When It Scares You :
Tumblr media
Do what scares you even if it's something that gives you so much anxiety, or you feel like you'll fail. Do it anyway because you never know if you're going to like something or if it will go well until you try. A lot of success is taking that first step and allowing yourself to just leap.
Even if you fall down, get up and try again. Anyone who's ever succeeded at something really big understands exactly where you are and will not judge you for your first steps. This is because they were once you having to take those same exact steps.
Your beginning does not have the determiner end.

DO IT
In this prompt, it was to walk around and stop to smile at a stranger. My group and I initially chose this prompt because it sounded like a fun idea. Doing this prompt was a fun experience because smiling at a stranger is a way of showing kindness, and the stranger's reaction was hilarious because they were perplexed as to why a group of people just stood there and smiled at them while recording them. This prompt was supposed to create a positive experience for the stranger, but it ended up just being a funny and awkward situation for them.

DO IT
The task we chose involved all of us writing our signatures in a piece of paper.
Tumblr media
We decided that each would take a piece of paper and a pen and try to write their signature as many times as we could. Some decided to stick to the same signature while others experimented with it. Signatures are something we think little about in our daily lives, but they are supposed to be a representation of the person. Everyone used to practice their signatures ad nauseam, so what if you are forced to repeat it over and over? It boils down to self expression and breaking expectations.

Make a wish!
For the do-it challenge, my group chose a challenge from Yoko Ono, a Japanese multimedia artist born February 13, 1933. The instructions went as follows;
Make a wish. Write it down on a piece of paper. Fold it and tie it around a branch of a Wish Tree. Ask your friends to do the same. Keep wishing Until the branches are covered with wishes.
After Collecting a stick outside we found a quiet area to chat and write our wishes. we then went around tying our wishes to create a wishing tree.
To me, this tree represents the subjectiveness of value. My fellow artists and I grew attached to this Charlie Brown tree, it meant something to us, and we had memories tied to it. In contrast to the artist's feelings and value of the piece, to the viewer, it's just a stick with paper tied to it. I also love how this piece can show that some time has passed due to the "leaves" on the floor. the fallen leaves represent dreams that might have come true, changed, or just didn't come true.

Do it!
Our prompt made by Louise Bourgeois was “when walking, stop and smile at a stranger” so our first though was that all of us in the group were strangers. From there we thought about walking up to a stop sign and smiling at each other. In a way we always ignore or don’t think about how in every day life a simple smile to someone can make someone’s day and at the same time it is a way to open up doors, get to know people and make connections. In our case, we looked at the exercise in a very simple light, however, in the end we went walking together around campus getting to know each other and without realizing that simple smile brought us to a more complex experience.

For this project I did Yoko Ono’s Wish Piece. This project required me to make a wish, on a piece of paper, fold and tie it to the wish tree. Then get my friends to do the same. My intent when doing the piece was to do a magic ritual to use simple materials to transmute and give the tree mystic power. The tree and the desires are mystically manifest in the world with ritual objects. It was important for my group to keep the wishes hidden, as we had a superstition that if we shared our wishes they wouldn't come true.

DO IT Assignment Prompt Statement Of Intent
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For my assignment, our group chose the “Smile at a stranger” prompt. At first, we planned the ways in which we would go outside and smile at anyone we saw walk by us, but after further consideration of the assignment and talking it over, we planned something different where we would instead create a system where strangers come to us in a line and we smile at them. I believed that this would be an interesting response to the prompt that we chose as it would change an intended positive reaction from the stranger from a possibility to an expectation.

Do It IceBreaker.
With the instructions of going to this website, picking an artist's work to imitate, and then performing it out in the world, my group and I decided to follow Erwin Wurm's "Morning Walk" sculpture instructions. The directions were pretty self-explanatory, with pictures demonstrating the sculpture accompanying the written tutorial. Although deemed "easy", it was definitely unusual and something I'd never done before. A morning walk to work or school is something that almost everyone can relate to; it might be uncomfortable to some, boring to others, or just an autopilot action that everyone commutes to. Commuting can be stressful and uncomfortable in multiple different situations; for instance, in the hot Miami heat, people might be self-conscious on their commute to school. The sculpture can also be interpreted as a satirical view of the morning commute to either school or work; normally everyone is seen doing the same exact thing, like walking to wherever they may be commuting. These actions aren't typically seen in society when people commute to school or work because it isn't the societal norm. If someone is seen doing these actions, it sparks questions from the people around them, asking, "What are they doing?".
