Title: consequences

Summary: The Illuminati on Earth-838 don't kill Stephen Strange. They maroon him on Titan, alone and stripped of his magic.

Stephen doesn't believe this is punishment enough for his crimes.

Titles are hard. Writing is also hard, but I think an ambiguous, half-assed ending is better than no ending, honestly.

Stephen hissed as the grainy sand of Titan dug into his knees. His Cloak was curled in his arms like a cat, rubbing at his blood-stained face, caressing his shaking, black-stained hands. Thanos’ corpse, impaled by his own sword, lay nearby. The illuminati discussed Stephen’s fate in the shadow of an abandoned ship.

Stephen breathed in the heavy air, savoring what was no doubt his last moments. Dreamwalking, no matter the intention, was an offense punishable by death. He knew that, and he still did it. He didn’t regret it. Stephen let out a chuckle as he stroked the Cloak, brilliant blue against the rust-red dirt. He couldn’t regret it – he had saved the world after all. At the cost of his sanity, his life , maybe. But the world was better, the threat had been eliminated and Stephen was going to die.

Reed led the rest of the Illuminati forwards. They stopped in front of him, standing in a line. Their faces grim, their eyes sad. Stephen didn’t look up. The Cloak curled around his fingers. “You’ve chosen my fate then?”

“Dreamwalking is an offense punishable by death.” Reed said after a moment of silence.

“I know.” Stephen drawled.

Reed sighed. “Death is not punishment enough for your crimes, Stephen.”

“I know that too.” Stephen knew very well. He had counted on it, even. But he did what he had to do and now he would pay the price.

There was a heavy pause. Reed seemed to mentally prepare himself, blinking rapidly. “The Illuminati have decided your punishment.” Another heavy, pregnant pause. “You will be stripped of your magic and stranded. Your vitals will be monitored. We will return to collect you body. Despite your crimes, you will die a hero. Earth will honor your death when it comes and before then, mourn your capture at the hands of the Children of Thanos.”

Stephen took a deep breath. He let his hands move from his lap and dig into the soft soil at his sides. Slowly starving to death, if a lack of water, complete isolation, and heat stroke didn’t kill him first? He’d been through worse. This wasn’t punishment; this was mercy.

“Very well.”

Reed nodded, sharply, looking somewhere just above Stephen’s shoulder. “Good.”

“Yes.”

Some more uncomfortable silence, broken only by estranged cries as Charles extracted Stephen’s magic. Without his magic, Stephen’s hands were shaking out of control, limp and useless.

The Illuminati left without a word soon after, dragging Stephen’s Cloak with them. Stephen let them go, watched them without feeling. It was a fate worse than death, yes, but Stephen knew he deserved much worse. At least he had no one but the ghosts of the past to witness his demise.

I legit don't know how to feel about this

A sad funny(?) and depressing(?) fact is that it was said (the writer I think?) in the Doctor Strange Marvel Assembled (Behind the scenes/Making Of) that 838 Christine didn't get married because the Strange from that reality was a lot more emotionally unstable and isolated/closed therefore he ignored Christine a freaking lot- leaving it in subtext that she didn't lose her interest for him because of that- and if we pay attention to the movie, maybe that point of view wasn't exclusive to the writer, since all the text has to be approved by the production team members above him- in fact, in the movie, Christine seems to have more interest in Stephen than Christine prime (from our Stephen's reality) does, like she was comparing the X-rays of Stephens' hands- and Stephen couldn't ask about anything and she would be SUPER defensive instead of just ignoring him like prime Christine does.

Does that mean prime Stephen actually sending her emails and telling her he loved her made Christine think he was pathetic and ended up overcoming him a lot easier? I mean, 838 Stephen ignoring the shit out of Christine made her...not get married, in the sense, not move on, and still, in subtext, still be so interested in him despite not saying it?? Is Earth 838 really that f- up??
