the castle, Harry doesn’t just find Malfoy - he also finds himself.
The July Tree by oknowkiss(51k)
Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, nor hail… nor well-meaning friends, nor questionable communication skills, nor seven years of hating each other’s guts can keep Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy from falling in love.
White Lies by cassisluna(171k)
Draco drinks a potion that makes him know if a person is lying, and Harry, apparently at fault that Draco is this way, is forced to 'help' him with the effects of the potion. For the first time, they deal with each other with no lies to hide behind.
Helix by Saras_Girl(92k)
Seven months after the end of the war, Harry is feeling lost. Fortunately, he is about to be offered an unexpected and sparkling chance to find himself again.

Summary:
Pale face in paler hands, he is devoid of color. He is only the moonlight. And he wonders if he'll find the sun.
A story about Draco entering a period of change that will either shatter him or enfold him into Harry Potter's world.
(੭ˊ͈ ꒵ˋ͈)੭*⁺˚. * ・ 。゚☆
Excerpt:
Draco stirs, egged on by the vision of the hand still holding his, as if Harry had forgotten all about that. “Harry?”
“Hm?”
“I think Severus respected you, at least in the end. Do you...do you think...your Sirius Black would me?”
Harry leans closer, knocks their shoulders together and draws Draco's attention to him. “Yes, Draco.”
Draco wipes at his brow, slicking the fringe from his eyes. “How so?”
“Draco, if anyone knew the life of someone who made a mistake, got caught up in the wrong thing at the wrong time, and spent years of courage surviving with little of his truth known and appreciated, it was Sirius. He'd know exactly how you feel, and he'd be proud of you for moving forward.”
The wetness in his eyes stings a little as he nods, glancing away and diverting the topic slightly to avoid Harry noticing it. “We're related, you know. Mum's a Black by birth.”
“Oh, yeah! I saw her on the wall. Bellatrix, too.”
“The fabled Grimmauld Place, I take it.”
Harry snickers. “I gave it to the Dumbledore's Army people during the war. Maybe I'll go back to it after Hogwarts. At least...at least I have a home, if I want it, right?”
“Sounds like,” Draco agrees, thinking of the Manor and his mother so isolated.
He moves to stretch and realizes that he's still holding Harry's hand. A deep, lovely flush spreads down the back of his neck and over his ears as he stares down at their hands. Harry follows his gaze and pauses as well, both now focused on the pale and lightly tanned hands twined together, fingers interlaced, thumbs rubbing the backs of respective palms.
Draco isn't going to speak first. Not on his fucking life. But he is smiling to himself.
Harry coughs a little, but doesn't move his hand away at all.
They sit like that for quite a while, held hands seeing both sun and shade from passing white clouds above. Draco and Harry look everywhere but each other at first and then only at each other, and when it begins to sprinkle from a random little grey cloud that has decided to play between the white fluffy ones, they rise, grabbing robes, and run for the castle, hands tight together.
Draco's mind is screaming as he strides down the halls toward the bathroom, knowing he'll need to wash up and cool off before going to dinner. Harry follows at his side, hand still woven with his all the way to the silly door. Draco pauses and gestures with his eyes, his stomach growling not a moment after to signal his intent.
Harry laughs, rubs his thumb clear across Draco's knuckles and squeezes.
Feeling like an absolute idiot, Draco just stands there, blushing and smiling, unsure of what the hell to do when Harry leans forward, licking his lip nervously.
Draco closes his eyes, the little gasp escaping as he feels the soft, wet imprint to his cheek.
And then Harry is gone, no doubt as red faced as Draco is left alone there in the hall.
  •
The little kiss seems to have been magical.
The feeling of it doesn't wipe away when he washes his face, and it's there all through a rather subdued dinner where he says little and Potter talks loads with Longbottom, and Luna Lovegood glances between Draco, who is both bowed close and away from Potter on the bench, and Potter, who is doing the exact same so that their ankles brush awkwardly.
It's there when Draco announces his leave and bumps Potter's shoulder with a smirk, getting a very nice bit of red across the Chosen One's cheeks just for him.
It's there when he lies in the cot wanting to shout with all this excitement in him; he's not sure where it's coming from entirely, but it's in the heat of his chest, the tingle still of his cheek, and the small surge through his body and groin.

Dramione Eighth Year Recommendations - Part Three
Eighth year is one of my most favorite tropes. I just love the idea of these characters in a familiar setting post-battle. I’ve shared many of my favorite eighth-year recommendations in three posts. I hope you find some favorites!
Part Three includes 40+ fics over 10k words.
In Search of Sunrise by @indreamsink. T, 10.4k. Unable and unwilling to walk away from a dare, Hermione is forced to stay up all night with Draco Malfoy. Sometimes, one night is enough to begin to understand a person.
Alternative Medicine by @drpearlgatsby. T, 10.4k. Post-traumatic Hermione and Draco share a common room at Hogwarts. What could go wrong?
us alive, right here, feeling lucky by @malfxys, aster_notz. T, 11.4k. Hermione Granger returns to Hogwarts after a year away in Australia. Draco Malfoy returns to Hogwarts after a year away in Azkaban. And then Hermione starts receiving anonymous packages in the mail.
Alternatively: the one in which they share chocolate, and fall in love.
The Mona Lisa Conundrum by @aetherioswrites. M, 12.5k. Draco is certain Hermione Granger would keep her room the same way she keeps herself. Prim and proper, like the perfect poster prefect she is. She even has the alliteration down. But when he walks into the Head Girl's dorm to find crumpled parchment and empty gin bottles littering the place rather than colour-coded studying schedules, he thinks he might be wrong.
Open Doors by @kyonomiko. T, 13.1k. Hermione starts her holidays off right, a surprise from her parents rekindling one of her old traditions. It's just a shame she has no one to share it with.
A Wager (of sorts) by @ladykenz347. T, 13.8k. Head Boy, Draco Malfoy, and Head Girl, Hermione Granger, decide to settle their endless bickering in a wager... of sorts.
Educating Draco Malfoy by Padfoot the Marauder. E, 14k. After accidentally hearing Hermione getting herself off in the shower, Draco realises that he isn’t the only one pretending to be something he isn’t.
Nothing I Deserve by rubykrishna. E, 15k. “Are you going to keep your head down and ignore me if I kiss you again?” Wisps of her breath fanned up into his face. He released a shaky breath and clenched his fists at his side, aching to touch her.
“You shouldn’t want to kiss me again, Granger.” He tried to sway her, but his argument sounded like a whimper. A slow smile spread to her lips and she quickly dipped her tongue out to wet them.
“But I do.” She said. “And if you’re not going to stop me, who is?”
Splash of Color by Kyonomiko. T, 15.1k. A little bit of fate, a little messed up magic, and Hermione Granger is stuck with a curse pointing her somewhere she never thought to look, bright as a neon sign.
The First Rule of Fight Club... by ladykenz347. M, 15.9k. No one returned for eighth year unphased by the war. The students, it seems, have found a way to heal themselves but it comes with a specific set of rules. The first one is the most important: Hermione Granger is not permitted in Fight Club.
Right Way Down by uselessenglishmajor. E, 16.6k. Draco has a plan. Hermione has a problem.
Hogwarts’ first post-war Head Boy and Head Girl are going to have to work all their issues out.
Learning to Breathe by @frumpologist. M, 17k. Immediately post-war, Hermione realizes that the wizarding world still thinks she’s less than. They may have defeated Voldemort, but his elitist beliefs still plague Britain. She’s returned to Hogwarts for her eighth year, but memories of the war still haunt her. So, when Draco Malfoy approaches her to apologize for the horrible things he’s done to her since first year, despite not believing his sincerity, Hermione accepts his apology. She never expected it to turn into something more.
Sad Eyes by @caitybellfics. E, 17.5k It's their 8th year and Draco had planned to make the most of it. He hadn't expected to be the only person that noticed Hermione Granger was falling apart.
Under the Wings of the Shadow by @acciomjolnir. T, 17.7k. It's after the war, and Hermione finds herself retreating to Hogwarts for eighth year, detached and downtrodden after the events of the war. Few from her year have returned, but due to the terms of his Ministry probation, Draco Malfoy must return. Much to Hermione's chagrin, his terms turn out to have an effect on her living arrangement...
The Seeker by @canttouchthis87. T, 18k. After a life-altering Quidditch accident during his Eighth Year at Hogwarts, Draco Malfoy is forced to reconsider what it means to be alive. As he reluctantly embarks on the journey to recovery, he’s surprised to find he’s not alone.
Wait for Me by @sweetestsorrows. E, 18.1k. As Draco and Hermione struggle to cope in the months after the war, they find comfort in one another. Of course, it's entirely unexpected. The challenging history they share is still so fresh in their memory and there are wounds from the traumas they've endured that have yet to heal. Naturally, there's some anxiety as the two former enemies shift from being partners and friends to discovering that they both harbour feelings for the other. And yet, they learn that only by finding the strength to be vulnerable can they move forward—together.
More than One Way To Win by @scullymurphy. M, 18.3k. “That’s damn near impossible, even for me.” Blaise shook his head. “I think we’ve hit the bar. Is there anyone who would be more difficult to shag?”
His words were hanging in the air when Draco felt a magnificent plan spring fully formed into his mind. Could it work? He thought it could. A grin split his face and he said, “I know someone.”
Stained Glass and Library Stacks by @one-equaltemper. E, 18.4k. Hogwarts students who had their seventh year disrupted were ordered back for an eighth after it's discovered that the toll of the War has begun to change their biologies. Hermione soon realizes that she's drawn to someone she never anticipated being friends with, let alone more.
The Rivalry by @floorcoaster. T, 19.2k. Hermione wants the top spot at Hogwarts. Draco tells her he's going to win it easily. Only one of them can be right.
From your head to your toes by slytheringheights. E, 19.4k. It's the last night at Hogwarts before Hermione, Draco, and the gang have to enter the real world. A party in the Hufflepuff common room is exactly what's needed to break down old rivalries.
The Christmas Admirer by TheMourningMadam. T,  20k. Hermione receives a 'coupling journal' as part of a Hogwarts gift exchange. She finds herself quite taken with the person writing her notes through these journals. What will she do when she discovers the flirty man from the journals' pages is the same shy Slytherin she avoided?
All It Has To Be by @lithelies. E, 22k. Leave it to Hermione Granger to ruin their mutual silence with a (not-very-drunk and very questionable) confession about the Library.
Breaking the Barrier by floorcoaster. T, 22k. The teachers at Hogwarts have instructed the student leaders to plan and coordinate events throughout the year to encourage "Interhouse Unity and Cooperation." Hermione thinks the Valentine's Day scheme is a little ridiculous--but also possibly their best idea yet. There's no telling who she might end up meeting.
Best Shot by AccioMjolnir. M, 23k. It's eighth year and Hermione is trying to navigate her post-war friendship with Draco Malfoy and a relationship with Ron Weasley when she gets an unexpected visit from someone who knows her better than anyone: herself. Thrown back from the future, an older Hermione drops a bombshell on her: she has only three days to set things right, or Draco dies.
Still Frame by in_dreams. M, 25k. While assisting with the rebuilding efforts at Hogwarts, Hermione stumbles across an old book of photographs - and one of them looks exactly like her. In an effort to understand, she recruits Draco Malfoy, but the truth goes deeper than either of them could have realised.
Operation Get Draco Laid by in_dreams. M, 33k. The war is over, and Draco Malfoy is tired of being the perfect, obedient pureblood heir. Now he wants to lose his virginity, stat. And since Draco is back at Hogwarts for his eighth year, there should be plenty of opportunities... right? Dramione.
Head Games by MissFantastic. E, 37k. Inspired by the cliché challenge, Draco Malfoy is made Head Boy and is horrified to find that Hermione Granger is Head Girl. Draco decides the only thing that would make the situation bearable is to seduce the little know-it-all. He comes up with a foolproof plan - but does he really know the Gryffindor Princesses as well as he thinks? At least Draco can control every detail of the seduction - or can he?
Rule number one by mismatchedsockz. E, 39k. Hermione knew about sex.
She wasn’t a clueless, naive girl. She knew the process and the purposes, to get pleasure or to make children. However, she had never experienced anything of that sort. Too busy with a war on her shoulders, she never got the time to even think about the intricate feelings of maturity.
Until one day, she found a Professor who was willing to teach her everything she didn’t know.
Tea and Necromancy by @saveourskinship. M, 40k. “I’m dead,” she said.
It seemed a simple thing. Her friends laughed.
But Draco watched her and only her. She blinked. Her friends carried on but she didn’t. Her lips didn’t twitch in response to the morbid, gallowed joke, her eyes didn’t crinkle in nightmare’d amusement.
He realised he’d transitioned from observant to staring and looked away. But it prickled at him.
Something wasn’t right with Granger.
Innocent Monsters by @itscometothis. T, 50k. Draco Malfoy thought he had reasonable expectations for his mandatory Eighth Year at Hogwarts, where he would be confined to the grounds as part of his probation. Isolation, hatred, and passing his NEWTs were really all he had in mind.
What he wasn't anticipating:
1) Having a small firstie latch onto him like a bloody koala
2) Said firstie adopting an erkling as if they didn’t feed on children.
To protect his little nuisance, he’ll have to seek help from uncomfortable places, including the Swottiest Witch of Her Age. Joy of all joys.
Kiss, With Tongue by @sportivetricks. E, 59k. Frustrated with the male propensity to 'shag and run,' the girls engage in a contest to see who can go the farthest by Valentine's Day without going all the way. But perhaps they should have chosen their partners more carefully…
Jealousy by @rainsrabble. M, 59k. "Oh come on Granger, don't be such a stick in the mud. Your precious Gryffindor ex isn't hesitating to string your heart out for everyone to see. He doesn't care that you are being humiliated. He doesn't care that everyone is spreading horrible rumors about you. All I'm suggesting is to give him a bit of his own back," he paused then, his voice going softer, suggestive. "I know you have it in you, I've seen you in action. Rita Skeeter, Umbridge, Me…you don't hesitate to serve it up when someone's got it coming. And he's got it coming Granger."
5 am, waking up by mysterious_intentions. T, 68k. He didn’t want this. Never did. Hermione Granger isn’t some stranger— she is his classmate, someone he spoke to regularly before, someone he saw every day, someone he wasn’t remotely friends with, but someone who wasn’t nothing either.
But now, faced with the opportunity to lord his superiority, he finds himself wondering what the fuss is all about. Pureblood and mudblood is just…blood. Blood is blood, and blood is red.
What You Call Sin by into_the_midst. T, 71k. The war is over, the trials completed, and the castle rebuilt. In hopes of a quiet, conflict-free year, Hermione, Ron, and Harry return to Hogwarts to finish their NEWTs. But at the welcome feast, a new plan for unity is unveiled, and all students are resorted. Despite the calls for forgiveness, resorting the students brings back old prejudices and sheds light on new.
Hermione can't imagine Ravenclaw Tower ever feeling like home, especially not when it means living with Draco Malfoy.
Atonement by @lunamionny. M, 108k. 'We are all broken. That's how the light gets in.'
When Hermione and Draco return to Hogwarts for their eighth year, they’re both broken and both changed in irrevocable, albeit different, ways. But when the school’s new mind healer implements an innovative new treatment, it ignites the possibility that, maybe, Hermione and Draco can help each other piece together the scattered fragments of themselves that the war has left behind.
Initially Yours by @hufflepuffmommy. M, 112k. Upon waking up on his 18th birthday, Draco Malfoy noticed three small letters on his wrist: HJG.
That same day, Hermione Granger also woke up with letters on hers: DLM.
"What does it mean?" she asked quietly.
"It means… we're soulmates."
And We All Fall Down by rumaan. M, 122k. The spring term at Hogwarts starts with a bang with the return of Draco Malfoy, back for his eighth year after a stint in Azkaban. But all is not right with Draco, and Head Girl Hermione Granger can't help but get involved.
The Fixer-Upper Club by @charlipetidei. M, 140k. Since the war, Hogwarts castle has been left in a state of disrepair, not unlike some of the students within its crumbling walls. When Hermione decides to return for an eighth year of studies, she finds herself setting out on a restorative journey that might just fix more than a few broken windows.
The one where Hermione and Draco rebuild the castle, themselves, and each other.
Breath Mints / Battle Scars by @onyx-and-elm. E, 148k. For a moment, she's almost giddy. Because Draco Malfoy's been ruined by this war and he's as out of place as she is and — yes, he has scars too. He's got an even bigger one. She wonders whether one day they'll compare sizes.
Sugar and Spice by @inlovewithforever. E, 156k. (Hermione/Draco/Theo) Contrary to what she claimed, it wasn’t grass and new parchment and spearmint toothpaste she smelled.
A mind-boggling amalgamation of confusion followed by a peripheral realization, and then instantaneous fear made her flush so severely that the room went fuzzy around the edges of her vision as she choked out the lie.
It was old parchment housed in the restricted section, tart green apples, and something spicy—not cinnamon, cloves?—that lingered inside her nostrils. She was woozy, her lids drooping heavily, even as a small part of her brain screamed at how wrong this was. A larger, louder part of her shoved the shame down in favor of baser instincts. Those instincts dampened and dissipated and the shame crowded in the further removed she was from the delicate, unmistakable scent wafting from the cauldron.
Falling Dark by ScullyMurphy. E, 250k. Sequel to Bending Light. It's a year since Hermione Granger and Draco Malfoy parted in Italy with promises of love and fidelity. The Battle of Hogwarts is over and Voldemort is dead. And although the price paid was high, Hermione is ready to start the rest of her life, and her eighth year studies, with Draco by her side. No hiding and no shame.
But when Draco finally arrives at Hogwarts, it's obvious that things are very wrong. Why is he acting so strangely? And what happened during the long months he lived as a double agent, passing secrets from the Death Eaters to the Order?
No one is talking, but Hermione will get to the truth, even if it means breaking her own heart in the process.
If Bending Light was the warm, lazy Italian summer, this is the dark, brooding Scottish winter. Dress warmly.
Pop on over to Part One or Two (and feel free to check the Master List of Recommendations if you’re seeing this as a reblog, because I’ll keep my lists updated there as I have new recs to add).
