Episode Description
In the last weeks of Opening Night, Hadley Fraser kindly sat down with us to talk about his experience with the show and to look back on some of his recent credits too. After graduating from the Royal Academy of Music, Hadley has proven himself to be one of the most versatile actors on the West End stage, taking on principal roles in both musicals and classic plays. Hadley has also worked extensively in regional theatre, championing venues like Chichester Festival Theatre, Sheffield Crucible and Manchester's Royal Exchange. During Josie Rourke's tenure at the Donmar Warehouse, he also worked closely with the Donmar team on a number of shows including Coriolanus, Saint Joan and City of Angels. The Donmar was also where he met his now-wife: Olivier nominee Rosalie Craig with whom they share a daughter. The couple still occasionally work together, most recently on a livestream of Stuart Matthew Price's Before After and we look forward to seeing the pair on stage again soon.
In this new interview, Hadley Fraser opens up about his experience as a performer and as a creative. He talks to us about his current experience of putting together Opening Night with Ivo Van Hove and discusses the importance of taking risks, even when in a difficult financial climate. He admits he was aware the show would split opinion but remained intrigued by the avant-garde director's vision of the show and shares his admiration for Wessex Grove Productions, Rufus Wainwright and Ivo Van Hove. As he prepares to take his final bows next month, he remains grateful for the time spent with this company as he looks ahead to life after Opening Night.
Opening Night runs at Gielgud Theatre until 18th May with tickets available NOW.https://open.spotify.com/episode/5EH6t9c1BwWoHdlScSsttEhttps://open.spotify.com/episode/5EH6t9c1BwWoHdlScSsttE

Prince Hal/King Henry V from the BBC miniseries The Hollow Crown; Coriolanus from the Donmar Warehouse production; and Hamlet from Kenneth Branagh's production at the Jerwood Vanbrugh Theatre.
I had hoped to have these back by St. Crispin's Day (October 25th), but Halloween always preoccupies me. 🎃

top five *and* bottom five historical eras
top five:
01. filthy victorians; they made me what i'm made of!
is it cheating to count the gilded age separately, or is it cheating to list them as the same? i genuinely cannot decide. either way, here it is, awkwardly sandwiched with the victorians, as always.
02. ancient israel, especially the period leading right up to and spanning the jewish-roman wars. three-hour long historical epic about simon bar kokhba when.
03. american revolution. i can't help it; my father celebrated the fourth of july bigger than christmas. i've come to accept that there is a part of me that will always have a little starry-eyed wonder for The American Experiment.
04. the mughal era. flashy the white queen-style miniseries about the war of succession between aurangzeb and dara shikoh WHEN!
05. late 1950s/early 1960s u.s. but, like, the spicy youth culture edition as depicted in the documentaries rebel without a cause, the outsiders, and west side story.
honorable mentions: belle époque (i know. i know i have, like, three different versions of the long nineteenth century on this list. it will happen again); The Period Formerly Known As The Dark Ages; the weimar republic; the "wild west."
bottom five:
01. antebellum southern U.S. i cannot with the way people aestheticize this period and pretend that doing so is harmless, or worse, Their Culture, and i wish everyone who's ever had a plantation wedding a very die.
02. ancient rome. it's just never been terribly interesting to me. best i can do is sit through the donmar warehouse's coriolanus.
03. the regency. bridgerton is overrated, jane austen is overrated, i hate your clothes, and you all are the reason why the victorians felt the need to cover up table legs lest they promote impure thoughts*.
04. the 15th century, not for any particular personal dislike, and it's where my man R3 hails from, so the love is there, but i always feel like everything that happened in the 15th century is either way too late or way too recent for my comfort. i don't like how few years, relatively speaking, are between geoffrey chaucer and joan of arc, or between richard iii and henry viii. the hollow crown really fucked me up.
05. I SWEAR TO GOD IF THE ZOOMERS KEEP TRYING TO BRING BACK Y2K
*that is a joke and a myth. in fairness, the stories about regency women dampening their dresses so they clung better might be a myth, too. but still.

The 2011 movie version of Coriolanus is so under appreciated. The Donmar Warehouse one was great, and of course the way it presented Martius and Aufidius’ relationship was brilliant, but the movie does an incredible job of portraying the complexity of Coriolanus’ character and it’s definitely my favourite of the two for that reason. Also I am in love with the way it portrayed Virgilia. Why is the Coriolanus fandom ignoring this

Hi, i'm curious about how do you got into shakespeare and co. ? Can you recomment something to read for a starter? Furthermore i wish you have a nice day 😊
thanks for waiting for me to answer. I've been super busy. and this ask made me SO happy. So I actually read some Shakespeare in high school and while I found them interesting, Macbeth was the only one that strongly resonated with me (and still one of my favorites). Later I got to see it on stage and also saw a production of Julius Caesar on stage. And omg it was so much more vibrant. I got back into Shakespeare recently after watching the Donmar Warehouse production of Coriolanus (streaming free here https://www.schooltube.com/media/Coriolanus+%7C+Donmar+Warehouse+%7C+National+Theatre+at+Home/1_i4iwz5ix) and then basically binging a whole bunch of other plays and various adaptations of those plays. I highly highly recommend that production btw.
I personally think the plays are more fun to watch than to read. I mean, reading them is basically like reading the script for a movie. Shakespeare never meant anyone to read his plays. They are much more engaging and also easier to understand when you see them performed. (That said of course you can get a lot out of reading them too).
I've found that understanding Shakespearean English is hard at first but your ear adjusts. Just like listening to a foreign language gets easier. And while the language in Shakespeare is challenging, if you already speak English then learning to understand it is WAYYYY easier than learning a new language. So instead of thinking of it like hard English think of it as a really easy foreign language. Sure there are some differences but you can pick it up relatively fast. Versus the years it would take to learn a new language well.
What plays you will like most really vary from person to person. I think the easiest stories to understand are the ones you can get engrossed in. I also think sometimes the comedies are harder to understand since sometimes the jokes reference things that you need to know a lot about the culture and history of the time they were written to get. (I mean. Think how specific to a certain context a lot of talk shows are).
The globe theater has a streaming service (https://www.shakespearesglobe.com/watch/) where you can watch a bunch of their plays online. I really love the henriad, which is a series of 4 plays that follow several generations of characters in the monarchy and it's kinda like game of thrones minus the dragons (I mean GoT was actually based on the same history so it's not surprising). The plays are Richard II, Henry IV pt 1, Henry IV pt 2 and Henry V. The Globe Theater productions (esp Henry IV pt 1 and Henry V) are amazing and their take on Prince Hal/Henry V is PERFECT. I also love their production of Macbeth. You always read a synopsis before watching so it makes more sense.
(You do have to pay for the streaming service but the price is pretty reasonable compared to the cost of a theater ticket. Esp given you get access to a whole bunch of performances. So it’s a good way to get a flavor of the experience of performances for a lot less cost. and of course it’s much more accessible since you can watch from anywhere. and you can pause it etc if you need to)
The Digital Theater streaming service has Royal Shakespeare Company plays (https://www.digitaltheatre.com). The RSC production of Hamlet with Paapa Essiedu is THE version of Hamlet for me. It's just. SO good. There's also a FABULOUS RSC production of Caesar on there that is super good and which I highly recommend.
And of course, any of these plays can be read instead if you want. You can usually find the texts for free online. Or at your local library.
(You do have to pay for the streaming service but the price is pretty reasonable compared to the cost of a theater ticket. Esp given you get access to a whole bunch of performances. And it goes to support the theater which is a good cause.)

Coriolanus and no knickers (Tom Hiddleston & x reader one shot)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
18+ blog: It is YOUR responsibility, as a reader, to think about the content that you consume at your own discretion.
A/N: I know this is way overdue...like we're hopefully far past all of the lockdowns etc...and literally a lot of people are over it now, but this was an idea that was in the works for ages. It was in the works even long before I announced the title of it, I was just avoiding it for a long time. Not that I'm saying I dislike this one, because I don't dislike it....it was all really down to getting my head fully around it. I have expressed about my difficult time during the lockdowns before, especially the first one, that one had to be the worst. As did many of us struggle. It was all overwhelming...anyway this it in its entirety after having the rough outline planned for so long, enjoy 😊 x
~
Summary: The world is under lock down and the production of the Disney+ series, Loki, has been put on hold. Tom and you are stuck in a hotel room in Atlanta with his dog Bobby, due to the Covid 19 pandemic. No one knows when life will be normal again or if it ever will be the same after all of this chaos. In the meantime though Tom is invited to join the Coriolanus watch along, a reunion of sorts. However during it you decide it's the best time to tease Tom by not wearing any knickers.
Warnings: fingering, suggestive themes, smut, mentions of Covid 19, mentions of lockdowns and unprotected sex
------------------------------
Josie Rourke began her Instagram livestream and announced the start of the watch along of Coriolanus, which she directed at the Donmar Warehouse and it ran from December 2013 - February 2014, and it was filmed by The National Theatre Live. Hence why she had the opportunity to organise a watch along with some of the cast members, now that it was possible due to The National Theatre streaming several plays onto YouTube, as well as raising money during these difficult times.
After Josie spoke with Erin Murphy the stage manager first, she then tried more than once to invite Tom to join her. However he did not respond right away, as he was busy greeting you and Bobby at the door, as you'd just gotten in after taking him for a walk. Since you both decided that it was for the best while Tom was setting everything up, and Bobby would more than likely just settle down and chill out whilst Tom would be talking to Josie. Of course Tom gave Bobby a long scratch behind his ears and he chuckled at Bobby's appreciation in return. Then he gave you a few pecks on your lips and one of his famous warm hugs, even though you were only gone for just little over an hour, he'd missed you nonetheless. You missed him too. Eventually you had to untangle yourselves as you overheard Josie's voice in the background apologising to everyone for the technical difficulties. Due to Josie thinking that the connection itself was being slow and not the fact that Tom wasn't there to answer her request to join.
As Tom settled down to double check, or even triple check over everything was good to go, you'd taken Bobby's lead off and gave him a small treat as you knelt down to him. Then you told him that he was a good boy on his walk with your baby voice, which you always used with the adorable fluff ball. Also hearing that voice always made Tom smile. In the end Tom had to request to join Josie instead after missing her request yet again, and after her quick email to see if he was there or not. You mouthed 'I love you' as he looked up at you with a smile before you went into the bathroom. Although his request was accepted before he could mouth an 'I love you' back and the bathroom door had closed with a soft click behind you.
"Ah-ha!" Josie celebrated with a smile and a little clap of her hands, as Tom finally popped up onto the screen.
He chuckled and then said, "hey."
"That was an aching pause of me being technically incompetent, for which I apologise to everyone." She said as Tom nervously chuckled. He wanted to explain, to tell her the truth, but the truth was no one knew about you. Well except for his family, who had the pleasure of meeting you over a video call a few weeks ago. Your family got to meet him too, during  a separate video call a few days later. Other than your families you both had kept your relationship very quiet.
Josie then caught up with Tom a bit after having successfully gotten everything to work finally. She even expressed how excited she is to watch Coriolanus after all this time, but as she rambled on Tom's personal phone alerted him with a new text message. He instantly frowned his eyebrows at it, as he could have sworn he'd turned silent mode on, clearly he hadn't though. So he quickly turned it on and ignored the message before he gave Josie his full attention again. Although the lighting around him was natural, due to what remained from the mostly cloud covered sunshine, it still wasn't the best look whilst on camera. Also his work phone's positioning was amateur at best, but he could at least still be seen.
Tom and Josie continued to talk to fill in the time before Coriolanus began streaming. She even joked about people muting them if those watching at home wanted to focus on the play rather than them talking. On the other hand, who would do that anyway? On top of that they both couldn't express enough thanks at the amount of generosity that everyone was showing by donating. Theatre being very close to both of their hearts, but also knowing how much theatre is loved, people wanting to keep theatre alive, and how much people miss it whilst in lockdown. Followed by Josie praising Tom's performance and making him blush in the process. Then the conversation dove into more about the play itself and Tom explaining how extraordinary it is.
A couple more minutes later as Tom was trying to elaborate on what he was saying, in the corner of his eye he caught his personal phone light up, another new text message had come through. Again he ignored it and carried on talking with Josie about the play, as well as him saying "William Shakespeare the greatest playwright ever, arguably."
Josie had agreed with him of course and then they moved onto how actors approach Shakespeare's works, then she highlighted the athleticism of the character Coriolanus, the athleticism Tom and everyone had put into their performance. Prior to Tom briefly explaining his as she called it 'adventure' with the character. However, both times the text messages came up he never noticed that they were from you. He knew you'd been in the bathroom for a bit, but he thought it was mostly to stay out of the way, so you wouldn't get caught on camera.
You emerge from the bathroom though just as Tom says,"I apologise unreservedly," before he begins to give his version of the program notes, and the start of introducing the play properly.
Actually you emerged out in a baggy t shirt which barely covered your thighs, but you tiptoed around the room, before you busied yourself by quietly reading a book on the other side of the hotel room. In fact it was one of Tom's, he had recommended it to you to read a while ago, and the lockdown was sadly the perfect time for you to read it. Although your presence was a little distracting for Tom as you came out the bathroom, luckily though Bobby ended up being the bigger distraction, due to him jumping up onto the bed where Tom has been perching on his side the entire time. Regardless of how little Bobby could be seen on camera Josie was very excited to see him. Albeit the sound of squeaking from Bobby's chew toy brought a smile to all of your faces, which is just the particular dog behaviour, along with their love for all things that squeak. But Tom did try to get Bobby not to squeak his toy so loudly, just so he could be heard, due to only having the small mic on his phone. Even as he carried on with what he was saying, and the play only a mere couple of minutes before starting, it was clear that Bobby wasn't quite as worn out from his walk as both yourself and Tom had hoped.
As the livestream of Coriolanus began both Tom and Josie's first reactions caused you to look up from your book. You found it rather amusing, but you remained quiet. After all this was the first real time in a while that Tom was doing anything work related. Obviously he'd been keeping in touch with everyone who's working on the new Disney+ series, Loki, while making sure to get all the updates about when it's safe to go back to filming. Also, he'd been doing whatever he could do to keep busy whilst the pair of you were stuck in the hotel room in Atlanta. Whether it was taking long walks with Bobby, making love to you, talking with you or with family and friends, or even doing a little side projects which mostly was with Unicef. It really was just the matter of staying positive while the world was practically shut down.
Deep down though he was thankful to have you and Bobby with him, because he knew he couldn't get through the lockdown without either of you. Otherwise he knew he'd be too worried, more so than the worry he was already feeling for his family and friends back home. You have also expressed the same feelings to him too. The relationship between you both was strengthening everyday whilst being trapped in the hotel room, which this time together proved to be the ultimate test. A test about the possibility of buying a place together after all this was over, as you'd talked about it with him frequently, as the weeks turned into months while staying in the hotel. In truth you were both very happy and you had a mini six months anniversary during all of this within the confinements of the hotel room. Tom had sneaked in some champagne from a little corner store that he bought specially for the occasion. He bought a bouquet of your favourite flowers too. In return you'd gotten him a box of his favourite chocolates and showed him all of your appreciation. What else could you both do anyways given the circumstances?
------------------------------
Some time later you'd put your book down and began scrolling through stuff on your phone. By this time too, Bobby had settled down and had fallen asleep on your side of the bed. Nevertheless you were becoming restless as the seconds continued to tick by. So much so that the excitement from the thought of the text or rather photo you'd taken in the bathroom, the very same one you sent Tom earlier was eating away at you. In fact you had decided to sit up on the large unit that had the tv and a few other things on, but there was still more than enough space for you to fit on. As you sat there you watched Tom as he fiddled with his blue shirt, or combed his fingers through his messy dyed long black locks, or rubbed/scratched at his neck or shoulder as he spoke. You could also see his thought process within his facial expressions and the expressiveness in his hand gestures. Basically, no matter what he did you always found it sexy and he was charming even without really trying. His intelligence and sense of humour added to every other detail you loved about him, even the little habits that others might find annoying.
Albeit, Tom had noticed you'd moved a little while later when his eyes had glanced over to you, which he did from time to time to check up on you, in between talking or listening to Josie. You simply smiled at him when he was looking to show him you were fine. Besides when he later looked over at you again, you'd pulled your left knee up to your chest and had both of your hands clasped together on top of it, causing your baggy t shirt to rise up. Your nether regions were fully exposed to him as you lent against the wall. The sight of you made Tom pause mid sentence, his mouth agape, his eyes soaking it all in. Josie and everyone watching at home were sitting there looking very confused.
"Are you alright Tom?" Came Josie's concerned voice from his phone and instantly snapped him out of his daze.
"Er...ye-yep...sorry-sorry." Tom rambled on, as his eyes were back on his phone's screen. "I apologise for that..." he scratched the back of his neck as he spoke sheepishly.
"Are you sure you're alright Tom?" Josie repeated, as she readjusted her air-pod in her ear.
"Yes-yes, quite alright, thank you. Just watching what Bobby was doing." He lied. Thankfully no one could see Bobby now, because where he'd fallen asleep on your side of the bed was out of shot. "He's fine by the way, just causing some mischief." He then rushed to add.
Tom and Josie soon got back on track with what they were talking about. Unfortunately for Tom  you became even more distracting as the minutes went by. Especially as you decided to start pleasuring yourself, as you watched his hands move around more often as he spoke, because you couldn't resist the tempting thoughts of his hands on you. After all his hands were so soft, comforting whenever you needed to have a comforting touch, and those damn long fingers of his felt amazing inside of you. Without a doubt he knew what you were trying to do, and evidently his resistance was being challenged in the process. He was glad though that no one could see exactly how much enjoyment he was getting out of seeing you pleasure yourself. The height of his phone's positioning also thankfully didn't give anything away either, because it would have been extremely embarrassing if they could see the very obvious bulge in his trousers.
As you built up your pace you scooted further down the wall and your bum was practically hanging off the edge of the unit. Then just as Tom looked back over at you while Josie was talking, you thrusted your fingers in and out of yourself a lot faster, as your thumb simulated your clit. You had to bite down on your lower lip hard as you fingered yourself to and achieved your climax. If it weren't for the livestream you would have let all of your sounds out for him to hear. For now though you removed your fingers once your orgasm subsided and you repositioned yourself so Tom had a full view of your sodden pussy.
Mercifully Josie put Tom's train of thoughts on hold as she let him have a break for a while as she spoke to Jacqueline Boatswain. This being his second break. Yet as soon as she closed off Tom from her screen and literally no one could see him anymore he hastily advanced on you. Without disturbing his set up or Bobby either, thankfully.
"You're being very naughty." Tom mumbled through his kisses on your lips.
"Mmmm...I just love it when you talk shop." You whispered once his lips were only hovering over yours and you wrapped one arm around his neck.
He chuckled darkly then said gruffly, "I talk shop all the time."
"I know..." you whispered again, before you shoved your fingers that were still wet into his mouth. He moaned around them and sucked them clean.
"You'll get me into trouble though if you keep this up." He replied once he pulled your now clean fingers out of his mouth. "I mean just feel how much I want you right now." He adds, as he moves your hand further away from his mouth, and then down to his crotch.
"Precisely, Big guy." You say, as you began to rub your fingers against his crotch.
"You'll be the death of me one day, Y/N..." His breath hitched as he felt you rub him harder through his trousers.
It was your turn to chuckle this time. "I guess I just have that effect on you, huh?" Tom groaned in agreement, but he removed your hand shortly thereafter, as he heard Josie finished talking with Jacqueline.
That was his cue to get head back over, sadly. Once Tom had gone live once more you had to keep yourself busy, with whatever you could find to do in the meantime, because deep down you didn't want to get him into trouble in front of all those watching. Besides you knew how much he valued his privacy and neither of you were ready for the world to know about your relationship, at least not yet anyway. Plus you had to admit to yourself that you felt good after teasing Tom for a bit to pass the time.
------------------------------
Much later as things with the livestream watch along was winding down you knew that it was going to be time to eat soon. So you stretched the full length of your body out as you lay on the sofa, only to have Bobby jump up immediately after you relaxed your body down again. He'd been rather quiet the rest of the livestream, now though his energy was up, meaning he wanted to play. However Tom had other ideas.
The next thing you knew Tom had come over to lay on top of you on the sofa, and Bobby just plonked down on his bum staring at you both. The livestream was finally over.
"Hello, darling..." Tom said seductively then he nipped on your barely visible collarbone.
"Hiiii" you giggled.
"Thank you for the photo by the way." He replied when he leaned up on his elbows.
"You finally saw it then?" You grinned.
"Mm-hmm...I did indeed. I must say, Y/N, you made me blush." Both of you laughed before his lips came crashing down to yours. Bobby then howled at you. "Bobbers..." Tom warned firmly, yet not overly.
"Awh, he's only a baby..." You said in your baby voice and scratched Bobby under his chin.
"Although you were the one being naughty earlier..." Tom replied, as he pulled your hand away from Bobby and laced your fingers together. His words made you blush too.
"I couldn't help it." You shrugged.
"You owe me now though..." he said huskily, as he began to roll his hips against yours. "I was uncomfortable for a while, no thanks to you."
"Yeah, so? You have time to do whatever to me now." You replied then bit your lip with anticipation.
Your invitation to do whatever he wanted was taken full advantage of that’s for sure that night.
